ISA offered a framework within which we were to form international partnerships and achieve specific and comprehensive curriculum goals. It encouraged exchange of ideas and information with the partner schools, which was an enriching experience for both sides. It broadened the outlook and expanded the horizons for young learners. At our school where striving for excellence is the basic requirement, translating this dream into a reality was not difficult. This responsibility was shared by Mrs Sunita Rajiv and her tirelessly working team. Every cell and every nerve of the institution worked in perfect harmony towards this goal. Planning activities, integrating them into the main curriculum, learning IT skills, coordinating with different departments were new learning experiences. Whether it was finding a partner school or clearing out the webs in our minds regarding designing of activities, British Council always extended wholehearted support. There is no denying the fact that ISA has given a new approach to our learning, and has broadened our outlook. We feel we have truly taught our children the real meaning of our school’s guiding thought, “GLOBAL PERSPECTIVE; INDIAN VALUES”

A fascinating experience for a Marathi medium school Working towards the ISA was a new experience for our school. This was the first time our Marathi medium school participated in such a big project. Despite our initial scepticism, we decided to take up the challenge. By participating in the ISA we discovered new ideas and approaches towards learning. It benefitted the teachers and students. The teachers were exposed to new methods of teaching which we have now initiated in the school. The teachers and students have also become familiar to new technology like using emails. ISA gave us the opportunity to learn about other cultures and traditions. The activities encouraged team spirit among the school staff, parents and students. Working for the ISA was a joyful learning experience for the school. We also were able to identify the talents of our students and capture the spirit of internationalism. We are glad to be part of ISA and would like to express our gratitude to British Council for providing us this opportunity.

An exceptional experience for our school In July 2009, the idea of ISA project was brought into the school by the school co-ordinator. After getting clarity about the project, the school started working towards it in full swing. Our teachers and students took active part and gathered information from various resources like the Internet, magazines and newspapers. We tried to overcome the obstacles we faced during the process and were ready for evaluation within the deadline. The suggestions and opinions given to us by the students and parents were valuable. Once we completed the project, we organised two days exhibition for parents and other locals. We received a favorable response which was quite inspiring for the school. We also got positive media coverage. Besides getting our project report published in newspapers, we got excellence award for our project. The school was able to achieve this because of the collective effort of teachers, students, parents and the management.

Achieving global standards of excellence

The journey was undoubtedly a challenging task. At the beginning, we were cynical about how much of internationalism we would be able to bring in. As the project gained momentum we found, much to our surprise, that many international visitors were happy to visit our school to share first hand information on project topics. Through these projects we have felt that the people around the world are very close in spite of the physical distance. Students were motivated by the creative format and the opportunity to make new friends around the world. We were able to embed most of the activities in the curriculum, which made the concepts and content relevant to the participantsâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; experience. PowerPoint presentations, exhibitions, drawings, brochures, interactive sessions and mock sessions by students are proof of how much knowledge they have gathered through these activities. We hope to continue with similar projects which help us in realising our vision to achieve global standards of excellence in education, to create lifelong learners and to produce caring human beings.

Going beyond the confines of the syllabi

While working on ISA projects, both teachers and students had the experience to study subjects apart from the school syllabus. It has helped in expanding our learning horizon, and has created awareness among students about people and countries of the world. The most challenging task was to integrate the activities within with the school syllabus without disturbing the routine of the school. The most enjoyable moment for us was the project exchange with the students of St. Thomas RC College, Manchester. Our students exchanged emails with their peers on sports like football. Even in future, we would like to continue learning more about the cultures all over the world and environmental issues faced by different countries.

Visible benefits for the entire school

The most significant impact of ISA for our school was that all activities conducted under ISA were implemented with a sense of fun and with a view to gain more knowledge about the world. Earlier many of these activities were limited to the school level but with ISA, we seem to have an International platform right at our doorstep. This opportunity was received whole heartedly by both - teachers as well as the students. They were excited to research about what was going on in different countries. The most enjoyable activity was â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;Food Fairâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;, where different dishes of various countries were prepared and sold. The students were dressed in the traditional dress of the country where the specific dish came from. In the near future we hope to have the opportunity to have a partnership with an overseas school to make our experiences of similar activities even more real and authentic!

An awe-inspiring journey that has just begun

(Gurgaon, Sec.46) The ISA platform has given us the much needed exposure for pursuing cross-cultural exchanges. The international interactions have widened our studentsâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; horizons manifold times. Our ISA activities focused on global teaching-learning skills and global values. Throughout the year the students got the opportunity to showcase their work in the form of display boards, charts, drawings, paintings and PowerPoint presentations to the parents and other invited dignitaries. What made the journey memorable was the interaction with foreign students and the keen interest and involvement of our parents and resource persons. Bumpy ride at times, but well-worth the effort

(Noida)

There have been crests and troughs along the path. Joy upon having established one international school link and frustration upon losing another! The unexpectedness of ‘swine flu’ and the cold wave! Many activities had to be rescheduled as there was an unanticipated school closure and congregation of children in assemblies and auditoria was not advised when they came to school. Despite everything, the motivation to overcome these hurdles and emerge triumphant is what kept us going. The students have loved every moment of it and have eagerly participated in all activities. It reinforced our faith in the innate eagerness to learn and the spirit of unabashed joy that exists in the young. ISA is a novel way of introducing an international dimension to regular education. The inherent idea that embodies such a programme is to give the students a world-view. This is indeed a pre-requisite for modern times. Such education goes a long way in promoting acceptance of the ‘foreign’ and the ‘different’. The earlier the age at which such an education begins, the better a human being is able to encompass this concept.

