COMMUNITY INTRODUCTIONS

MEET JUSTIN WEST OF LEAGUE OF BRAWN For the past three years, Justin West, the founder of League of Brawn and his powerful league of men have stepped into the community to lead by example. Whether they are registering voters, hosting block parties to build community or delivering new bikes and toys to families in need, this “benevolent brotherhood,” as they refer to themselves works to continuously display what leadership should look like. TELL US MORE ABOUT YOU AND YOUR BACKGROUND. I’m a Mississippi native. This is where I was instilled with southern charm and hospitality. It was here that I learned the concept of having a community that poured into the children and each other in an effort to increase its chances of success. WHAT LED TO THE LEAGUE OF BRAWN BEING FORMED? LOB was formed because there are so many men that struggle with life. These struggles tend to lead to things like alcoholism, womanizing, drug addiction, and the most common is depression. I wanted to provide a service that created a non-judgmental atmosphere where men could discuss the internal struggles they may face daily. YOUR SLOGAN “IRON SHARPENS IRON - MEN SHARPEN MEN” WHAT DOES THAT MEAN? The best way to grow and overcome any obstacle is with a strong supporting cast assisting you along the way. Just as Iron sharpens Iron, Men Sharpen Men. WHO ARE THE MEN YOU CALL THE BENEVOLENT BROTHERHOOD? These men are teachers, business owners, entrepreneurs, pastors, blue collar workers etc. Any man that wants development and is willing to be a champion of change. THIS CHRISTMAS, WHAT WILL LEAGUE OF BRAWN BE DOING IN THE COMMUNITY? The holiday season is a stressful time for many and want to lessen that stress. We are hosting our 3rd annual bike and toy drive and as in the year prior, we are exceeding our last year’s total, which was close to 300 bikes. The Bike and Toy Drive is our signature event. The personal fulfillment and joy that we receive from this amazing endeavor is immeasurable. It enables us to serve our community by not only reaching adults, but the children. WHO HELPS WITH YOUR CONTRIBUTIONS, HOW CAN WE DONATE AND HOW CAN PEOPLE JOIN? It truly takes a village! We’re so grateful to have the assistance of the community, our yearly sponsors which include but are not limited to organizations such as Dynacraft, Pacific Cycle, Savannah Toyota, Chatham Parkway Toyota, Taylor Hyundai, Boomys etc. There are also a plethora of individual sponsors who assist and donate yearly. The number of individuals is too many to name individually but we deeply appreciate them also. If you want to join us or volunteer - check out our website leagueofbrawndcm.org

“Affordable, affordable, affordable,” was Mayor Van Johnson’s refrain as he spoke before the facade of Pulaski House, home of SCAD SERVE’s first affordable housing initiative in Savannah, The Lofts on Pulaski. SCAD reps gave the public a first glimpse into new workforce housing building Tuesday, which will be located at 328 Barnard St. According to SCAD SERVE Director Scott Linzey, the building’s rent prices have been regulated to be affordable based on the Housing and Urban Development (HUD) guidelines for 2022. The renovation of SCAD’s historic first residence hall, Pulaski House aligns with the city’s initiative to increase availability of affordable housing in historic downtown. The creation of The Lofts on Pulaski is part of the university’s SCAD SERVE initiative, which was designed to “empower the SCAD community to listen to the needs of its neighbors and local leaders and to implement meaningful design solutions that improve quality of life,’ according to officials. “It helps people that are making 15 to 20 dollars (an hour) to afford to live, to be able to exist,” said Johnson. “This is an excellent step in the right direction, and I want to give credit where it’s due: SCAD did this thing.” Apartments in the 22-unit dwelling will be available to rent for workers in the broadly-defined service industry. According to a press release, residents will begin to move in by January 2022. The school expects applicants soon. SCAD has enlisted Savannah-based property management firm Mia Madison to oversee the Lofts on Pulaski. The firm will handle tenant applications, vetting and selection based on HUD guidelines. The building has 14 studio apartments, seven two-story loft apartments, and one two-bedroom apartment. Each has a full kitchen, an HVAC system and LED lighting. Residents will also have access to all SCAD parking lots. According to Linzey, each unit sits at or below the Savannah-specific HUD 2022 guidelines. Studio units cost $775, loft units cost $995, and the two-bedroom unit costs $1065. Electric, sewage and water will be included in the rent. The apartment will

