FOREWORD. Written entirely during my service in the Army and the major part of it whilst under shellfire at Ypres and on the Somme, this book was ready for the press save the sketches, early in 1919. Anticipating almost immediate demobilisation, I determined to post to my home the manuscript that had been such a labour of love to me, with some small magical apparatus that had accompanied me during the campaign. I am still awaiting the arrival of that parcel. Considerably lightened by the possession of an exceptional memory, my task of re-writing is now finished and I confidently offer this " twicetold tale " to my known and unknown friends the World over, feeling that its publication is a duty imposed by the unanimous appreciation of my earlier efforts. To my friends Mr. ALBERT FELLOWS and Mr. F. A. TABB ("Alba") I am more than grateful ; to Mr. FELLOWS for the very clever items he has permitted me to include, and to Mr. TABB for the amount of time he has devoted to the difficult task of illustrating the various tricks.

DECEPTIVE CONCEPTIONS IN MAGIC AJAX. A visiting card, alleged to be protruding from the pocket of a gentleman invited to assist on the platform, serves to introduce him as " M r . Ajax." Having seated himself, he is requested to draw four cards from the pack, make a mental note of them and likewise acquaint the audience of his choice. One of these chances to be a Jack, upon the back of which, for the purpose of identification, is stuck a little white gummed seal about the size of a sixpenny piece. The four cards having been lodged against a little easel with their faces away from the audience, Mr. Ajax is asked if he could pick out the Jack, and he, seeing the little white seal, states his certainty on this matter. Leaving these four cards so disposed, the conjurer introduces a second pack, the cards of which, although corresponding in backs, are quite plain on face sides. Four of these are taken and placed in an envelope, which is entrusted to the tender mercies of Mr. Ajax. When asked to state which of the four cards against easel he deems to be the Jack, Mr. Ajax hopelessly fails, for these, upon being turned around, prove to be the four blank cards each, however, now adorned with a letter which together spell A J A X .
