Guiding Individuals to Make their Emotions Work for Them, Instead of Against Them

Emotional Intelligence (EI) isn’t a new concept, it’s always been there. So why has it become so important in today’s business world?

I can think of at least three key reasons. For one, even though the concepts of emotional intelligence are simple to understand, they're very challenging to practice. So those who have high emotional intelligence usually stand out in a crowd. That's why we often say that IQ that

gets you the job, but EQ gets you the promotion. And you could say the same for reaching any business goals, also as entrepreneurs—so much of good business requires people skills, and that's what emotional intelligence is all about.

The second reason has to do with a new audience that is just learning these skills. You're right that EI is not a new concept, and time hasn't changed its value. But you constantly have young people entering the

Recently, in an exclusive interview with CXO Outlook Magazine, Justin shared his insights on the importance of Emotional Intelligence (EI) in today’s business world, the inspiration behind establishing EQ, Applied, personal role model, favorite quote, future plans, and much more. The following excerpts are taken from the interview.

My inspiration was finding and filling a gap in the emotional intelligence literature

workforce who don't know much about it, because unfortunately it's still not taught much in school. And truth be told, there are so many from every generation who don't know much about it—I get emails form them all the time.

The final reason is a positive one: Today there's just so much more appreciation for mental and emotional health than what we've seen in the past. That actually increases the value of EI in the eyes of many.

How much of EI is already determined before adulthood? Also, when it comes to the gender, does the research show any specific pattern like women tending to score higher for example?

Those are difficult questions to answer. There is certainly research to support that much of personality and social skills are determined at an early age. But there's a growing body of research that shows just how plastic the brain is, and how much we can learn and adapt, even well into adulthood.

Regarding gender, again, there's research to support men and women handling situations differently in aggregate (for example, how they handle feedback). However, it's important to remember that different facets of emotional intelligence sit on a spectrum. Meaning, everyone has strengths and weaknesses, and a strength in one area can be a weakness in another. That complexity, among other factors, makes emotional intelligence difficult to measure.

What was the inspiration behind establishing EQ, Applied? How do you help business leaders and professionals use emotions to work for them, instead of against them?

My inspiration was finding and filling a gap in the emotional intelligence literature. My goal in the beginning was simply to make emotional intelligence easier to understand through my writing, with real-life examples that people can relate to.

Since then, I've found that there's a lot of value in providing people with frameworks they can use to apply what they learn. So, EQ Applied has really grown into an educational company, with a focus on online courses. Again, the concepts are

not hard to understand, but they are challenging to practice. So those frameworks make it a bit easier. Not easy, mind you, but definitely easier.

Justin, are there any meaningful events in your backstory that helped shape your career path? Yeah, definitely. I mean, my Mom and Dad are quite different in how they handle emotions. They're also culturally very different, with my Mom being Portuguese-American and my father being a first-generation American immigrant from the Philippines. So, from an early age I learned very different skills and cultural values from both of them.

Then, I followed a very different career path: I worked 13 years as a volunteer at a very mission-driven nonprofit: The world headquarters of Jehovah's Witnesses. My first job there was quality checking Bibles as they came off the production line...and later I worked managing teams in various departments.

I learned much of the practical side of emotional intelligence in the workplace— management and motivational skills—in those years. That gave me a very different perspective and skill set that benefited me when I started my own business, coaching and consulting for corporations and small businesses.

Please brief us about your book, EQ Applied: The Real-World Guide to EmotionalIntelligence. Do you have any special message for our readers who are predominantly business leaders, CXOs, and entrepreneurs working in diverse industries?

EQ Applied is a great starter for those who have heard of emotional intelligence but aren't

sure how to develop it in their own lives. I'm a storyteller by nature, so I use stories from the news and from my own life to bring the research to life. I also try to make any advice as practical and actionable as possible, so people can put it to work right away.

Apart from EI, what other top skills should aspiring professionals develop to succeed in the current business world?

First and foremost, critical thinking. After that, industry-specific knowledge.

What is your favorite quote?

"Love never fails."- Bible, 1 Corinthians 13:8

Who is your role model in life and why?

