The Dime and Penny Old tricks are usually good tricks, which explains in some measure why present-day conjurers find that the tricks done a generation ago are still favorites with audiences. The fascinating mechanical coin known as the Dime and Penny Trick was an instantaneous success, both with magicians and with audiences, from the first day of its invention, and it is still one of the best no-skill coin tricks; and, as a matter of fact, with today's new presentations it is probably a better trick now than it was when first offered to the conjuring fraternity. The basic trick is this: a dime and a penny are placed on the palm of a spectator's hand, which is closed over the coins. When the hand is re-opened, the dime has vanished as completely as though it had never existed. Only the penny, which the spectator may examine, remains. Easy of execution, profoundly perplexing to the layman, inexpensive —this is close to being the perfect coin trick. HOW IT IS DONE The secret of this ingenious trick lies in the mechanical nature of the coin. This is comprised of two parts: a shell penny, into which may be fitted, snugly or loosely as may be desired, a feked insert, one side of which is the face of a dime, the opposite side being the tail of a penny. Thus the performer may show a penny and a dime. By slipping the 'dime" into the hollowed penny, the dime is made to disappear and the penny may be shown on both sides—apparently just a penny, which may safely be handed for examination.
