FATHER FRANK Serving as the Headmaster of Benedictine Military School (BC), Father Frank Ziemkiewicz has a pedigree that you don’t expect. With a B.S. in mechanical engineering and a Master of Divinity Degree, the retired U.S. Army Colonel served as a chaplain in the US Army during a tour of duty in Afghanistan and Iraq before taking the helm of one of Savannah’s iconic schools. Known for his quiet leadership and sterling reputation, Father Frank has been the face of Benedictine for the past 14 years. As headmaster, he oversees the day to day operations of the 119 year-old Catholic college preparatory school and is easily one of the most recognized men in black: seen on the sidelines of a football game, walking with Alumni in the St. Patrick’s Day Parade or attending community services from funerals, banquets and charity fundraisers to hospital visits HOW DID YOU END UP IN SAVANNAH? While serving as pastor of St. Mary’s Parish in St. Marys, PA, I was asked by our then Archabbot, Douglas (2007) to come to BC as Headmaster. Archabbot Douglas, being aware that I was stationed at Ft. Stewart (1975 – 1978) and therefore familiar with the military and Savannah, saw the assignment as a good fit; I considered myself fortunate to be asked.

WHAT ARE YOUR HOBBIES? I especially enjoy reading history, American, classical, medieval, military and also about nutrition. The older I get, the more my focus is on nutrition. Anyone who knew me during my first 65 years would probably faint if they learned that nutrition was now an interest.

DO YOU HAVE A PERSONAL MANTRA THAT YOU LIVE BY? Wasn’t it Winston Churchill who said, “Never give up, never, never give up.” IS THERE A PERSONAL OR PROFESSIONAL ACCOMPLISHMENT THAT STANDS OUT? Actually, there are several, I had the great good luck of serving as an engineer company commander with the 24th during LTG Rosenblum’s command of the division and serving as Headmaster at BC. In both cases, I had the good fortune of serving with exceptionally committed and motivated people. They taught me the blessings of and the need for teamwork. TELL ME ABOUT THOSE FAMOUS BC400 BILLBOARDS. WE HEARD YOU WANTED A CHRISTMAS MESSAGE OUT THIS YEAR. The BC400 billboards were the brainchild of Karen Robertson of RobMark. She came up with the slogan in 2008 and it gave us a goal which greatly energized us. Our enrollment during the past several years has been just over 400. Our current Christmas billboard, “Christmas Blessings” which features our senior class, has been our way of wishing the Blessings of the Christmas Season to the Savannah Community and of thanking the community for 120 years of support. BC views itself as “A school with a soul on a mission” and it is that soul that calls us to thank and serve the Savannah Community.

WHAT DRIVES YOU TO LEAD YOUNG MEN AND THE CLERGY? For me, it is critical that we (faculty and monks) offer to our students, an environment that will not only offer them the means to progress to the next level of their learning, but also instill within them an understanding that they are a part of a tradition that includes not only the wisdom of the Bible but also that of the Classical world and other traditions. As our students progress into their adult years, our prayer and hope is that they carry that open mindedness and critical thinking into the lives of their family’s and professional careers.

WHO IS SOMEONE YOU ADMIRE? First of all, my parents. They were the children of immigrants and poster children of the “Greatest Generation.” They lived to realize the American dream, one could not ask for better role models. Additionally, I had the great experience of coming to Ft. Stewart in 1975 as Lt. Gen. Donald Rosenblum (then a Brigadier General) was creating the 24th Infantry Division, now the 3rd Infantry Division. LTG Rosenblum set a standard of professionalism that has inspired me since.

In recognition of National Homelessness Awareness Month in November, Oliver Maner LLP, a leading law firm in Savannah, issued a challenge to the community to raise supplies and support for Union Mission’s newest project, Parker’s House: A Home For Women. Oliver Maner attorneys Amelia Stevens and Victoria Nease led the efforts and the law firm’s office is overflowing with the results of the generosity of the Savannah community. Representatives of Oliver Maner presented the donations collected during the charity drive at their downtown offices on Dec. 8 and loaded up Union Mission’s van. The items, ranging from soap and toothpaste to sheets and blankets, will stock the shelves of the program for unaccompanied homeless women, set to launch in early 2022.

