It is truly a sight to behold: Ten inches high and covered in rhinestones, this year’s Tybee Prom crown sparkles as if lit with the aura of an imperial monarch, or at least one of the classier reality TV celebrities. But there’s no need to marry a millionaire or subdue the peasants to wear it. This is Tybee Island, where flip-flops are official attire and anyone can be inducted as royalty for the price of a raffle ticket. (And since it’s a capitalistic democracy and not King’s Landing, you get a deal: Three for $5 or seven for $10.) The bedazzled diadem will be bestowed upon a new queen or king this Saturday, June 11 at Tybee American Legion Post #154 at the culmination of the Tybee Prom. All proceeds from the event and raffle benefit the Humane Society for Greater Savannah. This year’s theme is “Pretty in Pink,” so expect plenty of rosy tulle, coral cummerbunds and fuchsia feather boas. Attendees are invited to get creative: The crowning of prom royalty may be up to chance, but the winner of the evening’s Most Original Ensemble will be chosen by a council of discriminating judges. When it comes to busting a move, however, all are encouraged to dance like no 10 one’s watching. The Girlfriends and Sassy

Snacks from North Beach Grill will be provided, and the Legion offers a stocked cash bar. Sisters Shirley Sessions and Sandy McCloud have been the organizational force behind the annual “informal formal” that’s inspired gratuitous sequins and sea oat corsages since 2004. “People just love to dress up and dance,” says the petite Sessions, whose spiky haircut and colorful wardrobe has led the fashionforward island soirée. “It’s so quirky and fun, so Tybee.” With the contagious spirit of a couple of kind cheerleaders, the energetic duo and their cadre of volunteers plans and
implements the whole prom shebang, from the decorations to the flyers to selling tickets. McCloud, a tall redhead, even takes the stage as one of the Girlfriends’ crooning sirens and as one of the Sassy Cats. “We both wear a lot of hats,” admits McCloud. “It’s OK, we look good in hats,” adds her older sister as they both dissolve into laughter. Seasonal beach bunnies for their entire lives, the sisters escaped Atlanta and moved to the island for good in 1998. Each quickly found a place within the greater Savannah community: Sessions served on the Tybee City Council and recently retired after 15 years as the
director for United Way’s Hands On Savannah volunteer program. McCloud had her own morning radio show on 98.7 The River for half a decade and currently puts her charms to work as a real estate agent with Century 21 Fox Properties. Sessions lives on the south end of the island and McCloud the north, but that’s the end of the sibling rivalry. The two regularly travel together and just returned from a trip to Paris, where they explored the city’s famous museums and catacombs. Both also hold a giant place in their hearts for the area’s homeless animals. For the past three years they have directed the prom’s proceeds to HSGS,

On THE second floor of 14 E. Broughton Street, there’s a towering circle centered against the street-side plate glass window. White, and studded in orange stars, light pours over the handmade wooden frame, illuminating years of use. Bare wood peers through in small sections; white painter’s tape bandages two cuts. It was originally handmade by Sebastian Edwards for Robyn Reeder and Igor Fiksman’s wedding in 2010, a cool alternative to a trellis or altar—a circle of love. Since then, the circle has found its way into Robyn’s vintage shop, Civvies, and her former business, Primary Art Supply; it’s even framed her as she steadfastly keeps the beat in her band, The Silver Machine. While Robyn never tries to force iconography in her life and work, the circle keeps making appearances: there’s one cut into the beautiful headboard that Jonathan Athon hand-built for her, anchored by two vintage lamps with spherical elements. With Igor and sister Jenny at her side, Robyn explains how her life and work have come full-circle, too: Civvies has moved back into 14 E. Broughton, the old Primary. Her contract with Blick Art Materials, where she’s worked as a consultant for three years, just ended. Up until a month ago, she was working two jobs with stage four cancer. “It’s been so confusing,” says Robyn, “because I hide it so well. People are like, ‘you look great,’ and...I am not.” “My goal was to turn 40, which happened a month ago,” she continues. “I had this series of goals that really helped me keep going.” A week after she was dancing with friends at her birthday bash, Robyn was hospitalized by a grand mal seizure. “It’s definitely strong progressing,” Igor 12 says.

