MANAGING DIRECTOR, AMERICAS CULTURAL INSIGHTS & CONSUMER STRATEGY LEADER, EY
DRIVING HUMAN-CENTERED BUSINESS INNOVATION
Marcie Merriman is a global leader in cultural anthropology, brand strategy, and generational research, known for driving business growth by tapping into changing human needs. At EY, Marcie works with CEOs and Board Directors across industries to anticipate disruption and propel growth through humanled strategies. She speaks globally on societal change, generational shifts, and changing consumer and workforce behaviors. Marcie’s insights have gained international attention with features on CNBC and BBC and in publications like The New York Times and The Wall Street Journal.
Recently, in an exclusive interview with Digital First Magazine, Marcie shared her professional trajectory, insights on diversity and inclusion in tech, significant career milestones, future plans, words of wisdom, and much more. The following excerpts are taken from the interview.
Hi Marcie. Please tell us about your background and areas of expertise. My background is in cultural anthropology and brand strategy. I’ve worked in many different environments – from big management consulting like EY, to big corporate like Toys R Us and Victoria’s Secret, to creative start-ups, including my own I sold to EY in 2013. The common thread I have woven through all of these has been in applying my training and education in anthropology to see the patterns of change within societies early in their cycle and matching these against business opportunities and capabilities to solve human needs. This often this results in
SOLVING THE LITTLE PROBLEMS THAT ARE OFTEN OVERLOOKED BY THE MASSES CAN MAKE A BIG DIFFERENCE IN SOMEONE’S WORLD
emerging whitespace businesses can fill through new products, services or experiences. The magic is in aligning a business’s core competencies against where consumer sentiment is going. In the best of situations, it helps businesses solve underlying human needs with solutions consumers come to find they can’t live without.
What drives your passion for using business as a force for good, and how do you stay inspired to tackle complex societal challenges?
I believe there are too many people suffering from unnecessary problems. Major health and
security challenges are a part of this, but even the basic daily experiences or simple challenges of life people go through have a ripple effect.
Solving the little problems that are often overlooked by the masses can make a big difference in someone’s world. I especially think about the challenges that are affecting parents or moms, which I am especially sensitive to being one myself.
I think of the mom struggling to work her way through a complicated health care system to fill out the forms required to start school, or discovering the Halloween costume will not arrive when promised, or discovering items
IN ORDER TO SUCCEED, BUSINESSES WILL INCREASINGLY BE CALLED ON TO COMPENSATE FOR WHAT SOCIETIES AT LARGE ARE NOT DELIVERING
missing from a takeout food order. These hassles deplete energy and create a trough in the customer experience. Additionally, companies not keeping up with customer expectations are counting on their front-line employees, frequently also moms and often at minimum wage, to make up the difference. That shouldn’t be the case. These are basic challenges that should not exist, because businesses can do better.
What do you believe are the most pressing societal issues or human needs that businesses can address in the next 5-10 years, and how can entrepreneurs and leaders make a meaningful impact?
One of my top concerns is the impact of today’s environment, events and activities on children. We are seeing inequities between children who simply don’t have the same opportunities, the same technologies or the environments to thrive. Children coming from more privileged families are also struggling with mental health issues and concerns about safety and security. I also think about the implications for parents, the business environment and ultimately society at large. As any parent will tell you, you can only be as happy as your least happy child. These parents are not just consumers, buyers or demographics, these are your employees. These are the people that you count on and want to be fully committed and productive. If they are having challenges in their day-to-day life how are they supposed to give their best effort to the work? All of this creates ripple effects that cause challenges across organizations and society.
Business leaders and entrepreneurs are about solving problems. There is so much more we can
do to start to address the societal and business implications of childcare, child education, mental health, security, and safety. In order to succeed, businesses will increasingly be called on to compensate for what societies at large are not delivering.
What has been your most careerdefining moment that you are proud of?
