SATNAM SINGH SATNAM SINGH
SATNAM SINGH
Please tell us about your career path. What experiences have brought you here?
Throughout my (nearly) 25-year career, I have built a reputation as a leader who drives significant growth, efficiently, by leveraging digital strategy, product development, and
technology, with a strong focus on Data and AI. My journey began at Akamai Technologies, where I designed advanced AI algorithms for one of the world’s first and foremost digital infrastructure companies. While I thrived in this technical domain, my passion for creating customer-centric digital solutions steered me
CURRENTLY, AS THE CHIEF DIGITAL AND TECHNOLOGY OFFICER OF ADVISORY BUSINESS, AND AS A MEMBER OF THE DIGITAL & TECHNOLOGY EXECUTIVE LEADERSHIP TEAM AT CBRE, A FORTUNE 126 COMPANY AND THE WORLD’S LARGEST COMMERCIAL REAL ESTATE FIRM WITH $32 BILLION IN ANNUAL REVENUE, I LEAD DIGITAL TRANSFORMATION INITIATIVES THAT DRIVE SUBSTANTIAL VALUE CREATION FOR OUR ADVISORY BUSINESS
toward product management, where I could directly influence value creation at scale.
As I transitioned into product and technology leadership roles, I had the opportunity to transform major organizations like Travelocity and MetLife. In these roles, as I spearheaded initiatives that significantly boosted growth and operational efficiencies, resulting in both revenue growth and enhanced profitability. One of the key milestones in my career was turnaround of Travelocity, under the private equity ownership of TPG and Silver Lake, to profitable growth, within 18 months, and an eventual sale to Expedia. Another key milestone
was when I launched Oracle’s first AI suite, an industry-leading product suite that I successfully scaled to several hundreds of millions USD in annual recurring revenue. These experiences reinforced my belief in the transformative power of digital, technology, and data/AI to drive business outcomes.
Currently, as the Chief Digital and Technology Officer of Advisory business, and as a member of the Digital & Technology executive leadership team at CBRE, a Fortune 126 company and the world’s largest commercial real estate firm with $32 billion in annual revenue, I lead digital transformation
initiatives that drive substantial value creation for our Advisory business. My career has been defined by a commitment to commercial growth, focus on execution, and the ability to align cutting-edge technology with strategic business objectives, positioning organizations to outperform their peers in increasingly competitive markets.
What do you love the most about your current role at CBRE?
What I find rewarding in my role are the opportunities to leverage data, AI, and technology to build digital applications that deliver commercial value for both CBRE and our clients. It is incredibly satisfying to develop and deploy large-scale data platforms that handle and utilize more than a billion data points. These platforms enable use of AI, including Generative AI, effectively, positively
transforming the workflows of a diverse range of customers, from brokers and appraisers to property managers and loan service teams.
I also value the opportunity to drive operational excellence and enhance productivity for our various teams across the globe through a combination of global solutions contextualized for local needs. By focusing on integrating advanced digital and technological solutions, I work to streamline processes and improve efficiency, which directly contributes to our commercial success and benefits our clients.
Finally, I am motivated by the role I play in building a sustainable and innovative future. Knowing that my efforts in advancing technology and strategy can help create lasting value for both our organization and future generations gives me a deep sense of purpose and achievement.
CBRE USES DATA, AI, AND ADVANCED ANALYTICS ACROSS THE REAL ESTATE LIFE CYCLE AND IN OUR OWN BUSINESS TO UNLOCK OPERATIONAL EFFICIENCIES, MANAGE RISK, DIFFERENTIATE OUR SERVICES AND HELP OUR EMPLOYEES BE MORE PRODUCTIVE
How is CBRE leveraging digital technologies like AI and data analytics to enhance its services and stay ahead of the competition?
CBRE uses data, AI, and advanced analytics across the real estate life cycle and in our own business to unlock operational efficiencies, manage risk, differentiate our services and help our employees be more productive. Two examples are predictive insights and document abstraction.
As the world’s largest real estate services and investment firm, we possess vast quantities of proprietary transaction and building management data. For example, AI enables our Capital Markets professionals to determine best sources of capital for property sales. It also helps our account teams streamline operations across geographically diverse building portfolios, ensuring consistent delivery of services.
Commercial real estate is a documentintensive industry – there are numerous contracts (such as leases), other legal documents, and research reports. Generative AI helps drive higher productivity for our employees through faster extraction of information and improved accuracy. As one example, by automating lease abstraction, CBRE has reduced manual lease processing time by 25%.
In the next 5 years, what emerging technologies or trends do you see having the most significant impact on the commercial real estate sector?
Commercial real estate continues to evolve at pace with several emerging trends shaping its future. Adoption of smart buildings and digital twins, increasing attention to sustainability
and green practices, growing role of AI and data, and the influence of e-commerce and AI on fast growth of warehousing and data centers are some of the key factors driving a shift in the sector. These developments are gradually enhancing the industry’s efficiency, sustainability, and adaptability.
PropTech is facilitating this shift, with smart buildings and digital twins becoming more prevalent. These technologies are improving the management and maintenance of properties by utilizing IoT devices and real-time data. The ability to create virtual replicas of physical assets not only allows property managers to monitor and optimize building operations, contributing to better tenant experiences and resource efficiency, but enables brokers to drive better insights into the spaces during the leasing process.
Sustainability continues to gain traction within the commercial real estate sector, with a focus on energy efficiency and renewable energy integration. AI-driven systems are helping to optimize energy use and reduce waste, aligning with broader efforts to enhance building performance and environmental impact. Additionally, AI (especially Computer Vision) is being increasingly utilized in asset and property management, enabling more efficient operations, predictive maintenance, and better financial forecasting, which helps maximize the value and performance of real estate portfolios.
AI and large-scale data management are playing a crucial role in shaping the future of commercial real estate. Predictive models enable more informed decision-making by forecasting market trends and tenant needs and loan origination and servicing. The rise of e-commerce is also impacting demand for warehouse and
logistics spaces, with automation improving efficiency in these areas. Additionally, AR and VR technologies are transforming property marketing, offering virtual tours and immersive experiences that help visualize spaces before they are built. These trends are gradually influencing the landscape of commercial real estate.
How does CBRE balance the use of technology with the need for human expertise and client relationships in the commercial real estate industry?
Everything we do at CBRE is guided by our RISE values – Respect, Integrity, Service and Excellence. While we highlight where AI can help our people work more efficiently, we also educate employees that AI makes mistakes and it’s essential to have a human in the loop on all decision-making. AI is good at processing large amounts of data, recognizing patterns and completing tasks that require precision and speed. Yet commercial real estate is truly a relationship business built on trust.
