Mother graduates alongside her daughter By Veronica Apodaca @veeapodaca Being a mother and a student are full-time jobs on their own, and Lori White has managed to do both at the same time during her years at the University of New Mexico. White, who is graduating with a Master’s degree in Health Administration from the School of Public Administration, is now able to share her graduation with her daughter, Alea White, as they both graduate from their respective programs this semester. “As a single parent for all of her life, I can remember having to bring her to campus in her stroller as I was finishing up my undergraduate degree in communications,” White said of her daughter, who is receiving bachelor’s degrees in both psychology and journalism and mass communications. In becoming a parent during her time at UNM, White found a new motivation to complete her education so that she could provide the best life possible for her daughter. As both of them have continued in their education, White says that she has emphasized the importance of

education, particularly at the college level, making sure that her daughter will have every opportunity to create a happy and successful life of her own. White is familiar with UNM, having found it to be a welcoming environment during both her graduate and undergraduate years. As she worked to complete her master’s degree over the past two years, she has been able to pass that same spirit along to her fellow students. With more than twenty years of
experience working at Presbyterian Healthcare Services, she has provided guidance about both school and career paths not only to her daughter, but also to younger students who have not had the benefit of going to college before. As well as giving guidance to others, White said she has found no shortage of support from the faculty at UNM. “I have been truly blessed during my graduate program to have some very awesome professors that have enriched not only my educational
endeavors but that have also had a profound effect on my personal life through the friendships we’ve developed,” said White of her bonds with the instructors in her program. Most importantly, she said going to school and graduating at the same time as her daughter has helped them to strengthen their already close bond. “She truly is my best friend, and although we didn’t plan to graduate at the same time, this is huge for both of us, we are beyond blessed and grateful,” White said. “Also, with both of us working full time and going to school full time we understand each other’s struggles of balancing school, work, and home life.” Now that she has completed her Master’s degree, White says that she is looking forward to taking a break before returning to work. “I hope to take a much needed vacation to a tropical destination,” she said. “It’s been a long two years.” With the experience that the graduate program has given her, White hopes to achieve personal and professional growth in her job as the program manager in Presbyterian Healthcare’s
Population Health department. She looks forward to further exploring the opportunities that her career at Presbyterian has to offer. As the end of the semester approaches, both Lori and Alea are busy with the end of classes and preparations for graduation day. Throughout all of this, and throughout the challenges that have come with focusing on school, careers and family, it is clear that their strong connection is the most important thing to them, as well as a source of motivation in their endeavors in the classroom and beyond. “The journey has not been an easy one, but well worth it,” White said. “I am truly proud of (Alea’s) accomplishments, and overjoyed that we will be able to share and celebrate this huge milestone together.” Veronica Apodaca is a culture writer for the Daily Lobo. Guinean student achieves dream by finishing college By Macey Rose @maceyrae9 One of the University of New Mexico’s fall 2018 graduates represents the non-traditional route to achieving a degree that many students take. Mamadou Sidibe moved to the United States when she was 20 years old from Guinea, a country in West Africa. After almost 10 years going after a bachelor’s degree, she has reached her goal of earning a bachelor's degree from a U.S. institution. After graduating high school in Guinea in 2009, Sidibe attended a local university for two and a half years. In May of 2011, Sidibe made her way over to the U.S. Sidibe said that's when her whole life changed. “I came to America only speaking French and had no one to pretty much show me the way,” Sidibe said. “But I knew what I wanted, and that was to obtain my degree no matter what.” First finding herself in New York City, Sidibe discovered the hardships of providing for herself in a
bustling metropolitan society. She said that she had never worked a day in her life for money or worked to feed herself — at 20-years-old it was all new to her. “I know in America people start working at a young age, but in my country that is not the case,” Sidibe said “All your parents want from you is to go to school.” Even though Sidibe has entered an entirely new lifestyle, she said she looked at her current situation with optimism and positivity. She had a goal in mind, and even though these drastic changes were in the midst of the life she was familiar with, Sidibe would keep looking forward to the degree she had dreamt of attaining for so long. “Working for the first time in my life was eye opening for me. I did not see it as a burden,” Sidibe said. “I just enjoyed being able to provide something for myself.” Along with the struggles that can come with entering an entirely different culture and lifestyle comes the possible language barrier with moving to a new country. Sidibe
