The Waltti travel card system, with which the newly ordered
championships card is compatible, is currently in use in 13 cities in Finland and in three countryside regions. During November 2016, the Waltti travel card was used for 4,3 million trips nationwide. The Waltti travel card system is planned to be rollout out across Finland as a whole by 2018. “We needed a new ticket product for the LAHTI2017 FIS NORDIC WORLD SKI CHAMPIONSHIPS, to be used by tourists, as a day pass, and enabling travel for our accredited suppliers and volunteer staff during the event. We have not previously had a tourist ticket in the LSL public transport system. This new smart ticket will be sold over four zones for 1 to 7 days validity. The disposable 1 day ticket will be used in the future also for individual compulsory school pupils and for group travels.” Mr. Venesjärvi tells about the new smart mobility implementation. The city of Lahti prepares welcoming tourists and trusts partner co-operation The LAHTI2017 FIS NORDIC WORLD SKI CHAMPIONSHIPS affect the local public transport with an estimated increase of 8’000 daily trips by the competition staff members. On top of this, the city officials estimate extra traffic following the arrival of national and foreign tourists and of course there will be increased traffic from the local citizens and nearby county inhabitants due to the event. LSL has prepared to add more transportation capacity during the event, especially towards
the competition ending times. “We will follow up the traffic situation with our operators and prepare to take action, launching extra transportation capacity, as needed. The co-operation with Confidex has also been excellent. The company has delivered flexibly according to our hopes and needs. We warmly recommend Confidex and its products and services for anyone in need of smart ticketing solutions.” Mr. Venesjärvi concludes. Mr. Petteri Lavikko, Director of Product Management at Confidex Smart Mobility, comments: “We are delighted to work together with LSL and participate in making the Championships a success. What kind of city is Lahti, the centre of 2017 Nordic World Ski Championship? And about LSL, Lahden Seudun Liikenne, the city’s public transport committee Lahti is a city of almost 120,000 residents and the centre for a region of 200,000 people. It has the best of both worlds: the attractiveness, intimate coziness and originality of a small town, yet the services, efficiency and logistics of a major city. As Lahti is
the dream city for active, sport loving people, hiking trails, ski tracks and biking routes begin from the very city centre. Lahti’s newly build travel centre, Matkakeskus, operates as a hub of public transportation, providing easy access for transferring between different transportation methods. In the centre of Lahti lies a marketplace and a sports centre, both easily accessible by foot. In Lahti, the whole public transport circles around the central marketplace – this is also where the LAHTI2017 NORDIC WORLD SKI CHAMPIONSHIP grand and festive distribution of prizes takes place after the competition. ■ For more information about the Lahti 2017 Championships, visit http://www.lahti2017.fi/en

Confidex Smart Mobility solutions improve public services and quality of life in Glasgow In Glasgow, UK, Confidex was selected by Strathclyde Partnership for Transport (SPT) to supply a high volume of contactless ITSO smart tickets. The tickets include a Park and Ride feature, which helps reduce traffic congestion and encourages people to use public transport. Park and Ride is also used by people travelling for shopping, social, leisure, education and personal business purposes. According to SPT, the majority of Park and Ride users in the Strathclyde area are commuters travelling to work who use Park and Ride regularly (three or more times a week) to avoid traffic congestion, minimise the cost of their journey and avoid parking availability problems at their destination. SPT has promoted and funded the development of Park and Ride facilities throughout the region. Park and Ride complements other transport modes such
What is a Smart City? Information and communications technology (ICT) is a key enabler for cities to address challenges in a ‘smart’ manner. According to European parliament study of “Mapping Smart Cities in the EU”, a Smart City is one with at least one initiative addressing one or more of the following six characteristics: Smart Governance, Smart People, Smart Living, Smart Mobility, Smart Economy and Smart Environment. ICT links and strengthens networks of people, businesses, infrastructures, resources, energy and spaces, as well as providing intelligent organisational and governance tools.
as rail, bus and Subway and provides an additional option for travel to many areas. The successful Park and Ride strategy by SPT will encourage greater use of public transport by converting car-only journeys to Park and Ride journeys, will encourage users to access their closest Park and Ride facility and will complement active travel strategies. Since 2008, SPT has invested c. £12 million in developing and expanding Park and Ride across the region including key projects at Croy, Kilwinning, Carluke, Bellshill, Irvine
and Johnstone rail stations. More than 3500 new Park and Ride spaces have been delivered over this time period across more than two dozen sites in the SPT area, helping to contribute to rail patronage increases since 2008. Over the next three years, SPT seeks to invest in additional Park and Ride spaces at many more locations including Kilmaurs, Barrhead, Helensburgh, Airdrie, East Kilbride and Carstairs; and to support development and design works for potential projects at other locations in the future, including a strategic Park and Ride site in conjunction with proposals for Robroyston station. SPT will also continue to undertake Park and Ride user surveys to monitor performance and inform transport planning activities. Source: http://www.spt.co.uk/corporate/ about/projects/park-ride/