Joyful learning experience for everyone involved

(Pushp Vihar)

When we initiated our pen-pal programme with our partner school in UK, the students were so enthusiastic that they not only gave their own ideas for new projects but also worked out their own time frame to complete the projects on time. The entire programme has helped our children in many ways – they’ve become self-reliant, they’ve acquired an international dimension in the way they think and have learnt about many different aspects of another country, they’ve become aware of similarities as well as distinction in the cultures, customs and life styles, and most importantly, they have been able to broaden their horizons. The learning experience was immense for the students as well as the teachers, who had to develop innovative teaching methods and strategies to incorporate all the ISA projects in their regular curriculum, so that not only the projects become interesting for the children but also the learning outcomes could be achieved in a tangent manner. We thank British Council for giving us the opportunity to participate in this programme which encouraged us to think out-of-the-box and deploy project based teaching which proved to be a great success.

Rediscovering values for living in a global village

(Sector 43 Gurgaon) The International School Award gave us an excellent platform to expose our students to a variety of experiences. The one we cherish the most is the interactions they had and continue to have with our partner schools in the UK. The enthusiasm with which the teachers and students of the entire school embarked upon this journey was truly exhilarating. The product of this tremendously exciting exercise was monumental and the idea of reducing it into a manageable size which would fit into the given file folder was indeed a daunting task. But the result was well worth the effort. We discovered hidden talents. The school buzzed with excitement and the learning went to a different level altogether! ISA served as the means to achieve an end

The excitement was palpable in the school when it all began. Drafting of the action plan involved a lot of introspection, exploring and research on certain issues but the active contribution by the staff made it all that easy for us. Since we aspired to go global at every level, we decided to involve everyone right from nursery level to the higher classes. Students and teachers participating in these activities came up with innovative ideas that made this programme even more enjoyable and enriching. The process of compiling a dossier was yet another exhilarating experience where we could synergise the process of planning, coordination and documentation. It also mobilised and motivated everyone to work in a team. We aim to continue to forge ahead by providing opportunities to our children so that they can proudly say that they are not merely the citizens of India but they are the citizens of the world. On the whole the entire journey was momentous and a meaningful experience. First step towards bringing in an international dimension Our aim was to change the teaching-learning methods, developing international links and expanding the thinking skills of the students. It has been our immense pleasure to be a part of the prestigious ISA programme and develop an international ethos. Through the Global Gateway website we made links with Alison Lampert of Hopton Primary School in Essex, UK and Andy Semple of Red Hills Devon School in Exeter, UK. We also recently established links with Rob Hughes from Stamford Bridge Primary School and with Michael Wade of Brady Primary School. It was great fun to interact with our friends abroad. All these links have opened up new avenues for our school. Exchange of emails and questionnaires generated a lot of curiosity and excitement among students and teachers. We exchanged ideas about our diverse cultures, traditions, food habits, seasons, etc. and these interactions also helped teachers to enhance their teaching techniques. Right from selecting the activities, executing them and finally putting the dossier together, there has been a lot of learning all the way. The partnership we have developed with the UK school has helped to embed a global dimension in our curriculum.

Striking a chord with the students and the teachers A journey of this nature called for an equal amount of enthusiasm, interest and participation from students as well as educators. An action plan of international projects in sync with the curriculum, across grades and subjects, with detailed description of each activity was sketched out. Student participation for each of our ISA projects spelt Energy, Enthusiasm, Interest and Vigour. Students not only gained indepth knowledge of the assigned project, but were also exposed to its international aspect and relevance. Teachers were able to explore the international perspective of each project and thus, were able to inculcate within themselves and the young minds of children, the global relevance for the projects. The enthusiasm and intensity of purpose for the project came very naturally to everyone, reinstating our faith in our own curriculum and methodology, and ISA seemed an excellent way to strengthen and explore newer possibilities. We believe that it does not matter if we won the game; it is how we played it that matters. We know we played it wellâ&#x20AC;Śâ&#x20AC;Ś pretty well! And the fact that Avalon bagged the ISA award 2010-13 gives Team Avalon an unparalleled feeling of joy. What it has given us is a reward of a lifetime to cherish, for the invaluable experience!

Sparks of change through ISA

Our students and teachers were highly charged and tapped into all available sources to get relevant information for the various international topics. The feeling of responsibility increased. Communication skills were developed. Students and teachers along with the parent community came to know about the world outside Gujarat, and India. We observed a high level of increase in the creative and critical thinking skills of the students. Visits of Japanese teachers to our school added a personal touch and gave life to our projects. The exchange of the travel teddy with the Japanese school was a marvelous experience. It felt like we really had a Japanese guest to take home and make him aware of all the social and cultural aspects of our country! We also had our GSP partner schoolâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s teachers visiting us, which added further international dimension to our projects like international games, currencies, festivals, food and costumes. This was the second time we applied for the ISA but the experience was one of renewed energy and enthusiasm, and a great achievement for all of us!

