INVITATION IN NV NV TO ATTEND On b On behalf of the organising committee we invite you to attend Medicines Management 2010, the 36th SHPA National Conference, will be held in Melbourne from 11-14 November 2010. This year’s central theme of ‘Staying Alive’ will showcase innovation and developments in hospital pharmacy practice, with particular focus in the areas of chronic disease management, pain control and infectious diseases. A dedicated technician program will feature speakers from around Australia demonstrating novel approaches and expanding roles of pharmacy technicians. The contributed paper and poster sessions will allow delegates to showcase recent advances and updates in hospital pharmacy practice. The Conference will be held at the recently re-developed Melbourne Convention Exhibition Centre, with state of the art facilities and stunning waterfront views.
The 36th SHPA National Conference
Centrally located, delegates will have convenient access to the city’s hotels, public transport and all of Melbourne’s famous attractions. Delegates are strongly encouraged to use the social program as an opportunity to network and socialise with colleagues. For your convenience all social events will be held at the Convention Centre, culminating with the ever popular gala dinner on Saturday night. We look forward to seeing you in November!

‘STAYING SSTA ST TA T ALIVE’ THEMES BUGS AND DRUGS It is not news that ‘bugs’ are winning the fight! Come and listen to the latest on which bacteria and viruses are re-emerging in Australia or getting out of control. What can pharmacists and prescribers do to try and curb this threat? Update your knowledge on resistance, re-emergence, viruses and more.
LIFE GOES ON Keeping people alive and healthy into older age continues to present new challenges. Come and discuss our role and where these challenges are taking our profession, our health budget and holistic models of care we need to provide.

PAINFUL SITUATIONS Management of pain is a complex issue that needs a multidisciplinary team approach. Find out how pain management varies in different settings.
BROADENING THE PROFESSION In the fast changing health care environment that we work in, important questions arise: Where is our profession going? Where are other pharmacists taking their practice? What’s the evidence? How do we translate evidence into practice? Join in the discussions, challenge your ideas and maybe find a new career path!
1970s TO NOW – CHANGES IN TECHNICIAN TRAINING AND ROLES The technician’s role has changed dramatically throughout the years. Take this journey from past to present and into the future.

HOST CITY MELBOURNE, VICTORIA With regular medal-winning appearances in the Economist’s Most Liveable Cities list (taking the top award three times since 2002), Melbourne has a right to be boastful. But despite its temperate climate, safe streets, cosmopolitan lifestyle and beautiful setting, locals remain low-key about their city. There is no shortage of things to do in Melbourne’s city centre. You can wander through art galleries, tour historic sites along the ‘Golden Mile Heritage Trail’, experience the living Australian Forest and indigenous display at the Melbourne Museum or maybe take a
leisurely cruise along the Yarra River past Southgate, the Docklands and the Melbourne Convention Exhibition Centre. Recognised as the ‘food capital’ of Australia, Melbourne is also renowned for its fabulous shopping. Melbourne attractions include designer stores in the city; the exclusive boutiques of Chapel Street;and bargain-hunting in the buzzing atmosphere of the Queen Victoria Market. And when wandering in the city, peer down almost any laneway and catch a glimpse of the ‘secret Melbourne’ – a place of edgy art, hidden bars and cutting-edge design.
