G a l l e ry H ome 2023 Professional Project Proposal Forest Park, Birmingham, Alabama, USA

Gallery Home is a proposal for a new build house on a small, cleared lot in a diverse historic neighbourhood. It is designed for a retired man who is an avid art collector, traveler, and entertainer. I have proposed a 130 square meter, low maintenance, and age-in-place home. It showcases the best pieces of the clients extensive art collection and features minimal contemporary interiors chosen and arranged to prioritise the art pieces. The clean lines, flowing spaces, and strategic lighting help to create a gallery-like interior space. The organisation of the home allows for easy flow for entertaining while contributing to the ease of accessibility to allow the client to comfortably live here well into his later years. Every main room in the home will feature floor-to-ceiling operable windows to allow for uninterrupted views to the garden. The landscape surrounding the house will feature lush and colorful seasonal plantings interspersed with more robust evergreens to allow for year round life in the garden. A gas fire pit and large patio are easily accessible from the kitchen. A grass lawn separates the larger patio from the smaller one directly off of the primary suite. This patio will feature a small plunge pool and lounge area. 4

Gallery Home is a marriage of art, architecture and landscape that will serve as a peaceful backdrop to the clients treasured art collection for years to come.

The living room features some of the largest pieces in the collection and the windows are positioned to allow them to be seen from outside

This is the view that one first sees when entering Gallery House. The fireplace wall is finished in board formed concrete to complement the grey and teal tones of the selected art

The wall slabs in the den offer the most versatility for art arrangement. This allows the client the freedom to rotate selected pieces in and out as desired

The kitchen functions are limited to one wall and allow plenty of space for easy flow around the dining area and into the den and living room

Campus Park 2023 Masters Thesis Project Architectural Institute in Prague, Prague, CZ The Campus Park project will revitalise a long underused mountainside park in a vibrant neighbourhood in Birmingham, Alabama. The Arlington School, a long standing and well respected small school, will be spearheading the project to move from their current site on the same street. Besides its close proximity, the site was also chosen for its currently inaccessible history. In the mid twentieth century, fossils were exposed during excavations for an expressway through the mountain. At one point there was a popular archeological museum that provided interpretation and access to trails to see the fossils in situ. Campus Park will reopen these trails. While the private school may be the owner of Campus Park, it will only have one permanent, private classroom. The rest of the building and park will be shared by both the school students and community members. The three story structure is partially embedded in the mountainside allowing for multiple levels of accessible park space to encompass the building. The staggered and terraced form mimics the sites slope. Campus Park will operate on three main levels within the community. It will be a home for education, community engagement, and history. It is in highly visible and welcoming location offering great views of the city. It will reintroduce Birmingham to a new way to access its history, forge new connections, and share resources. 10

The tallest interior space contains the main staircase that accesses all levels and is located at the southern end of the library atrium. The western facing windows are shaded with a living screen to help with the afternoon solar heat gain.

The structure is partially submerged into the hillside, allowing for the greenery to seamlessly envelope most flat surfaces. The terraced building form mimics the staggered slope of the hillside and helps it achieve its natural integration into the landscape.

C a lde r A r t Sanct uary 2021 Bachelors Thesis Project Tyler School of Art and Architecture at Temple University, Philadelphia, PA, USA

The Calder Art Sanctuary on the Benjamin Franklin Parkway in Philadelphia is an experiment in presenting an entire families artistic contributions in its optimal light and shadow. The layout of the gallery spaces are inspired by the circulation of naves, chapels and ambulatories used in cathedral design. While the main focus of the museum is the work of Alexander Calder, the family gallery showcases rotating works from the Calder family, situating Alexander Calder within his creative legacy and celebrating the Calder families contributions to the art world. Surrounding the double height family gallery are smaller chapel-inspired spaces, including a round gallery on the main floor and an ambulatory-inspired smallworks gallery. Accessible through an integrated staircase, the first floor loft provides uninterrupted views of the entire gallery. 18 The Calder Art Sanctuary is situated within a large garden that is guarded from the busy surrounding traffic by lush walls of greenery. The garden spaces feature outdoor art installations that are aligned with the buildings windows to optimise and purposfully frame interior and exterior vantage points. In addition to the art focused spaces, there is also an inviting garden cafe and small museum gift shop on the ground floor. Functionally, there are secured loading and storage rooms directly accessible by a service elevator on all floors. These carefully designed spaces and functional layout aim to create an immersive and engaging experience for visitors while providing an appropriately reverent backdrop for the artwork. This helps to showcase the Calder Art Sanctuary as a testament to the Calder families legacy and great contributions to the city of Philadelphia and the larger art world.

The Calder Art Sanctuary galleries are arranged similarly to cathedral sanctuaries. The largest gallery, the double height family gallery, functions as the central, core space, similar to a nave. The other galleries radiate from and respond to the family gallery. The ground floor galleries encircling the family gallery act as ambulatories. The first floor galleries with the three skylights function as chapels. The loft gallery with its open oculus to the entrance hall acts similarly to a choir loft, allowing the sounds from the upper levels to enter the space below. 19