have a pay-per-use laundry facility on the ground floor. “Our essential workers aren’t getting second-class accommodations here,” said SCAD President Paula Wallace. “They’re getting the best SCAD style just as they deserve.” “Workforce housing is one of Savannah’s most challenging concerns, and the Lofts on Pulaski jump-starts a new era that redefines excellence, accessibility, and affordability. Every element of these beautiful lofts — from their functional yet refined design to their location in the heart of Savannah — embodies SCAD’s mission, vision, and values,” added Wallace. The Pulaski House was built in 1915 to house the Savannah Jewish Education Alliance. SCAD purchased the property in 1990. The school then converted it into its first residence hall. In March 2021, SCAD officials announced the school would convert Pulaski Hall from a residence hall to an affordable apartment building. The SCAD Design Group designed the units, and in less than a year, renovations finished. “SCAD heard the call from the city, and nine months later, here we are ready for tenants to move in,” said Linzey. “We’re excited to be able to answer that call and look forward to being able to continue to contribute to the city of Savannah.” In July 2020, Mayor Johnson and city Aldermen organized the Housing Savannah Taskforce to address the city’s affordable housing crisis, which he said has lurked beneath Savannah’s economic explosion. According to HUD, affordable housing costs just 30 percent or less of a household’s annual income. While the unveiling highlighted the apartment’s trim price tag, Mayor Johnson lauded the property’s other quality: location, location, location. Pulaski Square sits just beneath Liberty St., centrally located to where much of Savannah’s service industry lies. “People who work downtown can now live downtown,” Johnson said. “Mothers with children won’t have to travel inordinate amounts of time to be able to get from to to-and-fro, and they have the ability to enjoy what many people enjoy, a piece of Savannah’s beautiful pristine downtown.” For more information on SCAD SERVE and the Lofts on Pulaski, visit scad.edu/scadserve To view photos of The Lofts on Pulaski please find this story on connectsavannah.com

PETS OF THE WEEK Each week, we will highlight pets available for adoption from local rescue organizations. In December, we are featuring Coastal Pet Rescue.

MIA

AGE: 6 YEARS COLORS: BROWN AND WHITE WEIGHT: LARGE (50 TO 75 LBS)

‘TIS THE SEASON TO BE INSURED

This six-year-old Heinz 57 seeks a reassuring companion who can remind her how to “dog” again. Give her a little time and she’ll give you kisses and her backside so you can give it a good scratch. While she seems to get along with her male doggie friends, she doesn’t like to share her space with other female dogs – or cats. Curious and sweet, Mia is a member of the “Clean Kennel Club,” enjoys walks (and is a good leash walker), a good belly rub, and playing ball. Mia would love nothing more than a place where she and her toys can feel safe and loved.

By: Chris Templeton ‘Tis the Holiday season for family gatherings, cheerful decorations, delicious foods, and a grateful heart. At Morris & Templeton Insurance we understand that there’s no place like home for the holidays, and we want to help ensure that! We are here to make sure you can enjoy the festivities without a worry in the world.

Founded in February 2003, Coastal Pet Rescue changes the lives of homeless pets in Chatham, Bryan and Effingham Counties through its foster home program and small capacity shelter, Camp Pawsawhile Retreat.

A Christmas classic, “National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation”, takes holiday disasters to an extreme. You’ve probably laughed as the mishaps pile up and the Griswold family can’t catch a break. In reality, Christmas catastrophes are all too common and they are no laughing matter. One of the main reasons for the spike in claims during the holidays are fires. Christmas trees, candles and cooking large family meals seem to be the culprits for the 15% increase in fire claims during the holidays. Fortunately, standard homeowners insurance policies cover damage due to fires. But this is your time to check in! Look over your insurance policy limits, in the event that you’re

Another unfortunate statistic to be made aware of is the nearly 7% increase in burglaries and theft claims during the holiday season. Make sure your gifts are out of sight, your deliveries aren’t left unattended on your doorstep, your doors are locked, and your lights are on to help deter unwanted guests. Also, in our digital first world make sure not to share too many details about your travel plans on social media. Santa isn’t the only one that’s always watching! If the unexpected happens, make sure you are covered. Most homeowner’s insurance policies provide coverage for possessions at 50 to 70 percent of the dwelling’s coverage. So, if your home is insured for $500,000, you’ll have $250,000 to $350,000 worth of coverage for your belongings. There are, however, limits on luxury items so this is the time to touch base with your insurance agent. At Morris & Templeton Insurance we want to be a part of your most wonderful time of the year! We understand that accidents happen, especially with all the distractions you’ll face this Christmas, but we’re here to make sure you’re covered! Give us a call, we’ll make a list and check it twice… So you can be worry-free throughout the holidays.

Brash is our resident super model. Don’t let her name full you, though! She is super sweet & affectionate, and always eager to receive pets and snuggles from you. She gets along fairly well with her feline roommates, waiting her turn for the feather wand & chin tickles. She’s happy napping the afternoon away while you’re at work (or working from home), then cuddle up for some attention. She loves to flop down and roll around to show off her beauty, hoping to entice you to pet her and give her some tubby rubs. She has the cutest way of stretching out her arms and legs while making air biscuits while she’s getting loved. She likes to have a comfy spot to hide while she gets used to a new place, but once she’s comfortable, she’s all about getting some love and affection from you and any new friends. She also enjoys climbing, so a cat tree would make this girl one happy cat. Brash is an absolute gem of a cat and can’t wait to brighten your home and your life.

Although it’s the most wonderful time of the year, it’s also considered one of the riskiest times of the year. The number of home accidents and thefts increase drastically throughout the holiday season; in fact the number of homeowner’s insurance claims usually doubles during the months of November and December.

