GENE DOBBS BRADFORD EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR OF THE SAVANNAH MUSIC FESTIVAL By Alex Arango

alex@connectsavannah.com

In January of this year, the Savannah Music Festival (SMF) announced Gene Dobbs Bradford would take the reins as its new Executive Director. Prior to taking his current position, Bradford was president and CEO of Jazz St. Louis for 23 years.

Bradford arrived in Savannah in late February, and is thrilled to call Savannah his new home along with finally being able to see the SMF live and in person. “It’ll be the first time that I’ve had a chance to do that. I’ve always wanted to come down to visit the music festival, and unfortunately it came at a time that was really busy in St. Louis,” said Bradford. “One thing that I’ve always known about the festival is that it has a really high level of artistic quality, and I think that this year’s lineup is no exception.”

“I think for the next month or so it’s really going to be about learning the community first. I want to make sure that I have an understanding of the dynamics before we really start thinking about what changes we might want to make. Because we want to make sure that it’s going to be something that will impact the community in a meaningful way, and not just be something foisted upon them,” explained Bradford.

festival more appealing to a younger audience. Bradford says he understands the importance of music as an educational tool. In St. Louis, Bradford spearheaded educational programs that reached out to over 200,000 students. For SMF, community engagement and education are core tenants, and those coincide with Bradford’s mission to serve students. For example, created in conjunction with Carnegie Hall, SMF’s Musical Explorers program brings kindergarten through second grade students in from the Savannah Public School System, allowing them to discover different types of music.

Bringing more diversity to the festival and reaching audiences that may not feel a connection to the current festival lineup is a goal of Bradford’s.

“Kids are exposed to everything from classical to jazz, blues, bluegrass and world music so it’s very exciting to see,” said Bradford.

“The program that we have currently is very high quality, but I think one of the things we want to do is have an eye towards attracting other audiences that we’re not currently getting,” said Bradford.

With the festival finally returning to conventional in-person programming, Bradford is looking to maintain the high quality of entertainment, while continuing to bring people together through their shared love of music.

Bradford made it clear that programming intent on bringing people back every year will not be phased out. With SMF being a cross-genre festival, Bradford hopes to expand on what is already offered while also making the

“I don’t think anything brings people together like music does. It’s one of the most powerful art forms that we have,” said Bradford.

CONNECT SAVANNAH | MARCH 23-29, 2022

With Bradford at the helm, Jazz St. Louis went from $300,000 dollar budget to $3 million. He also launched a successful capital campaign in 2012 that raised $8.5 million to expand facilities and community engagement programs.

In addition to welcoming people back to live music, Bradford also discussed his plans for the festival’s future. For him, that starts with getting to know the community, and then building upon the festival’s foundation that spans 23 years.

What is it that they say about necessity being the mother of invention? It’s a pretty simple concept: find a void in the marketplace and attempt to fill it. If you were right and execute properly, then you are rewarded. It’s business 101. Tonya Rintye and her husband Nick are counting on being right. To this point, they have been. They are owners of the very popular Hipster Hound Pet Boarding and Groomers in Savannah. With 2 locations, they have successfully carved out a niche. Now they are taking huge step in a different direction. On to Broughton St. Right in the heart of downtown Savannah. And going after the tourist market. The space is called “Locally Made Savannah.” It’s being created as a ‘one stop shop’ to buy anything (well, almost

anything) that is made in and around Savannah: clothing, mugs and cups, souvenirs and obviously a few things that are edible. “We used to make the rounds at the farmers markets selling our dog treats.” Tonya says. “We regularly saw how many artisans there are in this area that were making quality items.” Then one day on a stroll downtown, Tonya and Nick realized that there was not one spot downtown where you could go to see everything made in the area for purchase. Of course you can buy this or that here or there, but one spot that carried ONLY local items didn’t exist. The wheels began to spin. The couple began to give the idea serious thought. Then came the 2020 shutdown. The idea went on the shelf. Now it is not only back, but open to the

