“WE ARE THE WORLD” WE ARE THE CHILDREN OF THE WORLD” –
Technology has taken giant strides in today’s world and the world has shrunk into one large village to be inhabited by children from all countries. The spirit of internationalism has seeped so deeply in our psyche that we no longer regard ourselves as children of one country or one continent. We are all world citizens striving for one cause and one goal. Universal peace is one such initiative, where we all stand united. Surmounting the divisive forces, crushing the ugly heads of the hydra of hatred, children all over the world are taking baby steps to spread their message of peace, universal love and brotherhood.
Games and sports are big levelers; they humanize us – they teach us the virtues of accepting defeat gracefully and victory in all humility. They motivate us to give our best every time and all the time and yet accept that we may not be the best. They enable us to appreciate the limitations and strengths of each individual. New challenges are set, new landmarks are established and new goals are achieved in our unrelenting quest to do ‘better and better’.
While the world’s sporting talent converges at one point during the Olympics, it is our duty to ensure its safety. In ancient Greece the warring city states such as Athens and Sparta agreed to a month’s truce to allow athletes to compete in the Olympic Games. Since then a tradition of invoking the ‘Olympic Truce’ at the time of games is being diligently followed. It not only ensures that all participating nations proclaim truce 7 days before and after the games, but also allows citizens, pilgrims and players to participate in or attend the games in safety.
Heartwarming experiences of watching the 2 Koreas walking under one umbrella or nations of the world answering the clarion call of the UNO to at least stop war for the period of games sends a very strong signal to the world at large that war can be dispensed with and PEACE is possible.
From war let us break loose From the necks of our heroes remove the noose Peace and harmony we induce And in the Olympics proclaim the ‘Truce’.