There are two, and they are very different. At Toys R Us, I was early in my career just out of college and managing stores and teams of up to 200 people. I was a 24-year-old managing people from 18 all the way up to 75 from many different backgrounds. I had to learn how to earn their respect, how to motivate them, and how to provide them what they needed to do in their daily work. The ability to succeed in that environment, and especially see people thrive, change, and become more empowered themselves, was one of the greatest feelings in my career.
If it’s just one moment, I would say it’s the moment I decided to go out on my own and start my own company. The stomach-churning in that and looking back on it, I sometimes can’t believe I did it. It’s about being able to trust yourself, believe in yourself and take the leap.
What are your thoughts on diversity and inclusion? How important is it to have authentic conversations with leaders, professionals, and changemakers to create more acceptance across the globe? Authenticity is a critical enabler of inclusion. Employees who feel pressure to mirror those around them will fail to share their perspectives that differ from others. Creating a culture
of authenticity – which is also the basis for trust - starts with the leaders demonstrating and embracing it. This is perhaps one of the biggest challenges since many of today’s businesses leaders have spent a lifetime trying to fit in, losing site of who they are at their authentic core.
If you could have a one-hour meeting with someone famous who is alive, who would it be and why?
Barron Trump. I would be fascinated to understand, from a Gen Z and insider perspective, how he feels about current events.
CREATING A CULTURE OF AUTHENTICITY –WHICH IS ALSO THE BASIS FOR TRUST - STARTS WITH THE LEADERS DEMONSTRATING AND EMBRACING IT
Is there a particular person you are grateful for who helped get you to where you are?
My daughter. She is my north star, setting an example for me to live up to and inspiring me to be better and do better every day.
How do you keep your mind healthy and stay resilient? And how do you motivate your team?
Sports, exercise, reading historical fiction, vacations, family, friends and continuously reminding myself that I do this because I love it. I encourage the same for my team – to find the aspects of our work that gives them the most energy – and work together to maximize the attention they can put toward those activities or initiatives.
Where do you see yourself in the next 5 years?
Continuing to help businesses understand and solve the needs of people.
What advice would you give to aspiring social entrepreneurs or business leaders who want to make a positive difference in the world, but may not know where to start or how to scale their impact?
Start with clearly defining the problem that needs to be solved. What are the unmet human needs at the root of the problem? These can include challenges and needs expressed as consumers, employees, citizens and many other forms of identity. Many entrepreneurs and business leaders are searching for the earth-moving, huge initiatives, when the fact is there are so many seemingly small fixes that can result in big changes for the lives of the people most impacted.

What, personally, has allowed you the success you have had in the role of a design leader in technology?
Reflecting on the elements that have carved my path as a design leader in technology, it becomes clear that certain personal attributes and philosophies have been fundamental in shaping my journey and achievements.
Curiosity and Lifelong Learning:
At the core of my ethos is an insatiable curiosity—an eagerness to continually explore, understand, and question. This trait was profoundly influenced by my experiences working with the legendary Dr. Philip Kotler, who, even in his nineties, exhibited the zeal of a perpetually curious child. From him, I learned that age does not define our capacity to learn; rather, our willingness to remain open and receptive does. This philosophy of lifelong learning has enabled
me to stay ahead in the rapidly evolving field of design and technology, constantly integrating new knowledge and insights into my work.
Embracing Change: Recognizing that change is the only constant, I have embraced it with open arms. This acceptance has not just been about adapting to change but leveraging it as a catalyst for growth and innovation. In the world of technology, where new developments are always around the corner, being adaptable and flexible has allowed me to lead projects and teams through transitions smoothly and with vision.
Fueling Desire: I believe deeply that design educates and cultivates our desires—it taps into our core emotional and aesthetic sensibilities. By moving from merely addressing needs to inspiring desires, I’ve been able to create designs that resonate more profoundly with users. This approach transforms functional objects and interfaces into experiences that people love and yearn for, enhancing their engagement and satisfaction.
