THE CONGRESSIONAL BLACK CAUCUS FOUNDATION’S CENTER FOR POLICY ANALYSIS AND RESEARCH
MAY 12, 2022
SUPPORTED BY
WELCOME In 2020, the CBCF launched the Policy for the People Series to provide critical policy updates on the most pressing issues facing the Black community in the United States in the era of combatting COVID-19. Experts, prominent thought leaders, and members of the Congressional Black Caucus provided insight and analysis in areas including public health, economic mobility, employment, education, and youth. This year, we are continuing the series beginning with a two-part Virtual Health Equity Summit, supported by Novartis, Genentech, Amgen, League of Women Voters, and Signifyhealth. The first session, Black Maternal Health Global to Local, will address access to equitable health resources in maternal health care. We welcome Dr. Rahel Nardos, Meghan McKenzie, Rose Tchwenko, and Pandora Hardtman as panelists for this timely and lively discussion. The second session, Heavy Heart: The Impact of Heart Disease on Black Communities will discuss cardiology in Black patients, methods of reducing that risk, and how to spread awareness about socioeconomic risk factors that increase susceptibility to heart disease. We also welcome Dr. Monica Webb Hooper, Dr. Michelle A. Albert, Dr. Abena A. Osei-Wusu, and Jude Ngang for our panelist discussion. Thank you for supporting the mission of the CBCF and for contributing to these discussions crucial to the well-being of the global Black community. We value your engagement and look forward to your ongoing participation in our Policy for the People series. While low resource countries face barriers that impede access to quality care, developed countries throughout the diaspora also have records of preventable Black maternal mortality and poor Black maternal health. Globally, an estimated 810 women die each day due to complications of pregnancy and childbirth, according to World Health Organization reports. In this panel, thought leaders and medical professionals discuss the cultural and societal contributors to poor Black maternal health in the U.S. and abroad.

According to recent data from the Center for Disease Control (CDC), African Americans ages 18-49 are 2 times as likely to die from heart disease than whites.
