The University of New Mex ico volleyball team won their first two matches of the season 3-1 during the Lobo Invitational at The Pit. The first match was against California State Univer sity, Fullerton on Aug. 26 and the second one against Abilene Christian University on Aug. 27. While both matches began as nail-biters for the first two sets, UNM turned it around and took control of the court, winning three out of four sets played. UNM managed to beat both of their opponents in almost every single basic sta tistic except one: UNM was outpaced in digs against Abilene Christian 89-86. “It’s a little bit of validation for all the hard work put in here. It’s nice to see that the harder we work the more those results come on the court, and it’s been nice to see we’ve been grinding and practicing good and push ing on them hard,” head coach Jon Newman-Gonchar said. New additions to the team showed their support both on and off the court. Setter Anilee Sher joined UNM after transfer ring from Rider University. She had a team high of 43 assists against Cal State and 33 against Abilene Christian, leading in assists between both teams for bothInternationalmatches.

Lobo women’s soccer forward Jadyn Edwards is now entering her fifth and final year at the Univer sity of New Mexico, during which she hopes to carry on her excep tional performance from seasons prior and lead the team all the way to the Mountain West tournament as she looks ahead toward her professional prospects. Edwards started playing soccer recreationally around the age of five, learning from family friends who coached her and eventu ally working her way up to more premier teams and solidifying her love for the sport. Though she played goalkeeper and center back positions early on, Edwards eventu ally settled in as a forward in middle school and found her stride there. “I just like to score goals; I think that’s a fun part about soccer. And the athleticism of being up in that position, I think, suits me person ally,” Edwards said. And score goals she does: play ing a total of 1,692 minutes on the pitch last year, Edwards racked up a team-leading 11 goals and nine as sists and started in all 21 games of the season. This season is primed to be another great one for Edwards; in their recent game and first win of the season against California State University, Bakersfield, she made five shots and scored 3 goals. This upcoming year, she hopes to con tinue to lead the team in points as well as serve as a mentor to younger girls on the team. “Being someone the younger players can look up to and lead by

Greta is framed as a woman who knows and loves herself and uses society’s expectations of her to her own advantage — qualities that are empowering for much of the season. However, as her and Carson’s relationship develops, Greta soon becomes unlikeable.

While there is nothing inher ently wrong with an unlikeable or flawed character, the show attempts to keep the audience invested in the couple’s “happily ever after” beyond their care for Greta herself.

Sandler’s Everyman charm combined with NBA power for ward Hernangomez’s skill with the ball is what carries this mov ie. The rest of the performances range from impressive attempts by professional NBA players to the phoned-in efforts of typically betterThisactors.isn’tto speak for all of the NBA actors and cameos — there are certainly those whose sheer woodenness completely drew me out of the story, such as Dirk Nowitzki. However, for the most part, the players prove them selves to be talented and more than up to the task. Perhaps audiences more engaged in the professional basketball world will find more satisfaction in these moments — however, a cameo is still just a cameo and brings little value beyond recognition to a movie. Though the performances are important, equally as crucial in a sports drama is how the sport is conveyed. In Zak Mulligan’s cinematography, the basketball is fast, percussive and violent. There’s nothing inventive hap pening here, and there doesn’t need to be. It’s simple but engag ing and fantastic to watch, even for people not typically engaged by Still, basketball.though the editing high lights this aspect of the game, it also leaves a lot to be desired. A few scenes, particularly early in the movie, felt like they were treading water, ending right where they should’ve started. Though this could be a script ing issue, the abrupt editing makes these moments all the moreWhileapparent.themovie is primarily a drama, the script also attempts to deliver some laughs — un fortunately, this is an airball. There are only so many times an average-sized Adam Sandler can call himself fat before it becomes predictable and banal. However, part of what makes the script work is this pre dictability. When the training montage began, and many frank ly better movies were brought to mind, I still found myself swept up in the emotion of the scene. When Cruz hits his goal and Sugarman clicks the stopwatch, I was as elated as the characters themselves. This may be a simple moviegoing experience, but it doesn’t make the feelings it gen erates any less valuable. Altogether, this movie is an enjoyable watch for basketball fans and moviegoers alike. Come next year, I’m not sure if I’ll even remember watching this, but if you’re looking for a fun film to watch with friends and fam ily over Labor Day weekend, this movie is a slam dunk. REVIEW:

The sports movie is a surefire way to grab and hold an audi ence; take an underdog story and add unmatched athleticism, and you’ll wind up with some thing safe and satisfying that most audiences will have a great time with. Jeremiah Zagar’s 2022 feature “Hustle,” starring Adam Sandler and Juancho Hernango mez, is no exception to this rule, providing viewers with a heart felt and impressive film, if from the free-throw line. The story, like most sports dramas, is simple but works regardless. Sandler, playing fic tional 76ers talent scout Stanley Sugarman, trains an unknown but wildly talented amateur player Bo Cruz (Hernangomez) all the way to the NBA, with the pair growing closer in the pro cess. Add in some surface-level trauma for them to bond over, and you’ve got an easy lay-up made only that much more satis fying by Sandler’s performance.

The two primary love inter ests, Greta (D’Arcy Carden) and Carson, pose another issue with the show. Though a large part of the show focuses on the ro mantic relationship between the two, Greta’s treatment of Carson throughout much of the season makes it difficult to root for the couple’s success.

While Carson certainly has her own share of problematic behavior throughout the show, the season continues with Greta pulling Carson in and immedi ately pushing her away when Carson needs her most. In one instance, Greta even forces Car son to chaperone her date with a man as a way to make her jeal ous. Though the two share good chemistry in some episodes, in large part, their relationship seems toxic. As a whole, the first season of “A League of Their Own” was an interesting and enjoyable take on the original film and did an excellent job at providing the au dience with a basic understand ing of queer culture and history in the U.S. during World War II. Despite some of its shortcom ings, if you’re looking for a show that examines issues of queer identity, self-discovery, racism and sexism, this might be the one for you.

On Aug. 12, 2022, Amazon Prime Studios released their eight-episode adaptation of the 1992 film “A League of Their Own,” originally direct ed by Penny Marshall. Unlike the original film, the 2022 ad aptation, directed by Jamie Babbit, focuses heavily on queer ness and self-discovery. While the series does a good job of discussing gender, race and sexuality-based disparities, there is still a lot that could have been done better to make it a more enjoyable show. The show follows Carson (Abbi Jacobson), a housewife who flees her former life to play profes sional baseball, and Maxine (Chanté Adams), a black wom an from Rockford with similar aspirations. Despite being pos sibly the best pitcher any of the women have ever seen, Maxine is denied the opportunity to for mally try out for the team because of her race. One thing that seemed to be lacking in the first part of the season was fleshing out the sec ondary characters. We don’t get much backstory on any of the non-leads until about episode six, when we are randomly given information about characters that is intended to be mean ingful, but falls flat due to lack of build up — it’s just too little, tooAnlate.example of this occurs after a fight between Lupe (Roberta Colindrez) and Esti (Priscilla Delgado), the show’s two Latine characters. The audience is set up for a reconciliation that ad dresses Lupe’s frustration with Esti’s inability to speak English, as well as possibly a reflection on her own internalized racism. Instead, Lupe reveals that Esti reminds her of the daughter she was forced to give up, a detail that the audience is given no setup for prior to the interaction. It reads as an overly generated reason to create conflict between the two characters.

She is looking forward to fac ing off against Grand Canyon University on Sept. 4 as well as their game at the tail end of the season against San Diego State Univer sity — the “team to beat,” according to Edwards.“Probably to prepare (for the SDSU and GCU games), just mentally stay grounded and stay understanding of what we’re good at and what I’m good at and not try ing to do anything crazy, just being us and me,” Edwards said. Edwards scored the game-winning goal against San Diego State Uni versity during last year’s season. She said it was one of the great est moments in her time playing soccer; it was a “once in a lifetime feeling” to be able to accomplish it in a home game, surrounded by fans during an especially difficult COVID-19Edwardsseason.wasrecruited by head coach Heather Dyche at a tourna ment in California and “fell in love” with the program after a visit to the school, setting in stone her prosper ous career with the Lobos. “I think that Jadyn has always been someone that has the ability to win games and is a really com petitive player, and she’s definitely honed that as she’s gotten older here, but she’s always been some one that has kind of a special ability with the way that she plays, and that was obvious even way back then,” DycheOversaid.the years, Dyche said that Edwards has truly cemented a his torically significant place within the UNM women’s soccer legacy. “Other than just being a great player, she’s a pretty exceptional person … She’s a very humble per son who, for all her success, she doesn’t let it go to her head. She’s a hardworking player, and she’s also a great team captain. She does things for other people, she’s not someone who’s very self-centered, so the op portunity to work with Jadyn has been something that’s been really special,” Dyche said. As her final season with the Lobos comes to a close, Edwards plans to enter the National Women’s Soccer League draft. Whether she plays in the States or overseas, playing soc cer for as long as she possibly can remains chief for Edwards. Beyond that, she is also looking towards go ing back to school for her master’s degree in biology or a physician assistant program. “I think Jadyn has the ability to go as far as she wants to go, truthfully. She has the pieces to have a great pro career. I think playing in the Na tional Women’s Soccer League in our country is really difficult to do … I don’t know if Jadyn’s path will be direct to the NWSL or if she’s gonna play overseas for a couple years, but she’s definitely gonna have multiple options available to her,” DycheStill, said.Dyche’s only hope for Ed wards this season is for her to enjoy herself and continue to play the sport with characteristic pas sion. With the season primed for success, and her team-turnedfamily by her side, she is certain to achieve just that.

