COVER STORY
CXO MAGAZINE, APRIL 2024
In the wake of her mother's diagnosis with a rare form of Alzheimer's disease, Jenna Anderson and her brother embarked on a relentless journey.
Seeking consultations with top-tier medical professionals, engaging with pioneering researchers, and exploring every conceivable treatment and procedure, her quest wasn't just fueled by hope but by an insatiable thirst for understanding.
Through these extensive explorations, a transformative realization dawned: Disease, in almost all instances, is preventable. "No one should have to undergo the trials we experienced," she shares. And so, the inception of Kihealth wasn't merely a business endeavor; it was a manifestation of a deeply personal commitment. "It's easy to talk about change, but we want to create a whole company dedicated to arming people with the knowledge they deserve to actually prevent disease," Jenna emphasizes. Thus, Kihealth was born - an entity challenging the status quo of reactive healthcare and placing prevention at its core.
Representing life force, growth, and energy, Kihealth wasn't just about offering diagnostics. It was about empowering individuals with knowledge, tools, and support to take control of their health. "The best way to fight disease wasn’t merely to treat it, but to anticipate and prevent it," she stressed. In the rapidly evolving healthcare landscape, Kihealth occupies a unique position at the intersection of disease prevention and consumer-centric retail solutions. Central to its offerings is the Transformative Preventive Diagnostics (TPD) suite, the first market-ready solution addressing key areas such as Diabetes, Gut Health, and Auto-immune disorders.
Key features of Kihealth's Transformative Preventive Diagnostics include:
● Empowering consumers to understand and actively participate in their disease prevention journey.
● Early detection of diabetes, years before it manifests in elevated HbA1c levels.
● Affordable retail price point (~$200) , making early detection and prevention accessible to a broader market.
● A vast addressable market of over 30 million prospective adults in the US and 73 million adolescents
With over 50% of the adult population in the US at high risk of developing diabetes, heart disease, or autoimmune disorders, and approximately 33% unaware of their risk, Kihealth's transformative solutions offer a beacon of hope in the quest for preventive healthcare.
Revolutionizing Preventive Healthcare with Innovative Diagnostics
Amidst the backdrop of alarming statistics revealing the preventable nature of up to 40% of annual deaths, Kihealth emerges as a change agent in the healthcare landscape. Positioned at the forefront of the diagnostic industry, Kihealth is primed to address this urgent need with its groundbreaking early detection diabetes diagnostic tool—a market projected to reach $42 billion by 2025.
CXO MAGAZINE , APRIL 2024 15
Pioneering preventative health and predictive health modeling, Kihealth introduces the first-ever early detection diabetes test, providing actionable data before symptoms manifest. Developed and patented at Yale University, this technology revolutionizes diabetes and metabolic disorder management by identifying risks before symptoms emerge, offering a pathway to significant health and cost benefits.
"Our mission is to deliver healthcare directly to those lacking primary care, and our diagnostics, priced under $200, are poised for widespread adoption," states Jenna. With a commitment to accessibility and affordability, Kihealth aims to bridge the gap in healthcare access, particularly for underserved populations.
Data and artificial intelligence (AI) form the backbone of Kihealth's innovative approach.
"We leverage clinical biomarkers to predict the risk of chronic diseases, marrying clinical data with proven reference ranges to determine overall risk scores," Jenna explains. As more data points accumulate, the predictive power of these scores increases, enabling personalized interventions tailored to individual needs.
Despite being in the pre-launch phase, Kihealth's screening tools hold the promise of preventing children from suffering from Diabetic Ketoacidosis (DKA) and reducing the staggering number of preventable deaths attributed to the five leading causes of disease in the US. Through a combination of cutting-edge diagnostics, datadriven insights, and a commitment to preventive healthcare, Kihealth is poised to revolutionize the healthcare landscape, one life at a time.