The entire year of implementing the approved action plan was our chance to get together and learn about the world at large, broadening our horizons beyond our diverse nation. It also allowed us to realise just how much international dimension already exists in our curriculum, and that all we had to do was to bring it into focus. This made our tasks much easier and pleasurable. The activities were incorporated in the action plan in such a way that they simply and beautifully added another dimension to what the students were already learning. Along with exploring curricular aspects and issues, the students celebrated various International Days thus increasing multifold, their sense of involvement and participation in global issues of concern. UKIERI programme, epal links and projects, exchanging letters with counterparts in UK, France and the USA, our first foreign exchange student from the USA - all these became the highlights of our eventful year of the ISA. What made participation in this programme so special was the fact that it involved every student in the process of discovery. In the end, what the students unearthed was not just some information about other countries, but their own latent talents and attributes and thus came out as richer and better individuals.

A rewarding experience for the second time We first achieved the ISA in the year 2005. All the chests swelled with pride seeing the insignia that we were allowed to use for three years. Getting an award is not as difficult as retaining it. So once again we plunged headlong. This time we wanted to involve more students, more teachers and also parents and for that matter society. We did not want to leave any field untouched be it Literature, Technology or Art. Parents were involved in the projects and they helped in research work and in giving us feedback. Other schools were also involved by way of interschool activities. What gave a true sense of achievement was that all the ideas were original - outcome of our own creative thinking and brainstorming. It was indeed a rewarding experience to see the students and teachers pooling their ideas and technical expertise to give their shared vision a shape. It is gratifying to note that tenacious efforts donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t go in vain and we have yet again been awarded the International School Award.

Evolving with every activity and project The best part of the project was the deep involvement of parents, facilitators and the students. Everyone worked in unison to put it together. Contacts with international schools like La Seine College, France; Little Mead Primary School, UK; Alok Vidyashram, Nepal; Japanese Embassy School, Delhi; French Embassy School, Delhi, Russian Cultural Centre, Delhi helped immensely to get more information while working on ISA. The exposure to mankindâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s rich legacy was revealed through our special assemblies on Shakespeare, Pushkin, Martin Luther King and Dr Nelson Mandela, and we expressed our solidarity with the oppressed on International Solidarity Day and Human Rights Day. The students were sensitized about world peace on Hiroshima Day. The well defined activities have helped broaden our horizon and have made the teaching learning process rich and rewarding. It has been a wonderfully enriching experience for our children and the faculty. ISA has reiterated our belief in children being the best ambassadors of international peace and goodwill.

A hub of international activities The International School Award is a huge milestone in the annals of Carmel history. The spirit of internationalism surged through the staff and students alike while working on the project. Visits to restaurants with international cuisines, dance, theatre and places relevant to the topical projects were undoubtedly an eye-opener for our students. Rally on streets was a distinct hands-on experience for them. Chatting online, exchange of international mails, pictures and text enabled students to interact on an international platform. Guest lectures were a welcome digression from mere bookish knowledge. Answers to questionnairesâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;, preparation of charts, scrap books, exhibits and models were enriching, educational experiences. There was a tremendous upgradation of knowledge and teaching expertise for the teachers as well. Parentsâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; evaluation showed how involved they were in supporting the school and helping their children in the process. Our school has a strong conviction in activity based education and child centered curriculum. Hence it toils with projects anew when given an opportunity. The International School Award has indeed been a rewarding sojourn for Carmel High School.

Once experienced, twice encouraged

Our first tryst with ISA happened in 2005 with our school being among the 22 schools across the country that received ISA 2006-2009. We started on our second ISA journey in 2009 with yet another highly ambitious action plan that included 16 projects involving students from 4 yrs to 17 yrs. The projects were selected keeping in mind the need for inculcating global awareness and sensitivity about global issues. The diversity of activities entrenched in the curriculum made the journey exciting. The sole aim of our students was to research, recreate and present the information (collected from diverse sources) creatively. Working collaboratively with our UK partner school further ensured that there was an international perspective in our work. Students of Threshfield Primary School and our school made paintings on International Friendship Day and these were exhibited in their local areas. Glad tidings that we had received the ISA accreditation earlier added to our determination to empower our students to partake of the richness and diversity of world cultures.

We started with a bit of pessimism as far as response from overseas schools was concerned and were therefore pleasantly surprised when our partner school did respond, and that too very enthusiastically. Work for ISA was spaced out and more detailed planning was done to avoid haste while meeting the deadlines. However, the learning value has been nonetheless than our last timeâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s journey. The young students of our school amazed their teachers, parents and ISA coordinators with their enthusiastic response to global issues related to environment. The older students more than lived up to our expectations in their matured and responsible dealing of global issues which ranged from garbage disposal to Booker Prize winners. This timeâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s ISA journey has been much more smooth-sailing than what it was in 2006. After having done it once earlier, we became wiser and tried not to repeat our mistakes such as developing a bulky dossier, going overboard with certain activities, getting perturbed on not getting the desired response from our partner school, last minute rush and umpteen others. So how did we overcome these problems this time, one would ask. Thumb rule: plan well ahead and keep a back-up plan ready. Bulky dossier? Use more computer print-outs and less handmade paper with hand-written articles. Frequent meetings with the teachers prevented the surging enthusiasm from going overboard. We as teachers learnt not to underestimate the potential of the children (which includes students of our school, Farndon Primary School, Chester and Heathside School, Surrey).

