ROARING RIVER PLANNING USUAL YEAR OF EVENTS
T
hough the COVID-19 pandemic is still affecting what you are able to do, Roaring River State Park is planning a usual year of events for 2021, hoping to do as much as possible. Joel Topham, park manager, said more information about what will be allowed will hopefully be decided in coming weeks. “We won’t know until mid- to late-February if the offices will open up more, but our campgrounds are open and concessions should be operating,” he said. “We are still operating under state COVID guidelines, so we have hand sanitizer throughout the park, are cleaning the bathrooms more frequently and have the Story by Kyle Troutman
plexiglass in all our offices.” Topham said the park is hoping to bring back the Movies Under the Stars events this year, in cooperation with the Cassville Branch Library. “We are in talks to do that, and we still have our Veterans Free Fishing Days and our Kids’ Fishing Days scheduled,” he said. “We also have WOW and all our other events at the Nature Center on the calendar. Last year, we had our first 10K hike/run, so we hope to bring that back, too.” Campgrounds are open for reservations, with the check-in boards open and campers able to use a QR Code or text system to check in to their reservation. Hosts will also post tags on campground posts as normal. TROUT TIMES |

Camping fees will go up $1 this year, starting on March 1, with proceeds from the hike supporting the free wifi available throughout the park. During the on-season, basic sites will be $14 per night, electric sites $25 per night, premium electric sites (50 amp) $27 per night, family campsite basic sites $27 per night, electric sites $45 per night, premium electric sites $49 per night and sewer/ electric/water sites $59 per night. Topham said the pandemic has increased park attendance in the last year. In 2019, the park saw 1,365,242 visitors, and in 2020, it had 1,461,576 visitors, an increase of 7 percent. Even Sugar Creek State Park saw an uptick, from 21,900 visitors in 2019 to 29,934 in 2020. “We’ve seen a huge increase across the board,” Topham said. Because of COVID, people are getting outdoors to take care of their mental health.” Topham said staff has also been working on park upgrades in the last year. “We’ve added 13 50-amp electric boxes to campsites, five in Campground 1, two in Campground 2 and two in Campground 3,” he said. “We’ve been desperately trying to get more of those in.” Zone 3 is also expanding this year for anglers, moving down two holes to offer a little more space.

Make the Most of Your Trip to
ROARING RIVER
R
oaring River State Park can serve as a pit stop on a road trip or a multi-week getaway. While most visitors come to fish, not all visitors come prepared to wet a line. These trip ideas will make sure you get the most out of your stay whether you fish or are just hoping to get away.
Trip ideas based on your length of stay 12
| Welcome to Roaring River 2021
The Roaring River Spring Pool and Deer Leap overlook are “a must-see” for all visitors.
30-minute activities If you only have a short time to spend in the park, you better make the most of it. No trip to Roaring River State Park is complete without a visit to the spring and hatchery.
FEED THE FISH AT THE SPRING POOL You will want to bring a cup and a couple of quarters so that you can feed the trout. Feed is dispensed by machines operated by quarters, similar to a gumball machine. The cup makes it easier to hold on to the little brown pellets. Take your time strolling past the raceways of rainbow trout. The kids will be delighted at the splashing of trout in a feeding frenzy.
DEER LEAP TRAIL, 0.2 MILES LONG If you have the time and want to stretch your legs, don’t miss the overlook on Deer Leap Trail. This short trail can be completed in 15 minutes. Keep in mind that Deer Leap Trail does include natural stone steps. The steps may be too much for those with limited mobility
The Ozark Chinquapin Nature Center is located near the entrance of Campground 3 off of Highway F.
2-hour activities In addition to visiting the spring and hatchery, your extra time can be spent taking a stroll along the river or checking out the displays at the Ozark Chinquapin Nature Center.
SPRING HOUSE TRAIL, 0.4 MILES LONG Photo by Kelly Koch | Special to the Trout Times
Photos by Kyle Troutman
The nature center is home to two live snakes! Love them or hate them, these two king snakes have had an important role in helping visitors overcome their fear of snakes. The staff at the Nature Center are available to answer questions about park resources or offer suggestions on hiking trails or other activities.
This trail offers great views of the river and the birds that live along the banks. Start at the Amphitheater or the Nature Center. As you walk along the dolomite bluff, keep your ears open for the rattle of the belted kingfisher as he takes flight. (picture c) If you are quiet, the focused fisherman may not even notice you as you pass by. Keep in mind that this trail is measured one way. Plan for a friend to pick you up at the other end or turn around and retrace your steps to the start of the trail. (optional picture D/D1)
OZARK CHINQUAPIN NATURE CENTER Often over-looked, the Ozark Chinquapin Nature Center is a small museum housed in the historic shower house built by the Civilian Conservation Corps in the 1930s. The Nature Center is a great place to learn about park landscapes, geology, fossils and human history.