came from a primarily Frenchspeaking country and spoke French along with four other African dialects native to Guinea. She said she had to learn English. “I was so shy and self conscious about my accent that (I) barely spoke in front of people,” Sidibe said. However, even though the English language posed an obstacle at first, Sidibe overcame it through incredible drive and hard work. “I remember attending two different ESL schools, one during the day and one at night after work, I wanted to master English as quickly as possible,” Sidibe said. “I spent two years learning English before enrolling (in) a community college in the Spring of 2013.” After enrolling in community college, Sidibe graduated on time in May of 2015. However, in the Spring of 2016 Sidibe faced challenges at her university following her Associate’s and called her academics into question. “I failed that entire year, I almost dropped out of school due to frustration,” Sidibe said. “But I made
a good choice of moving to Albuquerque at my Aunt's request in December 2016. Another motivating factor for Sidibe to stay in the U.S. and further her studies was her parents. After enrolling at UNM, Sidibe found her niche within the accounting program. However, before even setting foot onto the UNM campus, Sidibe recognized her passion for business and commerce, and decided to put that passion into action by pursuing her accounting major. “I had always loved business in general and America is the birthplace of free trade,” Sidibe said. “It is a dream come (true) for me to be graduating from a renowned institution in America.” As a student, she has achieved great success within her program by applying the same work ethic Sidibe has applied to her studies in the past, learning a new language and overcoming other challenges. “UNM has been so great in that the faculty and career center are such a powerful sources of help,”
Step Up
Sidibe said. “I was actually offered employment by PwC in their New York City office through the help of Anderson's Career Center.” Taking the same perspective she did on finding a new life of providing for herself in New York, Sidibe takes pride in being a non-traditional student. Her route, although longer than the typical four-year track, exemplifies Sidibe’s hard work as an immigrant, and initially not being fluent in the language of the country she found a home in. “I am a non-traditional student because I came from a different country, have an age difference with numbers of my peer in class,” Sidibe said. “I have made lots (of ) great relationships over the past two years, and me being from some place else has allowed me to become more assertive and forgiving than I ever thought I would be.” Macey Rose is a freelance reporter with the Daily Lobo. Former Lobo editor in chief earns her degree By Danielle Prokop @ProkopDani Former Daily Lobo editor in chief, Elizabeth Sanchez now enjoys sleeping in on Sundays instead of working fourteen hours straight to produce the state’s largest student newspaper. Sanchez is now getting ready to graduate from the University of New Mexico with a double major in Spanish and multimedia journalism. Sanchez said through journalism, she has expanded her knowledge of everything from beetles to medical devices. But her favorite part is meaningful connections and sharing the information she finds. “It’s amazing when you get to talk to pretty much anyone you get to find a story within them,” Sanchez said. “Often it’s an inspirational or exciting story you would never expect to get the opportunity to tell.” Sanchez is also majoring in

Spanish to connect with her roots, her family has lived in New Mexico for generations, but she said she felt disconnected from the language. “I wanted to discover a little bit more about my heritage also challenge myself and also be able to communicate with people,” Sanchez said. Sanchez said her passion from journalism was rooted in love of writing poetry in high school. Her interest in writing brought her to a documentary journalism class to continue writing. It was in that class she met Robert Nott, the education reporter at the Santa Fe New Mexican, who encouraged students to write for the teen section, Generation Next. She enjoyed the flexibility of the position, reporting on teen pregnancy and suicide or lighter topics like Earth Day. Sanchez said working at Generation Next inspired her to major in journalism and work at the college newspaper. She worked at the Daily Lobo on general assignment her freshman year. She headed the paper May 2017 to May 2018. Her experience in the past four years is extensive. She’s worked as a mentor editor at Rising Stars, a leadership program for high schoolers. She’s written on LGBTQ issues in The Perspective Magazine as a freelancer. At Bella Media Publishing Company she wrote and edited at a magazine covering the local art scene. She held a summer internship at the Rio Grande Sun in Española. She spent her last semester writing crime briefs for the Lobo and profiling people with disabilities and access issues for New Mexico News Port. Sanchez said she is grateful for

all the opportunities to experience different workplaces, and work for different places. “Every single person I’ve come in contact with — especially at the Lobo — and in my time at UNM has benefited me in one way or another to help me learn and grow into a better person.” Many people told the Daily Lobo that Sanchez has had an impact on their lives. Daven Quelle, the business manager for the Daily Lobo worked closely with Sanchez during her time as editor in chief. She said that Sanchez was a conscientious leader who cared about the people, stories and environment of the paper. “Elizabeth was always upbeat and positive, and worked really hard to create that environment in the newsroom,” Quelle said. “She even recruited her family to come in one weekend to clean, paint and reorganize the newsroom.”
