THE HISTORY OF OLYMPICS AND LONDON OLYMPICS
I have watched Olympic Gamessince I was a little girl. Little that I know about its history until the day my teacher asked me to write an article about London Olympic 2012. In fact, all sports fan should at least learn about the history in order to understand the true spirit of the greatest world sports event.
On 6 July 2005, London was selected as the host city for the Olympic and Paralympic Games in 2012 during the 117th IOCsession in Singapore, which will make it the first city in the world to host the Summer Olympics three times. London has hosted the Summer Olympics twice in 1908 and 1948.
Gamesof the XXX Olympiad are the official name of Summer Olympics 2012. The opening ceremony of the gameswill be The Isles of Wonder and there will be 29 events and approximately 17, 000 athletes participating, representing 205 countries from all over the world.
Around half of a million athletes and spectators will be descending on London and the UK in June 2012 for the Olympics that will be held from 27 July to 12 August 2012. This is the chance for London to show their unique attractions to the world such as Big Ben, The House of Parliament, Tower Bridge, Natural History Museum and the London Eye.
Major sports, including association football, rugby league, rugby union, rowing, boxing, badminton, cricket, tennis, darts and golf, originated or were substantially developed in the United Kingdom and the states that preceded it. In London, the most popular sport is football. They have many football clubs and five of them in the Premier League such as Arsenal, Chelsea,Fulham, QueensPark Rangers and Tottenham Hotspur. This is also the London special character that makes it so famous in the world.
London has made a lot achievement throughout the year. The UK’s shown a great performance at the past Olympics especially at the gamesin Beijing which they became 4th
winning a total of 47 medals. This is one of the factors why London was chosen as the host for the Olympics.
The surrounding East London area saw much of London’s early industrial development. Now, brownfield sites throughout the area are redeveloped as part of the Thames Gateway including the London Riverside and Lower Lea Valley, which is being developed into the Olympic Park for the 2012 Olympics and Paralympics. The 2012 GamesPark near Stratford is attracting new tourists to the area. The upgraded Greenway cycle and walking path provides an ideal viewing point for the park.
The Olympics London’s motto this year is “Inspire a Generation”. This motto is very suitable since London has made a new development there. A new 200 hectare Olympic Park constructed on a former industrial site at a Stratford shown their great effort in welcoming the visitors to the Olympics 2012this summer!
As a sport fan, I wish I could be one of the spectators of Olympic sports event live one day!
