n the modern world of wedding fashion, rules have given way to guidelines, and even those are often meant to be broken. Both the gals and the guys are spoiled for choice with shapes ranging from subdued to sexy, traditional to trendy, polished to playful. But while options may be endless, truly of-the-moment wedding day looks seem to be sharing a certain style sensibility – a re-imagining of timeless silhouettes with contemporary materials, applications and unexpected accents. Inspiration from decades and designs past are being reinvented for looks that feel both brand new and steeped in history. Gone are the days where "matchy" was most important. Today, the most fashionable looks for your entourage effortlessly blend complimentary patterns, textures and tones for a cohesive and curated overall look – a sartorial story that perfectly expresses the nuances of you.

Saturated jewel tones in fabrics ranging from structured to silhouette-hugging add an air of opulence and luxury.

Bridal party pairs come together with cohesive and complimentary hues and well placed pops of the anchor colour (especially in a tie or pocket square).

Fabric and Finishes If shape is the foundation then fabric and finishes are the paint and plaster. The exact same dress design rendered in delicate lace vs sumptuous satin will look worlds apart. Even two different lace options will give you entirely different vibes based on the type of material used, intricacy, texture, and the way it falls. Then consider beading, appliqués, sequins, jeweled PHOTO: KRISTI SNEDDON PHOTOGRAPHER

bodices, even feathers or faux fur and you can quickly see how these secondary elements have major impact. Again, this is where it pays to try many different options, because even though you may think you’re a crystal bead girl you may really resonate more strongly with metallic embroidery. Take this once in a lifetime opportunity to play with all these options (even if dress-up was never your favorite game) to discover the perfect accoutrement to your overall look.

Consider Colour Wedding attire conversations certainly center around the white dress, but current wedding design leaves us with a lot more to discuss when it comes to colour. From the more familiar ivory, champagne and oyster, to blush, buttercream and even blue, brides have no lack of choice when it comes to selecting a hue that highlights their complexion and features. Don’t shy away from selections with subtle (or not so subtle) hints of colour. You’ll be shocked at the difference these shifts in shade can have to your overall look. Even if a true white dress is what you’re after you’ll still need to compare several offerings to see what variation of white looks best with your skin tone and features. Even the most classic white fabric will have slight cool or warm undertones or hints of wintry silver. It may be hard to tell simply looking at the garment but once you have it on you’ll see which shade really makes you sparkle.

Fit and Foundation You feel like you’ve found the perfect dress, but wait, you aren’t quite done yet! Even the most carefully constructed gown needs to be adjusted to fit your unique shape. Even if you have your measurements taken, and have the dress custom made, there will still be small tweaks to be made once you see how the finished product fits on your figure. The easiest way to ensure that your alterations are minimal is to have PHOTO: CORRINA WALKER PHOTOGRAPHY

your measurements taken wearing the foundational garments you’ll be wearing on your wedding day. This might mean an extra trip or two to your bridal shop, after all you’ll need to select your gown, then go find the undergarments that will work with what you’ve chosen and then return with them to the bridal salon to be measured, but this can save you hundreds ( if not more) in alteration costs not to mention panicinducing fit issues when you can’t hide your bandeau bralette on the wedding day. Even if you follow the above though, budget time and, well, actual budget, for additional alterations. To achieve that “made just for you” look that defines the most show stopping sartorial moments it truly needs to be!

Elements of Delight Almost there beauty, just one last thing to consider in your bridal blueprint – elements of delight. These are all the details that take your look from good to head-turning, show-stopping great. This is where your personality can really come out to play! We’re talking shoes, accessories, handbags, hair pieces, veils and even outerwear ( think capes, coats and wraps or even a leather jacket with your new monogram!) We know you’ve probably blown through enough budget to have you feeling like you’ll be skipping brunch for a LONG time, but you don’t have to look at these elements as one-time-use expenses. Buy jewellery that works with your gown but will also look perfect with other formal wear for years to come. Design a clutch that you’ll use to celebrate New Years, birthdays and nights out with your new spouse or buy that white cape that would make Olivia Pope jealous and rock it postwedding to that power meeting. You’ll get to enjoy these beautiful accoutrement on the big day, but every time you wear them again you’ll remember your perfect wedding moments and of course, your perfect outfit. days of having your love or your mom ( shame!) dress you for one of the most special (and most photographed) days of your life are done. You landed that lady (or lad) all on your own so it’s time to roll up to this day like the royalty you are. While we’ll admit to generalizing here ( some of you

