Surgery Spotlight Meet Rosie: Shepherd Mix From the Desk of: Anthony Acquaviva VMD, DACVS

Physical exam findings:

Presenting signs:

Difficulty walking in her hind end.

History:

Rosie was referred to VCA Shoreline surgery service for severe difficultly walking in her back end. Signs started three weeks prior when Rosie stopped using her right rear leg. She was evaluated by her primary veterinarian, who presumptively diagnosed an Anterior Cruciate Ligament (ACL) tear, and prescribed pain medication. Rosie initially improved and started using the right hind leg; however, one week later she stopped using her left hind leg. At the time of referral, Rosie was having a hard time getting up and walking. She was otherwise healthy with a normal appetite, no coughing, sneezing, vomiting, or diarrhea, and had no past pertinent medical history.

On physical exam, Rosie had a severe lameness in both hind legs, with the left leg being more severe than the right. She had difficulty walking on slippery surfaces and required support to stand up. On orthopedic exam, Rosie had abnormal joint motion, an audible clicking sound, and excessive fluid in both knees. The rest of the orthopedic exam was unremarkable, and a complete neurologic exam was normal.

Assessment: • Bilateral complete cranial cruciate ligament (CCL) ruptures +/- meniscal injuries. This meant that Rosie tore both her right and left CCL The CCL is also known as the anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) in dogs. Treatment:

• Bilateral staged Tibial Plateau Leveling Osteotomies (TPLOs).

Outcome:

Rosie had her left knee operated first since she was lamer on the left leg. The right knee was operated 8 weeks later, following recovery from the first surgery. Prior to surgery, Rosie’s bloodwork was normal. Pre-surgical X-rays were performed to measure the bones and joint for the TPLO surgical procedure Radiographs before surgery also showed arthritis which is consistent with ACL disease. At surgery, the torn ACL was removed. A large meniscal tear was found during surgery. The torn portion of the meniscus was removed. Tibial Plateau Leveling Osteotomies were performed without issue Postoperative X-rays showed good implant placement and surgical repair Rosie went on to complete recovery (See post-operative radiographs). Five months after the first surgery, Rosie was running, jumping, and playing without any signs or lameness.

Connecting Through Our Dogs As we embark on the season of gathering, sharing and connecting, we invite our dogs to join in on the fun. Both dogs and people thrive on a sense of community and belonging. Whether your dog is energetic, enthusiastic, shy or low key, getting outside and participating in activities during these cooler months has many benefits for you and your dog. These benefits include overall health, wellness and one of the biggest is strengthening your connection to each other. You will find staying active with your dog has physical benefits for you and also helps to support your energy, mindfulness and staying present throughout your day. Your dog will be engaged physically which helps to meet their energy needs and decrease unwanted behaviors. Army’s Legacy Animal Rescue & Sanctuary has been busy. Here are some of their highlights of recent rescue missions: They transferred a beautiful girl named Nakia that was found abandoned in a field in New Haven emaciated. They transferred in a beautiful girl that was neglected, emaciated and pretty much rotting as her body was cut by wire leashing left tied around her. With the help and support of their village they were able to raise the funds to help her as soon as they took custody of her and they are continuing her care as she has a long journey ahead of her.

Lola and her babies

They recently joined forces with another rescue to save a pregnant dog that was in the Harwinton shelter. Lola had 14 beautiful puppies all healthy.

