JORDAAN The Jordaan is one of the best known areas of Amsterdam, but it still holds some secrets. The Jordaan is the area at the west side of the 'grachtengordel' (main canals). The area was build at the large expansion of Amsterdam in early 17th century, as a district for the working class and emigrants. There are a lot of narrow streets, canals, charming cafe's, small markets and art galleries to be discovered.
Raaf brocante JORDAAN €€€ Deep in the Jordaan‐area, hidden away in a small garage, there is Raaf Brocante. For sale? Vintage and antiques from France. You see, the owners (Jacqueline and her husband) have a big ship they use for inland shipping. So every few weeks they bring tradeswear to France and on the way back they stop at fleamarkets and thriftstores. That's how they fill up that garage and that's why they open only a few days a month. Depending on how much time they spend on the rivers. Let's see if they are in, shall we?
JORDAAN â‚Źâ‚Ź The real Jordaan atmosphere you can taste the best on one of the markets. On the market the new and old generations of Jordaan inhabitants meet and do their shopping. The Noordermarkt is not only the place to score second hand and vintage, but also know for having a great bio market. I usualy go early Monday mornings to look for second hand deals, or on Saturdays for the bio market.

WEST Venture out into the West! It is my area and I love it. So much fun stuff is going on, a lot of development. Temporary stores and restaurants are coming and going, as well as a lot of steady new businesses that are staying where they are. A lot of parts of West are quite interesting, like Westerpark or De Baarsjes. You can find great local markets, little shops and amazing terraces.

Radijs WEST €€€ I'm sending you to this reastaurant called Radijs. It means Radish. You said you wanted an intimite place, out of city centre that serves interesting food. This is one of those places. Here you can sit between the locals, enjoying a radish burger with a glass of Portuguese red wine. Maybe some sticky toffee date pie as desert? Note that they do not take creditcards here. If you want, I can make you a reservation, because they are fully booked most of the time.