The standard wedding attire choice is a suit, but there are also tuxedos ( the most formal option), blazers ( a step down from a suit in formality with no matching trousers), and sports coats (even more casual yet). Your wedding venue, the formality of the wedding, and yes, your partner's input, will all influence which is the best choice for you. But one truth remains inarguable. The key to a suit ( or sports coat, or tux) looking good is fit. If you’re buying an off-the-rack suit ( versus a bespoke suit, which means it’s measured and then made just for you) you’ll need to invest in some tailoring to ensure a flattering fit. Areas to consider are shoulders, overall length, sleeve length and waist with the first in this list being most difficult to adjust and the last being

27

Time to Suit Up

CONFETTIMAGAZINE.CA

And while we’re still speaking suits, consider fabric. More expensive isn’t necessarily better but the ultrafast fashion options with prices too good to be true look exactly that way. Some truth here - if you can wrangle up the scratch to visit a quality menswear shop you’ll walk away with wedding day attire you’ll be able to wear for years if not decades, no exaggeration.

Don’t Shy Away from Colour Sure you can’t go wrong with classic black but there are so many colour options that will not only look great on your big day but will add some serious style points to your wardrobe going forward. Blue (every shade), Grey, Deep Green, Oxblood, Charcoal and Burgundy are all seriously sophisticated choices, even patterned jackets are turning up on menswear runways and style superstars. We’ll contradict ourselves here for a minute. When it comes to colour you’ll probably want to get some guidance from whoever’s been making most of the wedding decisions to ensure your colour choice “works” as part of the larger vision, but feel confident coming to the table with colour suggestions and a willingness to play outside the ( black) box.

Accessorize But Go Easy With your newfound confidence you might feel compelled to pile on every accessory known to man (see what we did there). There are endless options when it comes to dialing up your wedding day dressing: cuff-links, lapel pins, ties (bow or otherwise), suspenders, socks, pocket squares, pins, and timepieces, but carefully selecting just a couple of cohesive pieces is the key to looking put together. Consider the style elements you’ve already chosen, the type of wedding you’re having ( Beachy casual? Classic formal? Rustic retreat?) and finally, the things that resonate most with you. After all, your wedding day attire is all about showing off the best version of you ( and making your babe feels #blessed to be marrying you of course). And finally, If You’re Going to Splurge Shoes, Timepiece, Scent – Don’t believe us? Yes your babe can tell, yes dialed up versions of all of these will turn heads, and yes, you will absolutely feel like THE man. You can thank us later.

Q: H ow are bridesmaid’s gifts evolving? What would you recommend as the best gift a bride could choose for her tribe? A: We used to see brides try to find jewelry for their attendants to wear on the actual wedding day. However, it is really challenging to find jewelry in matching multiples, which is formal enough to wear on the big day and still suits your bridesmaids’ individual styles. Now brides are gifting more casual pieces in styles their tribe will actually love and wear AFTER the wedding. We recommend checking out our local Calgary brand, Peaks & Prairies. All pieces are inspired by Canada, made in solid sterling silver or 14k gold, donate 10% of proceeds to the Nature Conservancy of Canada, and almost all can be engraved. So why not get your bridesmaids something you

Generally speaking when a ring is exceptionally wide, it doesn’t lend well to swelling fingers, which is really common when it’s hot outside, playing sports or after a few beers with the guys. Also look for a band that has a comfort fit to it, which is a smooth beveled inside that allows for swelling, doesn’t have any harsh edges and is generally more comfortable overall.

Mountain Beauties: One of the things we’re hearing more from

Mountain Beauties: It’s important to ask about their credentials

clients is that they’ve done their research online and have seen

One of the challenges is lots of providers will post images from

your health and safety. Certified professionals have been educated

professional models. This sets the expectation that they can create the same look on a real wedding day which isn’t necessarily realistic – wedding days are busy, unpredictable and REAL. So our biggest piece of advice would be to ask for pictures from real weddings where they have done hair and makeup so that you can see what they can actually create for your day.

You also want to ask how long it will take per service. For example, for brides we budget 45 minutes per service and 30 minutes for other attendants. Less experienced providers may take significantly longer, so it’s important to not only consider financial budget but also time budget as well. Also find out if they can come to you! There can be a big difference in quality of your day if you don’t have to rush around.

Confetti: Any absolute don’ts? Mountain Beauties: DO NOT get intense facials or skin treatments within 30 days of your wedding. It usually takes longer than this for full affects to take hold anyway, and if you have a bad reaction you may not have enough time for it to remedy. For makeup- follow your regular skin routine before getting your makeup done. Don’t do anything new in the 24 hours leading up to wedding – we don’t need your skin reacting. Also, please wash and dry your hair the night before, the “dirty hair styles better” is a myth, but also don’t come with freshly washed, wet hair. Confetti: Any final words of advice? Mountain Beauties: The most important thing that brides should consider on their day is THE LOVE. We see brides the morning of the wedding and they’re the most stressed out before everything happens. ntimate or extravagant, destination or backyard, no

