editor’s note
Most. Interesting. Week. Ever. by Jim Morekis jim@connectsavannah.com
Our nation was founded on a bedrock principle that we are all created equal. The project of each generation is to bridge the meaning of those founding words with the realities of changing times... Progress on this journey often comes in small increments. Sometimes two steps forward, one step back, compelled by the persistent effort of dedicated citizens. And then sometimes there are days like this, when that slow, steady effort is rewarded with justice that arrives like a thunderbolt. — President Barack Obama I’VE worked in journalism a quarter century, been alive twice that long. Traveled all over, raised children, married, divorced. Whole nine yards. Covered a lot of interesting stories in between, interviewed a lot of interesting people. Seen some crazy stuff. Never have I seen a week like last week. Just as an earthquake suddenly releases eons-old tension beneath the surface within the space of a few seconds, several long-roiling American issues came to a head within days—sometimes hours—of each other. The beginning of the week saw the nation dealing with the aftermath of the murder of the Emanuel Nine in Charleston. Though far from the first such mass shooting—and nowhere near the one with the highest body count—something about the particularly evil motive of the killer struck a deep and profound chord of unrest. Coming after a year of headlines involving tension and inequity between AfricanAmericans and the justice system, the murders of nine worshippers at a historically black church seemed an all-too vividly horrifying climax, one demanding instant action from a nation which had become otherwise obliviously apathetic about mass shootings. And then…. the President said the word “nigger” in a radio interview. In an ordinary week, that might be the biggest news story in the world. Do you even remember it now? He said it to bring attention to racism, but it was also a display of the genius-level trolling Obama has become so adept at, sending the media into a predictable frenzy:
Do you bleep the President of the United States? Do you violate protocol against writing or broadcasting the “n-word,” since the president himself said it over public airwaves? Another gut-check moment of truth. Then, before the first funeral in Charleston was even held, these very serious issues were almost completely consumed by a vortex of debate over… the Confederate flag. As formerly staunch Neo-Confederate Tea Partiers climbed all over themselves issuing statements decrying the rebel flag they revered as recently as the week before, you could literally watch the debate shift form in real time on social media. The issue morphed from a perfectly reasonable and long-overdue discussion of why that divisively racist symbol needs to be immediately removed from the public sphere and ostracized by decent society—certainly true—into what I can only describe as a form of mass hysteria, in which literally the only thing anyone talked about was That. Stupid. Flag. Ordinarily reflective and sober-minded people one-upped each other with more and more fanciful calls to blow up, dismantle or rename flags, symbols, history books, statues, Army bases, and monuments from one end of the country to the other, ISIS-style. The Confederacy hasn’t gotten this much attention since the premiere of Gone With The Wind. But just as the flag debate began to jump the shark, seemingly hours after it started—rename the Washington Monument? Really? —something else popped up. Oh yeah, the big Obamacare decision. In the last major court challenge to the Affordable Care Act, the Supreme Court of the United States affirmed the health care subsidies which underpin the legislation. And just like that… American politics, for nearly a decade revolving around the intensely charged and often-cartoonish debate over Obamacare, changed course in a single heartbeat. As Obama himself said in his brilliant remarks following the verdict—please go to whitehouse.gov and watch the video if you haven’t seen it already—“This is health care in America.” Period. No more “death panel” foolishness. No more dog-and-pony-show nonbinding votes to repeal it in Congress. Much more importantly, 13 million Americans won’t have to suddenly find themselves without health care coverage and
no other options. Tens of thousands of lives will be saved directly by that one court decision. Talk about a reason to celebrate. And then…. And then…. The Supreme Court approved gay marriage in all 50 states. Cue the Biggest Party Ever. After many lifetimes of petty, bigoted, and clearly un-Constitutional deprivation of the rights of LGBT citizens, a majority of justices said what even a majority of Republicans agreed on long ago: Same-sex couples should enjoy the same marriage rights under federal law as anyone else. After years of hard-won, frustrating incremental gains—anyone remember Massachusetts was the first state to recognize gay marriage, in 2004?—the debate was settled for good one Friday morning in June. I’ve never seen such a widespread, spontaneous and genuine outpouring of joy, relief, and celebration from so many people as I saw that day, and the weekend to follow. Frankly, it might be the most deeply felt expression of national unity seen since 9/11. (Obama’s election was a unifying event in that even the opposition recognized the significance of electing the first black president; we saw how long the fuzzy feelings lasted.) Indeed, because of the remarkable, virtually unanimous level of LGBT support among Millennials—most too young to really remember Sept. 11, 2001—last Friday could be the watershed American moment of their entire lives. But amid the party, let’s not be naïve. As I write this, Ted Cruz says he’ll make opposition to gay marriage the centerpiece of his presidential campaign. Since the Charleston murders, several black churches have fallen victim to arson. Totally lost in last week’s hubbub was Obama’s signing of the odious Trans-Pacific Partnership, laying the groundwork for multinational corporations to overturn U.S. law. Wealth disparity in this country has never been higher. Greece and the European Union are locked in a mutual death spiral. The world’s still on fire. California’s still out of water. Last week changed everything. And it changed nothing. But one thing I’ve learned is, take it one story at a time. And always, always celebrate while you can, because you never know what the next week will bring. cs

When I was 10 or 11, summer in Arizona was horrendously boring and hot as hell. To keep me from burning holes in the pool furniture with a magnifying glass and O.D.ing on Days of Our Lives, my mother handed me the biggest book she could find: The paperback edition of Gone with the Wind looked like a brick and weighed about as much, and I dubiously hefted it onto my lap. It took me all of a week to devour all 1,087 pages, love-hating spoiled Scarlett as I pined for Rhett and sobbed for Melanie. The burning of Atlanta seared my heart, and for years I fantasized about making a dress out of the Venetian blinds. Between GWTW and repeated viewings of the adorable Myrtle Beach chick flick Shag at the local dollar theater, I formed some rath-uh romantic notions about the South in my youth. By the time I met the surfer from Savannah who would become my husband, however, I had also acquired also a comprehensive liberal arts education that put me eye-to-eye with the true bloody history of the Civil War and the hard-earned legacy of the Civil Rights Movement, fermenting a passion for social equality and filling in

