n education, we often find ourselves seeking a guiding light, someone who not only imparts knowledge but also illuminates the path to a brighter future. The K12 Digest’s latest issue is a tribute to those Visionary Leaders who have been reshaping K-12 education in 2023, paving the way for a generation of learners who are more equipped, more inclusive, and more creative in their thinking. Within these pages, we uncover stories of inspiration, ideas, and a blueprint for what the future of education could look like. At the heart of our exploration lies an exploration of the Factors influencing Successful Education Management. Trust, reliability, dependence, commitment, and leadership – these factors form the bedrock upon which institutions stand or crumble. The trust between educators, students, and parents is the cornerstone of any thriving educational institution. It’s that belief that the journey embarked upon will be fruitful, that the effort invested will yield results, and that every voice matters in the quest for knowledge. Reliability, too, is a vital factor. In an age of rapid change, we seek institutions that stand as beacons of consistency, where quality education is not a transient promise but a lasting commitment. Dependence, not in the sense of reliance but in the nurturing of interdependence, is what truly sustains the growth of any educational community. In the synergy of collaboration and support, we find the strength to weather challenges and emerge stronger. Commitment is the unwavering dedication of educators and leaders to the cause of education. It’s the tireless pursuit of excellence, a commitment that transcends the boundaries of time and circumstance. And finally, leadership – the driving force behind it all. The cover story of this issue features Dr. Hugh McCormick, the Founder and Headteacher of Copperfield International School. He exemplifies not only an educator but a storyteller, a mentor, and a wellspring of inspiration. His journey is a testament to how visionary leadership can shape the destiny of an institution. So, as you flip through the pages of this issue, I encourage you to consider the transformative power of trust, reliability, dependence, commitment, and leadership. In understanding these factors, we uncover the secret of what it takes to build a truly successful school - one that not only imparts knowledge but inspires lifelong learners and future leaders. Enjoy Reading.

estled in the idyllic village of Verbier, Switzerland, where the majestic Alps greet the sky, a tale of transformation unfolds. Dr. Hugh McCormick, the Founder and Headteacher of Copperfield International School, is not just an educator;

14

he’s a storyteller, a mentor, and a wellspring of inspiration. Born into a family where learning and empathy flowed like a gentle stream, it’s no wonder Dr. McCormick found his calling in teaching. His father, a Professor of Economics, and his mother, a Child Psychologist, cultivated an environment where helping others and unraveling

the mysteries of the world were daily pursuits. “Our family culture was about helping people and explaining things, and these two paths just merged for me into teaching,” says Dr. McCormick. Before Copperfield, Dr. McCormick’s journey through academia led him to the University of Oxford, where he earned an MPhil and DPhil

in Political Philosophy. But the siren calls of investment banking briefly lured him away, with positions at Macquarie and UBS. Yet, the allure of finance couldn’t eclipse his true passion education. With this conviction, he transitioned to teaching, bringing his passion for knowledge and an unshakeable belief in each student’s potential

to top British schools. In 2022, Dr. McCormick earned a Master’s in Educational Leadership and School Improvement, with Distinction, from the University of Cambridge. This was a pivotal moment, equipping him with the knowledge to shape the future of education. Then, amidst a world-changing pandemic, an extraordinary opportunity beckoned - the chance to turn his dream into reality. Captivated by Verbier’s serene beauty and boundless potential, he founded Copperfield International School. “Why Verbier? The mountains have an unmatched serenity, and I always thought they would be ideal for a school. In the pandemic, a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity arose to go after this ideal, so I took it!” says Dr. McCormick. At Copperfield, Dr. McCormick leads a team dedicated to providing an inspiring