matter what style of wedding you’re hosting, you’re going to be #SorryNotSorry for months, filling up your Instagram feed with those pics. Your wedding photos are a timeless, priceless memory of the day your family was created and you want those memories to be perfect - for your profile pic and for your portrait wall at home. Finding talented wedding photographers has become faster and easier than ever, thanks to engrossing social platforms like Pinterest and Instagram, but it’s also brought on exponential choices. You have access to the portfolios of wedding photographers from all over the world (almost all of which are willing to travel), and those photos are right at your fingertips. But with all that choice comes a burden - it makes it even harder to narrow down your prospects to that one PERFECT photographic match. While you have more and more #WeddingPhotogs to choose from, the essential elements to choosing a wedding photographer you’ll have a great experience with haven’t changed. You need to love the style of photographs they take, and you need to have a strong rapport and communication style with that photographer. No doubt you’ve spent hours stalking photos on Instagram, so make sure you pay attention to how your potential photographers communicate with you. Are they ultra casual or the consummate professional? Are they prompt with their responses and do they provide you with all the information you asked for (and then some)? Are they full of great ideas that give you a can’t-wait-to-pose buzz, or are you the one driving the creative angles? No answers to the above are right or wrong – it’s all about your personal preference. As you’re interviewing and meeting photographers, take a second to really audit how you feel when you finish phone calls or leave meetings. Do you feel excited or do you feel uncertain? Do you feel confident or do you feel anxious? Your gut will tell you if your wedding photographer is the right pick - make sure to listen to your instincts before you book!

Exceptional Engagement Photos Your engagement is a magical time in your relationship when you are building dreams together and learning how to navigate through life as a team. 37

CONFETTIMAGAZINE.CA

An engagement shoot is an amazing way to capture this excitement, show off your personality as a couple outside of the formality of the wedding day, and find out how you work best together in front of the camera. You will never regret photographing yourselves as a couple in the weeks leading up to your wedding day – here’s how to make it perfect.

Tip 1 Ask For Your Babe’s Input - This may seem obvious, but so many couples forget to collaborate on their vision for the shoot, so start by asking your partner what they want. On the one hand, they might not have any ideas, but on the other, they might have some great nuggets of inspiration.

Tip 2 Bring Props - Whether it's a chalkboard you can write silly things on, your fur baby or a picnic basket full of fresh fruit, props add easy livelihood to your engagement photos.

Tip 3 Plan Your Outfits - Obviously you’ve been planning your own outfit, but make sure it works with your babe’s outfit too!

Tip 4 Be Real - If you're a more casual couple choose a setting that feels cozy and comfortable. If you're more formal and fancy it's great if your photos reflect that style. These images are all about capturing who you really are together. To Have and To Hold PHOTOS: BUFFY GOODMAN PHOTOGRAPHY

A

wedding ceremony is one of life’s most anticipated experiences, but it’s common to hear newlyweds remark that their ceremony “flew by in an instant.”

For this reason, couples are getting creative in preserving pieces of this most special of moments to savour long after the wedding day demands are done with.

Your Photography Style PHOTO: ORANGE GIRL PHOTOGRAPHS

O

ne of the most important considerations in choosing your wedding

photographer is understanding the style of photography you prefer. While someone might be a great photographer, if the type of images they capture aren’t in line with your vision, you won’t get the shots you want no matter how hard you both try. Read on to understand the most common styles so you can ask the right questions and better describe your vision prior to signing with your personal wedding day paparazzi.

1. Classic/Traditional You’ve seen these photos and now you want them for your own. The classic style of wedding photography is exactly that - traditional, classic images that stand the test of time. This type of photography isn’t contrived, it’s just patient, waiting for those classic wedding moments and poses to present themselves so they can be captured with a keen eye and elegant form. PHOTO: BRIGHT PHOTOGRAPHY

51

CONFETTIMAGAZINE.CA

PHOTO: MINTED PHOTOGRAPHY

PHOTO: BRZ PHOTOGRAPHY

2. Photo journalistic/Documentary

3. Fashion/Editorial

If you’re looking for photography to document your perfect day just as it was ( with an eye for pretty of course!) then this is the style for you. Spontaneous, real and emotive, you’ll have priceless pics of best friends laughing, your love kissing you on the sly, and grandma dancing up a storm.

If you want your photos to look like the fashion pages out of your favorite bridal magazine (thanks, we love you too), then fashion focused photography is for you. In this style of photography, more emphasis is put on perfect composition and ensuring that everything looks “just so” in each shot versus other forms that are more focused on capturing the moment even if a hair, a wine glass or a bridesmaid is out of place.