Desmond’s Army Written by: Adria Henderson

O

n any given day, at courthouses across Connecticut, it’s not unusual to see a group of purple-shirted individuals gathered on courthouse steps. They’ve come together to speak for the voiceless; to raise awareness of the plight of Connecticut’s abused animals, the innocent victims of animal abusers. They are Desmond’s Army. This is their story. In 2012, 22-year-old Alex Wullaert was arrested for savagely murdering his girlfriend’s dog, Desmond. Wullaert had become increasingly violent toward her and, fearing for her safety - and Desmond’s - she left with her dog. Unable to find housing with Desmond, a large, pit-boxer mix, she reluctantly surrendered him to a local shelter. Wullaert enraged, tracked Desmond to the shelter. Convincing the shelter staff he was the dog’s owner, he brought Desmond home. Desmond’s mutilated body was discovered by a passerby in a trash bag in the Branford woods. Desmond had been strangled, his body was covered in bruises, he was malnourished, and several of his teeth were broken. As a final insult to this innocent dog, his abuser, Alex Wullaert qualified for the court’s diversionary program. If completed, Wullaert’s criminal record would be removed; he could return home to repeat acts of violence against another animal, and, as studies have shown, move on to violence against humans. This was not a victimless crime. Desmond was the victim of this horrific murder, but no one was in court to speak for him, to describe the horror he endured or the number of times Wullaert, without provocation, viciously attacked him or refused to feed him. After hearing the outcome of the case, Desmond’s shelter caretaker was so outraged she vowed to find a way to raise public awareness about the endless cycle of dismissed charges and diversionary programs for animal abusers in Connecticut. Forming a group of equally outraged people and calling themselves “Justice for Desmond” they set out on a quest to stop the court’s apathetic approach to animal abuse cases. Over the next few years, as these cases continued to be dismissed by the courts, the group became disheartened. But when several shockingly inhumane cruelty cases surfaced, including two dogs in Bristol that were found hanging from a tree, the group became reenergized and, once again, began appearing in courts across Connecticut. This time the media took notice 12 • Winter 2023 | Connecticut Dog

and began covering the group’s movements, referring to them as an “army.” The name stuck. They had become Desmond’s Army. One of the group’s founders, Robin “Zilla” Cannamela, believing that legislation could be the solution to the court’s cycle of silence, reached out to Diana S. Urban, a well-known animal advocate and, at the time, a Connecticut state representative. Teaming up with Jessica Rubin, a law professor at the University of Connecticut, they crafted a model bill known as “Desmond’s Law.” The law would allow court-appointed advocates to represent the interests of justice in animal cruelty cases. Abused animals would have their own representation and could now “voice” the torture and torment they endured. This groundbreaking legislation was passed by the Connecticut legislature, signed into law, and enacted on October 1, 2016. Since then, several states have crafted bills modeled after Desmond’s Law, including Maine, passing “Franky’s Law.”

The “Army” also provides reward funds for information leading to the identification of people responsible for cruelty to an animal. Walk by Faith Doggie Bakery & Cromwell Country Store

W

alk by Faith Doggie Bakery and Cromwell Country store is a destination for families with pets where you are greeted by a happy person with the smell of treats baking and a feeling like home where you can relax with your pup while you shop or just enjoy watching us rolling out the dough and baking them in a toasty oven. Step outside to the river park for your dog to enjoy during your visit. We started out with the goal of helping to bring about a positive change in the lives of pets and pet owners. By making simple and wholesome treats from scratch, something that pets love, also revealed the underlying happiness and joy that pet parents have with their pets. It’s a place where people can come in to chat or share stories about their dogs. Not only was it about the deep connection between people and pets, rather, through prayer and God’s will and guidance, it has been a walk of faith. Walk by Faith doggie treats are available at our shop in Cromwell and online store but they are also available in select retail stores throughout Connecticut. See our ad on page 23.

Keto Natural Pet Foods Despite record expenditures on veterinary care by their owners, America’s companion animals are arguably the least healthy animals on the planet. Not unlike their owners, they are experiencing epidemics of obesity, diabetes, cancer, and other chronic diseases all at once. At KetoNatural Pet Foods, we believe there’s a simple explanation for this unacceptable situation: a broken pet care industry. From deceptive regulations and bad science to unhealthy products and emotional manipulation, legacy pet care companies have worked hard to ensure that both pet owners and veterinarians lack the tools and knowledge they need to keep pets healthy and happy. At KetoNatural, we’re different. We believe that the best way to make pets healthier and happier is by educating and empowering their owners. That’s why we aspire to be the most honest, substantive, and progressive company in the history of the pet care industry. The status quo simply isn’t working, so we’re changing it. Ketona, our flagship line of dry dog food products, embodies our vision. As I explained in my book Dogs, Dog Food, and Dogma, the peer-reviewed record shows that dietary carbohydrates play a starring role in all of the metabolic diseases plaguing America’s pet populations. That’s why our Ketona recipes contain 80% less carbohydrate and 50% more protein than other “ultra-premium” dog foods. We hope you’ll visit www.ketonaturalpetfoods.com to learn more. Make a Charcuterie Board for Your Dog

Fun fact:

Some other popular names for a charcuterie board for your dog have also been called barkuterie board, charpoocherie boards, dogcuterie boards or pupcuterie boards.