the gaps of my imaginary petticoats. I married into the South with my eyes wide open, ready to embrace its complicated charms and difficult paradoxes. As any wise person will tell you, marriage ain’t all about the romance, dahlin’. As an outsider, I knew I’d never be considered a real Southerner no matter how deliciously I fry my okra (it’s all about the coconut oil, y’all). Such tacit acceptance has always been fine by me: As a Jewish hippie chick, I figured I was absolved from the past’s persistent evils, as though I could line dance and swill bourbon with the South’s fun-loving side and tiptoe away when it gets all blackout drunk and waves its guns around. I could be up to my earlobes in it, but not of it, so to speak. I think that changed forever last week. We were at a wedding in upstate New York when the horrific shooting at Charleston’s Emanuel African Methodist Episcopal Church hit the news, ripping off the gauze on a wound that still seems to fester as deeply as it did 150 years ago. It can be argued that the South’s racial issues aren’t any more or less intense than the rest of the country’s—the most violent cases of racial unrest in modern history have taken place in the Midwest and Southern California—but
slavery’s painful legacy remains embedded in its soil, in its history, in the heritage some of its citizens champion so fiercely. I felt the backlash as we introduced ourselves to the other wedding guests and told them where we were from. There was an exception when one person asked excitedly, “Georgia? Did you see the zebras running through the streets?” I had to explain gently that last month’s flooding incident involving the escaped zoo animals actually took place in the country of Georgia, “like, near Russia.” She seemed very disappointed. Mostly though, I watched eyes frost over warily, as if I was going to break out a Confederate flag bikini and an AK-47 and start spitting tobacco juice all over the furniture. It was real strange to be judged as Southern. I mean, I did not put a boiled peanut in my mouth until I was well into my 30s. I birthed my babies in California with a doula and a bottle of Rescue Remedy. I was born in freaking New Jersey, for criminy’s sake. Wait, y’all have got me all wrong! I wanted to shout. I am not responsible for this hot mess! Instead, a surprise entered my heart: I found myself defending the South. Maybe I was just rebelling against the Yankee snarkiness that assumes everyone below the Mason-Dixon line has a double-digit IQ

and a fried Twinkie in the glovebox. But I could not let my chosen home be reduced to the actions and attitudes of a few violent, inbred cockroaches. Hackles raised, I spoke passionately about the joyful diversity of my kids’ public schools. I described the miles of forest and marsh, the kindness of strangers, the humble goodness of a paper plate of boiled shrimp caught in one’s own castnet. Granted, I live in a lovely city with a racially-balanced city government, an organic farmers market and a thriving arts scene, a little bastion of progressive thinkers and educated transplants. It also helps that we’ve got The New York Times fawning all over Savannah like we’re the most covetable girl at the cotillion. (Three articles in two weeks? Any more of this courtin’, honey, and you’re gonna have to put a ring on it.) Absolutely, Savannah is a precocious exception to the South that regularly sells out its natural resources to the highest bidder and still refuses to expand Medicaid benefits to millions under the Affordable Care Act no matter what SCOTUS says about subsidies. This is the only South I know: One where for every Confederate flag on an F-350, there’s an Obama sticker on a Prius.
Where there are more people authentically concerned and engaged with economic equality and social justice than any place I’ve ever lived. The South I laud is the birthplace of Martin Luther King, Jr. and a seat of the national food justice movement. It is where, in the wake of horror and death, we stand up, link arms and march together, black, white, brown, young, old, straight, gay, trans, and everyone in between. To this adopted daughter, being Southern is to own the good, the bad and the ugly and work for better. It’s a bittersweet row to hoe, which is probably why we put so much goddamn sugar in the tea. The Confederacy’s been dead and gone a long time, and even the most delusional debutante must know deep in her bones that South ain’t rising again, no matter how much starch it put in its white hoodie. But as God as my witness, how I do believe that this South, our South, can and will rise above the ignorance and the corruption, heal the wounds and show the rest of America what forgiveness, perserverance and gentility really mean. And what will we do with all those retired flags? Frankly, my dear, I don’t give a damn. cs

ONE OF my great loves as a walking tour guide is being able to interact with my tour group at the end of the evening in the form of a Q & A session. It is a chance for me to veer off-script, at least figuratively speaking, and talk about topics I don’t normally cover in my allotted two hour timeframe. I love those moments. I’ve been a tour guide for 14 years and love to read about Savannah’s history, so I’ve got tons of material just sort of floating around in my head that I would never otherwise get to use. In a previous column I covered a few of the sillier queries I’ve received, but I thought that I had better follow that up with: what are some of the best questions I’ve ever gotten at the end of a tour?
rum punch he was promised, though, the new Magistrate Jenkins exercised his new authority: he called Henry a ‘drunken swab’ and grabbed him by the scruff of the neck. He then chastised him for debasing the office of Magistrate, and threw Henry to the floor! The bartender-for-a-night never did get his bowl of punch, because rum was strictly forbidden in Savannah. Henry Parker had been a linen draper back in London, so perhaps it could be said that he made a career out of being three sheets to the wind.
What’s the deal with all the dead bodies buried in odd places in Savannah?
You might have heard the saying that Savannah is a city built upon its dead, and wondered if it is true. Well, it is, and the truth is much stranger than many Savannahians realize. Most of us already know that the original burial ground near Wright Square got What’s the craziest story about absorbed and developed, and the Jewish Savannah that you know? burial ground survives in part in the median There are too many to choose from: the of Oglethorpe Avenue. He remembered digging in the backyard in the late 1940s while doing landscaping with his father, and that they had hit multiple coffins while doing it. They called the city, who sent a truck to pick up the coffins and remains. No one seems to remember where the coffins were moved. Then there’s Savannah’s odd habit of losing the bodies of our patriots and war heroes. We have misplaced or otherwise forgotten the exact location of the final resting spot of Revolutionary War Generals Samuel Elbert, Nathanael Greene, Casimir Pulaski, and Georgia President Button Gwinnett. Amusing stories surround all four: Elbert’s remains were stolen by children but returned. Gwinnett’s remains were exhumed, and kept by a local schoolteacher in his closet for years. Pulaski’s bones have never been 100 percent verified. General Greene’s journey back from
anonymity was anything but ceremonious. When his forgotten whereabouts were discovered in 1901, his body was exhumed and placed in a wooden soap crate. Moved to the nearby police barracks, the box containing the war hero’s bones was reportedly kicked by a newspaper reporter enquiring what was within. “Great heavens, man,” the police sergeant told him, “that’s General Greene’s body you are kicking.” These are just two of the many wonderful questions I’ve been asked over nearly a decade and a half of leading tours here. What I love is that people are curious enough to ask them in the first place. This city is full of those truly strange, exotically great historical tidbits which make her unique. Revealing just a few means that I get to contribute in some small way to the authenticity of the Historic District. cs James Caskey is owner and operator of Cobblestone Tours and a travel author.