Remember that ID that Robyn brought to Savannah? “[Igor] was the original door guy at The Velvet Elvis,” Robyn recounts. “He had just moved here from Kiev in ‘91, ‘92. So he was barely fluent, and just kind of scary: his name was Igor, he didn’t speak English, he didn’t smile very much, he was the door guy, I had an illegal ID...I just remember all this anxiety going in there all the time!” “We were meant to be all those years,” she says. “We were easy friends, both local musicians. We’d see each other at every party, every show.” Sometimes after the downtown bars had closed, folks would head across the bridge, where the drinks were served into the wee hours of the morning; one night, on a platonic whim, the two drove over together. “We had our first kiss in the strip club and never looked back,” Robyn laughs. “All of the sudden, it’s like, duh! This is it!” That was 2007. They were married in 2010. HHH Primary was acquired by big-box Dick Blick in 2012. While there was resentment from the community, Robyn ensures it was for the best: since the arrival of Blick rival Utrecht, Primary had been struggling. Blick bought Primary’s stock, employed its staff, and even gave Robyn a chance to continue making an impact on the local arts
scene as a contracted consultant. “They put Robyn on as a local liaison for the arts,” Igor explains. “She spent a lot of time putting on art shows, supporting local events, museums...she massaged Blick into doing all these things that they don’t normally do.” “And that contract just finished this month,” Robyn concludes. “So I’m out of it. So that’s just part of this whole... everything’s kind of converging at this same time. I’m out of the art supply business, but never thought I’d look back at the Primary building, and here we are!” HHH While it was common to find Robyn hustling on Broughton by day, there was one spot to find her by night. “All the shows! Every show, you saw Robyn in the front row!” Igor grins. A devoted fan of punk and rock ‘n’ roll, she loved local bands like GAM and Pinball Sex Machine, the latter of which Igor was a member (“the first time I saw him onstage, he had a blond mohawk, a fur white coat, and boxers on,” Robyn bemusedly remembers). “So she’s like, ‘I’m not just gonna be a bystander,” Igor continues. “‘I wanna be a participant! I’m gonna learn to play drums!’ She always had it in the back of her mind—” “I think every girl does,” Robyn interjects. “But you were denied the right to play drums in school!” Igor reminds her. “You were like, ‘I wanna play drums,’ and they were like, ‘girls don’t play drums.’ And nobody’s gonna tell Robyn what she’s going to do and not do, so sure enough, she learned drums.”
In 2003 with a few lessons under her belt, she met guitarist Amy Bess-Ochoa by chance at the American Legion. Shortly after, Hot Pink Interior was formed; Sebastian and Craig Johansen joined over time, on bass and guitar respectively. Influenced by ‘70s metal, rock and punk, the band performed for eight years, with Robyn styling the ladies in hot pink, polyester, and spandex thrifting finds. “There weren’t a lot of other girl bands,” she recalls. “It was more of a man’s world.” Robyn loves drums for their power, preferring to keeping her style straightforward and steady instead of complex. She also played in Cuddlebear (alongside longtime beau and Superhorse/GAM frontman Keith Kozel), and When Hipsters Attack (with Scott Stanton a.k.a. Panhandle Slim, Tracey Cox-Stanton, Sebastian, and Danielle Hughes Rose). Her crowning achievement, however, may be her most recent project. The Silver Machine’s record landed in the hands of Dead Kennedys’ Jello Biafra, and will soon be released on his iconic label, Alternative Tentacles. He reached out after receiving a package from the band containing a 3-D printed spiritual box, altar, crown, CD, and instructions for listening. “How cool is that? That’s fricking winning!” Igor grins. In the gyno-futurist ohm-rock band , Robyn is the pulse: that steady, powerful, and meditative type of drumming she enjoys is the center around which the shamanistic group builds their sound.

Robyn’s cancer returned in 2008, spreading to her bones, lungs, and spine. Struggling under treatment by “harsh, regimented Western medicine,” her longtime business partner Amy, now a yogi, reached out. “There’s different South American shamanic ceremonies that she was involved with that she brought me into,” Robyn says. The ceremonies changed Robyn’s life. “Letting go of fear, letting go of dealing with this disease—it helped me immensely,” she says. “But it also brought out a lot of amazing people who have taught me so much about the death process. It’s infinite. It’s almost overwhelming to talk about, because it’s just been very fulfilling and life-changing for me to get through. It inspired a lot of the band from things that I’d experienced.” “I did the whole girl punk rock thing for many years, which I love,” she explains. “But there was a time to change. And I felt like I went in a little bit deeper with the music. Physically it was easier, emotionally it felt good...because before—you know what it’s like—you wanna be, ‘rar, rar, rar, kick ass!’ “And you do! But you can only do it for so long..so I really love where the music went, where it is right now. It’s perfect for what I’m going through and how I kind of want to leave my musical history.” Though a release date hasn’t been set, Robyn says CDs should arrive in the fall. HHH In 2004, Robyn was diagnosed with breast cancer for the first time. Going through treatment was a push to pursue a longtime goal: opening up a shop in the style of Buffalo Exchange. “I’m retail, all the way, from day one,” she asserts. “When I came here to do art, it was fun, but I realized very quickly that I’m a business person.” When Robyn arrived in Savannah, shopping options were very limited—most continues on p. 13

