gratification. I can do a painting in the morning and within the same day, I can literally put it on a product.” Brodmann uses a unique technique to place her original watercolor paintings on fabrics and products. “After I began watercolor, I fell into sublimation as a recommendation from a friend who does it. I asked her if she could print it for me and she said I should do it myself. So, I did,” Brodmann said with a laugh. Sublimation is a newly popular method of printing that transfers a design from sublimation paper to a piece of fabric or product material with pressure and heat to change the solid ink particles into a gas. “We used to screen print fabric,” Brodmann said. “It was, as you can imagine, a very labor-intensive process. With sublimation… it’s a chemistry process. It’s turning a solid into a gas. Unlike screen printing, the dye is absorbed by the fabric for a natural, soft-to-the-touch feel. Brodmann explained she has a special printer and paper she uses. “I take my images, print them out, and then put the paper on the fabric or whatever product we’re imprint-

Candace Brodmann never dreamed she would have a successful homegrown business. Now, the Athens native and Savannah resident is launching her new summer collection full of functional products that make life easier and more beautiful geared toward coastal living. “We’re excited to feature these innovative, high-tech fabrics combined with my original coastal and ocean-inspired watercolors,” said Brodmann, Owner and Creative Director of the Savannah-based Moss + Marsh. Her company offers towels, ponchos, UV shirts, dry bags, and can coolers, to name a few of the products. Some of her designs showcase whimsical octopi, playful flamingos, and majestic sea turtles, which are all hand-drawn and painted by Brodmann. “I’ve always been an artist. Always done art,” Brodmann explained. “I went to [the University of Georgia] UGA starting as a painting major and then I switched to textiles. There was something very satisfying about making functional goods.” Even though Brodmann racked up experience working for a major bedding supplier where she got to see her designs in stores such as Macy’s and Target, in 2013, she and her husband, Harry, came to Savannah (his home) to start their family.
Brodmann chuckled and said, “The business started when parenting started. I began thinking about these products that we, as a family, needed. We started exclusively as a baby company, but we’ve transitioned and pivoted into so much more.” “Since the beginning, my mission/goal of the company was to make multifunctional products that make life easier and more beautiful. So, that’s been the root of it,” she said. “In college, I hated watercolor. But then, someone gave me a watercolor kit as a Secret Santa or something. I started dabbling and it just took off.” As with the rest of the world undergoing the changes of 2020, Brodmann found herself at a crossroads, as well. “I was thinking, ‘Where am I going with this business?’ and ‘What am I doing?’” she noted. “With all that happened [in 2020], I had a chance to follow my heart as to what I wanted. The coolest part is my customers and followers are receptive to that. It’s the best feeling ever… putting yourself out there, being vulnerable, and having people want more of it.” “We started printing UV shirts in 2020 and then we’ve added – I don’t know how many products. When I look at my art, it’s not wall art. It’s art that people live with and enjoy throughout their day and life. I learned how to manipulate it [watercolor] in the way I can control acrylic paint. I’m being realistic with a bit of whimsy.” Not just that, she stressed, “What’s so fun is the instant

ing on and put it under heat. The heat turns the solid ink into a gas and dyes the product.” And, because of such innovation and creativity, Moss + Marsh keeps Brodmann quite busy. “It’s crazy to think I have two full-time workers and a part-time person, as well,” she said. What’s cool about this summer collection is now that I have this team, it’s not all on me. We have design meetings and share the process together. I have a SCAD grad and a fashion student at Georgia Southern, so it’s great for me to share these skills and teach them.” “We’ve been doing the UV shirts, but wanted to brand a bit more with our beach towels and beach ponchos. The microfiber material is resistant to sand—just wipes off—and it’s really soft and quick to dry,” she said. One product she’s excited about is the dry bag. “It’s designed to keep your personal and waterproof items safe and dry. These bags have no seams or zippers or any place where water can seep in,” she explained. We’ve seen so many beach bags out there so we wanted to do something different, but super beneficial. When we go out on the boat, having things secure and where they won’t get wet is crucial.” Brodmann said the main source of their sales is their website. However, she proudly states they are also in over 100 different stores throughout the country. “We’re in Locally Made in downtown Savannah, as well as Polka Dots on the island,” the artist added. Brodmann feels she has gotten to this place due to several factors. “Being true to your own art, but knowing when to pivot. If you put something out there and it’s not loved, don’t take it personally. That’s the hard thing with artists and business. Sometimes they don’t go together, you know, the whole right brain, left brain. I wished my art school had taught business. I’ve learned a lot along the way through trial and error, but it’s so important to be true to your brand and your mission and people will find you.” It isn’t simply Brodmann’s business that grew as she and her husband welcomed two daughters. Ettalee and Violet. Violet’s arrival coincided with the company’s record orders. “We were at the end of 2021—our biggest quarter ever—and I was 8 months pregnant,” Brodmann
said, a bit winded at the memory. “Fortunately, things slowed down in January and I was able to step back and train and prepare the team before [she] arrived. It’s really special to have this team— God truly sent me this perfect team. I had to interview the perfect people to be involved in this very personal family business.” Ettalee colors in the shop and Violet has her own seat so both can be part of mom’s world and part of the team. “This is the first busy season where I’ve been able to step back, focus on the art and the bigger picture things, and my team is doing all of the production.” Brodmann stressed how grateful she is for her husband, Harry, an operations manager by trade. “Last year, I knew we had to have a serious talk about the growth we were having. I had a part-time job from home in 2021 and I wanted to quit. Harry told me I needed to show him on paper where I could make a certain amount of money. I laughed at first, but two months later, I looked at the track record and we were going to hit the goal and exceed it! We both had this teary-eyed moment where we were both… ‘Wow… we’re doing this.’” And, now, with her new summer items available online and in stores, Brodmann takes great satisfaction in knowing her efforts are appreciated. “One of the first times I realized the joy of this business was the end of 2020 when we were slammed for our first extremely busy season. In just retail alone, we were getting out 100 orders a week and couldn’t clear the cue! It was intense, but Christmas came and I thought about how many people were opening a present that I made. That was like…wow…surreal.” “One of the reasons I wanted to start this business was not just to create functional things, but because I love gifting. When I was testing out items, I was gifting everything to my friends. So, realizing that was sort of a full-circle moment.” Brodmann said she has a neon sign in her shop that reads: “Dream. Hustle. Pray.” “I feel like that sums up where we started to now…and what it’s taken to get here,” she said. “I’ve had dreams that may have been long term or short term, but I hustled to make them happen… and there were a lot of prayers.” The Moss + Marsh Summer Collection can be found online at mossandmarsh.co
SAVANNAH CULINARY INSTITUTE ANNOUNCES CONSTRUCTION TO BEGIN THIS SUMMER Savannah Culinary Institute announced that construction will begin this summer at 7 West Bay Street as the new downtown location for the expansion of Savannah Technical College’s Culinary Arts program. The Technical College System of Georgia recently selected The Pinyan Company as the construction manager. They are working on pre-construction estimating now and plan to start construction in mid-August. They anticipate it will be a 10- to 11-month project. With only 3,000-square-feet of classroom, lab and cooking space, Savannah Tech has had extremely limited resources at the Savannah campus. The kitchen operates 16 hours a day Monday through Thursday, plus four hours on Friday. In 2014, the College designated one classroom on the Savannah Campus as sugar and chocolate lab, allowing additional
space beyond the kitchen to be dedicated to culinary arts instruction. With the success of the Baking & Pastry Arts program, classes are full, and the College is unable to offer enough sections to meet demands. The expansion will more than double the available instructional space for Culinary Arts and Baking & Pastry Arts. Senior level (second year) students will take classes and work in the bakery and restaurant. Entry-level (first year) students will continue to take courses in the teaching kitchen and classrooms at the College’s campus on White Bluff. “This has been a long time coming,” said STC President Dr. Kathy Love. “We started dreaming about this project in 2009 and started really looking in 2011. We have had some near misses, and some great opportunities. This is exactly where we needed to be, and the building we
needed to be in.” “This location represents the very best real learning opportunity for our students,” said STC Culinary Arts Department Head Chef Gearry Caudell. “This has been a huge missing piece of the puzzle that we haven’t been able to do until now. We are excited about it.” Savannah Culinary Institute graduates are working in the area’s finest restaurants and establishments, including the Alida Hotel, Local 11 Ten, Le Café Gourmet, Savannah Yacht Club, and The Landings Club in addition to catering, entrepreneurs and private chefs. Connect Savannah will have more information on the new campus expansion on Bay St. as details are made available. Check connectsavannah.com for more information about Savannah Tech’s culinary offerings and future space downtown. - Compiled from Staff Reports