Together with partners and stakeholders, Kihealth is committed to building a world where health and resilience prevail for generations to come.
Leading Teams in Healthcare Technology
Reflecting on her journey, Jenna identifies three pivotal factors that shaped her leadership style and propelled her into the role of CEO. "These experiences were instrumental in shaping who I am today," she reflects.
Firstly, Jenna emphasizes the significance of assuming leadership roles from a young age. "Starting my first 'summer camp business' at eight years old laid the foundation for my leadership journey," she recalls. Subsequent engagements in student government, Model United Nations, and university community service further honed her leadership skills, setting the stage for future endeavors.
Secondly, Jenna acknowledges the profound impact of mentors and, at times, challenging bosses. "Both groups taught me invaluable lessons," she states. Positive mentors provided guidance and opportunities for growth, while encounters with less-than-ideal leadership illuminated the importance of effective leadership practices.
Lastly, Jenna underscores the transformative power of failure. "Failure humbles a person and drives self-reflection," she asserts. "It ignites the fire to succeed." Through setbacks and challenges, she learned resilience, adaptability, and the importance of perseverance.
Leading a team in the fast-paced and ever-evolving healthcare technology sector demands adaptability, innovation, and strategic vision. Here are some key approaches Jenna advocates for effectively leading teams in this dynamic environment:
Embrace Change: Cultivate a mindset of adaptability and resilience, encouraging flexibility, creativity, and a willingness to embrace new ideas and technologies.
Set Clear Goals and Priorities: Define clear goals, priorities, and expectations, aligning them with the organization's mission and strategic objectives. Provide regular feedback and guidance to keep the team focused and motivated.
Empower and Trust Your Team: Delegate responsibilities and empower team members to take ownership of their work. Encourage autonomy, creativity, and initiative, while fostering a sense of accountability and responsibility.
Stay Agile and Iterative: Embrace an agile and iterative approach to product development and project management, allowing for rapid experimentation, feedback, and iteration. Encourage a culture of continuous

improvement, where team members learn from both successes and failures and adapt their approach accordingly.
Being a Visionary Leader in Healthcare Innovation
On a personal level, Jenna's fervent commitment to pushing the boundaries of healthcare innovation is deeply rooted in her belief in the transformative power of preventive care and wellness. "Witnessing firsthand the impact of disease on my loved ones, particularly
my mother's battle with dementia at a young age, has fueled my determination to make a difference in the healthcare landscape," she reflects.
Driven by a desire to prevent others from experiencing similar challenges and to improve healthcare outcomes for all, Jenna is motivated by the opportunity to positively impact lives. "Empowering individuals to take control of their health and contributing to a future where healthcare is proactive and preventive is my ultimate goal," she affirms.

Inspired by the endless possibilities to innovate, disrupt traditional paradigms, and create meaningful change, Jenna is fueled by her passion for making a tangible impact in the lives of individuals and communities.
Ultimately, Jenna's personal drive is rooted in her commitment to leaving a lasting legacy of health and wellness for future generations. "It is this sense of purpose and passion that propels me forward in the pursuit of healthcare innovation," she declares, "pushing boundaries and striving for excellence every step of the way." She highlights the importance of staying true to one's mission and values and offers practical advice for aspiring entrepreneurs, including embracing challenges, raising sufficient funds, identifying unmet needs, iterating on solutions, investing in talent, staying resilient, and being open to pivoting when necessary. Jenna's wisdom serves as a guiding light for those navigating the complexities of healthcare technology, fostering innovation, and driving positive change in the industry.