PHOTO: BARRIE DOWNIE PHOTOGRAPHY

PHOTO: BARRIE DOWNIE PHOTOGRAPHY

4. Artistic/ Creative

5. Dramatic/Stylized

Willing to have less pics of you both looking at the camera and more of you seamlessly integrated into art photographs worthy of your carefully curated gallery wall? Then this style of photography is for you. Less concerned with documenting your makeup, your flowers or your profile-photo-style couple shot, artistic shots are about conveying the mood, the setting, your playfulness, creativity and personalities, often in unexpected ways. Think gauzy golden hour light, distance shots with epic vistas, or close-up details of your dress that only you will recognize.

These are those show stopping images that looked like a still capture from a major motion picture. Think back lighting, mist or fog billowing around the bride, lightning striking in the background or raindrops seemingly frozen mid -air as the couple kisses. These types of photo affects are achieved with extensive shot planning, the application of external light sources and often special effects. If you’re looking for highly stylized photos, in addition to more candid captures, then describe these elements and show some similar shots to photographers you interview to see if they’re comfortable with this style.

flowers, spun sugar or even tiny sweet treat toppers like macarons, meringues and candied fruit. Cakes are a centerpiece of your reception, and these show-stoppers deserve to take center stage. Not only do they look gorgeous, they taste amazing too. Bakers continue to take creativity to new heights, producing exceptional flavours that are anything but ordinary. Flavours modeled after favorite family recipes, herbal infusions and even savoury options open up a whole new world of wedding cake – see below for some of the wildest ones we’re noticing now.

93

CONFETTIMAGAZINE.CA

Cocktail Infused Cakes Cakes infused with champagne, spirits and even robust stout are getting the party started on a sweet note. Pair with complimentary flavours like berries for champagne, stone fruits for whiskies and indulgent chocolate or coffee with stout for a dynamic and delicious dessert experience.

Savoury Infusions Think lemon and basil, plum and cardamom, vanilla and lavender; these offerings are anything but sickly sweet and appeal to refined palates who appreciate culinary creativity. The trick here is in the subtlety of the herbal notes; this is an occasion where just a hint is what you’re after.

Cakes That Aren’t Cakes at All Cakes made of wheels of cheese in a variety of flavours satisfies those who’d rather enjoy savoury than sweet (it’s also a perfect accompaniment to that wedding wine). Or share one of your favorite treats usually reserved for weekend mornings with all of your guests with a cake made entirely out of pancakes, waffles or crepes!

Sagittarius (November 22 - December 21) Bird of Paradise - If you’ve ever met a flower that loves to boldly put itself out there, it’s the Bird of Paradise. Adventurous, ornamental and exotic, it’s a great match for Sagittarius, lover of excitement, travel and adventure.

Capricorn (December 22 - January 19) Lily - A polished bloom for a polished sign, lilies symbolize purity and refinement, as well as elegance and grace, all elements that are classic telltales of the sign of Capricorn. They also pair so well with so many different blooms, you’ll have no problem adding a few unexpected pops to your otherwise elegant arrangement.

Aquarius (January 20 - February 19) Orchid - Orchids have a look that’s modern and mature, one that’s totally unique in comparison to their fellow florals. As Aquarius is a sign that’s known for being drawn to things that are untraditional and unconventional, we think it’s a match made in the stars.

Pieces (February 20 - March 20) Hydrangea - The sign of Pieces is known for being deeply in touch with emotions and creativity, and hydrangeas are the blossom that symbolize exactly that – deep, heartfelt emotions. With a range of beautiful colours, it’s a big impact bloom for big hearts!

YOUR WEDDING BRAND IN PRINT

PHOTO: CORRINA WALKER PHOTOGRAPHY STATIONERY: PINK UMBRELLA DESIGNS

Break out the confetti, it’s FINALLY time to pick your wedding stationery! The first of many planning milestones, couples get giddy when it comes to choosing wedding stationery, and we totally get why. Your decor, your dress, your music – they’ ll all get hours of your attention discussing, considering and carefully selecting every detail, but you don’t get to enjoy all that hard work until the actual day of your marriage. You order your wedding invites months (sometimes up to a year!) in advance of your big day so when they arrive from your stationers, it feels like the first of so many amazing moments, because it is.

101

CONFETTIMAGAZINE.CA

A

B

So babes, get out your wedding binder and fire up Pinterest, because your invites are your personal brand in print. They do way more than just give your guests the particulars of your wedding (that’s what makes designing them so much fun). Your wedding invitations represent you, your relationship and the feel of your big day. Whether you’re going for high end luxury (the Gucci of invites), or low key and mellow (with a Hershel style and feel) those invites are the first impression piece that offers a through line to every other element of your wedding. The knowledge that they’ll be living on guest’s fridges for years to come, means you’ll want to make sure your invites are the perfect reflection of your #InstaBrand as a couple. If you’re a Millennial Pink duo who gravitate towards hanging out on pizza shaped pool floaties then make sure your invites have a colour and vibrancy to them that represent your playfulness. If succulents and macramé wall decor are all over the home you’re building together, then consider an

C

invitation set with natural colours and linen textured paper. For a meme loving couple, infuse your invites with puns and clever anecdotes that showcase how much you two love to kid around on the couch. Classic, romantic, modern, bohemian or your very own design movement- play with paper styles, colour palettes, language styles as well as fonts and graphics that bring your brand full circle, alive on the page. The Officiant’s Guide to Ceremony Success

Officiant Tamara Jones gives us the goods on what makes for a great ceremony. What’s the most important consideration for couples when planning their ceremony?

