According to you, how has diversity & inclusion evolved in the corporate environment? And what are the negative effects a lack of diversity can have on a corporate team? Diversity and inclusion have undergone significant evolution in the corporate world over the years.

In the past, diversity efforts primarily focused on compliance with regulations and were often seen as a legal obligation. However, today, diversity and inclusion have evolved into a critical business imperative and a source of competitive advantage for organizations. Here are some key ways in which this evolution has taken place:


Many companies now use data and analytics to track their diversity and inclusion efforts. This allows them to identify gaps, set goals, and measure progress more effectively 15

Shift from Compliance to Strategy: Initially, diversity initiatives were driven by legal requirements and the need to avoid discrimination lawsuits. Now, they are recognized as strategic initiatives that can drive innovation, improve employee engagement, and enhance a company’s reputation. Broader Definition of Diversity: The concept of diversity has expanded beyond just race and gender to include dimensions like age, sexual orientation, disability, and more. This broader definition acknowledges

the uniqueness of each individual and their potential contributions. Inclusion Matters: Inclusion has gained prominence alongside diversity. It’s not enough to have a diverse workforce; organizations now strive to create inclusive cultures where every employee feels valued, respected, and empowered to contribute their best. Data-Driven Approaches: Many companies now use data and analytics to track their diversity and inclusion efforts. This allows them

to identify gaps, set goals, and measure progress more effectively. Leadership Commitment: Corporate leaders are increasingly recognizing the importance of setting the tone from the top. They are championing diversity and inclusion efforts and holding themselves accountable for progress. Employee Resource Groups (ERGs): ERGs have become common in many organizations, providing employees with a platform to connect, share experiences, and drive change within the company.

What are the negative effects a lack of diversity can have on a corporate team? A lack of diversity in a corporate team can have several detrimental effects, both on the team itself and the organization as a whole: Limited Creativity and Innovation: Homogeneous teams often struggle to generate creative ideas and innovative solutions. Diversity of thought, stemming from different backgrounds and perspectives, is a catalyst for innovation. Reduced Problem-Solving Capability: Diverse teams tend to be more effective at problem-solving because they bring a wider range of viewpoints to the table. A lack of diversity can lead to groupthink and suboptimal decisions. Decreased Employee Engagement: Employees from underrepresented groups may feel excluded or undervalued in a non-diverse environment, leading to lower engagement, job satisfaction, and retention rates.

Victoria, please brief us about your professional background and areas of interest. I am a 20+ year C-suite executive, almost all of which have been in B2B Professional Services organizations; consulting, technology and outsourced services to Fortune 500 clients. Additionally, I have served on the Board for many organizations, including not-for-profit orgnizations that align closely with my personal passion and values, including supporting new immigrants to the country, children in need, diversity-focused organizations and more. I am also a #1 selling published author and a professional public speaker. I have been very focused on DEI for many years and also around Whole Human Leadership and strong organizational culture. You are a Board of Director at Olive Group Ltd. Can you tell us about this platform and its mission? Olive is an open banking, payments-driven technology for businesses wanting to help customers

reach financial goals by generating new deposits and donations inside of yourexisting customer experiences. What are some of the challenges you’ve encountered while working in the tech industry, and how have you overcome them? Because I didn’t study the field of technology and come with a business background of commercial and operational experience, I have been very focused on identifying client and business challenges and many of my more technical colleagues have focused on “tech for tech” vs problem solving for the clients we’re serving, so I’m often the one challenging the development and the way in which we go to market. It is often received with pushback by the organizations, but with a focus on data and strong performance and client feedback, my strategy and approach is often adopted. Additionally, there still exists significant disparity in technology when it comes to diversity, specifically women in tech. I am very used to being the only, or one of very few, women in the room. Therefore, I have become a very vocal advocate and transformational leader with a heavy focus on creating greater diverse, equitable and inclusive workplaces and communities for those interested in the field of technology and I have been fortunate to be recognized for this work with multiple awards and recognition. What are the top 3 must-have skills required to be a successful entrepreneur? Being a successful entrepreneur requires a combination of skills, traits, and qualities. While

