Congregation P’nai Tikvah will worship on Shabbat, February 7th & 21st at Kraft-Sussman Chapel, in the Bank of Nevada Business Park at 3975 S. Durango, Suite 104, in Las Vegas. Kabbalat Shabbat and Maariv services will begin at 7:30 PM. Torah Study will take place at 10:00 AM on February 8th at Rabbi Mintz’s home. A bagels and lox brunch is served. Message from the Rabbi
Dear Chevreh, Several weeks ago, I attended the annual OHALAH Conference in Broomfield, Colorado. Like Brigadoon, once a year, for less than a week, a most remarkable gathering of about 200 Rabbis, Cantors, Rabbinic Pastors, and students of those callings, magically are drawn to this location for an experience unlike any other. The davennen (praying) was so sweet, the learning so deep, and the friendships so meaningful… OHALAH is the professional organization of Rabbis and Cantors for Jewish Renewal. As many of you know, I was President of the organization from 2008 to 2012; but this year I attended as a member---no administrative responsibilities, with minimum being in charge…and it was glorious! I arrived Thursday and spent the evening with a niece who had recently moved to Boulder with her 10-year-old daughter…what a lovely visit it was for both of us. And, for me, the 5 day experience began the next day, with a day of continuing education in Hasphaah/Spiritual Direction: A session on grief and mourning and a session on Guided Imagery. A short time to prepare for Shabbat and then, magic: a Shabbaton that set the tone for the weekend. The services were presented by ALEPH students and were varied and innovative, while still following the traditional matbeah (outline). The beauty of the services was enhanced by the fact that those in attendance all understood the liturgy and davvened and sang with heart (and great harmony). It was sublime, from Friday night through Havdallah. The evening was capped off with the Smicha(ordination) of the newest cohort of ALEPH Mashpiim (Spiritual Directors). Meaningful and lovely. Sunday morning was spent renewing friendships with colleagues and getting to know newbies, and then we all shared in the joy of attending the Smicha (ordination) ceremony of one Rabbinic Pastor, two Cantors, and six Rabbis. Beautiful and inspiring. And then the Conference officially began. The following three days (and nights) were a series of programs, plenaries, workshops, and panels, all focusing on the Conference’s theme “HeAtid” (the future). The keynote speaker was Rabbi Sid Schwarz, author of the must-read book, Megatrends. I listened to his assessment of the current scene in Jewish life and his thoughts for the changing paradigm. He spoke of building intentional Jewish communities and I took mental notes on how it applies to our sweet little congregation. 2

How can we live lives of sacred purpose, wholeheartedly engage in social justice, and truly become a home for spiritual seekers? (In the months to come, I’d like to explore these goals with you all, listening and sharing our mutual vision for what we can become.) The variety of workshops I attended included Judaism and the internet, integral Halacha, weaving the generations, Jewish models for gerei toshav/those choosing to live Jewishly and other fellow travelers, stumbling blocks on the path of ethical development, and how we can remain in relationship with those we love and share our differences around Israel. There were even sessions available during mealtime, as we had invited the heads of four rabbinic seminaries to attend and address us, and, then, on Tuesday, I facilitated a panel discussion with all four as they presented how they feel their seminaries are preparing Jewish clergy for the future. The panel included Rabbi Marcia Prager (ALEPH - Renewal), Rabbi Asher Lopatin (Yeshivat Chov’vei Torah – Modern Orthodox), Dr. Tamar Frankiel (Academy for Jewish Religion, CA – Transdenominational [and, yes, my alma mater]) and Rabbi Shirley Idelson (HUC-JIR, NY – Reform). This may have been the first time a professional rabbinic and cantorial association had four different movements’ seminary leaders participating in the same place at the same time----perhaps, ever! And I’m sure it won’t be the last! The late night singing around the fireplace was above and beyond. So spirited. Such fun! The variety of prayer services made each Shacharit, Minchah, and Maariv unique and inspirational. But the sweetest time of all was the closing Shiur –Divine Sparks from our Zaide, a forwardlooking address from 89-year-old Rabbi Zalman Schachter-Shalomi. Reb Zalman, the founder of Renewal Judaism, is now on oxygen, and has fought several major health challenges, but