We take great care to manage risks appropriately, and all AI technologies are analyzed for security, privacy, and regulatory compliance before introducing them in the enterprise.
What does the term “authentic leadership” mean to you? How do you foster innovation and experimentation within your team?
To me, authentic leadership is fundamentally about leading with integrity, clear communication, and a genuine commitment to the growth of my team. It involves embracing a servant leadership approach and maintaining a learning mindset.
Authentic leaders understand that they may not always have all the answers, but they use emotional intelligence to remain transparent and approachable. They bring together the right team, ask insightful questions, and establish the necessary frameworks to support collaborative problem-solving. By combining emotional intelligence with a commitment to continuous learning, authentic leaders foster a supportive environment where trust, innovation, and effective solutions can thrive.
Fostering innovation and experimentation within my team starts with creating a culture that encourages curiosity and embraces a learning mindset. I prioritize building an environment where team members feel safe to explore new ideas balancing risk taking with appropriate due diligence. This involves setting clear expectations for experimentation and providing the resources and support necessary to pursue innovative projects. I also ensure that
we celebrate successes and learn from setbacks, reinforcing the idea that every experiment, regardless of the outcome, contributes to our collective growth and progress. By empowering my team and leading by example, I strive to cultivate a dynamic atmosphere where creativity thrives, and new solutions can emerge.
You’ve had an illustrious career, marked by numerous awards and recognition, including being named one of the Top 100 Global AI Executives. Our readers would love to know the secret sauce behind your success.
The key to my success is a straightforward yet non-trivial formula: deliver improved commercial returns through increased revenue and margins. Achieving this requires a delicate balance between addressing immediate needs and implementing long-term strategic shifts
WE TAKE GREAT CARE TO MANAGE RISKS APPROPRIATELY, AND ALL AI TECHNOLOGIES ARE ANALYZED FOR SECURITY, PRIVACY, AND REGULATORY COMPLIANCE BEFORE INTRODUCING THEM IN THE ENTERPRISE
THE KEY TO MY SUCCESS IS A STRAIGHTFORWARD YET NON-TRIVIAL FORMULA: DELIVER IMPROVED COMMERCIAL RETURNS THROUGH INCREASED
within the product portfolio and organizational culture. It also involves managing competing demands, such as customer expectations, sales team requirements, strategic objectives, and competitive pressures.
My approach is centered on three core principles. First, I focus on understanding how to help our customers grow, which involves a deep comprehension of their industry, business dynamics, and the specific challenges they face. Second, I prioritize hiring and nurturing exceptional teams, as this is essential for scaling operations and executing at a high level. Third, I emphasize the importance of iteration and rapid development, which enables us to stay ahead of competitors and continuously improve. These strategies collectively ensure that we not only meet but exceed our commercial and operational goals.
What would your advice be to other leaders who are about to embark on similar journeys of business transformation?
I would direct these leaders to my earlier response for a comprehensive perspective. Additionally, I believe that achieving success is far more rewarding when it is done collaboratively. Embrace the opportunity to support your peers and other teams, and do not hesitate to seek assistance when needed. Effective communication is crucial—keep all stakeholders informed and engaged throughout the journey. By fostering a spirit of teamwork and maintaining open lines of communication, we not only enhance our collective success but also ensure a more enjoyable and impactful experience for everyone involved.
MY VIEW
Driving Innovation & Making an Impact with AI
Nicole Janssen, Co-Founder & Co-CEO, AltaML
Nicole, can you share with us the ‘backstory’ of how you decided to pursue a career path in tech?
I consider myself a lifelong entrepreneur, both my parents spent part of their career as entrepreneurs and my brief stint as an employee demonstrated to me that I am simply a terrible employee. While my journey didn’t start in tech, having the right mindset to take risks is critical in finding success. Making the move into tech 12 years ago was not
an active decision, but it was the right one. My tech journey began in our digital media company, Janalta Interactive Inc., but in 2017 we could see that AI would soon disrupt that industry. It was from exploring our own opportunities with AI that we recognized the potential for AltaML to drive tangible impact in the AI space. While it’s taken time for us to get to where we are today, through starting small with a group of 10 to now over 100 team members, we’ve really established
Leading with education, like AI literacy, sets us apart from the competitors because we really put in the time to co-develop solutions that will solve a business problem and encourage adoption
Nicole Janssen is a highly accomplished entrepreneur and leader in the field of artificial intelligence. As Co-Founder and Co-CEO of AltaML, a leading developer of AI-powered solutions, she has driven the company’s success in diverse sectors such as agriculture, health, and energy. Nicole is dedicated to responsible AI and has been recognized by the RAI Institute as a thought leader in its implementation. She has received numerous accolades, including being named one of North America’s Top 25 Women of Influence, and Woman in AI of the Year. Nicole is the Director at Edmonton Unlimited, the Canadian Council of Innovators, and serves as a member of the Future of AI Council.
Recently, in an exclusive interview with Digital First Magazine, Nicole shared her professional trajectory, what sets AltaML apart from other market competitors, insights on the three things aspirants need to create a highly successful career in the tech industry, her role model, significant career milestones, pearls of wisdom, and much more. The following excerpts are taken from the interview.
A clear understanding of AI and its impact on our everyday lives will empower individuals and organizations to embrace its potential for positive transformation, dispelling unfounded fears and fostering a more informed and inclusive approach to AI integration
ourselves as leaders in the market, who lead with ethical practices. In my mind, we’re exactly where we need to be.
Brief us about the mission and vision of AltaML. What sets it apart from other market competitors?
From day one, our mission has been to elevate human potential with applied AI and that vision really hasn’t changed. Our goal is to be committed to creating tools that leverage a proven methodology for applied AI, enabling the transformation of data into actionable insights. This is achieved through strategic partnerships, investment, and access to talented, versatile teams.
Leading with education, like AI literacy, sets us apart from the competitors because we really put in the time to co-develop solutions that will solve a business problem and encourage adoption. Navigating change management can often present significant obstacles for organizations looking to embrace AI. One of our greatest differentiators is that we offer comprehensive support, not only throughout the deployment phase but also beyond, ensuring that teams, including those external to our own organization, receive assistance at every stage of the process.
How can a company identify realistic use cases that really benefit them? Is AI useful for every company at all? What typical mistakes do companies make when implementing AI?