“We want to thank the Savannah community for their incredible generosity. We expected a strong response, but what happened exceeded our expectations,” Stevens said. “We had to continue to make room in our storage area to accommodate all of the items.” Once completed, Parker’s House: A Home For Women will be the only facility along the I-95 corridor from Florida to South Carolina dedicated solely to unaccompanied women experiencing homelessness. Union Mission provides basic human needs for the residents, including food, clothing, transportation, access to mental healthcare, employment support and more. GET READY FOR

SNOW MUCH FUN AT 2021 TRUSTEES’ GARDEN CHRISTMAS FESTIVAL

Christmas Festival at Trustees’ Garden forecast is 100% chance of snow and fun! While waiting for the container ships to deliver a holiday gift you may not even remember ordering, why not come out for the second annual Christmas Festival at the Trustees’ Garden and support local artists, crafters, food vendors, and spend a day of a seasonal cheer and celebration with 100 percent chance of snow? The event promises to be a safe, fun event filled with activities for all ages. It will feature a thriving marketplace, allowing local businesses to connect with the community and feature their products to holiday shoppers.

Kathy Kurazawa is spearheading the event for Trustees’ Garden and she even came out of retirement to help. “I worked for Mr. (Charles H.) Morris for 34 years and worked on the first winter festival in 2019,” Kurazawa said. “Just like everything else in our lives, COVID changed events, so we weren’t able to hold it last year. However, we’re thrilled to be able to bring this lively event to the community again this year.” Morris, the Garden’s benefactor, chimed in: “The whole idea with this [festival] was to get families and children together over the holidays, and particularly around Christmastime because the kids are home from school and families are often looking for stuff to do.” The first event was a great success and the organizers are hoping for an even better turnout in 2021. “The first one… I think we had about 1,700 people come,” Mr. Morris said. “We had snow and sledding.” He broke into a laugh and added, “There were almost more

adults going on the sled run… it was a lot of fun to see it.” The main attraction, of course, is the snow. Snow machines will grind 60 tons of ice to a fine white powder and pump it across the slight incline behind Kehoe Ironworks. “Folks will go down the slide on saucers,” Kurazawa said. “Come early because the weather is supposed to be nice and we’re sure to have some slush toward the end of the day.” There wil also be a bounce-house, a rock wall to climb, obstacle courses, a tumbling area, a trackless train—for small children five and under—as well as other expected event amenities such as a nursing tent. Masks are optional, as it is 100 percent outdoors, but no outside food is allowed. “Security will wand folks as they enter, do bag checks, and take a quick temperature check,” Kurazawa said. “The Trustees’ Garden is such a beautiful atmosphere and one of the biggest outdoor event and green spaces in

success.” Kurazawa agreed: “I’m very proud of what we have organized. It’s going to be a great family day to get out and see people, get ready for the season, support local businesses, and just have fun. I was more than happy to come out of retirement to make this happen.” Mr. Morris is already looking forward to 2022 and further. “We’re going to be doing more of these kinds of things,” he said. “We want to help get people together. I think it’s so important to know your neighbor(s) and your friends. So often, we get busy with our careers, life, and families that we don’t really have a chance to visit with each other enough. We hope this event helps change that.” The Christmas Festival goes down Saturday, Dec. 18 from 10 a.m. through 6 p.m. at the historic Kehoe Ironworks, 660 E. Broughton St. Tickets are $20 if purchased ahead of the event and $25 at the door the day of the event. Tickets can be purchased by searching eventbrite.com For information on the coloring contest, visit connectsavannah.com or look for the entry in this week’s edition of Connect Savannah.

Savannah outside of Forsyth Park. It’s the perfect spot for coming out to see friends and neighbors and to experience the spirit of the season.” As for vendors, Kurazawa said they expect plenty of options for attendees. “We have very talented and creative local artists, crafters, and cookie vendors, to name a few. The Savannah Ghost Pirates [the new ECHL hockey team] will have a table with information about the upcoming season.” Chazito’s and Leopold’s will have food available for sale. “We’ll have beer, water, and hot chocolate stations, as well,” Kurazawa said. “We also have a coloring contest for kids and will be showcasing the winners at the Kehoe Center.” Seasonal music will be piped throughout the location to get into the holiday mood. And if that’s not enough, Santa and Mrs. Claus will be appearing from 10 a.m. through 3 p.m. and available for pictures with kids. (No pets, please.) Mr. Morris is hopeful event will meet expectations: “I think this will even be more successful, so I’m excited about it. I just think people are looking for things to do. Kids are out of school and they’re just hanging out, at least, that’s what people tell us, so I hope it’ll be a big