It ALL begins with a simple drawing of one of the planet’s most docile creatures. Back in 2012, Savannah-based entrepreneurs Emily Quintero, Jared Jackson and Vann-Ellison Seales were searching for designs for their new T-shirt company, 13 Bricks. Recent SCAD grad Quintero offered up a few from her sketchbook, including a panda bear. But unlike cute depictions of its plushy counterparts, this panda took a fighting stance, red gloves at the ready. The limited edition design was part of 13 Bricks’ seminal launch and quickly became one of its best sellers. All was well with the burgeoning brand until a few months ago, when its principles began receiving texts and tweets from around the country about an almost identical garment for sale at Urban Outfitters and on T-shirt megasite Threadless.com. Accusations of creative appropriation and corporate greed zoomed through social media after Quintero posted the two designs side-by-side on her Tumblr page last week. The similarities are obvious: Same grungy lines, same red gloves, same two-layered print job. The difference is far more important: One comes from a socially-conscious small business, the other mass-produced for one of the biggest clothing resellers in the world. “We cannot forget the reach these large companies possess,” writes Quintero. “Artists like myself can barely touch them.” Her angry panda was conceived to show 14 how even the most peaceful can be pushed

into rage, and the irony becomes even more poignant in the face of a corporate Goliath. “People already liked it because it’s a symbol of fighting back,” says 13 Bricks art director Alfredo Martinez. “This takes it to a whole other level.” The 13 Bricks business partners have been blindsided by what they feel is creative piracy. (Quintero relocated to Portland, OR last year but remains part of the team.) “We’re already up against the big corporations. Now we have to compete with our own original concept,” laments marketing director Jackson. “It’s like originality itself is endangered.” Vending original designs silkscreened onto organic cotton, 13 Bricks heralds the sustainable arts economy gaining traction in Savannah, evidenced by regular craft fairs and a rash of new affordable studio space. It’s been slow going but the company has made progress in the last two years: It moved into a swank new storefront on East Broad Street in May and recently added graphic design and printing services to its business plan. “Our whole mission is to support artists, and the work of one ours gets jacked,” says Seales, shaking his head. “No one thinks this is going to happen to them.” Nobody knows how the panda tee ended up next to the shapeless shifts and rayon rompers at Urban Outfitters, but Seales has his suspicions. He and 13 Bricks were invited to be part of an “independent marketplace” at UO’s Broughton Street location last October, where he says that during setup an official-looking shopper bought one item from every local vendor, including 13 Bricks’ signature bear in the boxing gloves.

While the other panda was already for sale on Threadless.com, 13 Bricks’ owners feel that Quintero’s design may have alerted UO buyers to the trend-worthy value of the image. Seales reports that he began receiving the notices of the panda’s ubiquity a few months after the event. “Let’s just say we’re skeptical,” he says. In her Tumblr plea, Quintero documents that she first posted her pugilistic panda in October 2011 and points out that the other bear did not appear online until January 2013. The timing is damning enough, and Urban Outfitters’ controversial history doesn’t help. Along with distasteful PR disasters like the Navajo flask flap of 2012, the company has long been lambasted for co-opting original artwork for its cheap duds without permission, including miniskirts bearing designer James Soares’ graphic prints and T-shirts emblazoned with street artist Cali Killa’s shadowy “Beware of Hipsters” motif. The resulting bad publicity has kept its PR department spinning, but the UO’s fake-Guatemalan fringed pockets are deep. To take recourse legally, the onus is on the artists and small business owners, few of whom have the resources to entangle themselves with a corporate legal team Kate Strain, an intellectual property and franchising attorney with local law firm Belzer PC, says some lawyers might take up an underdog’s case on contingency. A judge or jury could order a company to pay out anywhere from $750 to $150,000 per infringing article if the articles in question have been registered with the U.S. Copyright Office. “If you have filed an application for the work at the U.S. Copyright Office before the infringing activity has occurred or within three months after publishing the work, you may be entitled to statutory damages,” explains Strain. “For example, if you put up a T-shirt for sale on your website on January 1 with your original image on it and file the copyright application before April 1, you can still get statutory damages if someone sold your image before April 1 because you filed the application within three months of publication.” It can cost $35-$55 per image to file a copyright application at www.copyright.gov, and up to $800 to fast-track the process.

Connect tracked down Hungarian illustrator Balàzs Solti, the artist who created the image for Threadless’ panda shirt, and asked him to comment on the similarities between the designs. He responded immediately with the claim that his design, titled “The Winner,” came directly from his own mind. “I’m sorry if this company feels that [mine] is a copy of that work [sic], but I’ve never seen before this design,” writes Solti via email. “It didn’t viral on the Internet [sic].” Solti’s other work reflects the same grungy style, and he has several panda illustrations on his website going back to 2011. His boxing bear has a different facial expression than Quintero’s and also originally had blue gloves, which were changed to red by Threadless before the T-shirts were manufactured. Solti says he came up with the idea sometime “at the end of 2011 or in early 2012” and first posted it on January 1, 2013. news & Opinion | The straight dope even during pre-primary season. The legislation that introduced matching funds also tried to limit total campaign spending, but the Supreme Court struck that part down, and since then the cost of campaigning has skyrocketed: 2012’s presidential race cost $2.6 billion. So winning the nomination is still quite rare if you aren’t making it rain: since 1976 there have only been two cases where the candidate with the most money on the eve of the primaries didn’t win the party nomination, and both times the candidate who did—Obama and Jimmy Carter—was still in the top five fundswise. In other words, you have to start at a certain base level of popularity to hold your own financially, even at the beginning of the race. If you do manage to make it out of the convention, you’re at least in position to hope the economy and the incumbent’s approval rating conspire to put you in the White House. But even if you don’t wind up as the nominee, going through the candidacy process can clearly be an excellent career move. Howard Dean flunked out of the 2004 primaries, but he got elected chairman of the Democratic National Committee. Newt Gingrich parlayed his 2012 run into a highprofile (if short-lived) gig with CNN. Joe Biden, of course, became vice president— hey, whatever floats your boat. With at least 15 recognizable names already in the Republican pack, obviously most aren’t going to reach the top level of fundraising success that equates with viability, so a lot of these people are playing for soapbox time now and speaking fees later. Is that enough payout to warrant, say, eight months of grueling travel, degrading debate formats, and New Hampshire cuisine, not to mention the possible revelation of any extramarital affairs you’re having? I’m comfortable with “slightly insane” if you are. cs By cecil adams Send questions to Cecil via straightdope.com