people wore clothes from Oglethorpe Mall or Tanger Outlets. In 2006, Civvies was born in a tiny storefront on Montgomery Street where Ghost Town Tattoo currently resides. Immediately, Robyn selected the shop’s colors—blue, orange, white, and black, opting for graphic, military-inspired branding to complement the name (military slang for civilian clothes). “It all started with a big bang, as usual with Robyn,” Igor says proudly. “A big fashion show was the first thing that happened.” Using the current Marc Jacobs space (then empty), Robyn styled Primary employees of all shapes and sizes and sent them down the runway. Each model also got to style a look, going over-thetop with props and performance elements. After a hell of a kickoff, customers began to get into the buy/sell/ trade groove. A new kind of creativity and edge took over Savannah street style as college kids dug through the racks, creatively clashing patterns, styling their looks around deadstock vintage finds, mixing and matching. In turn, the little space quickly became crowded. When the old Hallmark building two doors down from Primary went on the market, Robyn and Amy jumped on it. They rented the first floor out, and Igor, Athon, and Sebastian completely rebuilt the second story into the perfect home for Civvies. “You were freshly in remission,” Igor says to Robyn. “Everyone was strong and healthy—it was really all Robyn.” “I’m a good delegator,” she smiles. Robyn took to the road to stock the shop with finds from across the country. “That was my passion,” she says. “I was able to travel, get out of town, spend money that’s not really mine, and see places that I wanted to see just by choosing—‘okay, there’s thrift stores everywhere; I wanna go to Aspen.’” She’s even formed relationships with collectors. The socialites, stewardesses, and models of the midcentury open their homes and storage units for Robyn and Jenny to loot through. Hearing the stories behind garments has become one of Robyn’s favorite aspects of the business.
2015 marks Civvies’ 10-year anniversary. Robyn has sold the old Hallmark building, and recently sold the Civvies business to the man who originally bought the Primary building. As of last week, Civvies has moved to the second floor of 14 E. Broughton— Robyn’s first retail space. The shop will celebrate with a grand opening party on July 23. Robyn couldn’t be happier with the arrangement, as she gets to maintain creative control; as Igor puts it: “It’s Robyn’s vision with someone else’s money!” The Primary marquee sign—the biggest sign on Broughton Street since the ‘50s when it was first installed—will light up again with a new name. “A lot of what I’m doing now is just trying to…” Robyn pauses carefully. “I want people to have my passion when I can’t work anymore. I mean, ideally. You can’t control what happens after you die. You can’t say, ‘You! You’re gonna be me! And this is what you’re gonna do!’” The self-deemed delegator laughs. “’Cause that’s kind of what I want; what I wish I could do. But I can’t. So I have to set it up the best I can.” She’s had great help in Jenny and her Civvies team—and though health prevents her from being at the shop, that isn’t stopping Robyn from planning the big Civvies grand re-opening bash, styling costumes for her employees from home and envisioning her grand Pan-Am-meets-space-travel theme. “We’re talking about the community: working, volunteering, helping, having fun,” she says. “Everybody’s playing music. I just want so much to see that continue. It’s not because I’m arrogant about it. It’s because I truly believe that Savannah needs it.” “I’m proud,” she affirms. “And I feel very fulfilled and love this town, and love that it got me into so many cool things with music and businesses. And I feel like I was able to be here at a special time...that’s awesome that I got that, and helped made it happen.” “Because when you’re facing death, where do you go? Who do you want to see? Over the Fourth of July weekend, someone disturbed the carefully-marked possible nesting site of a rare leatherback turtle. Volunteers from the Tybee Sea Turtle Project on Saturday’s dawn patrol found that the site’s wooden stakes had been moved during the night and its yellow caution tape repurposed to cordon off a pile of chairs, coolers and bicycles. Tampering with a sea turtle nesting site violates federal and state laws. No suspects have been charged, though Tybee Island Police issued citations to two nearby witnesses for leaving debris on the beach. More than 1,700 sea turtle nests have been identified on the Georgia coast so far this season, including eight on Tybee Island dug out by loggerhead turtles. The vandalized site belongs to a rare leatherback turtle, spotted near the Pier on May 21. Tagged on Wassaw Island in 2011, she is the first leatherback seen on Tybee since 2004. The gentle giant left a body pit that may or may not contain a nest below it. “We’re calling it a ‘possible nesting site’ because because they lay so deep,” says Tammy Smith, coordinator of the Tybee Sea Turtle Project. The biggest threat to their survival is plastic and poisonous debris in the ocean discarded by humans. Turtle advocates ask that if you’re looking to plunk your beach gear and encounter yellow tape wrapped around a series of wooden stakes, find another spot. And don’t forget to collect your garbage at the end of the day. “Picking up all trash and recyclables, removing beach gear, filling holes in the sand, and flattening sand castles are all easy ways to have a direct and positive impact on sea turtle nesting,” urges Cody Shelley of the Tybee Island Marine Science Center. Shelley also reminds that flashlights can confuse nesting mamas and turtle hatchlings. Night visitors to the beach should use a red filter on flashlights (red taillight tape purchased from an auto parts store works well) or download a turtle-friendly red flashlight app to their smartphones. businesses, vacationers, and residents along the beach to turn off exterior lights after 9 p.m. from May through October. Shelley acknowledges that most people are respectful and many want to help. “The best thing beachgoers can do to support sea turtles on Tybee is to make sure our beaches are safe and welcoming.” Smith reports that she and volunteers were able to restake the disrupted area using previous coordinates and original materials and that there was no damage to the leatherback site, which may hatch later this month if there are in fact any eggs. “It’s difficult to determine leatherback nesting habits because we don’t see them very often,” says Smith. “Nevertheless, it’s still very exciting.” cs