Driven by Legacy and Purpose: Lastly, the desire to leave the world better than I found it acts as a powerful motivator. This legacy-driven approach ensures that the work I do is not just for immediate impact but for creating lasting change. Whether it’s through sustainable practices, empowering others through design education, or creating products that improve quality of life, the focus on legacy offers a guiding light and a deeper meaning to every endeavor. Together, these elements—curiosity, adaptability, the power of desire, and a commitment to legacy—form the cornerstone of my philosophy as a design leader. They inspire
not only my professional actions but also my personal growth, driving me to create designs that are not only innovative and beautiful but also deeply meaningful and impactful.
Where or whom do you seek motivation and inspiration from? How?
Where do I find my wellspring of motivation and inspiration? Truly, it bubbles up from the stories and lives of those around me. Echoing Mr. Rogers’ wise words, “Frankly, there is no one you can’t learn to love once you’ve heard their story,” I find a universe of inspiration in the narratives of everyday people. Each individual carries a story that can spark creativity, drive, and transformation.
Take for example my immigrant parents, who sculpted a future from the hard clay of adversity. Their resilience and dedication are not just lessons in survival but in thriving against the odds with grace and tenacity. Or consider my children, who weave their present with threads of sometimes quaint, old-fashioned values, proving that even the most traditional threads can be part of a vibrant tapestry.
Then there are those in my daily encounters— individuals whose lives are quiet anthems of sacrifice, dreams, and care. These aren’t just stories; they are lighthouses guiding me through the foggy complexities of life and work.
In the realms of technology and design, I’m equally invigorated by the luminaries—Steve Jobs with his intuitive grasp of what people would need before they knew it themselves; Jeff Bezos, who turned the kernel of an online bookstore into a behemoth that redefined retail; Jack Ma, who digitized China’s appetite for entrepreneurship; Elon Musk, a modern-day Prometheus, stealing fire for us in renewable
energy and space travel; Don Norman and Don Peppers, who reshaped our understanding of user experience and customer relationships; Philip Kotler and Seth Godin, the sages of marketing whose insights have lit up numerous paths. And oh, how could I forget (with a wink and a nudge)—the legendary desire to “think different” (sorry, Apple, couldn’t resist borrowing that!). It’s this eclectic mix of global giants, family tales, and everyday heroes that stirs the pot of my creativity. Their stories are not just a source of inspiration but a powerful reminder that we all have the potential to build, create, and dream—regardless of the stage we’re on.
If you could have a one-hour meeting with someone famous who is alive, who would it be and why?
If granted the rare opportunity to sit down for an hour with someone famous, my choices would span both the living and the historical, each providing a unique perspective that resonates with my aspirations and curiosities.
Sophia Coppola: Among the living, Sophia Coppola stands out as a fascinating figure whose artistic vision and sensitivity capture the nuances of human emotion and the complexity of life’s quieter moments. Her film “Lost in Translation” is a testament to her ability to convey profound human experiences through subtle storytelling and meticulous attention to detail. Her distinctive feminine perspective enriches the narrative landscape, making her films not just stories but explorations of inner life. A conversation with her would be immensely enriching, offering insights into how she sees and translates the world into cinematic experiences that speak to the depths of human feelings. In a time when the world urgently needs compassion and understanding, her perspectives on storytelling, creativity, and the human condition would be invaluable.
Ernest Hemingway: For the historical figure, Ernest Hemingway, a titan of American literature, would be my choice. Hemingway’s ability to weave complex human emotions into

succinct, impactful prose changed the fabric of writing. His personal struggles, mirrored in his characters, defined a generation grappling with the aftermath of war and the existential crises of modern life. Understanding Hemingway’s tortured soul—haunted by his thoughts, desires, and relentless pursuit of meaning—would provide profound insights into the resilience and vulnerability of the human spirit. Discussing his motivations and the societal pressures that shaped his narratives would offer a deeper appreciation of how personal turmoil and the broader cultural milieu influence creative expression.
Engaging with these two extraordinary minds, one from the realm of film and the other from literature, would not only be a dream come true but also a deeply enlightening experience, bridging different artistic expressions and epochs. Each conversation would undoubtedly enhance my understanding of the arts and humanity, inspiring my own journey in design and storytelling.
