Welcome to the September edition of Concrete Connections. The World Economic Forum’s (WEF) annual Global Risk Report includes graphical representations of how the critical risks facing the world are interconnected. One of the risks identified by the WEF report was prolonged infrastructure neglect which raises red flags for any business involved in major infrastructure projects around the world including those involved in concrete repair projects. Most project managers track costs and schedules, but risk is the all-important third dimension and can be hard to identify, record and analyse. This is especially true for concrete repair projects where there are specific risks associated with structures that are in need of repair. Coming up next month we are holding a seminar that covers broad aspects of risk and liability that you may come across when working on projects. This will be another interesting event that is really worth attending to gain a better understanding on what our liabilities are as different businesses working within the industry. This is my final President’s message as at next month’s AGM I will pass the reigns over to Daniel Rowley with my 2 year term coming to an end. I have enjoyed working and talking with our members, and other companies in the industry, across the country on the challenges they face and getting their feedback on how better we can provide service to our members. It has been a richly rewarding experience and I am proud of the progress the association has made over the past 2 years, with increasing interstate membership, WA sub branches established, the one day training course going from strength to strength and the updating of our website. There is still however, much more for us to do and I am sure Daniel will continue to lead the association in realising the key aims and objectives of the association. I hope to still see many of you at ACRA and other industry events in the future. ~ Andrew Dickinson, President.

MARINE STRUCTURE CONDITION SURVEY Infracorr Consulting Pty Ltd was recently commissioned by a major port authority to complete a condition assessment of six reinforced concrete dolphins at one of its port facilities, as well as an audit of the existing water CP system protecting the steel piles of the wharf. The aim of this investigation was to confirm the condition of representative elements of the structures, determine the cause and extent of deterioration and corrosion and to develop repair options and budgets that address both the short term and the longer term serviceability of the structure. The wharf, built in the 70s, is comprised of a precast concrete deck on steel tubular piles, with six berthing dolphins and four mooring dolphins along the length of the wharf. The structures are is very exposed to the marine environment, with strong winds and high tidal influences. The water ICCP system was found to be performing very well, with the tested potentials of the piles confirming sufficient protection for the steel piles to the Australian standard. Minor maintenance issues were identified that when rectified will ensure the system can continue to perform as required well into the future.
The investigation to the reinforced concrete dolphins involved diagnostic testing of each structure and included equipotential mapping, corrosion rate analysis, reinforcement cover, delamination testing, chloride and cement content testing, carbonation testing and photographic records of all concrete faces.

Galvapulse (Corromap) half cell potential survey of one side of dolphin indicating active corrosion areas (to be CP protected)
The Corromap (Galvapulse) test instrument was utilized extensively to complete the equipotential, resistance and corrosion rate analyses, allowing the corroding areas to be identified along with estimated time for spalling to occur in the future. The survey found a high proportion of the reinforcement in the dolphins to be actively corroding due to very high chloride concentrations at the reinforcement depth. The corroding reinforcement extended to the majority of the dolphins soffit and sides, far more extensive than the current areas of delamination and spalling concrete. The final report included all findings and test results along with recommended repair options of Impressed Current or Hybrid CP based repairs to the majority of the dolphin base and sides. AWARDED $9.3M SEWER REHABILITATION PROJECT FOR SYDNEY WATER
Water Infrastructure Group has been awarded a contract with Sydney Water to rehabilitate the Narrabeen Submain. The project will improve the structural condition and operating performance of the wastewater system and improve access for future maintenance work. The Narrabeen Submain starts in Collaroy and travels through Brookvale before joining the Northern Suburbs Ocean Outfall System which flows to North Head Wastewater Treatment Plant. The project involves repairing: 3,937m of sewer pipe with diameters ranging from 1200 mm to 1800 mm 330m of concrete lined rock tunnel 404m of rock tunnel 34 maintenance holes Stijn Sampermans, Water Infrastructure Group’s Senior Project Development Engineer, said that the work on the submain would commence in August 2013.
“We’ve developed a very efficient and safe access methodology for this type of work on projects like our recent rehabilitation of four deep manholes on the Northern Suburbs Ocean Outfall System. Our crews are fully trained and certified for working in confined space environments and have a lot of experience working in large trunk sewers and dealing with live flow conditions.” “Our proprietary Panel Lok system is the main technology we are using for the relining of this critical sewer. It is a proven product and we have developed an excellent work methodology and strong track record for rehabilitating sewers. We will stabilise the tunnel sections with rock bolting where required and protect them from further acid attack by applying Calcium Aluminate Cement to the tunnel surfaces and maintenance holes,” Stijn explained. Work on the Narrabeen Submain is expected to be completed by mid 2014. More information Leif Ericson 03 9863 3503 lericson@wigroup.com.au

TO REPLACE OR RENEW ? - PROJECT COSTS REDUCED BY 75% Iluka Minerals process water tank, Geraldton, Western Australia. Faced with the prospect of a $1.2 million replacement cost, Consulting Engineer John Montgomery worked closely with Iluka engineers to develop a strategy for the reinstatement of the Iluka Minerals Process Water Tank’s utility. What eventuated was a saving of approx. $900,000, reduced down time of 14 days with the use of Xypex Admix C-5000 and Kuniseal C-31 DS and an extended service life. Built early 1970 with an approx. 1.4 million litres capacity; the 25 metres wide, 3 metres high, steel-walled tank with a concrete foundation had become unserviceable due to corrosion around the base. Approximately 45m3 of Xypex Admix C-5000 dosed shotcrete was sprayed up against the existing metal walls, with approximately 100 lineal metres of Kuniseal C-31 DS placed throughout the floor wall intersection. On completion of the repairs, the tank was filled and while initially there were a number of minor leaks, these reduced to zero within 10-14 days, as the Xypex crystalline development took place. The structure is now fully ‘returned to service’ and remains watertight.