AI has potential for every company, but there’s a lot to consider. Starting an AI project without a clear business problem can be a major roadblock and one of the most common mistakes we see. Too often we see organizations trying to do
something “cool” with AI or they go after the latest AI tools, but they aren’t actually solving an existing business problem with these projects. The use case needs to tie into the strategic plan and help to solve an existing business problem or it won’t get the attention it needs to bring it to full operation. My best advice for anyone thinking about AI is to start small. Get some wins under your belt and build support within your organization. We all dream big, but sometimes it’s the smaller, practical use cases that really get us moving in the right direction, especially at the beginning. We often highlight that 70% of our use cases, once they’ve advanced beyond the feasibility stage, are progressing toward full operationalization. One of the key factors contributing to this high success rate is because we’re committed to guiding you every step of the way, continuously iterating and refining to achieve the best possible outcome.
As with any career path, the tech industry comes with its own set of challenges. Could you elaborate on some of the significant challenges you faced in your tech career and how you managed to overcome them?
Public perception of AI is one of the biggest challenges we face as a company and as an industry. The fear around AI perpetuated by media, misinformation, and some strong voices hinders the advancements of the technology. The main driver for us to overcome that stigma has been to lead with responsible AI. To enforce success has come with a clear strategy of encouraging education for those that we work with. This starts from the bottom all the way to the top. A clear understanding of AI and its impact on our everyday lives will empower individuals and
organizations to embrace its potential for positive transformation, dispelling unfounded fears and fostering a more informed and inclusive approach to AI integration.
Can you please share the “Three Things You Need To Create A Highly Successful Career In The Tech Industry”?
1. Agility. Tech is always changing, and you need to be prepared to adapt your approach, skills, and offerings constantly.
We’re already witnessing AI in action, from resource management to climate monitoring, and the potential for further innovation is limitless
2. Don’t count yourself out. Having a tech career does not require you to start as a data scientist or a software developer. There are many paths to being a leader in the tech industry and just because your background doesn’t scream tech, doesn’t mean you won’t be great at it.
3. Do not operate in a silo. The more you know about the business problems faced by other businesses/departments, and so on, the better you can be at helping to create an effective solution to the problem.
As you know, there are not that many women in the AI industry. Can you advise what is needed to engage more women in the AI industry?
It all starts early on. Choosing to become a data scientist later in life is tough, yet doable. But if we encourage girls to explore STEM fields, those who naturally lean toward it might pursue it more confidently, breaking down the idea that some careers are only for men or women. The more opportunities young girls have to see women in AI, the more likely they are to see themselves there. I see that change happening, which is hopeful, but we’ve got to start young to really make a difference. We can’t overhaul everything overnight, but we can reshape the story. Supporting women to thrive is a responsibility we all share. The path to the top for women is often tougher, but we can definitely make it and excel. Having a voice at decision-making tables is crucial. We need to influence big choices and shape what lies ahead for the next generation.
What are some of the industries that AI will most impact over the next decade?
Simply put, all traditional industries will see and feel the impacts of AI. While AI’s impact will be
To grow your career in AI/ML, it’s crucial to remain humble throughout your successes and embrace failure as part of the journey
widespread across all sectors, among these, some will be more impactful than others in their roll out of AI. Health care and energy stand out as particularly primed for impactful transformation. We’re already witnessing AI in action, from resource management to climate monitoring, and the potential for further innovation is limitless.
Who is your modern-day hero and why?
My grandma. She passed away several years ago but there were some traits she had that I don’t see in a lot of people. She was always truly interested in the person she was talking to and spent her time asking about them, not talking about herself. She made sure her home was a place where everyone felt welcome. She learned new things until she died, getting her first computer at the age of 90 and proceeding to write her biography on it. She was always honest, even when it stung a little.
What do you feel has been your ‘careerdefining’ moment?
When I first became the Co-CEO of AltaML, I looked to the market to see what a tech CEO should act like. I compiled a list of qualities I had read about these successful CEOs and tried to emulate them. Unfortunately, there weren’t any tech CEOs that operated in a way that felt
natural to me in my leadership style. I stumbled for a while trying desperately to conform to what I thought was expected of me. My biggest career-defining moment was when I came to the realization that I needed to lean into my strengths as a leader to be successful and continue to perfect those skills over time.
Where do you see yourself in the next 5 years?
I had the opportunity several years ago to meet Richard Branson, and he told me that one of the secrets to his success was saying yes to opportunities and figuring out how to make them happen later. So, five years from now, I will still be saying yes, but where that will lead me is impossible to predict.
What advice do you have for those looking to grow their careers in AI/ML?
To grow your career in AI/ML, it’s crucial to remain humble throughout your successes and embrace failure as part of the journey. Being agile in this industry is essential for career growth and avoiding stagnation. Stay curious and remember that as long as you’re actively seeking opportunities, you’re bound to achieve some level of success along the way.

It’s gratifying to lead a team at the forefront of technological innovation, driving change that echoes beyond our company into the entire industry.
How do you help team members improve in some areas? How do you encourage them to be the best of themselves?
One of the most fulfilling aspects of my role is helping each team member realise their full potential. I start by understanding each individual’s unique values and motivations, as well as their current skills and desired
By creating an environment that values continuous learning and open communication, I encourage team members to experiment, take on new challenges, and learn from failures without fear
career trajectory over the next two to three years. This deep understanding allows me to tailor a development plan that resonates with their personal and professional goals.
Here’s how I put this into action:
- Personalised Development Plans: Each team member receives a customised development plan that aligns with their career aspirations and the company’s goals. We review these plans quarterly to adapt to new learning opportunities or shifts in company objectives.
- Regular Check-ins: Frequent discussions ensure that these plans remain relevant and provide an opportunity for feedback and recalibration. This also helps maintain a strong connection between team members’ work and the broader company mission.
- Encouragement and Support: By creating an environment that values continuous learning and open communication, I encourage team members to experiment, take on new challenges, and learn from failures without fear.
What are some of the key trends and challenges anticipated in the data analytics landscape in 2024?
In 2024, I anticipate several pivotal trends and challenges in the data analytics landscape:
- MLOps and ML Productisation: As AI and machine learning become integral to business operations, the focus is shifting towards MLOps to streamline and scale AI deployment. The challenge is to develop robust ML systems that can easily transition from development to production, enhancing reliability and performance.
- Cost-Effective Cloud Solutions: There’s a growing need to balance the scalability of cloud computing with cost management.
Many companies are moving towards a hybrid cloud approach. This model combines the flexibility of the cloud with the control and security of on-premise solutions, presenting challenges in integration and management but offering significant cost savings and operational flexibility.
- Prototyping with LLMs: Large Language Models (LLMs) like OpenAI’s GPT and others are becoming essential tools for innovation. The challenge here is not just technical but also ethical and regulatory, as we must ensure these powerful tools are used responsibly. In 2024, we will see more organisations prototyping with LLMs, mainly using opensource models to drive innovation while managing AI ethics and compliance risks. Staying ahead of these trends is crucial for driving the company’s strategy and ensuring we harness AI’s full potential responsibly and effectively.