Where do you see yourself in the next 5 years?
In the next five years, I envision a journey that continues to be as dynamic and inspired as the path I’ve traveled so far. True to my core, I’ll be chasing new dreams—those that perhaps haven’t even taken shape yet but are waiting just beyond the horizon of my current aspirations. The nature of dreams is that they evolve, and as they do, so do I, constantly adapting and pursuing new ambitions that stir my passion and drive.
The essence of my days will be found in the serendipity of life’s simple, unplanned moments—from a casual chat with a stranger to
the deep discussions that spring from unexpected encounters. These are the interactions that often spark the brightest ideas, fueling my creativity and desire to innovate.
Building new things is in my DNA, whether they’re tangible products, companies, or merely ideas. This process inevitably comes with its share of failures—those hard yet invaluable lessons that pave the road to success. I embrace each failure as a necessary step toward greater achievements, knowing that each setback is just a setup for a comeback.
And, of course, the constant, the unwavering goal in all my endeavors, will be to make a positive impact on people’s lives. Whether it’s through design, technology, or simply by being there for someone, improving the human experience is the ultimate benchmark of success for me. This isn’t just a professional objective but a personal commitment to leave the world a little better than I found it.
So, in five years, you’ll find me where you’d expect: somewhere between dreaming boldly and acting purposefully, forever in pursuit of that next great adventure.

developing systems that are uniquely tailored to each client’s specifications.”
Diram’s expertise spans industries like steel, mining, automotive, and renewable generation plants—sectors where high reactive power consumption can lead to inefficiency, increased costs, and penalties from utilities. By optimizing power quality and compensating reactive power, Diram helps these industries not only meet compliance standards but also cut costs and boost the reliability of their power systems.
Optimizing Power Quality for High-Energy Industries
In energy-intensive industries, reactive power compensation and power quality optimization aren’t just technical necessities—they’re business imperatives. Poor power quality can wreak havoc, leading to equipment failures, reduced efficiency, and costly production stoppages. For companies facing these challenges, Diram offers a lifeline. Their solutions help stabilize and enhance power systems, resulting in smoother operations and fewer disruptions.
Diram’s expertise spans industries like steel, mining, automotive, and renewable generation plants—sectors where high reactive power consumption can lead to inefficiency, increased costs, and penalties from utilities
“Reactive power is a hidden drain on efficiency,” says Medina. “By compensating for it, we help our clients boost productivity and cut downtime.” With energy costs climbing and industries under pressure to improve sustainability, Diram’s expertise ensures that businesses not only meet operational goals but also reduce unnecessary energy expenses.
As the global energy landscape shifts toward renewables, Diram has positioned itself as a key player in ensuring grid code compliance for renewable generation plants. One of their proudest achievements was their involvement with Mexico’s Energy Regulatory Commission, helping optimize the Grid Code in its version 2.0. “We were the only independent company in the Reliability Advisory Committee,” Medina notes. Renewable energy sources like wind and solar are notorious for power variability, but with Diram’s advanced solutions, these plants can maintain stability and meet stringent regulatory standards, helping ensure the overall health of the grid.
Customized Solutions for Complex Power Systems
Diram’s customer-centric approach has always been at the heart of their success. By collaborating closely with clients, they tailor solutions to meet each customer’s unique needs.
Medina shares a recent success story involving a steel manufacturing plant that faced frequent power disruptions. “We conducted a detailed analysis of their power system and designed
a solution using STATCOMs. This improved their stability and boosted productivity by 6%.” For Diram, these kinds of tailored interventions are what make the difference between a solution that merely works and one that transforms operations.
The company’s after-sales service is another area where it shines. Diram provides extended warranties and real-time monitoring systems to ensure ongoing efficiency and regulatory compliance. “Our team is trained to not just fix issues but prevent them,” Medina explains. By closely monitoring trends in electrical performance and equipment health, Diram ensures that failures are avoided, and costly downtime is minimized. This customer-first philosophy is why so many first-time clients become long-term partners.