public in the 200 block of West Broughton St. near Jefferson. They opened March 16 to a steady flurry of customers. Tonya tells me putting this together was easier than you would think because they already knew what merchandise was out there because of their time invested on the market circuit. “We got to know everyone” she says. “We went from thinking our space was too big and we wouldn’t have enough merchandise to fill it to now telling each other we need more space.” She estimates they are working with about 150 different local artisans, with more calling on them every day. Certainly a good problem to have. My reason for wanting to share this story is obviously food related. Yes, there are a number of locally made products that you can buy there. There are cheese straws, local salsas and jams and other jarred goods. You can also find Savannah Square Pops, Hunter Cattle’s assortment of jerkys and much more. The back of the room, though, will be dominated by a soda and milkshake bar. I got a peek earlier this week at their operation. There will be a good amount of variety, but I suspect their “Monster Milk Shakes” will be very popular. You know the ones, complete with goodie coated cups and assorted monstrosities coming out of the top? The most popular spot to offer these shakes a few years back was on Wilmington Island.

They closed during the shutdown and never returned. I tried two of them at Locally Made Savannah. They were delicious. As rich as you would think. Sugar intake for the week? Secured. It’s not all milkshakes though. They are going to offer a treat made with a Savannah Square Pop and local sweet tea. “We are planning an iced tea and lemonade bar as well.” she says. Later this week, they will begin selling baked goods from Auspicious Baking Company, Two Smart Cookies and Savannah Rum Runners Bakery. There will clearly be something for everyone. The milkshakes? Those are the eye candy they are hoping will draw some kids in, parents in tow. Boom, built in audience. Business has been good since they opened. But business is good for everyone during St Patrick’s Day weekend around here. Still, Tonya and Nick are counting on locals looking for that one stop shop to purchase gifts for out of towners. They’ve had several already. Word of mouth has been making the rounds. I think the idea is solid. The shop is a nice fit for West end of Broughton St. Down the other way you’ve obviously got Leopold’s Ice Cream as well as Ben and Jerry’s but nothing up their way. Nick and Tonya realized that. They are now planning to be in the right place at the right time.

Keitaro Harada, conductor for the Savannah Philharmonic, received the Hideo Saito Memorial Fund Award last month in his native Japan. This award is presented each year to two promising young musicians – one a conductor, as in Harada’s case, and one a cellist. In addition to international recognition, the award includes a plaque and a significant financial prize of about $50,000. The Sony Music Foundation established the Hideo Saito Memorial Award in 2002 to honor the late Saito, a renowned cellist, conductor and educator. “We are so excited to see Keitaro receive this award, further proof of the international quality of musical talent the Savannah Philharmonic brings to our mission of building community through music,” said Dr. Amy Williams, SavPhil’s executive director. The committee said it selected Keitaro because of his vast musical knowledge and training gained from living abroad and training under wonderful mentors. It cited the courage he shows as music and artistic director of the Savannah Philharmonic and how he has improved the importance of music in the Savannah region. Harada is now in his third year with the Savannah Philharmonic. Previously, he completed his fourth and final season as Associate Conductor of the Cincinnati Symphony and Pops. He has performed extensively in Asia, Europe and North America.

WHAT ARE WE READING? PRESENTED AND CURATED WEEKLY BY E. SHAVER, BOOKSELLER DAWN

BY OCTAVIA BUTLER Lilith Iyapo has just lost her husband and son when atomic fire consumes Earth—the last stage of the planet’s final war. Hundreds of years later Lilith awakes, deep in the hold of a massive alien spacecraft piloted by the Oankali—who arrived just in time to save humanity from extinction. They have kept Lilith and other survivors asleep for centuries, as they learned whatever they could about Earth. Now it is time for Lilith to lead them back to her home world, but life among the Oankali on the newly resettled planet will be nothing like it was before. The Oankali survive by genetically merging with primitive civilizations—whether their new hosts like it or not. For the first time since the nuclear holocaust, Earth will be inhabited. Grass will grow, animals will run, and people will learn to survive the planet’s untamed wilderness. But their children will not be human. Not exactly.

ROSE CODE BY KATE QUINN

1940. As England prepares to fight the Nazis, three very different women answer the call to mysterious country estate Bletchley Park, where the best minds in Britain train to break German military codes. Vivacious debutante Osla is the girl who has everything—beauty, wealth, and the dashing Prince Philip of Greece sending her roses—but she burns to prove herself as more than a society girl, and puts her fluent German to use as a translator of decoded enemy secrets. 1947. As the royal wedding of Princess Elizabeth and Prince Philip whips post-war Britain into a fever, three friends-turned-enemies are reunited by a mysterious encrypted letter--the key to which lies buried in the long-ago betrayal that destroyed their friendship and left one of them confined to an asylum. A mysterious traitor has emerged from the shadows of their Bletchley Park past.

