COMMUNITY INTRODUCTIONS:
MEET
TASHA BARNES OF SAVE OUR YOUTH SAVANNAH By Angie Miller
angie@connectsavannah.com
Tasha Barnes, co-creator of Save Our Youth Savannah and a charity advocate, has worked tirelessly for over a decade to give back to those in the community who need it. In addition to staying busy year-round with charity fundraisers and community events, she goes the extra mile for the holidays with her annual “Holly Jolly Christmas,” a fundraiser where Barnes and her team help less fortunate kids in the Savannah area with food and toys. This Thanksgiving, she’s gearing up to feed hot meals to elderly in the community with her annual Thanksgiving “Feed Savannah” initiative.
TELL US A LITTLE BIT MORE ABOUT YOUR BACKGROUND. I’m a single mother of four children, three girls and one boy, and I was born and raised in Savannah. I’m also the co-creator of Save Our Youth Savannah, an organization that works to help families in need with everyday living. I’m very passionate about helping others and I’m a firm believer in community and the power of faith. I started Save Our Youth because I had a difficult childhood and I know what it’s like to struggle and to need help. My mission is to give love back to those who need it and before forming Save Our Youth Savannah, I was silently giving back with a few other members of the community.
CAN YOU TELL US A LITTLE BIT MORE ABOUT FEED SAVANNAH?
Oh, it’s something that can’t be put into words...to see the faces of the people we’re helping. It’s the best feeling in the world. It’s like we gave them platinum and to us we’re giving away silver.
YOU SAID YOU’VE STRUGGLED AS A SINGLE MOTHER, WHAT’S THE HARDEST PART ABOUT RAISING CHILDREN SOLO AND HOW DO YOU STAY SO POSITIVE? The hardest part is figuring it out. A lot of times you don’t have all of the answers so you do your best to figure it out. Parenting doesn’t come with a handbook. As kids get older, their personalities change, so it’s kind of really just figuring it out along the way. It’s tough though, but we make it work. What doesn’t kill you makes you stronger. Sometimes you just have to go with the flow in life. I think my faith and seeing the power of community is what keeps me so positive. And working with such great volunteers and other people who are looking to give love back.
WHAT WOULD YOU SAY TO ENCOURAGE SOMEONE TO DONATE TO CHARITY? Always remember that no one is exempt. Especially after this pandemic, everyone should know that we never know what hand life is going to throw us. I believe that if you’re in a position to do anything, it doesn’t have to be financial, but just donating your time to help out and give back. I don’t think you have to have a lot to give a lot. I was a lost child myself and growing up a lot of the times the parents in our village didn’t have a lot but they shared what they had. With that, we were able to multiply and sit
at tables to eat. We didn’t understand at the time how they came together as a village just to feed the community. But they did it, and I’m just big on that. They led the way.
IF YOU WON THE LOTTERY, WHAT WOULD YOU DO WITH THE MONEY? I would buy my kids a dream home and build a community center for kids.
DO YOU HAVE A PERSONAL MANTRA? Purpose over people.
WHAT DO YOU LIKE TO DO WHEN YOU’RE NOT WORKING? I love to cook! I make my own salsa actually. I make garlic butter sauce, seasonings, different types of salsas that can go on a variety of different foods. Cooking is my outlet and each salsa that I’ve made has been made in different seasons of my life. I’m constantly looking for new salsa recipes online! CONNECT SAVANNAH | NOVEMBER 17-23, 2021
We started Feed Savannah in honor of Jerry “Smitty” Hampton, a young man who died several years ago on the Savannah bridge. Jerry was one of the gentlemen who silently donated with me years ago. It was a small operation and we donated to a few families but we still made an impact. When he tragically passed, we started Feed Savannah in his memory to continue on his legacy and the impact that he made in the community. This year for our annual Thanksgiving Feed Savannah fundraiser, we decided to give out hot meals to the elderly. During the pandemic, I learned that our seniors and elderly disabled were affected way more than people realized. I felt that they needed some extra love and attention this year. We will be visiting different Independent living facilities and providing a hot meal to them. I think it’s extra important to let our elderly community know that we haven’t forgotten about them and that we appreciate everything that they’ve done for us along the way.
HOW DOES IT FEEL TO GIVE BACK TO SO MANY PEOPLE?