“I feel like our team is unlike many other teams in the country; we are all very close and we’re all best friends, and we all just like to have fun and have fun playing soc cer … The way we get along and the friendships I’ve made being on this soccer team specifically have been unreal, and I’m very grateful to have been a part of this team and made those friendships,” Edwards said. A week prior to the fall semester, members of the Uni versity of New Mexico Spirit Marching Band arrived on cam pus for band camp. Their practice kicked into high gear as the band began preparing their pregame and halftime shows for their upcoming season. The UNM Spirit Marching Band is one of UNM’s primary music ensembles, featuring about 110 members this sea son, according to drum major Damon Hess. The band is open to both UNM and Central New Mexico Community College stu dents and performs at all home football games throughout the season. In October, they will be hosting the 44th Zia Marching Band Fiesta for New Mexico high school“Bandbands.camp was bringing in all the veteran members and all the new members and getting ev eryone on the same page. We got our pregame show done mostly, and we’re starting to work on the halftime show,” Hess said. Beginning work on the half time show included planning the themes and preparing the music. This year’s themes have the band members excited, in cluding drum line section leader Marissa Carmenaty, who is par ticularly eager to show off the band’s rendition of “Toxic” by Britney Spears. “We have two (shows): women in pop, and then it is going to be a Latin-based show in the sec ond half of the semester. We have Britney Spears, Meghan Trainor and then whatever band sings ‘Hit Me With Your Best Shot,’” Carmenaty said. The marching band doesn’t only feature musicians. Other featured artists include the color guard and baton twirler Caro line Newell — the only baton twirler in a collegiate New Mex ico marching band, according to “I’mNewell.used to being the only twirler, so it’s not too bad. It’s very difficult, but it’s kind of fun because it’s something New Mexico does not have,” Newell said. “So when I go out to prowl, and I interact with the fans, they love seeing me out there because it’s just something different.”

“It’s definitely a little more welcoming and … It’s a little bit more fun. There’s a different en ergy on the field. I’m excited to go to rehearsal now,” Hess said. “I think (the band is) going in a good direction, and I think that the new directors bring a very important aspect that we haven’t had in a long time.” Students interested in joining the UNM Spirit Marching Band can apply online.

— members can wear masks if they choose, and if a member tests positive, they are told to quarantine per UNM instruc tions, according to Hess. “With COVID, we didn’t even have band, so we weren’t able to practice or anything. Now we’re able to practice all to gether, so our music sounds just a little nicer. People are able to practice on their own and in rooms instead of in their dorm,” Carmenaty said. The chance to return to nor mal, in-person practices is not the only change the band has seen this year. Two new directors, Geoffrey Harman and Brett Pen shorn, were welcomed into the band with open arms and have changed the overall atmosphere.

Mackenzie Schwartz / Daily Lobo / @Mackenzid5 Bobby Cole (#34), running back for the Lobos, runs down the line away from University of Nevada, Las Vegas team to make a touchdown Nov. 2021.

