Welcome the World to London & UK The City
London is the capital city of the United Kingdom. It has an area of 1,570 sq.km. London is a leading global city with strengths in commerce, education, arts etc. London has a population of 7,825,200. Some tourist spots in London are: Buckingham Palace, the London Eye, Piccadilly Circus etc. There are numerous museums, galleries, libraries etc.

History In the mid 14th century Black Death claimed a third of London’s population. During the Great Fire of London in 1666, many parts of the city were destroyed.
Recovering from all these hazards, London established itself as the world’s largest city from 1831 to 1925. The Summer Olympics 1908 and 1948 were held in the Wembley Stadium.
In 2012, London will be the first city to host the modern Summer Olympics three times.

The Government
The British Parliament is referred to as ‘the Mother of parliaments’ as it was a model for various parliaments.

Religions Different religions are seen in London. The majority of Londoners are Christians. Muslims, Hindus, Jews, Sikhs, Buddhists are also seen in London.

Education London is a major centre of education, teaching and research and has 43 universities. Many arts colleges such as, the London Contemporary Dance School, the Royal College of Art, Royal College of Music etc are also seen in London.
Economy The City of London is a large financial centre. Finance and tourism are London’s most important industries. London has 480 overseas banks, more than any other city in the world. London is the world’s most visited city as it attracts about 14 million international visitors.

Culture The entertainment district of the West End has its focus around the Leicester Square and Piccadilly Circus, with the City of Westminster.
London is a leading city in fashion. London has a great variety of cuisine. Indian, Bangladeshi and Chinese restaurants are seen. London celebrates many festivals every year, such as Chelsea Flower Show, Notting Hill Carnival etc.

Literature London is the place where many great works of literature were composed. Samuel Pepys, Charles Dickens, Virginia Woolf are some of the writers of city. William Shakespeare spent a large part of his life living and working in London.
Transport The public transport network of London is one of the best in the world. The London Underground is an underground railway system. Buses, trams, cabs etc are other means of transport. London has a large number of airports.

Conclusion We conclude that London has developed a lot scientifically, retaining particular elements of its history. In each field London has an important position in the world. People around the globe are invited to this beautiful city. One can see people of different countries living in harmony, the historical monuments and heritages well-preserved and the wonderful scenic beauty that adds to the glory of London. It would be wonderful to visit this city when the Summer Olympics 2012 is conducted here.