BRAND NEW DISC GOLF COURSE OPENS AT GSU By: Angie Miller
CONNECT SAVANNAH | NOVEMBER 17-23, 2021
Disc golf enthusiasts now have a second course in Savannah to test their skills thanks to officials at Georgia Southern University. On Tues., Nov 9, students, faculty, and the general public joined Georgia Southern for the ribbon cutting and grand opening celebration of the new course, which is located behind the intramural fields on Georgia Southern’s Armstrong Campus in the wooded area near the tennis complex. The course is now open to students, faculty, staff, and the general public free of charge from sunrise to sunset every day. Sean Willett, assistant director of Intramurals and Club Sports on the Armstrong Campus, proposed the project as he considered new activities to offer students while indoor recreation wasn’t possible due to COVID-19 precautions. Willett and his team hope the new course will open the door to new activities for students, as well as provide them with an opportunity to take a break from their busy schedules. “We really wanted to be able to offer a course where any student who wanted to jump out there could,” Willett said. “The woods are very serene, so it gives you time to get away from things, de-stress and relax. We want students to go out there, have a good time and enjoy the relaxed atmosphere.” According to Megan Feasel, director of Intramurals and Club Sports, the new 9-hole disc golf course gives players two playing options in the form of a short course and a long course and each hole has two tee pads allowing players options to play each course independently or mix and match for a full 18-hole round. A practice area is also available to allow for warm up before hitting the course. “We are looking forward to adding another exciting engagement opportunity for students, faculty, staff, alumni and community members to take advantage of at our beautiful campus,” Feasel said. “With nine baskets and 18 tee pads, short and long throws, this course can be enjoyed by anyone at a recreational or competitive level. It’s something new, something different and something to embrace as this is only the second disc golf course in Savannah! With the addition of the new course, Feasel says they’ve received a lot of positive feedback and formed a new Club Sports team. “When the course was being designed, we had a student (Matthew Mahoney) that was interested in starting a club,” she said. “Sean Willett worked with him to get all paperwork completed and approved. Our grand opening brought out many students and 8-10 of them joined the club.” The university’s new disc golf club will be led by coach and Georgia Southern staff member Wes Johnson who is also a disc golf sponsored athlete. “Wes is very connected in the Disc Golf world and is a high level competitor,” Feasel said. “His connections will bring a lot of positive outcomes to our club and university. We are excited that we have a new Club Sports team that was developed from the course and we look forward to having tournaments and competitions.” For more information about the new course visit recreation.georgiasouthern.edu/ discgolf/course

Savannah SCORE has announced the winners of the organization’s 4th Annual “BizPitch Savannah” entrepreneurial competition. “BizPitch Savannah” is Savannah SCORE’s kinder, gentler version of TV’s “Shark Tank.” On Friday, November 5 at Georgia Southern University’s Armstrong Center Ballroom, eight aspiring entrepreneurs, selected from a field of 36 finalists, pitched their business ideas to the “BizPitch Savannah™” panel of judges. Three contestants were selected as the winners and were awarded cash and free professional services valued at over $10,000 to help them launch their new businesses. Pierce said that “the number one thing that my wife and I took away from BizPitch was that it really made us think about our business model. We received a lot of great feedback from the judges and our SCORE Mentor. They really pressed us on real-world, business related issues.” - Compiled from Staff Reports
SAVING CHRISTMAS:
No shipping delay at local makers markets By Jessica Farthing
Back in September, news outlets began to report shipping delays, warning shoppers to begin their gift buying early in preparation for a disrupted holiday season. The pandemic’s disturbance to the supply chain is still in effect, causing a scarcity of needed products. There is still a lack of truck drivers for distribution, freight costs are rising and a few COVID closures in China over the summer have combined with a surge in demand for products to make shortfalls. Local artists want to fill that need for the holidays with handmade, readily available goods. This weekend (Nov. 19-21) two markets offer over 100 vendors for a huge selection of Savannah shopping along with food and music at both. Here’s a roundup of what they have to offer:
MARSH & CO. HOLIDAY MARKET Shoppers can head out to the islands for the first annual Marsh & Co. Holiday Market at St. Andrew’s School in their lower school parking lot. On Saturday from 10 a.m. - 3 p.m., around 50 vendors will offer their goods for visitors interested in art, fashion, jewelry or gifts and the first 50 guests will get a free prize. Proceeds from the event support the school. About half of the vendor list already have their products for sale in the Marsh & Co. store. The gift shop is unique, born of the need for a retail location for Allison Mol’s Marsh & Co. body care and home products. Mol explains, “I had an opportunity to open a retail spot but didn’t have enough merchandise to fill it. I decided to reach out to some of my vendor friends to see if they could contribute and it grew from there.” The location is in itself a gift market with over seventy local and regional companies and sourced items that stock the store full of local goods. For the Holiday Market, Latin Chicks and C. Alexander’s food trucks will be serving up latin-style dishes and burgers with Jenni’s Treats on the Street providing ice cream for dessert. St. Andrew’s student and talented guitarist Sarah Koegler will be performing while shoppers can indulge with some face painting or henna body art from Glitterboxx Studio. COHEN’S RETREAT POP UP MARKET There’s no shortage of entertainment at this seventh annual hosting of local vendors. Cohen’s is open Friday from 5 - 8 p.m. for their girl’s night out. Signature cocktails are available in the bar and Josephine Johnson will perform her blend of soul, country and folk in the foyer. Saturday will bring a more barbecue vibe from 10 a.m. - 3 p.m., an outside pig picking offering BBQ sandwiches, hot dogs, hamburgers and more cookout-style food to be washed down with Creature Comforts Brewing, Old Smokey Distillery and 3 Taverns Brewery. Performances by the Lowcountry Crooners in the morning and Charlie Fog in the afternoon will complete the experience. A diverse range of artisan products will be available at the market. Shoppers might purchase a new houseplant from New Roots Co. and combine that with a handmade macrame plant hanger from fiber artist Spanish Moss Macrame. There are bright bracelets from Lou Bangle,
sustainable home solutions from the Lite Foot Company, hand forged metal jewelry from Gillian Trask and quality dog treats from Moose Chews. Over fifty companies will participate over the weekend events. Cohen’s Retreat, 5715 Skidaway Rd.

President Kyle Marrero approached me about the idea and once I showed him what I had in mind, we decided to move forward with it and everybody went to work putting the collection and the entire design together.” Kessler added that each guitar was specially handpicked and visitors will be treated to a visual, educational, timeline that will allow them to explore the evolution of Gretsch instruments.
GEORGIA SOUTHERN...WAS AWARDED THE GIFT OF THE GRETSCH COLLECTION OF INSTRUMENTS, A MULTIMILLION DOLLAR COLLECTION OF FABULOUS HISTORIC GUITARS, DRUMS, AND OTHER INSTRUMENTS. “Between 150-170 guitars were handpicked for display and each guitar has a real history to it,” he said. “We also have three sound domes that have about five programs that talk about different aspects of the Gretsch experience from the guitars, who played them, the family themselves, how long they’ve been in business, and how they’ve evolved over the years. It’s a very interesting, educational experience.” According to Tyler Gray, director of entertainment and programming, the exhibit is not only visual, it’s interactive as well.
“There’s going to be two different aspects—a QR code that gives you a guide of each guitar as you’re going through and a plaque with numbers by each guitar that will also show you which guitar you’re going to,” Gray said. Guitars won’t be the only Gretsch instrument on display. “We also have two imported drum sets that were used by famous musicians,” Kessler said. “There’s also other musical instruments included that they’re not particularly known for but they did make... brass instruments, saxophones, trumpets, etc. It’s a beautiful presentation, quite an experience, and we’re really proud to have it here. We encourage people to come, read about the different instruments and find out about their favorite musicians. The grand opening of “That Great Gretsch Sound!” is just the beginning of the three-day long event-filled celebration. “We have a lot of fun activities lined up and a lot of great things planned for kids,” Kessler said. “There will be a magic show, a family-friendly adventure exploring the dinosaurs and geodes hidden throughout Plant Riverside District, a lot of live music, lectures, and plenty of other fun activities spread out throughout the days. I encourage everyone to get online and check out all of the different activities we have planned.” The festivities will wrap up on Sat., Nov 20 with a live concert by The Legacy Band at Martin Luther King, Jr. Park and a fireworks display over the river. With the recent completion of Plant Riverside District’s Atlantic Building, the 10 year long redevelopment project of Savannah’s newest entertainment district is now officially complete. To celebrate, officials are hosting a free three-day, family-friendly extravaganza with live music, performances by Cirque Divina, informative lectures, fireworks, live artist painting demonstrations, fountain shows, food, drinks, and more, Nov. 18-20. “We invite local residents and visitors from across the