117

CONFETTIMAGAZINE.CA

Any great ceremony ideas you’d want to share with couples? I’ve always been a big fan of writing down your feelings and emotions; exchange love letters during the ceremony and then put them in a box along with your vows and a bottle of wine or a special treat to be opened on your anniversary – one, five, ten years, however long you can stand to wait! Another beautiful thing I’m seeing more of is blended families incorporating the kids, no matter how old they are, 5 or 25. It’s recognizing they are part of this new version of your family as well. If there are reasons they can’t be part of the actual ceremony, I still encourage couples to include them in the preparations like going to pick out attire, or getting their hair done together, it’s just great to honour those extended connections.

Why is an experienced officiant so valuable? It’s my job to coach couples through their ceremony. If they are getting too overwhelmed or emotional it’s my job to get them back to balanced. Everyone does different things when they get nervous. Some giggle, some hiccup, some make jokes. My job is to get them back in the present, in the now, so they can enjoy that moment in time. It’s just really important couples feel confident, comfortable and centered in their ceremony because it goes by so fast. Have fun, smile, enjoy it. Just because you’re getting married in a formal environment doesn’t mean you can’t have the time of your life. PHOTOS: KRISTI SNEDDON PHOTOGRAPHER | OFFICIANT: TAMARA JONES

TOP 5 Considerations when choosing a venue

W

hen it comes to your wedding reception, few things have a larger impact than

the venue you choose. Everything from the number of guests you can invite, to the food you’ll eat and the entertainment you’ll enjoy all depend on the space you select. But how do you know what’s right for you? Consider the way you already spend your time as a couple as a first step in finding your perfect fit.

Your Saturday Nights are Spent Sipping and Savouring For you, food (and probably great wine) takes center stage for your most memorable of occasions, and nothing says celebration better than sharing a palate pleasing meal with your nearest and dearest. Consider a restaurant as a venue, preferably with the kind of cuisine you crave most and an ambience that’s just as delicious.

Friendly Competition is Your Version of Flirting If you’re the kind of couple that loves to play together, whether on the soccer field, at the local pinball pub, or at the kitchen table over a game of cards, consider a less formal venue where you can add opportunities for guests to interact over games, challenges and chances to celebrate your love through laughter – think a garden wedding with croquet or horseshoes, or a library wedding with customized crossword puzzles featuring facts about you and your love.

Gallery Openings Get You Going

1. How many are coming?

The size of your guest list will quickly eliminate certain venues. Plan for a few extras to ensure you’ve got enough space for everyone.

2. Who will be in attendance?

Elderly guests attending but thinking of a rooftop venue only accessible by stairs? In love with a lounge space but have kids coming? Confirm you can accommodate those you want to share your day with before committing to a venue.

3. What kind of reception will you have? The right venue for a formal sit-down dinner is often quite different from a casual cocktail affair. Consider the experience you’re trying to create.

They can then use these points at over 5000 properties around the world! Often there are additional promotions around weddings that can turn into even greater points. In between nibbles of delicious tapas and sips of cold cava we quizzed proprietor Jeff Hanna of Barcelona Tavern on what makes this venue a beautiful choice for your big day. Why is Barcelona unique as a Wedding venue? Barcelona provides the intimacy of a restaurant with the flexibility of a larger event space. We’ve got a great open floor plan with lots of room for communal tables, dancing and great sightlines for speeches, but we’ve also got a number of elevated areas, private dining rooms and a gorgeous loft to add visual interest and lots of opportunity to create engaging offerings to explore like gift tables, photobooths, and even whisky bars or wedding party lounges. There’s no end to the creative ways couples can design our space to reflect their unique vision. We really are a beautiful blank canvas with clean, contemporary finishes that support all styles of décor. In my opinion we’re one of the few venues that can accommodate a cocktail style reception and a sitdown formal dinner equally well.

Getting Your Light Right A

One of the easiest, though often overlooked, ways to transform your wedding space is lighting. You can use its transformative power in so many ways!

Change the Ambiance There’s a big difference in the way you feel on a brightly lit balcony compared to a candlelit cellar. Picture the kind of emotion you want to create in your space, think of times you’ve experienced that ambiance before, and use lighting to recreate that tone.