Davenport House celebrates the season with candlelight tours

Credle hopes visitors and locals alike will use this time of year to appreciate the city around us. “It’s time to just suspend whatever turmoil you’re dealing with and take in this beautiful city, especially this time of year. We’re all looking for new promises in 2022. We put one foot in front of the other and keep moving forward.” “We hope the spirit of our New Year celebration will resonate and warm the hearts of our visitors.” Admission for Holiday Evening Tours by Candlelight is $12 for adults in advance and $15 at the door. Children ages 6-17 are $6 in advance and $8 at the door. DHM

asks that patrons call about scheduling a time to visit or indicate on their online purchase the time they hope to enter the house. The tour requires that guests be able to walk up and down stairs and maneuver in dimly lit rooms. Guests will be asked to be mindful of current safety guidelines during the tour and should anticipate wearing masks inside the building. For more information or to reserve tickets, please call 912236-8097, visit www.davenporthousemuseum.org, contact info@davenporthousemuseum.org, or visit the Davenport House Museum Shop.

Next to the manicured green space, bubbling fountain, and majestic live oaks of Columbia Square sits The Davenport House Museum (DHM), a stately American Federal-style brick home recognized as the first property saved by the Historic Savannah Foundation. Today, its halls are decked for the season and donned in holiday spirit for the anticipated upcoming Holiday Evening Tours by Candlelight. Starting Sunday, December 26 through Thursday, December 30, DMH staff, docents, and volunteers open the house for candlelit tours for locals, families, and visitors alike. “The event celebrates the coming of the New Year as it would have been observed 200 years ago,” said Jamie Credle, Davenport House Museum Director. “We’ve hosted this event for 18 years. It’s our gift to families who might be visiting during the holidays who are looking for something unique to do. It’s also wonderful for locals who just want to experience something special for themselves in their own back yard.” Credle said patrons may arrive at the historic house, located at 324 East State Street, any time between 6-8 p.m. for the fifty-minute tour. This family-friendly event will feature costumed docents telling the story of early 19th-century holiday festivities. “The tours will begin every 15 minutes, conducted by volunteers, staff, and docents. There will be cider punch, shortbread, singing, and dancing,” she said. “The group Bella Harmony—vocalist Audrey Allgaier and guitarist Joe Flanders—will perform Auld Lang Syne in the drawing room the first two and last two nights. The time slots are beginning to fill up, so reservations are strongly encouraged,” she stressed. Vocalist Liana Mosley, who started as a Savannah Arts Academy junior interpreter eight years ago, will be singing on Tuesday, December 28. “So many of our docents are Savannah Arts Academy guides who’ve trained with us. You’ll see they’re such happy people who love doing these tours and sharing what they know,” Credle said. Part of the experience, Credle said, will include a short, dramatic presentation on the discovery of Clement Moore’s poem “A Visit from St. Nicholas.” However, she insists the highlight will be experiencing the house by candlelight. “Holiday Evening Tours by Candlelight allows our guests the opportunity to get a glimpse at a time long ago when the world was so different,” said Credle. “We’ve all been through so much the past couple of years that it’s almost as if we’ve been going through the motions of the holidays. Although Christmas celebrations change over time, the basics are still the same: sharing food, fun, and fellowship with family and friends. We get to be happy with the people who matter most, knowing we made it through another year,” she said with a laugh. When asked what she hoped people would come away with after the candlelight tour, Credle said, “The house is visually stunning. It’s the first property saved by the Savannah Historic Preservation and it started a movement in this city. We’re not a city in decay. We have history and we conserve it, develop it, and learn from it.”

FOOD & DRINK COCKTAIL OF THE WEEK The Ed Sheeran

Compiled by Jamie Burton jamie@connectsavannah.com

ENJOY AT: THE LITTLE CROWN

BY PIE SOCIETY

MADE WITH: HOUSE-MADE GINGERBREAD MAN MIX, ELIJAH CRAIG BOURBON, FRESH LEMON JUICE, EGG WHITES It’s going to be two ounces of Elijah Craig. All on its own, it’s really smooth bourbon. When you use it in a drink, it will pop through a little better. It’s light. Then we have our house made and wonderful, Gingerbread Syrup. It has all of the flavors of fresh ginger, vanilla, clove, cinnamon, all the goods. A little bit of lemon juice to even everything out. A good, traditional sour has egg white in it. We have a vegan friendly option using something non-animal. For a good sour, it needs to have some volume so we’re going to ice it. Silky and smooth. The drink is named after a British pop singer, who is a redhead. He has a record label called Gingerbread Man Records. The name is an obvious and lighthearted approach towards his hair and complexion. Just like its namesake, it isn’t much to look at but it sure can sing. We try and keep a lighthearted approach in naming the drinks. This one works on all levels. Also on the menu: Mary Poppins

SMOOTH BOURBON, FRESH LEMON, HOUSE INFUSED GINGER HONEY, DRY CABARET FLOAT

MEET THE BARTENDER:

Joshua Fethke

The Little Crown is Georgia’s Smallest Pub. We have a very intimate atmosphere. I’ve seen people come in here and then all leave together who were complete strangers. It’s really cool in that sense.

Fun Fact: Melissa’s father, one of the owners of Pie Society, was a naval veteran for the Royal Navy (Great Britain). A ship called the ‘Ark Royal’ which is also the name of our food truck: Ark Royal. What got me into bartending? You know, fame, fortune, the admiration of women. None of those things really happened, but I make some money and really good friends. Here I am almost 20 years later doing it but at my own pace. My favorite spirit? I’m a rum guy through and through, but when the weather hits like this, bourbon is the way to go. So, that Ed Sheeran cocktail is a good choice.