Robert Trapp, publisher at the Rio Grande Sun had this to say about Sanchez’s time at the paper: “Elizabeth was great,” Trapp said. “Wish I could have kept her.” Her younger sister Katherine Sanchez, a freshman at UNM said Sanchez is caring and understanding person. “She is super kind and dedicated, if anyone gave her any task she would do it in a heartbeat,” Katherine said. A highlight of this semester included interviewing former Russian Ambassador Michael McFaul, which Sanchez called great public speaking experience and a foray into broadcast interviewing techniques. “They kept asking me, ‘are you nervous?’ and I was like, well I wasn’t nervous until you asked me,” she said, laughing. “It was a big deal but when you have a big interview like that you have to treat

it like an everyday person.” The next step for her is a little uncertain, she’s waiting on some internships in and out of the state to get back to her. Something on the horizon for Sanchez might be law school, because she said she’s not ready to stop building upon her knowledge. “I’d also like to give myself options,” Sanchez said. “I love the media in general, so if I ever needed to take a break from journalism for a while, I wouldn’t mind practicing media law.” Finally, Sanchez has a couple words of advice for younger students: get involved, take your time with school, and maybe write for your student newspaper. “Write for the Lobo,” Sanchez said with a laugh. “But I also encourage people to try new things, put themselves outside their comfort zone and meet new people.” Sanchez told me about sad happenstance on assignment, when she lost nearly all of the footage from a corrupted memory card. Even though she had to re-do an interview in Socorro, she said the frustration reminds her not to get caught up in perfection. “Experiences like that — which frequently happen — have taught me to be more aware of my equipment and that things aren’t always perfect, and that’s okay” she said. “You just have to push through what goes wrong and deal with it as best you can.” Danielle Prokop is a senior reporter for the Daily Lobo. LETTERS Reduce pollution by reducing the population Editor, So much hoopla about global warming yet no one mentions the
root cause — people. People create the pollutants responsible for global warming. Reduce people and global warming will reduce. Only reducing the pollutants responsible for global warming to some amount decades ago will only last until the population
grows to the point it generates the same or more amount now pumped into the atmosphere. But by then, the the oceans will be overfished and there won't be enough fresh water. Dr. Oz says, "most people pass gas 14 times a day (around 2-3 pints
of gas)." In 2060, the world population is expected to reach 10 billion. That's at least 20 billion pints or 2.5 billion gallons of fart a day not including cow farts. That's a lot of methane and a lot of stink. So it would be to everyone's in-
terest to decrease and reverse the world population growth now. Dorean Grey

Music student credits wife’s support for success By Anthony Jackson @TonyAnjackson Jose Carrillo, a first generation college student, will be graduating this semester with a bachelor’s degree in music education. Carrillo was born in 1975 and raised in Zacatecas, Mexico. He first came to Albuquerque in 1991 as a teenager and brought an affinity for music with him, mariachi music specifically. Carrillo said he first got involved in mariachi music through his family, but did not have the means to play when he was growing up. “We come from a huge family and music has always been a part of our family — it’s like a tradition,” Carrillo said. When Carrillo emigrated to the U.S., he got more involved in playing mariachi music. “Mariachi music is just who I am,” Carrillo said. As a high schooler, Carrillo said he dropped out to take care of his 13-member family. “I was a straight-A student — I went to Del Norte High School in ‘92, just that one year, to learn enough English just to get by and then drop out,” Carrillo said. After that, Carrillo said, he took on a variety of jobs — from working at restaurants to hard labor, Carrillo said he did it all. By 2008, Carrillo said he became a U.S. citizen and four years later he earned his GED diploma. He said he expected to work at Lowe’s or Home Depot after receiving it, but instead he received an offer for a scholarship to pay for his first year of college at The University of New Mexico.

