Welcome to Bach at the Sem! The spirit of sacrificial service puts us in touch with the deepest meanings of life. Our sincere thanks to today’s guest conductor, Dr. Jeffrey Wilson. We are honored that you are sharing your love of Bach, your abilities, and your time to lead us today. Today’s experience wouldn’t happen without the ongoing dedication of the American Kantorei and interim music director Jeral Becker. Our lives are more fully developed because of your service. Ultimately, everything we have has been given to us. While we strive to use our God-given abilities and resources to maintain and increase the quality of life, we do so, or should do so, with full recognition that heavenly grace has often come to us through the sacrifice of others. I ask that you see yourself as part of an ongoing tradition that will bequeath Bach at the Sem to the future. Just as the inspiration for this series by the Duesenbergs, Robert Bergt, Concordia Seminary, and many others blesses us today, so our commitment can make Bach at the Sem a legacy to the next generation. In a culture that is increasingly Philistine, in which young people are exposed to ignoble role models – and wherein economic constraints jeopardize “unprofitable” art, literature, and music – our ongoing sacrifices will make Bach at the Sem endure for generations to come. I invite you to join us in this service for the future good of our community. Christians are observing the season of Lent, a time in which we meditate upon the sufferings of Jesus Christ for our sake and upon His sacrifices to bring forgiveness, help, and hope to people living in a world of hurt. Sincere gratitude to God for his gifts springs from the heart and is seen in our sacrifice for others. As we are ennobled by today’s concert, may we have a willing spirit to pass this wonderful inheritance on to the future. Dale A. Meyer President

Program Notes

“Worthy is the Lamb that was slain, and hath redeemed us to God by His blood, to receive power, and riches, and wisdom, and strength, and honour, and glory, and blessing.” - Revelation 5:12

opening verses of this passage (vs. 31, 32, 34) that announce the Passion and the disciples’ lack of understanding of what is about to happen. The opening movement of Cantata BWV 22 is in two parts. The first of these begins with a pensive, orchestral ritornello for oboe, strings, and basso continuo. The tenor then enters with the opening words of the Evangelist (‘Jesus took the twelve to himself and spoke’), which are followed by the bass – the voice of Christ – announcing the Passion (‘Behold, we go to Jerusalem…’). After an orchestral reprise of the ritornello, the chorus comments on the “cluelessness” of the disciples in the second part of the movement – a choral fugue which aptly expresses the remaining Gospel text (‘But they understood none of this…’).

There is no greater day of celebration in Christendom than Easter, during which we commemorate the Resurrection of our Lord Jesus Christ. But the depth and richness of this festive day is made more profound when we consider what precedes it. Just as warmer and longer days, migrating birds, and flower buds hint at the coming of spring, so do the rites of Ash Wednesday, Palm Sunday, and Good Friday point us to Easter. The composers of today’s works understood this progression of the seasons. Bach, in particular, is unparalleled in employing this understanding to foster Christian discipleship. Today’s Lenten concert points us toward Palm Sunday and allows us opportunity to participate in the story of Christ’s Passion and Resurrection as we hear the Word of the Lord in three Bach cantatas and a closing Handelian chorus. My hope and prayer is that you will grow in your faith as you hear the music and ponder the texts of these wonderful musical works.

In the second movement the interweaving lines of the alto and obbligato oboe convey the readiness of the faithful soul to go with Jesus to Jerusalem. Of particular note in this, the first of two arias, is the sudden harmonic shift that pointedly highlights the word ‘Leiden’ as the alto sings the phrase ‘zu deinen Leiden geh’n’ (‘go to your Passion’). The second aria (No. 4) is a lively, dance-like, da capo aria for tenor, strings, and basso continuo. Of special interest in this movement is the musical text painting that occurs as the tenor sings sustained pitches on the words ‘Friede’ (‘peace’) and ‘ewiges Gut’ (‘everlasting good’).

Jesus nahm zu sich die Zwölfe, BWV 22 One early copy of this first cantata bears the inscription ‘Dies ist das Probestück’ (‘This is the Leipzig trial-piece’).1 It has led scholars to believe that it was performed for Bach’s audition for the Thomascantor post on February 7, 1723. Records show a subsequent performance in Leipzig on Quinquagesima (Estomihi; the Sunday before Lent) of the following year (February 20, 1724). The text, by an anonymous librettist, is linked to the Sunday Gospel reading (Luke 18:3143) in which Jesus and His twelve disciples go to Jerusalem. In fact, the cantata begins with the

Between these two arias, in the center of the entire work, is a recitative for bass, strings, and basso continuo (No. 3). The central textual theme for this movement, and one might argue for the entire cantata, is that of crucifying the old man with all of its worldly passions so that the words of Jesus may be fully understood and obeyed. Florid vocal and instrumental passages at the beginning and ending of this movement emphasize a desire to hasten (‘laufen’) in following Christ’s call to go to Jerusalem joyfully (‘mit tausend Freuden gehen’). The rather ornately decorated closing chorale (No. 5) summarizes the believer’s willing response to be crucified with Christ and transformed into Christ’s likeness.

1 The author of these notes is indebted to Alfred Dürr for his insights on Bach and his cantatas, particularly those presented in his seminal work The Cantatas of J. S. Bach. (Revised and translated by Richard D. P. Jones, Oxford, England: Oxford University Press, 2005.)

