INTRODUCTION. This book is taken from the Edition De Luxe of my book, " Sensational Tales of Mystery Men." I reproduce the matter in a separate volume at the earnest request of a number of magicians whose desire for more and more magical material seems to be insatiable. There was only a. very limited edition of the book from which this material has been taken, and I was assured by many of my magical friends that it was a pity to restrict the publication of this part of the book. So I decided to issue the " Trick Section " of the larger book as a separate volume under the title of " Tricks You Should Know." And a very good title too! The magician who does not know the contents of this volume will soon be behind the times. WILL

T H E NEWEST CHINESE BAT.
THE NEWEST CHINESE BAT. There is no pocket trick more mystifying than the old Chinese bat when it is neatly performed; in this, the latest version of the trick, we have an additional effect and one which all lovers of good pocket tricks will appreciate. The conjurer first exhibits the bat and shows by means of the little twist with which all my readers are familiar, that both sides of the bat are ornamented with two coloured discs—blue and yellow. (The performer holds the handle between his first finger and thumb, and in the act of raising the bat, apparently with the object of showing both sides of it, twists it right round, and therefore the audience really see one side twice over and are convinced that there are coloured discs on both sides of the bat.) The performer then says that he will remove the discs from one side and he apparently slips two away; as he has nothing in his hand when he has done this he has no difficulty in showing that the discs which he removed have vanished ! Now comes the new effect. The performer calls attention to the fact that there are now discs on only one side of the bat and that the blue disc is nearest to the handle. He covers the bat for a second with a hat and