The model of Command and Control is no longer working to engage and motivate employees.
The lessons of the Pandemic uncovered a fundamental truth: individuals no longer seek merely a job— they yearn for meaningful work. They desire recognition for their full spectrum of gifts and talents, not just the ones needed for their role. They want to be acknowledged for their intrinsic value, not solely based on the results they deliver. Above all, they demand that their voices be heard, and their diversity respected.
We are in a time of REBIRTH – a rebirth of HUMANITY. If you look back in History, the Renaissance was also a rebirth of humanity and a time of invention and innovation.
We are in what I call the “NEXT” Renaissance. These times call for leaders who inspire trust, foster innovation, and navigate complexities with resilience. These times call for Renaissance Leaders who are multi-dimensional. They are creative, curious, caring, and collaborative and bring both breadth and depth of talent to their roles. Like Leonardo Da Vinci, they are not Jacks of all Trades; rather, they are Master of Many. They possess an insatiable curiosity to learn, they listen for what’s not being said, and they think like there is no box. They honor the unique brilliance of each team member and foster an environment of belonging that values diversity and respects every voice.
How can we think more like a Renaissance leader? Understanding the Five Core Renaissance Leadership Principles is the first step toward cultivating this mindset. As we dive into each principle, I invite you to engage in the self-reflection questions to explore how
much you embody these traits and where there is room for expansion.
Renaissance Leadership Principle #1: ASK new Questions.
Renaissance Leaders are masters at asking powerful questions. Powerful questions ignite curiosity, open the dialogue, and inspire new thinking. As leaders, it’s so much easier to tell someone what to do, but as soon as we do that, the learning stops there. When the learning stops, organization fail. Developing a culture of curiosity, innovation and belonging
CXO MAGAZINE , APRIL 2024 24
comes not from knowing the answers, but from mastering the art of asking questions.
Recognizing that mastery is a dynamic process rather than a static destination, let's turn the lens inward for self-reflection:
Self-Reflection Questions:
1. On a scale of 1-10, how would you rate your level of curiosity at work and at home?
2. What percentage of time do you find yourself instructing others versus responding with a question to stimulate independent thinking?
3. Consider: What new and thoughtprovoking questions could you ask another today to ignite fresh perspectives and insights?
(HINT: Powerful questions typically start with a “What?” or “How?”)
Renaissance Leadership Principle
#2: HONOR the Diversity (of ideas, perspectives & people)
While asking new questions is pivotal, it is the genuine openness to diverse answers that defines a true Renaissance Leader. Authentic listening becomes the conduit through which diversity
CXO MAGAZINE , APRIL 2024 25
is honored and valued, but it’s not easy. It demands temporarily setting aside one's judgments and instead, creating a space for exploration. When we genuinely listen to respect and not reject, we create a culture of openness, belonging and innovation.
Self-Reflection Questions:
1. In your conversations, how often do you find yourself preoccupied with thinking about your next response rather than fully engaging in the present moment? (p.s. Welcome to being human!)
CXO MAGAZINE , APRIL 2024 26
2. What might you need to let go of to listen free from judgment? (at least for one conversation…at a time)
3. Identify someone you may have been unfairly judging. What is a question you could ask them that comes from a place of genuine curiosity?
Renaissance Leadership Principle #3: CONNECT to Innovate
Renaissance Leaders actively seek advice, solutions and learning from people and domains that are different from them. They recognize the transformative power that happens when they step outside their comfort zone. During the Renaissance period, Lorenzo Di Medici, brought together experts from the arts, literature, engineering, philosophy, and science to tackle monumental challenges. He recognized the wealth of insights diverse minds can offer. When we are willing to connect the unexpected dots, we foster an environment where groundbreaking solutions emerge.
Renaissance Leaders actively seek advice, solutions and learning from people and domains that are different from them
CXO MAGAZINE , APRIL 2024 27
Self-Reflection Questions:
1. Who is most unlike you, someone you would rarely seek advice from?
2. What would it take to reach out and set up a virtual coffee, asking for their advice on a challenge you are facing?
3. What domain area or business is very different from yours? What would be possible if you sought out Executives from that business to mastermind with you?
Renaissance Leadership Principle #4: ACT with Accountability
Renaissance Leaders recognize that taking responsibility for both actions and inactions is paramount for navigating challenges with agility and effectiveness. They acknowledge the impossibility of directly holding someone else accountable; instead, they create an environment that fosters individual ownership. They empower others to take responsibility and report back on their progress, whether they succeed or encounter obstacles. They also recognize that success is a shared pursuit. “If one of us fails, all of us fails.” This principle serves as a linchpin for turning innovative thinking into tangible outcomes.
Self-Reflection Questions:
1. How do you hold yourself and others accountable in your organization?
2. To what extent do you proactively discuss strategies for handling potential challenges, such as missed deadlines, before they arise?
3. Reflect on your post-conversation practices. How often do you engage in discussions about accountability after important actions come out of meetings?
CXO MAGAZINE , APRIL 2024
28
The power to magnify the impact lies in the willingness to share, collaborate, and contribute to a global tapestry of ideas and solutions
Renaissance Leadership Principle #5: MAGNIFY the IMPACT
Implementing great ideas is essential, yet their true power often dissipates if not effectively shared, leveraged, and expanded upon. The true power of an idea lies in its ability to create a
ripple effect. What could be possible if your ideas transcended the boundaries of your immediate team, department, or organization? The power to magnify the impact lies in the willingness to share, collaborate, and contribute to a global tapestry of ideas and solutions.
Self-Reflection Questions:
1. Reflect on recent ideas you've implemented. How might they positively impact individuals or groups outside of your immediate team, organization, or industry?
2. Identify ideas you may be holding closely. Consider the potential benefits if these ideas were shared more broadly.
3. Whose lives or endeavors could be positively influenced by the ideas you currently possess, creating broader benefit for the greater good?
IN CLOSING:
When you implement these Five Core Renaissance Leadership Principles, you foster a culture of authenticity, trust, connection, innovation, and accountability and create an environment where people feel heard, seen, understood, and valued.
Which Renaissance Leadership Principle are you willing to work on this quarter with your team, department, or organization? What if you took it on like an experiment where you cannot fail? You can only learn more about yourself and others and in doing so grow and develop your skills, mindset, talents, and experience.
Feel free to reach out and share your experiences or pose any questions you may have. My virtual door is always open. In the meantime, become the Renaissance Leader these times need us to be.