Emphasize the Important Make sure the areas that will be the center of guest attention (and photographs) are well lit. Think ceremony space, head table, podium, cake table and dance floor. Not only should the lighting draw attention to these areas but it should be flattering for those being photographed as well – say no to shadows!

Disguise the Less Desirable Are you less than impressed with the ballroom wallpaper? Not a fan of the overbearing artwork? Use strategically placed light to draw

attention away from the elements you don’t enjoy and you’ll quickly see them fade into darkness.

Add Some Energy

PLANNING AND DÉCOR

CONFETTI 2019

The ABC of Wedding Décor Have you pinned and pasted and pulled out pages to the point that your inspiration feels overwhelming? Don’t panic. We can break your wedding day décor down to simple ABCs. Aesthetic Take a look at everything you’ve compiled. Look at it as a whole and you’ll surely see some trends and common themes emerging. Sure one might be nautical and preppy while another is woodsy and romantic but perhaps they both have a crisp blue, ivory and silver palate and a casual sensibility. Dig into what it is that you like about all of your inspo when viewed as a whole and you’ll nail down your overarching aesthetic.

Bang for Your Buck Now that you’ve finalized the feeling you’re trying to create consider your costs. Do some research on the items you’d like to include and see where your budget lands in relation to your initial vision. How can you maximize your impact? Say you love florals

PHOTO: TWENTY TWENTY PHOTOGRAPHY; VENUE: SKY BISTRO AT BANFF GONDOLA; DESIGNER: MOMENTS BY MADELEINE; FLORAL DESIGN: FLOWERS BY JANIE

but can’t fathom breaking the bank on blooms. Get strategic about where you can place florals, and include them only in the most visible areas. Because these areas are the most eye catching, guests will still feel like your venue is awash with petals. Remember, you can borrow budget from areas you care less about to afford the items that most support the aesthetic you’re trying to achieve. Perhaps luxury linens is what will get you closest to your soft and romantic vision. Feel ok with scraping your guest favours to fund it!

Composition Now think of how you’ll place all these elements to transform your venue. Consider guest comfort and how they’ll interact with the items you’ve chosen. You’ll want to ensure seating is not just stunning but also comfortable, that centerpieces are impactful but not at eye level, and that menu fonts are fabulous but still able to be seen in soft candlelight. And if all of the above still seems a like a bit too much to tackle you can always move to D for Designer – hire one! Selecting Your Support W

hen it comes to building your wedding

day dream team the offerings of the wedding professionals you’re trying to procure can sometimes be unclear. Here’s a primer on who’s who in the world of weddings.

157

CONFETTIMAGAZINE.CA

Wedding designers are dedicated exclusively to achieving the visual aspect of your day. They’ll work with you to understand your aesthetic, create a design concept, provide detailed floor plans for décor placement and can help you source all of the décor elements, floral suppliers and print experts to ensure your wedding looks exactly as you’ve envisioned, only better! A wedding designer is the perfect fit for you if you’ve got great organizational skills but aren’t the most artistically creative.

Wedding Planners endeavour to make your planning experience as seamless as possible. They manage logistics, budgets, timelines and vendor bookings, using their experience and relationships to negotiate on your behalf. They’ll likely attend most meetings with your vendors, and will participate in venue site visits. Planners walk you through your ideal wedding day, moment by moment and then craft the plan to make it a reality. Many are also involved in the design of the wedding, creating the design plan and then sourcing all of the design elements as well as managing all of the day of production. Basically, they’re your wedding one-stop shop. A wedding planner is what you’re after if you want the planning process to be as stress free as possible and you’d feel most comfortable collaborating with an expert on creation of your perfect day.

Wedding Coordinators manage the timeline and logistics of the wedding day itself; the less shiny but undeniably mission critical production points that make each moment work. While they aren’t part of the earlier planning they’ll usually get involved about one month out to confirm that all orders are confirmed, timelines are created and vendors know where to be. They’ll coordinate all deliveries and load in, set up and load out of your décor on the day and will act as the central point of contact for all of your other vendors. A wedding coordinator is your wish come true if you’ve got the vision and the organizational skills but just need someone to trust with execution while you enjoy your day. No matter what level of support you choose you’ll be happy to have expert assistance to compliment you in the areas you are least confident. SUSAN BILL JULY 13, 2019

REAL WEDDING

Rocky Mountains "Life has many blessings. One such blessing was meeting Bill Cavagnaro on a diverted Delta ATL/LGA flight which was subsequently grounded for 18 hours. Another was choosing Lynn Fletcher of LFW to plan our destination wedding in Banff Springs. I knew nothing of the area except that Bill and I fell more in love with each other and this special place when we visited it 6 months after we met. After we became engaged on June 22, 2018, we knew that the castle the Canadian Rockies was the place for our fairytale happy ending. What I didn’t know is that I would meet a very special lady who would hire the most amazing vendors to seamlessly execute our wedding." – Susan, Bride PHOTOGRAPHER VENUE- CEREMONY VENUE- RECEPTION