Jesus Christ. He set the standard in how I want to lead my life. And as a Christian, he's my exemplar.

Where do you see yourself in the next 5 years?

Right now, I'm still very much hands-on with running and growing EQ Applied. In five years, I'd like to get it to a place where I'm simply guiding the company's strategy from a high-level, with others handling the day-to-day operations.

That would enable me to spend more time with my wife and four children, who mean the world to me...and also more time with my volunteer work.

What advice do you have for entrepreneurs who are just starting out?

Re your readers, I'd say it doesn't really matter what industry you work in, emotional intelligence will benefit you in every line of work. And it benefits you at home, too, that's what's so great about it. You practice at work, and that can make you better for your family. Then you practice at home, and that can make you better at work. The key is to start practicing...because it takes time to change and improve habits.

Strike the word failure from your vocabulary. You will stumble, sometimes you'll fall...but each mistake is a learning experience and can make you better, if you let it.

Also, remember that everything takes longer than you think it will. It's fine to research and plan, but so often things will go differently than you think, so it's best to just get started and adjust as you go. Just keep trying, learning, and improving.

Ultimately, brand messaging needs to have more empathy and to really acknowledge that we’re in a cost-of-living crisis. Brands that take this to heart will reap the rewards and see the most benefit from their marketing budget.

It’s crucial for both brands and agencies to consider how the budget will be most effectively spent, although this is generally best practice, not just in a cost-of-living crisis. Choosing your channels is one of the best places to start.

At Summit, we recommend a full-funnel approach, even when marketing budgets are tight. This might sound counterintuitive, however, with the increasing length of exploration and consideration phases, it is important to be present at every stage of the customer journey. Does this mean that heavily investing in Display, YouTube, and Discovery is the right approach for every retailer?

The answer is yes…and no! This is where Google’s automated advertising technology Pmax can add the most value because of its capability to be path-to-purchase aware. This means that it can show the right ad at the right time, helping move users down the

funnel towards converting while also working towards a ROAS/CPA target.

In addition, there has also been a more recent trend of pulling PPC and SEO more closely together as brands seek to work more effectively and efficiently to maximise shrinking budgets.

Of course, this closer collaboration between channels is a lot easier if the channels are managed within one agency or in-house team, such as the work Summit does for a number of clients. By bringing all areas of digital marketing under one management team, there is greater oversight, better cohesion, and more efficient campaign management across the board.

When it comes to budget spend, the client's goal is king, and any marketing strategies and tactics have to work towards this end. For example, if a client is focused on generating more revenue (as most are!), you need to go to the start and work out how to get there.

Essentially, no money is wasteful, but the most agile strategy is to make all of the channels work together. Having an omnichannel view as opposed to individual strands of activity will be the most efficient way to spend budgets. in making the transition experience one of the most rewarding ones of her life. At the age of 21, she started her career as a tax advisor with Arthur Andersen in Brazil. For Cristina, it was an absolute honor to have worked there for 7 years.

At Cisco, Cristina enhanced her knowledge and skills from some of the best leaders. After that, she found DuPont's professional development culture to be extraordinary. Under DuPont’s fast-track development program, Cristina was given a new challenge every two years, allowing her to elevate her leadership potential, inspire confidence, and drive impactful change. Even to this day, she applies the lessons learned from those experiences to manage a large team and work and have a lot of fun while doing it.

Finally, in 2013, Cristina left her job at DuPont and started her first company – a tax consulting firm in Sao Paulo, Brazil. Even though it was hard leaving, DuPont became Cristina’s first client, and, to this day, she cherishes their friendship.

On a personal front, meeting her husband, Rafael and later becoming a mum to two boys, Victor and Tomas, are Cristina’s greatest source of joy in life. Cristina and her family moved back to Miami permanently in 2015.

