To have or have not: Should we be “spectators” as popular spectator sports take over the Olympics?
I believe we should. Despite what skeptics say when they defend the spirit and values of the Olympics against “commercial” sports, I will defend the position that big spectator sports, such as football, basketball and tennis, should be a part of the Olympic Games. Although sponsorship and big companies have gotten involved in these sports, I believe the benefits of spectator sports outweigh the consequences of big money being involved. Even enemies can join together to support the same team, forgetting there previous differences. For example, the people in South Africa, the black and white, united to support the Springboks rugby team. Sport won over political differences and fear. Furthermore sports, including big spectator sports, are a good example of physical fitness and mental discipline—in line with the Olympic values. Spectator sports by definition have a large audience which means these Olympic values are being conveyed to more people. Now isn’t that a good thing? Finally, the Olympics is an event where teams from all over the world play each other. Spectators can learn about other countries through these sports and can watch them play at a level they would never have seen otherwise. After all, the Olympic teams play for glory and sportsmanship and not to win a million pounds and a cup! This makes the sport fun, sends a positive message, and makes more people want play. Therefore I think that big spectator sports definitely need to be part of the Olympic Games. Out with skepticism and in with a more optimistic and inclusive vision of our Olympic values!