A taste of the globalising world

(Malad) ISA has been an enriching experience and a journey of discovery of varied international flavours, a journey which has helped the teachers and students to understand global perspectives about issues while retaining interest in our own values and cultures. The programme has provided us an opportunity to take learning out of the confines of the classroom on and has enhanced our understanding of the multi-cultural world. The regular communication with partner schools abroad helped us to interact with students and educators from different countries. By connecting online with the partner schools, our students broadened their outlook and gained rich experience. The rich array of activities only ensured that the students got a taste of globalisation through ‘learning by doing’ method. After the initial phase of doubt and anxiety, the zeal and enthusiasm of the teachers and students scaled to its pinnacle and every corner of the school buzzed with excitement during the activity. The ‘colossal’ task materialising into a magnificent dossier was thoroughly enjoyed. The Award itself signifies that it is not an end but only a beginning of a beautiful journey across the world.

A well-structured framework of action

Our journey began with the special assembly on World Health Organization Day. The junior school teachers enthusiastically searched for partner schools and were lucky to receive quick responses from St. Johnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s international School, Bangkok and Otterham School, Scotland. Our school has been taking part in various other international projects but ISA was something unique. We had to define strategies to achieve our aim and constantly remind the teachers and students about the course of action and the deadlines. The experience of this exciting journey has motivated us to plunge further into the international arena to expose our students in order for them to become truly international citizens by understanding and appreciating diverse cultures and education systems.

A sea change in the teaching-learning process Working for the International School Award has been an enriching experience. We integrated our action plan within our curriculum so as to provide sufficient time and scope to carry out the activities systematically. Some activities were merged with the inter-house activities conducted every Saturday afternoon. Teachers and students were always on their toes gathering information, displaying charts, arranging soft boards, planning field trips and communicating with their peers and acquaintances in other countries of the world. Students and teachers were engaged in exchanging views, learning about new cultures, languages and traditions of their counterparts in other parts of the world. A new way to experience the world

Global citizenship through international dimension Having already experienced the excitement of winning this prestigious award, we can say that the ISA journey was yet again an enriching experience for the DAVIANS. Adding new perspectives to Education

The ISA programme provided an enriching experience that broke the monotony in the curriculum through myriad activities based on the school syllabi yet reflecting an international dimension. Building bridges across the world with other schools in the UK, US, Uganda, Brazil, Russia was an absorbing and enthralling task. This journey touched every subject and attempted to explore and increase our knowledge of other cultures, traditions and practices, besides teaching one to be appreciative of other cultures. In quest of a borderless world The ISA challenge came as a breath of fresh air into our schoolâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s existing curriculum and brought with it, a new approach to learning. Everyone experienced a heady sense of pride with each small success which ultimately led to an even bigger success. Once our action plan was approved, apprehension and consternation did prevail in the beginning, but with constant encouragement from our respected principal, we kept surging forward. Every topic in the action plan started getting life and made the teachers and students realise that there is indeed more to education. We experienced pride when our friends from Wales and Corus visited our school and shared their bounty of knowledge with us and also picked up our values and culture. Our students had the wonderful opportunity to interact on the net with their counterparts from countries as far flung in the globe as Ghana in Africa, Savannah and Decorah in U.S.A, Sunderland in England and Brazil in South America. A voyage of learning at every step The journey is more memorable than the destination but with ISA, weâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve found both to be equally memorable. The class activities for the academic year were planned as per the approved action plan. With a myriad of activities taking place at school, planning, organizing, and implementing gradually started taking shape. Students gathered a wealth of knowledge by listening to guest speakers, interacting with visitors and from the trips out of school. The journey which began with the Dossier as the destination, evolved as a voyage wherein learning happened at each step. A small step; a giant leap We were very inspired to take up the project as we saw this as a great opportunity to bring internationalism into our curriculum. Preparing the action plan was a good exercise that got us all thinking to come up with various ways to connect our classrooms with the world. While working on ISA we saw a lot of seamless learning taking place. Each project was coordinated by selected colleagues and it was their thoughts, ideas and involvement that made the journey enjoyable. It was a great moment for our school to get on the ISA journey and explore learning across the world. Discovering a new way of teaching-learning

Implementing ISA in our school was quite stimulating for us. It took us a while to understand the actual project and work towards it. We held separate meetings with the teachers and students to discuss the projects. We also tried to overcome the lack of infrastructure in school. Although we faced some difficulties, we were enthusiastic about it and wanted to complete it successfully. The students were guided to make charts and do other work related to the projects. After the completion of the projects, the school organised an exhibition of the ISA projects on 26 January. The projects were presented effectively through charts, games, dance and drama. All the visitors and parents appreciated the hard work of the students. It was a jubilant moment for the students! The school also gained by participating in ISA by discovering the hidden talents of the students. Working on the programme was a very different experience altogether.

