The spring pool is lower than normal while the Roaring River Hatchery project continues.

T

he $1.9 million project at the Roaring River Hatchery is ongoing, with major work aiming for completion in May and loose ends being tied up by the end of summer. Paul Spurgeon, manager of the Hatchery, which is managed by the Missouri Department of Conservation, said in late January, the lower structure, a key to the project that will divert water is poured, allowing the Hatchery to recirculate water into its top six holding pools. After the recirculation pump was turned back on, crews turned their

attention to finishing the spring pool by April. “At the spring head, a 24-inch PVC pipe is being installed to the first structure, which then pumps water to the lower structure,” Spurgeon said. “There’s still work to do in the flume with stop logs being installed. They are basically a dam in the flume, which is a box that feeds the pools. One side is built up with dam boards, and we’re replacing those boards with stainless steel. If all goes well, we’ll have quite a bit of the project done by May 1.” Spurgeon said past that point, the

work will focus on pouring the concrete for the parking lot, replacing valves and adding the flood gates at the falls and spring head. “A lot of that stuff has to be custom-built, so it takes two or three months to get it out of the factory,” he said. “The target date for finishing the spring pool is May, and other work will probably go into June, but, all that depends on the weather and if the water comes up or not.” Spurgeon said the Hatchery project will not affect fishing on Opening Day, as all holes near the Hatchery will still be open.

sidestory: historic tree fell over winter Opening Day 2019 When: Friday, March 1

Hatchery manager:

What: 6,000 fish expected to be stocked for 2,000 expected visitors

‘Stream in good shape’

2,000 expected on Opening Day

W

ith Opening Day on a Friday this year, staff at Roaring River State Park are hoping for big numbers, estimating about 2,000 visitors making their way to the park. Paul Spurgeon, manager of the Roaring River Hatchery, which is managed by the Missouri Department of Conservation, said the stream is in good shape this winter. “We didn’t have any big weather events, so the stream is in good shape, and we haven’t had to do any repair work yet,” he said. “Zone 3 is still closed where the stream cut a new channel and the banks are steep, but everywhere else is good.” Spurgeon said MDC and the Department of Natural Resources are still working to determine what should be done in Zone 3 and how to fund it. It is partially open from the back end., as Spurgeon said the daily tag-required area in Zone 3 is inaccessible, but people may go below that to the non-tag-required area, which stocked less often. Story by Kyle Troutman

Stocking for Opening Day will be at a 3:1 ratio, Spurgeon said, meaning about 6,000 fish will make their way into the river for anglers. “In March, April and May, the fish will come from Montauk State Park [due to the ongoing Hatchery project], and we should have some pools open to hold and stock as normal,” Spurgeon said. “We are estimating about 2,000 people, and we do three fish per tag, so about 6,000 fish. We always estimate on the high side, and it depends on the weather, like if it’s sunny and 70s or if we have a foot of snow. We’ll adjust the numbers as we get closer to March 1.” As usual, Spurgeon said 100 lunkers will be let loose, but anglers may also have better lunker luck this year due to the Hatchery project. “We left all the big fish in the spring pool, but with the gates wide open, some of them may have escaped into the river,” he said. “The mortality rate would have been high if we tried to move them, so we just left them there, and they could get

into the river if they wanted.” One big change Spurgeon is hoping won’t stress too many visitors is in regards to a tree — the Osage orange by the first hole — which fell over the winter. “That’s probably one of the most photographed trees in Missouri,” Spurgeon said. “Those trees get heavy as they age, and one of the limbs started coming down. We were looking at what it was doing and trying to figure out what to do, but the tree experts didn’t think there was much that could be done. Then, one day, it uprooted itself. It looked like an explosion. “It’s a historic tree. There was an iron bar in the middle of the trunk, and it’s said people used to tie their horses to it in the 1800s. That’s not verifiable, but that tree has been there forever. We are probably sadder about it here than anyone.” Fishing on March 1 will start at 6:30 a.m., signifying the start of catch-and-keep season, which runs through Oct. 31.