The Alexandrian Society, caretakers of lost knowledge from the greatest civilizations of antiquity, are the foremost secret society of magical academicians in the world. Those who earn a place among the Alexandrians will secure a life of wealth, power, and prestige beyond their wildest dreams, and each decade, only the six most uniquely talented magicians are selected to be considered for initiation.

When the candidates are recruited by the mysterious Atlas Blakely, they are told they will have one year to qualify for initiation, during which time they will be permitted preliminary access to the Society’s archives and judged based on their contributions to various subjects of impossibility: time and space, luck and thought, life and death. Five, they are told, will be initiated. One will be eliminated. The six potential initiates will fight to survive the next year of their lives, and if they can prove themselves to be the best among their rivals, most of them will.

A romper is a great go-to to have in your closet when it gets warm out. It’s one piece, there’s minimum styling involved, and it’s probably going to be made out of a lightweight material. Don’t be intimidated by a bold printed romper like this wavy, green one. Style it with a pair of white sneakers or white cowboy boots, then complete the look with a bandana and a ponytail. Bandanas can also be tied around the wrist and worn as a bracelet, like this purple one.

WORLD REKNOWNED SAVANNAH MUSIC FESTIVAL RETURNS PHILIP DUKES TALKS SAVANNAH MUSIC FESTIVAL + FOUR-PART CHAMBER SERIES

CONNECT SAVANNAH | MARCH 23-29, 2022

“What we didn’t have back in the early days is this core of patrons and audience members that return to the festival every year. I think even COVID couldn’t break that sort of spirit.”

18

Philip Dukes, associate artistic director for the Savannah Music Festival (SMF) and world renowned viola player, will be bringing a four-part chamber series to this year’s Savannah Music Festival. The first four programs are set for March 27, 29 and 31, with the final performance being on April 1. The first and last two programs will be held at Trinity United Methodist Church, and the second at the Kehoe Iron Works at Trustees’ Garden. While based in England, Dukes was happy to talk about his involvement with this year’s SMF, and getting audiences back in-person.

CURRENTLY YOU ARE AN ASSOCIATE ARTISTIC DIRECTOR FOR SMF, BUT YOU’VE BEEN PERFORMING IN THE FESTIVAL SINCE 2004. HOW WOULD YOU SAY SMF HAS GROWN OVER THE YEARS? It’s incredible to see where we are now, from where we were in 2004 on all fronts. SMF is on the map as being one of the big, established, and great festivals on the musical calendar. It’s so uplifting and exciting. What we didn’t have back in the early days is this core of patrons and audience members that return to the festival every year. I think even COVID couldn’t break that sort of spirit.

WHEN WAS THE LAST TIME YOU WERE IN SAVANNAH, AND HOW ARE YOU FEELING NOW THAT SMF IS BACK TO A CONVENTIONAL PROGRAM AFTER THESE LAST TWO YEARS? I was back in Savannah in the fall playing concertos with the Savannah Philharmonic and two concerts with the Escher quartet as part of the concerts we had in fall. I feel as I’ve had some connection with everyone, more recently than most, but I think everyone’s looking forward to being back together with the established artists that we’ve had for so many years, and then also the wonderful new artists that are joining the classical concerts this year.

WHAT’S AN ASPECT OF THE FESTIVAL THAT YOU FIND UNIQUE OR SPECIAL COMPARED TO OTHER INTERNATIONAL, CROSS-GENRE FESTIVALS? I can’t pinpoint one because there are so many! I think the city of Savannah is a really enticing place to come to visit and to soak up the ambience of the community, the history, the architecture, the beautiful squares and laidback attitude.

HOW DID THE FESTIVAL ADAPT TO THE PANDEMIC? That’s quite an interesting point. I think the continuity, in terms of a series or a festival, is really important. Once you break that continuity, if you’re not careful you can lose the thread. So, there was a lot of amazing work done by the festival to make sure that through a variety of different mechanisms, whether they were a concert online, live streaming, or a return to some live concerts, once it was safer to do so. Those types of things were so important in order to kind of keep the pot boiling until the actual festival resumed.