character-based education to all students. The mission is clear: to nurture not only academic excellence but also the values and character traits that will mold future leaders and change-makers. Success, on one’s own terms, often transcends the boundaries of the classroom. It is rooted in the wisdom shared through aphorisms and the examples set by family members or mentors. Furthermore, it blossoms through the pursuit of passions, whatever they may be. The choice of one’s hobby significantly shapes the lessons learned. “I am ambitious for students in the classroom and - even more - for each student to learn to influence their own character. I believe this kind of work, albeit difficult, is feasible and high impact,” shares Dr. McCormick. In education, teachers often find themselves navigating the terrain sculpted by administrative decisions, often influenced by the complex landscape of staffing. Once such a culture is

entrenched, breaking free can be a formidable task. Dr. McCormick explains, “Starting off with a new faculty in a new school provided an opportunity to set a student-focused culture ab initio, and we do this by returning each time to ask what is best for the students. This can lead to surprising places for the adults involved, and consequently, decisions that require more explanation and patience.” Embarking on a Remarkable Educational Journey Creating a school in just months is no small feat, but for Dr. McCormick, it was an adventure filled with challenges. He reflects, “Starting a school is a community effort that touches every aspect of our small mountain community. When you’re new to the scene, you face hurdles, and it demands humility, open dialogue with the community, and personal growth. My biggest challenge? Well, my family was in the UK, and

the school was in Switzerland, so I traveled a lot during the pandemic.” Dr. McCormick’s vision for Copperfield is unique. He says, “Starting a new school allows us to build from scratch, embracing fresh ideas to keep our school vibrant. We work closely across departments to create innovative strategies that benefit everyone.” The school’s strong partnership with the Verbier community is evident through events such as the annual student-parent ski race, which inclusively engages residents of Verbier. Notably, Copperfield had the privilege of hosting Chelsea Football Club for a special training weekend last year, which achieved remarkable success. “We shall be opening this event to the other schools here in Verbier to share this amazing opportunity with other children,” adds Dr. McCormick. With an international faculty and a diverse student body, Copperfield International School

takes pride in embracing a vast array of literature spanning different cultures and historical epochs. Dr. Hugh McCormick shares, “This approach is instrumental in educating our students about the richness and diversity of celebrated religions, traditions, and global events. To facilitate this, we invite authors, filmmakers, and subject-matter experts who share their insights through talks and workshops.” Moreover, the school urges students to create multimedia presentations, podcasts, and short films directly tied to the curriculum. This approach ensures that students not only acquire knowledge but also engage with it in a profound and creative manner. Exploring Wisdom, Courage, and Trust in Leadership Dr. McCormick loves exploring ideas with his colleagues, watching brilliant films and reading literature. He says, “Aside from the obvious

Charles Dickens, I am a big fan of epic novels and cinema - Tolstoy being my favorite. His key message is that wisdom comes through suffering; in my experience, this has certainly been so.” Dr. McCormick also enjoys a challenge of any nature, whether a Spartan Race or skiing Verbier’s most demanding pistes. These experiences have instilled in him the values of courage and unwavering focus. “In the face of many sporting challenges, there’s a moment of fear and trepidation at the starting line. However, this fear quickly

transforms into a laser-like focus on the task at hand and the actionable steps required to overcome it,” opines Dr. McCormick. This aspect of sports mirrors leadership in the sense that influential leaders concentrate on what can be done in the present and the immediate future rather than dwelling on past mistakes or dwelling

20

K12 Digest October 2023

on the seemingly impossible. Dr. McCormick asserts that it takes tremendous courage to adopt this perspective and lead with determination. Another pivotal lesson from these challenges, according to Dr. McCormick, is the critical role of trust in leadership. In sports and leadership alike, trust is the bedrock upon which effective teamwork

