MAKEUP ARTIST WHO ‘ HATES SCARY MOVIES’ IS A MASTER OF GORY AND CLASSIC HALLOWEEN LOOKS WHO IS INGA KRASILEVICIUTECESSNA? WHERE ARE YOU FROM? I was born and raised in Lithuania. I have a law degree, I have a degree in economics, and I have a bunch of business degrees. I went into law because I wanted to help people. Then, I ended up working in high-end nightclubs, but there was no place to grow there. I got in a car accident, and it made me rethink how I live. I was probably supposed to die. The entire passenger side was gone, and I walked away without a scratch. So, I was like “Ok this is the God sign. I need to do something new.” I sold all of my things and moved to Germany for ten years. I was selling makeup products, so I thought I should probably learn to do makeup. I did a few photoshoots and I got addicted. I later won “Makeup Artist of the Year” and got a scholarship to a hair school. I started studying, I started teaching, and then I opened two studios in Germany. Then, I found my husband, and he brought me as a souvenir to America!

YOU HAVE A TON OF EXPERIENCE IN DIFFERENT THINGS UNDER YOUR BELT.

SO HERE IN SAVANNAH, WHAT DO YOU DO? I do makeup and hair, lash extensions, and stuff like that. I do makeup for events, weddings, photoshoots, Halloween. I like to create a full look. I don’t like to separate just makeup and hair. I like to do a full transformation. I want to find people who have never had anything done and transform them into a new person.

Yes, I can pinpoint one. I had this idea in my head to go to Paris. We had this designer who made beautiful dresses, I had this fantastic model. We drove from Germany to Paris, and in the middle of the Eiffel Tower, I set up my chair. We did her hair and makeup, and did the entire photoshoot right in the middle of everything. The photos were published in a bunch of magazines.

WHAT KEEPS YOU MOTIVATED? I think it’s just my personality. I’m always motivated. I always want to try new things. The people also motivate me. I always get really good energy from them, it’s like a drug. When you do someone’s makeup and hair and they really, really love it, it makes me feel so amazing. I want it more.

WHAT’S YOUR FAVORITE THING TO DO IN SAVANNAH? WHERE DO YOU LIKE TO HANG OUT? I found one place that looks like home. The Peacock Lounge. The vibe inside feels like home to me. I really love Noble Fare restaurant, too. The food is to die for.

WHAT IS YOUR DREAM, OR YOUR GOAL? I have one big dream. I really want to open a professional bridal studio for makeup and hair with a tiny school in it, where I can teach. The wedding industry is huge here. I would want to add on a very boujee bridal boutique.

YOU DID THE CONNECT SAVANNAH TEAM’S MAKEUP FOR HALLOWEEN USING SPECIAL EFFECTS. HOW DID YOU GET INTO THAT? So I hate scary movies, I hate ghosts and all that stuff. I told myself that I will never do special effects, because I’m scared. One year I tried it, I bought all the stuff, and used my husband as a model. It looked so realistic that my father-in-law called and thought my husband had been in a car accident. It was so good, and it was really easy. Now I like to do costumes and headpieces, too. Oliver Maner To Raise Funds and Collect Supplies for Women’s Emergency Housing Center

In recognition of November as National Homelessness Awareness month, Oliver Maner LLPis gearing up to raise funds and collect supplies for Union Mission’s A Haven for Her Capital Campaign to expand their Emergency Housing Program to unaccompanied, homeless women. The law firm is holding an internal donation drive and asking for the community’s help to collect goods for the new women’s program expected to open in the first quarter of 2022. Attorneys Amelia Stevens and Victoria Nease are leading the effort and challenging other Savannah law firms and businesses to help homeless women in our region. “Helping these women will, in turn, improve our community,” said Stevens, who also volunteers as an Adult Exploring Adviser with the Coastal Georgia Council of Boy Scouts of America. “Organizations like Union Mission help make Savannah a better place. Hopefully, our efforts will make life better for these women and assist this nonprofit in meeting its goal of helping 100 women each year.” Donations of goods can be dropped off at the Oliver Maner offices at 218 West State St. during business hours. The firm will accept donations until Tuesday, Nov. 30, then donate the items to Union Mission. This new Emergency Housing Program is in need of the following · Personal care items (toothpaste, shampoo, soap, feminine hygiene products, etc.) · Bedding (sheets, blankets, pillows and pillowcases) · Laundry supplies Union Mission created an Amazon Wish List with the items needed to get the program started, as well as for the long term. Statistics show more than 180 women each night are homeless in Chatham County. The renovated space will have 16 bedrooms and eight bathrooms serving 100 annually. It’s designed to provide emergency housing and supportive services to 32 unaccompanied, homeless women for up to 90-days at a time. Union Mission provides basic human needs for the residents, including food, clothing, transportation, access to mental healthcare, employment support and more. The goal of this program is to help residents maintain stable housing and become independent members of the community. Once completed, this new Emergency Housing Program will be the only facility along the I-95 corridor from Florida to South Carolina dedicated solely to unaccompanied women experiencing homelessness.