he continues to teach us by example, as he prepares us for the future. I am grateful to Lynn Pisetzner, our own Lynn, who does such a remarkable job as the CPT bookkeeper and who is also the outstanding bookkeeper for OHALAH. We traveled there together and Lynn handled the registration desk with the Administrative Assistant from the outgoing President. We both acutely missed the presence of Doris Turrentine, our beloved Doris, as did all who had been greeted by her radiant smile for the past 5 OHALAH Conferences. I left a journal at the registration desk and it was filled with blessings from the attendees and even from the hotel staff of the OMNI Interlocken Hotel, as they, too, missed Doris. And I am grateful to you all, members of Congregation P’nai Tikvah, who understood how important it is for all of us that I continue to learn who join me in this holy venture of being and becoming! Cantor’s Notes
A Note From the Cantor In the Liturgy class of my first year of cantorial school our teacher, Rabbi Shaul Feinberg, had a daily mantra, “The Rabbis knew their Bible”. He was speaking about the creation of our siddur, our prayer book, and how it started with several passages from the Torah. The Shema, for instance, comes from Deuteronomy 6:4. In one of the portions this month, Ki Tissa, a popular prayer is read. In chapter 31 verses 16 and 17, we find the words, “Thus shall the Children of Israel keep the Shabbat, observing Shabbat throughout the ages as a covenant of all time. It is a sign for all time between me and the Children of Israel. For in six days God made heaven and earth, and on the seventh day God ceased from work and was refreshed.” Deut. 31:16-17. The words of V’Shamru. Each week we sing about this covenant, and we can use many melodies to do so. Even though it is thought to be a ‘traditional’ version by many people, one very popular melody is by Rabbi Moshe Rothblum. It is the one we sing in most of our services. He composed this melody in 1967 as part of a play he put on in rabbinical school. A humble man (although he did do a guest spot on the TV show “CSI:New York,” as a rabbi) he loves to perform, and probably finds the popularity of his composition amazing, especially as it was written to be sung slowly not the dancing style most congregations sing it with now. He loves music and theater, and despite retiring from his pulpit last year, continues to enjoy performing in all forms. With so many variations possible it is sometimes amusing to me to talk to people about which one to sing on a given Shabbat. Some composers have written more than one version. I recently had a discussion with a colleague from my DLTI (Davennen Leadership Training Institute) group, on which V’shamru to use for our Shabbat service this month. She suggested the Debbie Friedman version. I asked, “Which one?” She said, “The Debbie Friedman one,” (I kind of got the feeling of going into “Who’s on First?”). I told her there was more than one melody she wrote for it. We did decide on which version to do. So whether we sing V’shamru upbeat, or lyrically, or just read the prayer, we remember that keeping Shabbat is one of the most important things we can do as Children of Israel. It is our covenant, our promise. It is our time to be like God, and cease from work and be refreshed. L’Shalom, Cantor Marla Goldberg 4
Message from the President: Dear Friends: Our production, “Grandma Sadie’s Getting Married… Again???” is over. We had a wonderful night of laughter, dancing, dining and just fantastic entertainment from our wonderful cast! The amount of time and energy needed to put on this production was tremendous. There were many players who volunteered innumerable hours of their time. From the smallest of details to the grand scheme of the writing and the production of our show, every volunteer helped to make this show a wonderful event. To our writers, Marnie Winston- Macauley and Larry Bernstein, mazel tov on creating a very funny script. To our director Charmin Dahl, a shout-out for a job extremely well done. Our Grandma Sadie commander-in-chief, Larry Bernstein, is to be commended for all that he has done for CPT. His heart and soul to make this production, a successful fund-raiser, were so very much evident. We are grateful to Larry and to our co-producer, Annie Goodrich, for all the myriad things they had to do to make this a go. From running around buying props, to attending multiple meetings, to negotiating contracts, to working with the actors, and to sending multiple emails to me, Larry and Annie’s coordination of all the pieces made this a very successful production. The fabulous graphic (and