and progress are built. “As a leader, fostering an environment where your team understands that you trust them and that your support is readily available if needed is paramount. When trust is firmly established, it becomes possible for everyone to march together in a sustained and unified manner, heading in the right direction. Many leaders may set the course, but without trust, they’ll find themselves navigating it alone,” emphasizes Dr. McCormick. In a nutshell, Dr. McCormick believes that these physical challenges have taught him that leadership is not only about setting the direction but also about having the courage to focus on the present, build trust, and inspire a team to journey together toward a common goal. A Multifaceted Journey in Education and Finance Dr. McCormick’s educational journey traverses a diverse array of disciplines, including Politics, Philosophy, Economics, and Political Philosophy, all of which have significantly contributed to his leadership in the field of education. He elaborates, “Politics, Philosophy, and Economics (PPE) studies foster a versatile and transferrable skill set, particularly emphasizing critical thinking and analysis. PPE graduates often possess a reputation for assertiveness. This might be because they develop robust analytical skills early in their professional journey, and at that stage, they may lack the extensive experience that would temper their analytical inclinations.” For Dr. McCormick, this academic background proved invaluable in navigating the complexities of launching a school, covering areas such as education, regulation, governance, and

business. Furthermore, reflecting on the experiences of PPE graduates has helped him cultivate humility. On the flip side, drawing from his experiences as an investment banker, Dr. McCormick highlights, “In the realm of finance, when performance is at its zenith, investment bankers allocate capital judiciously, directing it where it can yield productivity while preventing it from going to less fruitful ventures.” Dr. McCormick, during his time in finance, recognized the responsibility of investing pensioners’ funds and, consequently, prioritized ethical and sustainable investment practices. His tenure at Macquarie, known for its commitment to ethical and sustainable finance, allowed him to collaborate with exceptional colleagues. “Some bankers do not perform well, and when money is put to unproductive uses, a lot of negative feeling is generated. Whereas bankers allocate wealth on behalf of older generations, teachers perform an analogous function, allocating knowledge to and on behalf of younger and future generations.” Dr. McCormick has also completed a Master’s in Educational Leadership and School Improvement, which is commendable. In fact, he had applied for this Master’s program before founding the school without expecting to be accepted. Dr. McCormick recalls, “When the acceptance letter from Cambridge arrived, I faced a significant decision! Perhaps the most valuable lessons it taught me were related to multi-tasking and acceptance.” Balancing the demands of graduate studies while simultaneously launching the school necessitated careful triage, acknowledging

that he couldn’t do everything. This challenge led to an enhancement of his delegation skills, an area where many leaders often encounter difficulties. “I had no alternative but to delegate, and this decision unlocked the potential of those around me to a far greater extent than if I had attempted to do it all,” adds Dr. McCormick.

22

K12 Digest October 2023

Nurturing Excellence in Education Copperfield International School’s motto, ‘Have the courage to be imperfect,’ encapsulates its ethos. “Our is to ensure that students experience happiness during their time at school while understanding that there is always room for learning, improvement, and deriving lessons from imperfect moments,” states Dr. McCormick. The school recognizes the significance of good grades, which can open doors to future opportunities. However, it also places great value on creating an environment where students feel supported by both their teachers and peers, fostering personal growth beyond academic achievements. This holistic approach to education aims to nurture young adults who can thrive in various aspects of life. In line with its commitment to providing an exceptional learning environment, Copperfield International School has embarked on a three-year development plan to enhance its facilities in Verbier. Recognizing the importance of high-quality spaces in optimizing the learning experience, the school recently refurbished its primary classrooms over the summer. These renovations have resulted in more open and brighter classroom spaces equipped with floor-to-ceiling writable walls, smart TVs, and iPads in each room. “Space has a big impact on learning, and this has been key for us from the start,” pinpoints Dr. McCormick. Copperfield International School’s unwavering commitment to delivering exceptional education is evident in the remarkable advancements they have made. These enhancements are a clear indication of the school’s dedication to providing top-tier education to its students.