Creating more enthusiasm for learning ISA was first introduced in our school in 2005-06 and since then our teaching methodology and perception of the subjects has undergone a sea change. With the world fast becoming a global village it has become imperative for us (teachers and students) to think and act as global citizens. The Internet has thrown open a flood of information and this explosion of knowledge has swamped the world. We carefully selected topics which we felt would have an immediate impact and lasting significance for our children. Each of the topics involved a number of activities and the challenge was to fit these into our curriculum within a limited time frame. The enthusiasm of the teachers and students made this seemingly daunting task possible. What was particularly rewarding was the joy with which our young learners participated in them. Surprisingly they come out with newer ideas and their enthusiasm was truly contagious. Parents were equally encouraging in their response to these activities, lending their whole hearted support whenever needed.

An engaging and memorable experience

The plethora of activities as part of ISA has been rewarding for our school. Right from the initial brainstorming by the staff till the implementation of the activities by the students, it has been an enriching experience for our school. The staff thought of some original and ambitious ideas and briefed the students in an interactive session. The students also offered suggestions based on their previous experience in the year 2005 when they had participated in ISA. The sweep of skills that curriculum activities tested was broad. Some students, inspired by Hussain, painted tirelessly while several others devotedly composed poems and enthusiastically enacted skits. The dance performances were also outstanding because the students were energetic. The students were great spectators and listened intently to folk tales and facts from remote corners of the world. To sum up, the entire experience was beneficial for those who participated in it wholeheartedly.

A welcome change in our school The ISA programme was a welcome change in our campus. The programme equipped our students to look further than the prescribed text and beyond the set boundaries in the regular curriculum . The ISA activities were met with equal enthusiasm from all quarters â&#x20AC;&#x201C; teachers, students and parents. The activities chosen had a lot of variety ranging from pet care to international cuisines. Pet Care was a very special project since we were able to interact with our neighbourhood through our anti-rabies vaccination camp. Our parents also actively contributed by helping us in gathering relevant information from different countries. The feedback we received for each activity was overwhelming and satisfying. The programme has helped us immensely in reinforcing our efforts to keep an international outlook while planning activities suitable for our curriculum. An adventurous journey - bumpy but exciting

The ISA journey began with excitement and apprehension. Excitement, as it was a new dimension to explore and, apprehension, as it was our first step towards inclusion of internationalism in curriculum. Formulating the Action Plan based on the guidelines and examples provided by the British Council was easy. Since, we wanted our activities to be spread across the globe, we chose countries like Greenland, Sudan, Antarctica, Mexico, Japan, Russia, Denmark etc. We faced challenges while establishing links. We looked for alternatives by contacting acquaintances, friends, ex-students living abroad and parents who had visited the countries mentioned in the plan. Students are not allowed access to the internet and therefore, contact with links was made by the teachers. Some students collected information through net-chat, under the guidance of their parents. All in all, it was an enjoyable journey on the camelâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s back - extended, bumpy, exciting and adventurous.

A labour of love and collective effort

The international perspective was brought into the curriculum of each class and the students also worked enthusiastically when they learnt that their work would be shared with other schools across the globe or displayed on different websites. ISA gave them an opportunity to use their talents while exploring different cultures and gave them a chance to experience the world without actually travelling. Aideenhills from UK and Ovidu from Romania continue to share their school activities even now! Each teacher has played a significant role in the schoolâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s journey through ISA. Keeping the final destination firmly in mind

With â&#x20AC;&#x153;Glocalisationâ&#x20AC;? (global + local) as our desired end state, we decided to join the ISA. We realised that it would be most ideal if we could head in the direction where our students could be completely at ease in an international environment, growing to be responsible global citizens and indeed, leaders of tomorrow. We took the decision to involve as many students of our school as possible. We observed a large number of international days, spending each such day mulling over its significance in detail. Such knowledge imbibed bit by bit over a year, has resulted in all our students having understood the nuances of several issues which affect people the world over. We also conducted a number of events and seminars in the school, inviting also students and teachers of other schools in the vicinity to attend. One of the activities we conducted and which most excited the minds of our students was an exchange of artifacts between us and our partner schools abroad. Global Gateway helped us initiate the project jointly with six schools across UK, Kenya, Turkey and France. Overall, the journey has been interesting, eventful, fruitful and a rewarding one!

A step towards making students world citizens Through ISA the students not only had an exposure to the cultures of the other countries, but also a better understanding of their own culture. It was a step towards making our students world citizens who can feel comfortable in any part of the world. A majority of our students were involved in this year-round international project. This made them understand and value the similarities between people elsewhere and learn to accept diversity. This experience promoted a better intercultural understanding and through shared learning young people learned to rise above various prejudices and inhibitions. ISA gave wings to students’ talents The success of ISA is the culmination of dedicated hard work of the entire team guided at every step by the Principal. It was a great learning experience for the students as well as the staff wherein we steered our way through the never ending ocean of knowledge and experience. ‘Flat Stanley’ brought in lots of excitement among children. Everyone enjoyed reading letters brought by Stanley from UK and Canada. Flat Stanley stayed with us for about four months visiting Singapore, various homes, attending school, classes and various activities. ELanguages and epals were two sites which provided great help in establishing international links. We established link with some of the students of Cheltenham School in Australia and they became our partners for three projects for different age groups. Performing various activities gave students wings to their talents, a sense of responsibility to meet the deadlines and helped them to realise their true potentials. Developing relationships across the globe was quite exciting and has greatly changed our perspective. We are indeed thankful to the British Council for this wonderful platform to develop children as global citizens and we look forward to more such opportunities.