country to join us at Plant Riverside District for a fun-filled family-friendly celebration focusing upon three major themes: water, beauty and the natural sciences,” said Richard Kessler, CEO of the Kessler Collection. “This three-day grand opening celebration is our way of giving back to everyone who has supported our vision for Savannah’s Entertainment District. After 10 years, the project is finally complete.” The three-day celebration will kick off at noon with the grand opening of Georgia Southern University’s new “That Great Gretsch Sound!” exhibit featured in District Live’s lobby and performance space in the Atlantic Building. According to Kessler, “That Great Gretsch Sound” was developed through a special partnership between the Fred and Dinah Gretsch School of Music at Georgia Southern University, the Gretsch Family, and the Kessler Collection. The Dinah Gretsch School of Music was established in early 2021. “Georgia Southern University was awarded the gift of the Gretsch collection of instruments, a multi-million dollar

Eating out for Thanksgiving? Here are a few top local picks EAT IT AND LIKE IT By Jesse Blanco eatitandlikeit.com We’ve reached that point in the calendar when food begins to take over the landscape. On a lot of fronts. For a lot of people Thanksgiving is the green flag on “eat whatever you want and sort it out later” season. Some of us are a little more measured in our overindulgences, but the temptations will be everywhere beginning next week. We’ve gotten a good amount of inquiries from our followers asking for input on the best places to do Thanksgiving if you don’t want to cook or you are going to someone else’s house and would like to bring something. You’ve got a number of options in and around Savannah, and we don’t have the time or space to list them all. What I am doing is sharing my top picks. You can sort it out from there. We cook at my house every year, but if I weren’t, I’d be making a call to one or more of these Savannah eateries. ERICA DAVIS LOW COUNTRY Erica Davis has some of the best Southern comfort food in the city. If you haven’t tried it yet, shame on you. Maybe Thanksgiving is your perfect opportunity. They are going all out too. You can order turkeys, hams, beef tenderloins or Boston butts. You can choose from 9 different sides (I’m team brussel sprouts). The crab stew is excellent as well. Find them at ericadavislowcountry.com or call (912) 544-5544. COHEN’S RETREAT Ive been a Chef Will Herrington fan for a number of years. He orchestrated a couple of our Fried Chicken and Champagne dinners a while back to rave reviews. He’s a Georgia Boy
who loves to draw on his grandma’s secrets when he gets into the Southern staples. The offerings at Cohen’s aren’t nearly as extensive as what they are offering, for example, at Erica Davis, but I’d bet this stuff is really good as well. Turkeys, a few sides, sauces and desserts. email nikki.davenport@cohensretreat.com or call (912) 355-3336. J THOMAS KITCHEN All Josh and his crew have done is create maybe Wilmington Island’s most popular neighborhood eats restaurant. They bill themselves as downtown food without the downtown price tag. His regulars would agree. Their menu is pretty extensive. Turkey, ham, a ton of sides and sauces. I even saw a French Toast Casserole if you are putting out some breakfast to keep people out of your kitchen. It all helps right? Find the menu at Jthomaskitchen.com or call (912) 349-5411 FORK AND DAGGER LATIN DINER Don’t let the name fool you, Brian and Sky have been doing traditional Thanksgiving sides for years. He tells me this they are streamlining what they do just a little bit but they will still be taking special orders. Of course, they are probably most known for Savannah’s best cheesecakes. Call them at (912) 495-5859. I will also quickly mention if you want an excellent cheesecake and don’t want to all the way downtown Savannah, give Riverboat Pizza a call. They are on Highway 17 near Georgetown. You will not be disappointed. (912) 777-6788. Finally, another quick mention for dining out. A lot of restaurants will be open on Thanksgiving. But I’d make sure Emporium Kitchen at the Perry Lane Hotel, Rhett at The Alida and Fleeting at the Thompson Hotel are all on your short list to consider. They are all doing some special spreads for the holiday.

THE PIRATE’S HOUSE MADE WITH: Light Rum, Dark Rum, Cranberry Juice, Pineapple Juice, Orange Juice, a float of 151 Rum served in a Souvenir Skull Mug We start off with a full shot of Silver Rum and then a full shot of Dark Rum. We use a Castillo and the Goslings Dark Rum. Then it’s equal parts of orange juice, cranberry and pineapple and then you do a 151 Rum floater on top. Finally, garnish it with an orange slice and a cherry. It’s sweet, but definitely strong.
MEET THE MIXOLOGIST: AMANDA BARLOW I’ve lived in the area for about 16 years now. I was born and raised up in Maine and we randomly found our way down here. My favorite part of bartending is the people. I’ve been doing this since I was 19, about 14 years now. I’ve done it in different areas, as well. I’ve done a bar bar, but this has been fun because you meet different people on a daily basis in Savannah.