Is earth at risk of being destroyed by a supernova? We know some far-off stars like Betelgeuse look highly unstable and could go supernova at any time (this being a relative term). But what about closer to home—say, within 50 lightyears? What if Arcturus burned through all its hydrogen and went supernova? What effect would that have here on earth? —Travis van Dreven WE’VE GOT drought in California, economic crisis in Europe, random mayhem all over, and you’re fretting about supernovas? Well, somebody has to. Luckily, one of our top individuals has already done the spadework. Let me introduce astronomer Martin Beech, author of a 2011 paper, “The Past, Present, and Future Supernova Threat to Earth’s Biosphere.” Short version: you can renew your magazine subscriptions for another year. To set the table for the long version, let’s talk about existential threats. These can be categorized as follows: First order. We may think of these as hundred-year perils, indicating the timeframe within which the cloacal discharge has a decent chance of encountering the rotary distributor. Examples abound: nuclear war, global warming, resource exhaustion. If the most alarming predictions have yet to become reality, that’s partly because some of the biggest brains in our species have devoted a good chunk of the available clock

the sentient cycles to heading them off. Second order. These are the thousand- to hundred-thousand-year threats. The classic example, brought to mind by my recent column on the subject, is the next ice age, once thought to loom but now indefinitely postponed. Modern humans—people who, with a little cleaning up, you could invite over for an evening of spare ribs and pinochle—have endured at least one such trial already. For now global warming has pushed the return of the glaciers to the back of the freezer, as it were. But there’s much we don’t understand. Who the hell knows? Third order. These are perils that may come to pass in the millions or tens of millions of years. Here we’re talking about giant asteroid strikes, great extinctions (I realize one can cause the other), and other cataclysms that permanently affect the planet and everything living on it. So far as we know, no such event has occurred within human experience. That said, there’s good evidence these things have happened, and they might again. Fourth order. These are disasters that may strike within the hundreds of millions to billions of years—“very low probability, high-consequence problem[s],” as Professor Beech puts it. This is the territory he’s staked out. In the paper referred to above, he makes the following observations: • A typical supernova must occur within 10 parsecs (about 33 light-years, or 192 trillion miles) of earth to have any noticeable effect on terrestrial life. The closest star that’s on track for supernovadom, IK Pegasi (a binary pair, actually), is 46 parsecs away; Betelgeuse, considered the star likeliest to go supernova next, is 197 parsecs distant. Arcturus, since you asked, is 11 parsecs away. Seeming implication: don’t worry about it. • Not so fast. No supernova candidates are within striking distance of us now. However, as the stars wheel through the cosmos over astronomical time, some may come within range. • Another cosmic peril is gamma-ray bursts (GRBs), focused beams of highenergy radiation thought to be thrown off

by, among other things, massive supernovas. GRBs have a lethal range of 1,000 parsecs. The GRBs we detect (they’re quite common) come from galaxies much further away and so are harmless. However, if (a) a massive star within 1,000 parsecs of us were to go nova, and (b) said nova produced a GRB, and (c) said GRB were pointed in our direction, earth would be smoked. • What are the chances? Professor Beech calculates that, “over the remaining life of the biosphere”—that is, the roughly two billion years he thinks we’ve got left before our dying sun snuffs out earthly life—we may get belted by one GRB and 20 supernovas, or roughly one every 100 million years. Indeed, earth may have already gotten smacked a few times. • But—a very big but, if I may speak frankly—we don’t know this for a fact. Although scientists have conjectured that this or that turning point in earth’s history stemmed from the planetary surface having been crisped by a close-up supernova, evidence confirming this is lacking. (A few supernovas have been spotted in historical times, but all were at harmless distances.) In other words, the risk posed by supernovas and GRBs is entirely theoretical. Granted, theory is what scientists do. Professor Beech concedes the threat is “not one of immediate concern,” immediate being defined as within the next several million years. However, in his view that’s no reason to put the matter out of our minds. He think it’s worth looking near other pre-nova or just-past-nova stars for signs of largescale astroengineering projects constructed by advanced civilizations attempting to shield themselves from incineration. We’ll let the professor brood about that. As for you, Trevor: If you want to have the occasional palpitation about giant asteroids, go for it. But cross supernovas off your list. cs

As a pioneer Japanese robotics developer observed, robots that become too humanlike tend to disgust rather than satisfy. Hence, the more lifelike McMullen makes his RealDolls, the more likely the customer is to be creeped out rather than turned on — perhaps forcing the virtuoso McMullen to leave enough imperfection to reassure the customer that it’s just a doll.

(Nine men were convicted, but none served a lengthy sentence.) Pitcairn has resumed being an island paradise, and in May its laconic governing council voted on a sex issue: It legalized gay marriage, even though, according to a June Associated Press report, no one had asked, and only one person had ever identified as gay. Creepoid moved from Philly to Savannah on July 4, 2014. Between heavy touring and making the move back to their hometown a few months ago, they spent their time in the Lowcountry working with Peter Mavrogeorgis at Savannah’s own Dollhouse Studios to make one of the best records of 2015 so far. Released June 23 on Collect Records, Cemetery High Rise Slum’s hyped arrival has been met with widespread praise—personally, it hasn’t left my turntable since I snagged a copy from Graveface. The band’s making their way back through SAV on tour, celebrating with an album release party at Hang Fire. Until then, let’s sit down and have a listen, shall we? This was the first long-player I’ve heard from Dollhouse—Mavrogeorgis has certainly proven his and his studio’s abilities in the shorter form, producing excellent EPs for locals Hot Plate, Boy Harsher, and Whaleboat. Cemetery High Rise Slum goes above and beyond expectations: all muscle and care from start to finish. There’s a certain kind of seductive haziness that Mavrogeorgis is an expert at capturing—before, it was best evidenced in the chilling textures of Boy Harsher’s Lesser Man EP. Here, he has managed to gently pull apart Creepoid’s trademark grime and fuzz to reveal beautifully pained guitar parts and brutally commanding bass. Sean Miller and Anna Troxell’s vocals are deftly handled, gliding like flim on the surface of the song. A melody is never buried in the mix and simultaneously never outgrows a song’s core—when vocals build, the song sprawls and thickens with them. In comparison to 2014’s Creepoid and 2012’s Horse Heaven, Cemetery High Rise Slum seems to best capture the way the band contracts and expands, the push and pull of gentle and ferocious, light and dark—their ammo as a band.