haunted tales with you while others tend to keep the paranormal chatter on the quiet. In any event, wherever you’re staying, ask the hotel/host/concierge if the location has any history or stories. Experiences have been reported at The Marshall House, 17Hundred90, The Hamilton-Turner Inn, and The Planter’s Inn to name a few. THE SAVANNAH THEATRE Theaters are notorious for being haunted. Perhaps it’s the transient nature of the business, how many people move in and out of a theater, or because there have been tragedies known to happen during performances, but a theater usually has good ghost stories. The Savannah Theatre is no different and offers a dark and spooky ambiance to take in your surroundings for any hints of lingering players who still need to be on stage. Burns stressed that while any amateur ghost hunter can get started, the greatest tool to have with you is “your open mind. To truly appreciate what this city can offer, we cannot let our preconceived notions or biases cloud our judgment. We have to be still and listen and pay attention.” He added a trick he shares with visitors to his walking ghost tour. “I tell folks to focus their attention ahead. Find a spot with your eyes and focus on that. Often, I find paranormal activity appears in the periphery—on the very edge of your field of vision—where you might see figures manifest in the corner of your eye.” One doesn’t have to be a paranormal investigator to appreciate the eerie beauty of this haunted city, especially at this time of year. “I came to Savannah for the first time nearly 20 years ago because of its haunted reputation. I have never been disappointed. This is my Mecca as a paranormal investigator. I could continue on the rest of my career investigating the paranormal without ever leaving this city. There’s so much history, so much tragedy, that has taken place here over the years that it is no wonder if this is the most haunted city in America.” When asked what it is we can learn from looking at our past, Burns stated, “When you decide to seek out haunts and the stories and people attached to them, you also become an historian by proxy. Savannah’s past can help provide a wealth of knowledge about this amazing city – who we were, who we are, and who we can be. We can’t undo the tragedies of our past, but we can honor those who came before us, recognizing all they sacrificed and suffered, and celebrate their lives. Ghosts don’t hang up their sheets after November 1st. The spirits of Savannah are around all the time. With Spanish moss adorning the live oaks, casting shadows and mystery across the city, Savannah certainly dresses her spooky part, not only in the month of October, but throughout the year. It’s no wonder, considering Savannah’s haunted reputation and how it is widely known as one of the most haunted cities in America. Recently, customers on the online review site Yelp chose The Olde Pink House in Savannah as the #1 haunted location in the country with The Marshall House Hotel in 11th place. Paranormal investigator and owner of Exploration Point Tours, Patrick Burns, said there are several factors that come into play as to why Savannah is considered to be so haunted. “Savannah is known as ‘The City Built on its Dead” because much of the historic district and beyond was used as burial ground,” Burns said. “In Colonial times, the area just outside the boundary of the city, which ended roughly at Bull and Harris Streets, was called the lane of defense. It was a wall of timbers that shielded the city from invaders. Everything outside of that area was considered wilderness and is where many folks were laid to rest since burials in Colonial Park for non-whites and non-Protestants were not permitted at the time. As the city expanded south, those graves weren’t necessarily moved or relocated and most often were built or paved over.” “Savannah’s wartime history pre-dates that by almost a hundred years. The second bloodiest battle of the Revolutionary War was fought outside the city in the Siege of Savannah. It was an attempt by the Continental Army to take Savannah by force from the British because of its strategic importance as a seaport. In just two hours’ time, over 2,000 members of the Continental Army lay dead or dying outside the lane of defense.” The Yellow Fever Epidemic of 1820 caused over 700 deaths throughout the city with mass graves often the only option. “We’ve all heard how when someone’s grave is desecrated, the spirit(s) may not be at peace or may be restless and not aware of their situation. So, with Savannah basically being one gigantic cemetery, people are likely to experience odd occurrences as the city lives up to its reputation.” With many infamous “haunts,” known to visitors and locals alike, there are as many unusual or lesserknown locations in the city where one might experience paranormal activity. Here are some suggestions from Burns’ own tour:

ANTIQUE ROW There are several antique shops together in the historic district on Bull, Whitaker, and Jones Streets, to name a few. As humans, we attach a lot of items to our lives to the point where our prized possessions having the possibility of becoming haunted. When you look at an historic relic or an heirloom in an estate sale, online, or through the window of an antique store, you start wondering who owned it, what its history and past is, and does it have a story to tell. The Squares – While all of Savannah’s squares are unique, some seem to be more haunted than others for different reasons. They have their own back story or historical occurrence that has left an “energetic scar” on the land. Here are a few more unusual locations: MADISON SQUARE As the site of encampment for General William T. Sherman and the Union troops when occupying Savannah, Madison Square has been known to have apparitions of men and women in period clothing, most in soldier attire, oftentimes moving through the square as if going about their business. WRIGHT SQUARE also known as Courthouse Square, is where public hangings occurred. One popular story is that of an indentured servant from Ireland, Alice Riley, who was hung for a crime she said she didn’t commit, even cursing the city before the noose dropped. There is an old legend saying, “Moss will not grow where innocent blood is spilled,” so it’s interesting to note on the north end of the square where the gallows were thought to be, no moss grows in the trees. Wright Square is also the monument to Tomachichi, the Yamacraw chief who aided Oglethorpe and his men. CALHOUN SQUARE Perhaps the most haunted is Calhoun Square because it is the site of the largest African-American slave burial ground in the city. The graves are not only unmarked, but there is no marker or monument to those who lost their lives enslaved to another. With no disregard to individual resting places, the spirts in Calhoun Square often leave electronic voice phenomena (or EVP, when a voice is heard on a recording when that voice was not present) stressing sadness, suffering, and longing. THE CEMETERIES Both Colonial Park Cemetery and Bonaventure Cemetery are chock full of Savannah history and lore, as well as the dark beauty of the graves and monuments. Many feel spirits may hang around a cemetery because that was the last place the family gathered. Others think cemeteries aren’t haunted due to it being a final resting place. Savannah SCORE awarding three winners at fourth annual BizPitch competition By Angie Miller

A canine behavior rehabilitation center, a wine bar centered around community, and a holistic women’s health practice are just a few of the business ideas that will be presented during Savannah’s SCORE BizPitch competition on Fri., Nov. 5. Similar to the television show “Shark Tank,” but a little less harsh and with more of a community effort, the event aims to highlight entrepreneurship and the importance of small business in the Savannah community. The eight finalists that were selected will have four minutes to pitch their business ideas to a panel of judges. The judges will then only have a few minutes to ask questions before going into deliberation to choose three winners. Those selected will win cash and free professional services valued at over $10,000 to help launch their new businesses. Mary Githens, owner of Latin Chicks & Mint To Be Mojito Bar and one of the judges on this year’s panel, is looking forward to giving her input.

“I’m looking forward to sharing some knowledge from my business experiences with the finalists,” Githens said. “I have faced many challenges working in the hospitality industry so I feel that I will have many questions regarding business challenges that they may face.” Scott Pierce, co-owner of Coastal Care Partners and last year’s BizPitch winner, will also be returning to the competition but this time, he’ll be on the other side joining the panel of judges. “The number one thing my wife and I took away from BizPitch was that it really made us think about our business model,” Pierce said. “We received a lot of great feedback from the judges and they really pressed us on real-world business related issues. So, I’m hoping that I can offer that same kind of insight and provide some little nugget of advice that one of the businesses will be able to take away.” Pierce noted that in addition to offering insight he is planning on focusing on a few different business aspects but plans to stay open-minded during the questioning process. “I want to stay flexible and my questions will really depend on what the pitch is. I think some of the core issues