ART PATROL ‘Noel W Anderson: Heavy is the Crown’ considers Black experience and its legacies between the temporal brackets of two “kings”–1963 when Martin Luther King Jr. presented his iconic “I Have a Dream” speech and 1992, the brutal beating of Rodney King and his subsequent plea “Can we all just get along…?” The printed works, tapestries, and paperworks on view in the exhibition utilize found imagery from various media and archives that are reprocessed by Anderson through assorted means of distortion and manipulation to collectively expose the haunting relationship of black masculine (mis)representation to structures of power. telfair.org Jepson Center for the Arts, 207 West York St.

Savannah is no stranger to Hollywood, and has seen many major movies and TV shows filmed here, but one local group, DOC Savannah, found a new angle and is turning the lens around to focus on filmmakers in Savannah, specifically nonfiction films. “When I came to Savannah in 2015, I was surprised with all of the industry that is here, there really wasn’t a space for independent filmmakers to kind of come together and support each other and help each other out with projects or groups that were focused specifically also in nonfiction filmmaking,” said one of the group’s co-founders Abbey Hoekzema. Hoekzema, a filmmaker herself and a professor of film production at Georgia Southern University, credits Urban Mentoring Academy founder Tre Singleton with inspiring her to reach out and find others who would be interested in a nonfiction filmmaking group. “He would always tell me to speak things into existence, because if you don’t, then nothing will happen. So, I just kind of reached out widely on social media, either to see who else were nonfiction filmmakers in Savannah and I found there were other voices in the dark,” said Hoekzema. The group formed in September, 2018, with Hoekzema, Elizabeth Kaiser, Kyle Maddux-Lawrence and Zachery Page co-founding the organization. At that time, the group was meeting casually at different restaurants and coffee shops, but it started expanding quickly. DOC Savannah aims to serve as a platform for nonfiction filmmakers and the communities of the Coastal Empire and the Lowcountry in Georgia and South Carolina as a resource to inform, entertain, enrich and inspire change through documentary film. It is a group for documentary filmmakers and supporters as well. “I had noticed a lot of filmmakers come here and they film, and then they leave. Also, the stories aren’t about Savannah. They’re always about other places and there are so many stories here. We really want to be a space that can nurture a new group of local nonfiction storytellers,” said Hoekzema. As the group was gaining momentum they started hosting screenings and workshops in addition to the general meetings until the pandemic hit but that didn’t stop them from progressing their mission. They regrouped in 2020 and formed as a nonprofit to grow and better support others in the area that wanted to tell stories about their community. One of their initiatives is DOC Savannah Shorts which consist of micro-shorts that shine a light on groups or individuals in the area. So far, the series includes a piece on Molly Lieberman’s Loop It Up Savannah collecting art supplies for Chatham County youth during the
pandemic and a piece on Pat Gunn about the renaming process of Calhoun Square located in the historic district of downtown Savannah. All of these films can be found on their website. “They have a story that they feel needs to be told and we can help with that. Our members have been documenting a lot and we want to start bringing these different people together to show what we’ve been working on,” said Hoekzema. The group has also screened other documentaries from other filmmakers in the region, especially those with a subject that can be specifically related to Savannah and the South. This helped the group get known to a much wider audience. They hosted their first screening in April, 2021, at the Old Dairy Farm for a documentary by regional filmmaker Bo McGuire called Socks on Fire. After applying for and receiving a PBS POV grant the group hosted two more documentary screenings in October and November. With the use of the grant ,DOC Savannah used a creative writing contest, panel discussions with activist, a mural mosaic workshop and screenings of “The Neutral Ground” and “Pier Kids” to expand Chatham County residents’ understanding of the social issues that affect their communities like how to discuss the Confederate monuments and supporting the LGBTQ+ community. “We selected ‘Neutral Ground’ because it relates to our own Confederate monument at Forsyth, and felt that that was something that set within talking about bringing people together to talk about issues, which is also a cornerstone for