PETS OF THE WEEK Each week, we will highlight pets available for adoption from local rescue organizations. In June, we are featuring Chatam County Animal Services.
DALE
AGE: 1 YEAR OLD COLOR: BLACK AND WHITE WEIGHT: 45 LBS Dale is a young terrier mix who came to us as a pup and grew up in our Operation New Hope (ONH) program. He’s medium energy but gets bursts of excitement when he’s happy! He’s super friendly and loves attention, even from new people. He’s done well with dogs he’s met but any potential dog-sibling would meet Dale prior to adoption so you will know what their relationship will be like before you take him home. He walks politely on leash and doesn’t mind learning how to work with a new handler. Contact ONH staff at (912) 6449430 to meet Dale! Operation New Hope is a partnership between Chatham County Animal Services and the Chatham County Sheriff’s Office. ONH staff and inmates provide husbandry, socialization, and training to CCAS animals to increase their adoptability.
SHIA

AGE: 2 YEARS COLOR: BLACK, BROWN AND WHITE WEIGHT: 25 LBS
10
Shia came to CCAS in early April and he is ready to find his forever-home! He’s friendly with everyone he meets and is great with all types of handling, so he would likely do well with children (you can bring the kids to meet him before you adopt!). He makes just as many dog friends as people and he LOVES to play. Shia’s pretty smart so he would enjoy learning tricks and new commands. He already default-sits for treats so he is primed for positive-reinforcement training. He walks well on leash and is just waiting for someone to give him a chance! Call 912-652-6575 to set an adoption appointment to meet Shia.

Chatham County Animal Services (CCAS) is located at 7211 Sallie Mood Drive in Savannah, behind the Humane Society. We are open from 1 – 4:30 PM 6 days a week, closed on Wednesdays and major holidays. CCAS serves as a safety net for the lost, abandoned, and abused animals in our community. We offer volunteer opportunities, dog and cat adoptions, enforce animal-related ordinances, and intake stray or surrendered animals. Visit animalservices.chathamcountyga.gov for more information.

And they shine our love and light in everything they create for others.” The high-energy, digital conferment of degrees ceremony was emceed by entertainer, actor, composer, YouTube sensation, and SCAD alum Daniel Thrasher (B.F.A., performing arts, 2015). President Wallace conferred degrees and presented two honorary degrees to visionary artists David Yurman and Tricky Stewart. Yurman is a jewelry designer and sculptor with a lifelong love for design and innovation. With his wife and co-founder, Sybil, Yurman created America’s foremost luxury jewelry brand, David Yurman.
Stewart is a multi-Grammy Award-winning songwriter, producer, and composer. In a career spanning more than three decades, Stewart’s profound respect and appreciation for music has been the guiding force in more than 50 million records sold. Acclaimed actor, writer, director, producer, and bestselling author Amy Poehler delivered the commencement address to more than 3,200 graduates during the virtual ceremony. Poehler made her documentary directorial debut with Amazon’s critically acclaimed documentary Lucy & Desi, which she executive produced through her production company Paper Kite Productions. She also executive produces Netflix’s Emmy-Award winning series Russian Doll, Amazon’s Harlem, NBC’s Making It, which she co-hosts alongside Nick Offerman, Peacock’s Baking It, and Fox’s Duncanville, which she co-created and voices two characters. Her acting credits include Parks and Recreation, Saturday Night Live, Inside Out, and Mean Girls, among others. Other programming included remarks by SCAD alumni Erika Bazo (B.F.A., industrial design, 2014; B.F.A., service design, 2014) and Daniel Freyermuth (B.F.A., industrial design, 2012). The couple met at SCAD and have since led innovation
and change in their respective creative careers. Bazo is a senior user experience manager at multinational financial services firm Charles Schwab. Freyermuth serves as the product strategy and development director for Flarespace, a Storyteller Overland subsidiary and adventure van parts manufacturer supporting RV manufacturers and the DIY community. Their remarks encouraged the new graduates to “live free, explore endlessly, and tell better stories.” The HoneyBees, SCAD’s elite performance ensemble, were also featured, along with a compilation video of the university’s 2022 Outstanding Graduates from both the SCAD Savannah and Atlanta locations, and a special highlight reel dedicated to the Class of 2022. Outstanding graduates represented an array of the university’s top ranked degree programs including business of beauty and fragrance, interactive design and game development, industrial design, interior design, performing arts, visual effects, and user experience (UX) design. The digital event was livestreamed via YouTube with a link to the live broadcast, which gave at-home viewers a front-row seat to the show. Savannah graduates participated in the ceremony designated for their school on either Friday, June 3, or Saturday, June 4. - Staff Reports

