I am a designer with both business and design backgrounds. With 4 years working experience in international trading and 3 years in product development and design, I understand the design principles, production process, project cost accountability and other financial concepts. I frequently collaborate closely with crossfunctional teams inside and external partners to create greater alignment and integration. It is essential for me to thrive on the challenge of providing innovative solutions and higher value to the clients. In addition to sell-fulfillment, I believe the power of teamwork. I enjoy being a team player and a leader. Taiwan is the place I grew up, and I am also an U.S. permanent residenct. In the past few years, I had worked in China and studied in the United Kingdom. Living in the different countries allows me to understand other cultures and to be open-minded.

The Meat Chair Introduction
This was a design workshop led by the world-famous designer, Maarten Baas. Students from different countries gathered in France to design a dining chair in 5 days.
What else can a chair be?
Although 'a dining chair' seems to be a practical design project, I decided to take it as an interactive ‘narrative product’ imbued with meaning and messages. By challenging the expectations and conventions of existing products, alternative directions and product opportunities are possible.

Like most of the design projects, this chair was accomplished with limited resources. The workshop was held in the countryside, and the designers were given 5 days to brainstorm and finish the models. In this case, the best places to look din for inspiration and materials were ing the nature, the ranches, and the garbage dump.

People lose track of the food sources after industrialization affects the food industry. Many children don’t recognize vegetables or animals before they are processed by supermarkets or restaurants. The alienative relationship between food and people may cause unhealthy diet and waste of food. The intention of this dining chair design is to bring people closer to food materials in order to remind them of what they are eating and to be grateful to the nature.

After coming back to Taiwan from France, the media were interested in my design and the experience in the workshop. One of the journalists from "Business Week" magazine interviewed me and published a three-page article about the meat chair and how we worked with Maarten Baas.

O'melody Introduction Learning to pour water is a difficult task for most of children at their age of three. The aims of this project are : - to help children develop better motor coordination - to create pleasant learning experience of pouring water - to design a children's product which is presentable when it is not being used The Italian brand Alessi is assumed to be the client for this project. The marketing research and the design direction are tailored for Alessi’s target customers.

Why Water? 1. water is vital for human body. 2. Water is one of basic row materials for purposeful play (Crosser, 2005). 3. Playing can provide opportunities for independent learning and building confidence, resilience, self-esteem and self-efficacy’ (Mollie et al., 2008).

O'melody Marketing Alessi is the assumed client in this project. The personality and the details of this product are specifically designed for Alessi’s value and brand image. The product possesses two features of Alessi, fun and sculptural. It has the fun factors for children and adults’ aesthetics for parents, therefore it can be display on the shelves instead of being hiding in the corner like other toys.

Idea Generation
cup set design for children
Ideas cover from a set of toys, a single product to an attached device for existing products. All of them meet the requirement of combining pouring water with playing music and provide additional values when it is not being used. The ideas are narrowed down based on the fun factors, market, cost, and practicability. In the end, the final design is a cup with waterwheel in it, and it makes music as the waterwheel spins.

O'melody Experiment Experiments bring the ideas drawn on paper to live. It also sparkles unexpected ideas by playing with materials. Different kinds of containers and water inventions were used to try all the possibilities and to see the relationship between the prototypes and a child manikin. In functional aspect, resistance from the waterwheel and sound effect are two major issues that need to be tested.

Leverage Test
These experiments were to attach the cylinder to waterwheels and see how long the paddles need to be to turn the cylinder. It was found that the minimal size of the wheel should be 7cm in diameter.
Sound Test To find the best sound effect, a music box was played in different conditions such as on a piece of wood, in a tin box and attached with a metal horn.

O'melody Final Design
The final design is a cup set for children to use at home when they are thirsty or when they want to play. There are a musical cup, a small jug, and a wood tray in the set. The waterwheel makes music when water is poured in, and then children drink from the straw.

Star Light Directive Light LED technology is widely applied in our lives, but the feature of directive light has been a problem. Directive light is too harsh to eyes, and the emitted angle is limited. To solve the problem, Xcellent design team works with a technology company to develop a “light guide. The light guide is a piece of acrylic with pattern on it to reflect the beam to where it is designed. LED chips in a bulb can be seen as the power sun, and the light guide is equal to the moon or the star that reflect gentle light.

Star Light Modular
This is a project for commercial space, for instance, in the reception of an office and in a cafĂŠ. To adapt to different space, 6 light bulbs were designed in a module. It is very easy to add on or take off each module by manufacturers. The same module can be used for pendent, floor, and table lamp.

modulized design for flexible space
Modular design makes it easy to alter the number of layers according to the space. The dumbbell part connects two different layers and keeps lower layer 30 degrees off from the upper one.
Minimum material is used to support the bulbs. Six identical pieces share a single mold to keep cost down. Mechanism was designed to simplifly assembling process and allow users to repair bulbs effortlessly.

Star Light Work with Engineers
Once the styling was finished, it was time to work closely with electrical engineers and mechanical engineers. The challenging task for the electrical engineers was the flexible modules with different numbers of LED chips. After a great deal of discussion between the design and mechanical team, the wire arrangement, assembling methods, thermo problems, and manufacture processes were settled efficiently because of team work.

Work with Marketing Team The designers assisted the marketing department with sourcing and promotion. The cooperation made sure that all the parts not only met the budget but also matched with the design. Furthermore, the design team attended lighting trade shows to introduce the design concepts and to obtain feedbacks from potential customers.