there are many important skills, here are the top three must-have skills for an entrepreneur: Adaptability and Resilience: Entrepreneurship is filled with uncertainty and challenges. The ability to adapt to changing circumstances and bounce back from failures or setbacks is crucial. Entrepreneurs often face unexpected obstacles, market shifts, and economic fluctuations. Being adaptable and resilient allows you to stay focused on your goals, learn from failures, and pivot when necessary. Problem-Solving and Critical Thinking: Entrepreneurs are constantly presented with problems that require innovative solutions. Critical thinking skills enable you to analyze situations, identify opportunities, and make informed decisions. Problem-solving skills are essential for addressing everything from product development issues to market strategy challenges. Entrepreneurs need to think creatively and find practical solutions to complex problems. Effective Communication and Networking: Building and maintaining relationships is fundamental in entrepreneurship. Effective communication skills, both verbal and written, are essential for pitching ideas, negotiating deals, and conveying your vision to others. Networking skills help you connect with potential partners, investors, customers, and mentors. A strong network can provide valuable insights, support, and opportunities for growth. While these are the top three must-have skills for entrepreneurs, it’s important to note that entrepreneurship also requires a wide range of other skills, such as financial literacy, leadership, time management, and the ability to take calculated

risks. Additionally, qualities like passion, perseverance, and a strong work ethic play a significant role in an entrepreneur’s success. Developing a well-rounded skill set and continuously learning and improving are key to thriving in the entrepreneurial world. How do you unplug and step away from work? I have many interests the fuel my energy and allow me to thrive. These include time with my family and friends and my new fur-baby, our puppy Ashton. I am also very focused on health and wellness and fitness is a big part of my life and routine – I work out six days a week and enjoy music and podcasts while I work out. I love to have great experiences from new restaurants and art and music events and enjoy travelling.

What is the one lesson learnt that’s unique to being a woman leader? Embracing Authenticity: I’ve discovered that authenticity is a powerful asset as a woman leader. In a world that sometimes expects women to conform to traditional leadership styles, embracing my authentic self and leadership style has been a unique lesson. I’ve found that being true to myself not only enhances my effectiveness as a leader but also sets a positive example for others. You have been a recipient of prestigious awards and accolades over the years. What is the secret sauce behind your success? There are many things that I would attribute my success to:

Passion and Perseverance: The key to my success has undoubtedly been a combination of passion and perseverance. I believe that when you are genuinely passionate about what you do, it fuels your determination to overcome obstacles and continue working toward your goals, even when faced with adversity. Passion keeps you motivated and focused, and perseverance helps you push through challenges and setbacks.

Failure, rather than being a setback, has been a stepping stone to my success. I view failures as opportunities to learn, grow, and refine my approach

Continuous Learning and Adaptation: One of the key ingredients in my success recipe has been a commitment to continuous learning and adaptation. In today’s rapidly changing world, staying up-to-date with industry trends, technology, and best practices is essential. I’ve always sought opportunities to expand my knowledge and skill set, and I’ve been willing to adapt my strategies and approaches when needed. This flexibility has allowed me to thrive in dynamic environments. Effective Networking and Relationship Building: Building and nurturing meaningful relationships with colleagues, mentors, and industry peers has played a significant role in my success. Networking isn’t just about connecting with others; it’s about creating a supportive community of individuals who can offer guidance, share insights, and collaborate on opportunities. The secret includes leveraging these relationships for mutual growth and advancement, and from a place of generosity versus greed in how I look at networking and relationships.

A Strong Work Ethic and Discipline: A strong work ethic and discipline are essential ingredients in my success. Consistency and a commitment to putting in the necessary effort, day in and day out, have been pivotal. Success rarely happens overnight, and I’ve learned that consistent, focused work is the foundation upon which achievements are built. Embracing Failure as a Stepping Stone: Failure, rather than being a setback, has been a stepping stone to my success. I view failures as opportunities to learn, grow, and refine my

approach. The willingness to take risks and learn from both successes and failures has been a crucial part of my journey. Surrounding Myself with a Talented Team: One of the key secrets to my success is recognizing the importance of surrounding myself with a talented and dedicated team. No one achieves success in isolation, and a highperforming team can amplify your efforts and bring diverse skills and perspectives to the table. Each of these ingredients has played a role in shaping my path to success. It’s important


