CONCORD ACADEMY’S MISSION
What a tremendous year Concord Academy had in 2021–22. The campus community delighted in resuming the natural rhythms of the academic year, complete with full seasons of athletics and performing arts. Our students and educators brought new perspectives to their endeavors. And no one took the little things for granted— including every passing smile.
While many worked tirelessly to complete a smooth leadership transition for the 2022–23 school year, we also marked a monumental turning point in CA’s history: our school’s 100th birthday. We reflected that, from its beginnings, CA dreamed big for its students. The first of many Centennial celebrations lived up to our school’s values—the event was inviting and inclusive of all connected to CA, and focused on how we can collectively use our voices, effort, and privilege to improve our world and our local communities.
Identifying a new head of school, managing the continued effects of the pandemic, and marking Concord Academy’s biggest historical moment to date—all in one year —was no small feat. Thankfully, the CA community does not rest on any individual, and the collective ensured success on all fronts.
Our relationships bring CA to life. The spirited debate in classrooms and conversations over lunch meetings with advisors, the enthusiastic support for students who delve deep in departmental studies, the untold hours parents spend helping other families feel connected, and the selfless service of alumnae/i who carry the spirit of CA forward in their own lives and who give generously back to the school—all of these are essential to CA, each and every day.
We extend our deepest gratitude to every individual who stepped up during this time of transition, reflection, and celebration. Every person listed in this report believes in CA’s promise and its people. Each one of you helped to carry our school over the momentous threshold of its first century. We can only imagine what the next 100 years will bring. Because of you, we know the coming decades will be grounded in the school’s mission. There is much striving to do!

On April 22, 1922, a group of parents assembled to incorporate Concord Academy. In April 2022, CA’s 100th birthday was an occasion to reflect on our origins and how we have evolved. At the first of CA’s continuing Centennial celebrations, we engaged in reflection and action. Together, we set our minds, hearts, and hands in service to others and our world.
In this transitional year, as we continued to adapt to living and learning during the pandemic, we relished every opportunity to interact face to face. Students carried
forward school traditions and stepped wholeheartedly into leadership roles. And countless CA community members participated in the process that led to the historic appointment of Henry Fairfax as CA’s 11th head of school.
The 2021–22 academic year presented an opportunity to pause and define our school, informed by our history and looking with clarity and purpose to the future.

In so many ways, we came together in 2021–22. Trustees invested countless hours to ensure that Concord Academy would emerge from an interim period in a position of strength. The members of the search committee for CA’s next head of school interacted with candidates and the community skillfully and with deep understanding. Parents cared for one another’s students and supported our educators. Alumnae/i, faculty, staff, and students galvanized financial support for the school with innovative and fun approaches. We are immensely grateful for all the ways you showed how much CA means to you.

In April, our community united during CA’s Centennial Days of Service and Sustainability. We were inspired by Adnan Zubcevic ’75, who traveled from Bosnia to receive the 2022 Centennial Joan Shaw Herman Award for his advocacy for immigrants and refugees. On campus, students, faculty, and staff took action on behalf of the environment and local service organizations. And in Boston, Chicago, New York, San Francisco, and Washington, D.C., alumnae/i leaders organized volunteers from across the CA community to support food pantries, farms, parks, and rivers. Just as importantly, while giving back we made the most of the chance to reconnect.

CA’s April 22 birthday marked the beginning of the annual All Community Campaign. Led by enthusiastic members of the faculty and staff—Brendan Crowley, Max Hall, and Trish Saunders—along with 21 student volunteers across all grades, the entire campus community joined together to support the community-driven Annual Fund. Students participated by making outright gifts or promises to give in the future. They also handwrote 92 personal notes of thanks to CA’s loyal Annual Fund donors.Together, our faculty, staff, and students made a combined total of 180 contributions in a groundswell of creative support for the school we all adore.

