O nline learning is not the future of education. It is the present. The data shows that the number of learners reached by Massive Open Online Courses (MOOCs) increased from 300,000 to 220 million from 2011 to 2021. McKinsey & Company has reported that the number of hybrid and distanceonly students at traditional universities increased 36 per cent between 2012 and 2019. The growth was rapidly accelerated by an additional 92 per cent in 2022 when educational institutions had to close down their campuses for an indefinite period due to the spread of COVID-19. In 2021, the global online education market was valued at USD 315 Billion and projected to observe a 20 per cent CAGR from 2022 to 2028. Several educational institutions and EdTech companies are focusing on developing customised learning solutions to cater to the growing demand. Today, the emergence of online education as a steady stream

5 Higher Education Digest August 2022 of learning has blurred the lines between degree and non-degree programs. Many students now prefer short-term courses in high-demand areas such as user experience design and data analytics, which give prospective learners cost-effective, expeditious options beyond a degree program. In the changing scenarios, traditional online education providers need to think beyond degreefocused programs and consider including such offerings in their strategies to compete and grow in the online education space. To help online learning aspirants worldwide make informed decisions on their study portals, we have developed a special issue featuring 10 Most Prominent Online Institutes in 2022. 12 Higher Education Digest August 2022 S itting in a classroom taking notes for hours doesn’t work anymore. The expectations of students have evolved rapidly, with social media, on-demand knowledge and remote connectivity all contributing to learners expecting more from educational institutions. Today’s students need a richer experience. To move and be moved. They need to be actors in their own learning process. And in a degree-level program they want to find something engaging and exceptional. Within the world’s best hospitality education institutions, this expectation is met through an approach that involves the Practical Arts, industry exposure and personal exploration.

Christophe Gulli, Dean of Practical Arts, Glion Institute of Higher Education MENTOR’S MANTRA

Most of the time, young students see values as something a company has, and it’s the job of educational institutions to help them discover and solidify their own pillars of truth

Actors in Their Own Education: How Experiential Education Can Meet the Learning Expectations of a New Generation of Hospitality Management Students

Christophe joined Glion Institute of Higher Education in 2017, arriving with considerable experience of working in some of the world’s finest hotels and higher education institutions. Born in France, Christophe began his education by studying at Hotel School Poligny, achieving both a Certificat D’Aptitude (1989) and a Brevet De Technician Hotelier Restaurant (1990). He then began his hospitality career in 1991, working at the luxury Grand Hôtel de Cala Rossa & Spa for several years. Christophe then progressed into a number of Head Bartender roles at some of France’s finest hotels, including the five-star Hotel Les Airelles and the Résidence Pierre Et Vacances Le Christiana.

13 Higher Education Digest August 2022

The most successful leaders and entrepreneurs live by their values and use them to guide and inspire their business and team. Personal values are key to differentiating oneself, feeling self-assured and fulfilled, and achieving high-level professional success. Most of the time, young students see values as something a company has, and it’s the job of educational institutions to help them discover and solidify their own pillars of truth.

The enablement of personal learning journeys is an area of program development that demands ever-increasing attention, as students seek an individual experience much in the same way Generation Z does as guests. Done right, this enables students to feel they are on an educational journey unique to them, even if the program is the same for all of their cohort. This can be seen in the way one student can align to a practical art more than another, or in the way they perceive music or theater differently. The very best learning experience for students is not black and white, it is an immersion in hospitality, in new topics and environments that bring personal and professional outcomes and revelations.

On the Glion Bachelor’s, BBA1 is dedicated to the Practical Arts, immersing students in kitchen, service, housekeeping, front office and more, enabling them to explore and experience potential career pathways. Looking internally, students also take part in a mindfulness week, which includes yoga, music, theater and public speaking. The topics, which are in themselves forms of art, enable these young adults to develop key leadership abilities such as managing emotions, understanding settings, using body language to express themselves, and being comfortable in front of an audience. For modern managers the importance of image is greater than ever, and in hospitality, possibly the most diverse industry on the planet, the ability to clearly communicate and lead your multicultural team is paramount. Experimental, engaging and exciting As well as the acquisition of key leadership skills, a more holistic approach in hospitality management education is also about helping students experiment, find their strengths and weaknesses, and know themselves better. And possibly above all, it’s about making transformative learning exciting for students. As educational institutions, we have a responsibility to design programs that are attractive for a young, social media generation that are happy to quickly reject anything that doesn’t interest or engage them. Increased engagement in learning means students will be more invested in studies and more likely to attend classes, get involved in extracurricular activities and truly seize the opportunities on offer to grow and learn. This in turn leads to increased employability and a higher likelihood of success, in both their professional and personal life. “They don’t have family members nearby and they are in a new country, so participation and integration is essential…” High engagement is particularly important at Glion, where we welcome students from one hundred different countries, many with the ambition of becoming a leader. They walk onto campus with different cultures, educational backgrounds and family contexts. They don’t have family members nearby and they are in a new country, so participation and integration is essential, and the first semester in Practical Arts is a key way to achieve this.

At Glion, our approach supports students in this process by allowing them to face different cultures and viewpoints, experience camaraderie in a working environment and immerse themselves in moments of selfreflection and development. The outcome we see on the Bachelor’s is 21 year-olds transformed from their 18 yearold selves, confident and clear on what matters to them and how they want to go about achieving success.

