WELCOMETHEWORLDTO LONDONAND UK The 2012 Summer Olympic Games, officially known as the Games of the XXX Olympiad or "London 2012 Olympic Games", are scheduled to take place in London, England, United Kingdom from 27 July to 12 August 2012. London will become the first city to officially host the modern Olympic Games three times, having previously done so in 1908 and in 1948. There will be 17,000 athletes representing 205 countries in 26 sports of the Olympic. London is the capital city of England and the United Kingdom, the largest metropolitan area in the United Kingdom, and the largest urban zone in the European Union by most measures. Located on the River Thames, London has been a major settlement for two millennium, its history going back to its founding by the Romans, who called it Londinium. London is a leading global city, with strengths in the arts, commerce, education, entertainment, fashion, finance, healthcare, media, professional services, research and development, tourism and transport all contributing to its prominence. It is the world's leading financial centre alongside New York City and has the fifth-largest city GDP in the world (and the largest in Europe). It has the third most international visitors in the world and London Heathrow is the world's busiest airport by number of international passengers. London has a diverse range of peoples, cultures, and religions, and more than 300 languages are spoken within its boundaries. London’s history stretches back to the ages of Henry VII ,William Shakespeare. Disaster struck during the Black Death in the mid-14th century, when London lost nearly a third of its population. Tourism is one of London's prime industries and employs the equivalent of 350,000 full-time workers in London, while annual expenditure by tourists is around £15 billion. London attracts over 14 million international visitors per year, making it the world's most visited city. London attracts 27 million overnight-stay visitors every year. In 2009 some of the most visited attractions were British museum, National gallery, London Eye, Madame Tussads and many more to describe. London is a major centre of higher education teaching and research and its 43 universities form the largest concentration of higher education in Europe. Imperial college of London and University College London are ranked among best 10 colleges of the world. The official mascots for the 2012 Summer Olympic and Paralympic Games were unveiled on 19 May 2010.They are named Wenlock and Mandeville. They are named Wenlock, after the Shropshire town of Much Wenlock, which held a forerunner of the current Olympic Games, and Mandeville, after Stoke Mandeville, where a forerunner to the Paralympic Games were first held. Hoping to see many more visitors and representatives to cheer for this version of summer Olympic and Paralympics and add to the attractions of the already existing London Metropolis.