S

poil your pup this holiday season with a fun and festive charcuterie board full of doggie delights, although we prefer to call it a pupcuterie board. This is a great way to bring in a variety of healthy snacks for your dog to feast on while humans indulge in their special holiday meals. Your dog can enjoy this pupcuterie board himself in little bites over a few days or it can be shared as a paw-ty favorite with doggy siblings and puppy friends. Of coarse, your dog doesn’t understand that the object of the pupcuterie board is to slowly graze on the food over a period of time and so it should never be left for them to help themselves to. Rather, it’s up to pet parents to make those discretionary choices for their furry ones by feeding them the treats over a period of time. In addition, a pupcuterie board for your dog should never replace your dog’s usual meal as it

just provides appropriate snack foods to be given while celebrating the holidays with your pup. Pet parents can unlock their creative side when designing the pupcuterie board by using a variety of foods that not only specifically cater to their dog’s diet and/or nutritional needs but that provide a variety of special treats that are not part of their everyday dietary routine. Think of using food that comes in a variety of shapes and colors that would look pretty when put together but that also provides a safe and healthy option tailored specifically for your dog. Make a unique display by including dog toys and even tennis balls on the board. The pupcuterie board for your dog can be as fancy or casual as you would like it to be. Be practical and create the size of the board based on size of your dog and/or by the number of dogs in your household or guests.

Foods that you can put on your pet’s pupcuterie board can range from fruits and vegetables to proteins and dog cookies. Here are a few food ideas that you can include: freshly cut carrot, frozen blueberries, frozen bananas, sliced strawberries, fresh apples, rawhide or jerky chew sticks, peanut butter, dried sweet potato strips, dehydrated fish or fish skins, a slice of toast cut in cubes, dried or raw meats from your nearby pet food store, sliced boiled eggs, cottage cheese and a variety of fancy dog cookies that you can purchase at your local dog bakery. If you prefer to be more hands on, bake your own doggie treats from scratch or cook up fresh salmon or chicken for your dog’s pupcuterie board. However, there are some foods that you should absolutely avoid such as grapes, raisins, nuts, chocolate, onions, garlic, processed cheese and meats.

Hanukkah Celebrations with your Pup Include your dog in your Hanukkah festivities. There are so many presents you can get your dog such as a cute Hanukkah collar or bowtie to celebrate. Although playing dreidel with your dog nearby is a bad idea because there are small parts that your dog can ingest, there are many Hanukkah dog toys and treats available to purchase. The lighting of the candles is a special time that can be shared with your dog. When saying your blessings and lighting the candle, be sure to keep your dog safely away from the menorah and never leave your dog unattended with the open flame of a candle. Of course, no Hanukkah celebration is complete without festive foods. As much as latkes, donuts and chocolates are a delicious part of every Hanukkah celebration, your dog cannot share those foods with you because they are toxic, fried, full of sugar or poisonous to pets. Just by applying a few simple safety precautions, your dog will be sure to have a fun and enjoyable holiday with you! 20 • Winter 2023 | Connecticut Dog

Holiday Paw-ty Etiquette It’s party time! It’s paw-ty time! No party is a fun party unless all guests and pawticipants are comfortable and relaxed. Although you may be running frantic cleaning, decorating and preparing the food before guests arrive, it’s important to take your dog for a nice, long walk so that your pup can exercise and burn some energy ahead of time. This would also be a good opportunity for you to release some of that stress by going on that long walk with your dog because, after all, your dog can pick up on your energy and if you’re anxious, they can become anxious, too. When you return from your walk, provide your dog with water and food before the party begins. For dogs who prefer to be alone during these types of gatherings, set up a quiet room where your pet can go to rest or put up a pet or baby gate to separate your dog from the party area of the house. However, if your dog is social and enjoys being around people then be sure all decorations are in a safe place so your dog does not get hurt and that there aren’t any small toys or other items lying around that your dog can ingest or choke on. You may also want to kindly ask guests and children to refrain from feeding your dog food from their plates as a means to prevent your dog from eating something he shouldn’t.

