MY first professional appearance on the stage was brought about by my happening to overhear a conversation in a hotel near the Crystal Palace concerning the date of the Tichborne trials, and correcting the pair who were arguing. I had made so sure of those dates by previously meeting The Claimant himself after his long sojourn in prison, where he served his two long sentences of seven years apiece, less the remission which he had earned by his good behaviour. I am not going to weary you with dates regarding that remarkable case, nor go into the history of it. But I call it to mind so clearly because on that first tour of Australia I sought out the old solicitor who first urged Arthur Orton to lay claim to the Tichborne title and estates, and so 9