Embracing the Transformative Power of AI in Education Ricardo Jiménez, COO & Head of Product, Arukay

I

n the ever-evolving digital landscape, artificial intelligence (AI) has emerged as a groundbreaking technology with the potential to reshape various aspects of our lives. Education, in particular, stands to benefit greatly from the integration of AI. Instead of fearing the rise of AI, the education system should embrace it, recognizing the immense opportunities it brings. This article explores how AI is changing education and highlights the need for educators to adapt to this new era. 1. Embracing AI to Stay Ahead: The rapid advancement of AI has brought about significant transformations in various industries, revolutionizing the way we live and work. To ensure that our education system remains relevant and prepares students for the future, it is imperative that we embrace AI and integrate it into our curriculum effectively.

To ensure that our education system remains relevant and prepares students for the future, it is imperative that we embrace AI and integrate it into our curriculum effectively

26

K12 Digest October 2023

By embracing AI in education, we can equip students with the necessary skills and knowledge to thrive in an AI-driven world. This means providing them with opportunities to learn about AI concepts, algorithms, and applications, as well as fostering critical thinking, problem-solving, and creativity. In an AI-driven world, individuals who possess the ability to harness the power of AI will have a competitive advantage. They will be equipped to analyze vast amounts of data, automate tasks, and make informed decisions based on insights derived from AI algorithms. These skills will be highly sought after in the job market, as organizations across industries increasingly adopt AI technologies to streamline processes and drive innovation.

According to a recent report by PwC[ PwC. (2018). The impact of automation on jobs. Retrieved June 6, 2023, the adoption of AI is expected to have a significant impact on the job market. It is estimated that by the early 2030s, around 38% of jobs in the United States could be at high risk of automation. This underscores the urgency of preparing the next generation for the job market of the future. 2. Fostering Critical Thinking and Creativity: Rather than viewing AI as a threat to traditional education, it should be seen as a tool to enhance learning outcomes. By shifting the education system’s focus towards nurturing critical thinking and creativity, students can be encouraged to leverage AI technology effectively to address intricate problems and overcome real-world challenges. One good example of how AI is being implemented in education is AlphaFold, an advanced AI system that accurately predicts 3D models of protein structures[ DeepMind. AlphaFold. Retrieved June 6, 2023, University teachers are harnessing the power of AlphaFold2 to introduce students to the potential of artificial intelligence in understanding structural biology, providing them with a firsthand experience of how AI can revolutionize scientific research and discovery[ DeepMind. (2022, January 25). AlphaFold: A Solution to a 50-YearOld Grand Challenge in Biology. By incorporating AI tools like AlphaFold into the learning process, students can develop

a deeper understanding of complex subjects and gain practical skills that are highly valuable in the modern world. 3. Flipping the Classroom with AI: One of the most effective ways to integrate AI into the classroom is by flipping the traditional teaching model. Instead of teachers providing step-by-step instructions on problem-solving, students can leverage AI to find solutions on their own. This approach empowers students to actively engage with the subject matter, develop problemsolving skills, and build confidence in their abilities. Moreover, this method enables students to share their unique approaches with the class, promoting collaboration and diverse perspectives. As mentioned by Josep Valor-Sabatier, Professor of Management of Information Systems Technologies at IESE University of Barcelona, “What you can’t do is ask students to write about quantum mechanics as homework. What you have to do is the other way around. Ask them to go home and find out what quantum mechanics is. Then, come to class, and I will randomly choose four or five students to present it[ CNN. (2022, May 31). CNN en Español - Profesor pone a prueba el ChatGPT y cree que podría ser una herramienta escolar. 4. Empowering Educators with AI Tools: AI not only benefits students but also has the potential to greatly assist educators in their daily tasks. Numerous AI-powered tools are available to help teachers streamline