WHAT CAN YOU TELL US ABOUT THE FOUR-PART CHAMBER SERIES YOU’RE BRINGING TO THE FESTIVAL? Well, the first thing is that in conceiving any series of chamber music, you’ve got an Aladdin’s cave of repertoire to choose from. You need to think about a number of different things when you’re conceiving or constructing programs. It needs to be, obviously, user-friendly and attractive to your audience. You need to know your audience, there’s no point in putting on a whole concert of Karlheinz Stockhausen because nobody’s going to come. I know the audience of Savannah, and I run this similar concert series here in England. That’s not to say I’m just going to exclusively put a program together just because I know what they like. There’s a little bit of spice I throw in here and there.

I CAN ONLY IMAGINE HOW DIFFICULT IT’S BEEN. MUSIC AND THE PERFORMING ARTS ARE VERY INTERPERSONAL. I think it’s been a very difficult period of time for musicians worldwide. Musicians crave and adore performing. That’s what they’re trained to do from a young age. When you take that away, it can be disruptive for performing musicians. You need that continuity as a performer.

HOW DID YOU DECIDE ON THIS YEAR’S PROGRAMING? Two years ago, when I was first appointed associate creative director, there was quite an interesting range of requests. There were those who wanted to play it safe with more familiar programming and others who wanted something different? I listened to both sides, so three of programs will be pretty conventional programs: an all Beethoven concert, palindromic program of Schumann

and Brahms, and the Saint-Saëns and Faurè. It’s pretty standard and much-loved Chamber music. Then I thought as far as the second French programs, maybe this is an opportunity to do something a little bit different. The first catalyst for that really was going to the Kehoe Iron Works. I thought, this has got real potential for us to do something a bit different. I just read a short story by Edgar Allan Poe called “The Masque of The Red Death,” and I knew the (André) Caplet piece by the same name because I’ve played it before. (Caplet wrote a chamber piece based on the story Masque Of The Red Death.) I thought, how about we have a narrator who’s going to read the story, we have the Poe story followed by Andre Caplet’s response to that story. We’ll do it in a semi-staged way, we’re going to have a little bit of enhanced lighting. SMF DESCRIRBES THE PERFORMANCE AT KEHOE IRON WORKS: In a semi-staged, partly programmatic concert, Impressionist France meets the mysterious world of Edgar Allan Poe, with a reading of Poe’s macabre tale “The Masque of the Red Death,” and in response, we hear André Caplet’s brilliant setting of the same story to music. To add to the Impressionistic element there is Claude Debussy’s exquisite Trio for flute, viola, and harp, and the program concludes with Maurice Ravel’s beguiling Piano Trio, perhaps one the finest trios ever written. DEE DEE BRIDGEWATER ON SMF, MEMPHIS ROOTS, HER ALBUM + MORE By Alex Arango

alex@connectsavannah.com

Dee Dee Bridgewater will make her Savannah Music Festival Debut on Friday, March 25 at the Lucas Theater for the Arts. A Grammy and Tony-award winner and inductee of The Memphis Music Hall of Fame, Bridgewater’s fourdecade long career has cemented her as a prolific figure in jazz. A UN Goodwill Ambassador, Doris Duke Artist Award recipient, and ASCAP Champion, she also leads a non-profit that supports women in jazz, The Woodshed Network. Her 2017 album “Memphis…Yes, I’m Ready” saw Bridgewater return to her Memphis roots both honoring and reimagining American Blues and R&B Classics. THIS WILL BE YOUR SAVANNAH MUSIC FESTIVAL DEBUT, RIGHT? Yes, I am so excited! I have never been to Savannah, and I am actually going to stay an extra day just so I can check out the city a little bit. IT’S BEEN TWO YEARS SINCE THE FESTIVAL HAS BEEN IN PERSON. ANYTHING YOU’RE LOOKING FORWARD TO? I don’t have any expectations. I’m just really excited to be coming and doing the two different programs I’ll be involved in! I WANT TO PIVOT AND TALK ABOUT MEMPHIS A LITTLE BIT. YOU WERE BORN IN MEMPHIS, BUT MOVED TO FLINT, MI, PRETTY EARLY ON IN