are there for everybody when they’re first starting up a business, so I plan on keeping an open mind and responding to anything that sticks out relating to my own personal business experiences. But, there are certain things that I will harp on like ‘how do the customers see you? Is it an experience that the customer will want to sit back and tell their friends about to give you that word of mouth marketing?’ Things like that.” Pierce added that although the prize money is fantastic, he feels BizPitch offers a much bigger, longer lasting prize. “BizPitch is a very valuable, positive experience and something that everyone can take something away from. SCORE has been tremendous for us and entrepreneurs need to avail themselves of it. Regardless of the outcome, I hope all of the finalists continue to pursue their business endeavors and take advantage of the Savannah business networking community.” Savannah SCORE’s BizPitch will take place on Fri., Nov 5 from 4 - 6:30 p.m. at Georgia Southern University’s Armstrong Center. I’m going to let you in on a little secret. I’m not afraid to share because if you love keeping tabs on the goings-on food wise in Savannah there is one central location that more times than not is the best place to do it. The Forsyth Park Farmers Market. For every tip we get on a new big fancy restaurant coming to Savannah (and there remain a lot of them out there), I have becoming increasingly fascinated by what the market has to offer. Once upon a moon it was just a nice place to grab some produce, but it has evolved beautifully. From coffee, to fresh hummus or fresh fish or even a locally made popsicle on a muggy Saturday morning, FFM has become a real treasure for locally sourced eats. Including the one I want to share with you today. I first stumbled across Mitla Tortillas easily 3 or 4 years ago at the market. Organic flour and corn tortillas, prepackaged of course and sold every Saturday morning at the park. When I asked my requisite flurry of questions, I found out that a number of Savannah restaurants were using the tortillas, but headquarters was in Charleston. Fair enough. They went on our list. If you follow our adventures on our Saturday afternoon television show, then you know we have frequently traveled to Charleston for good eats and/or fun stories. This was one we were going to keep an eye on during our next visit to Chucktown. Funny thing happened during 2020 on a routine visit to the market. First, I didn’t see them on a routine visit to the market. I wondered if they’d been able to survive. After my next visit we asked if they were gone. “Nope. They were here last week. They’ve moved here to Savannah.” How about them apples? A month or so later, we were in their production facility on Louisville Road watching hundreds, if not thousands, of corn tortillas being ground, cut and cooked for distribution. The process actually is fascinating. The results are the cleanest tasting tortillas you will find in the area. They are vegan, gluten free and delicious. It turns out Mitla is not only alive and well, but thriving. You can find them in 3 area Whole Foods stores with plans for more down the road. The move to Savannah apparently had been in the works for a while, made easier by business and

family. “Actually, my dad is from here.” Says Grace Newland, who along with her husband Cliff started making tortillas after a visit to Mexico. “We were looking for a change. We did a lot of business here, so we started looking.” The move wasn’t purely emotional. They considered the potential growth of the company. If they wanted to grown liked they had hoped, Savannah offered a geographic advantage with 2 interstates nearby and a 2 hour drive to the Florida border, there were advantages. It all made sense. By November 2019 they were here full time. They also took into account that there weren’t any mass producers of certified organic tortillas in this area. You could find a couple in Atlanta, sure, but down this way you were out of luck in that department unless you really knew where to look around town on both sides of the Savannah River. Grace tells me they regularly get calls from new chefs who arrive in town looking for a solid product. “We make our bread and butter on restaurants.” That’s why you see thousands of tortillas being made here every day and every week. The average consumer Grace says is obessesed as well. “Obsessed is a good word to describe it. Some people have called it life changing. Clean tortillas without all of the fillers.” She says. “We have had people say they didn’t like corn tortillas until they had ours.” Same goes for the folks at Whole Foods. They’ve asked them to create enough supply for a few dozen stores already, but they aren’t really set up for that right now. They could probably make enough tortillas, but the product requires refridgerated transport. That’a a lot of logistics to bring together on the fly. So they are taking it slow. “Right now we are building our audience at Whole Foods. We’d be interested in expansion at some point.” There’s no rush. Slow and steady wins the race, especially coming out of a year like 2020. Mitla tortillas are not only not going anywhere, but you can find them on occasion at the Forsyth Farmers Market as well as at….you guessed it. The Whole Food store on Victory Drive as well as on Hilton Head Island. Every last one of them made a stones throw from the heart of Savannah. Eat ‘em and like em.