nyone who is a frequent flyer at Roaring River State Park’s Opening Day has likely ran into Steve Allgood in one of the 46 consecutive years he has attended the Barry County spectacle. Traditionally, Allgood and his family and friends set up at 3-3:30 a.m. at the second hole down river from the bridge by the CCC Lodge, cooking up sausages and chatting the morning away until the gun is fired. Now 50 years old, Allgood, of Joplin, said he’s been to Opening Day so many times since the age of 4 that the they tend to overlap in his memories. “I remember as a kid my parents would take us out from Seneca schools halfway through the school day on the day before March 1,” Allgood said. “We’d be in shorts and a T-shirt and make our way in a camper down to the park. One day, we were in shorts and a T-shirt and it was 65 degrees when we left school, then on Opening Day it was 9 degrees below zero and the wind was 20-plus miles per hour blowing through the hollow.

“We used to stay in campers, then we moved up to the old hotel where the lodge is now, then we moved to the cabins above the CCC lodge. One night, about 30 years ago, the falls were not running, so I spent all night up there. For the last about 20 years, we’ve stayed in cabin No. 13. I don’t even have to make the reservation any more. They just put me down for it.” Allgood said the tradition started with him, his mother, his father and his little brother. It expanded to include his uncle and nephews, and these days, about 15 family and friends come to the banks. “I have a camper out in Rock Court, and my parents have one there, too,” he said. “A lot of us stay in the cabin, but we don’t sleep much. Usually we stay up playing cards and visiting. We even have one guy who comes up from Dallas every year, for about the past 15 years. He lived in Neosho, but his job got moved to Dallas, and he still makes the drive up every year.” Through those years, Allgood said he has seen a number of changes at the park. “I’ve seen the hatchery redone three times, the old CCC Lodge turned into the new one, the original hotel being torn down and conference center and inn being built, and the addition of cleaning stations,” he said. “We used to clean the fish right there on the bank. The [Department of Natural Resources] and Department of Conservation have done a phenomenal job over the years updating and making improvements to the park.” Allgood said fishing-wise, his starting spots have moved over the years almost as much as his lodging. “We’ve started at a lot of holes,” he said. “We used to start down below the second low-water bridge, then we moved to the top of the river, and now

Allgood said his group usually fishes with painted jigs, and his father once caught a 9-pound, 12-ounce lunker on a bear hook with sewing thread. we start at the second hole in front of the CCC Lodge. We get there a little after 3 a.m. and set up, and about 50 or 60 people come from both ends of the river to say hi. They know where we are at, so it’s kind of a tradition. “There’s one lady, and I don’t even know her name but I know her face, she starts down river but always makes her way up to see us and make sure we made it through the winter. After the gun, Allgood said his group fishes for a few hours through the morning, until he retires to the cabin to make everyone breakfast, then they return to the banks and fish until about 3:30 or 4 p.m. After that, they clean the fish and head back for dinner — typically a fish fry. Allgood said his group usually fishes with painted jigs, and his father once caught a 9-pound, 12-ounce lunker on a bear hook with sewing thread. “I’ve caught two 5-and-three-quarter-pound lunkers, and I’ve always said if I get a 6-pounder that I’d frame it, Allgood said. “I always wanted to start out with my spoonbill rod, and I did last year. It’s all about just having fun and enjoying the river.

Steve Allgood fishes with his youngest granddaughter, Alexah June Liles.

Allgood said he also takes pride in getting the lowest numbered tag possible. “Tag No. 1 is given out by the park, but I had No. 2 three years in a row, and my granddaughter had the No. 2 youth tag one year. Over the years, I’ve had tags 2-10.” Aside from the tag numbers, tackle and lunkers, Allgood said he keeps coming back for one simple reason — family and the children — and that’s one reason he is actively involved in Kids’ Fishing Day for the past 15-plus years. “For us, it’s all about family,” he said. “I’ve always said deer season is the start of winter for us, and Opening Day is the start of spring. My grandpa used to come with us, and my mom, dad and nephews were raised at the river. We always make sure to get my grandkids and kids down there. “It’s about enjoying nature and getting the kids involved because they are our future. Putting a rod in their hands as opposed to an Xbox controller makes us all better off.”

