Groupings 6 groups ( 6 students in each)

Activity Take students to the community recycling station for handson experience as well as community service.

Assessment/ Differentiation strategies: 1. Divide students into groups for activities. Each group has the same number of students with mixed abilities. (Purpose: Students with low English proficiency can learn from their group mates with high English proficiency during the class discussion.) 2. Assign three tasks of varying degrees of difficulty to each group. Have each group finish the three tasks in 10 minutes. (Purpose: Given that no one can finish all the three tasks in 5 minutes, the group leader is supposed to assign the tasks to his/her group mates in accordance to their abilities. Each group member will have something to work on.) 3. Choose the best work for each task and reward the winning groups with a prize. (Purpose: Even students with low proficiency will be rewarded for their efforts. By bringing pride to their groups, they will feel they have contributed to their groups. It will help boost their selfconfidence as well as their interest in learning.) Suggested follow-up activities / Homework*: Have students keep a green diary and turn it in once a week for teacher’s reviews.