AWESOME SAUCE: SAVANNAH STATE UNIVERSITY GRAD PLANS TO PURSUE ENTREPRENEURIAL DREAMS
FRANK GEORGE
DAN HA
TWO JENKINS HIGH GRADS ARE FOCUSED ON THE FUTURE
CONNECT SAVANNAH | JUNE 8 - 14, 2022
School’s out for summer, and for newly graduated seniors of the class of 2022 it marks the beginning of a new chapter in their lives. Graduation day is a culmination of a student’s hard work and dedication, and considering how difficult the last two years have been it’s quite the accomplishment. Two Jenkins graduates, Frank George and Dan Ha, discussed their high school experience and plans for the future. Frank George graduated as salutatorian from Jenkins High School, and was part of its engineering program. Along with his stellar academic performance George was also a varsity athlete, playing baseball his first three years of school all while juggling leadership positions in various clubs. George served as the president of the Student Ambassadors club, secretary of the national honors society and a member of the high school’s math team. During his senior year he decided to take a break from baseball and pick up an operations engineering apprenticeship at Gulfstream. For his internship George said that he learned how to work in a team and gained hand-on experience with real world projects. After the summer George will start school at Georgia Tech majoring in aerospace engineering. “Gulfstream influenced me because my dad works there, and I also got an apprenticeship, my senior year,” explained George on his motivation for choosing his major. Aerospace engineering would allow George to shoot for the stars, as he expressed his interest in developing and designing spacecraft. George also pointed out that a change in environment is something he is looking forward to. “I’m super excited to be going to college. Especially because this last year I noticed my motivation level was just going down,” said George. “I need a new environment to spark some passion and continue to work hard.” Prior to starting college in Atlanta, George is looking forward to hanging out with his friends over the summer and taking time to relax. Dan Ha is another recent Jenkins graduate. Since his middle school days at STEM Academy, Ha has gravitated toward the field of robotics. “All I did in school was just get good grades. That’s all my parents asked. I didn’t really know anything about the clubs. ...One of my teachers asked me if I wanted to join robotics since I was good at math and creative,” explained Ha. Ha chose to go to Jenkins because of the school’s engineering program, and joined the robotics club to continue pursuing his passion. “I want to be an engineer. I did robotics in middle school, and I saw that Jenkins also offered the program so I thought it was just a no brainer,” said Ha Ha also participated in Model United Nations as part of the Vietnamese delegation. He also was part of the SCCPSS Student Senate and National Honor Society. For college, Ha plans on attending Georgia Southern University for a year before transferring to Georgia Tech. He also has plans to visit Vietnam this summer to attend his cousin’s wedding. - Alex Arango
Originally from Stone Mountain, Tyler Holloway recently graduated from Savannah State University with her Master’s in Business Administration. A double Tiger, Holloway also completed her undergraduate at SSU receiving a bachelor’s degree in Marketing in Fall of 2020. Since completing her graduate degree, Holloway has big plans for the future. She is currently completing a 12-month Mary S. Peake fellowship, which helps equip recent graduates, veterans, and military spouses with leadership skills to help small and local businesses thrive. “I’m learning all these different skills that will prepare me to be a better candidate when I’m ready to transition into the workforce,” she explained. Once she completes her fellowship next February, Holloway has plans to eventually start a few businesses of her own. “I want so many. I don’t know which one I want to start first,” she laughed. One of the ideas she’s set on is a natural skin care line. “I know I’m not the only person with [skin] problems, so being able to provide what I need for other people in my situation will help me be more relatable to my market,” she said. Holloway got her first taste of entrepreneurship while pursuing her undergraduate at SSU. She and another classmate launched TigerCo Marketing, an online platform where SSU students can sell original products. The proceeds generated by TIgerCo Marketing are then used to fund microloans to help student entrepreneurs launch their businesses. She got the idea while completing an internship with Savannah Sauce Company. “[Owner] Mike Roberson actually developed a sauce for Savannah State University. It didn’t have a label or a real name yet, so my classmate and I put together a campuswide competition . . . to design a label for the sauce,” Holloway recounted. “We had a homeland security student who designed this amazing label . . . and [it] said Tiger Awesome Sauce. It had this great picture of a tiger on it and the sauce itself is this mustard-based, bright orange sauce. It just popped because the SSU colors are orange and blue,” she explained. Roberson was impressed by Holloway and her classmate’s marketing skills, putting together the competition together. He decided to let them sell Tiger Awesome Sauce on their own, independent of his company. “So my classmate and I decided to set up [an] ecommerce platform, TigerCo Marketing, to give other students on our campus who may have a product . . . a platform to sell it,” she continued. Holloway and her classmate were the pioneers for the ecommerce platform. They aren’t involved currently, but they are glad to have had the opportunity to help other students: “It’s going to be a great way for SSU students to boost engagement with their market even if they don’t have the platform. It was something exciting to be a part of, and it definitely gave me some entrepreneurial skills that [will help me] be a business owner later on,” she said. For Holloway, higher education is a means to freedom, and she is enjoying a sense of accomplishment and liberation: “I really do understand more and I can be a more productive citizen. . . I applaud anybody who is going to school . . . it all makes a difference and bettering yourself . . . makes you valuable member of society and gives you that self-accomplishment.” In all, Holloway is grateful to SSU for equipping her with the education and skills she will need to be successful in her career. “I want to thank SSU because the faculty members are amazing. It makes such a difference having that professor who actually cares about your mental well-being, not just academics,” she expressed. Holloway is excited for future Tigers completing their education at SSU now, and hopes they have great experiences like she did to set them up for success. - Chantel Britton

