Crash‌ Boom‌ Bam! The Vietnam War By: Olivia Connor
The longest war the United States ever fought in was the Vietnam War, also known as the Second Indochina War. It started when the French colony of Vietnam declared that they wanted independence from France. Ho Chi Minh, a communist leader, organized a revolt to end the French colonial rule. The US threw huge sums of money at France to end it recuperate its colony. The government backed France in order to prevent the spread of Communism. French control of Vietnam was ended when Vietnam forced France to surrender after a 56 day battle at Dien Bien Phu in 1954.
7
The war began in 1954, when Ho Chi Minh rose to power of Vietnam. Over 3 million people were killed in this dreadful war that lasted for years. Division among Americans was created when opposition of the war grew in the country. In 1973, Nixon ordered the withdrawal of all US troops in Vietnam. In 1975, the war ended when Communist forces seized control of Saigon and the country of Vietnam fell to Communism. 8

During the 60’s, not only women, but men, were all about fashion. They had to have the perfect outfits for all the occasions. Wearing fashionable scarfs, dresses, rights coats, skirts, or headbands, women and teens were ready to go to dinner! Instyle knee-high boots were what all the rage was about and they could be worn for anything! Men’s pants became much tighter. The fit around the thigh was sporty and not at all the relaxed fit that men were accustomed to. The pea coat was quite popular for men in the mid-60s, well, basically anything that looked straight outta London was good to go in the mid-60s! They also used scarfs and sweaters that were tights to their arms.
The retro swimsuits worn in the 60s were all in! There were showy two pieces and a little more conservative, but fashionable, one pieces! All sorts of colors and patterns made women go out to stores to get their own! Men wore shorts halfway down their thighs to impress the ladies.

Our New Leadership and More! Government and Politics By: Ale Giammattei
We have a new president! Our president John F. Kennedy was just assassinated. The vice president, Lyndon B. Johnson, must take over.
Gulf of Tonkin Resolution The president, Lydon B. Johnson uses the Gulf of Tonkin as an excuse to attack on North Vietnam. He says that North Vietnam attacked two American ships. Congress tells Johnson that he is allowed to do whatever is needed to protect Americans. Even though Johnson thinks it is a declaration of war, it is not.
Congress approves the peace corps. On March 1, 1961, John F Kennedy establishes Peace Corps. Kennedy wanted to start a new “army” which would be made up by civilians who would volunteer their time and skills to help underdeveloped nations raise their living standards. At first congress was doubtful about this “army” but finally they approved it and the Peace Corps was established. Not only has Johnson used the Gulf of Tonkin as a declaration but also lied to the Americans. He said that “We are not about to send American boys 9 or 10 thousand miles away from home to do what Asian boys ought to be doing for themselves.” But right after elections he starts the draft and half a million american soldiers are in Vietnam doing the Asian boy’s jobs. 13

Civil Rights Movement… To Subjugate Another is to Subjugate Yourself! By Andrea Santander
Nearly 100 years after the Emancipation
Proclamation, African Americans in Southern states still inhabited a starkly unequal world of segregation and various forms of oppression, including race-inspired violence. Jim Crow laws at the local and state levels caused the African Americans to be separated from the whites in schools, bathrooms, buses, waterfalls, pools, and mostly everything else. In 1954, the U.S. Supreme Court struck down the “separate but equal” doctrine that formed the basis for state-sanctioned discrimination, drawing national and international attention to African Americans’ plight. Martin Luther King Jr., an African American, wanted to change the way that the African Americans were treated and used nonviolent protest and civil disobedience to bring about change, and the federal government made legislative headway with initiatives such as the Voting Rights Act of 1965 and the Civil Rights Act of 1968. The most important achievements of African-American civil rights movements have been the post-Civil War constitutional amendments that abolished slavery and established the citizenship status of blacks and the judicial decisions and legislation based on these amendments, notably the Supreme Court’s Brown v. Board of Education decision of 1954 where Oliver Brown fought alongside a lawyer named Thurgood Marshall to allow schools to be desegregated. the Civil Rights Act of 1964, and the Voting Rights Act of 1965. Moreover, these legal changes greatly affected the lives of African American children, men, and woman.

Civil Rights Movement By Andrea Santander
Rosa Parks was an African AMerican seamstress that was tired after work one day and decided to sit at the front of the bus (the whites section) and when a white man told her to get up and go to the back, she said no and got arrested. This began boycotts by the African Americans to no longer ride buses until they got desegregated. Since 70% of the people that rode buses were African Americans, bus companies were losing a lot of money and so buses became desegregated. Did you know? The 1955-56 Montgomery Bus Boycott, a protest against segregated public facilities in Alabama, was led by Martin Luther King Jr. and lasted for 381 days.