JULY Creepoid returns to Hang Fire! Photo by Jammi York Creepoid’s members are pros at stretching the gauze of shoegaze. It’s wispy and evocative in the intro to “Fingernails,” both pretty and jarring on “Worthless & Pure,” which chips angularly at otherwise dreamy guitars, allowing just the right amount of discomfort. It’s downright furious as songs like “Tell the Man” storm the castle with torches blazing. The latter moves like twinkling lights peering at the end of a murky tunnel—sketchy and ambivalent, it’s an incredible demonstration of the band’s ability to build an unstoppable wall of sound. “Tell the man I’m here, tell him my name,” Miller taunts, dripping in Lou Reed-style sardonicism before plunging into bleary, immersive fury. More than anything, Cemetery High Rise Slum marks Creepoid truly coming into its own sound. The influences may stand boldly—My Bloody Valentine, of course, certain shades of Sonic Youth, Nirvana (that big splash of an intro in “Dried Out” is the exact chill I get in the build in “All Apologies,” strikingly similar in the mood, heft, and tone)—but there’s something pronouncedly “now” about the way Creepoid does things. That blend of disillusionment and guitar tone screams 2015: this isn’t a nostalgic sound (maybe with the exception
of “Shaking,” which feels like it should be played in some cobwebbed ballroom while couples in chiffon and silk slow dance gloomily [favorite track, hands down]). Some reviews have mentioned a pronounced Southern Gothic feel in the record, attributed to the band’s time in Savannah. There’s definitely an air of—dare I say it— swampiness. Not in the Swamp Cabbage, blues-twangy way, not in the Black Tusk way, either: the band may be in Philly, but this is a Savannah summer record—it feels like those 111-degree heat index days, the sweat that never dries. It’s restless, it’s dissatisfied—with love (the cripplingly stunning “Shaking”), with suburbanism (see opener “American Smile,”) with our ability as humans to screw everything up for ourselves and others. Don’t let the ‘90s influences lead you to believe that Cemetery High Rise Slum is the stuff of slackers: Creepoid is on the attack, foaming at the mouth and clawing through it all. CS

New York Disco Villains, Pussy Launcher @The Jinx
A “multimedia carnival rock extravaganza,” New York Disco Villains may seem fresh outta the Coney Island Sideshow, but they’re actually from a place perhaps even weirder, wilder, and more bewilderingly inspiring than that neon peninsula: Columbia, South Carolina. The four-piece, comprised of vocals, keys, drums, and guitar, lands somewhere on a spectrum anchored by the B-52s and They Might Be Giants: think delightful absurdity, whimsical, circus-inspired keys, steeped in B-movies for a fortnight. Pussy Launcher is a newish project from Nicole Edge and Ty Watkins (both of SAV surf group The Wave Slaves) and Alexandra Mitchell. Mitchell and Edge were bandmates in garage-punk trio Free Candy a few years back; their reunion marks a return to Free Candy’s penchant for irreverence and zany fun. Guitarist Watkins’ history with Atlanta ska band Hermits of Suburbia brings its own flair— the songs are punchy, goofy, and certainly not for the easily offended. Saturday, July 11, 10 p.m., $7

A six-piece sibling-led band hailing from Orlando, Thomas Wynn & the Believers take Wynn sounds like John Fogerty fronting a soul band—it’s gritty, thrilling stuff that laces classic rock with R&B. You’re certainly not going to be able to sit still for it, so put on your comfiest shoes, don’t TOTALLY gorge yourself on the scrumptious luncheon before you, and get ready to cut the rug, er, yard. Though the name may evoke images of prim ladies and parasols, The Southern Belles are anything but. The Richmond, Virginia-based band of beards blend Southern rock, funk, jazz, and psychedelic rock influences on their sophomore record, Close to Sunrise, released just last month. Recorded and produced by Bryan Walthall at The legendary Sound of Music Studios (acts as diverse as Lamb of God, Amos Lee, and Hanson have recorded there), Close to Sunrise shows the band deftly combining the swagger of New Orleans big band and jazz with thick, ‘70s-style guitar riffs, organ strains, and harmonies into seven groovy tracks. Cuts like “Jungle” are best described as smooth, nudging up against elevatorinspired guitar parts; the band always manages to bring in a danceworthy beat, arpeggiated guitar and keys dueling one another in a hypnotizing fashion. “Soul Shaker” is pure fun with huge horns and jam band sensibility; folks will certainly be shaking it for this one.