RIVER TRAIL, 0.7 MILES LONG
Park at the bottom of the large lot in front of the Emory Melton Inn and Conference Center. Begin by crossing a small footbridge over a wet weather creek, and soon a short up-hill section, you will make a choice to go right or left. Left will keep you moving uphill to make the loop in a clockwise pattern. Right will take you to a flatter part of the trail before leading to a short incline toward a small cave. The Springhouse Cave offers a bit of “free air conditioning.” Kneel down toward the cave opening to feel a cool breeze. You will complete the loop by retracing your steps down the hill toward the wooden footbridge. If you visit the Emory Melton Inn for a hot lunch, this is a great trail to walk off your meal. Interpretive programs at Roaring River State Park include hatchery tours, guided hikes, crafts, games and more. Interpretive programs are a great way to learn more about park resources and develop a deeper understanding of why the park is so important. Check the park information boards to find a schedule of interpretive programs. Visitors are asked to call the nature center before the program at 417-8473742. The number of participants is limited at each program to better allow for social distancing. Participants are encouraged to wear a face covering.

DEVIL’S KITCHEN TRAIL, 1.5 MILES LONG (PICTURE F)
The Devil’s Kitchen is a fun rock scramble yearround, but it is especially beautiful in the fall.
When at the park, ask staff for a copy of the Devil’s Kitchen interpretive trail guide. Begin at the trailhead that is across the river from the CCC Lodge. When you get to the fork at the small rock outcrop, turn right to follow the stops in order. The first stops are the only two caves in the park that are open to the public! Bring a head lamp or use your smart phone to illuminate the small caverns. The last stop is at the trail’s namesake. The Devil’s Kitchen is a geologic feature with cultural history. It is said that Civil War soldiers used this rock feature as a shelter. Any spot used as shelter would likely have evidence that people had cooked over a fire. Historic accounts tell a story of the burnt end of a stick being used to inscribe “the devil has slept here” on the shelter wall. Since then the area is known as the Devil’s Kitchen. Due to erosion and the constant weathering of rock, the shelter room has collapsed. Today, the kitchen appears to be a pile of limestone perfect for rock scrambling. Caves, history and a diverse forest setting make this easy-to-follow trail a Roaring River favorite.
PIBURN CREEK TRAIL, 1 MILE LONG Park at the trailhead located near the pit toilet in campground 1. Hike the 1 mile trail and use the campground road to make a loop back to your vehicle or just explore this beautiful creek. There are a variety of rocks in the creek bed to explore. Make a scavenger hunt for colorful chert, or discover the fossilized remains of ancient sea-life. This creek is typically dry in the summer, but you will want waterproof shoes after rain. | Welcome to Roaring River 2021
There is no longer an Eagle’s Nest, but it provides excellent views in the winter and plenty of shade in the summer. The north aspect of the trail keeps hikers cool. This trail does incorporate a gravel road in order to create a loop. Keep an eye out for signs that will point you in the right direction. This trail has excellent examples of Ozark geology as well as unique ferns that grow well on the moist shady hillside. Be prepared for one of the steepest trail sections in the park. The west segment of the loop travels straight up hill to rejoin the gravel road that will lead you back to the trailhead spur.
Full-day activities Any combination of the activities listed above will keep even the most active family busy. However, one idea you may not think of is a float trip adventure.