administrative duties, create personalized assessments, and enhance communication with parents. These tools can significantly reduce the time and effort required for administrative tasks, allowing teachers to focus more on student engagement and personalized instruction. As mentioned in the research conducted by HoloIQ titled “Understanding Generative AI in Higher Education,[ HolonIQ (2023, Feb 02)..Artificial Intelligence in Education. 2023 Survey Insights (holoniq.com) https://www. holoniq.com/notes/artificial-intelligencein-education-2023-survey-insights ]” AI is already adding value in multiple ways to the education ecosystem. Conclusion: As AI continues to advance at an astonishing pace, the education system must adapt to leverage its transformative potential. Embracing AI in education does not mean replacing teachers; rather, it means empowering educators and students to excel in an AI-driven world. By embracing AI and fostering critical thinking, creativity, and collaboration, the education system can equip students with the skills necessary for success in the digital age. Moreover, by utilizing AI tools, teachers can streamline administrative tasks and focus on what they do best: inspiring and guiding students towards a brighter future. The integration of AI in education holds immense promise, and it is up to us to harness its power for the betterment of education and society as a whole.

Scanlan notes, “Our students recognize that they are not just individuals but vital contributors to the global society. They cultivate a sense of solidarity, understanding that the well-being of each individual is a collective responsibility.” This responsibility transcends borders and extends to the betterment of society. Blue Valley students find personal happiness in striving for positive societal change, embodying the belief that being exemplary citizens is their most profound contribution to both their country and the world. With profound respect for the environment, they demonstrate their appreciation for the interconnectedness of the world and its well-being. A Multifaceted Educational Journey The foundation of Blue Valley School’s educational excellence was built from the earliest years. Starting in the Early Learning School (ELS), the institution implements a pedagogical blend inspired by Montessori and Reggio Emilia methodologies. Principal Kathryn Scanlan emphasizes the significance of this approach: “We recognize that a child’s formative years lay the groundwork for lifelong learning. Our Inspired Approach to Early Learning fosters language acquisition, literacy, mathematical thinking, and socio-constructivist learning, all within a nurturing environment.” Elementary education at Blue Valley is a dynamic amalgamation of American and Costa Rican influences. and history, promoting open-mindedness and cultural awareness. In the Middle School years (grades six to eight), students further expand their horizons. “We provide a well-rounded education,” Scanlan explains. “This includes U.S. language arts, World History and Geography, and a curriculum rooted in Costa Rican values. Our Math and Science programs follow a Pre-IB International curriculum, ensuring academic excellence while meeting local standards.” Blue Valley students begin accumulating credits for graduation as early as ninth grade. The institution offers three distinct pathways, each tailored to the individual: 1. National Baccalaureate (NB): Achieved by fulfilling government requirements at the end of 11th grade. 2. High School Diploma: Attained by meeting Blue Valley’s criteria at the end of twelfth grade. 3. International Baccalaureate (IB): A prestigious option that commences in 11th grade, culminating in external examinations in 12th grade. Scanlan adds, “The IB program challenges our students to excel on a global stage, nurturing well-rounded, internationally-minded individuals.” Transition events are a cornerstone of Blue Valley’s commitment to students and parents. Throughout the year, these events guide families as they prepare for the next educational milestones. Scanlan highlights the importance of these occasions: “We understand the significance of each transition, from ELS to

Redefining School-Readiness: A Post-COVID Stance Katari Coleman, PhD, Senior Project Director, Education Development Center, Inc.

efore the COVID pandemic of 2020, the civil unrest in response to police shootings of unarmed individuals, and an upsurge in school shootings across the country, schoolreadiness focused on academics, with attention to literacy and math skills. From kindergarten to 12th grade, summer reading lists and prescribed educational experiences were dispensed during the last week of school in the name of schoolreadiness. There was a subtle emphasis on social

and emotional skills, especially for soon-to-be kindergarteners, and expectations regarding classroom behavior for all grades that students were expected to reflect. The expectation was for students to embody age-appropriate adaptive skills. With the trauma caused by the pandemic, shootings, and other societal ills, the meaning of school-readiness has been forever altered in my mind. K-12 public and private institutions were charged with responding to public health