. CONNECT SAVANNAH | DEC. 22-JAN. 4, 2021

Off of our current menu, I’m all about The Trade Route. According to the other bartenders in town who know me, I’m Tiki Josh. So, tiki cocktails are my thing. I like to call them Polynesian-style cocktails. This one really works because it’s got Bold Navy rum, it’s got two types of Caribbean rum, lime juice, a little kiss of coconut. All of those things were a part of the naval culture.

lauren@connectsavannah.com We tend to associate holiday season outfits with sequins, bold jewel tones and fabulous red lipstick, but sometimes less is more. A simple satin dress is a classic piece that, when styled correctly, can be a great holiday party option. A cardigan with rhinestone buttons adds a touch of glam, while keeping you cozy and comfortable. Add a simple kitten heel and some old Hollywood waves in your hair for the ultimate timeless look. Satin dress, cream cardigan available at Morgan Rae Boutique (301 W Broughton St., Unit B).

Tailored sets are everywhere right now. Lucky for us, they’re not all formal business suits. Most of the sets you’ll find around town are brightly colored with cropped jackets and high-waisted shorts, making the styling possibilities endless. Try layering your blazer over a shiny blouse for a touch of sparkle at a holiday party. Pair the look with white booties and a bold lip. For a less dressy outfit, pair just the shorts with an oversized sweater. Or, put the blazer over a graphic tee with ripped jeans on the bottom. Blue jacket, blue shorts, sparkly blouse, clear purse available at Morgan Rae Boutique (301 W Broughton St., Unit B).

HELEN DURANT:

‘LINES ARE WHAT I LOVE’ By Beth Logan ART COLUMNIST

Few pieces of art speak to me more than the passionate, gestural paintings of Helen Durant. Now in her early 70’s, fragile and graceful as a bird, delicately boned and softly spoken, Durant’s genteel Southern accent and appearance belie the boldness and intensity she brings to her work. It was a teacher at her Baltimore boarding school who initially recognized Durant’s gift for drawing and encouraged her to apply to art school. However, her genteel Atlanta parents did not think it ‘proper’ for their southern daughter to go to New York by herself, and instead she enrolled at the University of Georgia “for a very short time.” She relates, “I don’t think I really got along with academia that well. I was a restless spirit. Instead, I came back to Atlanta and took lots of different classes from lots of different teachers.” A trip to Europe exposed her to the works of the great masters and subsequently she attended The School of the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston to receive traditional training. But again, she left, too young and immature to immerse herself completely in the life of an artist. Returning to Atlanta she “fell madly in love,” married, and started a family. “He was in law school at the University of Georgia and consequently I never saw him. I had one child and one child on the way. I drew and drew and drew the children from the time they were born and drew portraits of my husband studying. He was always studying. That was really my school.” Durant credits her brother-in-law with suggesting the Museum School in Boston and with later encouraging her to attend the Cape School of Art in Provincetown, Massachusetts. There she spent a formative summer studying with the famed Henry Hensche and broadening her world and understanding of color. Durant considered this time to be “an amazing experience. Finally, in my early forties, I learned about life and what it was to be a serious artist. The light bulb went off and I fell in love with painting.” As Durant’s children grew up and her time became more her own, she found herself becoming a very different person from her lawyer husband, eventually leaving him to make her own living as an artist.

