Foreword

A few magic friends read this manuscript before it went to press. Their collective attitude is that this is a “book for the ages”! Some remarked that it has to be the most valuable book on card magic to appear within at least the last sixty years. Well, that’s nice. I can only hope that you will feel the same way. Of course, I know how strong the material is—I’ve used most of the effects and routines for decades. I wouldn’t have dreamed of giving away, releasing, publishing, much of the material in this book all those years ago. I always tried to keep certain effects, routines, moves, ideas, to myself. I usually managed to do that for a short time, then I’d reluctantly release the item in a book, or for twenty years, in Apocalypse. But certainly not all of them. I managed to keep quite a few out of print. I did perform them for laymen and some of them for magic friends, but I kept them out of my books and out of Apocalypse. I held some back for Apocalypse in case I decided to continue publishing the magazine. I’d also thought, fleetingly, of possibly doing BEST OF FRIENDS, VOLUME III, so I held back some of my stuff thinking I’d include it in that. But when I realized how much material I was keeping on “hold,” and how good that material is, I also realized that it was time to release (most of) it, because there was more than enough for a (large) book and because I’m entering my eighth decade of life—I’m in my seventies! I’m a “depression kid,” so I never got into ruining decks by having spectators sign cards or by performing torn-and-restored card effects. xiii

xiv

Harry Lorayne

Nothing wrong with them, of course; I’m just letting you know that you won’t find any of either in this book. Nor will you find effects utilizing two decks of cards or set-ups that entail cards with different-colored backs, or set-ups with many face-up cards. Same reasoning—my mind doesn’t work that way. When I was young, and you couldn’t stop me from showing you a card trick, I couldn’t afford two decks of cards! Now, I can afford the two decks, but since I work only with borrowed (other peoples’) decks, I don’t have, nor can I take advantage of, that luxury. I have to work strictly and completely spurof-the-moment impromptu. In only one instance will you need a card with a different-colored back, and that routine still ends clean. I ordinarily dislike writing an effect or routine more than once. The enthusiasm I can project, whatever teaching ability I may have, remains at top level for that one, first, writing. This book is somewhat of an exception to that rule. That has not been the case for many of the items herein. I’d written them (or made notes only) years ago. I re-wrote with the same top-level enthusiasm and, hopefully, with the same teaching/writing ability. Mainly, I did it with much more care and attention to detail. I mention this because I’d like you to read carefully. This is not a book to skim. I don’t want you to overlook or miss out on some, in my opinion, important thoughts. Try everything—that’s the only way you’ll see the value. And you’ll discover gems among the good-to-great stuff. Every item is a “session” item. You’ll want to discuss and work with each and every one of them with your magician friends! Credit is given where I know it’s due. If I don’t know the exact source, I do mention the fact that the idea or concept is not new, it’s been around. I apologize, of course, for any credit omissions; it is or they are unintentional. I do occasionally mention other books of mine and effects or sleights therein, but please understand that every effect and routine in this book is complete unto itself. I had to make choices—which sleights do I only refer to, which do I re-teach. I re-taught when necessary. I do think you’ll agree with my choices. Also, be aware that I sometimes repeat an illustration—on purpose. There are moments when I don’t want you flipping through pages to find that specific illustration. I don’t want your attention wavering at that moment. (You should be aware of the