Concord Academy’s class of 1972 was the very first class to celebrate Earth Day as students at the school. Ever since, members of this class have embraced their role as stewards of the environment and have worked to create, in the words of CA’s mission, “a more just and sustainable future” for those who followed. To honor their shared values while celebrating their 50th reunion, members of this class joined together to create The Class of 1972 Green Seed Fund. Under the care of the Concord Academy Environmental Sustainability Committee, contributions to this fund will support green initiatives at CA.

In celebration of their 35th reunion, and to honor Concord Academy’s Centennial, volunteers from the class of 1987 set out to make history.
The class of 1987 reunion committee, made up of 13 dedicated volunteers, spent the year reaching out to classmates and generating excitement around their 35th reunion, while inspiring participation in their ambitious goals to raise $100,000 from half of the class. Through dedicated work and one-on-one outreach, the group exceeded their mark, garnering more than $109,000 from over 52% of the class (48 donors) in support of the Concord Academy Annual Fund—setting new class and 35th reunion giving records! This triumph was achieved as members of the class made leadership gifts, stretched to give just a little bit more, gave for the very first time, and answered the call to give in the final hours of the fiscal year.
This was collectively a hugely impactful way for our class to celebrate our reunion and I am, as I have always been, extremely proud of our great class and am very grateful for our dedication and commitment to this amazing school.

For more than 54 years as class secretary, Murial “Muche” Desloovere ’67 served as a vital link between members of the class of 1967 and Concord Academy.
After she passed away this year, her classmates determined that a fitting tribute should take the form of the class notes Desloovere had tended and composed year after year. Without her, they wrote in the summer 2022 issue of CA Magazine, “this community of extraordinary women would not have come into being, much less flourished all of these years.” Recounting the story of Desloovere’s life in both beautiful, broad brushstrokes and intimate detail, they remembered, above all, her loyalty—to Concord and to the friendships and sensibilities she developed here. Their gift to one another in writing this memorial was a paean to the lifelong value of friendship.

Consistent financial support makes a real difference at CA: 10% of the school’s annual operating budget comes directly from the Concord Academy Annual Fund. These yearly contributions support so many aspects of an education at CA—our one-on-one student advising program, diverse student life offerings, financial aid program, and talented and passionate faculty and staff. Collectively, individual annual gifts from the CA community make a crucial difference in day-to-day life on campus.
During the 2021–22 school year, 1,662 CA donors joined together and exceeded our $3.1 million Annual Fund goal. At CA, learning flourishes in the context of the relationships between educators and students.
In 2021–22, students directed their learning journeys in many ways. Through departmental studies and independent proposals, they partnered with faculty and staff to shape their educational experiences and share their discoveries with their peers. Here are just three examples of how that ever-unfolding process looked this year.
Topics ranged broadly, reflecting the myriad interests of the class of 2022.
A wide array of senior projects reflected the many ways students pursued their intellectual and creative passions at CA. Some seniors took on hands-on learning, from designing and building a go-kart to constructing an electric guitar. Others created proposals—for a Mandarin class syllabus for heritage speakers or redesigned Boston transit maps. Some combined interests across disciplines, such as mapping the physics of a pirouette. Several took a theoretical approach, analyzing the cultural importance of teen cinema, studying the causes and effects of overconsumption of fast fashion, researching the history of how eugenics affected indigenous populations, or exploring rationality and game theory. Faculty and staff were eager to engage with them about their learning journeys in the spring.
We welcomed the return of a full season of live performance on campus.
We expect CA students to be full collaborators in the creative process, from co-created Dance Project shows accompanied by live student musicians to Directors’ Workshop productions, where experienced theater students take the creative reins. This year—in the first full season of performances at CA since the pandemic began—so many students engaged full-heartedly in their art forms, bolstering our community.
In May, the Performing Arts Department proudly presented a concert titled [She] said, featuring music by, for, and about women. More than 70 students performed in CA’s instrumental and choral ensembles.
The Chameleon Chamber Players debuted two compositions, one by Cecilia Wang ’23 and another by 2021–22 Composer-in-Residence Marti Epstein, and the evening culminated in a stunning combined performance of Antonio Vivaldi’s Magnificat
Student leadership was essential to CA’s approach to educating about systems of oppression.
In 2021–22, Audeep Cariens ’22 spearheaded a series of assemblies in partnership with Grant Hightower, director of community and equity (C&E), and a new Leaders of Color Coalition, which Cariens helped form to lead and represent students of color. Over the fall, winter, and spring, they focused on systems of economy, justice, and education, presenting factual information about inequities across race, gender, and class.
Cariens asked his peers to consider not only how these systems operate across society but also how they shape individual
experiences at CA. Advisors took up the topics in their weekly meetings with advisees, and Cariens was pleased to notice in his own classes that teachers were actively engaging with the framework. “This is only the beginning of a long process,” he says. “We were just setting this up for the future.”
“It’s all developing organically,” Hightower adds. “We’re honoring relationships between students and adults as we identify and foster leadership in this space.”
The Elizabeth B. Hall Chapel is a place that all of us—students, faculty, staff, parents, alumnae/i, and friends—know, understand, and believe in.

