Preface Welcome to the last of the series—LORAYNE: THE CLASSIC COLLECTION, Volume 4. In the Preface of THE CLASSIC COLLECTION, Volume 3, I said—“I’ve done it; that’s it; I don’t want to write any more; I’ve said all I have to, or want to, say; I’m tired.” Well, I’m about three years “tireder” but there’s just a bit more “I want to say.” After that volume was published I kept getting requests for three books that I hadn’t as yet re-written, up-dated, and etc.—my own THE MAGIC BOOK, STAR QUALITY (The Magic of David Regal) and THE CARD CLASSICS OF KEN KRENZEL. So, I thought, “What the heck, let’s do it.” (I guess it was my “completion complex” taking over.) This then is it, my re-writing, revising, correcting, upgrading and up-dating of those three, above-mentioned books. There would have been no way to fit all of the three into one volume but two concepts made it possible. As I did for the first three volumes, I omitted items that I’d stopped using, was no longer that excited about. Also, I originally wrote THE MAGIC BOOK for laymen, the general public. For this re-write, for you, I didn’t include the real beginners’ basics which you, obviously, already know—or you wouldn’t be reading this book. I omitted items that were no longer viable, didn’t “work” anymore. One good example is the drinking straw into raw potato idea that was in the original THE MAGIC BOOK. It worked fine with the paper drinking straws of that time. Then, drinking straws became plastic. It doesn’t work with plastic straws, so leaving that item in the book would be silly. Anyway, what isn’t omitted from these three books—all that remains—is, in my obviously biased opinion, the crème de la crème. (That, of course, was/is my intention, my goal.) And, I’ve written most of this volume in what I call “rapid writing.” For example, instead of “grasp the deck from above with your palm-down right hand” I’d write, “right hand holds deck from above.” Says the same without the “your,” the “the,” the “palm-down,” saving five words. I’ve also, in many cases, used the figure (“3”) instead of the word (“three”) between quotes which is ordinarily wrong, but saved space here. I did it only in places where I knew it wouldn’t be confusing; the same in places where I used “KS” instead of “king of spades.” Most of those who saw my original manuscript thought that all this xv