I

f you are going to visit family or friends for the holiday, be sure to bring a blanket or your dog’s bed, as long as it’s something that has familiar smells on it so that they can feel comfortable and secure when away from home, even if it’s only for a few hours. Also, take a couple of toys or chew treats to keep them busy and entertained.

Routines.

Limitations.

Prepare, Prepare, Prepare….

Create a routine or a regular schedule for your dog. When it’s time for holiday gatherings at your house, continue to maintain your pet’s usual daily program because it can help to keep your dog calm so he’s not overwhelmed. Here are some tips to help pet parents during holiday gatherings at your house:

Give your dog a chance to decompress and to take a break from the party. Take your dog out for frequent potty breaks. Provide your dog a safe place, such as quiet room to rest for a while so he doesn’t have to interact with guests. Basically, limit the time your dog spends at the party.

Distractions.

Training.

Here are some tips to help pet parents during holiday gatherings while the gatherings are happening:

Here are some ideas to help pet parents to prepare before hosting any holiday festivities around the house:

You should train your dog some basic commands. Simple commands such as sit, stay, leave it and down can really make a difference in how your dog behaves and it allows you to have control over situations.

Socialization. Have your dog meet family and friends in advance, if possible. Take your dog around to meet other people and pets in your neighborhood. Consider taking your dog out on play dates and other excursions that keep you both active and social.

Awareness. Keep an eye on your dog’s body language and the body language of the people that surround your dog. Watch and listen to what people are telling you. Equally, if your pet seems stressed or anxious, then allow your dog time to rest and relax away from people. See how your dog and guests are interacting, especially young children. Be ready to take action to prevent any unwanted activity and intervene quickly, if necessary.

While your dog is in the other room and away from the party, give your dog a special toy or treat, preferably something that is safe and enjoyable to them. This will keep them busy, entertained and distracted for a while. Be sure to check on your pup from time to time to make sure he’s okay.

Break time. Give yourself time to enjoy your party, the company of close family and friends and the purpose for the celebration of the holiday season.

ucked away in the small southwestern village of Abiquiu (pronounced A-bih-kyoo), just north of Santa Fe and west of Taos, New Mexico is the charming Abiquiu Inn. It’s here, within this same location where artist Georgia O’Keeffe found her inspiration and made her home and studio. This very special area is where folks can go off the beaten path, explore an untamed territory, discover things they never imagined they could while escaping to a place of comfort and relaxation. Abiquiu Inn is the resting spot to those who’s hearts run free. When arriving at the inn you’ll step into a shop that also hosts as a gallery to local artisans showcasing exquisite southwestern art, jewelry, pottery, and seasonal apparel in addition to regional books, cards and gift items. This part of the inn also serves as the meeting space for social events, monthly art exhibits and various 24 • Winter 2023 | Connecticut Dog

workshops. Adjacent to the shop and gallery is the café, which provides more local art within the casual, rustic dining area. Here you’ll find specialty drinks and traditional food of northern New Mexico that can be enjoyed morning, noon and night. The outdoor terrace is a dreamy space under a canopy of trees and strung lights with an outdoor fireplace, providing warmth on those colder desert nights. A few steps away from the terrace you’ll find a unique sculpture walk and garden that can be enjoyed all year long. The stylish accommodations of Abiquiu Inn provides guests with thirty casitas and houses; all which boast the design and comfort you’d find in a typical New Mexico home. Step out your back door and enjoy the beautiful landscape, native vegetation and wildlife, in addition to an endless field that lies in the back of the property and is home to donkeys and horses. It’s so quiet, serene and peaceful and you’ll never want to leave.