As technology continues to develop at a rapid pace and we see the increased use of AI, robots and autonomy across hospitality, possessing the advanced soft skills, emotional intelligence and leadership skill set that comes from a more experiential approach to learning is without a doubt a way to future-proof high-level professional success. At Glion, our career-focused and immersive bachelor’s and Master’s programs equip students with the ability, expertise and confidence to lead right from graduation day, and well into the future – whatever it may bring. Engaging, exciting and truly transformative, they have been specifically designed to meet the expectations of a generation of students that demand a progressive learning experience.

16 Higher Education Digest August 2022

T he hospitality industry is known to be customer-centric industry, an approach that hospitality business schools are keen to pass on to students by providing a rich education in soft skills. Once on the job market, young graduates have an extensive background that are second to none and include communication, presentation, manners and leadership skills. However, managers are required, no matter the industry, to also master more quantitative fields such as economics, finance and accounting – what more commonly call "hard skills". Indeed, the ability to understand one's environment at the macroeconomic level, to plan and express one's vision in quantitative terms, but also to understand and communicate with financial experts are essential assets. Therefore, in addition to the hospitality industry’s cherished soft skills, hospitality management courses now place a strong emphasis on more quantitative areas, giving future graduates the tools to distinguish themselves from graduates of other fields of study. For example, a good hospitality manager needs to have a thorough understanding of economics, financial markets, management and financial strategies, as well as being able to understand and identify the ins and outs of new technologies (e.g. digitalisation, decentralization, data protection, big data). 18 Higher Education Digest August 2022 as our world becomes more and more sophisticated and the labor market challenging, a broad spectrum of skills, both quantitative and qualitative, are needed to make one’s way among the competition.

The advantage of studying at a top hospitality business school is that the skills developed to be a future good hospitality manager are useful well beyond that industry, they are transferable to other sectors such as finance. Indeed, in the face of digitalisation, the financial industry must rethink its business model. New technologies, big data and blockchain open up perspectives that were unimaginable 10 years ago. In this fast-moving environment, it is crucial for financial institutions to differentiate themselves by seeking diversity and new skills to broaden the service dimension of their offer. This differentiation requires the recruitment of talent with both soft and hard skills. On the soft skills” side, the human centric aspect is more and more critical - a recognized quality of the hospitality industry. However, these skills are purposeless without the ability to understand and operate in a highly sophisticated financial world. Conscious of the importance that team diversity can play in this strategic repositioning, the financial industry is now taking a keen interest in students graduating from hospitality business schools. They represent a valuable source of talent, precisely because they combine quantitative skills with a strong customer focus. These graduates are now frequently recruited by the Big Four for their know-how and client orientation, by financial and/or real estate consultancies for their professionalism and market knowledge, or for example by private banks for their ability to understand the financial markets and communicate with clients. To put it simply, in a financial world where the human factor is back in the limelight, knowing how to mix business - hard skills- with pleasure -soft skills- seems to have become a must.

Online learning is not a pandemic-made phenomenon. Students who cannot attend the in-person classes have been utilizing distance learning as a solution to gain degrees. However, today technology has improved the quality of such programs, and now online learning has become as important as physical classrooms. In the online education model, teachers and students can set their own learning pace, and there’s the added flexibility of setting a schedule that fits everyone’s agenda. Therefore, an online educational platform allows for a better balance of work and studies. Finding the best one that suits your education needs is a daunting task. To help learners in this process, we have come up with the ‘10 Most Prominent Online Institutes in 2022’ that reach out to every nook and cranny of the globe with their innovative learning programs.

Higher Education Digest August 2022 n individual’s career is greatly influenced by the college chosen to complete one’s education. When narrowing down on which college to go ahead with, there are various parameters to consider: faculty capability, overall infrastructure, scholarships extended, research projects undertaken, campus placements, industry-specific relevancy, technologies adopted, curriculum, and top alumni takeaways. Helping you tick every requirement off the checklist is Boston City Campus, founded in 1991 by Professor Ari Kratz. The college is an accredited Higher Education Institution and Private College. Boston offers Postgrad, Degrees, Diplomas and higher certificates online and short learning programs. All courses offered can be completed online, or students can choose to go to the campus and study with colleagues and friends. All in all, studies can be done part-time, full-time, or entirely online. “At the center of our institutional goals lies our commitment to the learning and development of our students that both shape and form a culture of excellence, resilience, and entrepreneurship,” opines Ari Katz, CEO of Boston City Campus. Higher Education Digest August 2022 Founded in 1991, Boston City Campus has continually added courses to its offering, giving students more and more choices. Currently, it has over 100 courses for learners to choose from.

Maintaining Market and Industry Relevancy

26 Higher Education Digest August 2022

Over the years, the college has successfully expanded its reach globally with more than 47 Student Support Centres (SSCs) that offer tuition support to its students and other stakeholders. Boston’s success is attributed to providing relevant, market-related, in-demand qualifications that exceed industry requirements and closely link to workplace specifications and opportunities. The institution works relentlessly to be recognized as a valuable contributor to the industry. “Boston is focused on delivering relevant programs in the fast-growing areas of the economy, extensively upgrading campus facilities and creating new learning and social areas, and the development and expansion of quality education and support services,” says Ruan Venter, Registrar at Boston CityContinuallyCampus.

striving to stay ahead of the technology growth curve, Boston leverages the power of AI and a system called MaaS (Mentoring as a Service) to efficiently monitor and manage students and assist them if necessary. The institute’s training advisors use this technology to provide ‘personal attention to the students and virtually eliminate the gap in distance studies. “Boston has always relied on technology as an effective learning methodology as technology ensures Ari Katz, CEO of Boston City Campus

Natalie Rabson, Counsellor at Boston City Campus

Ruan Venter, Registrar at Boston City Campus

27 Higher Education Digest August 2022 academic consistency, quality, delivery and validity of all materials and knowledge transfer,” reveals Natalie Rabson, Counsellor at Boston City Campus. Natalie also tells us, “Boston offered its students an MTN 30gig data package at a hugely discounted rate to assist students who otherwise didn’t have internet access.”