We hope to make it a huge annual tradition. The Kehoe Iron Works is the exact venue to pull something like this off,” she added. “There will be lots of food and fun and quite a few surprises! We are hoping to give the feel of old Fall and Halloween festivals. The music will be fun, the food will be amazing, and it’s all for a great cause. We will be giving back to the mission of the Ronald McDonald House Charities of the Coastal Empire.” The party will run from 7 - 10 p.m. and the evening will be hosted by local radio celebrity Renee LaSalle. Local DJ Precisa will be spinning the tunes, hopefully pullling in a few Halloween classics to the mix. Chazitos Latin Cuisine and Bayou Cafe food trucks will be onsite. Bacardi will also be mixing up three specialty drinks exclusively for the party. There will also be an inflatable obstacle course set up by Hopping with Harkleroad Inflatables, for those who dare! A 360 photo booth from Dynamic Vision will offer live photos, but there will be plenty of options for selfies! Proceeds from pumpkins (purchased and carved by local businesses) used to decorate the party as part of the Buy Local Savannah Pumpkin Carving Contest will be used to provide services for Ronald McDonald Charities of the Coastal Empire. “This is the first time we have ever done anything like this,” said Courtney Rawlins, current president of Buy Local Savannah, a group whose mission is to support independent, locally owned and operated businesses in the greater Chatham County area. “We will be using the proceeds to help feed families involved with Ronald McDonald House Charities of the Coastal Empire, one of our member organizations. This is just another creative way our members are supporting nonprofits and supporting our community. We’ve had an outstanding response to this and we can’t wait to see the different designs.” Tickets purchased in advance are $25, and $30 at the door. There will be no refunds. Must be 21 to attend. Multimedia artist Shawn Turner’s work studio is a feast for the eyes. The garage/ work shed at the rear of his Ardsley Park home is filled to bursting with shelves of doll parts, taxidermy forms, glass domes, bird cages, crazily upholstered chairs, chaise longue, and finished or halffinished fantastical creations of all kinds: birds, deer, pumpkins, bears, horses, skulls and more. And everywhere, and I mean everywhere, there is fabric. “I’ve always liked fabric,” Turner tells me. “I like the tactile textures, the array of colors. In a way it is easier than painting because the fabric is already created, and I just start mashing it back together to make it something new and different.” I first saw Turner’s work at an Isle of Hope art show and have since purchased eccentrically quilted drapes, a hand painted chair, a fabric mushroom under a glass cloche, a custom shower curtain and a collection of fabric fishes. I crave more pieces; the man’s imagination is limitless. “Once you start working in fabric, people come forward with odds and ends they’ve held onto,” Turner says. “I very rarely buy fabric unless it’s for something very specific. I am constantly upcycling.” The bottom shelves of his crowded workspace are filled with large fabric sample books. “That kind of happened by accident. A couple of my friends in town are high-end interior designers, and I asked them one day what happens to all the samples when they get discontinued. They said, ‘Oh, we throw them away.’” Not anymore! The first time they called, Turner got “a wheelbarrow of stuff” and a month or so later when they were

cleaning out their samples closet—a lot of remainder fabric from design jobs they’d completed—he picked up a “small pickup truck load.” Originally from a creative Midwest family, quietly spoken, Tuner tells me, “My grandfather was a master woodturner and previously a professional draftsman—back when you actually drafted by hand. He could take things apart, make an incredibly detailed mechanical pencil drawing and then put them back together. Like me, he wore a lot of hats, but he always worked with his hands, loved gardening and working with wood. My mom was a professional tailor—a very unusual profession for a woman, not like being a seamstress at all.” Growing up with a mother who made high-end men’s suits now strikes him as ironic. Ironic, because just as it was unusual for a woman to be a tailor, “when I’m out showing work, some people are surprised that my stuff is made by a man.” Another misunderstanding is evident in Turner’s next remark: “It’s hard when you work in fabric—people tend to think of it as just a craft or a hobby, not really an art form.” Doubtless drawn to fabric because of his mother’s tailoring, Turner started in weaving at Memphis College of Art and then spent another year or two as a painting major at the Univ. of Illinois. “I was really quite good, winning several scholarships, making Dean’s list, etc.,” but, he tells me, he was on the “eight-year plan” and interspersed his education with waiting tables and

two little legs.” Recent beloved creations include a waist-high giraffe in opulent tapestry and velvets and a large standing crane. Turner buys taxidermy forms and finds bears and other stuffed animals in thrift shops to use as the basis for his potpourri fabric designs. Recently he came across a stash of horses from American Girl dolls. He tells me with glee, “There was a pile in the thrift shop, and they were like $2 apiece!” Turner’s imagination runs wild…His studio has a corner of birds…birds perched on branches…birds in cages…magical deer heads with collaged fabric racks of horns...a hodgepodge of fall-inspired pumpkins with wooden stalks… and my favorites—tapestry cups, saucers and teapots that look like miniature Claes Oldenburg soft sculptures for a Mad Hatter’s tea party. “I finished a couple of coats this spring. I like making clothing, but it’s an incredible amount of work. During the pandemic I was fortunate to receive several commissions which carried me through the whole lockdown,” he says. “I don’t usually do commission work, but it was within my purview and what else was I going to do? I made eight different custom lampshades, a jacket, a vest, and shipped a lot of pieces to a boutique in Illinois that represents me. bartending. After art school he ran a high-end catering service before finally deciding that he needed to change his life. “A friend said, ‘Well if you’re so miserable, do something about it.’ And I think that was the wakeup call I needed. So, I sold off everything I owned, packed up my few belongings and my dog and moved to Savannah.” Turner had visited a few times over the years and loved the feel of the city, the historic district, the art community, and the ease of getting around from his central Ardsley Park location. Turner and his husband lived for a while in South Carolina and that’s where he really started to focus on his art, fabric and sewing. “It was very isolated, and I had time to focus. Now, six years later, I look back and really see how much my work has changed and grown because I had the time to devote to my craft and give my full attention to detail. My skill level has really improved. I do some machine work but mostly its crafted and always finished by hand.” Turner started out making a line of multi-purpose tote bags and utilitarian items. Then he started covering furniture in his crazy patchworks. His grandfather had done upholstery work and Turner says he can “do the rudimentary/artist version of upholstery.” Gradually though, he moved away from furniture and started creating more and more animals after discovering the “tapestried creatures” created by French multimedia artist Frederique Morrel —taxidermy forms covered in richly colored old tapestries. Inspired by these fantastical, mythical beings, Turner first started making little birds. “The birds are really my favorite. They are a lot of work and it’s really hard to get something so delicate to balance on these

