THIRD STREET SOUTH GUIDE TO SHOPPING
J
BY KW COMERFORD AND ARLEEN SHOWALTER PHOTOGRAPHY BY JENNIFER ZIEGELMAIER
Just a short walk from the Naples Pier lies Third Street South - bordered on the west by the Gulf of Mexico, on the East by Naples Bay and on the South by the 10,000 Islands. No wonder this spot was chosen by the original settlers. Third Street South has retained its natural beauty and grace throughout its transformation into one of the most attractive shopping and dining areas in the country. Full of chic and original shops, award winning restaurants and outdoor cafes, Third Street South abounds in glorious landscaping, attractive courtyards and parks in an environment that blends Mediterranean, European and Caribbean influences. Third Street South is an abundance of earthly delights. Shop for everything from internationally chic evening dresses and spectacular jewelry to relaxed tropical clothing and sports gear. Search for art, furniture and antiques gathered from around the world. Stroll the sundappled streets and courtyards, past bouganvillea and banyan trees that have stood for decades. Unwind at a cafe and watch the sun set over the same pier where the first visitors arrived by boat. Stay for dinner under the same endless, starry sky. Third Street South, two blocks from the spectacular Gulf of Mexico beach, was born when Old Naples began in the

late nineteenth century. General John S. Williams and Walter N. Haldeman sailed through Gordon Pass into a beautiful expanse of water which General Williams is credited with naming, along with the town, after the Bay of Naples in Italy. As access was only by water, the Naples Pier was constructed in 1889. A shell road was completed between Naples and Fort Myers in 1918 and, by 1919, the Mercantile Building, which still anchors Swan Court, had become the Seminole Market with the Western Union office upstairs. By the 1920’s, the Tamiami Trail connecting Miami, Naples and Tampa was complete. After World War II, the graceful growth of Third Street South began under the direction of businessman and philanthropist Junkie Fleischmann and his wife, Dorette. Charmed by the area, their first purchase was the Mercantile Building. They transformed it into a shop called the Antique Addict and stocked it with furniture and porcelains purchased in Europe. Ultimately, they built many other buildings, as did others, which shop owners filled with
attractive clothes, decorations and other earthly delights that have always drawn people to shop and dine on Third Street South. Today, Third Street South and Old Naples are on the National Register of Historic Places, and nearly unique among resorts in the United States for having retained many of the original structures. Most importantly, the grace and charm that brought the first settlers here continues to draw their descendants and all the others who have since found this unforgettable place.

Naples’ original shopping and More! sensation. Here, in a setting which recalls Naples’ nautical past, you’ll find more than 32 creative boutiques and great restaurants. Originally a 1920s clam shelling and oyster processing plant, Tin City retains the rustic, maritime spirit of what was once the center of Naples’ fishing industry. Authentically Naples, Tin City lets you discover local treasures of yesterday and today. Tin City is a distinctive shopping experience that you won’t find anywhere else. Our shopkeepers are all local business people who scour the market to find merchandise that is appealing to locals as well as to visitors. There are no chain operations in Tin City. Merchandise is competitively priced and you will get great service.