From 2020-2022, there were 664 shooting incidents on school properties. Students are now highly mindful of the possibilities of these shooting events and the expectation to activate “active shooter” protocols when there is a threat 42

concerns and attending to strenuous COVID protocols to reduce the risk of harm to students, teachers, and community members. These were relatively rigid throughout the first year of the pandemic and still have importance for schools as the years have brought a loosening in restrictions. One would assume that the pandemic’s halting of in-person attendance was the only concern for

students’ concerns for participation and normalcy. Still, from 2020-2022 there were 664 shooting incidents on school properties. Students are now highly mindful of the possibilities of these shooting events and the expectation to activate “active shooter” protocols when there is a threat. Given the fear of COVID-related sickness and gun-related violence to which students are expected to acclimate, this raises the question: are children mentally ready for school? Mental wellness is an internal human resource that helps us think, feel, connect, and function; it is an active process that allows us to build resilience, grow, and flourish. School-readiness is affected by mental wellness, as the unfortunate stress- and trauma-related realities are adversely impactful. As a result, school-readiness today requires a complex and multi-aspect readiness that forces students to be academically, socially, and emotionally ready, including COVID-related health and increased mental health wellness preparedness. Health readiness today may mean providing proof of COVID-related vaccinations, intervals of COVID tests for school entry, identifying symptoms that were once thought to be a simple and harmless cold, and the ability to shift into COVID protocol if there is an infected individual detected on the school campus and locations that host school events. Now more than ever, youth and others should receive regular medical preventive care, maintain a healthy diet, and exercise appropriately to be as strong as possible. The impact on mental health in youth has been the most alarming. Plainly put, students are scared. In Vedika Jawa’s 2021 article in the Atlantic, I’m Not Afraid of COVID-19. I’m Afraid of School Shootings, Vedika expresses

that his excitement of returning to school was overcome by fear. Parents also share this fear, opting for online education as a permanent option, while other parents may not be able to do this and must send their children to school. Fear of illness, violence, and death can stimulate the nervous system in potentially unhealthy ways. It is also strongly associated with mood disorders such as anxiety and depression and may, in some cases, trigger or reinforce certain mental health conditions and negatively affect school-readiness. Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs corroborates these impacts, conveying the need for humans to have their physiological and safety needs met before they can progress to psychological, and selffulfillment needs like self-actualization in school. So, what can schools and policymakers do to get students post-COVID school-ready? First, one must acknowledge that teachers play a significant role in preparing and motivating students during the school day, so they need support and consideration. A 2021 RAND survey found that nearly one-quarter of teachers desired to leave their jobs at the end of the school year, compared with an average national turnover rate of 16% pre-pandemic, according to NCES data. Stress is the culprit due to the same factors students deal with post-COVID. Teachers need similar mental health and physical wellness reinforcements to sustain their ability to teach; supports like up-to-date technology to ease remote instruction when schools need to close, peer-learning communities that provide space for teachers to share, adequate compensation and rewards for their challenging work; practical protocols that lower the risk of COVID and other virus infections, and reassurance that school security is diligent are

all potential avenues for success. Two areas are highlighted in the following sections. School and classroom approach – The focus must support equitable and effective teaching and learning. This means schools must refashion themselves around tenets of equity, authentic learning, and relationships. The Learning Policy Institute published Restarting and Reinventing School: Learning in the Time of COVID and Beyond, which provides ten key areas that policymakers and schools should address. Despite the COVID slide, which focuses on the academic erosion children endured, four areas seem extremely important to the child’s development and doable for school administrators and teachers. These are: “assess what students need; ensure supports for SEL [social and emotional learning]; redesign schools for stronger relationships; and emphasize authentic, culturally responsive learning.” Schools must be willing to carve out time in their daily schedules to dialogue with students, learn about the students, families, and the community to impact classroom activities and expectations, and infuse SEL activities and resources. Students require their learning needs to be met seamlessly despite the environment, with adequate interaction and some self-selected, highly engaging activities reflecting their developmental age, stage, culture, and community. SEL must be considered a factor in all activities, not a five-minute add-on at the beginning and end of the day. Fundamentally, students who feel safe, respected, and believe that they belong are more motivated and successful in academic environments and more prepared for the next stage of school. Out-of-School Time (OST) programs – Once students leave the school building, whether