The SCAD Savannah Film Festival returned for the 24th year on Oc. 23, celebrating the achievements of accomplished and new filmmakers. The day was loaded with screenings and workshops for festival-goers to experience. The evening was topped off with the stars walking the blue carpet. Walking the carpet was SCAD president Paula Wallace. Fashion designer Christian Siriano made an appearance as well. His exhibition “People Are People” opened at the SCAD Museum of Art on the 22nd. This is his first solo museum exhibition and it honors his captivating contributions to fashion. The honoree for the evening was award-winning actor and filmmaker Kenneth Branagh. He was the recipient of this year’s film festival lifetime achievement award recognizing his body of impressive work in various aspects of the film and television industry. Branagh has over 60 film and television credits on his resume. His film “Belfast” was screened on Saturday night. Before the screening a Branagh received his award with a standing ovation from the crowd. “I can make as many films as I like but if there isn’t an audience, it’s not worth anything. You’ll see in the film you’re about to see that there’s a love of what’s happening right now, which is still pretty unusual to see a large group of people in a movie theater together looking at a big screen. It’s a miracle and because you are coming back to support this film festival, you inspire me,” said Branagh as he accepted his award.

Branagh served as writer, producer and director on Belfast which is about a nine-year-old boy who must chart a path toward adulthood through a world that has suddenly turned upside down. A film that he describes in aspects as a reflection of his life with parallels to current day situations of families getting through the pandemic. “Writing this was personal, making it was little more a process of giving it away to the actors and to our crew. A lot of actors improvised and did beautiful work. The collaborators made things a little different, so it wasn’t a literal recreation of my entire childhood,” said Branagh. “It was sort of an emotional experience writing it. I chose to do it at this time because we were living through this period of uncertainty and being unsettled in the way the pandemic had its effect on everybody,” said Branagh. “The story of the film is about a period of deep uncertainty with my family. When something happened when I was nine years old, when our world was turned entirely upside down in the north of Ireland, what was a peaceful environment? A very happy environment turned into a very, very dangerous one.” Branagh expressed it was a very emotional experience watching the film as he had to look into understanding his family and a big moment of change in their life. He is pleased that people are watching the film and recognizing how some changes applies to their own lives. Belfast will be released in the US on November 12 and it is already generating Oscar buzz. Makeup and hair designer Donald Mowat and sound designer and supervising sound editor Theo Green for the movie “Dune” walked the carpet as well. Dune was screened on the 23rd at 2 p.m. at the

Trustees Theater and Mowat and Green participated in a Q & A after the screening. Mowat and Green both were thrilled to be at the film festival and to experience their work on the big screen because over the past year covid had limited most releases to streaming platforms and other mediums. “I cannot believe the size of the cinema we were in. A film like this is made in honor of the cinematic experience in the cinematic space, everything in the visuals and the sound was designed for that. So, for people to be able to go out and get that communal experience in a darkened room with their phones off, it’s everything,” said Green. “This makes me very happy and especially for young people, the students, to be able to get back into the world and experience cinema, that’s really important,” said Mowat. Dune, directed by Denis Villeneuve, tells the story of Paul Atreides, a brilliant and gifted young man born into a great destiny beyond his understanding who must travel to the most dangerous planet in the universe to ensure the future of his family and his people. “It’s a character driven movie. It’s also an action driven movie, and I think sound in particular, can be one of those things that really distracts people if it’s too flashy and gaudy and outlandish. So, it’s all about trying to keep a sense of realism,” said Green. “It’s very interesting how many sorts of parallel experiences we have and very separate things that we do in one visual, one hearing and sound but they are all very grounded in reality,” said Mowat. Dune was released in the U.S. on Oct. 22. The SCAD Savannah Film Festival continues through Oct. 30. Find the fill schedule and more at filmfest.scad.edu