One hell of a bill, this five-band lineup has kind of turned into a mini No Control Fest/ EP release for Cusses’ Here Comes the Rat EP. Seriously, this is a really good show if you like rock ‘n’ roll, so get there early and stay ‘til the wee hours. Repping Savannah, we’ve got, of course, Cusses, who will be giving out a free CD with every entry. Here Comes the Rat is a teaser of songs from their Golden Rat LP, and it’s a fine sampling of the feverish and dynamic full-length. After a month off, Crazy Bag Lady had an explosive return at Southern Pine Company, opening for Fucked Up—it’s good to see them back in action. Generation Pill are always a treat, and, now that all members are over 21, are regulars on the Hang Fire bracket. Charleston band Fiasco comes through from time to time; it’s good to see them back. And Greensboro’s The Bronzed Chorus are frequent Cusses bill sharers—the dancey post-rock duo is super-fun live.

Deanna Greif, who plays Kate, says “Shakespeare is timeless. It’s easy to suit his words to any time period. “We came from the perspective of Kate and Petruchio being alpha personalities. And she wants to be in charge and he kind of wants to show her that neither one can be in charge.” However, as Connect reported a few months ago when auditions for Shrew were announced, this is no typical repurposed Shakespeare. Taming of the Shrew is the inaugural play in an ambitious chronological three-year Shakespeare cycle from Savannah Shakes, beginning in the years immediately postWorld War II and moving all the way up to the present day. “For example, we’re doing Hamlet set in the Beatnik ‘50s, Much Ado About Nothing in the Madmen-era ‘60s, and Henry V during Vietnam,” says Lynne. The plan is to alternate comedies like Shrew in the summer, with bigger productions of tragedies in the fall. Soucy, a two-decade local theatre veteran, says another goal of the company is to spur a rebirth in the community Shakespeare spirit, such as Savannah experienced during the days of City Lights Theatre under the direction of Jim Holt and Jody Chapin. “Every year we’d hold auditions for Shakespeare in the Park, and tons of people who weren’t normally a part of the theatre scene showed up on the doorstep wanting to contribute their talents,” recalls Soucy. “The very thing we were hoping to achieve with Savannah Shakes was bringing people together to marvel at the work of Shakespeare, and have this great sense of community about the show. And it worked like a charm,” he says. Lynne adds, “And Shrew was a great place to start. IT’S THE middle of summer and, well …. what better time to stage Shakespeare’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream, eh? Hey-ooooo. Except Savannah Stage Company is doing no ordinary production of the Bard’s beloved mélange of love, lust, fairies, and knuckleheaded “mechanicals.” This show upstairs at Ampersand has a cast of only six actors, taking on 19 roles. Not a typo: Nineteen roles. The cast comprises Cree Michelle Rodgers, Evan Goetz, Sarah Alice Michael, Wesley Pridgen, Leah Coleman and John C. Arnold. “Watching the actors take on the different roles is almost a show in and of itself,” says guest director David McCall of the adaptation by Carrie Smith Lewis. For example, a single actor portrays one of the four young lovers at the heart of the play, one of the loveable mechanicals, and a character from the fairy world. “We do the show basically in the round, so there are no hiding places to do costume changes,” says McCall. Still, with the blistering pace the actors have to keep up, costumes are the least of their worries. “We don’t have full costumes pieces—we use just enough costuming to suggest each character. We want to force the actors to discover the character through physicality,” McCall says. “The showpiece of this production is the acting itself. I don’t want anybody feeling burden as actor to have to deliver a whole backstory for all these characters on top of them also being told, oh yeah, you have to wear a gangster’s hat, or something like that.” McCall says the breakneck speed and the unconventional staging “fit into what Savannah Stage Company is all about: transparency and being accessible. We do everything
A recent rehearsal shot, featuring 4/6 of the cast! right there in front of God and country.” For those who don’t know the convoluted plot of A Midsummer Night’s Dream, it centers on two pairs of hormonal young folk in an unnamed dream world partially inhabited by Amazons and fairies. Demetrius and Lysander and Hermia and Helena take turns falling in love with each other, influenced by the magical meddling of the fairies—chiefly the iconic and, well, puckish character of Puck. A running gag/subplot, which usually gets most of the laughs in the play, features a group of inept “mechanicals” rehearsing a play-within-the-play. The setting is sort of Ancient Greecemeets-the-Shire, though McCall says “It’s kind of a time in and of itself. We avoid saying where it is specifically—we like to say it’s a ‘once upon a time kind of place.’” This production of Midsummer Night’s Dream is unique in another way as well. SO I GET a phone call the other day from a Peruvian chick friend, Melina, all excited and talking fast about this new place out on Johnny Mercer. That was the first surprise. She’ll tell you plainly she’s never been all that into Mexican food—not really unusual since the two cuisines are pretty different—but here she is giving them a super-big shout-out. Second surprise: Where? Isn’t that the Oyster House? OK, so even a foodie geek like me can be a teensy bit behind on the island skinny. Rio Bravo is pretty new, just having opened their doors at the end of March and secured their alcohol licenses in mid-May. Sitting in the corner of the shopping center on the eastside of Johnny Mercer, across the street from Kroger, they’re easy to find, and in case of dim night vision, look for the strings of bright Mexican paper- lace hanging outside and the pink glow of lights in the foyer. The owner—and bartender—José Ramirez will make you feel right at home, and if he’s busy pouring drafts, well, one of the other four brothers will be happy to serve you. That’s right, Los Cinco Hermanos Ramirez take good care of their patrons, and a friendly, jolly group of guys they are too. José, Abel (and his wife Ana at the register), Omar, Urivel and Alejandro are workin’ that party Mexicano vibe with big smiles to welcome all who come seeking some downhome Tex Mex goodness. The other two hermanos, Rolando and Luis, have opened a Jalapeños out in Statesboro, so, if you like their food you’ll find some similarity in the menu here. The two restaurants are the Ramirez brothers’ first family venture; they spent years learning the trade after they arrived here, en masse, from Guerrero, Mexico and are very happy to at last have their own places. If you’re gonna work your butt off in the restaurant biz, it’s always better if your own name is on the deed. After talking with them, I can see that joy in their attitude and their eagerness to please their customers. 26 I sat in the bar area where a big birthday
celebration was going on— Gringolandia olé!—and mused upon their raucous, happy group, ordering dish after dish and even asking for the “special” menu. Now, many Mexican places (and Chinese as well) have this hidden away for those in the know. It usually offers special dishes that most Americans wouldn’t cotton to, but, by golly, they know their home folks are gonna ask for. When I heard the party-goers call for it I had to ask to see it too! Only five items at the moment, but this little menu contains a distinct core of authenticity—if you want to try something besides the usual tacos, quesadillas and burritos, dive into this: aguas frescas— fresh juices like tamarindo and jamaica (hibiscus) as well as horchata (sweet rice milk); tres generaciones (a Guerrero dish), made with grilled chicken, pork and shrimp; caldo de camarron (rich seafood soup with shrimp); mojarra frita (whole, flash-fried tilapia, well-seasoned, crispy and delicious!) and the last—street tacos. When I asked my server (hermano Alejandro), what this entailed, I heard the magic words, “tacos de lengua”! If you’ve never tried it—“de lengua” means ‘tongue —it’s not what you’re envisioning. This traditional dish of beef tongue braised in garlic and onions, finely chopped and served with sliced radish, fresh cilantro and minced onion, topped with salsa verde and rolled up in a warm corn tortilla….well, it’s just heavenly. equally appreciative guests. Magic Mike XXL is a breezy, all-inclusive treat. It’s sexy, it’s stylish, it’s well-paced (and the dance routines exceptionally wellchoreographed), and it’s unexpectedly prowoman, treating the female characters as respectfully as the male strippers do and reminding moviegoers that carnal pleasures aren’t only for the hot young thangs among us (props also to Mike’s view of God).
OOO The most shocking surprise of the summer season, Magic Mike XXL is that rare sequel that improves on the original. Many will disagree, given that the 2012 Magic Mike was a critical darling (largely due to the presence of the revered Steven Soderbergh as director) and commercial hit (largely—solely? — due to the presence of all those rippling bods). Yet that first flick frequently left me shrugging, with a plot that was often more soapy than gritty. The solution in this second installment? Remove the plot completely! Or so it feels, as this outing offers little more than a road trip taken by Mike (Channing Tatum) and his fellow male strippers to a Myrtle Beach competition, with a couple of stops along the way. One is at an establish-

