info@conceptenergy.org Addressing the Future of Carbon Management The UK Government Commitment By the Climate Change Act of 2008 the UK government committed Britain to a 34% reduction in carbon output by the year 2020. Even with a change of government, subsequent policy initiatives show an intention to continue the drive this goal. A twofold strategy is being applied to ensure commercial, industrial and the public sector organisations assist in meeting the target – incentives in the form of grants and loans and compulsion in the form of increasingly comprehensive regulation. Assisting clients meet all regulatory compliance obligations is a key element of Concept Energy’s services.
A Clearly Emerging Picture Irrespective of supply or pricing issues the energy efficiency future is now in clearly defined form, with demand for rigorous carbon control and greater emphasis on renewables - overwhelmingly driven by environmental factors. If organisations are to maintain both their profitability and their reputation for social responsibility, a clear and effective carbon management policy is vital. Concept Energy’s consultancy services recognise the importance of strategic planning and the long-term control of carbon output rather than on unsustainable short term initiatives.
The Corporate Imperative The Climate Change Act specifically targets the non-domestic sector for a reduction of 1.2 million tonnes of CO2 per annum by 2020. If larger organisations are to avoid the balance sheet impact of poor performance it is now essential that they implement and maintain a fully integrated carbon control programme. Alongside the environmental benefit there remains the financial gain of large-scale energy savings, with its effect flowing direct to the bottom line. A responsible and effective strategy will maximise that financial gain, avoid regulatory penalties and minimise compliance costs. Using such multi-disciplinary skills as those offered by Concept Energy Solutions will allow forward-looking management to create opportunities for savings – carbon and financial – and to raise their organisation’s public profile.
www.conceptenergy.org Informed Carbon Management Technical Excellence From preliminary energy surveys to comprehensive, detailed site or portfolio studies; our engineers have a very sound technical background – qualifications and experience – which means we can provide the best advice in any application. Concept’s technical capabilities and vision mean that we go a great deal further than simply identifying the more straightforward opportunities to reduce energy. Detailed analysis and feasibility studies carried out within a cost-efficient programme are typical assignments for us, enabling us to develop far-reaching carbon reduction project plans with our clients.
Data Management The ability to collect, analyse and interpret data, to understand fully a building or a process from an energy perspective. Information is the key to effective energy management. Concept has a team of energy analysts and data specialists to support our engineers in accessing and presenting meaningful data. We provide a range of bureau services, giving our clients clear, insightful management information and reporting in forms that are best suited to their requirements.
Project Implementation A level of technical advice and involvement that is matched to the client’s needs. Concept’s team can provide support to our clients’ staff or take on a full implementation role, using our own network of quality-assured contractors where applicable. The implementation process would typically include such components as drafting project specifications, overseeing tendering exercises, devising sub metering strategies, and project management throughout. We have extensive experience of project management and implementation – from PV arrays and heat pumps through to replacement lighting schemes, voltage optimisation and BMS upgrades. Post implementation, we are fully equipped to provide staff training and awareness and of course on-going monitoring and targeting, using recognised validation procedures…
Continuing Support From real-time performance monitoring and targeting , through to on-going energy market intelligence, regulatory compliance advice. Most in demand from Concept’s Energy Bureau is the remote monitoring and analysis of energy consumption and plant operation and control, ensuring that savings, once achieved, are maintained in the long term. We have IPMVP-certified staff who will monitor performance and can provide in-depth assessments of the true levels of savings achieved. Concept makes a real contribution to achieving and maintaining savings in energy consumption and cost over time. We keep clients advised of changes – in the energy market, or in regulation – and any impact that this might have upon them.
A User-Friendly Energy Management Support System Some time ago we, as carbon management practitioners, recognised that existing energy management software packages did not provide users with all the facilities necessary to manage – proactively – their energy usage. This, together with the objective of including building services (plant) status monitoring as an optional facility, led to the development of ASPECT, a complete energy management support system. This entirely scale-able service enables clients to take control of their energy usage, to plan more effectively for the future in terms of life cycle and budget implications, and to react immediately to any changes in performance. ASPECT is not confined solely to electricity monitoring – its core function is also to collect and display real-time gas and water consumption, as well as renewables generation, to give a full picture of status.
Real-time Energy Monitoring - A “Call to Action” At the core of ASPECT is the real-time monitoring of energy consumption and other plant – either building services or process equipment (ASPECT is equally effective in a commercial or industrial application). By developing target profiles and through an effective “exception” escalation protocol, energy consumption and plant operation can be maintained at the optimum level. Alarms warn the user when usage is exceeding expected levels, so that action can be taken to minimise wasted consumption. The alarm facility can be extended to include BMS alarms, or other monitoring devices. When further savings are achieved, the target profiles are refined to ensure that even additional savings are not simply temporary improvements and that they are sustained in the long term.
Easy Access ASPECT has been designed to make the monitoring of energy and water easy: being a web-based solution, the user can access and view the system from anywhere. It is intended to enable the user to check on status at-a-glance without the need to be on site. When an alarm is generated, the user can access ASPECT remotely via a secure log-in and can drill down through meters and sub meters to identify exactly where attention is needed. This means that the appropriate resources can be allocated immediately to resolve problems and greatly reduces unnecessary site visits and inspection time, as the data is readily available on-line.
Additional Data Gathering and Monitoring In order to analyse energy data within the context of building operation, or manufacturing process, ASPECT has been designed to collect and display other information, such as:
• • • • • •
Chiller efficiency Boiler operation Power supply quality Plant condition-based monitoring status Busbar temperatures Renewable energy generation output
In addition, where appropriate, the system can be used to provide BMS command and control, giving the user full access not only to status/performance, but with the ability to make adjustments when and where they are needed.
Reporting Tools ASPECT is equally suitable for large single-site applications as it is for multi-site organisations – industrial, commercial/retail or public sector. The system has a management reporting capability, with the facility to produce a range of reports to suit individual requirements. Client data from other sources can also be imported, for inclusion in the analysis and reporting. The system has a document library facility to retain not just reports generated, but other documentation relating to buildings, or to plant and equipment – drawings, reports and notes.
Easy to Use ASPECT has a fully adaptable dashboard, so that users can prioritise the specific areas they wish to see. We developed ASPECT to be a system that users at all levels would find easy to use – and a useful tool – to support them in monitoring and managing performance at plant, building or estate level.