BUNNY IN THE CITY By Bunny Ware
When I introduced Town of Thunderbolt’s Mayor Dana Williams and City Manager Bob Milie to Simply Savannah’s Dru Usry and Marianne Ganem Poppell, I knew I had combined the most polite people I know together. I also knew that they would like each other so much they would bring the long awaited Blessing of the Fleet back from a 30 year hiatus!

When I pull up at the parade-staging park on May 28 in my big red Jeep Gladiator, I am revved up when I learn that I will be the caboose of the parade down River Drive. As I park next to American Legion Post 184 Color Guard, I have an unexpected guest run over to the Jeep and jump in.

Hey Casey Nash! The Department of Georgia First District Commander wants to cool off so she tells me to kick up the air while we pass by the parade line. I got you! Air conditioning blasting, we chase down the mayor and find him posing for pictures on “Hercules,” Thunderbolt Marine’s mammoth tow rig. Dana is one big uber-positive dude! Over the moon that this iconic event is back, the newly elected mayor shares, “One of my campaign promises was to bring back an event that highlights this historic shrimping town. Preserving the history and heritage of the hardworking men and women that make this community so unique is my goal.” Leaving Dana with American Legion Post Commander Joe Higgins, I see my chauffeur—aka new college graduate Sarah Lawson arrive. The communications grad is marketing/sales job hunting and is a little bit amped to drive in her first parade. Strolling past the Savannah State University Department of Marine & Environmental Sciences team and Dana Rutland with Towboat US, photographer Chris McShane joins us for some pics of Finches Sandwiches & Sundries’ colorful characters. One of those pretty people asked if I’m the Bunny from Jefferson County. Finally! I am actually meeting famous fashionista Emily Bargeron. Since I

don’t have a drop of fashion, Emily and I don’t run in the same circles, but I have heard amazing details about this tiny beauty and her fashion empire. After fun pics of Desposito’s Seafood and the wicked fun guys from Hinesville/Ft. Stewart Shrine Club, we head back to the Jeep to do beauty queen waves to the crowds lined up on River Drive. With sunlight streaming down, I glance over at the Wilmington river dotted with every type of boat and think that is a perfect day for a festival. Having a birds-eye view for pics and video from the back of the Gladiator, I get fab shots of Sean Murphy and his 360 camera, Marianne’s long-time supporters Laura Ross and Maureen Billings then see Tubby’s patriarch Ansley Williams. Looking tan and fit, Ansley has a new lease on life in the form of his three year-old grandson. Parking my Jeep with my Step One Automotive Group family, I take a selfie with my queens Maja Ciric, Chelsea Altman and Danica Williams. I then make a lap past the Beer Garden, the 40-plus street vendors and see a crowd gathering around a touch a truck section where the TOT Fire Department has a fire truck, a police car and Hercules.

Y’all, the Henna and Fairy Hair lady is here! I seriously want some red shiny ribbons in my hair but I can’t detour from my Big Cheese Truck destination! Bypassing hand rolled custom cigars and charismatic Rhoot Man Sidney Lance, I finally get a chance to slow Marianne down for a chat.
While watching Bishop Stephen Parkes of the Cathedral of St. John’s bless the boats with Holy water, and talk of the tradition of dropping a red rose wreath into the water to honor the lives lost at seas while providing for their community and family, I think that this is what the world needs more of—wholesome family friendly gatherings. These small but mighty communities need to be recognized and their history preserved and celebrated. Bless you Dana and Marianne for blessing us with this historic event! With roots in Thunderbolt, the third generation Ganem pauses to tell me why she loves this festival so much. “Remembering this event from my childhood and knowing how much it meant to the generations before me made this day extremely special. My entire family volunteered this week and knowing that this family tradition will be continuing fills my heart with pride,” she shares.

The Savannah City Amateur Championships are scheduled for June 25-26 at Bacon Park Golf Course. A 36-hole event at the Donald Ross designed course, the City Am routinely attracts 100+ entrants. There are several divisions, including men’s championship, men’s flighted, ladies championship, ladies flighted and several senior divisions. Fred Roberts is the defending men’s champion after carding a two-round total of 9-under (133) in 2021. For more information on this year’s championship, or to register, visit www.baconparkgolf.com or call 912-354-2625. Georgia Southern Baseball saw its season end over the weekend in the NCAA Regional round in Statesboro. The Eagles (41-20) were the nation’s No. 16 overall seed in the 64team postseason format, but losses to Notre Dame and Texas Tech eliminated coach Rodney Hennon’s club. GS had never hosted a regional before this season, making 2022 one of the most successful years in program history. In Savannah high school sports news … The new baseball field at Jenkins High School was officially named last week after school board approval during a June 1 regular meeting. The “Terry Webb Baseball Field” is named for the longtime coach and faculty member (1983-1999) at the school who was devoted to the improvement of the baseball facilities at the school. Webb died in November 2021 at the age of 72 after battling with cancer for many years