once classes are done for the day or when the academic year ends, students need to access support and engagement from communitybased programming. For working parents whose schedules do not align with their school-age child’s, these programs can be instrumental in fostering school-readiness. These programs close the achievement gap by providing time for deeper learning, address mental health by connecting youth with mentors trained to help with relationship building and healing from trauma, and ensure their safety while not being supervised by their parents/caregivers. However, according to Afterschool Alliance’s America

46

K12 Digest October 2023

After 3PM report, there is an unmet demand for afterschool and summer programs, especially in marginalized communities. In closing, school-readiness today requires a complex and multi-aspect willingness that forces students to have a greater level of physical health and mental health preparedness. While schools must reconfigure curriculum and activities to include SEL and mental health supports and strengthen safety and health-related protocols, OST program accessibility must be increased. Beyond what happens in the home, these are critical elements to develop and maintain a school-ready student today.

ESSER Grants are Ending . . . What’s Next For Evidence-Base d Tutoring? John Failla, CEO & Founder, Pearl

A

midst the national education crisis, tutoring has experienced a remarkable surge thanks to a generous influx of Elementary and Secondary School Emergency Relief (ESSER) dollars. It has fueled innovative approaches to tutoring that are yielding promising results. Yet, the horizon presents a pressing question: what happens when these “ESSER cliffs” hit and the funding takes a nosedive? Having personally seen the impact of quality tutoring, as a mentee, a mentor and the founder of the first research-based tutoring platform, Pearl, I know that tutoring done right mitigates learning loss and isn’t going to be abandoned. Established in 1964, the Federal Work Study (FWS) program has been updated for today’s higher-education stakeholders with encouraging language around tutoring programs. The benefits to the FWS programs may do for tutoring far beyond what ESSER grants delivered. Here’s why:

100% of Federal Dollars for Tutoring Each year, the Work-Study program pumps billions of dollars into providing part-time employment to help students finance the costs of postsecondary education. Remarkably, a mandated 7% of this vast pool is dedicated to community service efforts, a portion that is set to more than double to 15% in the next two years.

FWS funds typically only cover 75% of wages with the remaining 25% covered by the University. The federal share of compensation paid to university students employed as reading or mathematics tutors for children is 100%, as documented in the school’s accounting records. programs the financial means to focus grant funding on much needed administrative improvements, expanded implementation, and critical research. Public- Private Partnerships The Biden administration has urged higher education institutions to allocate these funds towards tutoring programs, envisioning a powerful tool to bolster academic achievement nationwide. In alignment with this vision, the National Partnership for Student Success (NPSS) has been established as a rallying coalition for these community-focused initiatives. Tapping into Work-Study funds allows universities to mobilize their students, supplying tutoring services to K-12 schools at a fraction of the conventional cost. These programs not only infuse the educational landscape with resources but also foster profound community connections and a potentially sustainable talent pipeline from universities to schools. Tutoring as a Civic Duty This model represents an exciting avenue for the future of tutoring, offering an economically viable, research backed high-impact solution with a nod towards strengthening community bonds and fostering future generations of educators. This is an opportunity to reimagine tutoring not as a band-aid solution, but as an enduring civic pillar of our educational ecosystem. Tutoring Done Right = Relationships Perhaps one of the most impactful benefits of these university-K-12 district partnerships