to note that the “secret sauce” can vary from person to person, but these principles have consistently contributed to my achievements and may offer valuable insights to others on their own journeys to success. Where do you see yourself in the next 5 years? In five years, I see myself continuing to evolve as a dynamic leader and influencer in both the corporate and social impact spheres. My primary career goal is to secure a CEO-level role where I can leverage my expertise in leadership, culture, and diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) to drive meaningful change within an organization. I am committed to applying the insights and experiences I’ve gained over the years to lead and inspire teams toward greater success. Additionally, I aspire to expand my impact beyond a single organization by joining other boards of for-profit companies. These board roles will allow me to contribute strategic guidance and governance while broadening my network and knowledge in different industries. Simultaneously, I plan to continue my work as a speaker and advocate for leadership, culture, DEI, and social responsibility. My passion for making the world a better place to live and work remains a driving force in my life. I intend to use my platform to raise awareness, share best practices, and inspire positive change within organizations and communities. What advice do you have for professionals who are just starting out? As someone who has navigated various stages of their career, my advice for those at the beginning is to focus on building a strong foundation while remaining open to opportunities and personal growth. First and foremost, invest in building a solid skill set and a reputation for reliability and diligence. Excellence in your work, regardless of its scope, is a stepping stone to greater responsibilities and opportunities. At the same time, keep an open mind. Early in your career, you might not have a clear path or know exactly where you want to end up, and that’s perfectly fine. Be open to different experiences and roles, as they can help you discover your true passion and strengths. Networking is another critical aspect. Cultivate relationships with mentors, peers, and industry professionals. Networking can provide valuable guidance, insights, and opportunities throughout your career. Lastly, never stop setting goals and challenging yourself. Continuously strive for personal and professional growth and be curious. It’s okay to have ambitious aspirations; they can be a powerful motivator. In conclusion, build a strong foundation, stay open to opportunities, nurture your network, and never stop challenging yourself. Your career is a journey, and by embracing these principles, you’ll be better equipped to navigate it successfully.

David, can you please tell us about your background and areas of interest? I trained as a Chartered Account with PWC, qualifying in Victoria, BC, Canada. I then transferred to PWC in Zurich, Switzerland, and after 2 years my largest client, NCR Switzerland, offered me a fantastic opportunity to join as their Financial Controller. They had over 2,000 employees and $300 million in revenue, so it was exciting, and I was just 27 years old. Four

years later I had the opportunity to move with NCR to the UK and have lived in London for the past 30 years. I left big corporates at the end of 1999 and over the next 10 years was CFO of three companies that were in different industries, and they were all active in raising capital and buying other companies. I quit my last CFO role in 2010 and have built my own boutique consulting practice which I have run since then. We work with companies that want

When you raise Funds, you have the opportunity to Acquire a top-quality business which you can build upon, rather than buying a cheap company that needs a turnaround strategy

to grow by raising funding and acquiring other businesses. On the personal side, my interests are travel, music and wine. What are the key challenges faced by small businesses right now? Small businesses (“SMEs”) face many challenges. The biggest ones are: cash flow; finding, winning and keeping customers; and attracting and retaining talented people. At the same time, SMEs have many opportunities: they

Can you tell us about your bestselling book, “Add Then Multiply – How small businesses can think like big businesses and achieve exponential growth” and your FACE methodology? My first book, Add then Multiply, is based on everything I learned over the 10 year period when I was CFO of the three companies that raised capital and bought other companies. Writing the book was a real game-changer. It forced me to clearly articulate a strategy of exactly what it is that I do. And perhaps more importantly, what I don’t do. It helped me focus my business (also called Add then Multiply) on the right kind of clients, which included dropping a few clients that no longer fit what we were doing. That freed up time to find clients that were a better fit, and the business has grown from five years ago when it me and a part-time virtual assistant, to a team of 5. The FACE methodology stands for Fund, Acquire, Consolidate, Exit. It is an advanced strategy for achieving accelerated growth, and it is something that many small business owners don’t think applies to them. That couldn’t be farther from the truth. When you raise Funds, you have the opportunity to Acquire a topquality business which you can build upon, rather than buying a cheap company that needs a turnaround strategy. The Consolidate phase is the hardest, because it’s all about putting companies together to maximise the opportunities that each brings to the table. Finally, when you decide it’s


