You can practice the 4 drills you’ll learn below anywhere. Just make sure you choose an open, safe, and clutter free space.

With each drill, always triple check and re-check that your mag is empty and your pistol is unloaded. And remember, when seconds count and you’re carrying concealed, the time you’ve spent engraining these drills into your subconscious will pay off when you’re able to successfully protect yourself and your family.

Pick a single point on the wall as an “aim point.” You’ll focus on

this location as your target.

After you’ve picked you aim point, bring your pistol to a low

ready position using a two-handed grip. Bring your pistol to the target. Once you have your sight picture aligned, practice smoothly

pressing the trigger while maintaining your aim point focus.

You’ll hear the snap as your dry shot slams the hammer forward. At this point, your practice sight alignment is not over.

Continue holding the trigger down and use your nondominant hand to rack the slide while maintaining your position. Re-align your sight picture and repeat for 3-5 minutes.

If you’re using a 1911-style pistol for concealed carry and practicing this drill, you’ll want to be sure that you maintain an appropriate trigger pressure—leaning toward less pressure with a mid-tip pull. With a double action pistol (S&W revolver) you can practice a heavier pull, using more of your trigger finger.

During this drill, you’ll practice your concealed carry draw stroke. Again, you’ll start by verifying (multiple times) that your pistol is

empty. And you’ll start with a spot on the wall to use as a target. At this point, you’ll follow the same steps as the first drill, only

this time, drawing from your holster.

Remember your follow up shot and maintain your sight picture.

During this exercise (as with on-the-range shooting) you should

have two clearly distinct sight pictures during the drill. Practice quickly coming back to your initial sight picture after racking with your non-dominant hand.

After your first shot, keep your finger

holding the trigger back and realign your sights on target. Take your finger off the trigger, holster

your pistol, and repeat.

Practice moving in both directions.

If your concealed carry setup includes space for extra magazines,

you should practice emergency reloads.

Start with an empty pistol with the slide locked back. The goal during this emergency reload drill is to always keep

your eyes on target, so again, choose a target and bring your empty, slide locked back pistol into a firing position with two hands.

With your aiming point in sight and your pistol up, press the

mag release button.

Let the empty magazine fall.

As the empty mag falls, reach for your spare magazine

and bring it to the mag well. Rack the slide.

Return your pistol to target. Your Right to Carry Concealed is a Serious

Responsibility. Practice these Dry Drills As Often as You Can! Many ranges do not allow you to draw from a holster,

practice emergency reloads, or shoot on the move.

Staying safe and in your lane protects your range from accidents and the insurance company, but it won’t protect your life when it’s on the line and you’re carrying concealed. Dry practice is one of the best techniques you can use to always be ready. And the best part is, you can do it at home— any time you have free time!