Are there other skills that you think are crucial to the leadership role in this very researchy data science world?
In the fast-evolving field of data science, while technical acumen is vital, soft skills are equally crucial for effective leadership. These include:
- Communication and Summarisation: Distilling complex technical details into clear, actionable insights is critical. This helps align the team with business objectives and demonstrates our work’s value to non-technical stakeholders.
- Customised Leadership: Understanding each team member’s individual aspirations and strengths is key. I focus on customising development plans and communication styles according to each member’s needs
It’s not just about the technologies we develop; it’s also about the people and the processes we improve and the knowledge that our work significantly impacts industries and lives
and career goals, which enhances motivation and productivity.
- Networking: Building and maintaining robust professional networks helps one stay abreast of industry trends, recruit top talent, and foster partnerships that can lead to new opportunities. Networking also serves as a vital channel for sharing knowledge and promoting a culture of continuous learning within the team.
- Business Acumen: A leader in the data science realm must not only be proficient in technical skills but also deeply understand business metrics and dynamics. This dual focus ensures that projects are not just innovative but also directly contribute to the organisation’s strategic goals.
What has been the most fulfilling part of your career?
Every phase has been uniquely fulfilling throughout my career, but the most rewarding aspect has been identifying and capitalising on growth opportunities in emerging technologies and industries. Early in my career, I dedicated myself to understanding where significant growth would occur and strategically positioning my skills and efforts to make the most impact.
This foresight led me to focus on AI and data science before these fields became mainstream, particularly in sectors like healthcare and mining, where the potential for technology-driven transformation was immense. Building AI units from scratch and steering these through various stages of maturity has been particularly satisfying. Seeing tangible outcomes, such as the implementation of AI in mining operations, which significantly improved efficiency and safety, or in public health, where our models predicted healthcare demands, has been immensely gratifying.
Moreover, the opportunity to lead and nurture talent and watch team members grow and excel has added a profound sense of accomplishment to my professional journey. It’s not just about the technologies we develop; it’s also about the people and the processes we improve and the knowledge that our work significantly impacts industries and lives.
What are your valuable learnings and un-learnings during your journey to a visionary leader?
I see several valuable learnings now: - Forward Planning: Being clear about where I want to be in the next 2-5 years has been crucial. I’ve learned the importance of regularly revising my goals—every quarter
or half-year—to stay aligned with the everevolving tech landscape. This helps not just in personal growth but in strategically guiding my team towards future readiness.
- Adaptability: A key learning has been the importance of flexibility. The tech industry’s rapid evolution requires adapting swiftly, whether by pivoting project directions in response to new information or entering completely different sectors to harness emerging opportunities. This adaptability has been essential for both personal development and organisational agility.
- Broad Knowledge Base: Expanding my expertise across as many areas as possible has also been critical. It’s not just about depth in one’s field but about understanding adjacent technologies, market dynamics, and even global economic factors that influence the sectors we operate in. This broader perspective fosters better decision-making and innovation.
- Unlearning Traditional Boundaries: Early in my career, I had to unlearn the notion that leaders must strictly adhere to established paths or methods. In the dynamic field of AI, effective leadership often involves challenging the status quo and embracing unconventional approaches to problem-solving and team management.
You have been a recipient of several prestigious awards and accolades over the years including being named as one of the Data Science Leaders to Follow in 2023 among others. Our readers would love to know the secret mantra behind your success.
I have a few principles that have guided me:
- Follow Your Passion: Success is a byproduct of one’s commitment to areas they are passionate

Leading Efforts Towards Shaping a More Inclusive & Equitable Tech Industry
Drew Fivey, Data & BI Talent Consultant, Mirai Talent & Co-Founder, she does data
Hi Drew. Tell us about your career path. What experiences have brought you here? My career in the tech industry took a slightly unconventional route. After graduating from university, my journey was paused by pregnancy, during which I started my own e-commerce store. This venture was a profound learning experience in digital business operations. It was through this experience that I discovered my keen interest in the intersection of technology and business, which led me into the recruitment sector. I now work as a Data & Tech Specialist
at Mirai, a boutique agency focused on actively promoting diversity, equity, and inclusion within the data and tech sectors.
Throughout my career, my passion for diversity, equity, and inclusion (DE&I) has been a constant driving force. I’ve always believed in the importance of building inclusive workplaces where diverse perspectives are valued and leveraged for innovation. At Mirai, I channel this passion into action, ensuring that our recruitment practices not only meet but champion these values. Establishing ‘she

I feel incredibly fortunate to work in a role where I can make a meaningful difference in DE&I, helping to shape a more inclusive and equitable tech industry.
What are your thoughts on diversity and inclusion in tech? How important is it to have authentic conversations with leaders, professionals, and changemakers to create more acceptance across the globe?
Operating in the data space and being a data driven company, it’s important to highlight the gender disparity, as well as other areas of lack of diversity through statistics. We are always shocked to hear statistics like 65% of
the STEM workforce are white men! (APPG Diversity and Inclusion)
At Mirai, this is why we are taking positive steps, to firstly highlight the problem and secondly take positive steps towards change. Diversity and inclusion can be a tick-box exercise but foundational principles that guide our recruitment strategies and the ethos of our company.
One of my favorite quotes and something that I live to achieve is “Diversity is being invited to the party; inclusion is being asked to dance” - Verna Myers
Authentic conversations with industry leaders and change-makers through our platforms facilitate a broader understanding and acceptance across the globe, pushing for a more inclusive tech ecosystem. These discussions are vital—they help debunk myths, highlight success stories, and encourage more inclusive practices across the global tech landscape.
Women aren’t the only underrepresented group in tech – what can be done to make tech more diverse across race, class, and gender?
It’s essential to first address barriers that affect underrepresented groups across race, class, and gender. We must take this back to the roots of education, inspiring the younger generation from various socio-economic backgrounds, and showcasing spotlights on ‘role models’ of every race, so that the younger generation can picture themselves in tech roles.
One impactful way to broaden access to tech careers is through the promotion of free apprenticeships. These programs offer handson learning experiences and professional development opportunities without the financial
burden of traditional education paths. Free apprenticeships are particularly valuable as they provide practical, real-world experience, making them an excellent entry point for individuals from diverse backgrounds who may not have the opportunity to attend college or pursue formal tech training. At Mirai and ‘she does data’. we are actively looking to partner with schools from low-income areas, so that we can inspire and encourage young individuals. Education can cultivate social and cultural knowledge and skills which can impact an individuals social mobility. It allows them to create relationships, build networks, and social connections that can open the door to various different job opportunities.