FIRE TOWER TRAIL, 3.75 MILES LONG
Fire Tower Trail hikers may see the remnants of a prescribed burn that took place in November 2020. You may be surprised by how quickly the glade bounces back this spring.
This is the best way to experience all the major ecosystems in the park. This trail has three major trailheads and can be hiked in conjunction with Deer Leap Trail by using the white connector. Be prepared for a steep up and a steep down on loose gravel. Most of the trail follows the ridge top and passes under the oak-hickory forest. A small section on the southeast corner of the loop opens up to the grasses and flowers of an Ozark glade. Glades are a rare landscape that the park works to maintain. You may notice the remnants of the prescribed fire from November 2020. The trail crosses Highway F in two places. Visitors can enjoy scenes along Roaring River while hiking a short piece of the trail. The trail ends in Campground 3 and at the Nature Center. These two ends can be connected to make a loop. Walk along the gravel stocking road to avoid the campground traffic and enjoy the river scenery. By the end of this 4 mile loop you will have earned a trip to the park store for one of their awesome ice cream cones.
From left: Alison Harbour, Elise Harbour, Tess Langton, Makenna Langton enjoy floating Roaring River.
Bring your inner tubes if you are ready to get in the cold spring water of Roaring River. This is best done after noon on a very hot day and will reduce your chance of interrupting folks fishing in the catch and release area. Also, waiting until mid-day may make the cold spring water bearable. Swimming, wading and floating are allowed at the beginning of Fishing Zone 2. Start your float below Dry Hollow in the picnic area. Float past the picnic area, under the Highway F Bridge and between Campgrounds 2 and 3. Floaters must exit the river before the handicap fishing pier located across from the Eagle’s Nest Trailhead. There is a gravel bar at the bend of the river where you need to exit. Past this area, is fishing only. Park a vehicle at Eagle’s Nest Trailhead in Campground 2 behind site 95, to shuttle your floaters back to camp.
The Harbor and Langton Families enjoy the leisurely float along Roaring River. TROUT TIMES |

The Missouri State Park Explorer Program is an opportunity to learn more about your favorite parks. If you complete all the requirements you earn a free badge. Sign up by visiting the Nature Center. You will get a card to record the activities you complete. Participants must attend three interpretive programs, complete two interpretive studies and identify 10 natural items. The park hosts enough programs to complete the program in one weekend, but if you need more time, save your card and complete it on your next visit. You can also take your card to other Missouri state parks. Most parks and historic sites in the Missouri State Park system have summer programs or tours that count towards earning your badge. There are no age restrictions and no time limits. So go ahead and sign up! After all your hard work, you will have a sense of accomplishment and a new appreciation for your Missouri State Parks.

PREPARE TO UNPLUG Many people come to Roaring River State Park with the intention of “unplugging” from our busy world. However, our smartphones can be a powerful tool for learning more about the world around us. The following is a list of apps that will help you learn more about plants and animals, discover a new trail, or keep you connected with what is going on at Roaring River State Park. The campgrounds at Roaring River State Park now have free WiFi. You will want to connect to the WiFi in order to download these apps.

iNaturalist If you enjoy hiking and discovering new trails this app is for you. All trails can help you discover trails all over the world. This app includes maps and reviews of hiking trails. Reviews can be helpful since users will make notes of tricky sections, must see views, or their thoughts on difficulty. Keep in mind the app hosts folks of all ability levels. Reviews for a single trail will range from it is “more of a walk” to “extremely difficult.” Read multiple reviews, then use your best judgment for what hike is
best for you. This app should be used to discover trails, not to navigate your hike! Depending on your cell phone provider you may lose service and the live updates on your progress will be lost. This is not google maps for hiking! Always bring a paper map and know how to read it. This app helps you to identify plants and animals while also contributing to scientific data. Users upload pictures and the app will make a suggestion on what is in the photo.
Picturethis This app is best used in conjunction with a field guide to ensure proper ID. The app will get you close to the particular species. For example, plants are often identified to the genus level but not the

species level (genus and species will be in Latin). The app will also offer common names (in English), but keep in mind that there are regional differences in how folks use common names of plants and animals.
Merlin Bird ID App users can browse observations submitted by other accounts. Fellow users have the power to confirm or dispute your ID on a photo. Photos with at least three confirmations from other users are certified “research grade.” This is helpful for scientists tracking the range or abundance of a particular species. Tip: if your phone does not have signal in a park, photos you took on your hike can be uploaded to iNaturalist later, at home! This is another app that will identify your photos. This app is specifically designed to identify plants. Upload a picture of a plant and the
app will make a suggestion. Again, it is best to use this app with a plant ID guide in hand. The app will get you pointed in the right direction. A field guide specific to your region can help narrow the plant to species. If you are wanting to learn the names of common birds, this app is for you. Start by downloading Merlin Bird ID. You will need to download one of the “bird packs” before you begin identifying. If you have plenty of storage on your phone download the North America Pack. If storage is tight, pick a region. “US: Midwest” or “US: Southeast” should both work in the park.
eBird This app will ask users a few questions before suggesting a list of possible birds. This app will use your location and the date to narrow down the results. It is great for beginners since it asks you questions that are key to learning bird species. How big is the bird? What color? What is doing? These foundational questions get you ready to start a life-long hobby of birding. Are you already a birder? eBird give users a platform to record their bird lists. Please use the “Hotspot” Roaring River State Park while observing and recording
birds in the park. This will assure your observations are being included in park data and contribute to the park’s natural resource stewardship program. Data from this app has been used by scientists and has been used to influence legislature aimed at protecting birds around the world! TROUT TIMES |