Those who believe they stand a chance of winning at least the nomination aren’t totally nuts: the primaries are perhaps the only part of the presidential election cycle where the campaign really matters. The post-convention phase of the process, according to many political scientists, is determined by some combination of the state of the economy and the perceived performance of the incumbent party. (It’s thought this basic principle may be true of elections worldwide.) So on this theory, all the oratory, charisma, and excruciating interviews with Katie Couric didn’t really Does running for president make any matter—Obama was going to beat McCain in 2008 anyway because Bush was unpopusense? lar and the economy was exploding like a cat Republican candidates appear to be coming out in a microwave. Homicide on Eastside; possible connection to earlier shootout
Homicide detectives from the SavannahChatham Metropolitan Police Department are investigating the fatal shooting of a 34-year-old male last Thursday night and a possible connection to a shootout on Laroche Avenue the same evening. Jamon Epps was found in a black 2015 GMC Yukon “with multiple bullet strikes about 9:41 p.m. while officers were investigating shots fired calls a half-mile away moments earlier,” police say. Epps was found deceased in the Yukon on the driveway to Ponderosa Apartments. Patrol officers were investigating an incident “in which two parties began shooting at each other near a strip center at Laroche and Skidaway Road just before 9 p.m.,” police say. “Bullets from the shootout had shattered the glass door at the Top China restaurant on the 4400 block of Skidaway.”
A few minutes later, a 50-year-old woman reported a male “had approached her as she tried to enter her car at a laundromat nearby, demanded her car, pulled her out of it and drove away in her white 2010 Chevrolet Malibu. Detectives found the Malibu parked on Maryland Street in the Avondale neighborhood about 1 a.m. Friday.”
Double shooting on Eastside leaves one dead

Gregory Reddick, 54, and his employer, SJQ Sightseeing Tours, filed a lawsuit in June against New York City for “harass(ing)” them and hampering their ability to rip off tourists, specifically, interfering with their “right” to sell tickets for $200 or more for trips on the Staten Island Ferry — which is actually free to ride. Reddick was wearing an (unauthorized) “Authorized Ticket Agent” jacket when arrested, and according to a New York Post account, believes he operates legally because he misunderstands a technicality in a 2013 court case. Prosecutors, who described the waterfront tourist-exploitation scene as “the wild west,” found Reddick with seven dates of birth, five aliases and six Social Security numbers.

• Doctors at a hospital in Dongyang, China, removed 420 kidney stones from a single patient in June (a “Mr. He”). One of the surgeons told reporters that a soyheavy diet of tofu was probably to blame. According to the Guinness Book of World Records, the most stones removed from one kidney during surgery (in India in 2009 in a three-hour operation) is (this is not a misprint) 172,155. • In May, the Museum of Modern Arts in Krakow, Poland, began showing a video of naked men and women entering a room and playing a game of tag — then revealing that that particular room was actually a building in a Holocaust gas-chamber facility in Auschwitz. The idea, apparently, was to bring three affected nations (Poland, Germany and Israel) together, and among the sponsors of the exhibit was the Israeli embassy in Warsaw, despite criticism that the work was somewhat “repulsive and offensive.” (A similar project opened in Tartu, Estonia, in February, but was closed almost immediately after objections from Jewish-advocacy organizations.) • U.S. students may be clever, but they apparently badly trail Chinese students in the genius of cheating on exams (and especially on the use of cheat-enabling technology). Two students at Florida’s Valencia College filed a federal lawsuit in May against the school and three instructors for forcing them to undergo “transvaginal probes” as part of their sonography (ultrasound) curriculum. According to the lawsuit, the school insisted that students learn the probing on each other because, as an instructor said, “Experience is the best teacher.” The plaintiffs also charged that some instructors and a student leader (dubbed the “TransVag Queen”) made inappropriate, sexualized comments about bodies during the demonstrations. Though the school defended the practice initially, it ordered the live probes

Cirilo Castillo Jr., 45, was arrested in February in Edinburg, Texas, but a charge was not filed until June, apparently because prosecutors were awaiting Castillo’s recovery from a broken leg. He had been found in a barn after trying to have sex with a horse — three years after having been convicted of a similar crime (and warned, at that time, to stay away from the Edinburg farm). The broken leg happened, prosecutors said, because in the February incident, the horse kicked him.

She was discovered by an officer after she had locked herself inside and could not figure out how the locks worked. Police, called to the restaurant, caught the men attempting to hide inside the walk-in freezer. There was “no doubt,” said a supervising officer, that the men would have frozen to death if not for being spotted by police.

A Little Tybee Primer by Anna Chandler anna@connectsavannah.com
They’re named after everyone’s favorite nature preserve, and can sonically instill the same sparkling kind of inner peace as their namesake. That’s right: progressive folk troupe Little Tybee is back, and we are glad to have them! Lucky for Savannah, our Atlantan neighbors come through once or twice a year; if you haven’t seen them before, get ready for a riveting performance—vocalist/pianist/ guitarist Brock Scott, bassist Ryan Donald, drummer Pat Brooks, eight-string electric guitarist Josh Martin, violinist Nirvana Kelly, and keyboardist Chris Case are all musicians of incredible technical finesse. When they write together, those abilities meld into an ethereal sound that merge folk, jazz, world, and psychedelic influences. Their latest, For Distant Viewing, was released in 2013; the band is currently working on their fourth LP. Little Tybee plays our neck of the woods twice this week: first at Tybee Island Social Club, then downtown at Hang Fire. If you haven’t had the chance to catch the band before, bone up before the show: tune into our top picks off of their full-length releases.
Little Tybee head back to SAV for two shows.

The Rail “side yard” has become one of the best places to hear music outdoors in the downtown area—and what’s a 4th of July weekend spent indoors? Savannah songstress Sarah Poole pairs acoustic guitar and brightly warm vocals to make her own blend of folk-pop.
As a kid, Alabamian Donna Hopkins would sneak out to the MGM Grand in Muscle Shoals to jam with members Aretha Franklin’s band. Her musical upbringing shows—the singer, songwriter, guitarist, and producer plays a nasty kind of mudslingin’ electric guitar, bluesy with a healthy heap of twang thrown on it. Paired with a soulful voice unflinchingly belting out songs of American struggle, Hopkins is not one to miss.