time to move on to the next thing, you sell the combined businesses, and that is the Exit. Fund, Acquire, Consolidate, Exit. What was the inspiration behind establishing ‘Funding Focus’? What is its mission and vision? The inspiration behind Funding Focus came to me in 2019. I was speaking at an event about fundraising for SMEs, and after my talk a woman came up to me and asked why so little funding went to female founders. I didn’t know the answer. In fact, I’m ashamed to admit that at the time I didn’t even know it was an issue. I started researching the issue and was shocked by what I found: over the last 15 years the level of venture capital funding to female founders has never broken through 2% of total funding in Europe and 3% in the USA, despite the fact that female founders submitted more than 5% of pitchdecks. All male teams, by contrast, submitted around 70% of pitchdecks and received over 85% of total funding, The rest goes to mixed gender teams. It’s a similar story for non-white founders of any gender. The mission of Funding Focus is to level the uneven playing field that female and underrepresented founders of every gender face when raising capital. How was your experience like at your first TED talk on “The Fight for Fairer Funding”? Please walk us through the journey. I have always wanted to do a TEDx talk, and when I was approached by the organisers of TEDx PCL in London, I was excited. There is a huge amount of preparation required to give a

TEDx talk. I immediately reached out to a person I know who is a TEDx coach, and he really helped me to craft my talk and ensure it had the maximum impact. The day of the talk itself was unusual, because it was recorded during the pandemic. The only people allowed in the room were the TEDx organisers and the other speakers. Then, in the summer of 2022 the most amazing thing happened: my talk was picked up and shared by four YouTube influencers and it now has more than 3 million views! You have been a recipient of numerous awards and accolades over the years. What is the secret mantra behind your success? I have been fortunate to win a few awards. The one I’m most proud of is Best Business Self Development Book, which Add then Multiply won at the 2020 Business Book Awards. It may sound trite, but the key to winning awards is to enter them. If you don’t win, learn from the process and enter them again. Put forward things that you are proud of and that can make a difference to peoples’ lives. Please brief us about your second book, ‘Funded Female Founders’. What kind of research did you do, and how long did you spend researching before beginning this book? Writing my second book, Funded Female Founders, was very different to the first one. I spent about 18 months researching it, interviewing dozens of female founders, senior people in venture capital firms and business advisors. I also shared the draft at various stages with several key women in my network, asking

them for critical feedback. I had to ensure the tone was right. As a man writing a book about fundraising for women in business, I was particularly concerned that it did not come across as mansplaining. What’s a productivity tip you swear by? About five years ago, I started working with a virtual assistant, Taryn. Just 10 hours a week to start. She has been employed full time in my business for the last three years. What are your personal goals in the next 5 years? Growing up in Canada I learned to work hard and play hard. My goal is to build a lifestyle that I never retire from. I love what I do and want to do it for the rest of my life. At the same time, I take around 8 weeks of holiday every year, including a 6-week “pilgrimage” back to Canada to visit family and friends – some of the people I love most in the world. What piece of advice would you give to aspiring female entrepreneurs who are trying to raise funding? Read Funded Female Founders! It is written as a guide. The first part of the book looks at what it’s really like out there. The good, the bad and the ugly. It shares the stories of 7 female founders in 7 different industries in 4 countries who have successfully raised capital. The second part looks at the different types of funding that are available, how to pitch for it and hoe to close the deal. The final part looks into the future and discusses things that need to change economically, politically and socially to ensure everyone has fair access to the capital that is available.