However yet, there is so much to see and do within this vast region. The Georgia O’Keeffe Welcome Center sits next to the inn. Be sure to take a public tour of the Georgia O’Keeffe home and studio. It’s also the perfect opportunity for you to delve into the magnificent landscape by taking up outdoor painting or photography yourself. Visit Ghost Ranch, a retreat center that provides 21,000 acres of hiking with museums, a dinosaur quarry and horseback trail. Step along the Poshuouinge Ruins, which is a half-mile trail along the Chama River Valley leading to pueblo ruins containing over 700 rooms with plazas and kivas. Stop by Echo Amphitheater to enjoy the beautiful rock formations. Venture out to Puye Cliff Dwellings to see the 12th century Pueblo ruins. Camp out while you boat, fish, swim, or water ski at Abiquiu Lake. W

e had so many amazing dogs from all over Connecticut that were entered into this year’s contest but only one dog would win. With the many votes from all those who participated in this event, the family and friends of the finalists and our devoted readers, this year’s contest was another great success! At the end of the contest, Sir Elton came out ahead with the most votes. Congratulations, Sir Elton! Sir Elton, from New Haven, is the winner of the 2023 Connecticut Dog cover contest! We asked Sir Elton’s human mom a few questions and here’s what she had to say: How did Sir Elton become a part of your family? In March of 2020 when COVID happened I thought (like so many others) this is probably a good time to get a dog! What Breed is your dog? Sir Elton is a not-so-mini (53lb) Goldendoodle! How old is Sir Elton? Sir Elton is 3!

When is Sir Elton’s birthday? His birthday is March 27, 2020! How did Sir Elton get his name? I perform cabaret professionally in New York City (NYC) and I was slated to do my Woman Under The Covers: Elton John show in June of 2020 when of course, COVID shut everything down. So, Sir Elton got his name in lieu of the show going on. Does Sir Elton have any pet siblings? If so, who are the siblings and what’s their dynamic like? Sir Elton does not have pet siblings however, one of this litter mates, Lil’ Hankie Doodle,

26 • Winter 2023 | Connecticut Dog

lives in Virginia and his parents reached out via Instagram after putting two and two together about a year ago. They seem to have very similar “side eye” qualities! Does Sir Elton prefer people or other dogs/ animals to play with? Sir Elton loves dogs and people but give him a human with a ball and he will choose that over a dog every time! What is the funniest story you can tell us about Sir Elton? The funniest story I can tell about Sir Elton is an ongoing stint he has that we call NPR Coffee Chats with Sir Elton. We have coffee in the morning and he sits with us listening to NPR

and comments on the stories and news. He is very expressive and vocal-and the things that come out of his mouth! He tends to be very opinionated though. My partner and I are both therapists so we are working on that with him. What is your most cherished memory that you have of Sir Elton?

Photo Credit: April Kate Dog Photographer

My most cherished memory of Sir Elton is when I was rehearsing “The Rose” for a friend’s mother’s funeral, and he had just been acting absolutely insane and the minute he heard that song, he laid at my feet and just looked up at me and relaxed. The reason this is so special to me and not any other song that I sing, is that this was my grandmother’s favorite song for me to sing to her when I was a child and also that I sang at her funeral, and she was my angel. I hadn’t sung it in years and his reaction was just so special. What qualities set Sir Elton apart from other dogs? Sir Elton is incredibly insightful, a quality I can’t say I see in many animals. He is incredibly perceptive and people feel that he understands what they’re saying and feeling on deep levels. What is Sir Elton’s favorite activity? Sir Elton’s favorite activity by far is ball! Second place is swimming! Do you have any special plans with Sir Elton this holiday season? If so, what are those plans?

Dog Photographer

The holidays are the best with Sir Elton! We look so forward to Sir Elton running down the stairs to find his gifts under the tree (he knows which are his) and tearing them apart like a mad man! Toys are not lost on this pup! He plays with every toy and is so proud of all of them! How would you describe Sir Elton in five words or less? Sir Elton in five words or less: Intuitive, Empathetic, Devoted, Passionate, and Goofy! Sir Elton’s mom concludes our interview by stating: “Thank-you for voting for Sir Elton, Connecticut!”