The first step in bringing the Chapel to CA was moving it, board by board and beam by beam, from Barnstead, N.H., to Concord, Mass.
Members of our Movers Circle make important gifts that move CA forward together.
$1,922–$4,999
After the Chapel was relocated to CA, it had to be rebuilt.
Much like the Chapel’s original builders, the members of our Framers Circle construct a framework for success for CA.
$5,000–$9,999
Once CA began using the Chapel in May 1957, 20 students, under the tutelage of teacher Molly Gregory, began creating the carvings we know so well.
Through their generosity, our Carvers transform the Annual Fund with gifts that allow students to create their own unique CA journeys.
$10,000–$24,999
In October 1961, the steeple was added to the Chapel to honor all whose memory lives on at Concord Academy.
Our Steeple Raisers are leadership donors and difference makers. Their combined support significantly changes the composition of the Annual Fund, just as the steeple reshaped CA’s Chapel.
$25,000–$49,999
The bell was installed in the Chapel in 1962, completing the six-year building project. Ringing across campus, it reminds us of all it takes to make CA the special community it is.
Our Bell Ringers’ gifts to the Annual Fund sound their support for the school—a peal that all can hear.

A single lantern above the Chapel’s doorway guides students, faculty, staff, parents, alumnae/i, and friends of CA inside.
Our Lamplighters are our guides, our visionaries, and our believers. Their support for the Annual Fund illuminates the way for us all.
2007–2011: $500+ 2012–2016: $250+ 2017–2021: $100+
The Senior Steps, across the Academy Garden from the Chapel, have long been a place for reflection and transition.
Young alumnae/i in our Senior Steps Circle demonstrate their belief in the value of a CA education and inspire a new generation of support for CA.
In June 1957, the carving of 1 Corinthians, verses 1 through 8, was installed in the Chapel. Over the course of a year, students had chiseled each letter in pine heartwood, taken from the dense inner core of the tree. Strong and particularly durable, this material ensured that these words would remain a fixture at CA.
Our Heartwood Society members have named Concord Academy in their estate plans or made planned gifts or bequests to the school, preserving their belief in CA’s mission and extending their support into the school’s next century.

In June 1957, the carving of 1 Corinthians, verses 1 through 8, was installed in the Elizabeth B. Hall Chapel. Over the course of a year, students had chiseled each letter in pine heartwood, taken from the dense inner core of the tree. Strong and particularly durable, this material ensured that these words would remain a fixture at CA.

Throughout her lifetime, Lucia Woods Lindley ’55 was a devoted alumna and long-standing supporter of the CA Annual Fund, as well as many other capital initiatives at the school.
Lindley passed away in December 2020, leaving a generous gift to Concord Academy in her estate. She asked that the majority of her gift be directed to support the school’s endowment, with a small portion set aside to meet an immediate need, the purpose of which was to be “unusual, low-level, or off-beat.” As Lindley wished, in the spring of 2022 the school purchased 10 new, much-needed kayaks for the campus community and will use the remainder of this portion to fund student-generated sustainability projects and other related requests that fall outside of CA’s annual operating budget. Lindley’s legacy at CA will endure through the students and activities supported by her final, forward-thinking gift.