VISUAL ART

. CONNECT SAVANNAH | DEC. 22-JAN. 4, 2021

Represented by such prestigious Atlanta galleries as Pryor Fine Art and Lagerquist, she was primarily selling still life and figurative paintings. Post-divorce, Durant eventually moved into a studio on Atlanta’s undeveloped west side at the old Murray Mill (now called the Goat Farm), a cotton gin mill built in 1889. Craftsmen, furniture makers, glassblowers and artists utilized the space “down by the waterworks” surrounded by six acres and home to a herd of poorly tended goats. “One day Mother and I were there, and we heard what sounded like a baby crying. It was a newborn kid abandoned by its mama. We picked it up, named it Kudzu, and took him home. And that was the start of my love affair with goats. The property’s owner, Robert, finally gave me five of them. He wasn’t taking care of them. He’d feed them leftover bagels from Einstein’s!” Caring for the goats inspired an extended series of works: “I do tend to paint what surrounds me. I started to draw them. Then I started to paint them. I was so full of ideas then! I was taking pieces of wire and found objects and making three-dimensional representations. I sculpted them in wax and even had a few cast in bronze. A show of the goat paintings at Atlanta’s prestigious Fay Gold Gallery really put me on the map.” Durant’s love of animals has always been evident and her concern for the environment and its wildlife has deepened into a passion for conservation. The plight of wolves and concern for the struggles they face as result of misconceptions has moved her to produce an entire body of work on the subject. She speaks of the “cruel, horrible and barbaric ways” in which wolves are trapped and killed. After seeing the wolf paintings, a Wyoming collector commissioned Durant to paint a massive canvas of elk, which subsequently led to her being picked up by the Diehl Gallery in Jackson, WY and “she was off and running.” Today, she depicts deer, bear, crows, and horses in her characteristic style of expressive charcoal drawings overlaid with washes and drips of acrylic paint, patches of vibrant color, and often, an incorporated layered collage of torn paper. “I love to tear paper. The paper speaks. But drawing has always been my first love. There is something so exciting about its fluidity. If I want something delicate, I may start with pencil. But for strong pieces, I always use charcoal. You can get such rich lines with it. And of course, lines are what I love.” Durant’s method is to go through great spurts of working, then lay the pieces aside and come back to them later. “Unless I have a concrete idea or commission, I will start making marks on the canvas with a brush. Then something will speak to me. ‘Oh, that looks like clouds,’ for example. And then I’ll start to develop it. Then it will become too busy, and I’ll start painting stuff out. I’ll put it aside and then come back to it and see what it needs. I try very hard to abstract paint, but I will always see something. I keep working towards abstraction, but my first love is the drawing and making the lines.” Drawing is her lifelong love affair - gesture and movement her primary focus. It comes as no surprise to learn she took modern dance classes for a decade; that freedom and surety of expression is reflected in every mark she makes. A trip to New Mexico in 2003 and a safari to Kenya in 2008 stirred her spirit and added exciting new material from which to draw. She describes Africa as “life-changing. I did a show after that of all the animals.” And she will never sell the bold triptych of paintings of three life-sized Masai warriors done from her imagination. In rich reds, it hangs in her living room and is simply stunning to behold. Drawing and painting every day, Durant currently works out of a room in her marsh front apartment on Wilmington Island. Moving here four years ago, she has found Savannah a tough art market to break into. Though represented locally by Roots Up Gallery and by Thomas Dean Fine Art in Atlanta, it is gallerist Mariam Diehl in Wyoming who provides the most sales and commissions. Looking forward, Durant says, “I would say that I always want to experiment. I don’t have as many ideas as I used to but in drawing the lines and in tearing the paper, something will come to me. I’m interested in surface now, in layers. I carry on exploring new things, but if I have to continue to do commissions and have subject matter dictated by the galleries, God, I’m still lucky to do this.” As mentioned, Helen’s work is available locally through Roots Up Gallery. BOOKS

MARRIED AF: By Beth Stewart HOW LONG HAVE YOU BEEN IN THE SAVANNAH AREA, AND WHAT BROUGHT YOU HERE? Ten years. I came here for my husband’s work and we really love it and never plan to leave. WHEN DID YOU BECOME INTERESTED IN WRITING, AND WHEN WERE YOU FIRST PUBLISHED? I’ve always been interested in writing and wrote sporadically throughout my life. I became more serious about it about 7 years ago when I had my first short story published in “Literary Mama,” an online magazine. TELL ME A LITTLE MORE ABOUT YOUR HUSBAND AND CHILDREN, AND HOW IT’S INFLUENCED YOUR WRITING. I have been married 20 years and have 3 boys. A high-school, middle schooler and one in elementary. I think all writers draw from their life when they write. Its those observations from real life people can see themselves in.

A Q&A with the Savannah author Jen Marie Wiggins on her hilarious new look at marriage and weddings

Real life is funny. I tried to strike a chord and tap into some of those ridiculous, wonderful and infuriatingly funny moments that happen when you share a life with someone. HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE THIS BOOK TO READERS? Part illustated parody, part gift book: if Dr. Seuss wrote a funny book about marriage for the bridal shower. Then I added a gift registry and place for giver to write a personalized message so it could be a keepsake. TELL ME MORE ABOUT HOW YOU BECAME INTERESTED IN THIS PROJECT AND SUBJECT MATTER. I was in eight weddings in the span of a few years and realized that, with all of them, there was always this awkward time when the gifts were opened. I kept thinking there should be a book to break the ice at all these celebrations, so I wrote it. I wanted it to be that thing where suddenly it’s passed around and everyone’s sharing and telling tales from their own marriages and lives.

. CONNECT SAVANNAH | DEC. 22-JAN. 4, 2021

YOUR BIOGRAPHY SAYS YOU ARE A ‘CHRONIC BRIDESMAID.’ IS THIS LIKE THE 27 DRESSES MOVIE? Not quite! I do love what millennials are doing with weddings today. When I got married, brides were very concerned with all the “rules.” Today, they make their own.

24

The great thing about the book is it’s appropriate for any type of weddingtraditional or otherwise. The humor has a sweet edge to it so its designed for all ages from grandma at the shower to the millennial bridesmaids. You could give it for a bachelorette weekend and everyone could sign it or as an engagement gift. We wanted it to make sense for all those gift giving occasions. ANY FUNNY ANECDOTES OR EXAMPLES FROM THE BOOK YOU’D LIKE TO SHARE? One of my favorite line’s is about the honeymoon. Today’s wedding (and brides) are very digital. There are websites and hashtags and online everything. There is a funny line where bride and groom are on beach on their honeymoon and she looks

at him with a sultry, come hither look and says “that was best text I ever had.” IT’S A PICTURE BOOK FOR BRIDES AND BRIDESMAIDS. WHAT CAN READERS EXPECT? To see themselves and probably their own relationships in it. We all get older and change, and grow—the book touches on those silly, quirky universal moments we all go through. ANYTHING ELSE YOU WOULD LIKE READERS TO KNOW? Just that there’s lots of good info for you on my website jenmariewiggins.com I am 70%0 done with my other book, a beach thriller, and am already working on parenting sequel to this book for the baby shower! “Married AF: A Funny Marriage Guide for the Newlywed or Bride” (on sale Jan. 4 2022) is the keepsake that answers what happens after you tie the knot. The book’s author, Savannah native Jen Marie Wiggins will be having an in-person event at Emily McCarthy’s Savannah shop (2428 Abercorn St) Thurs., Jan.