that grant,” said Hoekzema. “We picked ‘Pier Kids’ as an additional film in that grant series, mainly to help draw awareness for our LGBT youth in the Savannah area and so the grant allowed us to make education partners.” They partnered with the National Art Honor Society at Savannah Arts Academy for “Pier Kids,” and they are in the process of designing and building a mural inspired by the documentary and two other short films that they would provide instructions for. They partnered with Deep Center for “Neutral Ground,” and the students have been working with the filmmakers and the research team on materials that will be presented later. The group wants to continue to expand on their collaborations and partnerships. “We have very long-term goals, but in the intermediate or the immediate future, we want to start presenting area filmmakers work. We’ve been talking about doing some workshops and we want to expand education and opportunities for high school and college students,” said Hoekzema. DOC Savannah is open for more to join whether you are a filmmaker, educator or just love seeing and discussing nonfiction films. More information can be found about future screenings and programs at docsavannah.org

Savannah Theatre brings Patsy Cline to life By Angie Miller
CONNECT SAVANNAH | NOVEMBER 17-23, 2021
The Savannah Theatre is now playing “Always Patsy Cline,” a dramatic musical experience certain to thrill fans of the iconic singer. Based on the true story of Patsy Cline’s friendship with Louise Seger, a fan who continued a correspondence with her to the end of her life, the Savannah Theatre’s live performance is more than a tribute to the beloved country singer and shows Cline and Seger’s friendship develop over years of correspondence up until Cline’s untimely death. Throughout the show Seger takes the audience on a journey through her memories with the letters they sent to each other accompanied by 27 of Cline’s greatest hits recreated by a live country band. Directing the show is well-known actress and Bluffton area resident, Misty Rowe, who is known for playing the perky, squeaky-voiced blonde on the TV series “Hee Haw” for 19 years and Wendy the carhop on “Happy Days.” In addition to directing, she will be playing the role of Seger. “I’ve been directing the show for 20 years and playing the part of Louise for 24,” Rowe said. “Once ‘Hee Haw’ wrapped up, I was invited to audition for the part of Louise and I did that for four years before being invited to direct the show.” Rowe says Ted Swindley, the creator of “Always Patsy Cline,” mentored her on how to direct it and she’s very proud of the level of authenticity she feels she is able to bring. “Ted taught me everything, from the feelings to recreating the Grand Ole Opry,” she said. “Hee Haws TV studio was once behind the Grand Ole Opry and we shared the same dressing room, the same green room, the same hallways.” In addition to working with the creator of the show, Rowe added that she knew the real Louise and also has experience working with one of Patsy Cline’s past musicians. “A lot of people don’t know this but ‘Hee Haw’ had a band and my drummer on the show, Willie Ackermen, was Patsy Cline’s drummer on the recording of ‘Crazy.’” she said. “And I did in fact know the real Louise. She saw me perform in ‘Always Patsy Cline’ before she passed and she actually wrote me letters, the same way she did with Patsy.” Playing the role of Patsy Cline is Cindy Summers, who has performed the role in a nationwide tour. “I’ve worked with 10 different Patsy singers and they’ve all been wonderful,” Rowe said. “But, Cindy Summers I have performed with the most. She’s toured the nation with the production and we’ve performed it many times from the Tropicana in Atlantic City to the Pacific Light Opera. Every couple of years we get together and we still do it even though we work with other people from time to time. I think the Savannah audience deserves to have a singer that I love and I’ve worked with for so long.” Rowe added that she will also be helping lead the band. “I’m working with musical director Bobby Hamilton who I absolutely love,” she said. “He’s an incredible piano player and an incredible music director. And I’m going to be leading the band at one point! This is a great show filled with music, comedy, dancing, and all sorts of shenanigans! It’s a show that Savannah does not want to miss!” “Always Patsy Cline” is running at the Savannah Theatre through Sun., Nov 21. Gibbons, is “calculated.” Far from having a concept for the album, when Gibbons (the singer/guitarist of ZZ Top), drummer Matt Sorum (of Guns N’ Roses) and bassist Austin Hanks arrived at the studio near Joshua Tree, California, that was pretty much the start of the entire project. “I think the element of surprise is certainly a big piece to this puzzle,” Gibbons said, starting to unfurl the tale of “Hardware” in a recent phone interview. “I received a phone call from Matt Sorum and Austin Hanks. They rang me up from Palm Springs. They said ‘Hey, we’re in our hot rod. We know you’re in Las Vegas. We’re going to scoop you up and squire you over to Joshua Tree. I’m like ‘That’s the desert. There ain’t much out there.’ And they said ‘We’ve found a recording studio that’s willing to open their doors and let us start making loud noise out of it.’ “I was under the impression we were going to take a 30-minute tour,” Gibbons elaborated. “Of course, those 30 minutes turned into 30 days and then we look up and a month had gone by. We walked in and never left. But you know, with blank paper in one hand and a pencil in the other, the only way out of doing nothing is to start doing something.” This spontaneous approach to writing and recording meant “Hardware wouldn’t have a musical theme. Gibbons’ 2015 release “Perfectamundo” brought a Cuban/Latin-influence into Gibbons’ blues-rock sound, while 2018’s “The Big Bad Blues” lived up to its title with its rough and rowdy songs. Still “Hardware” sits comfortably alongside the previous two Gibbons solo albums. His snarling guitars and gruff vocal tones, coupled with the wallop drummer Sorum puts into songs like the driving “She’s On Fire,” the heavy and tuneful “S-G-L-M-BB-R” and the cool and crazy “Stackin’ Bones” (with great vocal touches from guests Larkin Poe) give “Hardware” a rocking grittier-than-desert-sand personality. Whether Gibbons will do a solo tour behind “Hardware” remains to be seen. For the rest of 2021, he’ll be on the road, continuing what might be considered a 50-year anniversary tour for ZZ Top. The tour is continuing despite the death in August of bassist Dusty Hill. The band’s long-time guitar tech, Elwood Francis, has taken over for Hill, and Gibbons and drummer Frank Beard released a statement following the passing of their bandmate of 50-plus years. “We, along with legions of ZZ Top fans around the world, will miss your steadfast presence, your good nature and enduring commitment to providing that monumental bottom to the ‘Top’. We will forever be connected to that ‘Blues Shuffle in C.’ You will be missed greatly, amigo.” The band’s history is chronicled in the recently released documentary, “That Little Ol’ Band from Texas,” during which Gibbons, Hill and Beard take viewers through ZZ Top’s 50-year history. The film, directed by Sam Dunn, hits a lot of highlights, including how the group got its distinctive high-powered bluesy rock sound and their initial commercial breakthrough, moves onto the 1980s, when ZZ Top incorporated synthesizers and sequencers into their sound and hit a commercial grand slam with the 1983 album, “Eliminator,” before reaching into the band’s more recent work. Early hits such as “La Grange,” “Tush” and “Cheap

Sunglasses” helped propel ZZ Top to stardom in the 1970s. The group stayed popular into the early 1980s, when a convergence of factors – the arrival of sequencers and other recording tools, the debut of MTV (which aired the groundbreaking videos for the hit songs “Legs,” Gimme All your Lovin’” and “Sharp Dressed Man”) and some inspired songwriting – made ZZ Top megaplatinum superstars (with Gibbons and Hill debuting their newly grown outsized beards). The makeover in the ZZ Top sound wasn’t planned. “We stumbled into the control room, and here were these new contraptions,” Gibbons said. “We had a habit of ignoring the user’s manual. We just started twisting knobs and somehow that’s what worked.” Indeed, after reaching their commercial peak with “Eliminator” and the sonically similar “Afterburner” (1985) and “Recycler” 1990), ZZ Top have returned to more of a stripped back bluesy guitar sound on their most recent albums -- “La Futura” (2012), “Mescalero” (2003)” and “XXX” (1999). Sales of those albums have fallen off, but ZZ Top remains a touring powerhouse. While ZZ Top will be busy touring through the rest of 2021, the band may find time to finish a new studio album as well. “One of the offshoots of the (“Hardware”) record project process, I was able to funnel some of the song ideas we were coming up with in the desert, all the way from California back to Texas,” Gibbons said. “Somewhere in the flight, these little tidbits ended up in the laps of Frank and Dusty, and they said ‘Hey man, we can start weaving these together with the ZZ Top sound behind it,’ which was the bonus that came my way was I got to leave one studio and tiptoe into the next one.” ZZ Top’s 50th Anniversary tour comes to the Johnny Mercer Theatre at the Savannah Civic Center on Wed., Nov. 17 at 8:00 p.m. Find tickets at ticketmaster.com

Tedeschi Trucks Band ‘Signs 2020 Tour’ pulls into Savannah Derek Trucks and Susan Tedeschi. Photo by Stuart Levine.