“At first I said, ‘Thank you, but no thank you,’” Carrillo said. “It’s something that caught me off guard — going to college is something that changes your life. It’s a life changing thing.” However, after talking about it more with his wife Cinthia Carrillo and learning more about the scholarship, he changed his mind. “We just stared at each other, a lot of things go through your mind,” Carrillo said. “I thought about it, ‘What if I go back?’” Carrillo said the day he received the scholarship was the first day classes started. classes during his first year. “It was pretty tough — by the second year I became used to it and then I started loving it,” Carrillo said. After getting through his prerequisite classes, Carrillo said he began to get involved in the music department at UNM. However, in 2015 when Carrillo was recruited to perform for an opera performance at UNM, he said he began facing issues toward his accent. “They even said bad words in front of me,” Carrillo said. “UNM professors in your face telling you the F-bomb and
what the F, whatever, out of frustration during rehearsal.” Carrillo filed a complaint and the ordeal was settled. Despite facing issues regarding his nationality, he said he has had his share of success, such as starting the UNM Mariachi Lobo Club in 2013 and winning Lobo Talent in 2016. In Albuquerque, Carrillo said, he performed music for commercials and across the national stage, he performed at the Smithsonian Folklife Festival in 2010 and during a visit for former-President Bill Clinton in Old Town. Other issues Carrillo said he
faced at the University was the age difference and learning to read music, and he said he would not have made it without his support network from his colleagues, friends and his wife. “That support would be financial because we were a little more financially stable since I graduated nursing school and had a better paying job,” Cinthia, the 2012 nursing undergraduate student said. “Of course there was emotional support and all kinds of support you need in school — you need that person to vent to or get your frustrations out.” While Carrillo was getting his degree, Cinthia was taking care of their three children, and when Cinthia was going to school for her nursing degree, Carrillo was looking after the children. “We work together as a team — somehow, I don’t know how, we have made it work over the last eight years,” Cinthia said. “It’s not easy.” After graduating, Carrillo said he wants a job teaching mariachi music. Already he said he has received a couple offers — some in El Paso, Texas and some in Las Vegas, New Mexico — but he wants to start his own mariachi academy in Albuquerque. “There’s a lot of talent for mariachi here — all those kids are craving to learn about mariachi,” Carrillo said. Carrillo said he will be singing the Star Spangled Banner for the graduation ceremony on Friday, Dec. 14. Anthony Jackson is photo editor for the Daily Lobo. The Reserve Officer Training Corps, ROTC, commissions officers into the United States Armed Forces to serve the nation in Active, National Guard, or Reserve units. Since World War I, ROTC has produced the majority of our nation’s military leaders. The concept of training and commissioning the military’s junior leaders at colleges and universities across the country has become an integral part of providing our nation’s military with well rounded, educated officers. ROTC students experience a traditional college life while also receiving leadership and military training. UNM is one of the few schools in the nation to have all four military services represented on campus.

Student-athlete balances school and sports By Robert Maler @Robert_Maler Students often find it difficult to attend college and balance priorities — and student-athletes make it that much more challenging when they decide to throw playing a sport into the mix. Muñoz, who decided to pursue communication as a major while minoring in marketing said she knew right away that the University of New Mexico was the right fit for her. “I felt really at home, especially having some past high school teammates come here,” she said. “It was really comfortable and easy for me to just transition.” Former players Katie Hinman, Alexa Cabrales, Ashley Ballantyne and Casey Murphy all attended high school in Mission Viejo, California, which is also where Muñoz attended. UNM women’s soccer head coach Heather Dyche said she hopes to maintain the connection with what appears to be a recruiting hotbed, but admitted it was the previous staff who got Muñoz to commit. Dyche has been at the helm to see her growth, saying it has been pretty remarkable. She said Muñoz has always been a talented player, but really revealed herself as a leader on and off the field as one of just three seniors on the team this season. “I’ve always felt that she’s had that quality and I think she’s just now really found that in herself and embraced it,” the head coach said.
Most students on campus never get an opportunity to get to know who student-athletes are on a personal level, but Dyche said the one thing she would want people to know about Muñoz is how much of a kind, giving person she is — a selfless type that puts team first. Muñoz said her teammates are like family and helped her get to her goal of graduating. She said academics have always been a huge focus of the program, from the moment a player arrives as an incoming freshman. She credited Dyche for giving her the idea, but created “Lobo Lineup”, a behind-the-scenes video look at other players on the team. “I think that needs to be showcased more — Lobos off the field — we are way more than players, we’re people too,” Muñoz said. The senior said she actually learned a lot about her teammates through the endeavor. She and Amelie Bierle have played all four years together, but Muñoz didn't discover Bierle’s intention to join the Peace Corps until doing a feature on her. Dyche said it is important to harness ways for players to incorporate tangible work skills, and for an aspiring sports broadcaster, the video packaging was good experience. She said Muñoz is comfortable on camera and behind the microphone and recently accepted an internship with the New Mexico United professional soccer team. Muñoz said soccer has always been a part of her life and has helped shape the person she is, but it definitely isn’t the only thing that defines her.