One way we can begin to enhance racial diversity by supporting and sponsoring tech boot camps and workshops specifically tailored for minority groups. These programs not only provide the necessary skills but also help build confidence and establish essential networks within the tech community.
Moreover, companies should commit to inclusive hiring practices that consciously aim to reduce bias—whether conscious or unconscious. One thing that we have been successfully implementing at Mirai is blind recruitment processes, where candidates’ names and other demographic information are omitted from their applications, to focus purely on skills and qualifications – we have have really positive on this method feedback so far.
By implementing inclusive hiring practices and supporting career advancement for diverse talent through mentoring and training, our aim is to create an ecosystem where everyone has the opportunity to succeed.”
What are the top skills, both technical and soft skills, that are greatly needed in the current technology industry?
We are seeing a huge increase in sought-after technical skills including proficiency in data engineering, data science AI, machine learning, cloud computing. However, the soft skills that truly make a candidate stand out include creativity, curiosity and problem solving.
As well as this, we are seeing a need for critical thinking, adaptability, leadership, and the ability to collaborate effectively across diverse teams. These skills are crucial for driving innovation and adapting to the rapidly changing tech landscape.
How do you think we can attract more young women to the STEM field?
To encourage more young women to pursue careers in STEM, we need to start by breaking down stereotypes and increasing visibility of female role models in these fields. It’s about reframing the industry to highlight its inclusivity, creativity, and impact. This begins with changing the narrative around what it means to work in tech. Instead of solely focusing on the technical challenges, we should also emphasize the creative problem-solving, collaborative work environments, and the ability to make a meaningful impact on society—whether through developing innovative healthcare solutions, advancing sustainable technologies, or creating accessible educational tools.
Through Mirai and ‘she does data.’ we are looking to host more events, mentorship programs, and hands-on workshops that expose young women to the possibilities in STEM. We are building a unique platform where females can champion each other, sharing success stories and journeys that

The meaning of leadership can change from one era to another, how would you define the meaning of leadership today?
Successful leadership today is about inspiring and facilitating change – it’s important now more than ever to take a coaching approach when it comes to leadership. A modern leader must be adaptable, transparent, empathetic, and compassionate, and must prioritise sustainability and ethical practices. At Mirai, we strive to embody these qualities by creating a culture where everyone is encouraged to share ideas and where diverse perspectives are celebrated as essential to our success.
By focusing on developing individuals’ strengths, coaching leaders enhance team performance and adaptability. This leadership style builds trust, improves communication, and

What is it that motivates and inspires you in your everyday life?
At Mirai, many of our practices are rooted within Japanese culture, indulging Ikigai and
Kaizen, our purpose is for everyone in the team to have an aligned ikigai and ‘reason for being’. My ikigai comes from the success stories from individuals within our community at Mirai and ‘she does data.’ and making a difference to the industry. Whether it’s seeing a candidate thrive in their dream job or breaking barriers in their tech career, these stories fuel my passion.
They reaffirm the impact of our work and inspire me to continue advocating for change in the tech industry.
Fun fact about you?
A fun fact about me which many don’t know, is that I have ADHD, which I proudly call my superpower! It enhances my creativity and gives me a unique ability to hyper-focus. It allows me to think outside the box and approach problems from innovative angles that others might not consider. ADHD also gifts me with boundless energy and the ability to juggle multiple tasks at once, making me highly adaptive and versatile. It’s like operating with a brain that’s wired for high-speed broadband! This helps a lot in recruitment as I am able to rapidly shift focus to find and match the perfect candidates with incredible opportunities and find solutions for clients that others might otherwise overlook.
Where do you see yourself in the next 5 years?
Looking ahead, I plan to leverage our shared passions at Mirai to scale ‘she does data.’ into a global platform, expanding our presence to the U.S. My goal is to not only increase the number of women in tech but to also ensure they have influential roles in shaping the future of technology. I also envision myself advocating for policy changes that support diversity and inclusion at higher institutional levels.
What advice would you give to women who want to enter the tech industry?
For women aspiring to enter the tech industry, my foremost advice is to cultivate a strong foundation in both technical and soft skills.
Embrace learning; the tech field is everevolving, so continuous education and skill development are crucial. Seek out coding bootcamps, online courses, and certifications that can enhance your proficiency and competitiveness in areas like software development, data analysis, or cybersecurity.

Modern leaders are facilitators who create environments where diverse ideas can thrive and where teams feel supported to innovate and tackle challenges
in 2023, where I now oversee a holistic datadriven transformation. Here, I not only drive technological advancements forward but also ensure that our strategy, organizational model, and change management support this development.
What do you love the most about your current role?
I thoroughly enjoy the diversity and breadth of my role, which allows me to intersect with various areas of our company. For instance, a typical
day might start with deep technical discussions with architects about building our global data platform. Later, I might be collaborating with our Legal and Compliance teams to ensure our new tools and processes comply with the AI Act. Then, I shift to facilitating workshops with different departments to demystify data and AI, sparking ideas for new use cases. This blend of deep technology, strategic planning, and engaging with people energizes me and makes my work incredibly rewarding.
As a seasoned tech leader in data-driven transformations, what would be your top three tips for creating a successful datadriven culture?
First, Leadership Commitment—it’s essential for leaders to actively champion and engage with data initiatives, demonstrating their importance. Second, Show, Don’t Tell—since data can be an abstract concept, we need to make it tangible through practical demonstrations and real-world applications that clearly show its impact. Lastly,
Cross-Functional Collaboration—by encouraging teamwork across different departments, we break down silos and foster a holistic approach to data, leveraging diverse perspectives to innovate and solve problems more effectively.
What are your thoughts on diversity and inclusion in tech? How important is it to have authentic conversations with leaders, professionals, and changemakers to create more acceptance across the globe?
Diversity and inclusion in tech are crucial not only for driving innovation but also for accurately representing the global community we serve. A diverse workforce brings unique perspectives that foster creative solutions and a deeper understanding of our user base. Consider how traditionally, cars have been designed using the ‘reference man’ model, yet women are nearly 50% more likely to be seriously injured in car accidents. Similarly, in AI development, diversity is vital for reducing biases and preventing the continuation of historical discrimination in our technologies. For instance, diverse teams crafting credit scoring algorithms can ensure these systems do not disproportionately disadvantage specific demographics, thereby enhancing financial inclusion.
In your academic or work career, were there any mentors who have helped you grow along the way? What’s the best piece of advice you have ever received?
Throughout my career, I’ve been fortunate to have mentors who encouraged proactive growth. The best advice I ever received from
them was, ‘Start before you’re ready.’ This has taught me the importance of taking initiative and embracing opportunities, even when I felt unprepared, which has been crucial in my quick professional development.
The meaning of leadership can change from one era to another, how would you define the meaning of leadership today?