ROLLING STONES’ SAXAPHONIST LEANS INTO NERD CULTURE By Jason Birkelbach

He’s a vocalist, a writer, and a bona fide grade-A nerd. When Denson isn’t on stage with Mick Jagger and Keith Richards, he leads his own jazz fusion group, Karl Denson’s Tiny Universe, who is playing a New Year’s Eve show at District Live at Plant Riverside. Underlying Denson’s musical propensities is a love for science, superheroes and string theory. “I’m just a nerd by nature and I grew up with Marvel,” Denson said. “I was a Marvel comic book kid, and that’s all about sci-fi. So between the superhero thing and just being a nerd—I really always loved science and math as a kid—it was inevitable.” For the past 20 years, between touring and recording, Denson has been working on a Sci-Fi TV series screenplay, a project he titled “Entanglement.” “When I’m writing, I’m just nerding out,” Denson said. “When you look at science fiction there’s always a little kernel of truth these writers are trying to get to that you see unfold over the decades.” The project began as a superhero story, but when all paths led Denson back to science fiction, he took on a writing partner, fellow musician Matthew Burke of the Red Giant Project, to flesh out the

script. Denson says his ideas revolve around vibration, which is a key element in string theory and literally the thing that makes music happen. Denson’s cerebral approach to music has made him a success. Denson has a robust resume featuring acts the likes of Lenny Kravitz, Slightly Stoopid, the Allman Brothers Band, and of course the Rolling Stones. He has been touring with the Rolling Stones for seven years. The band enlisted him after longtime Stones saxophonist Bobby Keys passed in Dec. 2014. Denson said watching and performing with the Rolling Stones has helped his songwriting. “The whole thing is just kind of a fantasy world to be there,” Denson said. “For me, the amount of hits they’ve made continues to amaze me. Their depth continues to amaze me. “I’m a writer first. First and foremost, I’m trying to write a great song. That’s really my main interest in life. Watching them from day to day, the way they approach faith in their songs and their music, the way they approach lyrics, the way they approach subject matter, it’s always an amazing thing.” Denson’s music epitomizes the fusion genre. Sounds of all ilk weave, wander and wade through any given Denson song without the tune every losing its cohesion. He loves to blend everything he hears into his own amalgam of sonic ingenuity—

sometimes to a fault. “The music that’s out there is so amazing that it totally confuses me all the time,” Denson said. “I listen to so much music. That’s what my real problem is. I follow what’s going on and I like so much of it that it comes into my blend and it keeps changing what I’m trying to get to.” Denson is working on a new album, a follow-up to his 2019 release, “Gnomes and Badgers,” which he said was the closest an album has come to matching his vision. He said he has always struggled translating what’s in his head into the recording. He relies on others to keep ideas clear. “I’m not so hands on in every aspect like a Prince or a Stevie Wonder where they go in the studio and they’re constantly doing it themselves,” Denson said. “I’m trying to write the song and then go into the studio with other people to make it right. I have to have enough of a bearing on where I’m going so that I can lead correctly. That’s the challenge.” Denson brings the same energy, passion and precision to his live shows, and he expects to start 2022 right at Plant Riverside’s District Live. “We’re gonna be dancing a lot,” Denson said. “We’re gonna bring a little westcoast party down to Savannah.” Karl Denson’s Tiny Universe. plays District Live Dec. 31 at 8 p.m. For tickets and more information visit plantriverside.com/districtlive

middle. I’m not just going to always party if I can’t get work done. That’s when I start getting anxiety.” Things weren’t always this clear for Frasco, however. Anxiety has vexed him all his life. It’s the reason he got into music. “I just wanted to find a thing that would cure it and definitely what cured it was playing music, doing something that I loved where I don’t have to think about anything else,” Frasco said. “When I’m on stage and I’m running around and making people happy, that’s keeping me the most present.” He said he hid his other vulnerabilities in cocaine and sex, and when the rigors of touring began to tear at him, and the loneliness of his bad habits broke him down, he found a new solution. “When I was doing it too much, I got burnt out,” Frasco said. “Music wasn’t making me present anymore so that’s when I got into psilocybin, so I could fall back in love with music. And now we’re in a stride where we’re playing the best music we’ve ever made and I’m the happiest I’ve ever been.” To manage his anxiety and depression, Frasco says he micro-doses psilocybin, the psychoactive ingredient found in magic mushrooms. The result, he says, is a clearer, more serene mindset that distances him from his ego and pins him to the present. Frasco’s maturity, clarity and happiness have shaped his newest releases without damaging what has made him a must-see act. New tracks like “Dancin’ Around my Grave” scoop from a deeper well of wisdom while keeping the same vigor that super-charged his early work. The band has been releasing a single a month in anticipation for their new album which drops in March. “This has been a big year for the band,” Frasco said. “There’s hope. There’s optimism. It makes me stoked, and we’re ready to play music for everybody, so if there’s any time to see the band, this is the time to see us.” Andy Frasco and the U.N. play District Live Dec. 29 at 8 p.m. For tickets and more information visit plantriverside.com/district-live