In the ever-evolving landscape of family offices, a profound shift is underway, with impact investing taking center stage among the NextGen. As the torch passes from baby boomers, who currently hold a staggering $10 trillion in assets under management, to the younger generations, a monumental wealth transfer of $84 trillion in the family office sector alone is anticipated over the next two decades.
The traditional role of family offices in discreetly managing wealth is undergoing a remarkable evolution. The genesis of family offices, historically tailored to meet multifaceted needs, has given way to a more sophisticated approach necessitated by the concentration of wealth among a select few. Demographic shifts, notably the rising influence of millennials and Generation Z, have propelled family offices into a new era characterized by a focus on social impact investing, technology integration, and sustainability.
The impact of this evolution is farreaching, driving family offices to adapt their strategies to align with changing dynamics. Direct investments, co-investments, and venture capital participation have become the norm as family offices seek greater control and understanding of their deployed capital. Noteworthy examples, like The Walton Enterprises family office, showcase the agility and impact that these entities can have across diverse sectors.

artificial intelligence, and cutting-edge tools for optimized investment decisions and enhanced operational efficiency. This intersection of technology and finance positions family offices to navigate complex market conditions with precision.
The implications for the financial sector are significant, as family offices disrupt traditional wealth management institutions. They not only compete for top-tier investment opportunities but also attract talent from established financial firms. The increasing influence of family offices extends beyond capital allocation, shaping corporate governance, fostering sustainable practices, and steering industries through strategic investments and partnerships.
This rise has also led to a reassessment of the traditional fee structure in the wealth management industry. As more families opt for direct investment routes, financial institutions are compelled to recalibrate their fee models to align with the evolving landscape.
Navigating this evolving ecosystem requires financial institutions to adapt to a paradigm shift. The one-size-fits-all approach is no longer viable, with ultra-high-networth families demanding bespoke solutions. Customization, agility, and innovation are paramount. Financial institutions must redefine service offerings, incorporate a broad spectrum of asset classes, provide sophisticated financial planning and advisory services, and embrace digital transformation to remain relevant.
Collaboration and co-innovation are vital components of engaging with family offices. Establishing strategic partnerships with family office aggregator platforms and leveraging technology to offer tailor-made solutions will be instrumental in capturing value in this dynamic landscape. As family offices continue to rise in prominence, their impact on shaping the future of wealth management and investment strategies cannot be overstated.

and royalties, cementing Heartseed's position as a frontrunner in the biotechnology landscape.
A Journey of Hope and Innovation
In his early years, Mutsuki Takano witnessed firsthand the impact of severe asthma on his mother's life. Despite the challenges, she managed her role at a software engineering company, often needing emergency medical attention during asthma attacks. Yet, with access to medication and a supportive healthcare system, she persevered, retiring after a successful career. This experience ignited Takano's belief in the power of medication to empower individuals facing serious illnesses, enabling them to pursue their aspirations.
As Takano reflects on his tenure overseeing operations at Mitsui's Venture Capital division in the US, he recalls encountering numerous biotechnology companies addressing unmet medical needs on a global scale. "I saw mainly US companies, sometimes EU or Israel or China, but not so much about Japan companies," Takano remarks. However, Takano's journey took a transformative turn upon joining Heartseed in 2020. "Our CEO, Dr. Fukuda, showed me a video of living, beating cardiomyocytes[1] derived from induced pluripotent stem cells[2]. It was the first time I had seen such synchronicity among cardiomyocytes, sparking immense excitement within me," Takano shares.
At Heartseed, their corporate mission of "Opening the door to the treatment of heart disease through regenerative medicine" drives their innovation. Guided by core values collectively termed as "Heartseed Value," the company fosters a culture of pioneering spirit, self-driven innovation, prioritization of life, continuous growth, and collaborative teamwork.
CXO MAGAZINE , APRIL 2024 47
Navigating the Frontier of Cell Therapy
In the realm of cell therapy, there exist two distinct approaches to treatment, differing in their intended duration of cell presence within the patient's body. Takano explains, "The first, exemplified by mesenchymal stem cells, involves the infusion of cells that naturally dissipate within a short timeframe, thus requiring lower safety standards and no need for immune suppressants."
In contrast, the second approach, epitomized by Heartseed, aims to prolong the presence of cells within the patient's body significantly, necessitating stringent safety measures. Heartseed's commitment to safety is underscored by requirements such as demonstrating one year of tumorigenicity[3] in animal models following cell infusion, in addition to conducting comprehensive long-term toxicity studies.
"The intricacies of the second type of cell therapy demand advanced cell technology to