A poetic tribute to a fantastic experience

It was definitely a bright sunny morning when our school received the invitation to participate in the International School Award. It seemed a very tough but interesting and challenging task. Groups of teachers and students were allotted projects and we all set out to work. The ever smiling, cooperative Mrigank Mukherjee was always forth coming with his guidance throughout the time of this project. After our action plan was approved we needed the support and cooperation of all the trees, the teachers whose shade was important, my young friends, the students, whose unending energy we wanted and of course the strong support of the gardener, our Principal. During the process we shared a lot of information and work with the schools around the globe through Global Gateway website. Watching the young saplings add new bright green leaves (the enthusiastic children) was a unique experience. The objective feedback from parents helped us survive the hot and stormy days. Well the seedling has survived and flourishedâ&#x20AC;Śin the form of successful accreditation!

Belonging to ‘world-class’ The ISA project has been a milestone in the life of teachers and students at our school. The journey, which appeared difficult and unreachable, became an expedition of joy and discovery for us. This project has been an excellent vehicle to enhance and enrich the day to day curriculum taught across a range of subjects by adding an international flavour to it. We devised numerous activities illustrating the importance of Yoga, Music, Fruits, Water, Fabrics and the only slogan that makes humanity survive, ‘Live, Love and Learn’. What was most heartening to observe was the inculcation of values of teamwork and responsibility among students. Adequate research-based work, project oriented learning, exploring creativity and establishing contacts with our partner schools were all delightful experiences. With our partner teachers from Wales we learnt to appreciate and value the differences and similarities amongst us. Our ISA dossier stands as a colourful, comprehensive evidence of our year long ISA journey. This experience has enhanced our confidence in the fact that we too belong to the ‘world class’ and that we are constantly walking towards a new goal of global dimension.

Initially we faced challenges in carrying out the projects as our students are young, in the age group of 3 years to 7 years. Moreover, most of these children belong to the families from slums, the parents are uneducated and there are language related problems. We were able to guide the children by explaining them exactly the kind of work that was required, to use the Internet and to understand various activities by showing them different movies. We organised fashion show wherein the children dressed in traditional costumes of various countries. They even collected national flags and stamps of various countries, national animals, sports, houses etc. of these countries. The students gradually developed more and more interest in all international activities and other projects that involved international dimension. Teachers also put in a lot of efforts to carry out these activities. We organised a small exhibition in the month of February this year, where in the projects done by the students were demonstrated and displayed to the parents. This exhibition was also covered by the local newspaper Lokmat. We want to continue working on this project by including global issues in our curriculum, by helping our students becoming aware of rich and diverse cultures of various countries and develop global links with schools from other countries

Enriching experience for students and teachers ISA was a great learning experience transcending political and geographical boundaries for students and teachers. Under the guidance of our Principal, we organised various activities, workshops, exchange programs and interactions in the course of the year with friends and partner schools of various countries. It was an enriching experience for students as they studied art and culture through various projects taken from their curriculum in partnership with students on a global platform. Bonds of friendship were established that will continue to live long after the activities are done. Within the classroom walls it developed soft skills like better team work, inter-personal relationships, organisational skills and unfolding of latent talents among students leading to an allround growth in personality, the very objective of education. ISA has encouraged the use of upgraded technology in the teaching learning process. What seemed like a Herculean task soon became a joyful journey. It added enthusiasm to all our school activities. This was very satisfying as the students rarely volunteer to share the platform with teachers, and usually do not get the opportunity to display the best of their talents. A journey that has just begun The ISA journey was an expedition of discovery for all of us. When the idea was discussed with the staff, there was a lot of excitement and enthusiasm at the prospect of implementing programmes and taking initiatives with international dimension. We had visitors from the UK, Germany and Korea coming into our institution in connection with the projects. Executing the Action Plan was tough but it was very fulfilling as we watched our students make new discoveries each day. The task of compiling the dossier as evidence of the work done was another unforgettable experience. It was stressful, no doubt, but in the end we found that we had developed an excellent team spirit amongst us. It has been a wonderful experience to be part of ISA and indeed one to cherish and remember. For us here at Lotus Valley the journey towards internationalism has not ended but only just begun: after all, the end of one journey is always the beginning of a new one!

This journey has expanded the vision of both the students and the teachers and has enabled us to appreciate oneness among human race. It has given the students the opportunity to connect with the world and have a new perspective of the world. Activities like ‘comparing life styles of different countries’ raised thought provoking issues and made the students draw parallels and develop a wider outlook. It helped them examine the similarities in thought and actions between dissimilar individuals and cultures. Tracing the similarities between languages was fascinating. The similarities between words and also the way vowels were written in English, Sanskrit and German was just amazing! Activities like ‘Endangered Species’, ‘Native Plants’ and ‘Global Warming’ sensitised students and motivated them to do comprehensive research work into the causes and impact of the environment being threatened. Celebrating harvest festivals of different countries generated awareness about the culture, food, clothes of these countries among one and all. ISA mobilized and motivated teachers to work in teams to achieve the desired results. It has helped in bringing in new ideas and innovativeness in teaching and learning.