When Andy Frasco comes to town, you go see his show—no questions asked. However, if you do have some questions, like, “Who the hell is Andy Frasco,” read on. We’ve got answers. Andy Frasco is a musician, front man to his eponymous blues-rock band, Andy Frasco and the U.N., and he’s playing District Live Dec. 29. Frasco and the U.N. are known for putting on some of the most raucous, energetic shows in the country. You are guaranteed a good time when they storm through town. From chugging Jameson to crowd surfing to gesticulating unprintable carnal acts, Frasco conducts a frenetic train of hyperactivity through every venue he plays. “It’s a lot of work to make people happy, but when you see their faces at the end of the night, that’s the most fulfilling shit,” Frasco said. “The band’s on fire right now. We just got off a three-and-a-half-month tour. We’re writing new music. It’s the best we’ve ever sounded, and we’re happy.” Frasco has been in the music industry since his teen years when he booked and promoted bands for legendary indie label Drive-Thru Records. When the industry crumbled in 2006, Frasco decided to take what he wanted. He became a musician himself. With $8000 in Bar Mitzvah money, Frasco bought a keyboard and a van and took off across the country, enlisting, on Craigslist, local acts with whom he could learn to be a musician. Trial by fire, do or die, sink or swim, whatever cliché you want, it’s how Frasco built his career. “It’s like shit or get off the pot. I like working like that,” Frasco said. “When you are forced to get better or you’re gonna…sink in front of people, that’s what really helped me get better and get better and get better.” Frasco’s brand of music education was a natural fit for the blues, rock and the jam band scenes. His early tunes like “Blame it on the Pussy” and “Smokin’ Dope and Rock and Roll” are powerful yet simple reflections of the classic “Sex, Drugs, and Rock ‘n’ Roll” lifestyle. However, lost in the hedonic haze of Frasco’s persona is his work ethic. The man is non-stop. Each year of Frasco’s 15 years touring, he has put on at least 250 shows, and most have been veritable bangers. But it seems almost contradictory: how could someone with a tendency for blackout benders and one-night stands have such an artisanal fidelity to his product night after night? The answer is balance; Frasco has mastered juggling his industry and his indulgences.

Blackberry Smoke play New Year’s Eve at Johnny Mercer Theatre By Alan Sculley

. CONNECT SAVANNAH | DEC. 22-JAN. 4, 2021

THURSDAY-SUNDAY @9PM

28

Throughout Blackberry Smoke’s twodecade career, playing live has been the lifeblood of the band. So being forced off of the road by the pandemic wasn’t easy for the group. “It’s a tough habit to kick, playing music in front of people,” Charlie Starr, singer, guitarist and main songwriter for the band, said in a recent phone interview. “We even, before we even started to do those kinds of shows, my buddy Benji (Shanks, who is a touring guitarist with Blackberry Smoke) and I were playing for my neighbors in my backyard. OK, any port in the storm.” In fact, when the Atlanta-based group formed in 2000, getting the chance to tour and play shows was the central goal, and it pretty much has remained the band’s focus ever since. “We knew what we could control was taking our music on the road and playing for people, which was really the most important thing,” Starr said. “We’re playing this music and making these records to sell to these people. We’re not particularly product minded like that, but at the end of the day, that’s what it is. You’re making music to please yourself as a musician, and you’re hoping that these people will buy it so you can make a living. So that was sort of what we focused on. We didn’t set these goals like we want to get signed to a major label and we want to sell out stadiums. We just had maybe a more realistic view of it. OK, here’s what we can do. Let’s do this.” Eventually Starr got to return to taking shows beyond his back yard, as Blackberry Smoke played some socially distanced and drive-in concerts last fall. The band spent much of the summer headlining an amphitheater tour and will continue doing shows right through the end of the year. And fans can expect some surprises in the set list. “We kind of just switch it up night to night,” Starr said. “There are songs that we sort of always play, favorites that I kind of figure, well, if we don’t play them, then we hear about it. But it’s OK. Personally, I love playing all of the songs. There really aren’t any that I go ‘Oh, man.’ And even if I did, even songs we’ve played thousands of times now, when you see people react, it kind of keeps it fresh. ‘Oh, I like this tune.’ But we will be adding new songs from the new record in, and that’s always exciting for the band because it’s the freshest, newest material.” The new album Starr mentions is called “You Hear Georgia,” and it was released at the end of May. The band, which also includes Paul Jackson (guitar), Richard Turner (bass), Brit Turner (drums) and Brandon Still (keyboards), had planned all along to make a new album last year, but the pandemic pushed those plans back for a couple of months. “We were planning to go into the studio in March with Dave Cobb,” Starr said,