ensure both safety and stable manufacturing processes," Takano emphasizes. Heartseed’s focus lies in producing ventricular-specific cardiomyocytes exclusively, mitigating the risk of arrhythmias that may arise from contamination with arterial or pacemaker cells.
Takano elaborates, "We have achieved a remarkable purity of 99+% in our cardiomyocyte production, thanks to our innovative metabolic selection process." This process, developed to eliminate non-cardiomyocyte cells, relies on the differential metabolic requirements of cardiomyocytes versus other cell types. "By implementing this strategy," Takano explains, "we can ensure the safety and efficacy of our final product, even at scale, facilitating our entry into global markets."
Highlighting Heartseed's lineage, Takano praises CEO Dr. Fukuda's groundbreaking research. "Dr. Fukuda, an esteemed emeritus professor at Keio University, boasts a distinguished career in this field," Dr. Fukuda's pioneering work, including the successful differentiation of bone marrow mesenchymal stem cells[4] into cardiomyocytes in 1999, laid the foundation for Heartseed's inception in 2015. Leveraging over two decades of research and clinical experience, Heartseed emerged from Keio University with unparalleled expertise and a wealth of cell-treating innovations.
Revolutionizing Heart Failure Treatment
The unique characteristics of cardiomyocytes beating within the left ventricle of the human heart distinguish them from other cell types. Unlike cells in tissues such as hair and skin, cardiomyocytes lack self-proliferation capability, rendering the heart vulnerable to irreversible damage in conditions such as heart failure.
CXO MAGAZINE , APRIL 2024 49
"At any instance of heart damage, such as myocardial infarction, cardiomyocytes perish, leading to a gradual decline in heart function," Takano explains. "Despite advancements in guideline medications, such as the 'Fantastic 4'—comprising β-blockers, ACEIs/ARNIs, MRAs, and SGLT2is—that can improve heart performance, there remains a therapeutic plateau after maximum dosage administration."
Takano underscores the limited options for endstage heart failure patients, noting, "While heart transplants offer a potential solution, the number of eligible patients is restricted. Alternatively, Left Ventricle Assist Devices (LVADs) provide mechanical support, but they come with significant burdens and risks, including the need for caregiver assistance in case of device malfunction."
Highlighting the substantial unmet medical needs in severe heart failure, Takano emphasizes, "The progressive decline in living cardiomyocytes directly correlates with diminishing heart function." Heartseed envisions a solution to severe heart failure through 'remuscularization'— the replacement of dead cardiomyocytes with living counterparts. Takano shares, "Our ongoing Phase 1/2 clinical trial for heart failure with reduced ejection fraction (HFrEF) involves the use of spheroids of allogeneic iPS-derived cardiomyocytes. Initial trial results have shown promising signs of cell engraftment and heart function recovery in patients within one year of treatment."
The Synergy of Finance and Innovation
"The intersection of financial management and life-saving treatments is pivotal," asserts Takano. Success in financing activities directly impacts the advancement of clinical trials and research and development efforts. In times of budgetary
CXO MAGAZINE , APRIL 2024 50
constraints, prioritizing key pipelines becomes imperative, aligning with industry norms.
Takano reflects on the multifaceted role of a CFO in a biotech company. "Beyond a deep passion for improving patient outcomes, CFOs must possess a diverse skill set akin to that of a mixed martial artist," he observes. "Navigating investor demands, fluctuating market conditions, and unforeseen emergencies requires agility, resilience, and strategic acumen. Merely possessing technical knowledge is insufficient; past experiences in adversity and a robust spirit are equally vital."
In the realm of HFrEF treatment through Remuscularization therapy, Heartseed stands at the forefront of global competition. Takano proudly states. "With partnership and empowerment by Novo Nordisk for global development, we expect Heartesed Remuscularization therapy would provide transformative solutions to heart failure patients worldwide in future. "
Takano recounts his achievements in financial leadership, highlighting successful equity financing rounds totaling approximately
JPY6 billion and instrumental involvement in the global licensing deal with Novo Nordisk. "While milestones bring temporary satisfaction, the pursuit of growth and innovation remains perpetual," he remarks. "As a biotech company, our focus lies in delivering Remuscularization therapy to heart failure patients, driving towards a future of improved healthcare outcomes."
"With the recent release of one-year initial data from our LAPiS study for advanced heart failure patients, excitement abounds," Takano shares. "We eagerly anticipate the future progress of our clinical trials, poised to bring hope and healing to those in need."
Forging Bonds
In the dynamic landscape of the biotech industry, collaboration among individuals with diverse backgrounds and perspectives is paramount. Takano asserts, "To harness collective efforts effectively, fostering mutual trust emerges as a cornerstone."
Takano reflects on the invaluable lesson imparted by a former mentor during his tenure at