TILLY

AGE: ONE YEAR COLORS: WHITE AND BROWN/RUST WEIGHT: MEDIUM (25 - 50 LBS) If you’re looking for a sweet, energetic dog, Tilly could be your girl. This girl really is as sweet as can be, and she’s got lots of puppy energy! While she gets along with other dogs we’ve learned she’s a little too overly interested in cats, so no felines for this girl. In true Hound fashion, she loves long, sniffy walks. A big, fenced in yard will be required so she has room to explore without sniffing her way right out of the yard while she investigates everything. Tilly is crate trained, potty-trained and knows how to use a doggy door. Even though Tilly can be a crazy puppy, she is quick to learn and will also calm down and snuggle when she gets tired. And she loves her toys – especially stuffed animals she can toss around. Tilly will need a person or family that understands this puppy energy, and that is willing to take the time to work with her. We feel that with patience and devotion, Tilly will grow into a wonderful family dog.

The die-hard beer drinkers in this town know it to be true. When you compare Savannah to other cities of similar size and demographics around the South, it is pretty obvious that Savannah’s brewery scene is a couple of steps behind.

The quality is there, depending on where you visit, but the volume just isn’t where it should be. Maybe “could be” is a better way to phrase it. Jeremy Hammons has known this for a while. It is why his dream to open his own brewery in Savannah is one step closer to reality. He’s officially got the space to do it. Jeremy is a familiar face on the beer scene here. He’s spent most of the last 7 years learning the ropes and working at Southbound Brewing Company. He joined them shortly after they opened. Later, he moved over to help get the very popular Hop Atomica off and running. “I was a bartender when I went there.” he says, proud of the fact that he is very well versed in volume beer production without having started as a home brewer

EAT IT & LIKE IT (CONT.) like so many others do. Now he’s ready to do his own thing. So, you are dying to know where, right? 120 East 42nd Street, directly behind Ardsley Station at Victory Drive and Drayton streets. If you’ve visited Ardsley Station, you’ve undoubtedly parked in the fenced-in lot across 42nd street. That will soon be home to about 15 or so spaces for the brand new brewery. The Underdog Brewing Company. Jeremy says he thinks sitting across the road from Ardsley Station is a perfect way for both spots to ‘feed off of each other.’ “If someone is coming in here looking for a nice glass of wine or food along the lines of what they do? We can send them across the street.” he says. “But if someone just wants a few beers and munchies, they can send them our way.” That whole block is going to change very quickly. Jeremy is planning a huge bar inside with roughly 30 taps. There are also plans for a beer garden outside as well. Roughly 18 parking spaces is going to make this spot incredibly attractive. Count on it. Food? Yes, there will be some. Nothing dramatic, he says. Pretzels, maybe sandwiches. Simple beer drinking eats. He tells me this ‘perfect rectangle’ of a space (5,000 square feet) is ideal to dress up pretty quickly. There is very little construction that needs to be done. Installation of all of the fun stuff will begin just after the first of the year. Jeremy expects to have the space ready to go early Summer 2022.

You’ve got four ounces of a dry wine. In this particular one I used a Pinot Noir. Any wine that’s going bad, you can always repurpose the wine. The life is still in the wine. I recommend anything dry, like a merlot or anything like that. Something fun and something spicy. Then I used the Diplomático Mantuano Rum, it’s a dark sipping rum but it’s delicious. We do an ounce and a half of the rum. Then you can do an ounce of the Pumpkin Spice Shrub. All of those fun Fall and Winter spice are the flavor profiles you’ll get with the drink. Cloves, nutmeg, and cinnamon spices. I was thinking about a malt wine because it’s seasonal and then put the spiced shrub with the wine.

Grassroots film group, CinemaSavannah returns Young Savannah filmmaker shines light on Black pride and to in-person screenings FILM