The Boston Higher Education department has devised an intricate system that operates with the MaaS AI (artificial intelligence system). So essentially, what does this mean for a student? It means the student is granted access to assistance with their coursework. Queries put forth by students are addressed by the assigned tutor. This task can be carried out via email, in person, telephonically, or through Skype. This translates to the student only achieving progress in their coursework as they master the work that has been completed. This means you can get topics explained and re-explained until you attain satisfaction. Enhancing Learning for You

Proactively Monitoring Every Learner

The academy’s system has been designed to be highly proactive. For instance, if a student has not opened Boston is proud to be associated with these Designated Quality Partners, Quality Assurance Partners, Learning and Quality Assurance Bodies, and Assessment Quality Partners of the Quality Council for Trades and Occupations, as well as eminent international and local professional, industry and statutory bodies.

28 Higher Education Digest August 2022 their assignment document by the allocated time before a deadline, the designated tutor will receive an alert. The student will then receive an SMS alerting them that an assignment is due and they need to review it. If it continues to remain unopened despite the two previous attempts, further action is taken by this unique system to motivate the student to complete the work. This system is very distinctive in its ability to predict student performance and in its ability to raise student success. “While Boston offers online qualifications, we are a hands-on institution. This means that students still receive ‘personal’ attention. Students can email queries, call their lecturers, or receive video calls to enhance their studies or assist with specific academic or other queries. So, while it is considered education in the distance mode, the institution’s staff is available, friendly, accommodating, and attentive,” adds Ari. In fact, when most educational institutions were almost crippled by the onset of the Coronavirus pandemic, Boston emerged victorious even during these trying times. Semeno Phuti agrees, “In this lockdown, things Boston is accredited with the British Accreditation Council – providing graduates with a globally recognised education and is a candidate for accreditation for specific programmes with the Accreditation Council for Business School and Programs (ACBSP), United States of America.

The faculty functioned as strong pillars of the institution during these trying times. Additionally, to successfully carry out the functionalities that MaaS has to offer while ensuring every student receives a quality education, the presence of skilled and highly experienced faculty is one of the key ingredients. The faculty on board the Boston City Campus is very well qualified and possesses the required expertise that brings richness to their academic teachings. Being accredited by the CHE means that all staff must be well qualified in their subject matter, and their CVs are selected for education and an added value to the institution. Going Global!

The current business industry demands a global mindset for anyone aspiring to establish a career in the management domain. ‘International’ is a profound concept and buzzword in today’s marketplace. It holds massive leverage in a CV. The Boston City Campus has been recognized and awarded accreditation as an Independent Higher Education institution by the British Accreditation Council (BAC). The BAC is recognized globally as an influential voice on standards and quality for the education sector. All in all, graduates can quickly gain international qualifications using their Boston diploma or degree as a starting point. “We are thrilled to bring these benefits to our graduates,” says Katz. She continues, “Topping up your local qualification with an accredited international qualification makes you a global player. Moreover, even when you operate locally, it makes you more attractive to your local employers.” Boston is now also a candidate for accreditation of specific programmers by the ACBSP – the Accreditation Council of Business Schools and Programs (United States of America). International students are drawn by the excellent local accreditation and international recognition of the campus. In addition, the costs for all students are favorable. Additionally, Boston scholarships are awarded twice a year. All students must apply and be accepted to the qualifications of their choice and must meet the specific course requirements they have chosen. Foreign students must receive a HESA metric equivalency if they are high school graduates. “We pride ourselves on being firmly established as a community builder with extensive partnerships with Public and Private Sector organizations, to actively contribute to socio-economic development within South Africa,” says Ari. Making Customer Service a Priority Boston City Campus has every aspect related to this sector covered. The novel MaaS offering is equipped to ensure superior levels of customer service are attained. Monitoring and motivating students to succeed will drastically lower the shocking drop-out rate found at universities. These drop-outs are witnessed due to the student’s inability to access assistance, either academic or administrative. This is where the institute’s innovative MaaS offering comes to the fore and meets every student’s queries and expectations.

Boston is strong in graduate support and customer services, making the overall pass rate very high. As we look ahead into the future and what it holds for us, Boston envisages liaising with corporate and industry to ensure qualifications are relevant and will arm the graduates with appropriate work-ready skills. Simultaneously, Boston will continue to innovate and introduce new age qualifications that will meet and exceed the demand of the workplace.

29 Higher Education Digest August 2022 aren’t simply the way we thought, and it is a privilege and honor to see how our facilitators are trying their best to communicate with us to solve all problems that we face through our studies. However, many still say that thatthere is little to no interaction with online learning – this couldn’t be further away from the truth. Teaching is so much more than a Zoom call, or uploading countless documents to a platform. Lecturers need to deliver much more than that, from responding to questions, grading assessments, giving feedback and providing one-to-one support for students – and this is exactly where the blended approaches come in. With increased access to sophisticated technology, data and artificial intelligence, online learning providers are in the position to truly deliver the best digital learning and teaching experiences and that shouldn’t be stopped altogether

It’s more than just Zoom While online learning has been accelerated in the last year, interest in technology-based learning was growing exponentially before the pandemic. Learning can now happen anytime, anywhere – removing barriers such as location, time of learning, and even speed of training. Schools, colleges and universities can now take advantage of digital resources which have taken years to develop, and support learning as they wish.