In fall 2021 he became less interested in playing, socializing, and eating. He had moments when he was fatigued and had trouble moving. We wondered if he was in pain and connected with Dr. Hammond, a neurologist at Pieper Veterinary, who discovered the actual root of the problem, a brain tumor. Benjamin’s symptoms began worsening at a rapid pace, and without treatment Benjamin would not be with us for much longer. We were heartbroken. When we adopted him as our engagement puppy (we decided to adopt a rescue instead of getting an engagement ring), we promised to do all we could to care for him always. This was the time to make good on that promise. Dr. Hammond coached us through a treatment path he believed would extend Benjamin’s life in a meaningful way, which took us to Angell Memorial Animal Hospital in Boston for a month of radiation treatment. Benjamin quickly settled into a routine for his daily hospital visits. He greeted all the staff each morning at drop-off, he cuddled with the techs, and he proudly trotted back to us at the end of each day. That was nearly two years ago. Today Benjamin is 11-years old, and he’s got the same energy, focus, and joie de vivre he›s always had. He is thriving, and we are grateful for every game of fetch, every stick collected and strewn about our lawn, and every snuggle on the couch. None of this time was guaranteed, and each day with him is the most incredible gift. Text and images were provided by Benjamin’s mom, April.

arla came to our home in May of 2021. At 15-months old she had been given up on and turned over to a

rescue in Rhode Island. She came to us 20 pounds overweight and the stress of everything caused a lot of her hair to fall out. With a new healthy diet and daily exercise she lost the weight and grew a new shiny coat. She soon learned the sport of Frisbee and was hooked. She competes in World Wide Frisbee K9 Toss & Fetch league and Updog events. This year she started dock diving and earned two titles. She also dabbles in Barn Hunt. Darla has been such a blessing to our family and is always game for hikes and trips to the beach. Text and images were provided by Darla’s dad, Craig.

e would like to thank the many wonderful dogs that participated in this year’s cover contest. Although we think each and every dog that entered this year’s contest belongs on the front cover, only ten finalists were randomly selected for the two-week voting period that took place on our website. At the end of the voting period, the dog with the most votes claims the front cover status and prize package. Congratulations to the 2023 Connecticut Dog Cover Contest winner, Sir Elton! Our second runner up is Benjamin and in third place is Darla. The photographs were all provided by each of the dog’s human parents and they all provided us with information and fun facts about their dogs. Here’s what they had to say: In loving memory of Kaiser, who loved wrestling with his furry siblings and playful times with his cat. Grateful to Darell Bumbala for capturing his beauty before he bravely faced bone cancer. Text provided by Kaiser’s mom, Liz.

Runner Ups Gunny’s title name is Nighthawks Lock and Load, born May 23, 2023. His dad is a Marine Veteran and his mom is a nurse. Gunny’s favorite place is The Proper Pet in Tolland, CT. He loves walks, car rides, & belly rubs.

Countdown!

12 New Year’s Resolutions You Can Make for Your Dog Written by: Amelia Mae Roberts

Resolution #12: Foster or adopt a playmate for your dog. One of the best things you can do for your pet is to pro-

vide him with a playmate or companion. It’s nice for your pet to spend his days with another furry being. You will need to make sure the new pet is a good companion for your current pet and vice versa. Talk to a local rescue organization or shelter to help you with becoming a foster or pet parent for an adoptable dog or cat.

and friends but you can still make time each day to play with your dog. Your dog waits all day for your attention. Make your dog’s day special by setting some time to play with your dog and his favorite toy or game every day and a few times each day. This will also create special bonding time for you both. Not only will it be fun for your dog, you’re guaranteed to have a blast, too.

Resolution #11: Vacation with your dog more often. When you make plans for a vacation or a mini trip, be sure to

Resolution #5: Create an Instagram for your dog. Why not? This will allow you to spend more time with your dog

include your dog. How amazing would it be for your dog to visit these incredible places with you. You don’t have to put your dog on a plane and travel to exotic far away places. Instead, stay in the United States and take a road trip to a state you always wanted to go see. This would be much easier and safer for you and your dog. Although taking your pet on a road trip can have its challenging moments, the trade off is great. It allows you and your dog to bond together with new people and places. It also makes for some amazing photographs.

Resolution #10: Exercise regularly. There’s no doubt

that the cold weather can prevent you from walking your dog. The days are shorter and the nights are longer. These things shouldn’t be your excuse from taking long walks with your dog this winter. If your dog doesn’t have a coat or sweater then now is the time to get him one. You both can get all bundled up for a long invigorating walk in your neighborhood or visit a local hiking trail. Regular exercise is good for both you and your dog.