O It’s a toss-up as to what reigns as the most risible element in Terminator Genisys, the fifth—and flimsiest—film in the deathless series (with two more installments already being planned!). There’s the out-of-leftfield reason given as to why the Terminator played by Arnold Schwarzenegger no longer looks like the young(ish) cyborg from past pictures but instead looks like a refugee from a Miami nursing home. There’s the fact that Arnie’s Terminator, a character that in past incarnations inspired fear and awe, is now called the decidedly nonthreatening “Pops” by those around him. There’s the casting of Game of Thrones’ Emilia Clarke as Sarah Connor, whose chirpy demeanor makes this often feel like Teen Beach Terminator. There’s the mere sight of Jai Courtney once again attempting to act. And then there’s that off-screen bit of hilarity: the fact that series creator James Cameron has taken to the press circuit to rave about this piece of junk. It’s a shame to see this once-great property sink to such a depressing low. The first two films are acknowledged classics, the third fell a bit short but was still a valiant—and respectful—effort by all concerned, and the fourth (Terminator Salvation) remains an underrated piece of Enjoy all the fine acting and amazing cinematography in Magic Mike XXL

sci-fi sizzle (yes, I’m one of those 12 people on the planet who actually enjoyed it; the autograph line forms to the right!). Terminator Genisys exists for no other reason than to line studio coffers, which of course is the raison d’etre of many an unnecessary sequel. But a film can be an unwanted follow-up and manage not to destroy everything that preceded it through its addition of daft new wrinkles to the story frame. I mean, Jurassic World is pretty needless, but at least the filmmakers didn’t elect to reveal that the dinosaurs were actually cleverly disguised aliens from outer space—the sort of narrative pirouette made here. Perhaps not since Alien 3 have I felt a sequel so betrayed everything that came before it. Normally, my reviews are 100% spoilerfree, but since even the image on the poster reveals the big “twist” in this picture, it hardly makes me Ed Snowden if I proceed with less caution than usual. As before, the John Connor of the future ( Jason Clarke) sends Kyle Reese (Courtney) back to 1984 to prevent the Terminator (Arnie in CGIenhanced younger mode a la Jeff Bridges in Tron: Legacy) from killing Sarah Connor (Emilia Clarke), a waitress who will eventually become a warrior as well as a savior of humanity. But wait! The timeline is in flux, alternate realities exist, and Kyle discovers that Sarah is no longer a mousy woman but already a full metal badass, having been trained since childhood by the good Terminator (the big guy again). The noodling of time has also resulted in the appearance of both a liquidy T-1000 (the G.I. Joe series’ Byunghun Lee) and a cop who transforms into J.K. Simmons when the movie picks back up in 2017. The shift to the 21st century also leads to an encounter with a similarly time-traveling John Connor, who has been assimilated by the villainous operating system Skynet with some uncredited assistance continues on p. 28