31 Higher Education Digest August 2022

Here’s why:

T he impact of the pandemic has been particularly felt by those within the education sector, with both educators and learners alike having to quickly adopt new ways of teaching remotely and training online. Many universities have had to change the way they operate, but with life starting to return to normal, an international education report claimed UK universities needed to deliver faceto-face learning if they’re to continue charging some of the highest fees in the world. With increased access to sophisticated technology, data and artificial intelligence, online learning providers are in the position to truly deliver the best digital learning and teaching experiences and that shouldn’t be stopped altogether. Instead, universities should encourage a blended learning experience, providing a mix of remote and face-to-face learning.

As the role of technology increases within universities, online strategies to support teacher development and ensure all the correct training for them is provided, should become priority first and foremost. An important part of this strategy will be to partner with trusted companies and training providers who have tried and tested systems, as well as content that can be tailored towards each student and teacher’s needs.

32 Higher Education Digest August 2022

The Skills Network is developing the use of predictive analytics, which will explore a range of predictive markers, such as previous highest-level qualifications achieved, to indicate individual learner success before commencing training. Online learning doesn’t just bring an increase of data, but it also adds a bolster of benefits to universities. From being able to accommodate more international students resulting in additional money and funding along with being able to cater the curriculum to a more global audience across different time zones.

Offers flexibility designed to get the most productivity In a successful online learning space, students should have clarity on what they will be able to learn during the online lesson, and how this will be consolidated at the end of their lesson and course. Teachers have to ensure that their students are taking the curriculum on board. As with an in-person lesson, that can be discovered through regular testing and homework assignments. However, in order to learn effectively, students may have different requirements. It’s not surprising that people are most productive at different times of the day depending on their personality, lifestyle or routine, but yet pre-pandemic, young adults scheduled their learning based on the working day. Now, with the growth of online learning, students have the flexibility to learn during the times that are most beneficial for them, helping them retain the information and use it successfully, not only passing exams or assessments, but remembering it later, too. Allows for tailoring a student’s online learning journey With the rise of online learning comes the increase of data which teachers can analyse to determine how well students are progressing, therefore giving them the tools to develop teaching strategies going forward. This data can be sourced to record student attendance, to monitor how often each student contributes within online chatrooms and discussions and to check whether they are submitting work on time. Having access to this data should allow teachers to understand the support required by each individual student. As the frequency of online lessons increase, inevitably so does the record of data, allowing teachers and heads of departments to have a deeper understanding into not just student, but teacher performance too, and how to address areas of improvement. This level of understanding should consequently allow teachers to prove that they have developed both strengths and weaknesses identified from the data.

It allows universities to upskill their teachers

Overall, universities providing a blended learning approach allows both teachers and students to develop and level-up in their chosen subjects and in others too, while experiencing a more tailored, approach to their own education.

The development of innovative tools such as the diagnostic tool, created by The Skills Network benefits learners by saving their time and enriching their education by highlighting the key areas that each person will need to dedicate more time towards in their modules. This course specific ‘diagnostic assessment’ helps providers to develop a personalised curriculum plan that designs a learner’s educational journey around their individual needs, gaps and learning preferences. Lasallians Remote and Engaged Approach for Connectivity in Higher Education (R.E.A.C.H.) is DLSU’s response to the pandemic challenges in academic learning. “We are responding to this situation by fully adopting an alternate mode of education that DLSU initiated more than ten years ago, which is technologyenabled or blended learning,” informs Br. Bernard S. Oca FSC, President, De La Salle University.

CREATING AN LEARNINGSTUDENT-FACULTYENGAGINGENVIRONMENT

Higher Education Digest August 2022 he onset of the Coronavirus pandemic had a catalytic effect on the already expanding e-learning sector. In an attempt to ensure a continuous teaching-learning process, educational institutions across the globe have begun implementing online learning platforms. As digital learning emerges as an imperative resource for uninterrupted education, institutions are scrambling to evaluate and accept various advancing technologies and ensure seamless education delivery. While it is observed that most educational institutions are still unable to effortlessly adopt innovative and strategic approaches that support training and education continuity, De La Salle University (DLSU), located in the Philippines, has been stimulating innovation since even before the pandemic.

Higher Education Digest August 2022 Nestled in the heart of Manila, De La Salle University is home to local and international students seeking quality education for a brighter future ahead.

Before delving into this offering, the Brother President gives us a few details about the university and its heritage. DLSU was established in 1911 by the Catholic teaching congregation Brothers of the Christian Schools. The school was incorporated as De La Salle College (DLSC) on February 12, 1912, and was granted university status on February 19, 1975. It has since then become De La Salle University (DLSU). “De La Salle University positions itself as a leading Philippine higher education institution, renowned for its academic excellence, groundbreaking research, and empowering community engagement,” adds Br. Bernie. The university continually strives to be on par with advancing technologies and, as such, has been recognised as one of the most productive in research among private HEIs in the Philippines. The university also possesses the most number of Centers of Excellence bestowed by the Commission on Higher Education.