Today, leadership is defined less by authority and more by influence. It’s about empowering others, fostering collaboration, and driving change by example. Modern leaders are facilitators who create environments where diverse ideas can thrive and where teams feel supported to innovate and tackle challenges. They prioritize transparency, accountability, and a commitment to continuous improvement, aiming not just to direct but to inspire and mentor those around them.
What is it that motivates and inspires you in your everyday life?
It might sound a bit cliché, but what really motivates me is the beauty of our world. Seeing its wonders, whether through travel or meeting new people, reminds me just how amazing it can be. That’s why I’m passionate about using data and AI not just responsibly, but in ways that genuinely make our world a better place.
Fun fact about you?
My fascination with Asia extends beyond its cuisine; I’m also deeply intrigued by its culture. I’ve learned the fundamentals of Japanese and Chinese, and I’m currently working towards reaching an A2 level in Indonesian.
Where do you see yourself in the next 5 years?
In the next five years, I still envision myself deeply immersed in advancing organizations through their data transformation journeys to reach the next level of maturity. Achieving this will require a significant shift in mindset within companies. The topic needs to be addressed holistically, breaking down both technical and cultural silos. Recognizing that this transformation won’t happen overnight, I am committed to sharing my experiences and assisting in the development of additional data leaders who can propagate this holistic approach. Together, we can accelerate the evolution towards data-driven excellence and solve even more complex problems.
What advice would you give to women who want to enter the tech industry?
Empower yourself with knowledge, seek mentors, and don’t be afraid to take risks. Your unique perspective and skills are valuable contributions to the tech industry – embrace them confidently.
Helping Professionals Achieve their Language Learning Goals
Steven Toy, Chief Executive Officer, Memrise
Hi Steven. Can you share with us the ‘backstory” of how you decided to pursue a career path in e-learning?
Early in my career, when looking for the “thing” I’d do to give back, I struggled with the options, as none of the usual choices lit a spark in me. Then I stumbled on Vision Literacy in Northern California, an adult literacy program. I joined up and got paired with an adult who had graduated high school in Northern California but still couldn’t read. We worked together for several years, and during that time,
he went from below to above the poverty line and got off of all government assistance.
That win, coupled with the whole “Give a man a fish, feed him for a day. Teach a man to fish, feed him for life.” philosophy, really set the hook for me and really covers the “learning” part of e-learning in your question.
The “e” portion of e-learning came about because I’m a bit of a geek at heart. I am always trying to use tech to improve things, and learning is a great candidate for tech improvements.
I am always trying to use tech to improve things, and learning is a great candidate for tech improvements
StevenToyhasbeensittingattheintersection of education, artificial intelligence, and mobile applications for quite some time. He has been involved in adult literacy for almost his entire professional life, including work at the Board level with ProLiteracy, and other literacy programs. Before Memrise, Steve journeyed to the AI realm at EY, where he started deploying AI techniques for real-world applications and benefits. He brought that experience to Apalon, where he was responsible for a portfolio of over 50 mobile applications. This confluence of experiences is tailor-made for shepherding a language-learning company through the explosion of opportunity technology provides. Recently, in an exclusive interview with Digital First Magazine, Steve shared his professional trajectory, what sets Memrise apart from other market competitors, the secret sauce behind Memrise’s remarkable success, personalrolemodel, significantcareer milestone, future plans, words of wisdom, and much more. The following excerpts are taken from the interview.
Brief us about the mission and vision of Memrise. What sets it apart from other market competitors?
Memrise’s Vision is to “Enrich your mind, to enrich your world.” We strive to accomplish this Vision with a Mission of “Helping people acquire a language, profitably.”
Of course, one can enrich one’s mind in many ways, but we chose language as our starting point for several reasons, not the least of which is to understand ourselves and each other, to make friends, and to discover new cultures. Said another way, we help people enrich their minds and worlds by helping people understand each other.
With this fundamental Vision and Mission, we have chosen to teach language in a manner more akin to going to a country that speaks the language and immersing yourself. By that I mean we try to get you using the language you are learning as soon as possible.
As a result, unlike most language learning apps, we don’t offer many grammar drills and memorization routines. Instead, we teach you some words and then have you hear those words in real-world contexts with YouTube and TikTok videos.
We also encourage you to use those words early in the learning journey by simulating conversations with large language models (LLMs). These LLMs conveniently lack hum an judgment in their algorithms. Fear of being judged by others thwarts most language learners from trying to speak early in the process.
You are also the Founder of Just a Bite Better LLC. What was the inspiration behind this company?
The inspiration behind Just a Bite Better (JaBB) can be traced back to my geeky
Failure is all but guaranteed if you are in the game striving for seemingly impossible goals
nature, which I mentioned earlier. As all of these new AI technologies have been unfolding before us, I wanted to start playing with them to understand them. To do that, I needed a problem to solve.
I have run triathlons for decades, which usually involve tracking certain information, such as how many miles you ran, swam, or biked, how well you slept, etc. However, tracking what you eat has always been just too time-consuming and complicated to bother with. That became the problem to solve as new technology presented options that didn’t exist before.
Can you share some valuable lessons you’ve learned in your career that have helped you succeed as a leader at Memrise?
No matter how hard you try and how much you plan, more of your ideas will fail than succeed. That doesn’t mean you shouldn’t try hard and plan
I
have not grown tired of helping people accomplish their objectives in life by improving their minds and obtaining the requisite tools, such as reading, to succeed in the world
thoughtfully. Just do it fast so you can find good ideas as fast as possible. More swings of the bat are almost always better.
What do you feel makes a Language Learning App effective and attractive?
However, user testing tells us that the language learning app that actually gets you speaking to others in a new language is certainly the most effective, as that goal relates to the users’ ultimate goal.
Whether that outcome is the most attractive to people shopping for an app is another story.
This is a good question, and the answer is remarkably unintuitive at first. This sort of question usually elicits answers like “large dictionaries,” “good gamification,” and other feature-based responses.
How has a failure, or apparent failure, set you up for later success? Do you have a “favourite failure” of yours?
As I mentioned earlier, failure is all but guaranteed if you are in the game striving for seemingly impossible goals. This is a hard lesson to learn. I certainly didn’t learn it after my first ideas failed to take flight. Somewhere along the line, a failure straw (I can’t exactly say which one it was) broke the camel’s back and caused me to stop trying to avoid failure and just do it faster. The failure to see this meta-lesson about failure earlier in my career is the one I have kept with me.
The challenge for the reader is whether they can follow the wise Charlie Munger’s advice about “Learning from the success and failure of others [as] the fastest way to get smarter and wiser without a lot of pain.”