An initial spark lit during the ISA Briefing Meeting organised by the British Council re-kindled in the hearts of all when we introduced ISA to the rest of our school. One fine day a youth of Class VI entered my office in a sombrero hat and a poncho to invite me to the Food Fiesta. He spoke in Spanish and entreated that I visit his Mexican food stall. At the fiesta, cash and currency coupons of the various countries eagerly changed hands. The invited international guests were appreciative of the authenticity of the cuisine, the dresses the students wore and the learning that took place. In another part of the School, dices were rolled and pawns were moved on chartered routes to medieval places. Indeed an interesting method of learning trade routes! Parents and guests from Germany looked through the treasure box of products that were traded on the Silk Route. The adventurers would have loved to lay their hands on such detailed travelogues written by the students. Project ‘Heal the World’ truly had a calming effect. We first got our accreditation in 2005-06. Over the three years we worked relentlessly on a number of international projects in keeping with the international ethos of our school. Our previous experience and the support provided by the British Council were invaluable. In the spirit of the familiar saying, “It’s the going, not the getting there, that matters”, is true of Navrachana’s ISA journey.

This vision and the commendable work already undertaken by British Council motivated us to experience and gain from the enriching journey of ISA. Although we had already developed links with schools beyond borders, the activities which were earlier undertaken as a wild wind’s course adopted a planned and marked channelization. A feeling of exhilaration floated around and the school resonated with multiple activities. The framing and implementation of various modules encompassing all spheres of school curriculum right from conceptualising, implementing, collecting and especially documenting is now an integral part of our system. No doubt, there were at times stumbling blocks - a dense haze encompassed ‘what and ‘how’ during the planning phase or restructuring the curriculum, or when response was not satisfactory, but that did not lower our perseverance and persistence level. It was really an enriching and joyful experience. Our students are independent, emphatic, more research oriented, armed with new skill sets at par with global standards and showcase innovative thinking and learning. In fact it has been a life long learning for each stakeholder and member of the school. The impact has been imprinted on our hearts, minds and souls and will last till eternity…

In 2008, we linked with 30 British schools through video conferences and our children enjoyed sharing information about their country, locality, food, festivals, school and home life. The older children discussed topics of global warming, environment, terrorism and even the economic crisis. By the end of that academic year we were ready to add to these experiences and ISA promised all the direction and support needed in order to make our programme more effective. By May 2009, the committed team of International Affairs Coordinator, Teacher Coordinators, Student Monitors and International Club had done a remarkable job in spreading the message of the ISA and a frisson of excitement ran throughout the school. Progress of each project was documented and displayed in the dedicated ISA Gallery for all students to follow and offered the added advantage of informing parents, VIP guests and visitors to our school. An ISA Exhibition was conducted by members of the International Club who guided parents through the Gallery and gave information on each project and the same students also hosted an ISA stall at our Annual Fair and Scholar Ceremony. Long before the assessment results were announced, the team had drawn up another action plan with 26 curriculum based projects for the 2010/11 academic year using the templates and experience gained by working with the British Council!

An opportunity for the world to know us better Fired with the zeal to achieve the coveted goal of ISA, our school team set itself into motion with a year long action plan. We wanted to disseminate as much information as we could about our region, the beautiful North-East India to the rest of the world and for this we chose schools from around the globe, particularly concentrating on the uniqueness of our lands. Projects on Brahmaputra and Amazon were exchanged with a school in Brazil; tales of folklore were shared with schools in the UK. Field work surveys on rainwater harvesting and water planning by our students were shared with schools in Turkey and Brazil giving them an idea that these are common global issues which need to be addressed. Overall, the ethos of the school was strengthened by this meaningful learning which brought about the global perspective. To sum it up, we can say a big THANK YOU to the British Council for opening the doors of international understanding for our young people. Linking with schools and people across the world Establishing links for international activities, compiling and presentation of the dossier in all its completeness were the challenging tasks we faced. We contacted over 100 schools across the world, of which 17 responded positively. Finally, 11 schools responded effectively through an exchange of activities. The Global Gateway website actually opened the gateway for reinforcing internationalism. We had 24 international visitors and we established over 45 international links through personal contacts. We had the unique experience of a videoconference, broadcasting on All India Radio and directing a movie. A few of our activities were put up on websites. Viewed in its entirety, the ISA journey was remarkable because it threw open wide avenues for research and exploration. It also helped to extend the hitherto laid down frontiers of education. It enhanced team spirit, IT and communication skills, and above all, reaffirmed the infallibility of group work. Good projects like this inspire us to undertake more challenging projects in the future.

An year of spring season in Springfield ISA was like spring season, bringing blossoming flowers and colours. ISA gave us a real reason to celebrate internationalism and we feel we have succeeded in helping children to overcome cultural barriers. A slight apprehension from teachers initially, the activities accelerated as they realised that the project activities were really exciting. The parents’ response was highly positive as they had understood that these projects helping the kids to develop a wider perspective. The students were curious and full of enthusiasm, especially when they had to interact with the foreign visitors. The students have hopefully developed tolerance towards different cultures of the world after their interactions with the visitors of different countries. To cite a few exciting moments, the project “FLOWER” opened a wide spectrum about China, celebration of Environment Day at Carter Road brought thrilling moments and kids felt proud when the open audience encouraged and supported them. ISA has certainly been an exciting and unforgettable experience for us.