“Our wedding was truly a dream come true. I loved that every part of our wedding had a purpose, especially the little details which I really focused on making authentic and true to our personalities. The calligraphy by Gian Lee was a real favourite. She was able to incorporate my husband’s love for fly fishing on our table numbers and seating chart. I loved how this detail represented him at our wedding. Without question our venue will always hold a special place in our hearts—simple yet naturally beautiful and it perfectly captured our style! The stunning greenhouse with all the hanging flowers and lights created the perfect casual garden party atmosphere we wanted to have.” - Jillian, Bride

REAL WEDDING

Rocky Mountains “The Fairmont Banff Springs is a very special place to us - it is where we had our first vacation together and where we fell in love. We decided to get married somewhere unique from our Boston, MA home and chose Banff because we wanted our friends and family to fall in love with the town the way we had. Even the threat of rain did not dissuade us from having our ceremony on the Outdoor Terrace. The clouds broke and provided a spectacular glow of sun on the Chuppah right as we said our vows! It was truly a day to remember and everything we had hoped for. We can’t wait to return!” - The Couple

"Our absolute favorite moment of the wedding was seeing each other for the first time. Each of us took a moment during the ceremony to tell each other how amazing we looked and how much we loved each other. This is something we will always look back on fondly because it represented the culmination of months of planning and anticipation of the big day. In addition, completing our wedding vows surrounded by our closest family and friends in an beautiful, intimate location was extremely special to us. We will cherish the memories we made that week for a lifetime, and feel so blessed to have been able to share our special day and begin our new journey together with the ones we love most." - Arpen, Bride

REAL WEDDING

"A mid-September winter wonderland created a magical beginning for these high school sweethearts. Krysta’s veil was hand sewn by her grandmother & her wedding band composed of elements from her mother’s original wedding set. Russell sported a pair of “The Flash” socks under his suit, the first superhero T.V. series he could finally get Krysta to watch. We couldn’t help but dote on the sentimental moment between mother and daughter as Krysta read a letter from her mom, written when Krysta was just three, gifted with a custom drawing of 3 generational dresses, grandma's, mom's and of course hers."– Tkshotz Photography

"Our favorite part of the most magical day? I think we would both agree having all of our favorite people in one place. But that's a bit cliché, so I'm going to go with my next favorite part. Right before walking down the aisle, our wedding concierge offered a shot to my dad and I. Neither of us are shot people, but especially not him. My dad is very simple and would prefer a beer in his backyard on the farm. At first he declined, then added "what the hell" and took the shot and slammed it back. It was so unlike my typically fairly reserved dad and it melted my heart to see him enjoying the day. It was completely unexpected and something I will always remember from that day."– Kyla, Bride Emily Exon Photography

"For this couple, their big day was all about family, friends and pure, comfortable love. It was a true reflection of their contrasting personalities – Gillian elegant and understated with impeccable taste, and Josh with a bolder, more playful personality. Gillian carried pussy willows as part of her bouquet; her late mother’s favorite flower. Josh saved a serving of his graduation single malt whiskey to share with his bride on their wedding day. Gillian's vows were sweet and sophisticated, Josh included more humour. Their guests were treated to an elegant meal, speeches that made you laugh and cry a fabulous dance party to round out the night – all part of a day that highlighted exactly what is to love about this amazing couple." - Kristi Sneddon, Photographer PHOTOGRAPHER VENUE- CEREMONY VENUE- RECEPTION OFFICIANT PLANNER

"Roxie and Ravi thought of every detail with their guest’s experience being a top priority! Ravi and his groomsmen started their day with axe throwing and scotch tasting followed by an outdoor shave parlour before donning their blue suits. Roxie and her girls enjoyed a relaxing morning of mimosas while getting their hair and makeup done, followed by some “knife dancing” preparations. The couple joined their families through two beautiful outdoor wedding ceremonies, Western and Zoroastrian. TAKARA BRENNA AUGUST 26, 2018

REAL WEDDING

Edmonton

“This wedding will always be special in my heart, the girls were so nervous seeing each other for the first time, it was a truly magical moment when they turned the corner and saw each other. Brenna dropped to her knees with pure joy and love seeing her Bride. Both Myself, Buffy and the couple were in tears. This set the tone for the day. True Love at its finest!” – Lisa, Everlasting Impressions Wedding Planning