The Inception Story

While Cristina was running her boutique international tax consulting firm for 2.5 years in Miami, she started thinking of ways to escalate the business while keeping a high standard of service. Her experience at other companies have showed her that no matter how large the companies were, the number of errors and the lack of a standardized process was shocking. On top of that, it was also clear to her how under-serviced international clients were in the US. This brought home the message that automation was the only way to continue growing the number of client services while keeping an acceptable work-life balance. Commitment to Lifelong Learning

As a lifelong learner, Cristina started her Master of Accounting with an emphasis in US tax at the same time she joined Berkowitz Pollack Brant - BPB, a CPA Firm in Florida, in 2016. She sat for her 4 CPA exams in 4 consecutive months and passed them all, also in 2016, shortly after she joined BPB. Even though it was extremely hard to juggle all while having two young kids at home, the master’s degree allowed her to fast-track her learning of US International tax and fulfill her goal.

For someone who believes that there is no limit to what one can learn and improve, Cristina is excited to start a course at Northwestern - Kellog: AI Applications for Growth this September and also plans to apply to the Stanford Executive Program to continue evolving as a leader in 2024.

Global Expansion Plans

In October 2023, ASTRIDE is launching its second service: Tax and Accounting services for individuals investing in Real Estate in the US. Before the end of this year, Cristina and her team are also launching ASTRIDE in Europe, with the first service being offered for Brazilians interested in moving to Portugal using the Non-Habitual Residency tax regime. Likewise, they look forward to expanding their services to Mexicans and Colombians investing in the US.

A bit further down the road, Cristina sees ASTRIDE as more than a digital tax and accounting platform. “We will be a marketplace, a one-stop shop where our clients can get all they need, including opening bank accounts, obtaining mortgages, getting financial advisors’ referrals, real estate sales associates referrals, among many others,” concludes Cristina.

Of course, there are many models we can tap into to give a well-articulated answer to this question. To me, management is about being a rainbow human. Generously serve people without expecting anything in return (helping, developing, coaching, with dedication). 2°) YELLOW. follow your dreams and your heart, and let it show to contaminate others (vision, inspiration). 3°) GREEN. connect with authenticity. If you could turn the time, what would you love to do in regard to your business?

I fell too quickly into the “technician” trap. I fell in love with my product & service, wanting to dig even deeper into the data, into the tools and the technicalities of behaviour change etc. It is super interesting and intellectually highly rewarding to be doing this. Yet, to be a good entrepreneur, you need to see yourself as a balanced incarnation of both a “technician” and a “manager”. We tend to focus on the “technician” part, i.e. the content of what we offer. And we fail to spend enough time on describing and standardizing our practice to make it scalable and be able to sell it at a later point. That second part is the real secret of entrepreneurship and what makes it a successful sustainable business. I wish I had accepted less contracts (it was so tempting) and started less projects (do I have too many ideas and too much enthusiasm?) in order to intentionally invest more time into describing and standardizing my practices.

What keeps you going even in hard times?

During covid, I had lots of time to think about how to reinvent myself. This is where I discovered that a great day for me was a day where I could combine 3 things: connections, achievements, and learning. As long as I have those 3 elements, I am fine. When my business was not yet taking off, I managed to get the very same ingredients through music:

connected with new musicians who became my friends, delivered my first rock concert as a drummer, learning tons on myself and my limitations in the process.

I make sure to have several of these projects ongoing in parallel to my main activity, so that in tough times, I can rely on them to get what I need to keep going.

Then of course, my mission in life of reenchanting / re-humanizing organizations is so much bigger than mine that it helps me put life events and hiccups in perspective.

Where do you see Humanize and Teamersive in the next 5 years?

I think the culture transformation consultancy will gradually become a side product of Humanize. In 5 years, Humanize will have developed into an integrated business offering universal everyday digital tools that will impact humanity in organizations. By then, our unique approach to developing humanity in organizations using data will have been copied and replicated by several other players around the globe. If we achieve that, our success will be full.

As for Teamersive, I think we will revolutionize learning and training for teams and the industry of team dynamics. In 5 years, technology will have evolved so much that we will be able to offer the service directly at the customer’s place (today you still need to go to a specific place to have this experience). Another few years, and people will not even believe that we one day we used to conduct team dynamics diagnostics and workshops based on static questionnaires and boring surveys rather than with real time behavioral data.