Savannah Songwriters Series @Johnny Harris Restaurant
Jan Spillane, Dakota Woods, and Pete Love, and Ben Wells are the trifecta of talent on this month’s Savannah Songwriters Series (SSS) bill. Savannah native Spillane has been performing since the age of 16, favoring jazz, folk, country, and blues influences. Sunday marks Woods’ first-ever Savannah Songwriters Series performance. The 21-year-old self-taught guitarist previously played lead guitar in Savannah band Exit 76; look forward to hearing his gospel and country roots in this intimate performance. An in-demand guitarist capable of playing a variety of genres, Love performs his own songs around town with bassist Dobby Simmons; true to SSS tradition, he’ll play solo for the evening. A math teacher by day, Wells has performed alongside many musicians and bands (including Love and Spillane); he’s been writing his own material for two years.

Keep the party going into the week down at The Wormhole with Anni Piper. “Australia’s First Lady of Blues” recently moved to Cocoa Beach, Florida; back home, she picked up bass at the age of 14, going on to study the craft at Southern Cross University and take home a “Best New Talent” award at the 2005 Australian Blues Music Awards for 2004’s Jailbait. Since then, she’s consistently released house rocker records that highlight her bass talents as well as those of her tight band—organ strains and salty guitar licks pull the flavor out of her bass and let Piper stand front and center. Piper brings her full band along for a rollicking time; her incredible skill paired with her robust vocals will make for an unforgettable Tuesday.

Nurture//Nature: Like a blowtorch to an apple
Sulfur Studios group show highlights environmental and natural themes, from GMOs to wasps By Lauren Flotte artrisesavannah.org
JULY 1-7, 2015
“THAT feeling you get when you’re in nature and you’re very relaxed and you just feel very comfortable being out in the woods or on the beach,” muses Emily Earl, describing a piece of artwork from the upcoming exhibition at Sulfur Studios, “Nurture//Nature.” Earl and her fellow Sulfur Studios proprietors, Jennifer Moss and Alexis Javier Perez, have curated an exhibition of 45 local and national works of art exploring nature and its connection to humanity. “We were really looking for things that talked to the relationship of the individual or society or the built environment, in some way the relationship of the natural world and the human environment,” says Moss. The diverse works—paintings, drawings, sculpture, photography, collage, mixed media, prints, jewelry and video—were amassed through a call for entries, answered by 47 artists in 17 states. The final selection includes 28 artists, about half local and half from outside the Savannah area. The prospectus was inspired by Moss noticing the prevalence of artist statements citing nature as either subject or impetus for creation. “People are really inspired by nature, but when they say that, it means very different things to lots of different people,” Moss says. Moss says, with “Nurture//Nature” “we can see what this cross section is.” “We almost are putting together two exhibitions with the work that came in. There is a group of work that is all kind of bright and colorful. It’s a little bit more straightforward of a comment from several people and with an environmental theme on some of them,” Moss says. These works will be displayed in the front lobby space at Sulfur Studios and accounts for about a quarter to a third of the works. “A lot of the other work we got is a little more contemplative, a little more abstract. Seems a little bit more about the individual’s response to the natural world rather than them trying to make a statement that fits everyone,” says Moss. Within these two bodies, the exhibition 28 dissects reactions to nature. Artist Corey

The Boiling Seafood is a hot hit By Cheryl Baisden Solis
KEEPING an eye out for new eateries is a pleasurable part of my job, and when the Chinese buffet in Chatham Plaza (across from the Oglethorpe Mall) closed its doors, I had a feeling it wouldn’t be long before such a prime spot was filled. Taking a late night walk I saw a thin plastic banner bouncing in the early spring breeze, and sure enough, that was the first sign that The Boiling Seafood was gearing up to open. OK, so the name sounded a tad awkward, but at least you knew for sure what they would be serving! The concept is simple. An array of fresh seafood, boiled quick in tongue-tingling spices, served up fast. Tin buckets at the table to catch your shells and tails, paper on the tables. Johnny Zhang, a native of Fujian province in China, worked his way through many restaurants in his early years here, learning the trade from the ground up. Fujian sits on the southern coast of China, nestled by warm Pacific waters that give up a host of goodeatin’ year round. Any Fujian kid can tell you that good seafood is just part of a good life! Eventually, Johnny dreamed of owning his own place, here in the Golden Mountain land, and he and his wife Ivy decided to leave the Chinese buffets and take-outs behind and concentrate on what they knew best: the glorious goodness that comes from the sea. “I lived in California and saw how popular these places are. I like the look of them, but wanted to expand on it a little further, give it my own touch.” Johnny says. When I ask about the web of graffiti covering the yellow pine walls, he laughs, “They do this at the California places and I like it, so I kept that. People love it when you hand them a marker and tell them to sign their names and comments!” Just ask the servers, who have multiple colors in their pockets—which I did, of course! Who can resist writing on a wall— and with the boss-man’s go-ahead no less? Not me! I even penned my comment in Chinese and signed my Chinese name 赵雪柔 (Zhao XueRou)—had to climb a little to
Johnny and Ivy Zhang, owners find a blank space, but what the heck! If you are searching for a high-end seafood experience, white tablecloths, and china plates, look elsewhere. If you want loads of steaming seafood brought to your table, don’t mind wearing a thin plastic bib emblazoned with a jolly lobster to protect your
clothes, and aren’t fussy about licking your buttery fingers in public, well, you may just find yourself at home here. The seafood is of a good size, fresh, tender, and with the choice of seasonings available: Ragin’ Cajun (mild, medium or hot), a continues on p. 32