stems from the relationships made and nurtured. Beyond increasing student learning and engagement, these tutors and students are closer in age to the K-12 students and inspire them to have a lasting relationship as mentor/mentee and even explore a career in higher-ed. Tutoring has been, and continues to be, a common approach to tackling learning loss. Federal data shows that 56% of K-12 schools reported using high-impact tutoring and 36% of schools reported using other forms. Some school leaders say they use multiple kinds of tutoring. The FWS program provides higher education institutions with an unprecedented opportunity to ensure that K-12 students continue to have access to these essential learning services and relationships by expanding programs that place university students as tutors. And when students have access to advanced learning opportunities and can build relationships with those who can help them better understand their postsecondary options, the positive impacts – academic, social, economic, and more – cut across generations. The toolbox to prevent learning loss is filled with meaningful resources. Combining federal dollars, philanthropy, and publicprivate partnerships with high-impact tutoring programs will create meaningful learning environments and lasting relationships that will empower students for generations to come. As ESSER grants come to an end, develop a plan to work with local universities and higher-education institutions in your community to implement and embrace FWS and everything it has to offer.

What lies ahead for education and AI integration?” These are common questions that arise when we think about the future of education as new AI technology comes to light. Instead of succumbing to fear, as educators, we must embrace curiosity and teach students how to utilize AI as a tool for learning rather than a replacement. We possess a rare chance to wholeheartedly embrace AI and foster curiosity in our students, empowering them to harness this transformative technology in remarkable ways. From my own experience tutoring at Hello Edu during the growing popularity of AI, I have witnessed the extreme interest students have in discovering new ways to utilize these tools. The majority of students I work with have ChatGPT banned on their schoolissued laptops, as well as being told by teachers to not use AI

for schoolwork. By having AI be “forbidden” it generates even more interest in students to want to use it, and they may not have the proper guidance if it is treated like something negative in relation to learning. I often tell my students that it’s like “a calculator, but for words!” This mindset helps us use it in a way that adds value to our learning and treats it like any other educational resource. I have found that ChatGPT enhances the learning experience, positioning itself as a collaborative partner that enriches education in ways, we never thought possible. By blending our own minds with the structured support of AI, we have the exciting opportunity to cocreate mesmerizing worlds and captivating characters for vibrant comic books, stories, and writing prompts. These imaginative ventures foster a sense of wonder and curiosity in our students, encouraging their unique expressions and creating learning activities curated to their special interests. In our tutoring lessons, AI became an ally in our pursuit of knowledge. We have the ability to create personalized lesson plans that incorporate students’ interests like Stranger Things, Giant Squids, or even their favorite musical artist. This approach transformed learning into an immersive experience, generating endless ideas for interactive activities and games to make even the most challenging topics engaging. The technology, coupled with the relationship between student and educator fosters active participation and deepens the connection between the material and the student’s personal experiences. This collaborative partnership between AI and our tutoring sessions sparked curiosity and empowers our students to embrace learning with enthusiasm.

I’ve discovered an exciting way to engage pre-K students in writing short stories tailored to their experiences and interests. By incorporating their names, personal challenges they have overcome, and even their beloved pets and hobbies into the stories, we create a captivating narrative that speaks directly to their hearts. These special touches foster a strong sense of connection and engagement, while also serving as a powerful tool for students with ADHD, helping them stay focused and actively involved during storytime. Through the harmonious integration of AI and personalization, we create an immersive storytelling experience that sparks imagination and ignites a lifelong love for reading and learning in our young learners. I believe that it is crucial to embrace the potential of AI and ChatGPT rather than succumb to apprehension or fear. Educators can champion AI as an electrifying force that amplifies human potential, viewing it as a potent ally instead of a threat to our roles. By talking about the proper use of AI tools with our students we can foster an environment where students navigate the ever-evolving landscape of education with confidence, adaptability, and an insatiable thirst for lifelong learning. As we explore these uncharted territories, we need to remember that we have hardly scratched the surface of using these tools. The realm of AI holds countless untapped possibilities, eagerly awaiting the creative minds of educators and students to unlock its true potential.