impact through Black voices

. CONNECT SAVANNAH | DECEMBER 15-21, 2021

By Kareem McMichael

“Golden Hour,” a film by director and producer DeVon Moore, is a shortdocumentary that explores the pride of being Black and provides the perspectives of young Black Americans while confronting the stresses and troubles facing their community and finding hope in healing their wounds. “Golden Hour” is Moore’s fifth film. It was accepted into the 2021 IGen Film Festival. He recalled there were a lot of transitions happening that led to creating this project. “I think just about everybody knows what happened in the summer 2020, and that’s something that was super traumatic and stressful for our community,” said Moore. “On top of that, you had a pandemic. On top of that, you have the political things going and my friends and I were transitioning from high school to college and moving to Atlanta.” Moore graduated from Savannah Arts Academy in 2020 and is currently attending Georgia State University in Atlanta as a film & media major with a minor in entrepreneurship. It was while in Atlanta in early 2021 Moore and his friends discussed taking a trip to Tybee Island just for a fun beach day but this gave him a different idea. “I know a couple of times when on break we would come home to Savannah and we would go to Tybee and the beach,” he said. “One of those times was like my first time intentionally going to see a sunrise ever. It was something like super crazy, not even explainable because it’s a different experience.” This inspired him with the idea to shoot a film that would explore Black pride and have his friends elaborate on different subjects related to the Black experience during the “golden hour” on the beach. A quote by Gil Scott-Heron (“The thing that is going to change people is something you can’t capture on film”) stood out to Moore and became one of the themes and taglines of the film since with his film he wanted to capture something that would change people. “The questions were probably the hardest thing ever because I’ve not done many documentaries,” said Moore. “Also, I was doing group interviews and found that some people were soft spoken and not as bold as other people so I ended up interviewing some people individually because I wanted people to answer freely and honestly.” Moore and the interviewees spent a good amount of time planning and going through the questions. With a series of questions, he engaged the interviewees, young men and woman, through various different subjects. Subjects pointed at uplifting the community and self-love as Moore expressed he didn’t want “another traumatic film for our community.” Rap Game Will, a local Savannah rapper

and activist, opens up the documentary with a voiceover saying, “We’re a young, up-and-coming rapper. The activists in the community of Savannah, Georgia. This is our story, our culture. We give it to you unapologetically.” He elaborates more before the first question appears on the screen. That question is “What does black pride mean to you?” Person after person spoke about different things that meant black pride to them ranging from hair styles, loving one’s complexation, loving Black history, and embracing many aspects of their culture and the interviewees didn’t shy away from some hard hitting talking points, like when asked if there ever was a time they were embarrassed to be black and how they overcame that experience. Cristen Williams answered, “I remember telling my mother that I wanted to have a light skinned child because light skin is seen as beautiful or the standard. My mom kind of looked at me like, Kristen, that’s not okay. That’s not something that you want to implement in your life or to praise or anything because you’re beautiful the way that you are. Your dark skin is beautiful. So, the way that I overcame that is I have to learn how to love myself.” Another interesting response came to the question “What impact have Black men and women made on you?” Most responded giving thanks and gratitude to a mother or father or sibling and other important Black figures in their lives that have been a positive role model to them but one response also turned insight on certain stereotypes. “I do think that there are some stereotypes within the black community about black men that aren’t necessarily untrue. I feel like black men, instead of getting upset at the stereotype, they should do something to change them,” said Riche Williams. “... I don’t want to say that impacts me in that way, but I just feel like they should do something to change that so that the stereotype isn’t true.” The piece closed with another strong narrated message from Rap Game Will. In part, he said, “Man, what if 40 million black babies knew they came from Kings and Queens? What if they knew it was more to our hopes and dreams? Black pride is about our solidarity and culture is something they can never take from us because we are culture. Black pride.” For Moore, Black pride mean putting the people around your community around you. “Putting them on that platform to allow them to tell their stories, help each other, heal each other, allow each other to feel and be proud of the nooks and crannies the ups and downs, everything that we go through as a community. I feel like that’s what Black Pride is about,” he said. “Golden Hour” can be viewed online on Moore’s YouTube page, DeVon’s Films, and for more info, check out his Instagram page @ devonthedirector.