PARK HOPES TO HAVE NEW GRINDER STATION OPERATING SOON
A
nglers wishing to clean their fish after their catches this season will hopefully be able to do so soon, as Roaring River State Park staff are in the midst of building a new cleaning station in a new location. Joel Topham, Roaring River State Park manager, said the new facility, a grinder station is being built near Zone 3. “We broke ground on Dec. 21, 2020, and we are working on it as fast as we can,” he said. “In December, we ran the electric line to three transformers, and we’re hoping to have the water and sewer done by [early February].” The new grinder being installed, a Barracuda brand, will compost and shred fish remains, and the mulch will be piped through the park’s last lift station and into its lagoon field.
Cleaning Station Construction Ongoing Gerald Houston, of Cassville, cleans off one of his catches at the cleaning station in 2020.

“We don’t have a date for when it will be fully operational, but we are shooting for as fast as possible,” Topham said. “We’re still dealing with some of the pitfalls of the pandemic, like social distancing.” Topham said the project is budgeted at about $65,000, and the park has been working with the Cassville Community Foundation to help offset the cost. “Donations are still being accepted through the end of February,” Topham said. To make a donation, people may go to https://tinyurl.com/yygjrrqg, or mail a check to the Cassville Community Foundation office at 504 Main St., Cassville, MO 65625. The station will be at the south edge of the parking lot at the end of Zone 3, south of Camp Smokey. “The thought behind that was to give more access to parking and a safer avenue for guests to clean fish,” Topham said. “We’ve been clearing brush along Highway F and prepping for that influx of traffic. We are also making the campground entrance one-way to allow people to still get into the campground and back in their campers, but it will be one way going up to the high road instead of two-way traffic through the campgrounds.”

| Welcome to Roaring River 2021
Without social distancing requirements, the new station will allow 12 people to clean fish at the same time, equal to the number available at the old cleaning station. The previous station was in Zone 2 next to the swimming hole. It was torn down in May 2020 due to COVID-19 social distancing protocols being ignored, as well as the boards under the tubs becoming rotted and unsafe. That station cost about $6,000 per month to maintain, including daily cleaning, composting, gas costs for moving remains and other costs. Topham said the new station will cost about half that amount.
The new fish cleaning station at Roaring River State Park will be in Zone 3, offering more parking and better access. (left) Ground was broken in December on the new fish cleaning station at Roaring River State Park.
THE STATION WILL BE AT THE SOUTH EDGE OF ZONE 3

REGULATIONS BY ZONE
Roaring River State Park is divided into three zones, each with the following bait or lure and creel restrictions.
ZONE 1
From the hatchery to the posted sign at the mouth of Dry Hollow Creek, only artificial lures, soft plastic baits and flies are permitted. An artificial lure is defined as a manufactured lure. Soft plastic lures include synthetic eggs, worms or grubs. Flies are lures considered on a single point hook of feathers, tinsel, chenille, yarn, fur, silk, rayon, or nylon thread of floss, with or without spinners. No putty-dough baits, other natural baits or foods may be used in this area.
ZONE 2
From the posted sign at the mouth of Dry Hollow Creek to the old dam in the lower end of Campground 3, only flies are permitted. In the area of Zone 2 designated as catch-and-release only (from the posted sign at the mouth of Dry Hollow Creek to the posted sign below the bridge on Highway F) trout may not be possessed and must be returned to the water unharmed immediately. This portion of Zone 2 is designated as a multiple-use area with wading and swimming allowed.
ZONE 3
From the old dam to the park boundary, artificial lures, soft plastic baits, flies and natural or scented baits may be used. Natural and scented baits include live bait or any other substance designed to attract fish by taste or smell including dough, putty or paste-type baits.

he Nature Center at Roaring River State Park is gearing up for another year, hoping to host in-person events soon but also planning other ways to get people involved. Kelly Koch, interpretive research specialist, said the Center is not allowed to do any in-person events through the end of February. “Everything is super tentative, but there are some things we may be able to do virtually,” she said. “We’re also not sure what will happen at the end of February and if we’ll open up more.” Currently, visitors at the Center are limited to three at a time inside, or a family unit of five. “My advice for events is if people see something they are interested in, give me a call, because things are changing