xv

fact that many of the items without illustrations are blockbusters, if not “reputation makers.”) I also occasionally repeat short instructions—for the same reason. I mention this here and in the text once or twice just to make sure you don’t think I’m “losing it.” I also mention certain ideas with which I’m “enamored” more than once. For example, my Reverse Faro Ending (which you’ll learn and do in about one minute) has become one of my favorite things. I suggest it as an ending perhaps a half dozen times for a half dozen different effects. Please understand that there are always other excellent ways to end those effects. I simply want to make you aware that that ending does fit at those areas—then, up to you. I’ve been taken to task, only a few times, over the fact that I don’t always describe the effect first, before I go into method, handling, presentation. Well, I’m gonna keep doing it as I’ve been doing it. For a variety of reasons. First of all, had I explicitly described the effect for every item in this book (I do it for some) the book would have been the same length but with probably half the information. And, I’ve written about this before—I don’t always want you to make the decision as to whether to continue reading that particular item at that time. I want you to make that decision after you’ve read the entire thing. Doesn’t that make sense? (Aside from the fact that the ego of this writer wants his writing read!) And, probably most important, many of my routines contain multiple effects. Some of those effects come to me as I write. It would take a separate book to describe all those effects and routines before going into the explanations. To me, a strict “Effect, Method” format is not writing, or really teaching. My ideas, effects, routines, simply do not lend themselves to that format. (I did it when I wrote Tarbell #7 only to hold to the format of the first six volumes.) Also, most often, as I’m reading someone’s lengthy “effect description,” my thinking is— ”For God’s sake, cut to the chase, will you!” From the myriad of mail, calls, comments, I’ve received through the years (since 1962, when CLOSE-UP CARD MAGIC first appeared) I must be doing something right—so I’ll continue to do it my way. Okay? Okay. How many times have I said it, written it—“This is, most likely, my last book on magic”? I know—many times. But I think this is really it. I’m giving it all away here. I have no more to say or to contribute.

xvi

Harry Lorayne

So—I’ve enjoyed writing and putting together this, probably my last book (of my own card material). Hopefully you’ll enjoy reading it, learning from it, performing the effects and routines, almost as much. (I sort of consider this book my “Thank You” to magic!) And now, full circle. The last sentence of the Foreword in my first book on card magic (CLOSE-UP CARD MAGIC, 1962) said what I felt at the time. It’s how I still feel: To those of you who wish to have some minor (and major) card miracles on hand at all times, and to those of you who love card magic almost as much as I do—I dedicate this book. Up Front

Before we get into the really good stuff . . . Since this book is not for beginners my assumption is that you know basic card technique or handling, like double lifts, palms, and so on. But I want to take a moment to talk about two items. That’s because I suggest using those two maneuvers quite a few times throughout the book. I’m talking about the overhand jog shuffle and the center Hindu Shuffle. Standards yes, but I want to eliminate any possible frustration even if it’s for only a fraction of the readers. The Center Hindu Shuffle: This is the easier of the two, of course. It’s just what it says it is. The point of the maneuver is to make it appear as if the entire deck is being shuffled while the bottom group of cards (if the deck is face down) or the top group of cards (if the deck is face up) remains in place. Start a “normal” Hindu Shuffle, but instead of your right hand pulling out the bottom part of the deck, it pulls out the center part of the deck (Figure 1). Continue the shuffle as usual. That’s all there is to that.

-0 The Overhand Jog Shuffle: This is the best way, in my opinion, to shuffle the deck while keeping the top block of cards in place. Start a normal overhand shuffle by undercutting about half the deck with xvii

your right hand. Run the first card (top card of right-hand portion) onto the left-hand half, injogging it. It’s cleaner to start taking that first card flush with the lower half, injogging it with your left thumb as that thumb takes the card. This avoids a too-obvious backward movement of your right hand. Shuffle off onto the left-hand half, but (basically) flush with the “main” left-hand half (Figure 2).

Figure 2

Figure 3

I believe that it’s now, forming the break at the injogged card, that some have a problem. Your right thumbtip pushes up at that injogged card as the right hand grasps the entire deck, forming that break. And in order to have complete control during the rest of the shuffle, the two half decks should surround the upper joint of the right thumb. That is, the top half deck is against the fleshy pad of the thumbtip, above that joint, while the bottom half deck is under that joint (Figure 3). That way, there’s no problem at all holding back the bottom half deck as the top half is shuffled into your left hand—because that bottom half is under complete, separate, control. So, shuffle off up to that break or separation, then throw the bottom half on top. That’s it. (See Overhand-Run Control in Section VII for another way to “handle” an overhand jog shuffle.) Now, get ready, get set—enjoy!