mentioning the highly respected producer who remained on board for the project. “We had a bunch of songs written and we were ready to go. We were in Canada. We had just started a Canadian tour. I think we got three shows played and we were sent home. What we were going to do initially was go into the studio right off of that Canadian tour. It’s always great for a band to go in the studio coming off of a tour because you’re all well oiled and rehearsed. Of course, that all got shot down.” Instead the group put recording plans on pause before settling on a late-May trip to Nashville’s RCA Studio A, where Cobb works. This slight delay actually benefited the album. It gave Starr time to write some more songs, a few of which, he said, supplanted other tunes that had been slated to be on the album. One of those tunes was “All Rise Again,” which was co-written by Starr and Warren Haynes (Gov’t Mule and the Allman Brothers Band). One of the best songs on “You Hear Georgia,” the stout and soulful rocker includes a tangy slide guitar solo and a vocal turn from Haynes. Another new addition was the title song, a crunchy rocker responding to the demeaning stereotypes often associated with the South and the people who call it home. “The song ‘You Hear Georgia’ itself was the last one written for the record. I was sitting over in the corner and I had been fiddling around with a riff with my buddy (and songwriting collaborator) Dave Lizmi, who’s a great guitar player,” Starr said. “We were batting some music back and forth and I started playing what I had of that song and singing the first couple of verse lines, and Dave Cobb was over in the corner of the studio on a couch. And Cobb came by having a cup of coffee and he said ‘What’s that?’ I said ‘Well, it’s not finished. It’s nothing yet.’ He said ‘Well, go finish it. I love it. We’ve got

to record it.’ “And Dave Cobb, I think he said you should call the album that, and it was just kind of an Ah-hah moment with all of us,” Starr said. “It was like ‘You’re right.’ It kind of cemented the whole week right here. Everything went so well and then to end on that sort of a bang was ‘Yeah man, you’re exactly right.’” The rest of the “You Hear Georgia” album demonstrates the band’s versatility, while still showing that Blackberry Smoke is first and foremost a rock and roll band. In addition to several other tuneful and muscular rockers (“All Over The Road,” “Live It Down” and “Morningside”), there’s a poppier tune laced with funk (“Hey Delilah”), a pure country song featuring a guest vocal from Jamey Johnson (“Lonesome For A Livin’”) and a strippedback gentle ballad (“Old Enough To Know”). Starr feels the new album, like each successive Blackberry Smoke album, finds the band growing musically and crafting a set of songs that’s a bit more cohesive. “The focus is a little clearer, I think, with each one (album)” Starr said. “I guess that’s bound to happen when a band’s been playing together for years and years. I hope the songwriting has grown. I feel like it has. It makes me feel good. I can go back to our first album and think, as a songwriter, think ‘Oh, well I wouldn’t have done that that way now’ or ‘I wouldn’t have said that exactly that way.’ But that’s just getting older, I guess. There are aspects of our first couple of records that I still love dearly, that, you know, youth and exuberance. But then I put on ‘You Hear Georgia’ and there are songs where I’m like we can still lay it down like we did when we were in our 20s.” Blackberry Smoke play a New Year’s Eve show at Johnny Mercer Theatre in the Savannah Civic Center on Dec 31, 2021, 8:00 p.m. Visit savannahcivic.com for information.

PETER MAYER @ VICTORY NORTH

This is the 22nd anniversary of Mayer’s acclaimed Christmas tour “Stars and Promises.” The Nashville native has released 25 albums to date and tours year round with the Peter Mayer Group. He’s also been the lead guitarist in Jimmy Buffett’s Coral Reefer Band since 1988. A legit guitar virtuoso. TUESDAY DEC 28 | 8 PM

Start the Christmas weekend with soulful, guitar-driven rock and roll. Led by the three Draucker siblings, their eponymous band continues to rock Savannah properly. A portion of drink sales will benefit New Ebenezer Retreat Center, a nonprofit facility in Rincon. Now do the right thing and have too many. THURSDAY DEC 23 | 7 PM

On the last Sunday night of the year, just like the first Sunday night of the year, few things are as reliable in Savannah as Voodoo Soup flattening Congress Street Social Club. Eric “Big E” Moore leads the band for yet another night of soul, funk, jazz, R&B and classic rock. You can set your watch to it. SUNDAY DEC 26 | 10 PM

ANNUAL CHRISTMAS JAM @ SALZBURG BALLROOM, JW MARRIOTT PLANT RIVERSIDE

Teddy Adams and the Savannah All-Star Jazz Ensemble keep a 39 year old Christmas tradition alive. Each year, the legends come home to play holiday songs and improv with the band, this year at the spectacular Salzburg Ballroom. All proceeds benefit Savannah Jazz and their scholarship programs. TRUSTEES’ GARDEN CHRISTMAS FESTIVAL

Zoey and Daniel Jackson III

Charles H. Morris, Sr., said “We’re going to be doing more of these kinds of things. We want to help get people together. I think it’s so important to know your neighbor(s) and your friends. So often, we get busy with our careers, life, and families that we don’t really have a chance to visit with each other enough. We hope this event helps change that.”

. CONNECT SAVANNAH | DEC. 22-JAN. 4, 2021

Trustees’ Garden hosted its second ever Christmas Festival on Saturday, December 18 at the Historic Kehoe Iron Works. The family event included Santa and Mrs. Claus, snow sledding (on 60 tons of fresh snow!), train rides, a bounce house, rock climbing and creative family fun. Families enjoyed hot cocoa and food from Platinum Pizza, Chick-Fil-A and Chazito’s Latin Cuisine around a 23 foot Christmas tree, while shopping for last-minute gifts from a local vendor pop-up.