LIFE. HOW WERE YOU ABLE TO MAINTAIN YOUR LOVE FOR MEMPHIS BLUES AND JAZZ WHILE IN MICHIGAN? Well, I discovered a radio station out of Memphis that I could capture late at night around 11, which is a radio station that still exists today called WDIA. I would close my door and put a blanket down so the sound wouldn’t carry out. That way, my parents wouldn’t know I was up so late. That’s where I discovered Al Green and where I first heard Gladys Knight, who is one of the artists I honor on my album, Memphis, Yes, I’m Ready. WASN’T YOUR FATHER A DJ FOR WDIA? I found out when I was doing some investigative work in 2014 that my father, who had taught at Manassas High, was also one of the first on air DJs at WDIA, alongside Rufus Thomas and Panda BB King. “MATT - THE PLATTER CAT” RIGHT? THAT’S A REALLY COOL MONIKER BY THE WAY! Yeah, that’s what they called him [her father]! DID YOU AND YOUR FATHER TALK A LOT ABOUT MUSIC WHEN YOU WERE A KID? Not initially. When I started expressing a desire to sing, it was my father who kind of guided me. He introduced me to a man whose band he was in when I was a teenager. His name was Sherman Mitchell, and he was an alto saxophonist. When I was 12 years old, I expressed to my father that I’d wanted to learn piano, and coming from his generation, he said, ‘Girls don’t play an instrument, girls sing.’ Today I’d be like, ‘Have you lost your mind,’ but I was 12 and I adored my father. SMF JAZZ ACADEMY IN FULL SWING By Alex Arango

alex@connectsavannah.com

THURSDAY-SUNDAY @9PM

An essential aspect of the Savannah Music Festival’s mission is to stimulate arts education within the community. This is especially true for children and young adults. The SMF Jazz Academy is the newest addition to SMF’s education programs. The academy is a free, after school program offered to students in grades 5-12 from the Savannah Chatham Public School System, and is held at the School of Humanities at Juliette Gordon Low Elementary and the Salvation Army Center on Bee Road. Since 2003, SMF has cultivated a music education program that offers an outlet for area youth to learn about music and hone their craft. “Jazz is really awesome for kids to learn because there’s such a rich tradition of the music. It takes a lot of rigor, but there’s also a lot of creativity, flexibility and improvisation,” said Jenny Woodruff, SMF’s director of education and community engagement. Leaders at SMF say the academy strikes a balance between learning the traditions of jazz and its vibrant history, while also allowing students the opportunity to find their voice through musical creativity. If one were to visit the Salvation Army on a Wednesday afternoon, they would be met with the timbre of a saxophone, the strumming of guitars, the rattle of a snare drum and the soft melodies of a piano. However, it was not always this way. The program started in January, 2020 and shortly after had to transition to zoom classes in the wake of COVID-19. Aaron Jennings, the manager for the SMF Jazz Academy, said that having the academy go virtual had its challenges, but despite this adversity, students in the program stuck through and their patience and hard work have yielded results. “Some of the students who were in the

program last year stayed on. Now they’re doing even better, having gotten almost another year of in-person learning,” said Jennings. Christina Campbell, a 6th grader at Godley Station, has played the piano for over three years. This will be her second year attending the academy. For Campbell, jazz is a way to express herself and make friends. “I really like the freedom that you have. With classical music, you’re very limited because it’s kind of uniform. With jazz, you have to improvise so you have a lot of musical freedom,” said Campbell. “What got me to come back for a second year was that I’ve never really had a group of

people who collectively play music. It’s very fun to have people who relate to you and play the same instrument.” This is echoed by Rodrigo Zenil, a Jenkins High School sophomore and a first year with the academy. After his mother found out about the program through Facebook, Zenil decided to give it a try. “You get to express your feelings through your instrument. You’re learning about the style of music [jazz] and getting a feel for it,” said Zenil. “I’ve been learning a lot from the instructors from new styles, techniques and theory.” Find out more information about SMF Jazz Academy at savannahmusicfestival.org