Jordan Larimore, left, his sister, Kenzie, father, Lee, and mother, Julie, visited Roaring River State Park in 2002, one of the family’s multiple trips per year to the southwest Missouri destination.
Opening Day veteran reconciles loss of father, memories at park
R
oaring River State Park has long been known as a hotspot of memory-making in southwest Missouri, but sometimes, those happy memories can be hard to handle when a loved one in them is lost. That was the case for years for Jordan Larimore, of Joplin, who spent countless hours at the park with his father, Lee, through the years, up until his passing in June 2013. “I don’t know how young I was when he started going to Roaring River,” Larimore said. “The whole time I’ve been alive, and I’ll be turning 30 in April, we would go to the park a couple times a year, and he went to a lot of Story by Kyle Troutman Photos provided courtesy
Opening Days. At one point, he had been going for 10 years in a row. He and his buddies would camp out the night before and do all the Opening Day stuff like being out at the horn and by the barrel fires.” Larimore said he begged his father for several years to join him on the trip, and when he was about 11 or 12, his father finally relented. “He was excited to bring me,” Larimore said. “It was just one of those things where there’s a lot of people and fishing takes a lot of patience. I continued to go with him for about another 10 years, but when I got into college and working full-time, it got a bit more difficult.” TROUT TIMES |

Through those years, Larimore built a bank of memories, everything from where certain photos were taken to where his dad caught a lunker to where his friend fell in the water trying to pull out a catch. “There’s one story in particular that if he were here he would hate me telling it, but I find it hilarious,” Larimore said. “It was one of my first trips on Opening Day, and I didn’t know what I was doing. I had my little Zebco and a rooster tail, and I cast and reeled and if anything bit, that was a plus. Well, one did, and it was probably a 3.5- to 4-pounder, though we’ll never truly know. I about had it to the
bank, and I didn’t have a net of my own so I was relying on my dad to do that part. “He came to scoop it up and tried two or three times. I don’t know if it was how the fish was flopping around or if it was just too big, though that may be just an old fishing tale, but after about his third or fourth try, it spit the hook out and got away. I don’t think I have ever seen such a defeated man, but in my mind, I got that fish to the bank, so I caught it. And, I had fun watching him trying to scoop it up.” Larimore said his father was an avid fly fisherman, but he never caught the fly rod bug.

“He always fly fished, but not so much on Opening Day because of all the people,” he said. “I remember at about 14 or 15 he tried to teach me, but for whatever reason, I decided I wasn’t that into it. Even though I enjoyed fishing, I wasn’t quite as patient as he was and I became notorious for hanging my pole up early. I found other ways to have fun, like throwing snowballs at my dad and grandpa or going on the hiking trails. It was always more about the park experience overall than just fishing.” Larimore said through all the good times, his relationship with the park changed in 2013, as his father died on June 13 of that year. “I stayed away for several years,” he said. “Even though I had so many happy memories of the park, it was still too raw. For him, me, my sister, and to a lesser extent my mother, Roaring River was our place. “When you go there, your cell phone becomes a brick and you have no choice but to communicate with each other.” Larimore said the painful tears have eased in recent years, and now, he is able to go to the park and cope better.

“The past two or three years, I can go to Roaring River, think of my dad and smile instead of tears coming to my eyes,” he said. “They still do sometimes, but it’s better. Some people have a spirit where they can connect with people they’ve lost easily. I guess I don’t have that connection as much in my day-to-day life. But, as soon as I go by Tim’s Fly Shop and down into the valley by the bank, it feels like he’s right there beside me.” A piece of Larimore’s father lives in the park, as he and his family spread some of his father’s ashes there. “We spread them on the land out by Campground 3 in 2018,” Larimore said. “That was one of my first long trips back with my family, and it was really special. Roaring River was dad’s favorite place, and he was always at peace when he was there.” Approaching 30 with a daughter of his own and another child on the way, Larimore said he hopes to follow in his father’s footsteps when it comes to the park.

“He always tried to teach me, and he did it with golf, too, the mechanics of things and what works” Larimore said. “I was impatient at times and have realized since having my own kids that you learn to appreciate what your parents were trying to do a bit more.” Larimore said he knows his challenge ahead, as his daughter is saddled with his same restlessness. “It makes me laugh that I’m impatient, because my daughter is me times 10,” he said. “She loves being at the park, but if you put a rod in her hand, that lasts about 45 seconds before she’s bored. I hope as she and my future child get older, we can fish together more and I can tell them how great their grandpa was — and I can tell them if they are having fun or not.” Larimore said he plans to come to Roaring River on Opening Day or near it, but with his wife being pregnant and his job, plans are not certain. One thing is certain — Larimore is determined to do right by his father and learn how to fly fish, and properly. “I am learning to fly fish and I want to master it this year,” he said. “That’s a nod to my dad for sure. And, I have one of his old vests to wear to further that connection.”