Rodney Gold, in the orange coat, and his son, Talan Gold, to his left, try to fish in the same spot directly in front of the falls at Roaring River every Opening Day. Talan said he usually catches about 30 fish on March 1, and his personal record is 64 in four hours.

A

nglers at Roaring River State Park who attend Opening Day are usually pretty good at catching fish, but there are probably not many who catch the consistent quantity as 12-year-old Talan Gold. Talan’s father, Rodney Gold, 49, of Jenkins, has been a mainstay on Opening Day since the mid-1980s, and it’s a tradition he is carrying on to the next generation.

“I was on the cabin list for 25 years and finally got one four or five years ago, and I’ll have that until I give it up or die,” Rodney said. “We always fish around the falls every year, and it’s a tradition for us to go down there and talk to the people we’ve become acquainted with over the years. Talan’s first Opening Day was actually before he was born. He is an April baby, so his first was while he was still in his momma’s belly.”

Talan, even at only 12, has made a name for himself on the area of the river near the hatchery. Some might have thought it was a tall tale when they heard about a youth angler catching 50-plus fish by the first bridge, but the story is true, and it is about Talan. “I make a special fish bait of my own using small egg hooks and this foam stuff, and if you don’t glue the foam down, it won’t work very good,” Talan said. “I usually catch about 30 on Opening Day, but my personal record is 64 in four hours. These two older guys were helping me and said they were going to start charging me 25 cents to net my fish. The conservation agent even got onto me because he thought I was keeping all those fish, so he walked over and picked up my stringer. There were only two on it, so he dropped it and left.” Rodney said his son has always been able to reel in high quantities of trout. “I think his biggest fish was in the upper 3-pound range, but when he breaks out his fly rod on March 2, he catches as many as he wants,” Rodney said. “I’ve seen him do really well, as far as fishing. But, we don’t ever keep them. Talan has a couple lunker badges, but nothing really huge. My best was about 6 pounds and 27 inches long.” “He caught the 64 that one day, and those two older men were fishing in that same area, and they were just having fun helping him take the fish off the hook every time.” The key to Talan’s success is highly guarded, but Rodney said his son makes his own baits from pieces and parts of Hobby Lobby materials, aimed at mimicking the fish food sold by the Roaring River Hatchery. “We don’t like to tell anyone too much about his bait,” Rodney said. “When he uses his fly rod, he uses the bait he makes. But otherwise, we use plastic stuff, like orange worm Powerbait.”

Talan said he’s netted a stringer full of fishing tips from his father over the years. “The biggest thing he’s taught me is how to tie a hook on properly,” Talan said. “If you get a big fish on and you don’t have it tied right, you could lose it.” The Golds’ favorite fishing spot is directly in front of the falls, prime territory that must be claimed early and guarded throughout the day. Rodney said the true colors of Opening Day anglers shows in that area. “A few years ago, Gov. Jay Nixon came down, and there were these two older women that would always go out to our spot at about 2-3 in the morning and hold it for the kids,” Rodney said. “They liked watching the kids fish there. But this time, since the governor was there, they didn’t want anyone in that area of the park before 3:30-4 a.m. The ranger came by and tried to run them off, and they told the ranger they’d been in that same spot for so many years and weren’t hurting anything. “She said, ‘I’ll sit here and argue with you until the time you want us to be here.’ They basically ran that ranger off. Those are the stories you remember over the years. We’ve also had a lot of problems in that spot, like when a kid catches one and goes to unhook it and somebody tries to jump into the spot they were standing in.” Rodney said most memories revolve around his son, who he said takes a lot of ribbing but gives it back all the same. “He has gotten wet a time or two, up to his waist, trying to catch crawdads,” Rodney said. “And those two old men when he was catching all those fish, they were having more fun with him than catching fish themselves. They were teasing him, and he was teasing them right back.” Rodney said he’s keeping the Opening Day tradition alive for his son, whom he hopes carries the torch.