IS THE REST OF YOUR FAMILY ALSO MUSICALLY INCLINED? At seven, I found out that my mom and my sister could not sing! We were singing this song, and they were not keeping the notes. I remember saying, ‘no, no, it sounds like this,’ and that was when the light bulb went on. Maybe this is something that is unique to me. CAN YOU DESCRIBE WHAT IT WAS LIKE TO RECORD YOUR ALBUM MEMPHIS, I’M READY AT THE WILLIAM MITCHELL ROYAL STUDIOS? Oh, it was magical. I actually felt like I was in a hallowed space. ‘Boo’ [Lawrence Mitchell] hasn’t changed. He also hasn’t altered anything in the studio either, so I used to joke that we were all going to get sick from the old soundproofing! It’s fantastic walking down the corridor to the main studio and seeing all of Al Green’s and other artist’s gold and platinum albums on the walls. It’s inspiring!

IN ADDITION TO YOUR MUSIC CAREER, YOU ALSO HAVE THIS INCREDIBLE BACKGROUND IN SERVICE BEING A U.N. GOODWILL AMBASSADOR AND THE ARTISTIC DIRECTOR FOR THE WOODSHED NETWORK (TWN). TALK ABOUT THE IMPORTANCE OF THAT. We just finished our third-year residency, which was from February 21 to March 4. We had 11 mentees, and I think we had 26 female mentors. We’re really trying to enhance the possibilities for these young women who are at the beginning and intermediate stages of their careers. We want them to have the business knowledge they need to further their careers. Bridgewater and The Memphis Soulphany will be performing songs from her album “Memphis…Yes, I’m Ready” at SMF on Fri., March 25 at the Lucas Theatre for the Arts. She will also take part in several other performances at SMF. Visit savannahmusicfestival.org to find out more.

It’s the feeling inside that bubbles out whenever you hear a familiar tune. The one that makes you lean forward to crank the volume. Your heart pounds. Your feet move. And, you know every single word because it’s the music of your youth. The soundtrack of your life. We’re talking about the quintessential music of the 1980s performed by such groups as Journey, The Rolling Stones, Def Leopard, Van Halen, Joan Jett, Blondie… and more. Today, some of the most requested bar bands from coast to coast are tribute bands. “We created the Legends of Rock Tribute Music Festival because the music is familiar,” said John Henderson of Coach’s Corner, sponsor of the event. “These tribute bands have solid fan bases and people know what they’re going to get when they get there and the music begins. They know what they’re coming to see.” Tribute bands can provide fans with a way to hear their favorite music in a live venue. “These tribute bands have really taken off in the last three years or so,” Henderson said. “Before the pandemic, we had the tribute band, Departure—a Journey tribute band—and they were wonderful. The response was overwhelming. They were seriously better than Journey. And, it gave us the idea to start regularly bringing in these tribute bands.” Henderson joked about how his selection process is simply picking music he likes. “I was able to stay open and in business during the pandemic,” Henderson said. “So, we were able to load up with musicians. The only bands touring at the time were tribute bands.” Henderson knew once the pandemic ended—or as close to the end as possible—he wanted to do a tribute band festival. “That’s what it became. I looked at larger venues, but that didn’t pan out. Still, I wanted to make it happen so I said we were just going to bring it to Coach’s Corner and make it happen. Coach’s Corner utilized extensive outdoor seating and staging during the pandemic to provide socially distanced events. However, Henderson is hoping this festival will draw an impressive crowd. “We’ve got a large stage in the back, it’s a great venue, and we’re shooting to make it the best we can,” Henderson said. “We’re really happy to see tickets selling quickly.” The two-day event kicks off on Fri., March 25 with three tribute bands playing that evening and four more on Sat., March 26, for a total of seven bands.