The blood-thirsty vampire Dracula has arrived in Savannah. The Savannah Stage Company’s (SSC) fall production, “Dracula” is adapted from Bram Stoker’s novel by Catherine Bush. Audiences can experience this one act adaptation in person and on stage at the Savannah Repertory Theatre’s PlayShop on Halloween weekend. The SSC has done several literary adaptations by Bush, and this time in the director’s chair is SSC staple Lexi Balaoing Ambrose. “There was a lot of pressure, I think, immediately taking on something like ‘Dracula,’ a story that was written over a century ago and has been done so much and portrayed in so many different ways,” said Ambrose. For their 9th season, Savannah Stage Company is serving up a female-driven production that will show a fresh new take on a timeless horror classic. The vampire Dracula flees Transylvania for London, where the packed population provides plenty fodder for their blood-thirst. Only Agatha Van Helsing, the worldfamous metaphysician, has a hope of stopping the undead. “Ultimately we’ve always strived to make the bolder choices and go outside of what you know. We started with a miscast cabaret when we first did our first big fundraiser and we’re dedicated to offering these opportunities to people who wouldn’t, typically, let’s say, in this industry, be offered these roles,” said Ambrose. “That has always been something that we’ve strived to do. It just happened to align the stars just happen to align in this particular production where the play itself is written, where Ven housing was already written as a woman.” You’ll have to see the show to find out if Van Helsing can save the day or will her heroic efforts merely render her the next victim to Dracula’s deadly bite? In the title role of Dracula is another SSC leading lady, Ashley Frazell Cook. Leading the hunt for Dracula as Van Helsing is played by Megan Wellman Blanton, last seen as Madame de la Grande Bouche in SSC’s Disney’s Beauty and the Beast. Dracula also stars company favorites Ellen Barneycastle as Lucy and McKenna Lyons as inmate Reinfeld. SSC welcomes new company members Luisa Nolasco as Mina, Kory Johnson as Jonathan Harker, and Shawn Ringer as Jack Steward. For their 2021 Season of Transformation, SSC is reminding that they set the parameters of their art and have the ability and responsibility to adapt, adjust, and transform based on the needs of the community they are serving. “I would say the reason for transformation is that a lot of things have happened in world as well as closer to home. We’ve moved into different responsibilities that we’ve never been entirely challenged to do fully before. So that’s where it came about. It was just kind of a natural. This is what has to happen for growth to happen,” said Ambrose. BAYOU SOUL AND FOLK PSYCHADELICA: TWO DISTINCT SHOWS AT DISTRICT LIVE Singer/songwriter Marc Broussard returns with ‘Bayou Soul’ As the son of the Boogie Kings guitarist and Louisiana Hall of Fame member Ted Broussard, singer and songwriter Marc Broussard was born with musical talent in his veins. “My father found out I could sing when I was 5 years old and it all started with the song ‘Johnny B. Goode,’” Broussard said. “My dad and I were watching the movie Back to the Future and I saw Michael J. Fox perform the song and I became obsessed with it. I just kept singing that hook over and over again and the next day, my dad brought the lyrics home and taught me the words. I started singing in key while my dad was playing along and he put me on stage that weekend. That was pretty much the start of my music career.” As a young boy, Broussard continued to accompany his father on gigs and quickly became acclimated to every aspect of the music scene. “I would help my dad carry his amps and guitars backstage and wait until

At the age of 18, singer, songwriter, and musician Liz Cooper was only halfway into her second semester in college when she decided to leave behind her family, friends, and a collegiate golf scholarship to pursue her dream - a music career in Nashville. “I took a hard left turn and surprised everyone,” Cooper said with a chuckle. “But I had to follow my true passion and I’m glad that I did.” Growing up primarily focused on perfecting her golf skills, Cooper thought she had her life figured out when she landed a full-ride golf scholarship her senior year in high school. “Everyone, including myself, thought I would continue to go on to play golf,” she said. “I played so much that I didn’t have a lot of free time to do other things. But as a teenage girl I needed a way to escape my emotions. So, I picked up the guitar when I was 16.”