Resolution #9: Don’t overfeed your dog. There are many people who make a resolution to loose weight for the New Year. People aren’t the only ones who need to loose weight. Dogs that are overweight need a motivated owner to regulate their eating habits. This can certainly be a great resolution for you to help your overweight dog with. Read labels on your dog’s food bag and feed your dog the appropriate amount necessary according to your dog’s size or weight. No more overloading your dog with table scraps. If you want to give snacks and treats to your dog, be sure they are the healthy kind. Resolution #8: Schedule time with the vet. Much like children, dogs should have annual check ups. Make sure your dog gets an annual check up each year. By doing so, you are making sure your dog is healthy and stays healthy. This is a good time to talk to your veterinarian about any concerns or questions you have about your dog. Resolution #7: Be more active with your dog. Go

and do fun things with your dog more often. There are many pet-friendly establishments and outdoor activities that your dog can go to and be a part of. By becoming more actively involved with your dog you are able to form a stronger and closer bond. It’s also a great way to enjoy life in a different way and create some incredible memories.

Resolution #6: Set up regular play times with your dog each day. Sure, life keeps you busy with work, family, 30 • Winter 2023 | Connecticut Dog

because you have to take pictures to post. Your dog will love the treats you give to him for posing nicely for the picture. Then, when you have some time, print your Instagram photos and create a special memory book of your dog. It’s highly recommended that you #connecticutdogmagazine each time you post a picture of your dog for a chance to have your dog’s picture printed in the magazine or shared on Connecticut Dog’s social media.

Resolution #4: Groom your dog regularly. Much like when you go to the hair salon or barber, a dog needs to get their fur and nails taken care of, too. Grooming your dog on a regular basis is important for your dog’s health. Also, basic and regular grooming provides your dog with a chance to look and smell his very best. Dogs feel better about themselves when they are groomed, even when they are scared at first. Grooming can be done at home or at a local grooming salon. Basic grooming would include a shampoo, cut, dry, and nail trimming. It’s easy to bath your dog but it’s a better idea to seek a professional to spiff up your dog with a haircut or nail trimming. Resolution #3: Brush your dog’s teeth and provide good oral hygiene. People go to the dentist and dogs get

dental cleanings and work done on their teeth through their veterinarian. Healthy teeth and gums can extend your dogs life by years. You can make a difference by brushing your dog’s teeth at least once a week. If you do this, you can probably eliminate a professional dental cleaning at the veterinarian’s office, saving you a lot of money. Sometimes dogs get injured or as they get older they may need surgical work done. Inquire about cleanings and overall dental care for your dog with your veterinarian.

Resolution #2: Teach an old dog a new trick.

Okay, so your dog doesn’t need to be old to learn a new trick. Teach your dog to roll over, give paw, or to move a little to the left. Make it fun no matter what trick you teach your dog to do. Be creative, do your research, choose safety first and always use positive training methods. Later, you can impress your friends and family by putting on a show featuring your dog and his new trick.

Resolution #1: Update or make ID tags for your dog. More than often, owners leave their dogs without proper iden-

tification. Your dog should always wear a nametag that has your dog’s name and your current phone number. You can also include your current address. This will help get your dog home safely should your dog escape from the yard or if your dog becomes lost one day.

RESCUE A ND SHE L T E R G U I D E

S

o many of our local rescue organizations and animal shelters are overwhelmed with homeless dogs that need to find their forever families. This great need is, in many ways, due to the large number of returned pets from animal adoptions that took place at the start of covid-19. People are moving, going back to work, taking vacations, losing their jobs, suffering from either financial and/or medical hardships along with a variety of other reasons causing the uptick in returned dogs to shelters across our state. The combination of the many new dogs routinely coming into the shelters, along with the overwhelming animal surrenders, our local animal shelters and rescue organizations depend greatly on the generosity, love and support from volunteers, donators, and adopters. To bring awareness about this matter to our pet communities, this issue contains information about some of these animal shelters and rescue organizations. With thanks to the support of dog loving local business owners, Connecticut Dog has put together this editorial feature that will continue to be included in each issue of the magazine going forward where these and additional animal welfare facilities will be featured. As you turn the following pages, please be mindful of the animal shelters and rescue organizations located within your own community and think about ways that you can help make a difference in the lives of abandoned, abused, neglected and homeless animals.