Mitsui & Co.'s Private Equity Division. "Building trust entails three fundamental principles," Takano recalls. "Responsiveness, ensuring timely and accurate responses to the needs of others; Speed, delivering prompt responses aligned with expectations; and Commitment, steadfastly upholding promises made towards realization."
He emphasizes the application of these principles beyond business transactions, particularly in processes such as Due Diligence. "While Due Diligence may seem cumbersome at times, adhering to these principles transforms it into a mutual trust-building exercise,"
Takano explains. "Consistent application of these principles fosters enduring relationships and facilitates smoother interactions with stakeholders."
Drawing inspiration from his mother's journey of balancing career and family responsibilities, Takano underscores the significance of medical innovation. "As a parent myself, I recognize the profound impact of advancing medical treatments on the lives of loved ones," Takano concludes. "I am humbled to contribute, albeit in a small capacity, to the ongoing pursuit of medical innovation."

2024 is here, and we are just about recovering from the AI “glow up” that 2023 brought to education and edtech. For years, those in industry have talked about edtech being ripe for disruption but we have only seen small incremental changes happen over time. The pandemic changes the landscape for everyone
- and reset the stopwatch. So when AI arrived to the masses, I was particularly excited. Even if the industry is globally disjointed by nature of money, curriculum, language, and a host of other things, the injection of an AI lens to the industry is finally changing the gears. This is happening because important larger technology companies, from Alphabet
CXO 56 MAGAZINE , APRIL 2024
With technologies starting to become more accessible, I expect a government, school group to take the plunge to lead the way
to OpenAI to Meta to Anthropic are investing in pushing real life use cases for generative AI. And education is firmly placed as a target industry where AI can do some magic. We are seeing education being transformed from the ground up.
As we acclimatise to this new year, the EdTech sector stands at the cusp of a revolutionary shift. Driven by rapid technological advancements and an ever-evolving educational landscape, this year is poised to witness significant transformations in how we learn and teach. Here are ten predictions that encapsulate the future trajectory of what to expect in EdTech.
1. Inclusive Education Takes Centre Stage
The EU Accessibility Act is applicable to numerous industries but will become a focus of all edtech companies who have users in the European Union. When wholescale legislation affects the EU, the world pulls its socks up - and we will see the change implemented globally from speech-to-text and personalised learning pathways. With 140M people in the EU with a registered disability, this will be a focus and an opportunity for edtech companies who haven’t pushed far enough over the years.
2. The Proliferation of Educational GPTs
With customised GPTs launching at the beginning of the year, expect a content explosion with multiple, customised GPTs being developed and repurposed for very bespoke pathways. Smaller LLMs will cater to all learners, no matter their environment, their level or their diversity. This will result in richer data in how to support student progress over the coming years.
CXO MAGAZINE , APRIL 2024 57
Platforms that facilitate group projects, peer reviews, and interactive discussion forums will be in high demand
3. The Rise of AI-Driven Personalised Learning
2024 will see AI take centre stage in customising education. Imagine a learning environment where AI algorithms not only identify a student's weak areas but also recommend personalised resources and exercises. This AI-driven approach can democratise learning, making quality education accessible to the masses. This promise has come and gone many times before, but, this time, the platforms exist, the investors exist and there’s a maturity in the industry that will make this more likely than not. Every edtech business is announcing something based on AI, so I’m sure we are pushing the boundaries.
4. An Increased Emphasis on Soft Skills Training
I may be biassed, but ten years on from the launch of EtonX, I’m seeing more and more platforms focus on soft skills. Coursera and LinkedIn Learning are already incorporating courses on emotional intelligence, teamwork, and leadership. In 2024, these offerings will
become more sophisticated, using interactive scenarios and real-time feedback to enhance learning outcomes. As the workplace evolves, these skills will be vital for career advancement and personal development, making this shift a strategic response to the demands of the modern job market.
5. Immersive Learning Takes Off
Apple Vision Pro might have set the world into imagination overdrive, but the discounted lower price of Meta Quest 2 can see some in power to start the plunge down immersive education. After many failed attempts, the immersive power of VR and AR could finally transform traditional learning environments, especially in STEM. Imagine biology students exploring the human body in 3D or history classes visiting ancient civilizations virtually. These immersive environments enhance learning experiences, making education more engaging and effective. Technologies like virtual laboratories and augmented reality help students grasp complex concepts. The
CXO MAGAZINE , APRIL 2024 58
impact might be especially strong outside of classrooms, with trade workers benefiting from enhanced training and healthcare workers using immersive solutions. While challenges exist, investor interest is high, making 2024 a transformative year for immersive learning. With technologies starting to become more accessible, I expect a government, school group to take the plunge to lead the way.
6. Expansion of Blockchain in Credentialing
Blockchain's secure and decentralised nature makes it ideal for managing educational credentials. In 2024, expect to see universities and online course providers adopting blockchain to issue tamper-proof certificates. Not new within online courses, blockchain will streamline the verification process for employers, enhancing the credibility and value of online learning. Companies like Accredible are leading the space, but expect more to join as this are starts to take off further
7. Growth of Micro-Credentials
Taking credentialing further, micro-credentials, or bite-sized qualifications, will gain more traction in 2024. These credentials, focusing on specific skills or competencies, cater to the growing need for lifelong learning and continuous professional development. As super-specific skills are being mapped to jobs, companies are already pioneering this trend, offering micro-credentials in areas like AI, data science, and digital marketing.
8. Bigger Tech Partnerships
We will see further entrenchment of “Big Tech” and “AI” in Edtech with partnerships between
edtech companies and AI companies. Education has been the poster child of potential when it comes to AI’s reach and so there will be more experimentation, deeper ties - and potentially an acquisition or two of a traditional education business by an AI-first business. There’ll also be acquisitions and closures as firms are forced to prove scalability.
9. Enhanced Data Security and Privacy Measures
With the increasing use of digital learning tools, data security and privacy will become paramount in 2024. SOC 2 or ISO27001 compliance will become the norm as edtech companies will invest more in secure data storage and encryption technologies, ensuring that student data remains confidential and protected from cyber threats.
10. Collaborative Learning Platforms
The trend towards collaborative learning will continue to grow. Platforms that facilitate group projects, peer reviews, and interactive discussion forums will be in high demand. This approach not only enhances learning outcomes but also prepares students for the collaborative nature of the modern workplace.
Conclusion
In 2024, the landscape of education will be markedly different, driven by the innovations and advancements in EdTech. As educators, learners, and technology enthusiasts, embracing and adapting to these changes will be crucial. The potential of EdTech to transform education is immense, and 2024 will be a pivotal year in realising this potential, shaping the future of learning for the coming decades.