DLSU offers various programs under its seven colleges and one school, which are in education, liberal arts, business, economics, sciences, engineering, computer studies, and law. “The University established a set of course and instructional design criteria for the remote delivery of courses through an online platform. The criterion is designed to guide faculty members to ensure that learning outcomes are met through synchronous and asynchronous sessions,” elucidates Br. Bernie. Formative and summative assessments are provided to ensure the quality of learning. The academic unit heads and course coordinators supervise the specific courses to ensure compliance with the quality criteria. Br. Bernie expresses, “For DLSU, R.E.A.C.H. is the most viable and flexible alternative for our students. It emphasizes the importance of engagement between faculty and students. Unlike fully machine-assisted online learning, the University’s remote learning is faculty-directed and facilitated using an online platform to ensure quality education.”

In response to the challenges in academic learning brought about by the pandemic, DLSU launched the Lasallians Remote and Engaged Approach for Connectivity in Higher Education (R.E.A.C.H.).

Offering a Comprehensive Suite of Services Pivoting toward the university’s aforementioned offering, Lasallians R.E.A.C.H is anchored on eight key elements. De La Salle University offers pure online classes to ensure quality and relevant education through faculty-directed and facilitated remote learning. The offering provides a broad range of initiatives and projects that shoulders the university’s attempt to create a more conducive online learning environment. This proves beneficial for both faculty and students. Br. Bernie says, “Lasallians R.E.A.C.H. provides opportunities for faculty and students to connect through chats, threaded discussions, and conferences. This remote learning also allows students to undertake collaborative works, including research and

Continually endeavoring to stay abreast of industry trends and changes, De La Salle University equipped itself even during the pandemic by leveraging R.E.A.C.H.

Battling COVID-19

In conjunction with this, the university has placed the Lasallian Open Online Learning Program (LOOP). This program has allowed students to cross-enrol themselves for different subjects across colleges. Training programs on online pedagogy for faculty of other institutions are also made available by the University. Open access courses from Animo Space are also available for the Lasallian community to explore. “Through various online platforms, we can enrich the relationship of our faculty and students for a more productive and considerate online learning environment,” explains Br. Bernie.

Lending a Helping hand Perfectly aware that some students are financially burdened, and school expenses can negatively impact the student’s learning journey. Coming to the aid, DLSU adjusted fees for undergraduate and graduate students and eased payment terms, emergency relief, scholars’ support, and support for students living away from home. Technology support was also provided for students, such as provision for internet and computers.

39 Higher Education Digest August 2022 creative projects, with their teacher and classmates.” To assure quality remote education delivery is undeterred, the university offers online course development deloading and assistance, connectivity allowance for the faculty, and Zoom educational enterprise for the entire University.

Over the years, De La Salle University has gained quite a strong foothold in this sector. Envisioning an even brighter future, DLSU aims to continue to scale to newer heights in the future.

During these uncertain times, select personnel belonging to the Lasallian community remain present at work. The safety of the workforce and their families are assured by implementing strict health and safety guidelines for those entering the campus. Moreover, clusters assigned to employees should follow three-shift campus access and automatic recurring quarantine. Health safety nets and daily health checks are also followed by the University. Students can avail themselves of the emergency health aid.

Amid the pandemic, DLSU emphasizes its support for the community by offering online support programs for faculty, staff, and students. Under the DLSU Care Desk platform initiated by the Lasallian Center for Inclusion, Diversity and Well-being, Lasallians may access the various services on mental health, telemedicine, and spiritual accompaniment. Key programs for the betterment of student life are now available virtually and can be accessed by students anytime, anywhere. Some of the programs extended to the students are virtual career services, an online student activity approval system, Lasallian Student Welfare Program, Lasallian Personal Effectiveness Program (LPEP), and the Graduate Student Orientation Program Course in AnimoSpace. “The shift to online learning allowed DLSU to widen its international partnerships by offering international co-taught online courses for students. The LasallianXP program also allows students to enroll in free electives and minors programs,” adds Br. Bernie. DLSU is a firm believer in the holistic well-being of its students and, as such, has deployed Academic Safety Nets. This enables the student to withdraw from their courses if needed, and their decision is protected under the no-fail policy. Through this, students can continue their studies while also dedicating time to and prioritizing their families, health, and well-being.

42 Higher Education Digest August 2022

T he application of Artificial Intelligence to the field of Education, usually called AIEd, has a long and venerable history. The International Artificial Intelligence in Education Society (IAIED) has been active since 1993 when the Springer journal International Journal of Artificial Intelligence in Education was launched and an international conference in this research area has been organised since 2000. The field has seen an explosion of research interest in the last decade and several commercial tools have also been released in recentOneyears.ofthe principal goals for AI applications in Education is to adapt the learning materials and the learning process to every learner. Every student is unique and brings to the learning environment a unique set of socioeconomic, emotional, and educational backgrounds that are best served by a set of educational texts, audio, and video material and a learning process that is adapted to that background. Unfortunately, this is hardly ever the case in today’s educational institutions and most students use a standardised set of materials and a standard lecture format that can be tweaked only slightly for a specific student. One of the visions long articulated in AIEd Is the possibility of developing “smart textbooks” that incorporate webbased and other learning material and dynamically adapt themselves to the needs of the student. And these textbooks will be paired with an “Intelligent Tutoring System”, that monitors the student’s progress, or the lack of it provides contextual help, fetches other learning material as and when needed, and breaks down solutions to complex problems in order to enhance understanding. An example of such an adaptive platform is iTalk2Learn, an open-source European project to develop a mathematics tutoring system. It is meant for students of age 5-11. The system interacts with students An innovation that is widely used in AIEd is a gamification of the learning process and the use of tests and quizzes in a game format

43 Higher Education Digest August 2022

Higher Education Digest August 2022 through a speech interface, diagnoses learning gaps faced by students, and recommends lessons using an AIAsmodel.theiTalk2Learn project page explains: [iTalk2Learn} will allow students to learn from a system in a more natural way than ever before. This will enable more personalised learning at scale and help empower educators to deliver the right lesson at the right time for every child.

iTalk2Learn is an interdisciplinary project that pools expertise from machine learning, user modelling, intelligent tutoring systems, natural language processing, educational psychology and mathematics education.