My view on the future of work is that it will be characterised by a blend of technology and human interaction. In-person collaboration plays a vital role in building workplace culture. However, the future of work is really happening now, and it’s flexible, digitised, and always-on. This requires a balance between remote and on-site collaborations. Embracing digital technologies that can mimic in-

person collaborations, fostering a culture of continuous learning, and empowering adaptability are all vital in today’s rapingly changing world of work. Wendy, can you tell us a little bit about yourself and your role at Ceridian? As Managing Director and Regional Leader for EMEA, my role involves listening to our customers and teams to see how we can keep growing Ceridian in a profitable and sustainable way, while ensuring that we’re delivering quantifiable value and helping our


customers win in today’s always-on, fastchanging changing world. By listening to and understanding our customers’ unique needs, we can quickly connect them to the right teams in our business, and allow our modern technologies help them reach their full potential. Similarly, listening to our employees’ experiences from a cultural perspective means we can nurture their development, while helping them feel empowered in the work that they do. And, taking it a step further, it’s also about empowering people to not only voice their thoughts, but to act on them as well. It also ensures we are producing fair and equitable workplace practices for all our people. Do you feel that there are strong opportunities for women to grow and lead in the industry, and how is Ceridian fostering advancement opportunities for women? A lot has changed over the last few years. The industry has seen significant growth, which has opened more opportunities, specifically for women, who are seeking careers in tech, and even more so for those aiming for leadership roles. Everyone wins when diversity of thought and experience is embraced, and that’s one of the things I love most about Ceridian. We have Co-CEOs who are male and female, we have an amazing diverse split of boards and management levels across the globe, and we are constantly looking at ways to create opportunities not just based on gender, but for candidates with disabilities and from minority backgrounds as well.

What are some of the challenges that you faced in your career? Do you have some examples to share and advice to women leaders on overcoming them? My career started in finance. But after I had my first son, I took a career turn and joined Ceridian, which is where I really fell in love with the payroll industry. When I first started, I didn’t know anything about payroll or HR. But I spent a huge amount of time with the payroll operations team, and I became very passionate about it, to the point that I know how to process a gross-to-net payslip manually - which I’m very proud of. My advice to women leaders is to maintain self-confidence and to not shy away from pursuing their dreams. It's crucial to find the right balance and remember that with the right support, anything is possible In your academic or work career, were there any mentors who have helped you grow along the way? What’s the best piece of advice you have ever received? Throughout my career, I’ve been fortunate to have several mentors who helped shape my professional growth. However, the best piece of advice I have ever received is to always be proactive: Get involved, ask questions, and if you want it, go get it. Could you highlight some of your success habits that enable you to meet your goal? Some habits that drive my success involve actively listening and engaging with customers and teams, maintaining a healthy balance between work and personal life, and constantly learning and adapting to new technologies. I like

to complete my actions in real time as it helps me maintain my work life balance. I believe these habits have been key to me reaching my personal goals while helping Ceridian’s customers meet their goals and unleash their full potential. I also plan to continue to leverage my experience and skills to further drive our business towards sustainable profitability, all while enabling both our customers and employees to tap into their fullest potential.

What is your secret to striking a work-life balance? I want to be really honest as it isn’t easy, and I don’t always get it right. It starts with empowering yourself to set clear boundaries and to say no when what’s being asked of you doesn’t fall within those boundaries. Striking a work-life balance comes down to having the right support and knowing exactly what you want from both areas. I can tell you as a working mom, my job makes me a better parent, and being a mum enhances my work performance and the success of my interactions with our people, customers and partners. What advice do you offer to young people interested in a career in the industry? Don’t be shy - if you want it, go and get it! Get involved, ask questions, and surround yourself with the right people because anything is possible with the right team. Remember, a career in technology isn't limited to those with a tech degree – there are many transferable skills that can be applied in this sector.

Career Trajectory Monica earned a BS in Marketing and Management from the McIntire School of Commerce, University of Virginia, and an MBA from the Carroll School of Management, Boston College. She began her career at Andersen Consulting – now known as Accenture, where she led multi-functional teams in strategic and business transformation engagements. Monica then served as Vice President of Quality at GE Capital. Even though Monica enjoyed working for her former client, she missed the everchanging challenges of