For years CinemaSavannah has been bringing interesting foreign, arthouse, and independent films to film fans in the Savannah area. Since 2003, the organization have hosted screenings at numerous locations including the Muse Arts Warehouse and Jewish Education Alliance, before finding a home at the Savannah Cultural Center, bringing mostly new releases that would not usually play in local commercial theaters. Even during the pandemic founder and director of CinemaSavannah, Tomasz Warchol made it possible to offer some screenings virtually but that proved to be a struggle at times. “I offered some virtual screenings for the first few months but then gave up due to low numbers. I am glad it’s just my business hobby, not my day job,” said Warchol. Now, nearly two years after their last live screening, they are back with in-person screenings. “We returned to in-person indoor screenings in November through partnership with Gingerbread House, our new venue where we hope to continue showing two films a month,” said Warchol. The Gingerbread House is owned by Jennifer Jenkins, who also owns Foxy Loxy. Warchol expressed how beneficial this new partnership is because of the large social media presence Jenkins has, hoping this will introduce CinemaSavannah to a more diverse audience. “On December 16 we are returning to the Savannah Cultural Arts Center, our primary venue with a screening of First Cow. We will continue with alternating Fridays starting in January,” said Warchol. “First Cow” is a drama film directed by Kelly Reichardt, from a screenplay by Reichardt and Jonathan Raymond based on Raymond’s novel “The Half Life.” “Kelly Reichardt’s new and arguably greatest film was frequently named the best film of 2020. We are very happy to show this masterpiece on the big screen and celebrate our return to in-person screenings,” said Warchol. The film follows two travelers, on the run from a band of vengeful hunters in the 1820s Northwest, dream of striking it rich but their tenuous plan to make their fortune on the frontier comes to rely on the secret use of a landowner’s prized dairy cow. The film is the winner of 24 critics’, numerous festival awards and 124 nominations. See the film on Thursday, December at 7 p.m. at the Savannah Cultural Arts Center. The box office opens at 6 and tickets are $10, the group said cash is preferred. It is encouraged to be fully vaccinated if you are attending and mask are advised for those who do attend. Tickets are not sold in advance and seating will be capped at 60% capacity. TELFAIR MUSEUMS RECENT ACQUISITION: SAVANNAH PHOTOGRAPHS BY EDGERTON CHESTER GARVIN Three early twentieth century photographs by Edgerton Chester Garvin (American, 1881-1950) recently acquired by Telfair provide a window on a South in transition, when Savannah was just beginning to build a community of visual artists. Before the painting-oriented Savannah Art Club formed in 1920, and just after the Savannah Camera Club disbanded after more than a decade of exhibiting photography in 1909, a young engineer named Edgerton Garvin began making photographs in Savannah and its environs. Like the Camera Club members before him, Garvin was a talented amateur who did not pursue photography full-time. Garvin’s work records a changing South from public displays of modern technology to vestiges of a history of human exploitation. His small, well composed images recorded Savannah’s Grand Prize Races, an international event, in 1910, and the demonstration flight of a biplane in Augusta. --Harry DeLorme, Director of Education and Senior Curator, Telfair Museums

STORIES OF KWANZAA

SAAM hosts a visual storytelling workshop in preparation for Kwanzaa By Brandy Simpkins

It’s that time of year again: seven principles, seven days and a lot of stories, Kwanzaa’s best is on display in Savannah. In preparation for the Seven Days of Kwanzaa holiday, Savannah African Art Museum (SAAM) will host an Interactive Kwanzaa Visual Storytelling workshop on December 18. Back by popular demand, writer, artist and actress Kat Robertson will facilitate the workshop. It will take place in the secondfloor multi-purpose room of SAAM’s Terracotta Gallery at 201 East 37th Street. The educational, hands-on workshop will consist of a short presentation explaining what Kwanzaa is, why it is celebrated, and its connection to Africa. There will be a

presentation on the Nguzo Saba (Swahili), commonly known as the Seven Principles of Kwanzaa, of which each has its own individual day of recognition during the week of celebration. During the second portion of the workshop, participants will be asked to identify one of the seven principles of Kwanzaa or perhaps a personal principle that resonates with them. They will then create a candle representing that principle. After everyone is done molding their creation, Robertson will take each one and use it to cultivate a collective visual story. “It starts out as an individual concept then it’s brought together for the community,” Education & Community Outreach Liaison Lisa Jackson said. “It’s a very good exercise that brings people together.” “Bringing people together” is one of the many things Kwanzaa is about. Celebrated from Dec. 26 to Jan. 1, Kwanzaa is an African American and Pan-African celebration based on the agricultural harvest