Memrise has been a recipient of several awards and accolades over the years including Best App of 2017, Best of 2016 Self Improvement, Best Apps of 2015, and Top developer badge among others. What is the secret sauce behind its remarkable success?
It is always hard to boil success down to one thing, but if pressed to do so, I would say that Memrise’s success comes from our complete and total belief that the best way to learn a language is to get in the game and use it. It is how we all learned our first language.
This belief has led us to build different features and forsake others, and that has made all the difference.
Who is your modern-day hero and why?
I have never been given to hero worship, but the first person that comes to mind when you ask the question is Ruth Colvin (https:// en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ruth_Johnson_ Colvin), with whom I have served as a Board Member of ProLiteracy Worldwide. Ruth turned 107 late last year and still works to further the cause of adult literacy. A true inspiration.
What do you feel has been your ‘careerdefining’ moment?
I certainly hope that moment has not been written yet. However, to date, I would say helping Memrise emerge from a crowded pack of language learning apps to be #2 on the Time Magazine list of the World’s Top EdTech Companies (link) feels pretty good.
Where do you see yourself in the next 5 years?
I have not grown tired of helping people accomplish their objectives in life by improving their minds and obtaining the requisite tools, such as reading, to succeed in the world. I imagine I will still be doing that years from now. I’ll certainly be doing exactly that if I follow Ruth’s incredible example.
What advice do you have for those looking to grow their careers in your industry?
However you define my industry (EdTech, language learning, mobile apps, etc.), the advice would be the same: Don’t stop learning new stuff, don’t stop trying new things, and don’t stop swinging the bat.

What are some of the aspects of international privacy law that many people would find surprising?
International privacy law harbors several intriguing facets, especially against the backdrop of our tech-driven future, which spans emerging technologies such as artificial intelligence, data analytics, the Internet of Things, blockchain, and beyond. As we witness a digital transformation revolution across Europe and globally, it is mirrored in how legal frameworks evolve to meet the fast-changing technological landscape.
One unexpected aspect is the crucial role that law plays in leveraging innovation to benefit society and ensure order. As these emerging technologies continue to reshape industries and societal norms, legal frameworks provide essential guardrails, ensuring that technological advancements are utilized responsibly and ethically.
Furthermore, the law is fundamental in creating transparent and accountable systems within the digital domain. In a world awash with data and interconnected systems, legal regulations are vital in protecting individual privacy rights, building trust in digital ecosystems, and holding entities accountable for their actions.
Additionally, international privacy law is key in addressing discrimination and biases embedded within the vast data produced by new technologies. Through stringent privacy safeguards and anti-discrimination measures,
legal structures are designed to curb algorithmic biases, ensuring fair and equitable treatment for every individual, irrespective of their background or identity.
Ultimately, as technology continues to advance, international privacy law evolves concurrently, playing an indispensable role in shaping the future of innovation. It promotes transparency and accountability, while staunchly protecting fundamental human rights in our increasingly digital world.
Do you think it’s important, for those just starting out in the privacy sector, to earn privacy certifications or qualifications alongside professional experience? In the dynamic world of privacy, certifications can be a stepping stone for newcomers, providing a structured immersion into the sector’s principles and practices. These certifications act
In the dynamic world of privacy, certifications can be a stepping stone for newcomers, providing a structured immersion into the sector’s principles and practices
as a primer, covering the breadth of privacy laws and compliance imperatives globally, as seen with programs like the Certified Information Privacy Professional (CIPP) or the Certified Information Privacy Manager (CIPM) offered by the International Association of Privacy Professionals (IAPP).
These qualifications showcase an individual’s dedication to understanding the intricacies of privacy and data protection, often becoming a prerequisite in the hiring processes of companies that prioritize a demonstrated command of privacy regulations.
Beyond certifications in privacy, credentials in digital risk, cybersecurity, and IT audit also carry weight, marking one’s competence and helping build credibility within the field. They act as markers of proficiency, underscoring a commitment to the highest standards of practice.
Nonetheless, these certifications are not the finish line; they are part of the journey. They should run parallel to hands-on experience, which is the crucible where theoretical knowledge is honed into expertise. It is through practical application that individuals learn to navigate the subtleties of privacy challenges, enhancing their ability to contribute meaningfully to their roles.
Expertise in privacy also comes from the nuanced application of concepts such as “privacy by design” in the wild. While certifications attest to an individual’s foundational knowledge, it is their adeptness at weaving this knowledge into the fabric of real-world scenarios that truly marks a skilled professional.
In conclusion, while certifications in privacy are important, they should be viewed as part of a broader professional canvas. They complement but do not replace the rich, textured learning that
comes from experience. For those embarking on a privacy career, the interplay of knowledge gained from certifications and insights garnered from practical experience is what will craft a well-rounded, adept privacy expert.
Women aren’t the only underrepresented group in tech – what can be done to make tech more diverse across race, class, and gender?
Women have slowly become more involved in the technology field, especially in recent years, and it’s great to see more female leaders succeeding. However, we are still striving to give speeches at Women in Tech events, organize mentorship programs, and provide awareness training. International Women’s Day exists to emphasize the value of women’s efforts in life. Every system longs for balance, and as long as there is a hero, there will also be a villain. For this reason, we cannot create a great mind unless we accept the different races, classes, and genders that ensure the balance of the ecosystem as a part of a whole. The universe, the world, nature, and life can maintain their integrity with their differences and variability. The presence of women is critical in business life and in the field of technology, which is the inevitable biggest game changer of the future.
Achieving diversity and inclusion in the tech industry is essential, and initiatives to promote diversity across race, class, and gender play a vital role in this effort. Women in Tech events, mentorship programs, and awareness training are important steps toward creating a more inclusive environment. International Women’s Day serves as a reminder of the value of women’s contributions in all aspects of life.
However, achieving true diversity and inclusion requires recognizing and addressing barriers beyond gender. It’s essential to embrace individuals from diverse backgrounds, including different races, classes, and genders, as integral parts of the ecosystem. Just as every system seeks balance, embracing diversity ensures the richness and integrity of our communities and industries.
In business and technology, diversity is not only desirable but also necessary for innovation and progress. By embracing and celebrating differences, we can harness the full potential of diverse perspectives to drive positive change and shape the future. Therefore, promoting diversity and inclusion across all dimensions is critical for creating a more equitable and vibrant tech industry and society as a whole.
To foster greater diversity in the tech industry, organizations can implement various strategies:
Combat unconscious bias and discrimination in recruitment, hiring, and promotion processes through blind recruitment practices, diverse interview panels, and bias training.
Expand recruitment efforts to reach a broader pool of candidates from underrepresented backgrounds by partnering with diversity-focused organizations, attending career fairs targeting minority groups, and offering internships and mentorship programs.