But this doesn’t mean the pro athlete can’t be exactly like us in other ways. In some sense, it makes them more relatable. Major League Baseball players Joc Pederson and Tommy Pham are great examples of this after their week-long dispute stemming from a pregame outfield incident between the two veterans made headline news. Pham, who plays for the Cincinnati Reds, slapped Pederson of the San Francisco Giants before a May 27 game between the Reds and San Fran. Why was Pham so upset he felt the need to slap a Joc? Well, the reasons came out after the game, when Pederson said the scuffle was because of a Fantasy Football dispute between the two league-mates from last year. FANTASY. FOOTBALL!? Yep. Two grown men. Two professional athletes. One very funny thing to argue about. If you haven’t heard about this story yet (which seems impossible) now would be the time to stop reading your favorite column, and go do some research. It’s worth it. Although, it’s only the second most infamous slap of 2022, so far. It’s important stuff, after all. The dispute of Pham/Pederson arose after Pederson was accused of illegally managing his team’s injury list slots. Pham had lobbed the first accusal grenade in the league’s group chat, another tricky piece of territory which we’ve all found ourselves in at one time or another. Pederson responded in kind by sending a GIF of Padres players (Pham was one at the time) stumbling into each other. “It is true, I did send a GIF making fun of the Padres,” Pederson said. “If I hurt anyone’s feelings I apologize for that.” What a great apology. But it is the kind that gets you slapped. You know it. We all do. “I’m sorry if I offended you” is the apologetic equivalent to slapping someone squarely across the good cheek. Anyone who has ever played in a fantasy football league can relate to group chat chat disputes and feelings coming into play. It’s just part of the game, even for the pros. Let’s hear from the league’s leader. The most hated man in every fantasy football league: The Commissioner. In this case, the $10K buy-in league was run by Mike Trout. That’s right, the best player of his generation, is also the commissioner of his fantasy football league. “(Trout) did a terrible job, man,” Pham said. But although he may have a major scandal on his hands, Trout doesn’t seem worried. “Every commissioner I know gets booed.”

The calendar flips to June and we-for the most part-find ourselves with a little more time on our hands. It’s the perfect opportunity sometimes to try a few things you’ve always wanted to but were too busy pretending that you didn’t have time for. There is always time. There are always choices. OK, lecture over. Here are a few bites you should work into your routines this Summer if you haven’t already. Dare I say you will Eat It and Like It. HOP ATOMICA’S HUMMUS Every once in a while, I will order something off of a menu just because it’s there. Curiosity, if you will. Too many times restaurants will offer hummus and not put much effort into it. So you get a throw away bland puree. That was not the
case at Hop. It was properly seasoned and had a very tiny bite to it, which we very much enjoyed. When you are lamenting running out of crispy red pepper strips, then you know someone did something right. And no, I don’t consider hummus to be an ideal beer drinking snack, but this stuff is excellent. BOCADILLO TOAST AT MI VIDA If you don’t know about Mi Vida -Tybee’s very popular clean eats joint, then A) You are in the minority and B) You definitely should. It still surprises me how many people don’t know about this gem out at the beach. Cold pressed juices, smoothies and vegan baked goods made in house. There is a lot to like here, and I do, but their Bocadillo (meaning snack) is a wonderful breakfast item or afternoon bite. It’s garlic rubbed piece of Auspicious Baking Company sourdough topped with thinly sliced serrano ham, manchego cheese, salt and pepper and a side of fruit. The last 2 times I’ve had it, I’ve added a poached egg as a bonus. It’s delicious.

DOUBLE SMASH BURGER AT SOUTH OF HEAVEN BBQ (Brunswick) I’m pretty sure I’ve mentioned this burger in this space before. If I did, that will tell you how highly I think of this particular creation. The one particular burger I had back in February was maybe the best I’d had in the last 10 years, no joke. Two double smashed patties with homemade bacon jam and pimento cheese. You may or may not get to the Golden Isles this summer for some beach time, but this burger is absolutely worth the drive. Here’s the catch...pay attention please...I don’t want hate mail. The burger is not on the menu every week. You need to check social media on Tuesdays so you can see their menu for the week. When that burger goes on it, make time for it. Oh and the
brisket is the best on the Georgia coast, too. TURKEY AND JALAPENO BACON SANDWICH AT ALEXANDER’S BISTRO Any drive-by will tell you, the secret is out at The Black Rabbit on Barnard Street for a great sandwich for lunch. If you are looking for something different, try Alexander’s Bistro. They opened a few months ago offering breakfast and lunch. Sandwiches and fresh baked goods are the foundation of this menu which leads me to one of the best turkey sandwiches I’ve had in Savannah. Turkey and Jalapeno Bacon, lettuce, tomato oil and vinegar. Simple enough right? The bread is made in house which makes all of the difference in the world.
Refreshing and sweet without being too saccharine, Over Yonder’s Hell Kitten is the perfect summer cocktail. It’s served in a tall, slender glass over ice with a lime wedge as garnish, making it as appealing to the eyes as it is to the palate. Bartender Miranda Norman talks through the recipe: “[The Hell Kitten is] 1.5 ounces of tequila, .5 ounces of agave almond liqueur, half an ounce of lime juice, and then topped with apple soda.” The Hell Kitten is a newcomer to Over Yonder’s drink menu, and it’s an approachable cocktail that anyone can enjoy. “It’s really tasty. . . It’s one of our better tequila drinks that we have on the menu now. . . It’s been pretty popular,” she said. See what all the fuss is about for yourself. Head down to Over Yonder and give the Hell Kitten a try this summer.