Unveiling the Power of Individual Motivation
LaPorta's acclaimed book, "Ignite the Passion...", earned recognition as one of Amazon's top 20 motivational books, offering profound insights into the intricacies of motivation. Reflecting on the inspiration behind the book, LaPorta shares, "Motivation is all about people. Not just the masses but the individual lives you are motivating." Central to his message is the understanding that effective motivation requires a personalized approach tailored to the unique needs of each individual.
Emphasizing the importance of personal motivation, LaPorta highlights the necessity for leaders to first cultivate their own sense of purpose before endeavoring to inspire others. "You have to have clear motivation for yourself before you can even think about motivating others," he asserts, underlining the pivotal role of authentic leadership in igniting passion within teams.
CXO MAGAZINE , APRIL 2024 63
Crucially, LaPorta underscores the significance of identifying what truly motivates each individual. "Every person has that one thing that will bring a smile to their face and motivate them day in and day out," he explains.
Recognizing and embracing these individual drivers is the cornerstone of motivational leadership, fostering deep connections and unwavering loyalty among team members.
LaPorta's humorous take on the customer service industry is exemplified in his book, "Who Hired These People?" Drawing from his experiences as a leader at Disney, LaPorta witnessed firsthand the transformative power of exceptional guest service. "Being a leader for Disney, I embraced the idealism to take care of each and every guest," he recalls.
Driven by a desire to address the pervasive lack of quality service beyond the realms of Disney, LaPorta penned "Who Hired These People?" as a candid exploration of the shortcomings plaguing modern customer experiences. "There was terrible guest service everywhere I went," he laments, recounting encounters with subpar service across various industries.

In the labyrinth of traditional sales approaches prevalent in Japan, success often hinges on sheer volume—more actions, more

With 80% of sales professionals contemplating career changes due to the arduous nature of traditional methods, Sales Marker's solution couldn't be timelier.