Army’s Legacy Animal Rescue & Sanctuary

www.armyslegacy.org We are a non-profit 501(c)(3), foster-based rescue and sanctuary based in Bristol, CT. Our mission is to save the neglected, abused & discarded. We strive to speak for the voiceless, educate the community and provide helpful resources. Army’s Legacy works with families in need of rehoming their animals, municipalities that have animals set for euthanasia, veterinarians and hospitals that have families that can’t afford care, and social media where pets are given away for “free”. We help the “harder” to place dogs as well. We have multiple trainers that we work with to help our Legacies. We are always looking for experienced fosters to join our team. Army’s Legacy solely runs off donations from our supporters and we are 100% volunteer based. Once a Rescue, Forever a Legacy Sponsored by: Central Hospital for Veterianry Medicine

Whether it’s providing resources so pets can keep their homes, or being a safe haven for critters with nowhere to turn, the Connecticut Humane Society (CHS) serves vulnerable pets across the state. Founded in 1881, CHS is the oldest and most comprehensive animal welfare organization in Connecticut. CHS has long focused on homeless pets, veterinary care and adoptions, but also has programs making it possible for pets to keep their families: the Pet Food Pantry, reduced-fee Fox Memorial Clinic, traveling wellness clinics, behavior assistance, and crisis foster homes. CHS is the leading resource in the state for companion animal welfare, enriching the lives of families and communities through adoption services, medical care, education, and prevention of cruelty. As an independent nonprofit located in Newington, Waterford and Westport, CHS receives no ongoing municipal funding and isn’t associated with national animal welfare groups. The pets rely on the generosity and support of donors.

CT Animal House Inc. (CTAH) is a 501(c)3 foster based non-profit established over 12 years ago. We are dedicated to ending the euthanasia of adoptable animals in our Connecticut pounds by providing emergency veterinary care, support, and adoption promotion, so that each animal has the best chance at adoption. CTAH often takes in the hardest cruelty and neglect cases, and provides these animals the support needed, so that they can find the loving homes that they deserve. As an established non-profit, your donation is tax deductible. Please visit us at ctanimalhouse.org and follow us on Facebook at CT Animal House.

Adopt August!

The Newfoundland is a large, working dog most noted for their ability to perform water rescue and drafting/carting, and of course, as one of the world’s most beloved family dogs. The mildtempered Newfoundland is known for their big personalities, sensitive nature and excellent companionship.

ABOUT NNR In addition to its high emotional intelligence and sensitivity, the Newf is also highly trainable and can be quite clever (especially when paid in food!). Due to their sensitive nature, Newfoundlands learn best with confident leadership, rewards and kind guidance rather than force. They must be trained from an early age or have owners committed to regular training to avoid a dog the size of a human jumping up on people, pulling on the leash and other behaviors that smaller dogs can get away with. Some common health issues in the Newfoundland breed include hip dysplasia, elbow dysplasia, allergies, heart disease, arthritis, bloating and other issues common to giant breeds. Chances of having a Newf with these issues is decreased by seeking out reputable preservation breeders rather than online mills or backyard breeders.

Newfoundlands are often known to be crafty when it comes to acquiring food and because of their giant size they can reach your countertop easily. They are famous for their excessive drooling and shedding, and their fans wouldn’t have it any other way!

National Newfoundland Rescue Inc. was founded by a group of Newfoundland Rescue volunteers with a combined total of over 60 years of rescue experience. After working with breed club and other rescues for many years, it became apparent that there were still holes in the rescue community that needed to be filled, primarily in the areas where they don’t have a local Breed Club Rescue, or in cases where there is a Newfoundland Mix in need (most of the regional clubs only accept purebred Newfoundlands). With this in mind, National Newfoundland Rescue was born! We are a foster based 501(c)(3) nonprofit Newfoundland and Newfoundland Mix Rescue dedicated to saving the lives of Newfoundland dogs across America.