PACESETTERS CONCERT SUPPORTING GIRLS ON THE RUN By Kareem McMichael
Arts & Entertainment Writer
CONNECT SAVANNAH | JUNE 8 - 14, 2022
Girls on the Run of Coastal Georgia and Lowcountry will host its fifth annual Pacesetters Concert at 45 Bistro on June 12, taking guests on a musical journey that spans different genres and ages. “It is such an honor to see the community come together to help ensure every girl in our area has access to this important program,” said GOTR Board President and Pacesetters Musician, Kristin King. The Pacesetters concert was started by King five years ago when she joined the board. It is one of their key fundraisers. Girls On The Run serves seven counties and about 80 percent of their girls are on scholarship. “That means that anyone that wants to do this program can do it. The majority of our fundraising is just all geared towards raising funds that can provide scholarships for the girls. This event is a really great way to raise money and awareness about the organization,” said King. Pacesetters features local, female musicians, Cecilia Arango, Kristin King,
38
Payne Bridges, and Susanna Dye Kennedy, with support from Marc Chesanow on Bass and Robert Saunders on Drums. Historically the band is all female but this year one of their regular supporters and band members Maggie Evans was injured after being hit by a vehicle while riding bike. “Maggie is truly wonderful and has been involved foundationally in every concert we have done. She is doing amazing. She is the strongest woman I know and she is a wonderful musician and artist and I am thankful she is expected to recover fully,” said King. The music will be fun high energy covers of songs and the bands twist on other hit songs as well including Tina Tuner, Bruce Springsteen, Paul Thorn band and more. The venue 45 Bistro is supporting the organization and event by offering the venue. Girls on the Run is a physical activitybased, positive youth development program that uses fun running games and dynamic discussions to teach life skills to girls in grades 3-8. During the ten-week program, girls participate in lessons that foster confidence, build peer connections, and encourage community service
while they prepare for an end-of-season celebratory 5K event. “This program is really great, especially for girls who might not be inclined to join traditional sporting teams. This is more of a safe environment because it’s not competitive. It’s just do your best. Whether that’s walking, skipping, running, whatever. We have a completely inclusive program for anybody,” said King. King said she has always had a passion for being involved and making a positive impact in the lives of children. Her mom was a kindergarten teacher who believed a child should have someone outside of their parents or relatives that helps uplift them as well. With this foundation this is why King became part of the organization Girls on the Run and helped advance their reach and mission. “I think it’s very important that we are giving back to our community in whatever way that we are passionate about but for me, also to see and hear the story from the girls and their parents about how transformative this program is, it is mind blowing. I get goosebumps when I talk about it,” said King. “Sandy Hollander, the owner of 45 Bistro has been very generous and we enjoy this
space. The first hour from 5 to 6 will be a social hour and the atrium will be the concert. Guests will also have a chance to sponsor a team and we are always looking for volunteer coaches,” said King. In addition to sponsoring a team, attendees can sponsor snacks, water or any other aspect that is needed for the season. Tickets to the concert are open to the public and all proceeds from the event will benefit the local Girls on the Run council. Tickets are $150 for an individual or $250 for a couple and include food and drinks for the evening. To reserve, visit gotrcoastalgeorgialowcountry.org

BETH LOGAN’S RECOMMENDATIONS This week’s recommendation is to check out FLOW Gallery & Workshop at Palmetto Bluff, a 30-minute drive from Savannah. Facing the beautiful May River and located on Boat House Street in quaint Wilson Village, the gallery opened mid-April; (visitors can tell the Palmetto Bluff gate they are visiting the gallery and will receive a pass). Fittingly, FLOW takes its name from the all-consuming, fully emotionally invested state in which we all want to be immersed as creatives! The gallery features a curated collection of Southern artists, including a small section given over to work by residents of Palmetto Bluff. But perhaps, the most exciting element is that it serves as a showcase for the Artist in Residence program. Distinguished guests include Jess Nicoles and Erik Holmberg of J. Stark Leather Crafters, June 22-June 25; Ben Ross of Brackish, July 13-16; custom hat maker Mary Landrum Pyron, August 10-13; painter Blakely Made, September 14-17; and the first Poet Laureate of Charleston, SC, Marcus Amaker, October 5-9. The public is invited to meet these southern artisans and to join them in workshops. Full information and tickets for the Artist in Residence receptions and workshops can be found under the Arts Initiative tab at palmettobluff. com. TIFFANI TAYLOR:
A LIFE OF INTENTION AND GRATITUDE By Beth Logan
CONNECT SAVANNAH | JUNE 8 - 14, 2022
ART COLUMNIST
40
The softly spoken and exquisitely beautiful Tiffani Taylor is excited that her eponymous Gallery is celebrating 11 years this weekend. Situated in the heart of an historic district often known for rapid retail turnover, and on the heels of a two-year global pandemic, this is quite an accomplishment. But not surprising. Taylor’s gentle nature belies what she calls the “fire in my belly” – the drive and ambition to manifest and attain success as an artist. “I was six years old in Ogden, Utah, when I told my grandparents and my mom that I was going to grow up and become an artist and live in France,” Taylor tells me. Since that early age, she immersed herself in art and art history, applying for scholarships and entering competitions. “I think as artists we need omens and affirmations along our journey, and I received those even in junior high and high school from teachers, family, friends and from judges. I was the youngest person to win first place in the Western Art Guild competition. At 16, I saw a poster for SCAD at my school and just knew I’d attend.” She subsequently received the SCAD Presidential, Portfolio and Academic Scholarships and came to Savannah in 1988. Reflecting on her journey, she Taylor says, “Twenty years ago I was graduating Valedictorian of SCAD, I’d just bought my first car, I’d started my LLC, and a year later was able to purchase my first home.” Most local art lovers are familiar with the story of how Andre Leon Talley, (recently deceased, but at that time the editor-at-large of Vogue and a SCAD Board Trustee) heard her Valedictorian speech, came to her show that night, and subsequently gifted her art to Oprah and Diane von Furstenberg. What many don’t know, however, is that prior to that success, “I’d lived on $2 a day as a student and worked numerous jobs all through college.” Taylor goes on, “One of my first jobs was at Midnight Star Pottery. I painted a Mother’s Day gift for my mom and the owner invited me to paint all the display pottery for the window. So, when I worked there, I’d put out my portfolio of murals that I’d painted the summer before when I was 17 and I had little business cards printed. I painted murals, pottery, watercolor, and mixed media, never turning down an opportunity or a commission. And that’s how I got my first patrons and built my business from there.”