Other Intelligent Tutoring Systems available currently include Pearson’s calculus learning tool called AIDA which can help students learn calculus concepts and guide students to answers. Carnegie Learning has tools for learning mathematics, world languages,

The reason is that the critical algorithms and methodologies necessary to progress in AIEd have been introduced only recently. The most critical technology that is going to drive AIEd growth is the development of Large Language Models such as GPT3 which are essential tools for designing dynamic textbooks and intelligent tutoring, especially those that need the advanced conversational capability. Another key invention is few-shot learning which will be necessary for dynamic adaptations in learning. This means that AIEd, a field that has seen less progress than was perhaps envisaged when it was launched in the 1990s, is poised for an explosive take-off.

45 Higher Education Digest August 2022 English language arts, and computer science. These tools were originally developed by researchers at Carnegie-Mellon University and have been licensed.

Although AIEd has been around for a long time and several AIEd tools have been available for a decade now, the field still lacks a truly breakthroughproduct

The AI learning tool that is most familiar to the general public is Duolingo. It is available as a web or mobile-based app that has been used by millions of users to learn a wide variety of world languages such as French, Spanish, Japanese, Arabic, Hindi and others. It was developed by an AI researcher and is a very successfulAnotherbusiness.areawhere AIEd is starting to have a lot of impacts is the design and development of new assessment systems. Traditional assessment tasks have two major shortcomings. First, they are deployed at discrete instants of time and thus provide only a few snapshots of the learning outcome. Also, they are standardised and the same test is administered to all students. AI-Ed promises major changes in this paradigm. Assessments can be based on continuous interactions with the student and monitoring of their learning actions such as speech in the case of iTalk2Learn and keystrokes in the case of AIDA, so that a continuous record of their learning is utilised rather than just a few snapshots. Also, assessments can be tailored to the needs and capabilities of each individual learner. One such assessment system was developed at University College London (UCL) for English language testing. An assessment solution that is available commercially is assess.ai. It is used by the California Department of Human Resources, Singapore Assessment and Examinations Board and many others. It uses AI to generate and publish test items, mark essays, provide automated psychometrics, and proctor test-takers remotely. An innovation that is widely used in AIEd is a gamification of the learning process and the use of tests and quizzes in a game format. For instance, Thinker Math is a mathematics learning system that uses games and rewards to motivate learners. Another innovation that has appeared recently is the use of social networks to boost learning. Students can connect with their peers over a social network, compare notes, and learn from each other in a peer-to-peer setting which has been shown to enhance learning. These networks use the same AI tools that are used by other more mainstream platforms such as Facebook, Twitter, Instagram etc. to construct feeds and increase engagement.Onesuch network is Brainly which bills itself as the knowledge-sharing community where 350 million students and experts put their heads together to crack their toughest homework questions.

Although AIEd has been around for a long time and several AIEd tools have been available for a decade now, the field still lacks a truly breakthrough product. Intelligent textbooks are still a bit unwieldy and are not in wide use, Intelligent Tutoring Systems are limited to only a few areas of instruction and often feel a bit clunky. New directions such as intelligent examinations, gamification, and networked learning are yet to take off in a big way. However, in the next ten years, we are likely to make more rapid progress in this area.

W ith the changing times and technology becoming more accessible to everyone online learning and hybrid learning has been gaining great attention. But what really is the difference between the two and which way of learning is the most effective? These are some questions we all have in our minds as we see the education sector taking different shapes around the globe. Online classes take place 100% online while hybrid classes are partially online and partially offline. Hybrid learning is also called blended learning, which includes lessons that require laboratory experiments or in-person group activities that are done in offline mode. Weighing the Two Make no mistake, both online classes and hybrid classes have their own set of advantages and disadvantages. While online classes can help you juggle through various other things you might be caught up with (For eg. If your child does not seem to take much interest in studies but is doing very well in curriculum activities, you can dedicate a flexible amount of time towards their scope of interest while also making sure they receive their necessary education online.), it can also mean that you leave everything up to the student to assess, evaluate and learn everything without anyone else’s help, or without speaking about it with a friend, or to a teacher one-to-one.

In hybrid learning, your child dedicates a certain number of days towards going to school making likeminded peers learn and socialize with their friends and teachers while spending the other days focusing on other curricular activities. But at the same time, there will be a constant break that can often break the rhythm that a student is in, be it online or offline. Both these methods will have an impact on the child, positive or negative, and will also give them exposure to different atmospheres. In such circumstances, hybrid learning stands out and provides the balance which may benefit a student more than online learning. In hybrid learning, your child dedicates a certain number of days towards going to school making likeminded peers learn and socialize with their friends and teachers while spending the other days focusing on other curricular activities

55 Higher Education Digest August 2022

Communication Barriers are Addressed

While some students are active during the online classes it has been a major concern for teachers that many other children do not interact during online classes, making them feel either outcasts or students not taking their lessons seriously. It has also been observed by teachers that often many students appear only for examinations and this could be a grave concern for the teachers and parents. Even the all-online giants who were all during the lockdown phase such as Byju’s are joining the offline education and creating coaching centres. They know it cannot be all online, not all the time for 10 or 12 years. They will also be thinking of choosing a hybrid mode. In hybrid learning, it is essential for students to go in person at least once or twice a week which keeps them in touch with the feel of education. Besides, the Indian culture is deeply rooted in the association between teachers and students (or Guru and shishya).