Delivering high-performance solutions at a reasonable cost is a balancing act that Diram takes seriously. By employing advanced simulation systems and optimization algorithms, they design systems that meet both technical and budgetary constraints. “It’s not enough to just offer the best solution—we ensure it’s the best value, too,” Medina adds.
Expanding Expertise Across Borders
As Diram expands its reach, adapting to different markets and regulatory environments is a priority. Their strategy has focused on the U.S. and Latin America, where regulatory standards differ, and the energy landscape is diverse. Medina emphasizes how crucial it is to be fluent in these local grid codes. “Our engineers are experts in the markets we serve,” he says, ensuring that each solution is fully compliant and optimized for performance.

MOST INNOVATIVE LEADER IN INDUSTRIAL DESIGN TO WATCH IN 2024
Will Mitchell
Managing Director of 4c Design
Transforming Innovative Ideas into Meaningful Solutions
From a young age, William Mitchell was drawn to the world of design and engineering. His fascination began when he visited his father’s workplace at just 10 years old. There, he watched as his dad showcased engineering drawings, prototypes, and complete systems that he called ‘Machine Art.’ “I love the sound and feel of something that just works. You just know it’s right,” says Mitchell. This exposure sparked a lifelong passion to create innovative solutions that deliver that same sense of perfection.
In 2004, Mitchell joined 4c Design, a company founded by two graduates of the
Glasgow School of Art just two years earlier. Having spent four years in a small engineering business building machines for various industries, Mitchell was well-prepared to take on new challenges. Today, as Managing Director of 4c Design, he continues to find excitement in tackling complex problems and leading a team of talented designers and engineers. “I love that feeling of solving a problem. I think the vast majority of us do,” he explains.
For Mitchell, problem-solving goes beyond technical know-how. Early in his career, he realized the power of asking questions—even the simplest ones—to facilitate communication. “I realized very early on that it was okay to
Will Mitchell, Managing Director of 4c Design
be the stupidest person in the room and ask lots of questions,” he says. This approach has proven to be invaluable as a consultant, where asking the right questions often reveals gaps in understanding or misalignment between stakeholders.
4c Design has distilled its innovation mindset into four key pillars: Leadership, Approach to Risk, People, and Environment
One of his first projects demonstrated this perfectly. The CEO of a company had asked Mitchell to build a specific machine, but after speaking with the shop floor staff, it became clear that their needs were very different. By bringing everyone together, Mitchell was able to bridge the gap and redefine the project’s goals. “Eventually, by facilitating a meeting with all the stakeholders, we were able to create the right brief. Everyone wins,” he recalls.
4c Design’s early vision was inspired by Lockheed Martin’s Skunkworks model, where they served as a ‘bolt-on’ service to handle agile, hands-on design work, while their clients focused on their more process-

driven tasks. Today, however, the company’s role has evolved. They see themselves as partners, not just service providers. “Our heroes in those early days were IDEO and FROG. Both are as active today as they were back in the late ‘90s and early 2000s,” Mitchell notes.
Building an Innovation Culture
For 4c Design, innovation is defined as “change that adds value.” But this value isn’t just about profit margins—it’s about making a positive impact across all stakeholders. Whether it’s creating a new revenue stream, cutting costs, delivering a better user experience, or designing a more desirable product, the very best innovations capture a mix of these elements. Mitchell believes that innovation works best when it’s a collective effort. “We aim to be an extension of our client’s team, bringing our own culture into their workplace,” he says.
This evolution has led 4c to redefine their role as ‘Outsourced Innovators,’ focusing on creating true value rather than just executing briefs. “We don’t just look at how to make something for our clients; we want to understand the value being generated,” says Mitchell. With this approach, they aim to reduce the failure rate of new product developments by uncovering the deeper ‘whys’ behind a project, ultimately improving their clients’ odds of success.