Foster inclusive workplace cultures where all employees feel valued and supported, promote open dialogue about diversity, establish affinity groups, and provide training on cultural competency.
Ensure leadership positions reflect the diversity of the workforce, mentor and sponsor individuals from underrepresented groups for leadership roles, and hold leaders accountable for advancing diversity and inclusion initiatives.
Achieving diversity and inclusion in the tech industry is essential, and initiatives to promote diversity across race, class, and gender play a vital role in this effort
By implementing these strategies and fostering a culture of diversity and inclusion, the tech industry can become more representative of society as a whole and harness the unique perspectives and talents of individuals from all backgrounds.
In your academic or work career, were there any mentors who have helped you grow along the way? What’s the best piece of advice you have ever received?
Throughout my career journey, mentors have woven a rich tapestry of guidance and support, each contributing unique colors and perspectives to my professional landscape. From the bustling halls of multinational consulting firms to the academic realms where I’ve pursued knowledge,
these mentors have been invaluable sources of wisdom and inspiration.
Among the myriad of advice I’ve received, one particular guiding principle has shone brightest: “Let your work speak your worth in the pursuit of excellence.” This simple yet profound mantra has become the cornerstone of my professional ethos, urging me to lead by example and uphold the highest standards of integrity and dedication.
This guiding light reminds me that true leadership is not defined by titles or accolades, but by the authenticity and impact of one’s actions. Whether in the boardroom or the classroom, it’s the sincerity and commitment behind our work that resonate most deeply, leaving a lasting impression on those around us.
As a privacy professional, mentor, and advocate for women in technology, I’ve strived to embody this principle in every endeavor. It’s a universal truth that I share with aspiring professionals: let your actions articulate your expertise, your passion, and your unwavering commitment to making a difference in the world.
I owe a debt of gratitude to the remarkable mentors who have shaped my journey, including the esteemed professors I encountered during my master’s studies at the University of Cambridge. Their insights, gleaned from years of experience and leadership in the technology sector, have been instrumental in my growth as a company partner and leader. Their impact is truly immeasurable, and I am grateful for their existence on my path to success.
The meaning of leadership can change from one era to the other, how would you define the meaning of leadership today?
Leadership today transcends the traditional model of simply guiding teams and making decisions; it’s about fostering innovation, enabling transformation, and driving change. As a leader in the privacy and cybersecurity domains, I define leadership as the ability to anticipate the future and navigate through it with a clear vision and unwavering ethics. It’s about empowering those around you to reach their full potential while collectively striving towards common goals that push the boundaries of what’s possible.
In our era, a leader must be an orchestrator of collaboration, inclusivity, and resilience, capable of uniting diverse talents and perspectives to harness the synergistic power of a collective. It’s no longer about commanding from the top; it’s about engaging with every level of an organization, learning, adapting, and innovating together.
What motivates and inspires me daily is the dynamic and ever-evolving nature of the cybersecurity and data protection landscapes
The best leaders are those who recognize that their role is not just to lead but to serve — to act as catalysts for growth, enablers of innovation, and guardians of their team’s well-being and professional development. In the rapidly evolving landscape of technology, where the only constant is change, leaders are the architects of a resilient and adaptive culture that thrives on challenges and views disruption as an opportunity for advancement and learning.
What is it that motivates and inspires you in your everyday life?
As an engineer, I admire the unique design of nature and the universe. From a legal perspective as a privacy professional, I appreciate its balance and constantly renewed rules for the continuation of life. Technology, business dynamics, leadership qualities, and economic factors evolve rapidly, akin to the changing seasons. Those who can adapt to this dynamism and even contribute
to shaping the future are the true heroes of the business world.
What motivates and inspires me daily is the dynamic and ever-evolving nature of the cybersecurity and data protection landscapes. Each day brings new challenges and opportunities to safeguard sensitive information and defend against emerging threats. Knowing that the work I do directly impacts protecting the privacy of individuals and the integrity of organizations is incredibly motivating.
Furthermore, serving as an advocate for women in technology serves as a source of inspiration. Witnessing and contributing to positive changes in diversity within the tech sector, advocating for more inclusive practices, and supporting the next generation of women in tech fuels my passion and commitment to this field.
In essence, my drive stems from both the intellectual stimulation of tackling complex problems in my field and the social impact of working towards a more diverse and equitable tech industry. These elements are what propel me forward each day, ready to tackle the day’s challenges with energy and purpose.
Fun fact about you?
From the earliest days of my childhood, I was captivated by the stars, dreaming of adventures among the cosmos as an astronaut. Those youthful aspirations led me to immerse myself in the wonders of space exploration, from volunteering at space camps to gazing at the celestial marvels in star observatories. Even today, there’s nothing quite like the joy of sharing mythological star stories under the twinkling night sky.
But my childhood dreams didn’t stop there. Basketball became my passion, fueling my days
from the early age with the thrill of the game. I poured my heart and soul into the sport, relishing every moment on the court. However, as I reached a crossroads between pursuing a career as a professional athlete or focusing on my technical education, I chose the latter path, setting the stage for the journey that led me here.
Amidst the whirlwind of childhood dreams and athletic pursuits, literature emerged as a constant source of joy and inspiration. With many national accolades in literature before my professional endeavors, the rich tapestry of words and storytelling became an intrinsic part of who I am. Little did I know then that this love for literature would become a cornerstone of my managerial roles in multinational technology firms.
In the bustling world of business, I’ve found solace in the power of storytelling. Drawing from the depths of human nature observation and behavioral analysis, I’ve discovered that being a skilled storyteller is more than just a talent—it’s a superpower. It’s the ability to connect, inspire, and lead others towards a shared vision of success.
So, while my childhood dreams may have taken me to the stars and the basketball court, it’s the magic of literature and storytelling that continues to light up my world today. And as I embark on each new chapter of my journey, I do so with a heart full of gratitude and a smile on my face, knowing that the best is yet to come.
Where do you see yourself in the next 5 years?
I am a firm believer in the power of change and renewal. Progress stems from our collective enthusiasm for improvement and our willingness to embrace change. In today’s rapidly evolving technological landscape, predicting where
we’ll be five years from now is a daunting task. However, I am committed to being an active participant in shaping a future characterized by innovation, exemplary female leadership, the integration of diverse principles, and a relentless pursuit of excellence.
As someone who continues to teach at various universities, particularly in the fields of cybersecurity and privacy, I am deeply invested in nurturing the next generation of leaders. My goal is to inspire and empower them to become catalysts for positive change in these critical areas.
Advocacy is another passion of mine, and I am dedicated to fostering diversity and inclusivity in the tech industry, particularly among women.