the consulting world. This desire prompted her to join Pricewaterhouse Coopers Consulting (PwC). Shortly after joining PwC, the organization was acquired by IBM in 2002. During her 14+ year tenure with PwC/IBM, Monica served as a leader, advisor and consultant for the firm’s internal business transformation efforts and led over 300 consultants within its Operations Strategy and Supply Chain Business Service Areas. She was the Global Leader for Lean Six Sigma and the Federal Sector’s Operations Strategy Partner for Operations and Supply Chain Management. Although Monica provided exemplary service to all her clients while at PwC/IBM, her passion was partnering with the US Department of Defense, supporting DoD to improve mission critical processes. DolJenn Performance Consulting: Fostering Innovation to Drive Results & Growth In 2014, Monica embarked on her entrepreneurial path and founded DolJenn Performance Consulting LLC, a woman owned small business. She is asked quite often how she landed on the name DolJenn. She happily responds, “That was an easy decision. It represents my Mom, Dolores, and my Dad, Jennings. They’ve always supported my endeavors.” After forming a business partnership with long-term friend and colleague, Alexandrea Griswold in 2019, DolJenn Consulting became a Native American, HUB Zone, and small woman-owned business. A Project Close to Heart In 2014, Monica supported the US Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) Veterans Economic Communities Initiative (VECI) as the National Public Engagement Strategic Advisor. The VECI's goal was to increase veterans' education and employment opportunities by bringing together local and national employers to coordinate services for veterans, service members and military families. Monica developed the program’s mission and objectives and collaborated with internal

and external stakeholders, including Congress, agency partners, government and non-government organizations, nonprofits, service members and veterans. She developed strategies for connecting veterans and transitioning service members with local and regional competitive employment and education opportunities. Drawing from the experience and successes of the VECI, she created a national collaborative called VeteransNCommand. The collaborative coalesces a nationwide network of Executive Consultants committed to promoting the economic mobility of veterans and their families. For Monica, this project is amongst her favorite and close to heart as it enabled her to give back to the nation and make a difference in the lives of veterans, service members, and military families. That support and passion continue today. Lessons Learned Monica has had some amazing mentors and partners throughout her career who have inspired and motivated her. She explains that in terms of submitting winning proposals, in the consulting business you fail more often than you succeed. “Hence, you need to be resilient, to ask for feedback, to learn from mistakes, and never stop pursuing your passions,” asserts Monica. Sources of Inspiration What inspires and motivates Monica is developing talent and learning new things from employees, clients, and trusted partners. Hearing positive feedback from her clients always encourages her. Likewise, working in a consulting environment

allows her to tackle different challenges, and welcome daily learning scenarios with her team. Building solid relationships of trust and respect with colleagues, partners, and competitors is especially important to her. “I feel if you can inspire others to be transparent, keep commitments, and remain trustworthy, while also walking the talk, that’s a good way to be a leader.” As an authentic leader fueled by the desire to help others succeed, she bestows complete trust in her team and values their decisions. Pearls of Wisdom Monica recommends aspiring consultants to research management consulting organizations, large and small. If you believe it is the right path for you, take the plunge, as it can be a rewarding career as long as you have the right mindset and manage expectations. She also suggests they find an organization that will allow them to learn, focus on their career development, and will provide several types of engagement opportunities. While this negativity bias served our ancestors well in dangerous and uncertain times, it can be counterproductive in today's world, leading to increased stress, anxiety and depression. Fortunately, studies in neuroscience have shown that our brains are remarkably malleable, allowing us to rewire our thought patterns and responses to external stimuli.

With deliberate practice, individuals can shift their default thought patterns from negative to positive. Nonetheless, some may remain skeptical about the power of mindset due to various limiting beliefs. Debunking Misconceptions A resilient mindset does not dismiss challenges or hardships nor ignoring potential pitfalls or the harsh realities of the business world. Choose to be positive: Regardless of the difficulties we encounter, we always have a choice — to give up or press on, to feel stuck or energized, to feel lousy or great. Make a choice that no matter what happens, we will stay positive. We need to feel good before we can perform better. Acknowledge your emotions: When you find yourself in a negative state, put a stop and change your state by reframing your mind. Negative emotions are only helpful for 1 second as alert signals. Staying in negative emotions hurts our ability to see and respond clearly and take laser-focused actions. Reframe your mind: Turn every outcome or situation into a gift. Instead of viewing challenges as negative experiences, consider what you can learn and how you can grow from them and even as a source of inspiration to ignite your own inner light or spark inspiration in others. Embrace positive self-talk: What you tell yourself shapes your state of mind. Encourage yourself with positive affirmations, boosting your confidence and resilience.