Before diving into blueprints and sketches, 4c Design makes sure the business is ready to innovate, appreciates the risks involved, and is clear on the direction
He points out that fostering an environment for innovation can’t be achieved overnight. To tackle this, 4c Design invites clients to collaborate in their office and workshop spaces. The goal? To set an example and lead with their approach. The company has distilled its innovation mindset into four key pillars: Leadership, Approach to Risk, People, and Environment. Over the years, they’ve fine-tuned these pillars through handson experience, helping companies lay the foundation for a robust culture of innovation.
For 4c, the creative process revolves around what Mitchell calls “building to think.” Unlike traditional design consultancies that spend endless hours theorizing, 4c takes a different route. They have invested heavily in an engineering workshop where they can quickly build models and prototypes. “If a picture is worth a thousand words, then a model, or a simple prototype is worth a thousand more,” Mitchell explains. Instead of drawing up complex diagrams, they dive straight into creating physical versions of concepts to test their viability.
When designers talk about “fail fast, fail cheap,” they’re referring to this approach. The sooner a team can hold a prototype or physically interact with a model, the faster they can gauge its direction. “Better to dismiss an idea when it’s made of cardboard and staples than find out it’s wrong after spending thousands on tooling,” Mitchell notes. It’s this pragmatic approach that allows 4c to confidently address client challenges while staying agile and adaptable.
Ultimately, the aim is to become a longterm partner for innovative projects. But even if a client is looking for a one-off solution,
4c’s starting point is always the same: they dig deep to learn about the business first.
Innovation That Matters
For 4c Design, it’s not just about coming up with creative ideas. Understanding why a business wants to innovate and what value is being added is critical to the potential success of any project. “If it doesn’t solve a problem, if no one wants it, if no one can make it, or it’s just too expensive, the whole exercise has been a waste of time and effort,” Mitchell says, summing it up in his no-nonsense style.
That’s why their design process relies on understanding constraints—durability, cost, manufacturing, and environmental impact. But Mitchell is clear that these shouldn’t be roadblocks at the outset. Instead, they should be introduced gradually. “We drip-feed constraints into the process. If we haven’t done that initial research and established those constraints, we’ll have nothing to measure our ideas against when they emerge,” he adds. It’s about finding the sweet spot between creativity and realism, ensuring that every idea has a solid foundation.
This structured approach helps reduce the risk of projects veering off course. “Decades of consultancy have taught me one thing: don’t just pick an idea and run with it. Do the homework,” Mitchell advises. Before diving into blueprints and sketches, 4c Design makes sure the business is ready to innovate, appreciates the risks involved, and is clear on the direction.
Navigating Barriers to Innovation
Many businesses face barriers when it comes to innovation—uncertainty about investment,
unclear ownership of responsibilities, and fear of failure. These can paralyze a company from taking the first step. That’s where 4c Design comes in. Their role is to break down these barriers by building a robust, step-bystep strategy that gradually builds confidence.
To navigate this complex terrain, 4c employs a methodology rooted in NASA’s Technology Readiness Levels (TRLs).
Originally developed in the 1970s for the space shuttle program, TRLs offer a systematic approach to innovation, breaking projects down into manageable chunks from concept to production. TRLs are rated on a
scale from 1 to 9, with 9 representing the most mature technology. However, 4c has introduced TRL 0, defining the necessity of the innovation project. “It’s the start point and frankly the most critical part of the process. All actions lead back to the decisions made here,” Mitchell emphasizes. TRL 9, on the other hand, marks the point of full-scale production. In between, there’s a series of checkpoints to measure progress and readiness to move forward.
This incremental strategy ensures that adjustments can be made at earlier stages, reducing risks and maximizing the chances of success. “Making significant changes at TRL 6 is far less risky than blindly launching a product to an unprepared market,” Mitchell says. This thoughtful pacing prevents projects from stumbling into costly pitfalls, giving clients the confidence to innovate without fear.