Himmelskönig, sei willkommen, BWV 182

the faithful to humble and purify themselves in rededication to the King. The tenor (accompanied by continuo) is quick to add a personal plea, asking for help to follow the Savior (No. 6). Cantata BWV 182 closes with two choruses that speak of the heavenly reward that is given to the Christian through the Passion of Christ. The first of these (No. 7) is based on the chorale ‘Jesu, deine Passion’ and proceeds in similar fashion to the Pachelbel type of chorale arrangement, in which each phrase is prepared imitatively before being sung by the soprano in long notes. The ‘Schlusschor’ (concluding chorus, No. 8) complements the previous chorale chorus through the use of permutation fugue technique, rapid triple meter, and da capo form.

If Cantata BWV 22 anticipates Lent, then BWV 182 ushers in Holy Week. It is likely that “King of Heaven, welcome” was the first of Bach’s cantatas to be composed for his appointment as Concertmeister at the Weimar court. It was premiered just over three centuries ago on March 25, 1714. The text is probably the work of Salomo Franck, the Weimar court poet at the time, and is connected to the Gospel reading for Palm Sunday (Matthew 21:1-9). The opening of the work is a majestic, introductory sonata that depicts the entrance of the heavenly King into Jerusalem. Musically, the procession is portrayed by the usual ceremonial dotted rhythms associated with the French overture, indicating the presence of royalty. However, rather than using bold trumpet and timpani instrumentation, Bach employs a flute and violin duet accompanied by pizzicato (and later bowed) strings to announce the Messiah’s humble entry on a donkey. Gradually, momentum builds during this relatively short instrumental introduction (21 measures), leading into the opening chorus (No. 2) which increasingly adds voices to the ensemble. In this second movement the chorus – representing the gathered crowd, or turba – greets the heavenly King with strictly imitated vocal lines (that is, a permutation fugue). The overall form of this movement is tripartite (ABA da capo form), culminating in a final homophonic choral statement of ‘lass auch uns dein Zion sein’ (‘let us also be your Zion’).

In commemoration of Christ’s salvific work on the cross and resurrection from the grave, we conclude today’s concert with three celebratory choruses. Lobe den Herrn, BWV 143 The first two choruses come from Bach’s enigmatic Cantata BWV 143. Because of deficient transmission, this work survives only in manuscript, leading to doubts about its authenticity. However, the virtuosic opening and closing choruses of BWV 143, which call for three corno da caccia, played today by three flügelhorns, are worthy paeans to the crucified and resurrected Christ. Worthy is the Lamb who was slain

The third movement sets the biblical text in the form of a bass recitative – the voice of Christ – with basso continuo accompaniment. This movement flows immediately into the first of three arias. In the first aria (No. 4) the bass (accompanied by strings and basso continuo) extols the Son of God whose ‘mighty love’ (‘starkes Lieben’) moved Him to leave heaven and present Himself as a sacrifice for the salvation of the world. The flute and basso continuo join the alto in the lovely second aria (No. 5), entreating

The final chorus from Handel’s “Easter oratorio,” Messiah, one of the most sublime masterpieces in the choral-orchestral repertoire, serves as the concert’s benediction and the “Amen” to the many statements of faith found in the texts of today’s program.

Jeffrey Wilson Soli Deo Gloria!

Bach at the Sem Enriches Lives! Bach at the Sem is brought to you by Concordia Seminary and the generous patrons of this series, including the “Friends of Bach at the Sem.” Children, students, families, and members of the community are all enriched by the professional, live performances of the music of Johann Sebastian Bach and other master composers of the Christian musical heritage. The excellent guest conductors and skilled musicians bring this music to life for us to savor. To support Bach at the Sem, as well as the search for a new permanent music director of the American Kantorei, and to ensure the future viability of the series, we have inaugurated a sponsorship program called “Friends of Bach at the Sem.” We are inviting you to become a Friend and one of the important patrons of this concert series. Your gift of $1,000, $500, or $100 is welcomed and encouraged. We were very blessed to have received a new challenge grant for the 2013-2014 season. Today, your gift is especially good stewardship because every dollar you give or pledge will be matched dollar for dollar up to the first $30,000. This is a terrific opportunity to give thanks for the many years of wonderful concerts and to give a gift to join the Friends support program. Please respond as the Lord leads. Every gift to Bach at the Sem is important!

We are grateful to the generous donors who make the Bach at the Sem series possible. A gift has been received for today’s concert in gratitude to God for His gift of music, especially in the persons of Johann Sebastian Bach; the Rev. Robert Bergt (1930-2011), Music Director of Bach at the Sem, 1993-2011; and Professor Melvin Dickinson (1936-2014), Founder and Music Director of the Louisville Bach Society, 1964-2011. Special thanks to: Wayne Coniglio and “Eye-full Tower Records” for supporting Bach at the Sem by contributing a portion of the fees related to the archival-only recording of the program. Concordia Seminary for continuing to provide space and valuable services for the Bach at the Sem series.

The American Chamber Chorale is unique among area choruses, frequently incorporating other artistic mediums into concerts through collaborations with other area arts organizations. Concerts are designed to engage and inspire audiences of all backgrounds as the Chorale and Orchestra present a mix of masterworks from the past and the very best of modern choral repertoire, often giving premiere performances of great works in St. Louis.

Stephen Morton Artistic Director and Conductor

Mindful of our responsibilities as members of the community, the ACC performs concerts each season to benefit local charities serving the less fortunate in the St. Louis area. In the words of Artistic Director Stephen Morton,

Concerts this season benefit:

Kingdom House Feed My People & Let’s Start