tangy Lemon Pepper and Garlic Butter—or all three, called ‘The Big Shebang!’—the flavor is superb. All boiled seafood comes served in a heavy, clear plastic bag with a Styrofoam plate. Prices are a bit changeable as they are set at current market price. Word of warning for the squeamish—the boiled shrimp come with the heads on. This seems to be a slippery point for some folks, so I mention it up front. Open the bag, pop off the heads easily and toss’em in the bucket on the table—and this comes from a girl who covers her ears when she has to step on a bug—ewwww, that crunch!—if I can handle it, so can you! Any New Orleans chef or Chinese cook can tell you that the reason the heads are left on is that they contain a red fat that is highly favorable and makes the shrimp taste better. Fried seafood is also offered, on Their signature Lemon Pepper Wings! the flip side of the menu, and I was thoroughly impressed by the delicate, on the half shell by dozen or half-dozen golden crispiness of each item. —you can’t get much better than that with The fried wings with lemon pepper seayour cold beer! Amanda Seyfried and Mark Wahlberg and lots of CGI star in Ted 2
TED 2
OOO As a huge fan of 2012’s Ted, the box office smash that found writer-director Seth MacFarlane lending his voice to a talking teddy bear, let me just say that the prospect of a sequel excited me more before the release of MacFarlane’s 2014 bomb A Million Ways to Die in the West, a comedy so relentlessly unfunny that it seemed possible the antagonistic auteur would be exposed as a cinematic one-hit wonder. Happily, MacFarlane largely bounces back with Ted 2, which may not match its predecessor but does contain enough of a comic kick to make it a worthwhile diversion. In this outing, Ted and fellow grocery store cashier Tami-Lynn ( Jessica Barth) get married even as Ted’s best bud John (Mark Wahlberg) is still smarting over his divorce from Lori (in other words, Ted co-star Mila Kunis is MIA). But John stirs himself to action when it turns out that the US

government plans to designate Ted not as a “person” but as “property,” thereby stripping him of all his rights. Together, the pair seek legal aid, finally acquiring the services of Samantha (Amanda Seyfried), a pot-smoking junior attorney whose intelligence regarding the law is matched only by her ignorance of film and television references (she’s never heard of Clubber Lang or Gollum and confuses Star Wars with Star Trek). The charm of Ted is that it never took itself too seriously; the problem with Ted 2 is that it does. As Ted fights for his rights, MacFarlane turns up the drama, seeking by any means necessary—even acquiring the services of Morgan Freeman to play a civil-rights lawyer—to compare Ted’s plight with that of other persecuted groups in this country, such as blacks and gays. But it’s hard to take such grandstanding seriously in a movie that also finds time to have John get accidentally covered from head to toe in

semen. Ted 2 also suffers from a touch of sequelitis, as MacFarlane lazily brings back the first picture’s nutty Donny (Giovanni Ribisi) to provide some late-inning menace. Still, what counts most in a comedy is the laugh ratio, and Ted 2 comes out blazing and rarely runs out of ammo. Ted and John are as likably lunk-headed as ever, Seyfried’s Samantha matches up nicely with the guys, and at least two of the cameo appearances really deliver. Plus, any movie that stages its climactic set-piece at Comic Con clearly has its furry finger on the pop-culture zeitgeist.

OOOO In the immortal words of the great Mark Twain, reports of Pixar’s death have been greatly exaggerated. Well, maybe I’m paraphrasing—at any rate, that’s the takeaway following the release of Inside Out, which immediately establishes

itself as one of the best animated efforts ever crafted by the beloved studio, an outfit that had been in a bit of a creative free-fall since 2010’s Toy Story 3. Certainly, Monsters University, Brave and even the critically hammered Cars 2 all have their fans (with Brave even winning the Best Animated Feature Oscar), but none enjoyed the hosannas that greeted the majority of past Pixar pics, most notably during the incredible four-year stretch that produced in rapid succession the powerhouse quartet of Ratatouille, WALL-E, Up and Toy Story 3. Inside Out is a glorious return to form for the outfit, as it demonstrates that few filmmakers in Hollywood today can match the Pixar brain trust when it comes to creating motion pictures that offer an irresistible mix of imagination, intelligence and emotion. Inside Out relates the story of an 11-yearold girl named Riley (voiced by Kaitlyn Dias). More accurately, it relates the story of what’s inside Riley—specifically, core emotions that have been with her since birth. First and foremost, there’s Joy (Amy Poehler), the “control room” leader and the one responsible for trying to make Riley enjoy every moment of her life. That’s a tall order, considering the other emotions are all vying for prime-time programming. There’s Anger (Lewis Black), there’s Fear (Bill Hader) and there’s Disgust (Mindy Kaling). And then there’s Sadness (Phyllis Smith), the emotion that Joy is perpetually attempting to most keep at bay. Yet once Riley moves from her cherished childhood home in Minnesota to a ramshackle abode in San Francisco—a move dictated by her dad’s efforts to get his startup business off the ground—it’s hard for Joy to keep Sadness from not only affecting Riley’s current mood but also infecting the shimmery orbs that house her most precious memories.