Bridging the Imagination Gap
One of the toughest hurdles 4c often faces is the “imagination gap.” It’s easy for creative thinkers to visualize an idea, but not everyone has the same ability, especially when it comes to stakeholders or clients who are making the final call. This is where 4c’s expertise in drawing, computer-aided design (CAD), and prototyping comes in. By creating tangible representations of concepts, they can help bridge that gap, making it easier for everyone involved to see the potential.
“As the investment in a project grows, the quality and functionality of the prototyping have to improve,” Mitchell notes. In some cases, these prototypes need to closely resemble the final product in both look and feel, ensuring that the entire team is aligned and confident in the vision. This hands-on approach not only brings ideas to life but also keeps everyone engaged and on the same page.
At the core of 4c Design’s philosophy is a simple yet powerful mission: to improve the odds of projects leading to a successful outcome
At the core of 4c Design’s philosophy is a simple yet powerful mission: to improve the odds of projects leading to a successful outcome. But for Mitchell and his team, it’s about more than just business success. “We want to make a meaningful difference to the world,” he says. It might seem like a bold statement for a small business, but 4c’s journey has already shown that impact begins with one small step. And seeing the positive changes they’ve made keeps them inspired to push boundaries and continue innovating.
Innovation with Integrity
4c Design is committed to creating solutions that genuinely make a difference. The team has improved the quality of life for individuals with disabilities, enhanced animal welfare through collaborations in the agriculture and veterinary sectors, and helped companies navigate complex safety challenges in some of the most demanding environments, from the depths of the sea to the heights of the sky.
This is no small feat for a compact team of creative and practical problem-solvers who are driven by a passion for improving lives. “From the very beginning, we’ve had a moral standard not to ‘add to the problem,’” says Mitchell. This guiding principle is what defines the company’s approach to every project and every client interaction.
He recalls a time when they were approached to design a novelty phone holder. Now, novelty phone holders aren’t exactly in short supply—there are numerous companies that thrive by making quirky, decorative holders. “But it’s just not something we feel the world needs more of,” William explains. “It would go against what we believe in, so
we advised the client accordingly.” This anecdote illustrates how 4c Design applies a thoughtful filter to every inquiry, ensuring that their work not only adds value but also aligns with a deeper sense of purpose.
Their selective approach isn’t about turning down opportunities; it’s about maintaining the integrity of their brand and staying true to a vision that goes beyond profit. It’s about avoiding what William refers to as “wasting time, resources, and investment in a product no one wants.” He believes that this mindset could prevent the negative environmental impact of countless failed projects—products that end up as unwanted waste simply because no one paused to ask why they needed to exist in the first place.
This focus on meaningful innovation has defined 4c Design’s trajectory over the past 20 years. They’ve seen firsthand how their projects have positively impacted clients and customers alike, and they remain inspired by the potential to continue making a real-world difference. But for William and his team, it’s not just about their own impact—it’s about inspiring others in the industry to adopt the same principles.
“If we can encourage others to innovate responsibly, starting with asking why this needs to happen in the first place, we’ll see the odds of success improve dramatically,” he says. It’s a bold vision, but one that reflects 4c Design’s unwavering commitment to integrity and purpose in every endeavor. Through this approach, they’re not just innovating for the sake of innovation—they’re shaping a future where every product, every solution, and every design truly matters.

Helping Entrepreneurs Boost Business Support with AI
Tiebe Parmentier, CTO & Co-Founder, Tekst
Hi Tiebe. Please give us an overview of your background and career to date. Hi, I’m Tiebe Parmentier, I’ve had a keen interest in computer programming from a very young age. I took computer science as an engineering degree at university, and that’s where I got heavily involved in AI. This was before the GenAI boom happened. With some friends I trained an AI model to bring structure to our personal - and overflowing - inboxes. At one point, we crashed the university’s servers,
but it was all good fun and the experience inspired me to start Tekst.com, together with my friend Wouter Janssen, whom I’ve known since primary school. Tekst.com is an AI platform that lets enterprises that work with large, shared inboxes efficiently prioritize, route and answer customer and employer’s requests. I love the combination of data science and Generative AI, and I’m really excited to see our customers get value from AI. There’s simply so much more to AI than chatting with ChatGPT.