in 1966 by activist Africana studies professor and author Dr. Maulana Karenga. Karenga purposefully introduced the Fresh Fruits celebrations of Africa to African American descendants, many of which had forgotten or lost their original customs and traditions due to the harsh realities of the Trans-Atlantic Slave Trade. Now, the pan-African holiday is acknowledged and celebrated across the world. “I was fortunate enough to have attended a Kwanzaa celebration that Dr. Maulana Karenga attended every year in Brooklyn, NY,” Jackson shared. “He would speak and they would have different Kwanzaa workshops, so every year I think about what parts of that I can bring to the African Art Museum.” Jackson said that just about anything that relates to Africa can be made into a workshop per Savannah African Art Museum’s mission to provide engaging experiences that educate and start conversations about the power, diversity, and spirituality of African art. This Saturday’s Kwanzaa workshop is in alignment with that mission. “This storytelling experience is a part of Kwanzaa because Kwanzaa is a celebration of community, family, and unity,” Jackson said. “Storytelling is a cultural thing that many people do around the world, and for Africans it is very important because in storytelling we pass on history, information from the ancestors, codes of behaviors and we pass on how we are to connect to one another.” This Interactive Kwanzaa Visual Storytelling workshop will close out SAAM’s bi-monthly workshops for 2021, and Jackson said she’s already thinking of what the museum will educate the community about in 2022. “Africa is in us, as Africa is the beginning of civilization,” Jackson said. “If we don’t know who we are and what our past was, we don’t know how to move forward.” Registration through eventbrite.com is required. Attendees are asked to be aware that there is no wheelchair accessibility for the workshop.

HOLIDAY ALBUM GUIDE 2021 By Alan Sculley

It’s been a particularly prolific year for holiday albums – so much so that I’ll stop the introduction here to save space and just get right to reviewing the albums themselves. THE HEADLINERS:

#EXPERIENCEVICTORY

THE BEST: MORGAN JAMES: “A Very Magnetic Christmas” – Originals like “I Wanna Know” and “Long As I Got You” are standouts, but James also absolutely transforms “Do You Hear What I Hear,” “O Holy Night” and other standards into her signature sound that’s bluesy and soulful with some jazzy swing. And oh yes, she sings the hell out of these songs. This is my pick for best 2021 Christmas album.

KELLY CLARKSON: “When Christmas Comes Around…” – Clarkson’s second holiday album opens with a real show stopper – “Merry Christmas Baby” (one of seven Clarkson co-writes on the album, not the familiar R&B standard) that disguises some thorny emotions within a richly soulful melody that shows why Clarkson’s singing wowed judges all those years ago on “American Idol.” The song signals that “When Christmas Comes Around…” is anything but the typical holiday album. Clarkson has quipped that it’s a breakup holiday album (she, of course, recently

its own musical character. And of course, the Pistol Annies bring the sass and humor that has helped define their three excellent nonholiday albums, but there’s also tenderness and emotional depth on songs like “The Only Thing I Wanted” and “Believing.”

CITIZEN COPE

PISTOL ANNIES: “Hell of a Holiday” – Miranda Lambert, Ashley Monroe and Angaleena Presley put their stamp on the holidays with their distinctive blend of country, rock, soul and even a little gospel. Ten of the 13 songs on “Hell of a Holiday” are originals, which in itself gives the album

NORAH JONES: “I Dream of Christmas” – Jones’ first holiday foray is the relaxed effort one would expect. But that doesn’t mean it’s boring. On “White Christmas,” for instance, her sprightly piano parts put some fizz into the song. And while Jones slows the already ambling tempo of “Christmas Don’t Be Late” (yes, the song by Alvin and the Chipmunks), she gives the song some punch with some rather bold horn parts. In addition to such familiar tunes, “I Dream of Christmas” features five originals, and they provide some highlights on this winter warmer of a holiday album.

went through a highly publicized divorce), and that describes songs like light-hearted “Christmas Isn’t Canceled (Just You)” or the more serious big ballad “Merry Christmas (To The One I Used To Know)” – two of the other strong originals on the album. But Clarkson also includes some familiar upbeat material, such as “Rockin’ Around The Christmas Tree,” “Santa Baby” and “Jingle Bell Rock.” Whatever the songs, they often come with full orchestration and plenty of studio polish, yet don’t sound overproduced. Now with two stellar holiday albums to her credit, fans will be ready whenever another Clarkson Christmas album comes around again.

AMANDA SHIRES: “For Christmas” – The talented songwriter/violinist delivers one of the year’s best holiday albums. “For Christmas” encompasses pop, soul, rock and folk with effortlessly melodic (mostly) original tunes and creative subject matter (“Gone For Christmas” and “A Real Tree This Year” being prime examples).