Marketing,
The exploration phase in the customer experience journey is like the first chapter of a novel, setting the stage for the narrative that unfolds. This initial phase is where potential customers begin their interaction with a brand, often with a sense of curiosity and a lack of clear direction. It's a critical stage where first impressions are formed and where a brand has the unique opportunity to captivate and engage its audience.
In this phase, customers are akin to travelers in an unfamiliar landscape, searching for a path that leads to their desired destination. For businesses, this represents a chance not only to guide these explorers but also to make a compelling case for why their path is the one worth following. It's an opportunity to differentiate themselves in a crowded marketplace, creating a memorable and impactful first impression. However, the exploration phase comes with its challenges. Customers, faced with an overload of information and choices, can easily become overwhelmed. The digital era has only amplified this, increasing the complexity of how customers interact with and perceive brands.
Real-life Examples
Let me provide a very concrete real-life example to illustrate the challenges of the exploration phase. When I entered the market for a baby stroller, I was met with an unexpected and overwhelming challenge. Far from being straightforward, the process was laden with a surplus of technical details and features. For a new parent like me, without pre-existing preferences or knowledge in this realm, this was particularly daunting.
The multitude of brands bombarded me with information about safety, folding mechanisms, and fabric quality, yet none of this was contextualized for a novice in parenting. Consequently, I found myself embroiled in a tedious process, combing through blogs, visiting stores, and comparing products on various websites to decipher what mattered. The difficulty was compounded by the challenge of separating genuine advice from sponsored content.
This experience underscored a glaring oversight in the customer journey. Despite the predictable needs of new parents, brands missed a crucial opportunity to provide guidance and education. Instead, they chose to overwhelm

CXO MAGAZINE , APRIL 2024 78
with information, complicating the process and hindering the development of customer trust and loyalty. This scenario exemplifies the importance of a well-structured exploration phase in shaping a positive customer experience.
Another real-life story that vividly illustrates the pitfalls of the exploration phase involves my attempt to understand an insurance product. Needing help and clarity, I started with the company's live chat, expecting efficient support. Instead, I was met with a chatbot rigidly offering only predefined options A, B, or C, leaving no room for nuanced inquiries. Unfulfilled, I then called their hotline, only to encounter a similar lack of flexibility in their IVR system. After a 15-minute wait, a human representative finally responded, but frustratingly, they could only direct me back to the website.
This experience highlighted a critical gap in customer support during the exploration phase. Effective communication and personalized assistance were notably absent, quickly diminishing my initial interest in the company. It serves as a stark reminder of the importance of accessible and adaptable customer interactions, especially when potential customers seek specific guidance and understanding of a product or service.
The two stories I've shared are not unique occurrences but rather common examples that you may have encountered yourself. They reflect widespread issues in the exploration phase of customer experience. However, these are just two examples among many prevalent problems. Other frequent challenges include the lack of staff expertise, both in physical stores and online, to answer advanced or nuanced customer questions, or the inefficiency
of filtering mechanisms in online stores that often forces customers to sift through an excessive array of products. These issues, and many others, collectively contribute to a cumbersome and often frustrating exploration phase, underscoring the need for a more thoughtful and customer-centric approach in designing these early interactions.
The Impact
The shortcomings in the exploration phase represent a significant waste for businesses. Companies invest considerable time, effort, and budget into generating traffic to their stores or websites, but when the exploration phase falls short, these resources go to waste. Inadequate information, lack of support, and inefficient product filtering not only deter customer engagement but also lead to potential sales losses and weakened brand loyalty. Customers, overwhelmed or dissatisfied with their experience, may abandon their journey, rendering the initial investment in attracting them futile. Thus, optimizing the exploration phase is essential not only for enhancing customer experience but also for safeguarding business investments and ensuring sustainable growth.
The Solution
The initial step in tackling the exploration phase challenges is for businesses to thoroughly identify the issues within their own customer journey. This involves not just walking in the shoes of their customers to personally experience and test their own processes but also actively seeking feedback from customers. Understanding the flaws in your exploration phase is crucial to knowing what needs to be fixed.

Enhancing the customer support framework with well-informed and responsive teams can make a significant difference
Let's now explore a few practical suggestions that would significantly improve customer experience in most contexts.
Tailoring Product Quizzes and Guides:
Introducing quizzes to help customers articulate their preferences can effectively streamline their decision-making process. Alongside, creating guides segmented by user experience, such as a "Beginner's Guide to Choosing a Stroller" for new parents, helps in simplifying the selection process and making it more approachable for first-time buyers.
Creating Interactive Comparison
Tools and Transparent Content: Implementing interactive tools for side-by-side product comparison enables customers to make wellinformed choices by clearly understanding the key differences. Providing transparent content by linking to unbiased third-party websites also builds trust and aids customers in gaining a better understanding of the products and the market.
Optimizing Customer Support: Enhancing the customer support framework with wellinformed and responsive teams can make a significant difference. Real-time assistance through live chat or consultation services caters to the need for personalized guidance, improving the exploration experience for customers seeking specific information or help.
Balancing
Interface Complexity and
Filtering: Designing an intuitive and userfriendly online interface with efficient filtering options can make navigating through products less overwhelming for customers. Striking the right balance in the complexity of the platform ensures that it is comprehensive yet straightforward to use.
By integrating these practical suggestions into the exploration phase, businesses can offer a more seamless and engaging customer experience, fostering stronger connections and loyalty with their clientele.