Tiebe Parmentier is one of the Co-founders of and CTO atTekst, an AI automation platform that customizes models to customers. With a background in Computer science and natural language processing, Tiebe is always looking at how to make things work, for real.
Recently, in an exclusive interview with Digital First Magazine, Tiebe shared his professional trajectory, what sets Tekst apart from other market competitors, personal source of inspiration, the secret sauce behind his success, future plans, pearls of wisdom, and much more. The following excerpts are taken from the interview.
What originally attracted you to entrepreneurship?
My first encounter with ‘AI for work’ was at my summer job: I spent 2 summers working at Robovision, an AI company that helps farmers by for example using computer vision to sort tulip bulbs. It really opened my eyes to the value that AI can bring to existing industries. I did quite a bit of research to see where enterprises have an
‘unmet need’, and many of the business leaders I talked to mentioned B2B communication, and email in particular, as being a pain in the …. Every company has various databases like ERPs or CRMs in place, but getting the raw text-based input from customers and employees into those systems is always a challenge. It takes a lot of manual work, there are many chances for error, and the type of work tends to be repetitive and
Motivation comes quite naturally to me. I’m excited about the technology we’re building, that feeling really keeps me going
stressful. When I saw the potential of generative AI, I knew many issues could be automated, but as an engineer I also knew that it wouldn’t be an ‘out of the box’ automation. AI models need to be specifically designed to work with the existing business processes, and once trained, the models require retraining. That’s where the value of Tekst.com lies: it helps enterprises automate in a structured and safe way, incorporating feedback without extra effort.
Has your entrepreneurial journey been influenced by any present or past business leaders, and how?
While Satya Nadella or Elon Musk have a spark of brilliance / madness that definitely is inspiring, I have to say that in my case, my mother influenced my entrepreneurial journey immensely. It being Mother’s Day in Belgium, let’s have a big shoutout to all mothers who help their children step outside of their comfort zones from an early age!
What is the origin story behind your startup Tekst? What sets it apart from other market competitors?
Ah, that’s always a fun question. Tekst.com is unique in creating a ‘data layer from text’ specific to a company. This makes what we do structurally different from more generic solutions, and it allows our customers to tackle very complicated back-office automation tasks. Customization of the models for each company allows us to go much further than others.
What are some of the industries that AI will most impact over the next decade? AI will impact every industry, but the most important improvements will not always be the
most visible. Data governance, machine learning, the more back-end automations… that’s where I see AI benefit all so-called traditional industries. All cases where AI can run in the background without it looking like AI.
What should entrepreneurs know about AI?
That it’s not magic. Neither a magic bullet nor a magical demon creature. AI is a means to an end, and it really is the time to get fully
involved. Making stuff work is about 200 things done right instead of 1 trick.
Apart from AI, what technology are you most excited about right now?
If it wasn’t for AI, I would be deep into cybersecurity. I find it fascinating how small things can have such profound effects on a company’s attack vector and I would certainly try to make things more secure.
What, personally, has allowed you the success you have had in the role of a leader in technology?
Working with young people as a leader in summer camps has definitely helped me :), but on a more serious level I’ve benefited from having access to advice from experienced managers and CEOs. Then again, it’s a lot about learning as you’re doing it, so every day teaches me new things.
Where or whom do you seek motivation and inspiration from? How?
Motivation comes quite naturally to me. I’m excited about the technology we’re building, that feeling really keeps me going.
Where do you see yourself in the next 5 years?
Honestly, 5 years seem so far away. By next year, I’ll have a better grasp on that question.
What piece of advice would you give to aspiring AI entrepreneurs?
Write down a few bullet points about where you want to make the difference and stick to it. There are so many options, so many opportunities, but it really pays off to stay laser focused on the path you have chosen. Stay strong and keep going.