CONNECT SAVANNAH | JUNE 8 - 14, 2022
Now with a Masters of Painting and a Masters of Art History from her alma mater, Taylor is heavily involved in encouraging her fellow alumni. “I was a pioneer of President Wallace’s SCAD Alumni Atelier grant program in 2015 where I had a gallery in France for the summer. I’m incredibly grateful for that. How many universities reach out to their alumni, give them honorariums, art supplies, travel, accommodation, and a space in France to share your work with the world?” For Taylor, that opportunity led to famed fashion designer Pierre Cardin becoming a patron, and to the director of the prestigious ICART School of Arts in Paris asking her to teach a course on art and marketing. Today, true to the goals she laid out as a six-year-old, Taylor splits her time between France, Savannah, and Wyoming where her family lives. At one time, she tells me, she had an apartment in France but gave it up to come back to SCAD to earn an MFA because, “I knew I wanted to be a professor.” She feels teaching is her ultimate calling and aspires to teach “the business of art.” “As an artist, it’s as important to have business skills as it is to spend time in your studio,” Taylor asserts. “I love teaching students of every demographic and every age the pieces they need to put together to make that patchwork quilt that composes a beautiful business… How to create streams of revenue with your art…Knowing the Copyright Act of 1976…Knowing that you can license an image and create products…I want every artist to know these things.” She says all this, surrounded by not only her stunning paintings and pottery pieces, but also by an array of ‘Lifestyle Collection’ items such as phone cases, pillows, cutting boards, ornaments, puzzles and more - all created with her copyrighted images of poppies, the marsh, birds, and Paris flower markets. (I confess to having purchased a baby onesie and beanie painted with her signature poppies.) “As a person who is known for her poppies, I think it is important to note that I am not the first to paint them!” she tells me. “My inspiration is the childhood fire in my belly to achieve my purpose. I would stare at the poppies in my mother’s back yard and was surrounded by fields of them on the way to my grandparent’s Wyoming property each summer. I also experienced them in Italy and France of course, but my favorite poppies will always be those from my memory.” Taylor is also known for incorporating sheet music and stream-ofconsciousness poetry and affirmations in her softly hued, feminine paintings that are often highlighted with flecks of goldleaf. As children and teenagers, her grandmother and her sisters sang at county fairs, and Taylor grew up listening to her sing and to her mother playing piano. “My use of music stems from a dream I had in college when I was very homesick,” she says. “I dreamt about my grandmother playing the piano and I was in the Wyoming landscape where we would camp every summer. The music was filtering through the aspen trees. I’ve journaled since I was in 5th grade, and I could see my journals filtering through too. That dream has guided my work since my first quarter at SCAD.” Despite her early financial struggles, Taylor says she never felt ‘less than.’ Even during college, “I just wanted everyone to have the same amazing sense of fulfilling one’s purpose that I was feeling. As a junior, I had the vision to help others. I was walking down Drayton Street thinking about how grateful I was for the Presidential Scholarship and thought, ‘One day I’m going to have a fund to help other artists so they can feel this joy.’” Today, true to her vision, recipients of the annual Tiffani Taylor Endowed Painting Scholarship receive almost $2000 for art supplies for their senior showcase. But back to the celebration! Taylor hopes the community will join her this Saturday, June 11, for champagne and macarons to mark her gallery’s 11th year. Located on Whitaker Street, it’s a beautiful, light filled, joyful space that also displays prints by Tamara Garvey and Morgan Adler, and original works by her good friends Sally Mayer Seidel and Melissa Schneider. “I have a home studio where I paint, but originally I painted at the gallery. The inspiration came from the little galleries I visited in Florence, Italy, and seeing the painters in their smocks. And that inspiration was coupled with the Rothko Chapel, one of my favorite sacred spaces. I hope we invoke that same spirit. “ The Tiffani Taylor Gallery, 11 Whitaker Street, Savannah, marks its 11th year on Saturday, June 11 with a champagne and macaron celebration between 5 and 6 pm. WHAT ARE WE READING? PRESENTED AND CURATED WEEKLY BY E. SHAVER, BOOKSELLER THE PLOT
BY JEAN HANFF KORELITZ Jacob Finch Bonner was once a promising young novelist with a respectably published first book. Today, he’s teaching in a third-rate MFA program and struggling to maintain what’s left of his self-respect; he hasn’t written―let alone published―anything decent in years. When Evan Parker, his most arrogant student, announces he doesn’t need Jake’s help because the plot of his book in progress is a sure thing, Jake is prepared to dismiss the boast as typical amateur narcissism. But then . . . he hears the plot. Jake returns to the downward trajectory of his own career and braces himself for the supernova publication of Evan Parker’s first novel: but it never comes. When he discovers that his former student has died, presumably without ever completing his book, Jake does what any self-respecting writer would do with a story like that―a story that absolutely needs to be told.
FINLAY DONOVAN IS KILLING IT BY ELLE COSIMANO Finlay Donovan is killing it . . . except, she’s really not. She’s a stressed-out single-mom of two and struggling novelist, Finlay’s life is in chaos: the new book she promised her literary agent isn’t written, her ex-husband fired the nanny without telling her, and this morning she had to send her four-year-old to school with hair duct-taped to her head after an incident with scissors. When Finlay is overheard discussing the plot of her new suspense novel with her agent over lunch, she’s mistaken for a contract killer, and inadvertently accepts an offer to dispose of a problem husband in order to make ends meet . . . Soon, Finlay discovers that crime in real life is a lot more difficult than its fictional counterpart, as she becomes tangled in a real-life murder investigation.

BY ERIKA SWYLER Simon Watson, a young librarian, lives alone in a house that is slowly crumbling. His parents are long dead. His mother, a circus mermaid who made her living by holding her breath, drowned in the very water his house overlooks. His younger sister, Enola, ran off six years ago with a traveling carnival. One day, an old book arrives on Simon’s doorstep, sent by an antiquarian bookseller who purchased it on speculation. Fragile and water damaged, the book is a log from the owner of a traveling carnival in the 1700s, who reports strange and magical things, including the drowning death of a circus mermaid. Since then, generations of “mermaids” in Simon’s family have drowned-always on July 24, which is only weeks away. Simon becomes increasingly worried about his sister. Could there be a curse on Simon’s family? What does it have to do with the book, and can he get to the heart of the mystery in time to save Enola?