The University of New Mexico football team is looking to improve after an abysmal 2021 season, hav ing finished with a 3-9 record. If the Lobos hope to improve, step ping up their offense would be a step in the right direction; last season, the Lobos finished last in scoring in the Mountain West con ference by a margin of 94 points. They were also bottom three in first downs and in most passing and rushing stats. UNM will look to change that behind transfer quarterback Miles Kendrick, who played for the Uni versity of Kansas. Kendrick played in 17 games and started four for the Jayhawks. His Big 12 experience could be invaluable to the team. Kendrick had a completion per centage of 66.7% on 18 attempts last season and also displayed some ability to run the ball, rush ing for 73 yards on 13 attempts. The running back position will have to be played by committee after losing two of last year’s most valuable offensive players: Bobby Cole and Aaron Dumas. Expect to see a lot from Nathaniel Jones, who will be back in the lineup after missing all of last season. UNM retained wide receivers Luke Wysong and Andrew Erick son, who were first and fourth respectively in receiving yards for the team last season. They added transfer Geordon Porter, who played six games for the Arizona State Sun Devils last season. Porter has the tools to play in the starting lineup, but he had to take a back seat to Arizona’s run first offense. The scoreboard and team record does not reflect how well the de fense played last year. UNM gave up 4,357 yards last season, the sec ond fewest in the Mountain West. The Lobos also had the fourth best defense in the conference in yards per game, allowing an average of 363.1 yards. The defense also al lowed the third fewest opponent first downs last season. The Lobos are stacked at the safety position with all three starters returning for the season. Jerrick Reed II not only led the team with 89 tackles, but he was also 14th in the conference in to tal tackles. Tavian Combs was not far behind him with 81 tackles last season. Combs also tied with Ronald Wilson with each having two interceptions last season to leadTheUNM.defensive line features a lot of returning players, incoming freshmen and transfers that will have to make up for losing Joey No ble who, last season, was third on the team in tackles and fourteenth in the conference in sacks with 6.5. Ray Leutele and Justin Harris both return to the line, having had four sacks each last season. Danny Gonzales starts his third season as head coach. His record currently sits at 5-14, win ning two games in the shortened 2020 season and going 3-9 last year. Gonzales is facing a major year in his rebuild of the program while entering the third year of his five-year contract. Last season proved that, despite a good defense, you still need to score points to win football games. To get into the realm of being in vited to a bowl game, the Lobos have to make it work on offense. There is cause for optimism — last season’s young defense got a year under their belt and the offense is getting new talent and retaining important players — but they still have to prove it on the field.

UNM football shows potential ahead of 2022 season

Women Katrina Estrada / Daily Lobo / @Katrina_Est4 Jayme Hinshaw punches Cassie Robb in the ring at the Bare Knuckle Fighting Championship on Saturday, Aug. 27 at The Rio Rancho Events Center.

New Mexico held its first-ever Bare Knuckle Fighting Cham pionship on Aug. 27 at the Rio Rancho Events Center with the women proving to be a much more exciting watch than the men. New Mexico’s own John Dobson, Eric Dobson, Jayme Hinshaw and Will Santiago each took home a win throughout theThenight.event ran for about three and a half hours and ended with quick matches during the head lining fights. Christine Ferea took out Taylor Starling in a mere 47 seconds to retain her title as flyweight champion. John Dob son took out Ryan Benoit in a mereThe1:40.crowd was overwhelm ingly excited and into the action as fighters danced down the cat walk in bright, flashy outfits to music of every possible style, in cluding Celtic Irish music. The longest matches of the night were from Jeremy Smith v. Donald Sanchez and Brad Kelly v. Isaac Vallie-Flagg. Each fight lasted all five rounds, but ended with unanimous deci sions from the judges in favor of Smith and Kelly. This proved devastating for local fans as both Vallie-Flagg and Sanchez are from Albuquerque. In terms of local victories, though, John Dobson and Hin shaw both walked away with wins against Benoit and Cassie “The Joker” Robb, respectively, Katrina Estrada / Daily Lobo / @Katrina_Est4 Brad Kelly fights Isaac Vallie-Flagg in the ring. making a triumphant win for “Gotham” and Albuquerque alike. Santiago and Eric Dobson also defended the city’s name by defeating their opponents in the firstTheround.theatrics of the event were similarly intense with lights fly ing around the crowd, fog coating the floor as competitors entered the catwalk and men yelling into microphones in the center of the ring while shooting t-shirts into the crowd with the help of the Bare Knuckle Bombshells in between events. The female fighters signifi cantly outperformed the men in the ring with choreographed catwalks, shiny skirts flying and much more brutal fighting than the men. They were the most memorable part of the night despite making up only two of the 11 matches. The night end ing with a women’s match felt intentional, as to reward view ers for sitting through more than their fair share of the men’s underwhelming fights.
