Message from Rabbi Emerita Yocheved Mintz Dear Chevreh: Do We Hear the Shofar Call? We are in the midst of the Chagim, the Yamim HaNoraim… the Days of Awe, and for the preceding month it was as if the Earth itself was sounding the Shofar…”Wake up! Danger!” There were at least four soundings of alarm; did you hear them? The first Shofar call, like the “T’kiyah” blasted “Awake” when we witnessed the demonstration of the resurgence of violent white supremacism and Neo-Nazism and the apparent sympathizing that came shortly thereafter from the presidency itself. As Jews who suffered so from the hands of Nazis or as veterans of World War II who fought so valiantly against Nazism, it seemed incredible that white nationalism would be raising its ugly head here in the “land of the free.” The second Shofar blast, like the “Shevarim” called out three plaintive sobs, Hurricane Harvey that devastated so much of eastern Texas, the floods that killed thousands in Nepal, Bangla Desh, and India, and Hurricane Irma that destroyed Barbuta and caused so much destruction in Florida. Global climate change can no longer be denied and yet the corporate greed of the coal, oil, and unnatural gas moguls is not only condoned, but encouraged. The third Shofar blast, the staccato alarm of the “T’ruah” called out with the missiles and blast of the Hydrogen Bomb being successfully tested by the North Korean government was intensified with the call of “fire and fury” from our government. Scenes of children in South Korea learning to “duck and cover” brought back memories of bomb shelters and nightmares to those of us old enough to remember the cold war. The fourth Shofar blast, a long and sustained “T’ruah G’dolah” came with the cancellation of DACA, threatening deportation of the Dreamers. Those of us who are first or second generation Americans know first-hand how the lives of our parents or grandparents were saved by being accepted in the United States. We also know how many thousands of lives were lost in the Shoah when those desperate souls were turned away, sealing their fate. The recent upsurge in deportation from and the threatening results of the cancellation of DACA show a dangerous move towards infringement of our civil liberties and freedoms. Are there tears on the Statue of Liberty?

continued from page 2 My colleague and long-time activist, Rabbi Arthur Waskow states that the answer to these Shofar calls can bring on Transformation: * We could bring together the different segments of working-class and lower-middle-class Americans of every race and gender and ethnicity in a joyful amalgam, a New New Deal of sharing. * We could affirm our interconnectedness with all of our planet¹s life-forms, and take action to heal and restore a livable climate. * We could move swiftly to carry out the Treaty to abolish all nuclear weapons that was recently adopted by the United Nations, freeing us all from the threat of nuclear holocaust. And we could take legal, political, and economic steps to welcome North Korea into the comity of nations, even though we do not like its government. * We could rework our entire approach to immigration. We could not only welcome into citizenship all migrants in our midst, but with a new ³Marshall Plan² we could revitalize the economies and polities of Mexico and Central America. Then their citizens would not feel flight from poverty, violence, and despair is their only choice. In short, in each dimension of these echoing Shofar-outcries we could respond not with more repression but with Transformative inclusion -- Love.” For so many years the Kol D’mamah Dakka”/the still small voice has been calling us to action; and now we hear the blasts of the Earth’s Shofar sending a torrent, a tempest, a thunderous blasting of warning. Do we hear the Shofar’s call? This month we will experience Yom Kippur, Sukkot, Shmini Atzeret, and Simchat Torah. May our fasts be meaningful, may we realize that life is as fragile as a Sukkah, that we are more than the customs and rituals of our heritage, and that we can heed the lessons of our own Torah. L’Shanah Tovah Teichateimu….May we each be sealed for a good year.

Cantor’s Notes A Note From the Cantor Shalom. I really can’t think of much to say this month. As I am writing this, so far we had wonderful services for Rosh Hashanah, and I am looking forward to very meaningful services for Yom Kippur. But I do have many thanks to give. First to Ellen Royer, who always leads our choir with great feeling and love. And to our choir Kol Tikvah (Voices of Hope) I thank you for your wonderful singing that contributes so much to our High Holiday services. To Austin Royer, you have emerged into a great musician. You and your oboe will be highly missed when you got away to college. To Mr. Bill, we couldn’t do it without you. And of course to Rabbi Mintz and Reb Jamie, thank you for our wonderful partnership that helps me make our music flow for the service. On a totally different subject, I have to give a huge thank you to everyone who was a part of my surprise. It was a wonderfully keep secret, and I was completely floored when I walked into Anise that Sunday. For all who were there, thank you so much. I am still walking on air a little. Being your Cantor here at P’nai Tikvah has always been an honor for me. When I tell my colleagues about my congregation, I always tell how welcoming, and hamishah they are. I have good thoughts for the congregation in the year 5778, and I look forward to praying, laughing and singing with you for many years. I am excited to have some new music to bring in, and any other surprised that might come up. L’shalom and l’shanah Tovah,