Henderson is proud of the team at Coach’s Corner for promoting this event and the bands they have brought in. “We’re trying to promote the best music and best music experience ever. It’ll be a great mixture of tribute rock where you’ll get everything from Pat Benatar to the Eagles; Van Halen to Journey; The Rolling Stones to Joan Jett.” The excitement in Henderson’s voice resonates. “Man, it’s a phenomenal thing,” he said, proudly. “We’re putting on something that hasn’t been done yet and we’re happy to brag about it.” When asked what the music of this timeframe means to people, Henderson didn’t pause. “The show is open to all ages, of course, and we hope the next generation will come out and hear some great music, support it and enjoy it, but… this is our music. The forty-plus. The Gen Xers. These are our songs and we just want people to come out and feel a part of it.” One of the tribute bands performing is Hotel California, which is fully endorsed by The Eagles. “They are 100% amazing,” Henderson said. “While The Eagles weren’t touring [although they’ve announced a new tour now], fans have been able to still enjoy the music they love so much and is a part of them. Tribute bands like these provide that.” Henderson hasn’t seen the Pat Benatar or Joan Jett tribute bands yet, but he is happy to have one of his favorites, Departure, a Journey tribute band. “They are the best Journey tribute band ever,” he said with confidence. “They sing the music people love to hear and love to sing along with.” “I expect Hotel California will put on an amazing show— everyone will—and it’s going to be a great show and a great time for people to get out and get back to life.” Local Savannah band, Monkey Man, a Rolling Stones tribute band, will be performing on Saturday night on the heels of their first time participating in the Savannah St. Patrick’s Day Parade. Henderson hopes the locals, regulars, and visitors alike will spread the word and come join them for the music festival. “It’s time to come back. We deserve it. We’ve earned it and there’s nothing like these great bands to bring us together.” “We appreciate the support from the community,” Henderson said. “We’ve taken on tribute bands as our ‘thing’ because we want people to know what they’re going to get when they get here. We’re bringing them A+ bands to help them forget their troubles or whatever is going on in the world and to just be in the music.” Information about the 2-day event and the current lineup can be found on Coach’s Corner’s Facebook page and at coachs.net

Formed in Atlanta by vocalists and husband-wife duo Joyce “Baby Jean” Kennedy and Glenn “Doc” Murdock, Mother’s Finest has been wowing audiences for over 50 years with their unique fusion of funk, rock, and soul. “We’re such spiritual people and we attach everything to a higher power,” Kennedy said. “That’s how we got together and how we’ve stayed together.” According to Kennedy, the story of Mother’s Finest began in the early 70s when she met Murdock in Chicago and the two began singing as an R&B duo. “Doc and I are from Chicago and we had a little duet going on where we traveled all around the world,” she explained. “Eventually, we were booked to perform in front of the Herman Miller Band in Dayton and that’s where we met our guitarist Mo. At the time, Mo was in the house band called ‘the Raspberry Blues Band,’ and one thing led to another and we ended up hooking up with them.” After performing dance sets with the Raspberry Blues Band for a period of time, Kennedy and Murdock headed to Miami to audition as singers for a band but it wasn’t meant to be. They eventually made their way to bassist Jerry Seay (Wyzard), reconnected with Moore, and settled in Atlanta to form Mother’s Finest. Kennedy says that the musical connection among them was unique and immediate. “We didn’t plan our sound, we didn’t plan the people…it was just kind of a natural affinity for each other,” she said. “Even though my background was in Gospel music, Doc brought a lot of the doo-wap, and we collectively as a group listened to a lot of Jazz. Mo and Wyzard

brought their own unique styles and we tried to incorporate all of that into our music which brought the heart and soul of each of us.” Kennedy says that although the group didn’t start out writing original music, she feels that they brought a certain level of originality with their take on covers from artists like the Beatles. “When we were starting out we were performing a lot of covers, but we always had our own arrangements,” she said. “People would recognize Eleanor Rigby, but it was our own version of it and I think that’s what set us apart. We did start writing our own music eventually.” Over the course of their long musical career, Mother’s Finest has received a lifetime achievement award from the Black Rock Coalition and is a member of the Georgia Music Hall of Fame with Top 20 hits “Baby Love” and “Love Changes.” They have also shared the stage with The Who, AC/DC, Black Sabbath, and several other iconic rock groups from the 1970s. In addition to Kennedy and Murdock, the current lineup features guitarist John Hayes, bassist Juan VanDunk, guitarist “Mo” Moore, and their son and drummer Dion Derek Murdock. “We love each other,” Kennedy said. “We tried splitting up once…we actually split up for six years and nobody found the same connection. We just have something special that has kept us going all of these years and I’m absolutely blessed to share the stage with such awesome people.” Mother’s Finest will hit the stage at District Live on Thurs,, March 24 at 8:30 p.m. To purchase tickets or for more information visit ticketmaster.com and search for the band.