THE HOLY GHOST TABERNACLE CHOIR: PAST, FUTURE AND FAST FORWARD broken up” due to their drummer moving to Atlanta. While browsing Facebook he came across McDee’s post for a guitarist and pounced on the opportunity. “We were just advertising noisy power violence, black metal, or just loud, fast aggressive music. He [Givins] responded, and the three of us had a lot of fun writing three songs pretty quickly,” explained McDee. When the trio began working on songs, vocal duties were split between Hamilton and McDee. However, hey noticed that parts of their songs were becoming too difficult to play instrumentally while also providing vocals. THGTC decided that they were in need of a lead vocalist and front person in order to give their lyrics the attention they deserved. “When you have somebody who’s free from having to worry about playing an
instrument, it adds that extra layer of complexity and focus to the vocal parts. So, we decided to look for somebody,” said McDee on their decision to find a vocalist. Nat Lacuna had been living in Savannah for around five months. During that time their tattoo artist Temple Cantrell told Lacuna about various local shows and events happening in town. Cantrell who was a member of a metal and hardcore Facebook group passed along THGTC’s post about needing a vocalist to Lacuna. Through Cantrell, Lacuna was able to get in touch with McDee and auditioned for the band. All four members agree that their chemistry was solid there by cementing the band as a four-piece outfit. “Nat is an incredible creative source and when they get on stage, they are just an animal,” said Hamilton. The band has written and recorded

The Holy Ghost Tabernacle Choir (THGTC) is a savannah-based metal band that takes their name from their practice space, which was once a church. The band draws influence from multiple sub-genres such as hardcore and thrash metal, citing influence from prolific bands like Converge, Dillinger Escape Plan and The Jesus Lizard. It all started when drummer Tanner Hamilton and bassist Sleve McDee were playing in Heavy Books, which they described as an indie psych rock band with shoegaze elements. The two musicians shared common ground in the type of music they wanted to approach, and began writing songs with a much heavier sound. Not long after, THGTC’s guitarist Arron Givens of Hot Plate joined the band. Givens noted that during the time of joining THGTC, Hot Plate had “sort of

Like many bands that fall into the metal genre, THGTC is not timid about professing their discontent and frustration with the current times. Heavy music is a conduit for raw emotion, and although they agree that it can be a challenge to digest for the uninitiated, they aim to make it accessible for anyone looking to dive into the scene
no matter what walk of life. Lacuna, who identifies as trans, stresses the importance of having a platform to share ideas that many people might not be receptive to. “Heavy music has a strong sense of community, but sometimes it can be very close minded in certain pockets. The hardcore scene can be very much tough guy, bro-dude, jock stuff, and none of us are like that,” remarked Lacuna. “We’re very left leaning politically, and very much about social progression, equality, feminism, justice for the abused, along with equal treatment for disabled people, homeless people, people of color and LGBTQ folks.” The band also aims to put on engaging live shows with the hopes of showing crowds something unique. “It’s all about the live performance really, at the end of the day. We love writing music, and it’s really important to be pushing our boundaries as composers and songwriters. But it’s in service to have a great live show that sounds really good,” said McDee.

Second Death is a metal band that started in 2016 after the break-up of Valdosta-based metal band, Beware The Never Ending. Currently, the band’s lineup consists of vocalist Josh Claxton, bassist Clark Gargan, guitarist Jeremy Brown and drummer The band released their first full-length album Casket in 2017 and have steadily released singles from 2018 to 2020. Due to the uncertain nature of the pandemic, Second Death and its members needed to take time to find their footing. “When COVID hit, we were actually all living in Valdosta, but COVID made it to where Gio moved back to Jacksonville, Jeremy moved back to Philadelphia and me and Josh stayed here. Then during that time, three quarters of the band lost their employment,” said bassist Clark Gargan. COVID however did not stop the band from continuing to make music. The band actually recorded a full-length album last year called Born With It, which Gargan said should be releasing in the next couple of months. READ THE FULL STORY AT CONNECTSAVANNAH.COM
LOOKING TOWARD THE FUTURE
Currently, the band are gearing up to release their new album Slow Murder later this summer, and are releasing a music video, directed by Our Home Films, for their new single “Cow Tool” on Monday, June 6. The album will be released on Grave Face records and mixed by Jonathan Nunez, the guitarist from Miami sludge metal band Torche. The band is excited to be incorporating new experiment elements into their already unique sound through the use of harsh noise and synthesizers. We really lean into a lot of the textural sort of layers when we go for the more drone style stuff, interludes and whatnot. In our songs, you know, we rely on a lot of feedback and delay pedal you know, trickery and stuff.” said McDee. After the new album is released, the band is planning to spend time working on small short releases like splits and collaborative efforts with other bands. The Holy Ghost Tabernacle Choir will be performing at 12:30 p.m. on June 11 at the Ships of the Sea Museum for AURA Fest.
DEPRESSOR TALKS PLANS FOR 2022 Depressor started out as a Savannah metal band that turned heads with their first album Callous in 2018. Not long after, the band released their 2019 EP Harm, followed by a number of singles in 2020 and 2021. Since their conception Depressor has been diligent about adding their own flavor to Savannah’s heavy music scene, while also giving a nod to those who have come before them. As of 2022 the band has gone through a hefty lineup change, with members spread between Charlston, Savannah and Colorado. Their status of being a strictly local-Georgia band has transitioned to them becoming more of a regional act. “Because of the lineup changes, our whole band has definitely changed entirely. As of now I’m the last OG, member of Depressor now” said front man Lu Thor. Drummer Asher Dibernardo is the newest member of the band and said before joining Depressor he always saw them as a more regional name in the hardcore scene. their EP All American during the onset of the COVID-19 Pandemic. Although the situation prevented them from playing live shows, it allowed them to channel their focus on their EP. “I think I can speak for everybody when we say that sh-t f-ing sucked, because we started right before lockdown. What that allowed us to do was really hone everything in, especially All American. I think we recorded that in like two days,” said Hamilton. All American received a redux thanks to the help of Chris “Scary” Adams from the band Black Tusk, a staple of the Savannah metal scene. Scary helped the band record the redux version of their EP.