JOELLE CAM SEPTEMBER 8, 2018

REAL WEDDING

Edmonton

“Joelle, a wedding planner by day, couldn’t help but want to take a unique approach to planning her and her fiancé Cam’s wedding. They met for a wildly romantic first look down in a ravine close to their home, and they journeyed together in true charm in a 1957 Rolls Royce Silver Ghost. They recited their personal vows during a twilight ceremony followed by champagne hour clinks and an exquisite cocktail style reception featuring a beautiful custom wood bar built by the bride’s parents. In lieu of a head table, this bride and groom dangled their toes from a wooden swing that was layered in greenery and beautiful blooms.” - Ang Roxburgh, Photographer

REAL WEDDING

Los Cabo, Mexico "Colin and Kyle wanted to create the perfect vacation with their wedding as a bonus. The idea of bringing a group of their closest friends and family together for epic events and celebration was all they wanted. From trivia night and sunset photos for the whole group they really lived the best vacay life. The Paradisus Los Cabos Hotel was thrilled to make Colin and Kyle's wedding day dreams come true."– Cole Hofstra, Photographer

REAL WEDDING

Mazatlan, Mexico "Our absolute favorite moment was our entrance into the reception. We had our favorite song playing, “Got My Mind Set On You” by George Harrison and everyone was shaking their maraca. The vibe was so pure, positive and exciting! We then walked around each table and hugged each guest, shed a few tears, and thanked them for traveling over 2,000 miles to celebrate with us! It was the best way to kick off our party!"- The Couple, Ashley and Brent

ERICA JUSTIN JANUARY 14, 2019

REAL WEDDING

Sayulita, Mexico "Erica and Justin were married on a bluff overlooking the Pacific Ocean where the jungle meets the beach in the gorgeous town of Sayulita, Mexico. The wedding was a mix of relaxed beach vibes yet still elegant in the details (like the outdoor reception lit by hanging edison lights). There was an aura of magic with the waves crashing and ocean mist. Not wanting only beach photos for formals, Erica and Justin were happy to have portraits that featured the whimsical charm of the village including cobblestone streets, sugarskull murals and a little cove called "Playa Los Muertos" - GingerSnap Photography

SARA NI C HO L AS DECEMBER 29, 2018

REAL WEDDING

Philadelphia

"Philadelphia— hip, urban, ultra modern yet quintessentially colonial— was the backdrop for Sarah and Nick’s spectacular wedding. It was the end of the year, the festive week between Christmas and New Years when spirits are high and every street corner is decked with holly boughs and red ribbon. The ceremony was held at the charming Union Trust with reception to follow at the Lowe’s Hotel, a landmark building in Philadelphia's historic city center. With 200+ guests, extravagant multiple courses, fabulous custom cocktails and decor to simply die for, it was a wedding to end the year on a delicious, decadent high." - Shirleen Burnett, Photographer

Bon Voyage Bliss BY JESSILYN FORIGO

Destination weddings are the stuff fantasies are made of – but planning a far-away soiree comes with its own suitcase full of unique challenges. Not to worry! Say BON VOYAGE to your destination wedding worries with these quick tips

B

V

isit in advance - We know wedding expenses are eating into your

travel fund already, but when it comes to ease of planning, nothing beats getting your feet on the pavement (or in the sand) and seeing the venue (and vendors!) in person if at all possible.

O

pen your mind - Consider embracing local taste, tradition and

textures in everything from your décor to your first dance. Why try to recreate the same wedding vision you’d have had at home?

Y

awning is not a great look in wedding photos - Plan your trip so

udget carefully - Destination wedding packages often seem all-

you arrive at least a couple of days before the big celebration, not

inclusive, but ensure you understand early what’s really included and

only to get last-minute details organized, but also to get some much

what might qualify as an upgrade. Attention is equally important in

needed shut-eye to stave off the dreaded jetlag.

destinations where you’re sourcing services a la carte – make sure you

A

understand local expectations around gratuities and extra fees.

O

ver communicate with guests - You’re taking your nearest and

dearest on a wedding wild-ride so you’ll need to assure them they’re in for the adventure of a lifetime. Not to mention they’ll need plenty of time to plan for time away, so send invites and itineraries early.

N

ever check your dress - Seriously. Just trust us on this one. It’s

not unheard of for luggage to get lost or damaged and this isn’t an item that’s easily replaced or repaired – especially when you’re across the globe from your seamstress.

ccommodations are important – Just because you love the view

from a certain spot, doesn’t mean the associated accommodations are just as exceptional. Choose your destination accommodations with guest comfort in mind.

G

uests are likely taking precious vacation time to celebrate with

you, and while your wedding is the centerpiece of this sojourn, it’s only right to. Leave room in the itinerary for individual excursions.

E

xpert wedding professionals are always a worthwhile investment

when it comes to quashing wedding day worries but this is even truer when you’re planning the biggest event of your life remotely. Consider hiring a planner so the only sweating you’ll do is laying poolside.