childhood home in Minnesota to a ramshackle abode in San Francisco—a move dictated by her dad’s efforts to get his startup business off the ground—it’s hard for Joy to keep Sadness from not only affecting Riley’s current mood but also infecting the shimmery orbs that house her most precious memories. An accident results in Joy and Sadness being ejected from the control center, and it’s at this point that the movie really takes off, both visually and philosophically. Riley’s at a crucial, critical age for any young person, waving goodbye to childhood innocence and about to undergo changes that will make her feel like a stranger both in her own body and in a world that suddenly seems a lot more complicated. from the Borg. With John Connor now compromised, can Jean-Luc Picard be far behind? Despite the Herculean efforts by Cameron to make all the time travel material believable in the first two films, there were some obvious holes, but we didn’t mind because the results were so damn entertaining. Bereft of genuine excitement, this entry can’t hide the rampant ludicrousness. Worse, though, is the obvious miscasting in most of the key roles. Jason Clarke probably comes off best, even if he’s not allowed to display as many acting chops as he flexed in Zero Dark Thirty and Dawn of the Planet of the Apes. Schwarzenegger seems like a parody of his former self, and the less said about the monotonous Courtney, the better. The biggest error arrives in the selection of Emilia Clarke. Linda Hamilton was just perfect as the original Sarah Connor, and we could easily believe this woman tossing off the shackles of her meek demeanor and crippling insecurities and emerging as a formidable soldier. By contrast, Clarke comes off as a girl playing grownup, and when she utters an iconic line like, “Come with me if you want to live,” it’s like watching a Saved By the Bell cast member tackling a school play. When Hamilton grunted, “You’re terminated, fucker” in the 1984 classic, it provided an empowering thrill; when Clarke mutters, “Bite me” in this new one, it provides an embarrassed titter. Clearly, in both its casting and its storyline, Terminator Genisys resembles nothing so much as a baby downing palatable food and regurgitating it as a lumpy, smelly mess.
The charm of Ted is that it never took itself too seriously; the problem with Ted 2 is that it does. As Ted fights for his rights, MacFarlane turns up the drama, seeking by any means necessary—even acquiring the services of Morgan Freeman to play a civil-rights lawyer—to compare Ted’s plight with that of other persecuted groups in this country, such as blacks and gays. Still, what counts most in a comedy is the laugh ratio, and Ted 2 comes out blazing and rarely runs out of ammo. Ted and John are as likably lunk-headed as ever, Seyfried’s Samantha matches up nicely with the guys, and at least two of the cameo appearances really deliver. Plus, any movie that stages its climactic set-piece at Comic Con clearly has its furry finger on the pop-culture zeitgeist.
franchise. Trevorrow doesn’t flub the assignment— the film is generally well-paced and contains a handful of satisfying set-pieces—but neither does he imprint it with anything resembling a personal touch. The original Jurassic Park looked, felt and moved like a Steven Spielberg joint; conversely, Jurassic World seems like it could have been made by any Tom, Dick or Colin. Chris Pratt is Owen, who works at Jurassic World as a combo dinosaur wrangler and velociraptor whisperer. Like his filmic forefathers Sam Neill and Jeff Goldblum, he’s not sure man should be messing around with nature—in this case, creating a new and improved dinosaur meant to be bigger and bolder than anything that’s ever walked the earth. Having learned nothing from the lessons imparted via the aborted Jurassic Park— namely, that out-of-control dinosaurs love to snack on humans—the scientists, capitalists and paleontologist powers-that-be overseeing Jurassic World ignore all modes of common sense and soon find their baby, the so-called Indominus Rex, wreaking havoc all over the themed island. Other dinosaurs also manage to break free, and soon there are fatalities galore. As young brothers Zach and Gray, visiting their Aunt Claire and becoming subject to the most dino-destruction, Nick Robinson and Ty Simpkins are required to play perpetually irksome kids, the sort of brats you wish will eventually be used by some immoral adult as a bite-size distraction for the rampaging beasts. And the fine actor Vincent D’Onofrio, who first made his mark as a military grunt in Stanley Kubrick’s 1987 Full Metal Jacket, here engages in Full Metal Raptor, playing a gung-ho security head who wants to train dinosaurs to serve as soldiers in overseas combat situations. Yes, it’s as ridiculous as it sounds, and D’Onofrio’s part requires him mainly to act pompous and spout nonsensical dialogue. But let’s face it: Audiences are coming to see dinosaurs, not people, and in that respect, the film delivers the goods a decent amount of the time. The lovingly crafted critters seen in the ’93 model have naturally given way to CGI counterparts, but for the most part, the effects work proves to be potent, with enough bravura sequences (the aquatic mosasaurus maneuvers, the pterodactyl attack) to satiate the faithful.