An accident results in Joy and Sadness being ejected from the control center, and it’s at this point that the movie really takes off, both visually and philosophically. Riley’s at a crucial, critical age for any young person, waving goodbye to childhood innocence and about to undergo changes that will make her feel like a stranger both in her own body and in a world that suddenly seems a lot more complicated. Certainly, a kid needs all available emotions to navigate such murky waters, and the beauty of Inside Out is how it allows Sadness to basically be the equivalent of both the outcast nobody wants to be around as well as the friend everybody wants by their side in a pinch. All of this is conveyed in a series of adventures that find Joy and Sadness—sometimes accompanied by Riley’s long-forgotten imaginary friend Bing Bong (Richard Kind)— traversing a landscape that includes abstract thoughts, horrific nightmares and a garbage dump of discarded memories. These excursions, which easily top those taken through Tomorrowland and Jurassic World, result in some of the most potent set-pieces in the Pixar canon, with select bits even invoking the spirit of the gems Hayao Miyazaki made for Studio Ghibli. As expected with an A-list Pixar piece, there’s plenty of humor to go along with the heart, particularly in the peeks inside the control rooms of Riley’s mom (Diane Lane), dad (Kyle MacLachlan) and the hysterical twofer seen at film’s end. There are also the expected gags engineered to please the parents even more so than the children, with a few threatening to raise the bar for future animated endeavors.
JURASSIC WORLD
JULY 1-7, 2015
OO “Build a better mousetrap, and the world will beat a path to your door.” This 19th century adage, often credited to Ralph Waldo Emerson, has been modified by Steven Spielberg and co. to read, “Build a better Jurassic Park, and the world will beat a path to the box office.” Certainly, Jurassic World will emerge as one of the summer season’s top grossers, but is it really better than the 1993 blockbuster helmed by Spielberg in the same calendar year that also saw him tackling Schindler’s List? Of course not, though it’s easily an improvement over the two sorry sequels that followed in 1997 (The Lost World: Jurassic Park) and 2001 (Jurassic Park III). Spielberg, who directed the first two installments, turned the reins over to Joe 34 Johnston for the third chapter, content to
serve only as an executive producer. He does the same on Jurassic World, taking a back seat while allowing indie filmmaker Colin Trevorrow (Safety Not Guaranteed) the opportunity to lord over a billion-dollar franchise. Trevorrow doesn’t flub the assignment— the film is generally well-paced and contains a handful of satisfying set-pieces—but neither does he imprint it with anything resembling a personal touch. The original Jurassic Park looked, felt and moved like a Steven Spielberg joint; conversely, Jurassic World seems like it could have been made by any Tom, Dick or Colin. Chris Pratt is Owen, who works at Jurassic World as a combo dinosaur wrangler and velociraptor whisperer. Like his filmic forefathers Sam Neill and Jeff Goldblum, he’s not sure man should be messing around with nature—in this case, creating a new and improved dinosaur meant to be bigger and bolder than anything that’s ever walked the earth. Having learned nothing from the lessons imparted via the aborted Jurassic Park— namely, that out-of-control dinosaurs love to snack on humans—the scientists, capitalists and paleontologist powers-that-be overseeing Jurassic World ignore all modes of common sense and soon find their baby, the so-called Indominus Rex (Darth Indominus to its friends), wreaking havoc all over the themed island. Other dinosaurs also manage to break free, and soon there are fatalities galore. Pratt’s role is thinly written, but the actor invests the character with enough personality to make him an affable hero. Other nicely modulated performances turn up in the supporting ranks, including Irrfan Khan as the JW CEO, Jake Johnson as a talkative techie and The Intouchables’ Omar Sy as Pratt’s best friend and colleague. Other actors, though, are defeated by the shrillness of their roles. Bryce Dallas Howard, as park operations manager Claire, has to remain in ninny mode for far too long a period, only coming into her own toward the end. As young brothers Zach and Gray, visiting their Aunt Claire and becoming subject to the most dino-destruction, Nick Robinson and Ty Simpkins are required to play perpetually irksome kids, the sort of brats you wish will eventually be used by some immoral adult as a bite-size distraction for the rampaging beasts. And the fine actor Vincent D’Onofrio, who first made his mark as a military grunt in Stanley Kubrick’s 1987 Full Metal Jacket, here engages in Full Metal Raptor, playing a
gung-ho security head who wants to train dinosaurs to serve as soldiers in overseas combat situations. Yes, it’s as ridiculous as it sounds, and D’Onofrio’s part requires him mainly to act pompous and spout nonsensical dialogue. But let’s face it: Audiences are coming to see dinosaurs, not people, and in that respect, the film delivers the goods a decent amount of the time. The lovingly crafted critters seen in the ’93 model have naturally given way to CGI counterparts, but for the most part, the effects work proves to be potent, with enough bravura sequences (the aquatic mosasaurus maneuvers, the pterodactyl attack) to satiate the faithful.
SPY
OOO Here’s the extraordinary thing about Spy, the latest comedy from director and hitmaker Paul Feig: it somehow manages to feel like both a star vehicle and an ensemble piece. At its center is Melissa McCarthy, who’s been memorable when part of a large cast (Bridesmaids, St. Vincent) or even in a costarring role (The Heat) but whose chances at a headlining career took a hit with last summer’s dismal Tammy. But Feig, who guided the actress to an Oscar nomination for Bridesmaids and also helmed The Heat, clearly knows how to best employ her talents, and with Spy, a picture he not only directed but also wrote, he offers her what’s basically a cinematic love letter. McCarthy plays Susan Cooper, a CIA agent who’s content confined to desk duty, serving as the miked-up voice in the ear of agent extraordinaire Bradley Fine ( Jude Law). But when Fine is put out of commission by a femme fatale named Rayna Boyanov (Rose Byrne, another Bridesmaids alumna), Susan volunteers to go out into the field. Her boss (Allison Janney) informs her that she’s only to observe and report, but Susan instead finds herself immersed in deep-cover espionage, mixing it up with Rayna while also contending with Rick Ford ( Jason Statham), a rogue CIA agent who firmly believes that Susan will hopelessly screw up the mission. The plot is fairly standard spy-spoof material, but Feig has taken great care to provide his star with an arsenal of comedic opportunities. McCarthy never once lets him down: Her Susan Cooper is wholly sympathetic, but that vulnerability (rarely seen in the actress’ roles before) never interferes with her ability to deliver precisiontimed laughs.
Many of these gags are at her expense, but they’re never mean-spirited, and, perhaps most pleasingly, they don’t revolve around her weight (the fat jokes are mercifully MIA) but rather the impressions that others make about her. It’s here where the rest of the cast comes in and makes Spy far more than a one-woman show. Without fail, all of the performers beautifully play off McCarthy and her often hapless, often heroic character, particularly Byrne, who’s wonderful as a cool crime queen both amused and annoyed by Susan’s shenanigans, and Statham, absolutely hysterical as a macho agent more skilled in braggadocio than in anything else. Yet the depth chart extends beyond just the marquee names, with Miranda Hart endearing as Susan’s equally awkward friend and co-worker Nancy and Peter Serafinowicz ceaselessly amusing as the randy Italian agent Aldo. Whether Spy holds up to repeat viewings (as does Feig’s Bridesmaids) is unknown, although the incessant audience laughter at the advance screening drowned out so many quips that a second viewing will at least feel like it’s offering some new material. But even if this is a one-and-done deal, that virginal viewing provides a great time at the movies.
SAN ANDREAS
OO San Andreas, which basically pits The Rock against tons of rocks, offers the common theme of personal problems set against a massive backdrop. And while Bogart’s Rick Blaine in Casablanca opined that “it doesn’t take much to see that the problems of three little people don’t amount to a hill of beans in this crazy world,” in the disaster genre, the problems of the little people are paramount. In the case of San Andreas, the three would be Ray (Dwayne Johnson), an LAbased search-and-rescue helicopter pilot, his wife Emma (Carla Gugino), whose inability to crack her husband’s defenses following a past tragedy has left her no choice but to file for divorce, and their daughter Blake (Alexandra Daddario), whose inner decency matches her outward beauty. cs Hanging around another part of the plot is Lawrence Hayes (Paul Giamatti, lending necessary gravitas), a Caltech seismologist whose own research has revealed that a gargantuan earthquake is set to hit California, with most of the damage occurring in San Francisco. Sure enough, disaster wallops the West Coast, and it’s up to Ray to rescue first his wife and then his daughter, the latter off spending the day with her mom’s new boyfriend Daniel Riddick (Ioan Gruffudd).