Rodney Gold holds up a good size rainbow trout caught at Roaring River State Park.

“Very few kids in his class in Aurora hunt or fish, and I think it’s important,” Rodney said. “We are hoping to get him on the cabin list soon.” Talan said he’s looking forward to getting his name on that list. “I hope to put my name on the waiting list soon, so I don’t have to wait as long as my dad did to get a cabin.” Rodney said he has also noticed changes at the park over the years, which he says are improvements. “I was there before they redid the walkway and the metal tubes,” he said. “the water quality has also gotten a lot better, and they’ve redone the cabins. You used to be able to smell the sewer, and they’ve redone the restrooms and septic systems, and I think that has helped over the years. DNR is doing a good job keeping the quality up.” With many fine years of fishing and likely changes to the park ahead, Talan said one thing may never change — his record. “It would be pretty hard to beat 64 in four hours,” he said.

Regulations by zone

Roaring River State Park is divided into three zones, each with the following bait or lure and creel restrictions.

Zone 1

From the hatchery to the posted sign at the mouth of Dry Hollow Creek, only artificial lures, soft plastic baits and flies are permitted. An artificial lure is defined as a manufactured lure. Soft plastic lures include synthetic eggs, worms or grubs. Flies are lures considered on a single point hook of feathers, tinsel, chenille, yarn, fur, silk, rayon, or nylon thread of floss, with or without spinners. No putty-dough baits, other natural baits or foods may be used in this area.

Zone 2

From the posted sign at the mouth of Dry Hollow Creek to the old dam in the lower end of Campground 3, only flies are permitted. In the area of Zone 2 designated as catch-and-release only (from the posted sign at the mouth of Dry Hollow Creek to the posted sign below the bridge on Highway F) trout may not be possessed and must be retuned to the water unharmed immediately. This portion of Zone 2 is designated as a multiple-use area with wading and swimming allowed.

Zone 3

From the old dam to the park boundary, artificial lures, soft plastic baits, flies and natural or scented baits may be used. Natural and scented baits include live bait or any other substance designed to attract fish by taste or smell including dough, putty or paste-type baits.

RECIPES

How to broil a trout: 25 mins, 2 servings, 470 cals

Broiled Trout Ingredients

1/4 cup butter 2 (8 ounce) whole trout, butterflied and deboned salt and freshly ground black pepper to taste 2 tablespoons freshly squeezed lemon juice 2 tablespoons chopped fresh flat-leaf parsley

Directions 1. Melt butter in a saucepan over medium-low heat until butter smells toasted and is golden brown, about 1 minute. Turn off heat. 2. Line a baking sheet with a piece of aluminum foil. Place trout onto foil; open trout so skin sides are down. Drizzle each trout with about 1/2 teaspoon melted butter. Generously season with salt and black pepper.

Spicy Grilled Trout Ingredients

1 whole trout, cleaned 2 teaspoons lemon juice 1 teaspoon vegetable oil 1 teaspoon ground cumin 1 teaspoon chili powder 1 teaspoon spicy Hungarian paprika 1/4 teaspoon ground black pepper 1 pinch salt cooking spray

Did you know?

3. Move an oven rack to 5 or 6 inches below heat source and preheat oven’s broiler on high heat.

The state record rainbow trout was caught at Roaring River State Park. It weighed 18 pounds and one ounce.

4. Broil trout until opaque and barely firm to touch, 2 or 3 minutes. Remove from oven. 5. Return pan of melted butter over high heat; stir in lemon juice and parsley. Bring butter sauce to a boil; whisk to combine. Serve trout on plates and drizzle with butter sauce.