21

HOLIDAY ALBUM GUIDE (CONT.) Came Upon A Midnight Clear” show Wariner needs little more than his acoustic guitar to make a song sing. STEVE PERRY: “The Season” – Perry’s voice sounds a bit grainier on “The Season” than it did during his days fronting Journey, as he croons eight Christmas classics. But it’s the added backing vocals on “I’ll Be Home For Christmas,” the Motown-ish treatment of “Santa Claus Is Coming To Town” and the playful reworking of “Silver Bells” that elevate this album.

PAUL KELLY: “Paul Kelly’s Christmas Train” – The year’s most ambitious holiday album belongs to the accomplished songwriter Paul Kelly, who assembled 22 songs from across centuries and countries, some familiar, some obscure, to create a holiday album that’s charming, reverential to irreverent, very diverse and entertaining.

OTHER WORTHY RELEASES: JOSH TURNER: “King Size Manger” – Turner keeps it country, while being plenty creative with song arrangements on “King Size Manger.” A prime example is “Angels We Have Heard On High,” with its surprisingly propulsive backbeat and frisky guitars. G. LOVE: “Coming Back Home For Christmas” – Love brings his unique mix of blues, rap, soul and rock to 10 original holiday songs that set a rootsy, good-time mood on this refreshing holiday album.

. CONNECT SAVANNAH | DECEMBER 15-21, 2021

HISS GOLDEN MESSENGER: “O Come All Ye Faithful” – Singer/songwriter M.C. Taylor has crafted an inventive, introspective and soulful, folk-centric holiday album that includes three fine original songs, three reinvented standards and inspired covers of songs by Creedence Clearwater Revival, Spiritualized and Woody Guthrie.

22

BRIAN FALLON: “Night Divine” – The Gaslight Anthem frontman goes spare and largely acoustic as he effectively reshapes a set of well chosen religious Christmas standards to fit an intimate setting that feels authentic and emotional. BRETT ELDREDGE: “Mr. Christmas” – The high point on Eldredge’s second Christmas album is the title song, an original that starts out slinky and builds into a jazzy romp. He sticks to the big band formula of his first holiday offering, 2016’s “Glow,” and with some smart arrangements and his warm baritone, Eldredge might give Michael Buble a run for his money as music’s leading Sinatra-esque Christmas crooner. STEVE WARINER: “Feels Like Christmas Time” – The country singer/songwriter’s new holiday album is largely a low-key and highly successful affair, as his version of “Silent Night,” the rustic original “Christmas In Your Arms” and instrumental take on “It

NEW FOUND GLORY: “December’s Here” – The veteran band puts some cheery hooks into the season with 10 originals that offer a humorous and fond look at the Christmas holidays. The songs lean more to the pop side of New Found Glory’s pop-punk sound, but they’re plenty energetic and catchy. PAUL GILBERT: “TWAS” – Guitar and rock music fans will find plenty to like in “TWAS,” as Gilbert shows his considerable playing skills on 11 Christmas standards and two original songs. VITAMIN STRING QUARTET: “It Feels Like Christmas” – Looking for a little forwardlooking classical? There’s plenty to like about VSQ’s instrumental holiday album, “It Feels Like Christmas.” KAT EDMONSON: “Holiday Swingin’ (A Kat Edmonson Christmas Vol. 1)” – With these jazzy piano-based arrangements, Edmonson brings plenty of swing and pep to this collection of holiday standards. That said, her mousy vocal tune may not be for everyone. ORLEANS: “New Star Shining” – The band famous for songs like “Dance With Me” and “Still The One” bring their familiar folktinged, harmony-laden brand of pop to a set of appealing original holiday songs and a couple of covers. WE BANJO 3: “A Winter Wonderful” – The string band from Ireland plucks and bows their way through a mix of holiday standards (they’re OK) and originals (they’re better, with “Christmas In Prison” taking this year’s prize for most creative holiday subject matter). TYLER SHAW: “A Tyler Shaw Christmas” – The Canadian pop singer’s holiday album boasts a standout original, “Christmas In Your Eyes” (and a couple of other enjoyable originals), while he also brings some flair to the standards he chose for this outing. ALEJANDRO FUENTES: “Soulful Christmas” –More pop than soul, this is a buoyant and enjoyable holiday effort.

MISSED THE CUT: Here are some other albums that, while not total fails, don’t jingle the bells: Steve Holy: “A Christmas To Remember”; Brett Young: “Brett Young & Friends Sing The Christmas Classics”; Pentatonix: “Evergreen”; Manchester Orchestra: “Christmas Songs Vol. 1.”