(Andheri) ISA provided our students an opportunity to broaden their outlook beyond the prescribed curriculum. Even though the journey was hectic, it was an enriching experience which helped them cast aside their inhibitions about interacting with their international counterparts to share information. The students’ deep interest and thirst to acquire about their topics deserves appreciation. Initially we were a little apprehensive about completing all the activities in the allotted time limit, but the teachers planned, monitored and evaluated each activity on a regular basis. With their guidance and encouragement, the students rose to the occasion to accomplish the given tasks. We were fortunate to have the presence of some international visitors during some of the activities, which increased the excitement and interest amongst the students. It gave immense satisfaction to the parents to watch their children gather information about various topics through hands-on experiences. In all, the exciting journey instilled in the students a sense of team work and responsibility and the end result proved that ‘an idea isn’t worth much unless a person has the energy and ability to make it work’.

An experience to cherish forever There has been a tremendous change in the outlook of the teachers towards teaching and learning. Students have been led to explore issues by using PowerPoint presentations, through group discussions, interviews, presentations by guest speakers, preparing models, charts, picture albums. The parents, the local community and NGOs like RAAC, Siruthuli, Rotary Club of Coimbatore Metropolitan and Lionâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Club were also closely involved in our project. We received good coverage from the media â&#x20AC;&#x201C; The Hindu, The Indian Express, Tamil Dailies, local TV channels and Hello FM. In the previous year we had initiated partnerships with UK schools through the Global Gateway website. It was an enriching experience for students who participated in the email discussions with two UK primary schools. The technical assistance provided by our Computer Department has been invaluable. We also thank the local community for their assistance and involvement. We are very grateful to the British Council for giving us the platform to showcase the talents of our students and expertise of our teachers. We are sure that this achievement will enhance our international work and help us integrate internationalism with the curriculum.

A step forward in teaching-learning process While working on the ISA, we were advised to establish links with overseas school so as to embed the global dimension in the curriculum. In the process, we became inseparable souls with our partner schools in UK, Singapore and Germany. The exchange of letters through snail mail project to Flat Stanley, E-languages, and Video Conferencing has certainly reflected the demands and opinions of social cultural issues and motivated the students to discover and reflect their perceptions and assumptions. Coming from a very different cultural background, the activities framed under the ISA action plan provided a ground for appreciating the diversity in the world. This was a great milestone and can be seen as an exchange of ideas, cultural thinking, comprehensive analysis, impartial dialogue of the situation in the social cultural strata. Students have started exchanging vocabulary of French, German and other languages. Our teachers also expressed that they all enjoyed these activities thoroughly. These activities have helped them in bringing out their potential in making the difficult concepts very easy and interesting for the students to understand. Through these activities teachers have developed and implemented innovative ideas. The teaching and learning system has taken us a step forward and has given a wider perspective involving the wider community of pupil and teachers.

Our ISA activity began with the German Exchange Program to Albert Schweitzer Gynasium, Neckersulm in April-May 2009 and ended with the visit to Egypt at the end of the academic session. Cultural exchange with the partner schools in Germany has opened floodgates of learning experiences. Our ISA experience has also contributed to the practice of documenting the events with minute details. The return visit by German students and sharing information with them on historical, geographical and cultural aspects built bridges and the students appreciated the diversity that exists. Observing International Days and celebration of international festivals sensitized the students towards other cultures. Celebrating Korean Week with Korean food and stories, dress and dance helped the students understand and appreciate each other better. Similar pattern was followed for Africa, China and Thailand. Being a school with students from various nationalities, we benefitted by getting to know each other better. Students from other nationalities of our school were more enthusiastic to present and share their culture to everyone. It is important to mention that the support we received from the ISA division at the British Council was prompt, supportive and very encouraging throughout. It was indeed a learning experience â&#x20AC;&#x201C; a spirit of internationalism, appreciation for each other and spirit of tolerance and a host of other values have been ingrained into everyone.

A sweet and sour experience Implementing a programme of this magnitude was indeed a very challenging and stimulating task. Our school is a world in itself. We have students from Korea, China, Thailand, South Africa and Nepal. Through ISA we realised that there may be variety in the languages and customs but we belong to one globe. It was an extremely motivated and dedicated team of teachers whose zeal and unstinted cooperation ensured that participation in the activities was a stimulating and enriching experience for the students. The students loved to do the activities but getting them to write/comment was an arduous task. This was made enjoyable by adding colours, making feedback forms appealing and exciting. During this exercise our students attained a sense of global responsibility and they became more sensitive toward the protection of OUR environment. Through the variety of activities we have instilled in them good ethical, ideological, social and aesthetic values which will enable them to appreciate and admire the diverse cultures of the world. As the project drew to a close it brought along with it a wealth of information and was truly an enlightening experience for one and all.

Knowledge and learning beyond textbooks ISA was probably the best way to influence young minds and leave a positive impact about cultural diversity.