As much as online classes help your child work according to their personal progress from the comfort of their homes, hybrid classes allow your child to progress at their own pace but the influence of their peers and intervention of the teachers will keep them levelheaded and grow together. Hybrid classes only require you to invest in technology, not completely depend on it. In the long run, this will matter a lot. Hybrid learning will encourage capacity building and help transform a student’s mind towards positive growth.

It is believed that teachers encourage young minds to think, hands to create and hearts to love and unveil the true potential of a student. Online classes set no geographical boundaries, which makes them very accessible to constantly travelling students. You can have access to your prerecorded sessions any time of the day no matter where you are. Your only barrier could be a good internet connection. Unlike in hybrid classes, you might be asked to be present in person a couple of times a week because of which you will have to be present in the city or town that you have your classes in. In hybrid classrooms on the other hand attendance, the deliberate use of technology automatically reduces the need for excessive screen time. Because ultimately, the focus is not a student merely attending but on students’ engagement and participation.

In hybrid learning, it is essential for students to go in person at least once or twice a week which keeps them in touch with the feel of education

Many believe methods to get hands-on components and save transportation and many other expenses when not required. Though there are many non-challenging subjects that can be completely conducted online, it has still been proven that when students meet together and share their thoughts and perspectives about various topics helps them to challenge themselves while looking and learning about various perspectives that a problem can be tackled with. In many ways, it has been shown that even though online classes have been a great benefit to students, it has not challenged them to the best of their potential due to a lack of socializing with like-minded peers and building relationships with them.

How the Metaverse is Changing Aspects of Indian Education

59 Higher Education Digest August 2022

How Metaverse can change the face of Indian education for the better Imagine a classroom where the instructor is in Mumbai but the students are from far-flung places such as Bhopal, Ranchi or even a remote village in easternmost India. The interaction in such a scenario is typical of Metaverse is a virtual universe created by combining the powers of Virtual Reality (VR), Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Augmented Reality (AR) in the online space

T he onset of the pandemic and the resulting lockdown, in the beginning of 2020, placed a smartphone in the hands of every student: be it a kindergartener or a student pursuing a master’s degree. This 180° turn in education from traditional to digital took place almost overnight. Zoom, Microsoft teams, Google Meet and other such platforms got into the act to connect the teacher to their students. Located in one part of the city, the teacher was able to reach out to students in their own homes in different parts of that city. International students could attend lectures taking place in their universities located in other countries. Many students, who left for their hometowns with their families on account of the pandemic, continued to access their classes online. This giant digital leap in education opened up a world of immense innovations and possibilities called the Metaverse.1 What is the Metaverse? Most of us might have come across the word ‘Metaverse’ only after Facebook changed its name to Meta but it has been around for quite some time. Metaverse is a virtual universe created by combining the powers of Virtual Reality (VR), Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Augmented Reality (AR) in the online space. It is inhabited by people in the form of their avatars who perform all the activities that they would in real life: engaging in work or pursuing leisure activities or even learning something new. In short, it provides an immersive experience.

The term ‘Metaverse’ was used for the first time in 1992 in a science fiction novel Snow Crash by Neal Stephenson. His metaverse was a 3-dimensional virtual world which was a refuge for people — in the form of their avatars or digital personas — escaping from an oppressive reality. Today’s Metaverse is similar to that world but promises to be much more beneficial to us in many areas of life, especially in the field of education.

Now let’s go a level deeper. Imagine, in this same classroom, the students can create their own avatars and not only interact with the teacher but can network with other students just like they would do in a physical classroom. They can chat with each other, share notes, discuss topics and even have meals together. And all this while they are physically in different parts of the city/ world. This learner-centric model is exciting, right? Get set to be amazed at the way the Metaverse is poised to revolutionize education in India:

From this we can conclude that the Metaverse, the great equalizer for education with its inclusivity and new approach, can bring exciting changes in this sector for both the teachers and the students. A vast work force with cutting-edge knowledge and information can put India in the lead in terms of its technological and production prowess

1) Democratization of Education: One of the significators of progress is access to quality education. Lack of financial support could be one of the factors that hinder it. But another important but overlooked reason could also be the distance. Inability to travel to metropolitan cities where, often, better quality education is available can hamper academic growth. This is especially true in the case of girls where parents would rather forgo educating their daughters than let them travel to and stay in unknown places. But here’s how the Metaverse can be the gamechanger: it has no geographical constraints so quality education can be made easily available to all at their fingertips.

60 Higher Education Digest August 2022 the online classes that were being conducted during the pandemic. The format of education at that time was unidirectional with the teacher doing all the talking or sharing pre-recorded videos of the subject matter.

4) Customized Tutoring: The Metaverse, by virtue of its very nature, can facilitate individualized tutoring based on the learning style of the student. This can enrich the students’ grasp of the subject matter and increase the level of their engagement with it.

