Contents

I’m an architecture graduate from Liverpool John Moores University. I have always been passionate about the design process and the magic that good design can bring to our lives. My main ambition is to strive for buildings that perform their functional needs, and also carry a soulfulness and materiality that creates significant moments and memories in people’s lives.

The Birkenhead School of Art

How do you create a radical art school in the Birkenhead conservation area?

How do you create a framework for people to discover themselves, a place that allows people to learn through play. The Birkenhead School of Art provides that framework for play, through highly flexible spaces and studios which aid the students to be almost limitless in their work and ideas. The form of the school is generated from the conservation area it is situated in. Two streets are cut through the school, derived from the geometry of Hamilton Square and the other is created from John Street which is adjacent to the site.

Observation Pavilions

How do you express the elements of the weather through space?

How do you express the weather’s elemental qualities in separate spaces? Four pavilions designed for land, wind, rain and light.

The Observation pavilions are situated in Hebden Bridge, West Yorkshire. The site was once a quarry and has a diverse range of plants and vegetation, along with a clear view of the town.

Contemplation Space

Can a pier create an intimate space for reconnection and contemplation? This space acts as an amplifier of the sound, smell and view of the water below. People begin to notice and appreciate things when they are taken away from them; this pavilion aims to improve the human experience of a threshold.

45

Year: 2019 . Location: Liverpool . Building: Pavilion . Type: Academic

46

How can you amplify contemplation ? The contemplation pavilion is situated on the Otterspool Promenade; the main concept is simple, a space for people to be present and feel the true effect of being by water, creating a threshold between the water’s edge and the lands edge. The pavilion has a distinct materiality that references the roughness and ageing process of the sea. Corten steel is used to reflect the rust of the past railings, whilst timber speaks the same material language of traditional piers.

North West Screen Print Archive

Can you treat a building like an artefact ?

How do you design a building to house screen prints from artists all over the North West of England? After a large body of research into how screen printing studios work and archive precedent studies, I wondered why archives are incredibly private when they hold such precious things within; would there be a way to treat the building like an artefact is treated, to house the spaces needed in a clear display cabinet.

By organising the program in a stacking formation and covering it with a glazed box, the buildings’ spaces almost act as an artefact in their own right, with the glazing serving as the display cabinet.

The Livingroom How do you give Liverpool an urban space with the feeling of a Living room?

This project is a continuation from a group urban design project. The site is situated on the North East side of the Fabric District in Liverpool. This project is an exploration into what urban design could be, pushing what the definition of urban design can become.