Free will astrology ARIES
March 21-April 19
To determine whether you are aligned with the cosmic flow, please answer the following questions. 1. Would you say that your current situation is more akin to treading water in a mosquito-ridden swamp, or conducting a ritual of purification in a clear mountain stream? 2. Have you been wrestling with boring ghosts and arguing with traditions that have lost most of their meaning? Or have you been transforming your past and developing a riper relationship with your roots? 3. Are you stuck in a gooey muck? Or are you building a flexible new foundation?
TAURUS
April 20-May 20
Taurus singer Sam Smith won four Grammys this year, largely on the strength of his hit single “Stay with Me.” The song has a lush gospel choir backing up his lead vocals, or so it seems. But in fact, every voice in that choir is his own. He recorded twenty separate harmony tracks that were woven together to create the big sound. What would be the equivalent in your world, Taurus? How could you produce a wealth of support for yourself? What might you do to surround yourself with a web of help and nourishment? How can you amplify and intensify your efforts so they have more clout? Now would be an excellent time to explore possibilities like these.
GEMINI
May 21-June 20
Born under the sign of Gemini, Gustave Courbet (1819-1877) was a French painter who upset traditionalists. Unlike many of his contemporaries, he wasn’t interested in creating idealistic art based on historical and religious themes. He focused on earthy subjects about which he had direct experience, like the day-to-day lives of peasants and laborers. So even though he became a highly praised celebrity by his mid-thirties, the arbiters of the art world tried to exclude him. For example, they denied him a place in *Exposition Universelle,* a major international exhibition in Paris. In response, Courbet built a temporary gallery next door to the main hall, where he displayed his own work. As you strive to get your voice heard, Gemini, I urge you to be equally cheeky and innovative. Buy yourself a megaphone or erect your own clubhouse or launch a new enterprise. Do whatever it takes to show who you really are.

“I am trying to be unfamiliar with what I am doing,” said composer John Cage in describing his creative process. That’s excellent counsel for you to meditate on, Cancerian. The less expertise and certainty you have about the rough magic you’re experimenting with, the more likely it is that this magic will lead you to useful breakthroughs. To bolster Cage’s advice and help you get the most from your period of self-reinvention, I offer you this quote
from Picasso: “I imitate everyone except myself.”

and hilarious adventures.
SAGITTARIUS
Nov. 22-Dec. 21
Your words of wisdom come from Leo artist Andy Warhol: “Sometimes people let the same problem make them miserable for years, when they could just say, ‘so what.’ That’s one of my favorite things to say. ‘So what.’” Can I interest you in that approach, Leo? It has similarities to the Buddhist strategy of cultivating non-attachment -- of dropping your fixations about matters that can’t be controlled or changed. But I suspect you would draw special benefits from the breezy, devil-may-care spirit of Warhol’s version. So start there.
There are lots of inquiries and invitations coming your way -- perhaps too many. I don’t think you should pursue all of them. In fact, I suspect that only one would ultimately make you a better human being and a braver explorer and a wiser lover. And that one, at first glance, may have not as much initial appeal as some of the others. So your first task is to dig deep to identify the propositions that are attractive on the surface but not very substantial. Then you’re more likely to recognize the offer that will have lasting value even if it doesn’t make a spectacular first impression.
VIRGO
CAPRICORN
In her late twenties, J. K. Rowling was a single mother living on welfare. That’s when she began work on her Harry Potter books. Craig Newmark had turned 42 by the time he founded Craigslist. One of the world’s most oft-visited websites is HuffingtonPost. com, which Arianna Huffington established when she was 54. As for Harland Sanders, creator of KFC: He didn’t begin building the global empire of fried-chicken restaurants until the age of 65. I hope the preceding serves as a pep talk, Virgo, reminding you that it’s never to late to instigate the project of a lifetime. The time between now and your birthday in 2016 will be an especially favorable phase to do so. Start ruminating on what it might be.
“I find a lot of people physically attractive, but finding people mentally and spiritually attractive is different and much harder for me.” So says 40ozshawty on her Tumblr page. If you share that frustration, I have good news. According to my reading of the astrological omens, you’re due to encounter a higher-than-usual percentage of mentally and spiritually attractive people in the next six weeks. But I wonder how you’ll deal with this abundance. Will you run away from it, feeling overwhelmed by the prospect that your life could get more interesting and complicated? Or will you embrace it, daringly welcoming the interesting complications?
Aug. 23-Sept. 22
LIBRA
Sept. 23-Oct. 22
It’s the power-building phase of your astrological cycle. To take maximum advantage, convey the following message to your subconscious mind: “I know you will provide me with an abundance of insight, inspiration, and energy for whatever intention I choose to focus on. And during the next four weeks, my intention will be to cultivate, expand, and refine my personal power. I will especially focus on what author Stephen R. Covey called ‘the capacity to overcome deeply embedded habits and to cultivate higher, more effective ones.’”
SCORPIO
Oct. 23-Nov. 21
I’m a big fan of science and logic and objective thinking. Most of us need more of that good stuff. The world would be a saner, safer place if we all got regular lessons on how to be more reasonable and rational. But in the immediate future, Scorpio, I’ll steer you in a different direction. I believe you will benefit from injecting your imagination with primal raw crazy wild mojo. For example, you might read utopian science fiction and fairy tales about talking animals and poetry that scrambles your intellectual constructs. You could remember your dreams and ruminate about them as if they were revelations from the Great Beyond. You may also find it healthy to fantasize profusely about forbidden and impossible
Dec. 22-Jan. 19
AQUARIUS
Jan. 20-Feb. 18
I think you will generate good fortune for yourself by choosing between two equally invigorating but challenging tasks: losing your illusion or using your illusion. Both are quite worthy of your attention and intelligence. To succeed at either would fuel your emotional growth for months to come. You probably can’t do them both, however. So which will it be: Will you purge the illusion, or put it to work for you?
PISCES
Feb. 19-March 20
Do you sometimes imagine yourself to be an underachieving underdog? If so, I suggest you start weaning yourself from that fantasy. Do you on occasion allow people to take advantage of you? It’s time to outgrow that role. Do you ever flirt with being a self-pitying martyr? Say bye-bye to that temptation. Cosmic forces are conspiring to relieve you of tendencies to act in any or all of those ways. I’m not saying you will instantly transform into a swashbuckling hero who knocks people over with your radiant self-assurance. But you will, at the very least, be ready to learn much, much more about how to wield your vulnerability as a superpower.