Jennifer Muñoz chases the ball during the second half of a game against Utah State in October.
She cited dogs, chocolate milk and baby cheeks as things she is obsessed with when asked what her other interests are outside of soccer. Some of her teammates snickered when she brought up her beverage of choice. Dyche said it is actually a pretty popular choice and is a great recovery drink. She joked that, if Muñoz plays like she did over the season, she should be able to drink all the chocolate milk she wants. Muñoz’ boyfriend, Alex Hart, confirmed the chocolate milk obsession, quipping that “chocolate milk, sausages and asparagus are her three favorite things in the world.”
Hart, a senior linebacker on the UNM football team, said the two started dating during their sophomore year and have supported each other through their seasons. He said Muñoz has the ability to make him laugh, giving some "interesting dance moves" the nod as the most recent example. He said Muñoz has so many great qualities and feels very fortunate to have someone who cares so much about people in his life. He described her as a strong, intelligent young woman who will “just go get it” after she sets her mind on achieving a certain goal.
Hart also said Muñoz has displayed leadership both in the classroom and on the playing field, something that was especially evident this season after she took it upon herself to help groom such a large number of underclassmen. “She might not be the most vocal, but she is very personable and will lead by example,” he said. Muñoz’ game might appear to mirror her personality — multi-faceted and disciplined, but unselfish at the same time. Hart said she doesn’t have to be the leading goal-scorer to make an impact, crediting her ability to make everyone else around her better as her greatest asset. Hart said his girlfriend has been able to leave her mark both in the classroom and on the field. He said there are so many different things he can envision Muñoz doing in the future and being successful at them, but said he knows it will be something that helps others because that is just the type of person she is. Muñoz said things were not always easy, but getting to the UNM was a big step and graduating is a major accomplishment. She said if she could offer advice to students, it would be to “enjoy the relationships and the little things and your growth as a human being along the way.” Robert Maler is the sports editor for the Daily Lobo. NEW MEXICO DAILY LOBO
Student beats language barrier to graduate By Justin Garcia @Just516garc Rossana Suarez’s journey, which began hundreds of miles away from Albuquerque, is far from over. She is set to graduate this fall with a degree in political science and Spanish. Already in the process of applying to law school at the University of New Mexico, she plans on practicing employment and labor law. “You get to talk to workers from all over the state and realize that there is a lot of injustices and there is really not that many lawyers that represent workers,” Suarez said. “That’s not where the money is at.” Going towards the money would certainly be the easier path. It’s well traveled, but it would be unfamiliar to Suarez. She might even find the simplicity boring, said Suarez.
Suarez said her family moved from Mexico in 2008. Her mother was drawn to the U.S. by the allure of opportunity through education for her children. She was pushed out because of the growing threat of violence, according to Suarez. “When we were out there we lived in a very small town and for women education isn’t your goal,” Suarez said. “Your goal is to get married and start a family. My mom didn’t really want that for us.” Growing up in Mexico, Suarez said getting a job was more rewarding than getting an education. Suarez attributed part of that to the area she grew up in. She said there just weren’t a lot of jobs that required an education. Suarez was in the sixth grade when her family settled in the U.S. She began her second half of primary education in America without knowing English. She said she almost got held back.
Classes helped but Suarez said “it also had a lot to do (with) me having to come home and listen to everything in English.” In her third week of middle school, Suarez was selling pencils she had decorated for a dollar. She was trying to raise $20 to pay for a physical to join the middle school volleyball team. She didn’t want to ask her mother for the money. Suarez said that, at the time, her mother was cleaning homes for $200 a week. After discovering Suarez's enterprise, the principle called her mother. “My mother cried that night,” Suarez said, “she felt like she was not providing enough.” Suarez graduated from Rio Grande High School and the following fall became a Lobo. She said that in her first few years she took mostly online classes. “It’s a little bit more at your own pace and the work is it little bit heavier
so it was a little bit harder,” Suarez said. In one of these online classes, Suarez met Dr. Patricia Lopategui. Lopategui said that Suarez was “one of the most responsible students in the online class.” She said Suarez never missed a deadline and always listened to critique. So, Lopategui said she made Suarez a tutor. Around this time, Suarez’s mother got a job with an oil company in Pennsylvania, leaving Suarez to be in charge of her home and to help guide her 14-year-old sister. She said her mother didn’t want to leave, but that it was a sacrifice she had to make for her family. “My life changed with this decision and realized I had two choices; to feel bad for myself or to instill powerful values in my sister and apply myself to my studies to one day provide for my family,” Suarez wrote in her personal statement, a part of her application to law school.