writing) skills of Anjuli Adler-Swanberg were evident in the fabulous Playbook and Sin-City Shmoozer! The coordination of the silent auction by Nancey Eason and her crew, Dave Clark, Jerry Shapiro, Annie Goodrich, Jenna Dosch, Rudy Ortega, and Sandra Ziemba was above and beyond, and a tip of the kippah to Aaron Shopnick for the use of his truck and for his schlepping, as well. Thanks, too, to Lynn and David Pisetzner who manned the tickets and raffle desk, along with Dale Gardner (who also rearranged seating at the last minute). To our cast members, the apple-of-our-eye Hannah Apple, karaoke-king Jon Axelrod, indomitable Carol Bernstein, buffylicious Evelyn Benitez, simply Schmuely Rick Bindhamer, the Crump-deresistance, Jerry Cline, amiable Amy Seddon Ebert, a star-is-born Joey Goodrich, don’t call me Miriam, Melanie Hope, the scene stealing (as well as silverware stealing) Patsy Kart, the convincingly frume Freima, Jane Kusel, the hilarious Sam Marber, the glamorous-granny-super-pro Hariet Miller, and the convincingly guilty James Munoz----a giant BRAVO! What an ensemble performance!! As you know, many hours were spent raising funds, from our wedding book advertisers to our sponsors and to the auction donations. We thank all of the companies and all of the individuals who contributed. These were not easy tasks, especially in light of our still soft economy, and asking for funds and donations was a thankless task, but we thank you, nevertheless, for making those calls, getting those ads, soliciting for items, and persisting. A special tip of the hat to Jerry Shapiro, Jackie Ackerman, Annie Goodrich, and Dave Clark for doing so much of the work, making what Rabbi Mintz and I did so much easier. Roz Tessler, Tiffany Freud, Kristen Jaeger, and Dotti Elgart did a great job on the follow-up phone calls, and Nancey Eason put in soooo much effort on the office side of this production. I would be remiss if I did not thank the members and non-members who supported our show by purchasing tickets for themselves and friends. The funds that we raised from the raffles and ticket sales will help our Shul in funding our many services to our community. I hope I haven’t forgotten anyone; if so, please forgive me. We thank each and every volunteer for his or her tireless efforts in sustaining CPT!!!! Our B’nei Simchat Chochmah cohort have spent 18 months preparing for the upcoming service, Friday and Saturday February 21st and 22nd. Don’t miss it! Purim and Passover are just a few months away. Women’s Rosh Chodesh Group Our get-together to greet Sh’vat was focused on “The Threads That Bind” and became a quilting bee facilitated by our Queen Bee, Dotti Elgart, when we met early in January. We created prayer patches and Dotti then put them together in a beautiful quilt, which was dedicated to and later delivered to Doris Turrentine. Making this quilt was a labor of love and with it went our prayers for peace and healing for Doris.
Mitzvah Envelopes: Mitzvah envelopes are given out at services with the hope that they will be filled out and returned with a donation for the congregation. Honoring or remembering loved ones, giving tzedakah for a MiShebeirach, simply being thankful for meaningful services, and any other reason you can think of helps the congregation’s sustainability and funds future programming.

New Class Offering: INTRODUCTION TO TALMUD Beginning March 3 and continuing for 10 sessions (no class Erev Pesach), Rabbi Mintz will teach a series on Talmud. This series of sessions will cover the following topics: History of the Talmud Social and Cultural Context Layout of a Page of Talmud Style of the Mishnah Style of the Gemara Talmudic Study Tools A Basic Lexicon of Talmudic Terms This is an absolute beginner’s guide to Talmud,. We don’t study Talmud, we “learn” it and generally do so with a “chaver,” a friend. The hum of learning partners fills the halls of learning (Batei Midrash), and the various issues covered in the Talmud are slices of life. The fun of learning Talmud opens our minds to different ways of logic and this introduction will serve as a springboard before we plunge into the Sea of Talmud. Course cost: $100 plus $15 per text. JEWLICIOUS LEARNERS:
In January we learned about Tu B’Shvat and created greeting cards with both illustrations of nature and pitgamim (quotations) from the
TaNaCh. In the month of February, our older students will complete their text and begin learning Hebrew cursive and start a book in Hebrew all about adventures in Israel. Our younger students will continue Likro u-L’Vareich, and we’ll all have fun getting ready for the spring holidays of Purim and Pesach.