How to grill a trout:

1 hour 20 mins, 2 servings, 234 cals

Directions 1. Cut several diagonal slashes with a sharp knife in each side of trout. Mix lemon juice, vegetable oil, cumin, chili powder, paprika, black pepper, and salt into a paste in a small bowl; apply to the sides of the fish, spreading it into the slashes. Refrigerate trout for 1 hour. 2. Preheat an outdoor grill for medium-high heat. A grill thermometer should read 400 degrees F (205 degrees C). Spray a piece of aluminum foil large enough to hold the fish with cooking spray and place it onto the grill. 3. Place trout onto the piece of foil and grill, turning one time, until the fish is opaque and the flesh flakes easily, about 5 minutes per side.

er, and more than half a year into his new post, he is making progress at the park. Some early successes for Topham include clearing out invasive plant species, updating Camp Smokey equipment and clearing out portions of the park undergoing glade restoration. “We have removed one acre of invasive species along the park roadways and by the low-water crossing, things like mimosa trees and Japanese honeysuckle,” he said. “Anything that grows faster than the natural floral and fauna is considered an invasive species.

The honeysuckle is similar to the kudzu in Arkansas in that it grows fast and climbs. It will grow around our native trees and squeeze them like a girdle, acting as a constrictor. “The mimosa, or silk tree, is a tree that people like because it is pretty, but it grows very rapidly and has a large seed pod that will disperse and allow the trees to take over.” At Camp Smokey, Topham said key kitchen equipment has been replaced, including one of the old griddle ranges and a 20-quart mixer. “This just ensures that our kitchen at Camp Smokey will continue to serve its purpose with longevity,” he said. In the wooded areas of the park, Topham said there are 22 units, or areas, where Americorp has helped with landscaping and glade restoration. “As those areas were cut, there’s a lot of debris still there, and Americorp came in to help cut and stack the cedar so when we do controlled burns in those areas, it will help the fire more easily consume that debris,” Topham said. Past those accomplishments, Topham said the Barry Electric Cooperative has come to help trim trees and ensure the integrity of power lines traveling through the park, and park staff have also streamlined the donation or memorial bench process, getting it to a turnaround of 12 business days. “Before, it was hit and miss with the benches,” he said. “Now, we’re making sure our guests are the top priority and are well taken care of.” Other ongoing projects under Topham’s tenure include infrastructure improvements, like tree management, erosion control and animal control. “We have a number of beavers that like to come out and reshape the landscape, and we also have a lot of snakes,” Topham said. When it comes to his new job, Topham said it has been largely smooth sailing.

to seeing people come together and celebrate the tradition that this area is rooted in.

“Nothing has been especially challenging, and it’s interesting to see the inner workings of the park and what happens behind the scenes,” he said. “This has beena vacation spot for me for 40 years, and it’s a nice change of pace to see the flip side and how it’s so much more than just camping, fishing and going home.” Thousands of people will descend on the park for Opening Day, Topham’s first as park manager, and his staff has been working to prepare. “I’ve seen opening days before, but this will be my first on the other side of the stream,” he said. “I’m looking forward to seeing people come together and celebrate the tradition that this area is rooted in. I’ve been to four opening days, and the last time I was here was when then-Governor John Ashcroft fired the gun. “It’ll be a treat to be on the other side, with schools all let out and the Chamber coming down. It’s awesome to see everyone get together.” In regards to preparations, Topham said cabins 4-9 have all been repainted, and a lot of tree trimming has been completed. “We are also putting new roofing on the Riverview shelter, old school house and shower house No. 3,” he said. “When the weather starts to cooperate again, we will do some painting at Camp Smokey.”

Looking past Opening Day, Topham said there are numerous events going on throughout the year, and Roaring River has more than a handful of trails for hikers to explore. Zone 3 is also partially open from the back end, as multiple organizations are still working out how to stabilize the bank following a flood that cut a new channel in the river. “We would ask fishermen who want to use that area to wade up from the access points at the back of the zone,” Topham said. Paul Spurgeon, Roaring River Hatchery Manager, said the daily tag-required area in Zone 3 is inaccessible, but people may go below that to the non-tag-required area, which stocked less often. Topham said reservations are being taken for camping, cabins and Camp Smokey, and the park is also looking for volunteers. “We need volunteers to help with trash cleanup and tasks around the park,” he said. “We can always find opportunities for them, as we also manage Viney Creek and Big Sugar State Park.”