What could have been a fatal blow to her career, Suarez took on the extra responsibilities while keeping school a top priority. After graduating, Suarez said she wants to stay in New Mexico. “There’s so much potential in this state,” Suarez said. “(Suarez) is a promising young progressive woman who knows the traditional roles women have played and are still using to survive,” said Lopategui, “but she also respects herself enough to know the plight of social injustice to other women, workers and people of color or from different parts of the world.” Justin Garcia is a freelance reporter with the Daily Lobo. Architecture student discovers passion in U.S. By Andrew Gunn @agunnwrites There is a universality to certain qualities and experiences for every student who pursues the challenge of higher education. Late night study sessions, the pressure of examinations, and steep textbook prices are reliable and ubiquitous features of most university narratives. Other stories are unique, and they serve as a reminder of the value of diversity and the power of persistence. Pablo Galarza will graduate from The University of New Mexico on Friday with a Master of Architecture degree and can tell one of these unique stories. Born over 3,000 miles from Albuquerque in the highlands of Quito, the capital city of Ecuador, Galarza’s academic success story began with his first day of kindergarten. María Elena Ordoñez, his mother and an architect based in Quito, told the
Daily Lobo that while other children were fearful or crying over the separation from their parents, Galarza smiled at his own and said, “You must go home now. I will be fine.” His parents saw this streak of independence as a harbinger of a life of determination and an openness to new experiences for their young son. Seeking more opportunity than his native country afforded to him, Galarza moved to the U. S. in 2012. He said he attended the University of Mount Olive in North Carolina on an F1 student visa and a soccer scholarship. Initially studying business, it quickly became apparent that the major wasn't appealing to him, and another important decision had to be made. Immersed in architecture since childhood due to his mother’s profession, Galarza chose the creative discipline as his new major and brought his soccer ambitions to a close. “It was the toughest decision of my life,” he said. “(I chose architecture) mainly because
of my mom. She basically was teaching me architecture without knowing since I was a child.” There was a problem, however— Mount Olive didn’t offer the degree, and a solution needed to be found. A New Mexican and UNM connection to Ecuador and Galarza’s family, forged 42 years ago, emerged in the form of Dr. Marilee Nason. Curator of collections at the Anderson-Abruzzo International Balloon Museum and a 1991 UNM PhD graduate, Nason studied abroad in Ecuador at UNM’s Andean Center and Research Institute in 1976. During her time in Ecuador, she stayed with a local family and soon integrated well into their lives. Nason was present for marriages, births, deaths, and daily comings and goings with various extended family. Omnipresent during all these social gatherings was a cousin: Galarza’s mother. Nason kept in touch with the family over the decades, eventually
spending over six years in Ecuador and completing her dissertation. When she learned of Galarza’s aspirations to study architecture, she sold him on the merits of UNM’s program. Her argument was compelling, and he relocated to Albuquerque in 2013 to begin his studies afresh. “He recognized the fact that he needed to have a solid education and career beyond (soccer),” Nason said. Just as Galarza’s extended family opened their home to Nason during her studies in the 70’s, the roles were reversed. According to Ordoñez, Nason “opened her heart and the doors of her house” for the first year of his time at UNM. “It’s been inspirational to see how he’s really flourished here from his initial application,” Nason said. “His English, both written and spoken, has improved incredibly. For a foreign student, it’s hard to come and pay tuition and living expenses.” Galarza’s mother back home in Ecuador has watched his growth
from a continent away and is extraordinarily proud of her son for his achievements. “Six years have passed since Pablo left home in search of his dreams, with that decision and strong will that has characterized him since childhood,” Ordoñez said. “They have been years of study, of growth as a human being, of sacrifices, many joys, but also of sadness and disappointments. We cried together when things were not going very well, taking courage and getting ahead with this immeasurable love that unites us.” Galarza said he will travel back to Quito to see his family during the winter break, then return to the U. S. with plans to acquire an H-1B work visa and begin the next phase of his architectural life. Andrew Gunn is a freelance reporter for the Daily Lobo.