By Alan Sculley, Last Word Features
Coming out of the pandemic, there seems to be a real sense of renewal happening with the Tedeschi Trucks Band–which, when fully deployed, includes 12 members. Part of that feeling comes from the return to touring, as a six-person lineup–essentially the core of the Tedeschi Trucks Band–hit the road in June playing drive-in and socially distanced shows. They play Johnny Mercer Theatre on Nov. 20. “We’ve played a bunch of different types of places, like drive-ins, where people have their drive-up spot and then they also like have a pod next to it so they can get up and dance. So that was interesting,” said singer/guitarist Susan Tedeschi in a mid-July phone interview. “And then we’ve had a lot (of shows) where people have their little spaces, like a little pod area and that’s been cool. People seem to like it. They kind of have their own space to dance and do stuff and nobody right on top of you, which is kind of nice. So it’s been good.” What’s also exciting for Tedeschi is the band–which is now touring in the full 12-person configuration–is incorporating a lot of fresh material into the live shows. The band has started playing a few songs from the catalog of the Derek Trucks Band, the group guitarist/songwriter Trucks fronted from 1997 until he and Tedeschi (the couple married in 2001) formed the Tedeschi Trucks Band in 2010, as well as Tedeschi’s five solo studio albums she released from 1995 to 2008. Fans are also getting treated to Tedeschi Trucks Band versions of songs from the classic 1970 Derek & the Dominos album “Layla.” The group has just released the Aug. 24, 2019 performance of the entire “Layla” album from the LOCKN’ Festival. For that one-off show, the full Tedeschi Trucks Band was joined by guitarists Trey Anastasio (of Phish) and Doyle Bramhall II (who plays with Trucks in Eric Clapton’s touring band). Clapton, of course, was the featured member of Derek & the Dominos. “It was really beautiful, and having the whole big band there, too, with the horns and the singers, it really just added so much,” Tedeschi said, looking back at the “Layla performance. “So it was super fun. We had a great time. It was very surreal though, like I remember being very nervous and excited and almost a little overwhelmed just because that stuff doesn’t happen every day. “Really, it was a great experience to work with Trey,” she added, noting she and Trucks hadn’t worked with Anastasio before the “Layla” show. “He’s really a fabulous guitar player, a super sweet guy, and just getting to hear him and Derek and Doyle all play together was just such a treat. You just don’t get
to hear that kind of musicianship all the time.” In addition to releasing “Layla Revisited: Live From LOCKN’,” Tedeschi said plans are set to release the 2015 LOCKN’ performance of the Joe Cocker album “Mad Dogs & Englishmen.” The Tedeschi Trucks Band was joined for that show by the 12 surviving members of that legendary tour, including Leon Russell (musical director for the original “Mad Dogs & Englishmen tour), Dave Mason, Rita Coolidge, Chris Robinson (of the Black Crowes) and Bramhall II. “That is actually a documentary as well,” Tedeschi said of the movie “Learning To Live Together: The Return of Mad Dogs & Englishmen,” which was released on Oct 22. “Yeah, they filmed a lot of that and it’s being made into a movie. It’s really cool.” As if that isn’t enough, a new Tedeschi Trucks Band studio album is also tentatively planned for a January release. The album will be culled from 25 songs written and recorded during the pandemic. For now, Tedeschi said she is really appreciating playing concerts again, and feels the group is growing as a unit after what had been a trying period. In February 2019, keyboardist, flautist and songwriter Kofi Burbridge died from complications related to a 2017 heart attack. Gabe Dixon, who also fronts his own Gabe Dixon Band, stepped in to replace Burbridge, while bassist Brandan Boone took over for Tim Lefebvre, who left the Tedeschi Trucks Band in 2018, joining Trucks, Tedeschi, singer Mike Mattison and drummer Tyler Greenwell in the six-piece core lineup. Drummer J.J. Johnson, Kebbi Williams (saxophone), Erphraim Owens (trumpet), Elizabeth Lea (trombone) and harmony vocalists Mark Rivers and Alecia Chakour round out the full band. “It was very traumatic losing Kofi. And that is not an easy role to play (in the band),” Tedeschi said. “Really moving forward, we feel incredibly blessed with Brandon and Gabe. They really have added so much and they’re such a positive force in the band, and the core is just getting tighter and tighter and we’re learning more about each other and everything from the ‘Layla’ project, everybody loves playing on those tunes, to writing our own stuff to playing old catalog stuff. Everybody is quick learners and really just enjoy doing this again and being able to play live in front of an audience. We don’t take it for granted now after having that time off.” Tedeschi Trucks Band “Signs 2020 Tour” kicks off Sat. Nov 20, 7:30 p.m. at Johnny Mercer Theatre at the Savannah Civic Center.