CA’s planned Centennial Arts Center will create a collaborative space for students and faculty to expand our understanding of ourselves and the world through purposeful collaboration and creative engagement.
CA is committed to encouraging students to understand their existence as part of a larger world, through storytelling, connecting, listening, and being fully present with teachers and peers.
With a student body almost twice as large as it was when the Performing Arts Center first opened in 1968, CA must create a new space to sustain our promise to students. The Centennial Arts Center will become the new home for theater, stagecraft, dance, choral and chamber music, jazz, digital arts, film production, creative composition, and cross-curricular collaboration. It will serve as a hub where young people, teachers, and mentors work together, equipped with the tools to support artistic exploration. The building will enable our faculty to embrace technology as a creative tool while maintaining the humanity at the heart of CA.

CA has bold plans, and endowment plays a significant role in our ambitious vision. The funding from a robust endowment supports everything from scholarships, to faculty retention and recruitment, program enhancement, and maintaining our campus environment.
We know that our future success will depend on a healthy endowment that gives CA the ability to support all aspects of our commitment to students and our academic community. Endowment is the key that unlocks a multitude of possibilities for CA’s next century.
CA has always celebrated the spirit of each student while engaging them in thoughtful collaboration so that they can make their unique mark on the world. The goals for our endowment aim to make CA more accessible, expand financial aid, and increase support for faculty.
Bolstering endowment for scholarships is essential to creating a community of students who come from all backgrounds, for whom alignment with CA’s mission should, above all, be the test of admission.
CA’s faculty are among the most knowledgeable, committed, and caring educators in the country. At CA, learning is deeply personal and relational. Supporting our faculty goes far beyond compensation—it means helping them advance their educational goals and further develop their skills. Investing in our teachers supports a cycle of continual growth that raises the capacities of all who live and learn at CA.
Math teacher Desiree Sheff came to Concord Academy in the fall of 2021, having honed her skills as an independent school educator for nearly 20 years. CA wasn’t entirely new to her: Early in her career, she visited for professional development and, with one class studying ellipticals, took an impromptu trip to the fitness center to observe an elliptical training machine in action.
“That engaging feeling of fun and spontaneous discovery that existed in that classroom, and across CA’s campus, had a very early impact on my teaching,” Sheff says.
In her first year at CA, Sheff was delighted to find her students ready for new challenges every day. “CA feels like a really safe and encouraging place for students to try new things,” she says, “and I’m just so glad to be part of it.”

The proof of this sound investment is demonstrated by hundreds of CA graduates who are now creators of positive change in our world today.

A named endowed fund is a gift established in perpetuity, with a portion of annual investment earnings used to provide support for a particular purpose agreed upon by the donor and the school. These funds support all areas of school life, from faculty and curriculum development to maintenance of the school’s historic campus, as well as our financial aid program. Concord Academy is grateful for these funds, which ensure long-term financial stability and represent lasting tributes to faculty, staff, alumnae/i, parents, and friends.

Marten Ann Poole Arts and Sciences Scholarship Fund
Established in 1999, in memory of Marten Ann Poole ’58, to support financial aid for a student with an interest in the arts and sciences.

Amy E. Wells ’89 Memorial Scholarship Fund
Established in 2000, in memory of CA alumna Amy E. Wells ’89, to support financial aid for a disabled student when possible.
To distinguish Concord Academy among independent schools and demonstrate a deep commitment to the highest quality leadership in its administration, the Jacob A. Dresden Head of School Endowed Chair was established in 2007.
Through the generosity of one founding donor, the school raised a total of $2.98 million from 26 individuals, ensuring that there would always be sufficient resources to hire and retain the strongest leaders for this community. On July 1, 2022, Henry Fairfax became the 11th head of school and second Dresden Endowed Chair.