it was my time to shine. Once I was called out I would sing an Otis Redding song or Johnny B. Goode, get my three minutes of fame and pass out on the road back home. I was just a kid,” he said laughing. At the age of 17, Broussard and his father started playing regular Friday night cover gigs at a club in Lafayette Louisiana. It was then that he knew he wanted to skip college and focus all of his efforts on singing and writing his own soulful music. “After sitting idle working random jobs for a while, I got a call from a music manager in Lafayette asking if I could open for a band,” he said. “Of course I said yes and within six months I had an independent record deal. Six months from there I had a new record deal with Island Def Jam and a new independent album out...all the pieces kind of fell into place very rapidly, and I was only 20 years old.” With the release of his debut album, Broussard spawned his first big hits “Where You Are” and “Home” that charted on Billboard’s Adult chart. “Home” was also incorporated into Kelly Clarkson’s live setlist during a tour in 2007. To date, Broussard has released over 10 studio albums and continues to write songs that he categorizes as

“Bayou Soul.” “My influences do sort of span the gamut but Stevie Wonder, Marvin Gaye, Brian McKnight, and James Taylor are probably the definitive list,” he said. “And I kinda categorize my music as a mixture of those things. The critics like to call it ‘Bayou Soul’ so, I guess that’s probably the closest label.” Broussard, who’s currently on his way to perform in Savannah, says he’s looking forward to returning to the Hostess City and getting back out on the road again. “I’m so ready,” he said. “Not being able to tour the last couple of years has been tough. But, I’ve written more music than any period of my life, a batch of about 60 songs that we’re ready to record and release,” he said. “We’re also getting ready to launch a fan club with the intention of dropping two new original songs every month as well as some live streaming concerts and some other content. But it’s exclusive to fan club members only. I wanted to connect more directly with my fans and say thanks for supporting me all these years. Crediting a wide range of influences for inspiring her to write, Cooper said she grew up listening to a lot of John Mayer and other modern day folksingers along with her parents favorites: Bob Dylan and the Grateful Dead. “I became fascinated with these musicians just burying their souls into their lyrics,” she said. “I knew that I wanted to continue to learn more and write my own songs, so I dedicated all of my free time (when I wasn’t playing golf) learning to play. It was something that I kept close to myself.” After graduating high school, Cooper attended college for a semester and a half before realizing that playing golf wasn’t truly where her heart belonged. Shocking everyone in her life, she decided to drop her golf scholarship, pack up her things, and head to Nashville. “I got so burned out,” Cooper recalled, “I started to realize that golf was just my hobby, not really my true passion. But music was, and I felt like it was calling me. So, I went out on a limb and decided to just go for it. Everyone knew that I loved music but I don’t think anyone knew how serious I really was about it at the time.”

When Cooper arrived in Nashville, she only knew one person in the Music City, a friend of a friend of her dad’s who was nice enough to give her feedback on the songs she was writing. But, after spending more time there circulating the music scene, her social circle expanded and she developed a sense of community that made her feel right at home. “I started doing literally anything I could to play, and eventually I started meeting people,” she said. “I was writing nonstop and playing gigs everywhere. Eventually I met my bandmates and we formed ‘the Stampede.’” Liz Cooper & the Stampede blend an eclectic mix of psychedelic sounds, misty dream-folk, and rock n’ roll in their music. “I’d call it folk-psychedelic rock,” Cooper said. “I feel like the style kind of touches on all three of those. It’s definitely a rock n’ roll show, but I think my influences definitely bring a folk vibe, but there’s also psychedelic and rock sounds from my bandmates as well.” Liz Cooper & the Stampede will perform Sat., Oct. 3o. Part-time local and NY Times bestselling author Patti Callahan held a book-signing event at The Paris Market on Broughton St. to celebrate the launch of her new novel, “Once Upon a Wardrobe.” Her latest book tells the story of where Narnia (the imaginary location in “The Lion, The Witch, and The Wardrobe”)comes from, pulling back the curtain on the early life of author C. S. Lewis. The Paris Market hosted the event with champagne, snacks, and discounts. Morris, founder of Morris Multimedia, and the man behind the restoration of the expansive Trustees’ Garden complex was recognized by the Historic Savannah Foundation, which presented the “Historic Savannah Spirit Award” to Morris during the organization’s Annual Gala on Sat., Oct. 16 at Kehoe Iron Works in Trustees’ Garden. “Mr. Morris was chosen because of his dedication to Savannah as well as the positive economic impact that he’s made to the city,” Sue Adler (HSF CEO and president)said. “It’s not something that we give every year, and he’s the second recipient to ever receive the award. ‘Spirit’ is attached to it because we feel that Mr. Morris embodies the spirit of the seven founders of the Historic Savannah Foundation.”