3) Easy Upskilling: Certain industries require constant upskilling of their labor force in order to remain competitive and relevant in today’s rapidly-changing world. This requires specialized training from experts in the field and even hands-on experience of the new machinery or technology. Relocating this process from the physical world to the Metaverse will not only make financial sense but also save a lot of time on the logistics. A vast work force with cutting-edge knowledge and information can put India in the lead in terms of its technological and production prowess.

Conclusion Large multinationals have been experimenting with Metaverse for hiring and onboarding.2 Meta (previously known as Facebook) is investing in AR for over 10 million students and 1 million teachers in India. The National Education Policy (NEP) intends to assimilate Artificial Intelligence into the Indian Education system.

2) Saving on Costly Infrastructure: The cost of building good quality classrooms and equipping laboratories with superior machinery, both scientific and mechanical, is prohibitive. Thus, economics is one of the biggest challenges that campuses face. With the Metaverse coming into play, a larger student demographic can access the best of these services at a fraction of the cost. This reduction in digital divide will benefit not just the student but also the country as a better educated and trained population joins the workforce.

Higher Education Digest August 2022 resently, the aged population is at its highest point in the entire human history. As per WHO’s latest reports, the proportion of the world’s population over 60 years will nearly double from 12% to 22% between 2015 and 2050. On top of this, 80% of older people will be living in low- and middle-income countries by 2050. Unfortunately, most people are unaware of the concept of population aging and how it will affect their society, policies, programs, and economy. Therefore, education in gerontology is of great importance, especially for students who are driven by a purpose to make a positive impact in the world.

A Rich Historical Backdrop

The USC Leonard Davis School was established through a gift from Leonard Davis, a pioneer in developing insurance for older Americans. Together with benefits crusader Ethel Percy Andrus, Davis created the organization now known as American Association for Retired Persons (AARP). After Andrus’s death, he led the efforts to create a lasting memorial research center at the USC campus called the Ethel Percy Andrus Gerontology Center.

INDUSTRY PERSPECTIVE

69 Higher Education Digest August 2022 D o not lose hope! To meet your career aspirations, refresh your vows engraving the fact that e-learning is the future, and you will certainly rise high if you travel with the time and do your efforts joyfully!

Dear Students, Let’s be grateful to the Almighty that we are alive to see all facets of life. Understandably, all of you carry dreams and they are battling challenges right now, owing to the pandemic. But challenges only help us rise provided we have an eye for observing opportunities that arise simultaneously. Talking specifically about students aspiring to go to Australia, you should stay hopeful and do your best with the best of options available to you to continue learning. Do not lose on time. The third wave may slow down things and it might take some time to finally board the plane to Australia, or any other country. We must not forget, what we all went through in India in the second wave, last year (April-May 2021). The idea is not to feel scared, but we must take action wisely. Generally, the sense is that Omicron is not such an intense virus and people are taking about 3-4 days to recover. Yet, we can’t be careless, for even a small illness can lead to dire consequences if not taken care of. So being responsible for oneself and others is important. What many world-class higher education institutions or we are doing at Deakin University presently, will help both students and parents understand that their future is secured and will have ample opportunities if the former is taking studies seriously. Sports management, Health Management, Cyber Security, Business Analytics, Psychology, Media Relations, Artificial Intelligence, and Machine Learning are the most popular programmes amongst students, these days. The reason is the way students are discerning the future. Students learning a traditional subject as a major, are integrating it with a futuristic minor. Marketing, for example, now, is coupled with the knowledge of digital marketing too. During the pandemic, the health sector is booming with professionals who have knowledge and skills in health management, health technology solutions, community health, health analytics, etc.

In Australia, if you are studying in any master’s degree for minimum of two years on-campus, you can apply to stay back and work for three years. And in regional Australia, you can work for four years post For any overseas education aspirant, borders are now open, and it is unlikely that even in the current situation, the borders will be shut down

The hybrid model has emerged as a fascinating example of the phrase “necessity is the mother of invention.” As the pandemic, ideally, fades, it will mutate further, spawning a slew of clever sub-models under the ‘hybrid’ umbrella. In total, resistance to change will not help any of us, whether we talk about students, teachers, or institutionsStudents, worldwide.you, surely have a bright future. You will be judged on your eagerness and agility to adapt to the trends and ability to sync with the changes. Keep looking for the opportunities and moving forward to carve out a niche for yourself in the new normal!

On-shore international students are now more likely to be exposed to opportunities for mentoring and securing employment in various sectors.

For example, when students enroll at Deakin, they automatically are registered to Deakin Talent. This platform is a completely digitised service for students where we align the profile of students to match their aspirational goals tapping their skills during their course of study. And at end of the course, we link them to the best companies. If a student wants to go back to India, there’s an option to register with Indian companies too. For any overseas education aspirant, borders are now open, and it is unlikely that even in the current situation, the borders will be shut down. International students are continuously coming to Australia and are being supported strongly by the Government and respective Universities. As reported by the Australian Financial Review on Thursday, January 13, 2022, the Omicron variant of COVID-19 has fuelled labour shortages across several sectors in Australia, prompting the 40-hour-a-fortnight cap lift in sectors affected by the pandemic. The Federal government has agreed to a proposal to increase the 40-hour a fortnight cap for foreign students while they are studying, with it likely to be doubled to 80 hours a fortnight or 40 hours a week, said the report.

Please note that online learning will stay forever now. The new normal will very certainly be a hybrid model, in which traditional offline teaching and e-learning coexist. It is difficult to deny that hybrid learning has a bright future. Hybrid learning effectively combines the benefits of personalisation and convenience to provide a learning environment that is best adapted to meet students’ changing demands in today’s world.
